He is too smart his own good.
teaches 100 level classes like they're 400
once you have read this get out of the course for your own good!
disrespectful

It's hard but as long as you take notes it is ok.
don't take his class... it really sux

Don't ever take this man for 3 hours!!!!!!!!!
This guy is ridiculous! Don't take this class if you know what is good for you!
works with his favorites in the class but leaves everyone else out. it sucks
He puts history in prospective on a personal level instead of just giving dates
Does not grade fairly.
yeah right he makes history come to life, worst professor ever
great course, learned alot
He reads his lecture notes, very annoying
dont listen to 12/19, this man is terrible, please dont take him
easy as hell, dont listen to these other people. u learn a lot
You have to work for an A, but he goes out of his way to make it interesting.
Expects way too much for a 100 level class
appears smart, but forgot it was just a 100 class
expects too much but knows what hes talking about
don't like essays don't take him he knows too much
People who say they liked him are his favorites, be warned-get out now
hard teacher and somewhat arogant. take someone else if possible
taught well, interesting
Easy if you attend class, Very interesting, nice guy, tries to make it enjoyable

Crams an ungodly amount of info into a one hour course. Looks very Dutch.
You can tell he loves teaching, hard prof, but a nice guy.
Knowledge is sexy, so he is hot. Makes you enjoy a history that isn't your own!
Midterm and Exams Are Deathly, Nice guy, failry easy class except tests
knows what hes talking about, brings history to life
... interesting class, but it can get boring listening to him drone on and on.
Exams and Tests Are Ridicoulsly hard..There impossible better like cramming info
Extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Challanging but interesting.
Good Guy, Very Smart, a little demanding and exams are very difficult
Extremely tough grader. Better do your readings. Very helpful.
very demanding, hard grader, lots of info to learn. don't take if you want easy
Pretty Easy class..great guy and professor. Helpful and encouraging.
He's smart, but expects a lot of students. Tough, but fair.
Crouthamel's exams are very demanding and his lectures never end. Good luck

Boring as heck. Worst paper topics possible. SAVE YOURSELF
Good teacher but extremely prejudiced against Christianity. He is unwilling to allow his opinions to be challenged. Hard on papers, but knows his history.
nice guy, knows his stuff, very helpful during office hours. Exams are written and gives questions ot you ahead of time. Does get a little boring though.
He is a very interesting prof.-Good lectures, and makes the material interesting. Tests are all essay.
Not a bad class. It gets really interesting once he gets past the holocaust but by then the semester is over. A lot of interesting books to read but they are all German.
Boring, lots of reading. Very helpful, but he thinks he is the history god.
Poster boy for wrinkled pleated pants and even more wrinkly buttown-down shirts...knows his history but class gets boring, hard to stay awake in 8am class, do readings and take time on essays = decent grade
Crouthamel is one of the BEST and MOST INTELLIGENT and INTERESTING professors at GVSU. Anyone who is not a moron should take him, because he does not deserve stupid people in his class that would think it was boring.
Fantastic instructor, would take any class he is teaching. His specialty is Europe, so expect him to spend some time there.
Very bias, very rude, grades papers based on whether he likes you or not so...make sure your a good student and don't talk unless your called on!
He loves his subject and talks a lot, but he gets a little off track on lectures. For honors students, he expects way too much, and only gives out A's to his favorites.
Good class! Make sure you include a reference to each source in your papers. Otherwise Bad News!
solid prof, very collegent
Great teacher. Hillarious and very intelligent. Makes history interesting if you don't mind a little reading. Would recommend him to anyone.
Good guy. Hard grader. Class very interesting. He is very smart. Again hard grader. Take if you like to write. Work very hard and you'll get a B
Interesting class, good professor. See him during office hours when you have a paper and he will help you a lot. Good guy.
This class is hard. I unknowingly took it my first semester of college and was unprepared for the amount of work Crout expects out of us. Think twice about how much you want to put into this class before taking it with him.
Expects everyone to be experts in history, if you are not a history major you will be at a disadvantage. if you question anything he has graded he will get very defensive and treat you like your ideas are ridiculous. very childish
you will not do well if you disagree with his political views. unless you change your opinions to conform with his, have fun.
class was fun the work was a little much, a lot of reading that was pointless from my perspective. but i enjoyed the class a lot
I honestly don't understand all of the critiques of Crouthamel on here; his lectures are interesting, he uses videos to keep class from bogging down, and his expectations are modest: for 386 only 4 papers from a small stack of books which he didn't even expect students to read all of!
Very good teacher, present all material in a clear manner and tells you exactly what you need to know for the papers. Great teacher, one of the best here. Ask about his son!
He is one of the best profs I've ever had. His lectures are good and he uses handouts, books, videos, and class discussion to keep the class interesting. For papers, visit him in his office with a rough draft and he will tell you exactly how to fix it to get an A. He is also very approachable.
he expects a lot, and there tends to be a whole lot of reading a lot of the days. in my class we only had to write papers. he grades somewhat hard, but if you go in on his office hours and let him give you some input ahead of time, it's usually a great help.
Crouthamel is a great teacher. While he doesn't always follow his lecture outlines exactly he still covers all the material. He is very willing to help his students in any way he can. He does expect a lot of work out of you, but it isn't bad. Overall great prof.
He is a great guy, one of the easier professors for hisotry majors with only 4 papers to wirte and no tests or quizzes, always helpful and will always meet with you during his office hours, take him!!!
Papers were challenging, but he is more than willing to help you! It's hard to take down notes sometimes because he covers so much in class. You must think about the subject - not just memorize dates. I'm not a hst major and I enjoyed the class!
He sometimes went a bit fast but he is obviously very smart. He used lots of videos to keep things interesting. Can be a tough grader on papers, but if you go to his office hours it will really help. A decent guy ingeneral with some very interesting personal stories.
Tough grader and extremely long homework readings. He is willing to help on papers though during office hours and it does help a lot. He expects a lot but I learned a lot.
Very nice guy, his specialty is German hst, and European stuff. Good lectrues. Have to write papers, but they're easy, and he basically gives you the answers. No tests, so that's cool. We didn't have a single quiz either. Good prof.
Good professor, classes were fairly interesting. Supplimental books were quite boring and often hard to read, although they did provide useful information for the essays. Quite clear about what he wanted in essays. Very willing to help outside of class.
Crouthamel was an excellent professor all around- used primary sources, slides, art prints, videos, etc. to enhance the course. Never hesitated to help outside of class- had high expectations from his students- wish I would have contributed more to discussions but it was early in the a.m.!
good guy, in and out of class. Appreciates humor. Very knowledgable about Europe.
very helpful with papers, just go to his office hours.wants to help you learn and do well. 20% of grade is participation so do readings, show up to class, chime in your thoughts as much as you can and you'll do fine. only 4 papers, use the resources he gives. he is very funny, uses movies, smart guy
i always ran into this guy in the bathroom before class and he NEVER WASHED HIS HANDS, how disgusting is that he never washes his hands, he touches our papers with those hands.
Pretty easy class if you just do the readings and take good notes. No tests, all essays and he makes you do a rough draft so its easy to improve. And speak up, 20% is class participation.
Prof. C. works hard to make this a good class. He uses a lot of multimedia to make the subject more interesting. The papers and readings are very fair. Go to his office and he will help you with the papers. Really a nice guy.
The class is based on 4 papers, easy right? Wrong. He expects a completely different style of writing, beware of the thesis statements! It's hard to get a straight answer out of him when asking for help on papers for rewrites. HOWEVER, he is very enthusiastic about his subject :) AND word on the street is that he's better than the other prof
Great at keeping your attention throughout the entire class. Uses pictures and movie clips that pertain to the subject. Grade is 4 papers, and he grades pretty tough. Make sure to stop by his office and have him look over your paper. He's also very funny.
JC loves teaching, saying "Just kidding!", and helping you learn; he is incredibly enthusiastic about his subject. He lectures really fast, but he keeps your attention well. Class is based on four papers: he gives you the topics ahead of time, but they're graded tough - he expects a lot out of you, for sure, but I definitely recommended the guy.
Best prof I have ever had at gv. He is very funny and i was never bored in his classes. I would reccommend him to anyone, anytime. The four papers take a while to write, but if you go to his office hours, you are almost guarunteed an A or a high B.
Crouthamel was an excellent prof. Holocaust was one of the most moving classes I've taken yet. The papers were graded reasonably, and he seemed to ease up towards the end to allow grades to come up. One of my favorite profs I have encountered thus far, knows a sick amount about European history
A great teacher! He has a lot of energy and tries to make the class as fun and as interesting as possible. You have to write 4 papers and the paper topics are tough to tackle-but he is very willing to help you along the way. I would take him again!
Professor Crouthamel is the best prof I've ever had and can't wait to take him next semester in his Modern Germany class. Amazingly intelligent and incredibly funny. I never missed a class even though it was a summer early morning class. That's really saying something about the guy. Shares his knowledge willingly in office hours.
He was pretty clear but his grading was very hard, I would not take this class if I were you find a different prof. that will grade on content of a paper and not other things.
He is very intelligent, and lectures are clear, interesting, and easy to follow. Grade is based on four papers. He grades fairly easily and gives feedback to help improve grades. I highly reccommend him.
good and bad. he gives a good lecture, but he doesn't understand questions. seems antichristian. occasionally comes up with some bs. nice enough, though
He's awesome. Very sensitive of material though. DO NOT crack sarcastic jokes. Easy-ish on papers, but 6-10 pgs, and is willing to meet in O. Hours to tell you exactly how to change papers. Very enthusiastic and passionate, very GOOD class. Lots of video clips, paper final exam, no tests. Lots of reading to do.
I loved this Prof. He is a great teacher, it's a really interesting class. He is willing to help in officer hours and will let you know what you need to do to fix up your papers. grade are based on 4 papers. Take notes and it'll help your papers a lot. Beware he talks fast tho.
He is one of the best teachers I have had so far. If you come to him for help on a paper, he will tell you exactly what you need to do to get the grade you want. He assigns a lot of reading, but he tells you what to pay attention to for your papers. I highly recommend him.
He is one of my favorite professors that I've had at Grand Valley. His lectures are never boring, he always varies them up with movie clips and even Pink Floyd music videos. He is extremely helpful in his office hours, you'll want to make sure to go before every paper. He has a great sense of humor as well, highly recommended.
Simply Awesome. Extremely helpful and very passionate. The class isn't easy but if you put the effort into it, you'll do fine. Great professor, highly suggested!
I loved this class. Class was never boring and he kept it interesting with documentaries, images, stories, etc. There are five essays which are easy if you use the lecture notes and relevant materials. He is extremely helpful and feel free to go to his office hours. He takes an interests in his students and really loves to help. Great professor!
Excellent Prof! One of the best I've ever had. Very knowledgeable, keeps class interesting, and gives feedback on papers and e-mails almost instantly. Take his classes if you have the opportunity.
Very difficult Essay grader, but attending class is well worth it. His lectures are amazing, just make sure you take the time to write a well written paper.
Dr. Crouthamel is best instructor I have ever had at GVSU. His lectures are very articulate and insightful. Be best to keep snuff on your readings. The only assignments were four papers. He nit-picks but he lets you do rough drafts, and gives great feedback. Be sure to be active in discussion; he loves students that were involved.
Dr. Crouthamel is one of the best professors I've ever had. The only assignments are 4 papers but he lets you turn in drafts first and gives you helpful notes. His lectures are engaging and really helpful to the papers, but don't take a class across campus ten minutes after this one. He almost always lectured for a full hour instead of 50 minutes.
Generally cares about his students and wants them to succeed in his classes. He does have three 5 page papers but they are based on class readings. He is willing to help you at any stage of the writting process and will even review drafts of papers for you. He also assigns a 12 page paper but he will help find resources for you to write the paper.
Prof Crouthamel engages students very well. His lectures are interesting and he is quite knowledgeable. That being said if you want an A in this class I dont REC. His topics for papers are extremely difficult and become impossible to write one or two sentence thesis statements on. Do not take unless u are an excellent writer, you will not get an A
Professor Crouthamel is honesly the best history professor I have had so far at GVSU. He knows a ton about history. He is funny too. I would highly recommend him!A note about the class- read everything and you will succeed!
One of the best classes I've ever taken. Professor C is an honest, genuine guy with nothing but respect for his students. He takes a real, honest look at history and makes it so real and engaging for everyone.
Awesome prof. Really cares about the success of his students. Interesting and thought provoking lectures.
An amazing class, I cannot stress that enough. I had him for History of Nazi Germany. I have learned so much, best class I've taken. Lots of writing (It's a SWS, 7 papers, from 2-5pgs) and lots and lots of reading. He's very helpful, and genuinely cares about students. Participation in class discussions is a must. I recommend this class to anyone.
Prof Crouthamel is great professor. No tests in this class, but long papers. Lots of reading that you have to use in the papers, but he is always open during office hours and the only way to get an A on the papers is to visit and get feedback. He keeps lectures interesting. Very hard to not pay attention to him. Extremely smart and caring
So basically, this is the best professor I've had in my four years here. His HST 200-Nazi Germany class and this Holocaust Seminar are PHENOMENAL. He is extremely knowledgeable, passionate, and actively cares about his students. Always willing to help and also encourages students to stop by office hours to talk about anything!
One of the best professors at GVSU. I had him for HST 200 - Nazi Germany and 400 - the Holocaust. He is so knowledgeable and makes the class so interesting. It is a lot of work but if you do the reading and bring drafts to his office you will do well. He genuinely cares about how students do, and is so nice and hilarious. My favorite professor ever
You must attend lectures and must do the readings! He is very passionate about what he teaches and if you let this class change you, it will
Very tough grader, you must attend class to get the material for the midterm and final. There are 2 papers, a midterm and a final. Loves what he teachers if you have an opportunity to take another prof I would!!!
Prof. Crouthamel is clearly passionate about each subject and knew the material extensively. Prof. Crouthamel allows students to engage in extended conversations about the subject and encourages participation. There are very few grades but they are very fair. Overall a great professor even if the subject is not the most appealing to most.
Amazing professor, amazing person. If you want to learn about history, especially more than just the memorization of dates, take Dr. Crouthamel. He encourages students to engage and provide their ideas, and helps process through major historical events and things in a way many people have not had the opportunity to do. Take a class of his!
Excellent professor! Lecture heavy class with tons of readings, but that's about it. You get few grades, 1 midterm, 2 papers, and the final. Most everything is based off his lecture, so if you miss class, you'll fall behind. He's very helpful with office hours and makes his lectures fun. Would definitely take him again.
I can tell he loves history however he did call out people in class who didn't raise their hand and shame them for not doing the reading which I thought was extremely unnecessary. He was very patronizing towards people too if they happened to walk in a few minutes late. He was an okay teacher overall, but wouldn't take his classes again.
He's very smart & knows what he's talking about. few grades, all essays (tough grader, helps you in office hours then marks you down anyway on what he helped with) favors the kids who participate in class, but he can be unnecessarily rude to students who do not participate and he makes passive aggressive comments often. going to class helps papers
He was definitely rude to those who did not come prepared for class or who would show up a couple minutes late, but his expectations of students were always clear. He was very helpful in office hours but cared most about in class participation which isn't always easy (worth 10% of grade). overall he was very smart and made history interesting
Dr. Crouthamel is more knowledgeable about his field than probably any professor at GV, and it shows. His lectures are fascinating, assignments were papers but graded reasonably, will frequently say in lectures "use this in your paper." As stated by others, very rude and calls out students that didn't participate. I was one of them, it sucked.
I LOVE Professor Crouthamel, hes insanely knowledgeable about the course material and is so helpful if you go to his office hours. He helped provide me with materials to read outside of class. Im definitely taking him again.
Great prof! His lectures are entertaining and he uses a variety of ways to keep people engaged, whether it be through videos, class discussions over the reading material (yes you will actually need to read the assignments if you want to get a good participation grade), or humor. Class discussion is important if you want to do well in this class.
He is definitely passionate about history and very knowledgeable. There is no denying that he pushes for class participation from everyone. However, when you raise your hand he tends to call on those who always talk. He is a tough grader when it comes to essays, you have to use every source.
Professor Crouthamel is great . His lectures are usually pretty interesting and he can be pretty funny on occasions. He is very clear on what he expects for students, he told us if we don't participate in class our grade would reflect that. Also for papers he is always available to help, and he tells you exactly what you need to do to get A's.
He is probably the rudest professor I had this semester. I do not recommend him unless you love history and are ready to read a bunch of books about it. He is not very nice or approachable. He gets irritated easily.
Professor Crouthamel is great. Hes very nice and easy to talk to! He also is very clear with his expectations as to what is needed to get an A on papers and exams. Just participate every chance you get and have him read your rough drafts for feedback and youll be fine
I think he goes overboard with the class participation stuff (I participated fairly often and still lost points for it) but overall he wasn't too harsh of a grader. I'd only recommend his courses to history majors though, otherwise you probably won't enjoy it.
Prof. Crouthamel is a great professor. He is very clear on what he expects in the papers and is more than willing to help you get to an "A" paper. His lectures are usually very engaging and you can tell just how knowledgeable he is on the subject. Class participation is vital in this class... if you don't like that, do not take his class.
HST208 is worth taking for any major!Prof Crouthamel is very knowledgeable and encourages group discussion. This class requires participation and well-written papers (5) throughout the semester (no exams). He is always willing to help with papers. He also wants to get to know his students. The topics discussed are interesting and thought-provoking.
I loved Professor Crouthamel! He has inspired me so much, including pushing me outside of class to be better. I really enjoyed his class, he inspired me to change my major to history. There's little homework, mainly reading. Be sure to participate as much as possible, I tried to at least once per class. I would for sure take him again! He's great!
Comes across as arrogant and condescending in class. Will make fun of you if you ask questions or don't know the answer when called upon. Best to be avoided since there are better professors
Professor Crouthamel is an inspiring professor. This class is lecture and group discussion. Participation in these discussions is crucial, but the discussions are in no way difficult. There are 2 papers, 2 exams, and there is minimal homework assigned (short readings from the book for discussions). I have never liked history until this class!
there are 7 papers throughout the semester along with a final research project, he is a tough grader and his lectures are usually tangents and he repeats himself a lot
He is honestly my favorite professor at GV. His lectures and discussions are so interesting and it is amazing how much he knows off the top of his head. Participation is a must but is not hard. You don't need the main textbook but you need the sources one. He lets you know exactly what will be on exams and needed in papers. Definitely take him!
Genuinely a great guy and prof; had him for 3 classes and he is always willing to work with students and is accommodating... super funny and enjoys what he does, but you'd better do your readings and participate in class. Not too hard and he doesn't put students down for their questions/opinions, but will challenge you to do your best
By far an incredible person and intelligent professor! There is a lot of readings, essays, and a large research project in this class. Do the readings and stay on track. The prof is absolutely engaging and so generous to help his students and understand if they can't make class!
Professor Crouthamel is an incredible professor. The way he taught was very eloquent and made me think about how it affects me after class. There are 2 essays/exams, participation is graded, and lectures are required, the textbook is not. He cares about students! When I was mentally unstable, he gave me two extensions. Please take him at gvsu!!!!!!
I hated history so much and was reluctant to take this class but Prof Crouthamel made it great. You definitely need to go to class and participate but you could literally say anything and he will give you points for it. Tells you exactly what to put on the midterm and in the essays. Super nice and will really help you succeed. Highly recommend!
He had amazing lectures and really makes you think about the content in a way not usually taught in history classes!! Loved his class.
This professor was honestly my favorite I had this semester. He was incredibly passionate about the topics and made you want to learn the information. Although he spoke very quickly and moved on quickly during lecture. He is a very tough grader, however, if you go to office hours he is eager to help you understand what you did wrong.
Professor Crouthamel is a great professor, he seems very passionate and knowledgeable about the topics. Class is very lecture heavy, only grades were papers, he tells you exactly what to put in them in his lectures. Great professor except he is very openly atheist which can be bugging at times.
He is a good professor and he makes little jokes during his lectures. The participation points come from you speaking during class whether it's just asking a question or making a comment. There's only two tests too.
He is genuinely my favorite professor. I have never learned as much as I did in this class in any other course I have taken at GV. He is a fantastic instructor with an evident passion for history. If you struggle with papers I highly recommend office hours, he gives great feedback. Be involved in class discussion, it's essential for your grade!!
Prof genuinely cares for his students success. You get out exactly what you put in for this class, and participation in content should put you where you want to be in the class. Recommend going to office hours and being prepared for discussions in class, but prof does a good job with connecting topics and explaining concepts.
Horrible teacher do not take his class the whole class was based off of 4 essays
This class will forever rank in my top 5 favorite courses taken. Professor Crouthamel is a master of his field and his inspiration coupled with his lectures made the course so enlightening. The readings assigned all clearly represented the material. He will give feedback at any time, and clearly states what you need in the papers to succeed.
As a person he's great and is rly passionate about his job as for exams he is not clear about what he wants and deducts points and will explain after the exam is already done why. Also super picky about papers and always just said info was not enough even if your 3 pages more than limit. Overall hard to read but I liked him as a person
Prof Crouthamel is a good professor overall, but my biggest dislike is his grading/criteria. He is a tough grader and you need perfect grammar always. Essay heavy & will give material you have to have in the essay even 2 days before it is due, so be prepared to add it in. Overall, the class material is great and he makes it fun to learn!
Prof Crouthamel is super knowledgeable and he gives a lot of good insight to the material. He grades on participation and attendance, but he was understanding every time that I reached out to him before missing class. Just look at his outlines before class to be prepped for questions and pay attention to lectures, and you'' be fine.
I think I wrote more in this class than in my entire college career. Super nitpicky about every little thing, impossible to get an A, demands so much detail in essays. I put in an insane amount of work, and barely got a B+ when any other prof wouldve given me an A. Take this class if u hate urself and want to drown in work
Crouthamel is a tough grader, but if you do the readings, essays, and research project, and use helpful study tools like Unstuckstudy, you'll learn a ton. Engaging lectures, just be ready to work hard.
I found him abrasive. He had called me the wrong name the entire semester even when I had corrected him. Had to meet to discuss a paper in which he focused on my grammar more than my content. Essentially told me if I don't have perfect grammar now my students will be screwed, and that I should reconsider my profession. Really unprofessional.
Good Prof, clearly knows his material well, you need to be an efficient note taker in his class. CANNOT miss more than 4 lectures. Participation in class is a must.
Prof. Crouthamel is very, very knowledgeable on what he teaches. So much so that if you use information from a source that wasn't used in class, he will know. There is 4 total essays that dictate your entire grade. I had a perfect ACT score and did not get above an 89 on an essay. He grades incredibly strict. He is a chill guy though.
He is a great professor and I loved his lectures. He is so good at making his class interesting and relating it to real life. I took this class for gen ed but he is a very inspirational professor who is very passionate about his material. He is a very tough grader though and has clear expections that he wants to be followed.
Professor Crouthamel clearly knows his subject. I learned a ton, I did not expect a 200 level class to require so much reading and we also had seven papers throughout the semester with a project due at the end. It actually wasn't hard if you just stay on top of everything. I would definitely take a class from him again.
If you're a conservative, you won't enjoy this class
Professor C is the best professor I have ever had in college. His lectures are very informative and makes me want to show up to class. He is a very intelligent individual with an impressive way of explaining things. Something important you MUST do is speak in class (but don't go off topic!) and do all of the readings (it will be worth it).
I took HNR151 with Professor Crouthamel this semester and he is by far my favorite professor that I've learned from. His lectures are so engaging and informative, and talking to him is extremely easy. He gives a LOT of reading, but if you stay on top of it you're gonna do just fine. It was really easy to write long essays for him.
Very interesting course, feels aa bit rushed.
