He is an excellent teacher who is very enthusiastic about subject matter. He is very encouraging. I can tell he enjoys teaching it. Jason Downing is very caring toward his students.
Only use book to study or read ahead. No homework or reading assignments. 4 exams and 1 five page easy paper.
He was generally a good professor, but he is very opinionated. He is not helpful via email when students ask him for help.
Jason is so enthusiastic about the material in the class that it will make you look forward to going. His tests are written by his TA's so they are kind of a hit or miss but if you study and show up to class you should be fine. If present for 90% of clicker questions you get 5% added to your grade and so forth.. Overall I suggest taking his class!
Do not take his class online.
Great teacher, very enthusiastic about teaching the Global Environmental Issues class I had. Easy going and understanding.
Great teacher! Went from an F to an A- in 3 days!
Do NOT take this class online. He does not participate AT ALL. No teaching from him...none. No organization. Confusing assignment structure. He doesn't communicate. Worst online class experience I've had.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Worst professor I have had at CSU. He provides zero objective feedback. The citation requirements change with every assignment. He makes online learning difficult, do not take this class. His grading criteria is subjective and constantly changes. Do yourself a favor, chose a different professor.
he's a great teacher, you can tell he genuinely cares about teaching us about the world and not just the required material. had this class at 9:30 in the morning and didn't even mind going
Pretty easy class, some lectures are fun but a lot of the content we had to learn on out own. Tests tend to have content that we have no learned about. He will NOT round grades (had an 89.7 and he didn't round up)
He posts the power-points online after each chapter lecture. However, if you do not go to class, you miss a lot of essential information that he talks about. The exams are pretty rough unless you take time to study and really understand the content. Overall, good class and good professor.
GO TO CLASS. It affects your grade. He is pretty funny though and i enjoy the class. He asks for a lot of class participation but all you have to do is click a multiple choice answer online
Great guy, very funny & always there if you have any questions or concerns. While it's definitely more on the mandatory side to go to class, he keeps his class interesting. I laughed a lot & really enjoyed the class & participation of other students. Four tests (the final was week before finals weeks), Tophat points, and a page essay almost weekly.
I loved Jason's class. He is hilarious and a total hippie but one of the best teachers I have ever had. I learned so much. He is accepting of everyone's points-of-views and loves when you talk in class. Top hat points really add up so don't miss those! He is passionate about teaching sociology but more passionate about us becoming good people.
Jason Downing, though he be a total hippie, is an amazing and enjoyable professor. He is passionate about sociology and his lectures are hilarious. His class is incredibly easy. Show up to class for the TopHat (like iclicker) points and do the reading for the content assignments and you will get an A.
Jason is overall a good guy. Very liberal, just be tolerant if that's not the way you lean, what do you expect its sociology. I liked him a lot, at times he goofed off in class to keep it interesting, which was good. He cares a lot about the students. Minimal homework with one 10-15 page paper at the end which is not as bad as it sounds.
Professor Downing was great! I recommend getting the book and taking note for the lectures. He gives GREAT extra credit if you attend class and donate to a canned food drive. Would take one of his classes again!
Jason was such a great professor. I had the opportunity to have Jason for an online class, Comparative Majority - Minority Relations during the Summer session. He was always encouraging, helpful and organized on the online platform. I really learned quite a bit from the questions and assignments that he had us complete.
This guy, even though i was in a lecture hall with about 200 other students, he made me feel like i was important to him. Like my presence and my effort mattered to him a lot. Such a great guy. Really good at keeping everything interesting and keeping us all involved. I learned a lot from him and wish i could take his class again. LOVE YOU JASON
Do not take his online class. Not once have I had trouble with online courses until this guy. So unclear about EXACTLY what he wants from you as a student. Also, quite rude and patronizing in feedback. I should have reviewed this site before signing up for his class.
great professor. he knows what he's talking about and has a great personality. if you go to class it is pretty easy. posts slides so you're able to miss a class.
This beautiful man has made me rethink every move I take toward our environment. The way he looks and teaches makes me think that he could possible be Jesus. He he created his own religion, I would convert, no questions asked. He cares more about you, than you care about you. As hard as that is to believe, if you take his class, you will understand
Professor Downing was poor at communication, taking weeks to respond or not responding at all and rarely posted announcements or updates. He cares about his students and wants them to succeed, but I found the course to be very unorganized. There was no syllabus and assignments were sometimes a surprise. The exam instructions were also deceiving.
Jason is by far one of my favorite professors at CSU. This class was great because it wasn't all about the information, made comparisons to everyday life. Very interesting, I learned a lot from him. Class is always a good time. The essay assignments are easy as long as you show effort. Make sure to attend class to collect valuable tophat points.
Took SOC 100 with Jason, we were assigned a 10 page, single spaced, 11 pt font paper on food ingredients for a 100 level class. Uses "tophat" participation app, figured out that it works from anywhere and you can skip class and still get participation. Tests are hard and his powerpoints are confusing. He thinks he's funny but not worth it, trust me
hilarious and just a good guy all around
Jason is my favorite professor Ive had. He is very passionate about what he teaches and is a very effective teacher. He is a great guy overall that will make you care about what youre learning. He also understands that exams arent the end all be all when it comes to education. Great professor!
Great professor, funny and really cares about his material. Gives tons of extra credit opportunity and minimal assignments. Tests can be hard, but as long as you use the book you'll be fine.
I absolutely loved this professor. Jason is a very interesting guy and you can tell he has a great personality. The lecture material was not difficult to comprehend but I would highly advise attending his lectures and read the chapters. He will work with you on grades and will take most late work You will not regret taking this class.
This is the most laid back humanities classes I have ever taken. Lectures are interesting and relevant to everyone and the tests are so easy all you need is common sense to get an A. Lots of extra credit at the end which involves a food donation, so if you take this class you will also be helping your community.
Jason was probably my favorite teacher this semester. He is really funny and makes the class interesting. There are content assignments for assignments that are single-spaced, 11 pt font. You do use the textbook. The tests are hard, but just study and should be fine. Attendance is mandatory for clicker points. Overall satisfied with this class.
Jason is funny and very laid back but he has way to many papers then necessary and his TAs are oddly strict with them. He is an easy grader with his exams (curves them) and gives tons of extra credit. If you want to do well, make sure you read the text books because his lectures are not helpful or useful.
Jason is the dude. Such a kind and down to earth professor. He is so funny and always makes a 9 am class enjoyable. Plays good music before class starts. Study for the test and read the textbook and you will do good. Gives lots of extra credit. and again he is just awesome. TAKE HIS CLASS. Best soc 100 teacher out there
Jason is WOKE. Seriously my favorite professor ever. His lectures are interesting, he has great taste in music, and his class is pretty easy. His exams are really easy as long as you read the textbook. Dude really has me considering adding a sociology minor. if you don't have him as a professor you're missing out!
SOC100 with Jason was an easy A, but more than that he really is a great professor. He connects all of his lectures to applicable situations to really put them in perspective. Going to class and participating in the end of the semester food drive will boost your grade almost a whole letter grade, so I definitely recommend both.
Class felt more like listening to his political opinions than actually learning about sociology. I understand that we can't expect people to be totally nonpartisan but come on... Also seemed like you would get a 100% on everything just for trying. Would not recommend if you actually want to learn something that you couldn't hear from MSNBC.
Love Him and I love his class! I would totally take his class again in a heart beat! His lectures are fun and his assignments doable.
hes absolutely hilarious. I took his soc 220 class and it was easy and entertaining. attendance is based from an app so you can get participation from home whenever you skip.
There's good and there's bad. The good is the workload isn't bad, extra credit for participation and a food drive, and he's a chill guy sometimes. But, his lack of clear grading criteria drove me nuts. No rubrics, assignments are very vague, and minimal feedback. Overall, do the EC and work a little, you'll get an A or B. Just might be frustrating.
Jason was awesome! Lectures were entertaining and he clearly cares about the material. Reading the textbook is important and pay special attention to vocab. While participation is not required you can get extra credit from TopHat and you should watch the films he shows as he'll test on them. The final paper is very important but relatively easy.
Jason is a great professor! I took this class online and it has been one of the best! If you read the textbook and do your assignments, the exam is straight forward. He has a clear way of grading and is not a tough one at all. He is very understandable and gives quick feedback. Definitely recommend.
Jason is hands down the best professor I've ever had. He really cares about his students and makes sure everyone feels welcomed and respected. Attendance is optional, however showing up will improve your grade, he's very reasonable and makes sure it's possible for everyone to get an A if they try. His lectures are very interesting and engaging.
Other than the food matter's paper, Jason's class has been my favorite this semester. He is super funny and make sure to get TopHat, it's so funny. His class is super interesting! His tests have some really straightforward answers and some that are more unclear. I was in a different SOC100 class and had to drop it and I'm so glad!
I LOVE JASON. I want to minor in soc now because of him. He is awesome!! Easy class you learn so much from him. He offers a lot of extra credit. 4 tests but no cumulative final. Final is during dead week! Watch about 5 movies. Hes great definitely recommend. Im taking his Soc220 class now too
Such a cool guy. Loves what he teaches, talks about relevant issues. lecture heavy and textbook is key to exams. participation points are optional but not necessary. Everything is very clear. A lot of exams, but they are spaced out well. Best professor I've ever had
I have taken some classes with poor professors before, but none have ever given me the motivation to write a review about them before. 95% of lectures were Jason Downing's time to use his platform as a means of pushing his political agenda and virtue signal, while the other 5% was used to teach course material. Genuinely abysmal professor.
This class requires you to put in an effort but is also super easy to pass if you put in the effort. Jason makes a huge 100 level class entertaining and engaging, which is not easy. He also truly cares to make his students aware of current social issues while making it clear that all political views are okay. He's really funny and is worth taking.
Jason is super cool! I had a lot of fun in his class and learned a lot. We discussed a lot of really important and controversial issues, but he makes sure you're in a safe, open-minded environment. He assigns few assignments and it's pretty easy to get an A. Just make sure you start the food matters paper asap!
Jason is awesome!! Handles talking about controversial issues really well. His lectures were so fun and made 8ams more bearable. Participation comes from TopHat, which is all extra credit rather than required, so a good sentiment but it does cost money!! Assignments can be long but if you work ahead of time and organize yourself you're golden!
Assignments are easy but he is not-organized and affects his student's if they are not diligent in double checking due dates. Poor grader, takes too long to grade assignments. No lectures, doesn't really teach mostly wants you to read. Make sure you know APA citation format or else you will fail.
I really liked him. I took General Sociology online and he helped me thoroughly understand everything we were doing - he is also just a really cool person in general!!
The directions for his writing assignments are usually unclear, and are written in such a way as to make his class seem more difficult/serious than it actually is. I emailed him about a contradiction in the directions for an assignment, but his reply only made things more confusing. Subsequently, I ended up writing much more than was necessary.
I love Jason he is such a great guy but SOC220 was more difficult than I expected it to be and it didn't need to be. He expects you to read every inch of the book and remeber a lot from his lectures even when information isnt on the PP slide. He gives lots of extra credit and you write 5 papers in total. Its a doable class but he makes you work.
In hindsight, the textbook was probably necessary as the test questions were very specific. Not too hard but TONS of extra credit is offered through participation which brought a low B to an A. Super personal and truly cares. Highly recommend him for any SOC course
Downing is hands down my favorite professor I've ever had. He is hilarious, makes his lectures super entertaining, and there's barely any assignments. Only downside is the food matters paper. But he had SO much extra credit that it brought my grade from a 92 to 102! Cannot recommend this class enough
Jason is a wonderful human. The class has four short papers, one super long one, and four tests. He provides lots of extra credit (brought my grade up 10%). I loved his class and plan on taking his other one. He makes class interesting and fun. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should go because he is just that great!!
I had downing in my first semester as a student. He is very funny and a great professor. Attendance is extra credit, but it helps a lot. Do not show up to class if you are not going to pay attention or use your phone, he will call you out. This class had a lot of papers, some of them long, but if you try your best you will end up with an A or B.
Downing is a passionate and careful professor. His lectures were the best part of my day and I would gladly take his class again.
I was understand a very traumic situation and he didnt respond to the 13 emails I had sent him through out the semester and even with student case management he never took the time to be understanding, helpful, or accommodating for extreme circumstances. He was very unprofessional and sends emails stating he will ignore u to the general whole.
JASON DOWNING IS THE BEST PROFESSOR YOU WILL EVER HAVE! He makes this class so entertaining, I would almost consider changing my major just to have another class with him. He outlines work very well and is specific on what you need to do/what he wants from you. He is generous with extra credit and is very understanding. He is THE BEST.
Took the online version of the class due to the pandemic but I wish I could have experienced his energy in real life such an amazing soul. Keeps it raw and real with you very hilarious and only teacher and class I actually attended the zoom meetings and watched the lectures without boredom. Best sociology teacher at CSU by far. So many extra cred
I love Downing. He is so passionate about what he teaches and he is incredibly funny and entertaining. He was really easy to reach if you had any questions or concerns. He definitely shows his opinions in the course material, but he doesnt penalize you if you dont agree with his stance.
He has not responded to several of my emails now. And when he responded to one of them, he avoided the rest of the email which was a question about grading. I have emailed him twice since then and he has not responded to me. He told me he would have two of my assignments graded two weeks ago and hasn't. Also liberal-politics heavy. Clear agenda
This is an easy class to pass, but don't expect to learn much more than you already know about environmental issues. Do not follow the study guide, because it will not help you on the exams. Test questions are pulled straight from the book and are VERY specific with numbers, not concepts. Tests ALWAYS have questions on material not yet covered.
Downing is a super chill dude. He is dorky and makes lectures fun. There is about 4 exams and some solution papers and a few discussions. Exams are timed but open book, as long as you read the chapter and listen to lectures you will be good. If you need a easy diversity and global awareness class this is it.
Jason was a very caring and wonderful individual. His lectures are easy to follow and he posts them on Canvas, making it easy to access if you cant make it to class!
Easy class with pathetic agenda pushing. Creates own definitions and uses outdated statistics with often wrong information. Instantly will shuts down any contrary arguments and label them "know it all students." Majority of class is wasted listening to off topic personal nonsense. Obvious overreliance on TA's as well.
Jason LISTENS to everyone's opinions, and values ALL of his students. Classes get into deep and interesting discussions, because it's Sociology, and he takes time to take on challenging topics. Lectures are entertaining and informative, participation heavy, but not required, food drive for extra credit connects to real life! AWESOME!
The online class is basically just you reading a ton and writing papers. If you can read and have good time management this class is fairly easy. Put in the work and you will do well. Spends a chunk of time talking about climate change and how veganism can help the environment which clearly pissed off the student below. lmao.
Had Jason for two classes, he's EXCELLENT, the negative comments here, are obstructive people who can't handle a balanced discussion. Critical thinking is what you do in these classes, and I've never seen Jason discourage an opinion no matter what it is. Too many salty students who would rather surf the Internet in class and not work.
I have taken 2 of Jasons classes. His lectures are somewhat entertaining however you wont learn much in this class. He is a cool guy but very much grades you based on your opinions. Get ready for his insanely long papers that are graded very hard. However, the tests are easy. Rule of thumb: the more liberal you are the better you will do!
The class was decent. There were 11 quizzes, 2 assignments, 1 project, and 4 tests. The project was 3 different papers combined into one "project". The tests contained random statistics more than the actual content. You would be better off emailing a TA to receive anything back (they do not respond often either). There is a lot of extra credit.
Super easy class. The lectures are thought provoking and interesting, although not thorough in the course content. Read the book and you will do fine. Lots of extra credit opportunities. Generally a low effort class that inspired me to think about new perspectives. Jason is very casual and down to earth.
Downing will make you question ever signing up for his class. Lectures and assignment directions are confusing. Downing canceled class so much we did not go over many chapters but were still tested on them. Rude to students who have ideas that contradict his. Makes you do assignments that are not relevant to the class and pay for participation.
This professor is super care-less, he would never respond to any emails. The class itself isn't hard but he includes too much information on the slides that it's hard to study for the exams. He also includes things on the exams that we never went over in class and the study guides were irrelevant.
Jason was one of the best professors I have ever had. He made class entertaining and always encouraged discussions. Beware that he gives more information than what is on the slides, which means attendance is crucial if you want to do well on the exams.
Jason is really cool, but his tests are hard and super specific to lectures and reading. Study guides are set up "big picture," but the tests are not. He is a super funny and interesting person, but the TAs in this class are the main communicators. I enjoyed this class, but found it harder than a 200 level usually is for me.
Jason was a pretty cool prof. he actually cared for his students, although his TAs were the main resource for communication. His tests were hard, you must read the chapters and do the study guides to pass, his paper was an easy A (make sure to not leave it for the last minute, start research once the paper is introduced).
If you are a freshman coming to college, I urge you to avoid this professor. It will give you a terrible idea for college professors. I took this class as a Senior and can safely say he was by far the worst. He is over the top political every day with his leftist views. And as someone who isn't even republican, it's obnoxious. The worst prof at csu
Miserably bad at his job. For one, he literally gave us a long ass (8+ pages) paper due that had nothing to do with the actual course. It was on food and farming, simply because he enjoys farming himself, but it had 0 to do with anything taught surrounding the class. Annoying personality. Please do not take this course or find a different professor
AWESOME class! Jason cares about EVERYONES perspective! Discussion encouraged! GTAs grade your work, but he will help you and give feedback. Assignments let you choose topics! Food project was cool. Best CSU prof, FUN lectures! Enforces masks, which is appreciated.
so so political and pushes his opinions as fact, grades based on opinion. Stay away from this prof
Jason wants you to succeed, especially if you put in some effort and go to class. Rarely had homework other than a few essays going along with the lectures and textbook. Made me engaged in the hopes that helping our environment is possible! If you attend class you will do fine. Also offers a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester!
The epitome of a "lunatic leftist" -- everything is politicized and he's constantly preaching his biased point of view to the point of nausea. Avoid.
Jason is alright. He is super fun and energetic, but I feel like I don't learn a lot in lectures. There are usually long class discussions that don't really relate to the material. Also after the first test he made us watch a documentary about chickens for no reason? So definitely skip class after the first exam. Super easy class though.
Pretty easy class and Jason definitely has fun lectures. Lectures are not required to attend but there is extra credit through top hat which is pretty helpful. Tests are basically just on terms so not bad but the food matters paper totally sucks. Get started on that early. Definitely has some bias but that just comes with a soc class.
Jason is a good dude. However, he is not a good professor. His TA does all of the grading, so don't be afraid of his liberal perspectives, but he assigns unnecessary assignments and is not very informative during lectures. Just read the textbook and stay home, he's better suited for a high school course. I'm sure he'll see this and laugh.
I really don't like Downing. He's charismatic, sure, but he's not a good teacher. I feel like I haven't learned anything in this course. All of the homework is busy work. Please take this course with a different professor; I wish I would've known.
Always brings great energy and enthusiasm, but best part of class is being exposed to a TON of material, vids, ideas that are new, in an open and supported way, Jason respects all of his students and diversity is VERY important to this class....all docs we watched in class I had not seen before. Extra credit is feeding people, not another paper!
The class could have been WAY more organized. This is my second semester taking one of his classes and to sum it up, he doesn't do more with students than he has to. Don't email him about anything. The course outline wasn't really followed. Exams can be tough when asking you to recall information like what the numbers were on a table.
jason is pretty good. he has some mixed opinions but my experience was mostly positive. we started out on an awkward foot with him having a strange reaction to my disability accommodations but he apologized and we had a good relationship. i learned so much during class and he is really fun to be in class with
I got up for class, because he makes it fun and interesting. Allowed me to turn in some late work, understands students schedules. People complaining he is biased choose not to participate, their loss, my gain. DEF take a class from Jason, if you want to really learn and process with students instead of non stop lectures.....
Just finished an Enviro Soc class with Jason, and it was fun, I DEF want to live in an earthship! He challenges you to think, so avoid if you dont want to discuss your learning! Great Soc class, NEW info, volunteer opps for extra credit, good stuff! CRUSHES music before every class!
Let me be clear: if you don't want to have your beliefs and/or snowflake ideology challenged, do NOT take Jason's classes. He is very political at times, so if you can't handle that, find another class. However, if you actually care about the topic, and want to have your beliefs challenged, then I think you'll find his classes fun and interesting.
Exams are very annoying, he wants students to do 8 essay questions in 2 hours. Grading is also terrible and harsh and doesn't give detailed comments.
I like Jason as a person, he's pretty funny. However, he constantly pushes his liberal ideologies as factual and leaves no room for the other side of the argument. And don't even get me started on the Food Matters paper. We never talked about the topic in class and this paper is supposed to be 8+ pages, I felt like I was clueless while writing it.
He used lecture slides and was a very down-to-earth and chill person. Great first course for incoming freshmen or just want to take an easy AUCC.
Best teacher I have ever had. Actually cares about what he teaches and makes class enjoyable to attend!
If you're willing to wake up at 8 am for SOC100 then go for it. Personally it was hard for me and then I started falling behind but then, I did start going to class because his lectures are actually really funny and I have genially learned so much. Great personality and funny character.
Absolutely loved this class. Downing is extremely passionate about what he is teaching and it makes the lectures very entertaining and interesting. All assignments are very straightforward and there are many, many opportunities for extra credit. I would recommend taking this class to anyone and everyone, even if it's unrelated to your major!
Jason is great! He genuinely cares for his students, and for the material he teaches, he will challenge your beliefs and if you're offended by that maybe you need to reevaluate what you believe in. Lectures cover a lot, and notes will help, but missing a few classes shouldn't hurt you, and download tophat for his class, it'll help lectures!
He's a cool guy and the lectures are all on canvas. He has lots of discussions but you don't have to participate. There's also no final
He is super passionate and is great for an intro class. I wish the class was more in depth because a lot of the content seemed like common sense stuff, but I think that's just how it goes with a 100 level class, nothing he could've changed about it.
Amazing professor. He genuinely cares about the world and is very passionate about what he teaches. There are many writing assignments but he gives clear expectations and so many extra credit opportunities. He makes class really fun to go to with his lectures and personal stories. My favorite class by far.
Hes the coolest dude ever. Super chill and fun. Tests can be a bit unpredictable, lots of obscure statistics you need to memorize. There are also quite a few papers. Hes a very engaging speaker. Ask him about his band
Downing encourages discussion, don't take him if you aren't open to hearing different world views. He has 4 tests that count as the midterm and final and one long paper(~10 pages). Don't procrastinate the paper, it won't be fun. He's an easy grader and gives points back on tests if the question was confusing, but most are common sense.
Jason is a great professor. Tests are slightly more difficult but the course is amazing. you have one paper throughout the whole semester and it is an easy paper, it is research heavy but once it is done it's a breeze.
I loved Jason!! I took his SOC100 class and He was very charismatic and very caring, down to earth and hilarious. He was a great professor and I learned a lot in the class. He did have one big paper project due at the end of the semester that focused on food.
Jason is a very overrated professor. He is a very fun and energetic guy no doubt . However he is extremely liberal and it doesn't care about other views. If you are a white male business major he will automatically think you are what makes society dysfunctional. He called me out in front of the entire lecture hall when my mask fell below my nose.
I do think that Jason is a good guy. However, he is not the best professor. He makes his class somewhat fun but, I feel most of the time there is no structure to his class and a lot of what we learn skews more opinion based. This class was not what I was expecting it to be. Exams were extremely hard as well as a 8+ page paper... i dont recommend :/
Jason was my favorite professor I have had so far, he was so funny and always made sure the lectures were relevant and engaging. He made the classroom a comfortable place for everyone and always had music playing before class started. He was also really easy to reach too.
I enjoyed going to Jason's lectures and it was obvious he liked and was knowledgeable about the material he was teaching. He also stays up to current events and pop culture and weaves them into his teaching which is cool. The paper in the middle of the semester is a monster, but the rest of the class is pretty easy
Super nice + funny dude. I wouldn't bother taking notes during lecture, tests were solely based on the textbook and he won't mention that in class. Do the knowledge checks + quizzes for each chapter before the test and you'll be set.
LOVE JASON!!!!!!!! His lectures are so interesting and he is beyond funny. Start the food matters paper sooner rather than later.
He was a great guy and really nice. I took this class online during the summer. He kinda disappeared for a few weeks and did not respond to my emails requesting office hours (by appointment only) or answer any of my questions. This made it a little difficult because the assignment outlines weren't always super clear. Take the class in person.
He's very clear about what is required to pass the class and gives ample time to do paper and offers a lot of resources to help. Does a lot of iclickers, but his lectures are absolutely hilarious and the class is so much fun to attend, even as an 8am.
This is the second class I have taken from him because I love the structure of the class and always enjoy going. He offers several extra credit opportunities that make it easy to get your grade up. All you need to know is to go to class and listen in on the things he says will be on the test. The only homework is a few papers throughout the class.
I really enjoyed the environment Jason created. Very down to earth guy, his lectures are absolutely hilarious. There is very little pressure or stress (at least in SOC100). One thing, though; he is definitely politically left leaning and makes that apparent in lecture. For me, this is not an issue but I see why it could be for some people.
Jason is an incredible professor who is obviously VERY knowledgeable and enthusiastic about sociology. I rarely left his class bored. The class has a decent amount of writing that is annoying if you wait until the last minute like I did. The tests are very easy, most info is from the lectures . Also, the extra credit is very beneficial!
Lectures are Jason going on random tangents of useless information that wont be on him exams. Exams are questions that are so poorly worded that makes them impossible to comprehend. He has to give back points on every exam for this reason. Don't take this class with him unless you want to completely teach yourself and sit through useless lectures.
Jason Downing is an amazing professor who makes the whole class laugh. The class is not hard if you just show up and listen. Everyone complains about the Food Matters Paper, however, he tells you the first day to start early on and continues to remind you. The only thing is that Prof. Downing could be better at responding to emails.
This is the second class I have taken with Jason and it was still a lot of fun. There is one long paper that I dreaded but it's not that bad if you start early enough. I would recommend taking his soc 225 class rather than soc 100. A lot of the class content is common sense so it's almost impossible to fail
I thought this class was a sociology course, not a course all about Jason Downing himself. I learned more about this individual and what his opinions are than the actual course material he was supposed to go over in lectures. If you have any opinion that is different from his, good luck on the exams-- he makes them himself.
His lectures are consistently engaging, and he does use iClicker so having attendance does matter, but skipping a few lectures here and there won't impact the grade too much - just watch his pre-recorded lectures if you miss one. There is one paper for the class - it is totally doable and you get a ton of time to get it done.
I really enjoyed Downing's class, he made his lectures exciting and very informational. He uses iClicker which ends up as a grade later in the semester (you'll be fine if you miss a couple of classes). There was no final/midterm exam for this class (just 4 tests throughout the semester). There is a huge soul draining paper, but it's graded easily.
He comes across as an inexperienced try hard who can't see the forest for the trees. He's a stickler about arbitrary things instead of quality of work. He tries to be "cool" but it feels like a cover for not knowing what he's doing. I don't know what his credentials are but he doesn't operate like any other teacher I've had in over 3 years.
He is not a fair grader. He gives very little helpful feedback, and even when you follow his feedback he is unlikely to give you a complete grade. His opinions on what is good change week to week. He spends more time being goofy in his videos and making dated pop culture references than he does investing in students.
Jason Downing is truly one of the most unique teachers I have ever had, and that is for all the worst reasons. Both his grading criteria are feedback extremely unclear and he spends the majority of the (few) lectures HE actually gives making jokes to entertain himself. This class isn't about sociology, it's about Downing's obsession with Food.
Do not take this class. This professor would never fairly grade my work. His instructions for what he wants done in an assignment for full points are NEVER clear and it's very unlikely he'll ever give you full points for anything you do. He also assigns projects over breaks and gives very little feedback as to why you received the grade you got.
Grades poorly and doesn't give feedback AT ALL.There is a big project towards the end of the semester about food like it was some nutrition class and not sociology. The ONLY extra credit assignment is about food too. I would recommend looking for some other professor. He is funny but there isn't much you can get from that.
Jason's class is fun and interesting. Real life examples, and allows us to choose topics that are interesting......if you want a free grade, this is not the class for you, interesting topics with lots of energy and knowledge, with some extra credit, this is it, changed my major to Soc! everyone's views are encouraged!
I took Jason's Class in the Spring and honestly the best choice ever, he's one of the best teachers I have had during my college career. Honestly he's the best try his class out!
He's such a fun lecturer. It's a super laid back and fulfilling course if you're looking for an aucc I think this class and this teacher will treat you very well! Make sure you food matters project is something that excites you since that will be the main course of the class and don't be afraid to talk to him or ask for help he's super cool.
Class was entertaining and fun to learn, not an overwhelming amount of work by any means. Jason gives Rhett from good mythical morning vibes and is very funny.
Was nervous to take his class but he is down to earth, flexible, and understanding. his lectures are interesting and welcomes different perspectives from his students. his lectures and slides are easily found on canvas if you miss class. good professor and good person. exams are quite easy and so are his assignments.
This class with Professor Downing can be a mixed bag. While he makes lectures engaging, the grading and feedback can be inconsistent. The food-focused assignments are a bit off-topic for sociology. However, Unstuckstudy proved useful for preparing and staying on top of the coursework.
Good guy, very funny and engaging. I struggled because my papers were graded harshly and he sometimes rushes through material too fast to understand it.
Would not recommend this professor if you can help it. Near impossible to reach outside of class, if he does get back to you, his emails are vague and unhelpful. Should be a food or nutrition class; he only really talks about food, his farm, and his chickens. Weird teaching style that isn't informational to the course material. Would not recommend.
Jason is my FAV prof @ CSU! GREAT lectures, topics relate to REAL life, HIGHLY recommend, and HE CARES! Fun class, manageable work, he respects EVERYONE'S opinions and class has lots of discussions!
Jason Downing is one, if not the best, prof I have had in college. He connected sociology to everything individual and unique to each person, If you have the opportunity to take one of his classes I highly recommend as he was one of the few professors I had I can tell actually cared about what he was teaching
The lectures for this class were always very entertaining as Jason is a funny guy. If that is all you're looking for in a class, then I would definitely recommend him. If you are looking to learn a lot about sociology and grow your knowledge, I would maybe look at other professors. He is a really cool guy, but I didn't find this class educational.
I took a 300 level Theory class and it was great! Projects that are interesting and matter to me, discussions that made me think, and Jason had the class thinking creatively, which made me want to go to class. Theory isn't easy, but he made it fun, so I learned more...DEF recommend.
Picked a gen Ed class, and SCORED! Friends told me to take Jason's class, and it did NOT disappoint. One of my FAV professors EVER! BIG class, but he made your opinions count, and he made class FUN! Minoring in Soc now!
Lowest grade I might get this semester, BEST class! Food Drive and feeding people for extra credit is cool, he is honest and upfront, topics are fun, I learned a lot! Take his class!
Super funny and nice guy, lectures are engaging. Kind of took this class as a filler but ended up actually liking it. Be prepared to write some big research papers, but they are definitely doable. Only thing I will say is grading is really inconsistent and slow, but a huge extra credit assignment is offered every year and tests are easy.
Jason is the most entertaining professor ever, making each class funny and enjoyable.
Not hard at all
i loooved downing's class, i added soc as my second major a month in because it had spoken to me. his lectures are very immersive and he explains the topics so so well, and there's a lot of participation despite it being suuuch a large class. the assignments were not hard, lectures were great, overall my favorite class of the semester
I absolutely loved this class. I had to take this class to fulfill a credit but I am so glad I took this class. Professor Downing made the lectures so fun and engaging. Going to the lectures is definitely helpful for exams and the essays he assigns but it is never a class you will dread going to. I learned lots of valuable information!
Easy course, but does not teach material for tests. You have to teach yourself the material in the text book because the lectures are never about the actual material. He is a great person and has good intentions but does not excel in his teaching skills.
Jason is funny and can be a good professor, but his lectures this semester were super unhelpful for exams and we had to teach ourselves the material. The workload of this class is manageable, but Jason is slightly biased in what and how he teaches and has his own agenda with the Food Matter project; it was more about food than sociology.
Made every class fun to attend, and lectures were always interesting to listen to.
Lectures are very engaging. Slides are posted, and are very helpful for preparing for the exams. Exams are multiple choice. Papers are graded by the TA's. I got sick and had a family emergency at the same time and when I asked for a few days extra on an assignment he got mad and only gave me 1 day when it was a very difficult time, not understanding
Jason Downing is a very passionate teacher. He keeps the class engaging and he is a fair grader considering he doesn't give in-depth rubrics. I have enjoyed his class, and I deeply appreciate his enthusiasm.
Very accentric and engaged. He cares about his students and will go the extra mile to help you out if you are struggling. He is very passionate about environmental sociology and social justice.
He is a very passionate professor and incredibly caring for the humans and non-humans of earth, and is very knowledgable, but he does not post details of what the class is doing each week and a lot of the class is spent on personal stories instead of class material.
Uses iClicker for attendance and questions. Super easy class, and there is reasoning behind the food matters paper, just start it early because it can be daunting. Jason is really funny and makes the class fun. I would recommend his class every time.
Amazing lectures, very engaging, really awesome guy.
This class is great if you're into learning about the environment
Methods class, projects that really DO sociology, funny dude, LOTS of chances to participate, would recommend!
I missed two exams, so I have to retake this course, and I'm choosing to take it with Mr. Downing again. Entertaining and fun, manageable workload, easy exams (if you study)---but iClickers could be your downfall. Attendance matters. Fun class overall. Not the most communicative or empathetic professor (at least over email).
I LOVED this class. So interesting and Mr. Downing is one of the best professors i've ever had.
Very fun prof who makes sure that lectures are engaging and fun. He engages in a lot of great conversations on sociological issues with students. Textbook is mandatory, tests focus a lot on the textbook, but he expands on topics in class. Great professor (especially in the morning to get you energized), would take his class again!
The class seems informal, but there's a lot of learning and a lot of fun projects.... Jason is down to earth and supports students while at the same time pushing us to be creative. The guest speakers were amazing in this environmental sociology class as well! GOAT.
He is a chill professor, class is overall easy. BUT he loves to assign huge projects with vague and unclear descriptions, often contradicts or changes rubric ,deadlines etc, and doesn't really teach the material. Lecture is filled with his personal stories and doesn't get to the content. Thinks he is "woke" but really is just a guy from Colorado
He has very engaging lectures and cares for his students. I thought the material we learned in class was pretty controversial as a person who follows Christian beliefs. The food matters project was the death of me and felt unnecessary.
Overall I liked the course, however his biases/personal anecdotes overtook learning actual material. Lectures don't cover material, you HAVE to read the textbook and learn for yourself. The Food Matters project felt unnecessarily long and unrelated to the course as a whole. A great, funny person- just not the best professor.
Professor Downing is passionate about what he teaches. However, he does not teach it well. Your grade is almost entirely based on four assignments, which have unclear expectations. Professor Downing also provides little to no feedback on assignments. The feedback that is received is almost always the same copy and pasted response from last week.
