He is really funny and if you have any questions he is always willing to answer them. He makes classroom time worth it and interesting. for the course load- 5 books, 4-5 essays for the whole semester. the final was the best, we just had to turn in a reflective piece about the semester. take his comp and lit class!
Jason Crum is a nice guy and makes class pretty enjoyable. Some of the novels were better than others and you write 4 essays throughout the semester. He is really helpful and will usually proofread your essays. The class is worth taking.
Great guy...really helpful and has a passion for the subject as well as the books he assigns...definitely take this course you will not be disappointed
Pretty nice teacher and ok class. I wrote all my papers the night before they were due and got an A in the class. He just likes you to be creative and have well structured papers. I'd recommend him.
Very good teacher as long as you get on his good side by participating in class. Course load is not too bad, just one big paper towards the end of the term.
Jason is nice guy who just wants his students to understand and grasp the text. you read about 5-6 books and do a one page response to them. One final paper at the end. YOU GET TO WATCH DOGTOWN AND ZBOYS, which is sick. if you are interested in the history of california and want a chill teacher, take the class.
such a chiller
Crum is a pretty strange dude, but tries really hard to be humorous. He is really in to bizarre readings and loves you to include extremely detailed literary analysis in your essays. Overall a pretty fun and easy class. His final killlllls
Personally I don't like the subject, but Crum makes English bearable. He will explicate (haha...I learned that word in his class) the text in depth so that you can understand it. He gives a few pop quizzes (easy) and makes you write about 5 essays. He is a nice guy, and I recommend him as well.
Dr. Crum is a great professor. He's funny, young & entertaining (especially with his "get to know your campus" segments on Fridays). The class is pretty easy if you don't mind doing the reading. 5 books, 5 essays. Do the reading, go to class & the final will be pretty easy. I definitely recommend taking this class with Dr. Crum!
Great class. Crum makes it easy to come to class and is always in a good mood. The reading isn't bad, 5 books and 5 essays
Crum is awesome! He is young, funny, nice, and frankly kind of a dork. He is an awesome teacher, and is very willing to help. He is a little bit hard of a grader, and can tend to spend a lot of time checking out the girls in the class, but he is a great teacher none the less. Take a class with him if you get the chance
Love the class and love the professor. Crum makes the class fun and interesting, not to mention, he's kinda sexy.
Awesome professor. He is very entertaining during class, especailly during 8am. Go through the reading it's worth it and it you benefit you. 5 books and 5 papers not so bad. Will grade a little harder for each papers as time passes but it's to challenge you. He is very helpful. Talk to him in aromas. he is always there.
funny cool guy. 3 essays, couple in class essays and quizzes. lots of reading assigned but books were good for the most part. seems to pick favorites and grade based off of that though
Easy A! The majority of the grade is essays, so if you are a good writer, your set. The essays aren't hard and you can write about pretty much any topic. If you're not a good writer office hours are soo helpful! Really chill class
Crum is the man. 1-2 page papers after each book, final essay at the end (not too bad). As a teacher, he's great. He really just enjoys spending the whole time talking about themes of the literature, and engaging in group discussion.
cool guy, just pay attention and do all the readings he says. if you do all those and you write half descent you'll get at least a B work harder, and actually meet with him about topics and discuss your ideas with him and you'll get that A.
Really great and insightful professor; funny and entertaining. Very good looking as well, made it hard to concentrate at times:)
He is so cool, very laid back. So far, lovin' this dude.
He's so chill in class, you'll love him.
Crum is a really intelligent guy, but not the greatest teacher. Class is solely discussion based, but if you run out of things to say he gets a little irritated. He grades his midterms fairly, and make sure to go to his office hours before turning in a paper. He loves academic style of writing, so keep that in mind.
Crum is a funny guy and a great professor. He is also a fair grader. take this class, but do not take it if you do not enjoy reading novels because you will read like 7 of them.
Best professor I have had at USD so far.
One of the coolest professors you'll ever meet. Awesome, entertaining, & enriching class, and very funny guy. I learned so much more than I originally thought I would. Workload isn't bad at all, a few essays throughout the semester and an easy final. He's a fair grader as well.
He's not helpful at all. I would go to writing center at least once before essays were due, and I would go to him and he would look over stuff and give you an overall opinion. Then you turn in your paper incorporating that, and he still wouldn't give you an A…. What's the point?
Most amazing English teacher ever! Very easy going and understanding. You will learn a lot but as long as you do the reading you will do fine. Probably the coolest English teacher ever.
Somewhat difficult to get an A, with the papers, but if you participate in class he will like you. He seems to give a preference to English majors. Very funny & cool hipsterish guy but you'll kind of have to work for that A.
Picky grader on essays, but overall cool guy and entertaining course. A lot of reading, but it's manageable.
Quite a bit of reading, and Crum grades papers somewhat harshly. A great teacher and fun class though!
I love Crum! The rumor that he only gives A's to English majors seems to be true though, he gave me a B even though I participated often and did really well on quizzes and tests -_- He definitely gives English majors precedence, whether you realize it or not, he seems to respect them more.
He grades essays kind of hard, I ended up with a B. He's a cool guy though, very funny.
Take him! I usually hate English classes and never read, but he's hillarious and the books he assigns are actually really good. Class discussions are never boring and its often in small groups. Quizes are all quotes, so you definitely have to read. He is a bit tough on papers, but he's willing to go over rough drafts with you before the due date.
Professor Crum made this class so much fun! He's a great teacher and completely understands that a lot of students also have to work, so he doesn't assign ridiculous amounts of work. We had to read 4 books and a handful of short stories and had to write 3 papers with 1 more to go as the final. Great teacher!
Crum is a great professor. He really wants his students to participate in class discussions and overall make it a discussion based course rather than a lecture. The novels he chooses are fantastic, so if you like to read you'll love it. He's funny, a fair grader, and overall a great professor. I'd take him again any day!
Graphic Novels was a really awesome class! The workload wasn't too bad. We were able to create our own superheroes which was fun! The class overall wasn't that hard. Crum is a fair grader. If you at least skim the books, you shouldn't have a problem getting an A.
Dr. Crum is hilarious but sometimes his humor went a little too far. Overall, he was an easy teacher but I never felt comfortable talking to him one-on-one during office hours--but going to his office hours definitely aren't necessary for an A. Take Fantasy Lit with him because that class was so much fun!!!
Crum is one of my favorite professors I have ever had. His class requires you to read a lot but outside of that the only other homework is the two essays. Crum structured his class as a interesting discussion every day, we didn't get lectured at but rather we discussed the novels we were reading. Super nice and funny guy, 100% would take him again.
Great Professor. Very interesting, assigned interesting readings, never felt overwhelmed by work. Enjoyed going to class everyday, and as a first semester freshman, it was exactly what I hoped a college class would be like. Many discussions, allowed for freedom of opinion. 10/10 would reccomend
Great guy. I have all the books for graphic novels if you plan on taking the class . danebaker at san diego.
Graphic Novel was an amazing class - Dr Crum is one of my favorite profs at USD! He's nice and funny and accessible. Our classes were literally jokes but I learned a lot. Would def take him again cause he's hot too.
Dr. Crum was seriously legit. Took him for an intersession course on dystopian lit. It was the first english class I've ever liked and I'm on the 10 year program for my bachelors degree. Class is always a large discussion, then breakout sessions or random writing classes. Attendance was mandatory for interession but not sure about normal semesters
I took his LGBTQ lit class, offered specifically to transfer students. I really enjoyed the class. Readings (be sure to read) are engaging and then depending on the length of the read we spend a few days discussing it. We have some quizzes, very easy and then some short take home writings and two major essays. We also watched two films.
Nice guy, expect a lot of reading.
I will miss this class. It wasn't overall a class I had to take, but more like nice evenings when you discuss great books with smart people. If you read your homework you will be fine. He doesn't grade harshly, forgive mistakes and if you attend the class-that's pretty much all what you have to do. Great literature choices.
Excellent Teacher. One of those classes you enjoy going to. A lot of reading and some essays you got to do. Honestly Ive never been a reader or writer but when the content is interesting its much easier to write essays. Take this Teacher.
Prepare yourself for over 2,000 pages of dystopian novels. BAHAHAHA free food is a plus.
Dr. Crum is a good professor, especially if it's a lower level class. Make sure to do the reading and participate once or twice a class (ish). And if you're worried about your essay, just go to his office hours and he'll help you out. He gets moody sometimes so don't frustrate him. He also takes a while to get essays back.
Dr. Crum is a great professor! Reading and writing has never been particularly enjoyable for me but he makes it simple and is very understanding. Takes a while to get papers back and you won't know your grade until the end of the semester. If you read and turn things in, it is almost guaranteed that you will get an A. He is very funny and caring!!
Wonderful teacher. Very knowledgeable and open-minded. It's an English class so you'll have a lot of reading and writing to do, but he is very clear about what he's looking for. Just be respectful and pay attention in class; he will single you out if you don't. Overall, he cares a lot about the well-being of his students. Would recommend.
Overall a good professor. He assigns a lot of reading. There's 3 main essays and some pop quizzes, but he gives good lectures to make sure you understand the concepts. The class is sort of challenging but I think he definitely helps improves your reading and writing abilities by the end of the semester if you put effort in.
Crum is a different breed. He drinks 7 iced coffees before you even wake up. He is a nice guy and genuinely cares about you. He will make an effort to know everyone's names and will probably even remember where you are from. You have to write essays and the prompts aren't that easy but he won't grade you that hard.
Crum is hands down one my fave profs throughout my stay in USD. He is so funny yet so inspirational. The readings & movies he provides open my eyes to a reality that I have not taken the time to think about. Do the readings but most importantly listen to his lec, the answers to his tests are all said in class!
If you need a First-Year Writing teacher, TAKE HIM!!!! You will thank me later. He's one of the funniest professors I have ever encountered. I hate English and always have, and I thoroughly enjoyed showing up to this class even though it was at 9:00 am! You mostly read and then discuss the readings in class in a big circle. No wrong answers though!
Dr. Crum is AMAZING. He is so kind and loves gender studies. He gave us really interesting material to cover and I loved the books we read. He is also not too hard of a grader. Come to class so you know what the material is about and you will do well! He is also super accessible for office hours.
A great teacher. Really cares about his students. A fair grader. Crum is very smart, and you'll learn a lot. You will be assigned a lot of reading in this class, though. But the novels are interesting. Take him if you can.
Prof. Crum is the man!!! His class had the best readings and the essays were always interesting to write. On top of this, he is probably the coolest professor ever and he always knew how to make the class laugh. If I had to take another english class, I would take it with him if possible.
Great prof such an amazing guy, don't really need to go to class to do the critical reflections which is the only HW assigned for the class. Summaries of the readings can be found so you don't have to read 40 pages for HW. Would recommend
This teacher is great. It's a lot of writing, but Prof Crum makes the lectures fun and enjoyable.
Get ready to work!! Such a disorganized class and 2-page hw assignments every week. If your taking this for a credit, there are easier classes out there. Great guy but the class is hard
Hard class!!
FYW 150 very funny and engaging in lectures and very sarcastic. Might call on you in class but it super understanding if you haven't finished the reading. I don't like reading but he makes it enjoyable in discussions. Average reading for a first year english class. Easy grader on papers and quizzes.
I overall liked Crum a lot, he is a pretty easy grader which is nice for an entry level English class. As long as you read and do the homework you are pretty much guaranteed a good grade. Sometimes he can we a little weird, but he is really funny and his class is enjoyable. He also cancels class a lot which is always nice. I defiantly recommend.
Professor Crum is so funny. I love his lectures and I always looked forwards to his class. He is caring and always wants to make sure everything is okay. He does not grade hard at all. Best FYW teacher I have heard of and recommended him to all my friends.
While Jason is a heavy lecturer he is really good and so modern in his way of teaching style. He's understanding, flexible, and offers some of the text via pdf. He's really easy going even if you turn in a late paper you can still get full credit. Definitely a fun class.
Professor Crum class was by far one of my favorite experiences in my first semester. He was very entertaining and always tried to have open dialogue within the class. The lectures managed to be interesting and diverse while also giving leeway during stressful times. He's understanding, and very entertaining while still being being efficient.
Prof Crum is so funny and makes class super fun. I was nervous to take an english class because they can be a little heavy but class is super fun. The only thing is there is a LOT of reading in between classes but if you take Graphic Novels its pretty straight forward. Definitely take him if you can!
He was a very enthusiastic teacher and had a lot of emotions that he showed in the class. Lots of reading but understandable due to the class and a fair amount of writing. The only thing is that some days he would go off randomly on kids or storm out of the classroom, then the next class he would be super happy and enthusiastic. Very caring teacher
Professor Crum is hilarious! Very caring and very very understanding. You do have to read a lot, but its a very good selection. He gives days off to study or read at home, and is NOT a tough grader. You will enjoy his classes.
I loved being in Professor Crum's FYW class! He kept it fun with his humor which I appreciated. There's definitely a bit of reading, but they're all pretty interesting. Class discussions are relaxed and he doesn't grade harshly on assignments. If you have the option to take his class, DO IT! (It's much better than the other FYW classes)
Loved going to his classes. Be ready to read as he provides in class quizzes and several reading reflections. His feedback makes you a better writer but most importantly, you leave this class more articulate and better able to formulate your own thoughts. You learn something in his class you won't ever be able to learn somewhere else.
Dr. Crum is a wonderful professor and I genuinely enjoyed his class. He does a wonderful job of incorporating interesting and relevant readings in class and for homework. While attendance is mandatory, it never felt like a chore to attend his class and he is incredibly respectful of his student's time.
Professor Crum was very kind and I loved our discussions about the readings. A lot of reading but that's expected with this class. helped us learn how to write outside the standard essay outline, and helped us read the important details about the academic articles we had to read.
Professor Crum is hands down one of the best professors I ever had! I was quite surprised by how positive his comments were during classes on opinions and even on turned in papers. 5 quizzes, 3 critical reflections and 2 big essays. Even though there's a lot of reading it's usually very interesting! He's Hilarious! Take him if u have a chance.
He's awesome! Just go to class, take notes, annotate, read the readings, and everything is very straightforward. Gives great feedback, and he is an invested professor!
He is such a good professor, he really cares about his students and wants students to actually get soething out of his class, much more that just writting. His classes are fun and he is a great person. Some quizes might be hard but other than that 10/10.
very good
Honestly one of the best professors ever. He's such a great guy that really cares about his students. Do the reading and show up to class, and you're set. I would take class taught by Crum a million times over! Choose him!
This dude is the bee's knees; if every professor was of this man's caliber, these unethical tuition rates might be acceptable. You're in college; you'll read; get over it. Any review of this man by a crying, entitled student about too much reading has never experienced adversity and needs to grow up. Manage your time and grow up.
Crum makes lectures really interesting and engaging. Make sure to do the required readings because there are discussions and quizzes based off of them. He grades pretty fairly and gives good feedback to help you improve on future assignments. Only negative if you're shy or quiet is that he unexpectedly calls on people for group discussions.
Assigned some odd material, but he's an odd dude. discussion based with some lectures. No structured notes.
He cool.
Pretty straightforward FYW class. All my friends had to write papers on oil pipelines and homelessness. He just uses lots of novels and short stories and wants you to write reflectively. Pretty simple.
Crum is one of my fav professors I took this semester. I've heard some people say he's mean and doesn't care about his students but I had a completely different outlook on him, he was so caring and nice and literally bought our class donuts like three times just because. He grades based on three essays and a few quizzes and is overall rly chill.
Crum is such an amazing professor. I have taken him the past two semesters and he is the reason English is now my decided major. He cares so deeply for his students and is so flexible with everyone. He always keeps his classes fun. It is clear that he genuinely cares about what's going on in his students' lives- it makes his class so personable.
I absolutely LOVED Professor Crum! He was my fantasy lit professor, and tho I am not an inclined reader, The Hobbit & Dune (among other great books), were broken down into sections of what to read per class (3x a week) at a MANAGEABLE pace. He is very flexible among students, VERY FUNNY, and you can tell how passionate he is in class discussions!
Nice guy who cares about his students. Only do in class writings so that was chill.
Lots of reading but it's a lit class so that's expected. Pretty easy and chill class overall though. You should take him.
Crum is so passionate about his field and a great teacher. As long as you actually read the novels he assigns you will do fine on the quizzes and tests. Be ready to read every night if you don't want to read, don't take the class. If you read the material, you will get an A, easy as that and if you don't you will fail. super kind and really funny.
Crum is a good dude and really does care about literature and the books we read, but his class is an absolute snooze fest. He just talks and talks and talks about the readings that clearly nobody read/cares about. The only homework is to have read about 50-80 pages of the book by next class, so make sure to stay caught up with the reading.
This was such a chill and easy class, that I usually looked forward to each week. Professor Crum is funny and understanding, and I don't think you'd ever regret taking his class. The amount of reading expected from you each week was totally manageable and the books we read were actually quite interesting. I recommend taking his class!
Cares a lot but grades hard. Overall great genuine guy.
You read a lot but he's a great professor. Relatively easy grader if you go to class and participate.
Jason Crum was an excellent professor although he had a little sass. Stay on his good side, and youll get a good grade. Such a funny guy with interesting life stories. Be prepared to read a lot, ad you can't bs your way through the class.
My lord is this guy ever gonna put our final grades in
Gives interesting lectures that are engaging. Prioritizes student voices to dissect material and prepares you well for in-class writings if you pay attention.
The class is socratic, with students in a circle discussing readings. He claims there are no wrong answers but can be passive-aggressive, sometimes dismissing interpretations. The reading load is heavy, and summaries won't be enough. However, he grades fairly and values effort.
it's like a basic writing class reading mostly stories and essays, one or two novels. Some are great, some not so much. I was struggling and he basically spent 2 hours in office at the end of one day reviewing things for me and re-reading my essay to polish it. A lot more caring than most other professors I've had at this school.
Fun class without having to do tiring work. A lot of reading, but you read fun fiction books like dune. You are tested on it but don't worry, he is a very nice grader. In quizzes you only have to demonstrate you read the books by giving context to passages. The essays are kind of subjective, but as long as you bring quotes from the book it's fine.
There are lots of readings in this class (many short stories and one book). I felt that the readings were interesting. Professor Crum is very knowledgable and passionate about this course. It's an introductory type class so it was bleh for me. He's kind of strict and he cares about attendance.
He is a great professor overall and provides good feedback in office hours because he wants you to pass. There is SO much reading and all our quizzes were just analysis about the readings which he can be very picky and not clear about when he gives feedback. He can get frustrated if no one participates to be ready to participate and give ideas.
Super chill professor. Books that we read are very interesting and stay on top of reading and participate in class and it wont be hard to get an A. Basically have to be mentally brain dead to not do well.
great guy! super nice but did have a bit of an attitude sometimes in the morning. he was flexible with me when i wasn't available to take a test the day of, and very helpful! I wish he had explained more on why I got points taken off in tests.
This is the words professor at USD don't listen to other reviews this guy suck so much avoid him at all costs. seriously the worst professor ever he lies and does not care about you as a student. Dont take any of his classes.
worst as professor spare yourself and don't take this dum* *ss professor.
He's a great professor. He is very understanding as well and it isn't very difficult to get an A. I would fully recommend this class.
