This is Dr. Fisette's first semester at UNR, and the school is lucky to have him. He is excellent at explaining difficult philosophers and their ideas, gives EXTENSIVE feedback on papers, and has a goofy sense of humor. He responds fast to emails, which many professors do not, and is very understanding if you have an issue.
Dr. Fisette's class is so much fun! With his over-the-top enthusiasm for the subject, he takes what could very easily be confusing and boring and makes it very understandable and enjoyable. Some of his lectures are a riot, because he is just so into it! Lots of reading, but if you go to class consistently you should be able to keep up.
I loved Dr. Fisette's World Religion lectures! He was very engaging, speaking directly to us, instead of flipping slides for a hour. His tests are very well-laid out; ten multiple choice, ten matching, and three essay questions. Aside from three tests, there was one group project - which at first was hell, but was honestly a very fun project.
Readings every night, essays are long and he grades hard. Definitely knows what hes talking about but not very clear.
He grades tough, but then again there's only three things (2 papers, 1 exam. There's a rubric for the essays that tells you what he's looking for, and the essay prompts come with specific suggestions about organization too. Classes are a mix of lecture and discussion. Takes attendance, but is pretty lenient if you let him know in advance what's up.
In love
He is awesome if you are struggling. By far one of the most understanding professors. His midterm was brutal, and his class was really hard, but if you talk to him about what you're struggling with he will be more then happy to help you out. Great lectures and attendance is mandatory.
Fisette is the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are awkwardly funny and at times eloquent. He expects a lot from his students, but then again I took away a lot from the course, too.
Professor Fisette is one of my favorite teachers in the philosophy department. His lectures are long but he always so is excited to teach you which keeps you involved and paying attention. He gives weekly quizzes but tells you if they will be on the reading or on the lecture. Always super willing to help students.
I just took this class to get my global context credits in, but it's honestly my favorite class. Dr. Fisette is really great and even though you don't really need to come to every class or understand everything, his lectures always brighten my day and I go to every one. If you complete the study guide questions, the tests should be no problem.
Dr. Fisette is one of the best professors at UNR! His lectures are long & very-detailed, but he always makes them interesting. The exams require a lot of writing but if you review the study guides he gives out (which tells you EXACTLY what will be on the test), you'll be set! I'd definitely recommend taking this course whether it's required or not!
Really nice guy and is really passionate about the topic making discussions interesting. He grades reading assignments and the essays harsh but overall, fun class. Be prepared to have to be at every class, read a lot, participate in interesting discussions, and learn a lot of things about life.
Dr. Fisette is one of the most engaging professors I have ever had. His lectures are heavy in class discussion and he does well going over the material in original and thought-provoking ways. Work is challenging but reasonable. He has an amazing sense of humor that adds to the brilliance of his teaching. And he's incredibly cute. A definite keeper.
He is by far one of the most inspirational professors I have EVER had. I am so sad this will be my last semester with him (I took him two semesters because I loved his classes) He is ALWAYS willing to help you and makes ethics and political philosophy fun. He can be a hard grader, but if you go to is office hours you'll do just fine.
Fisette's class was always something I looked foreward to going to. He is clearly passionate and interested in his work, and he makes his classes just as funny and interesting. Grade-wise the class is made up of just 3 tests and 1 group project, so do your best on every one.
Tests are hard, however he does give a study guide. You are only allowed to miss class twice. He also gives out assignments at the end of class that are due at the beginning of the next class. He makes it a discussion class which was awesome. Paper is 7-9 pages long but replaces one of the tests.
He's a nice guy and all. The study guide is literally the test so memorize it. The subject is just really hard.
Really hard class, but I learned a lot.
A really fun class on a topic--religion--that could have been boring. It's a really easy class--he gives you the exam a week ahead of time as a study guide--but you probably need to attend nearly all the lectures.
You can not only name-drop, but understand, key texts like Descartes and Kierkegaard after taking this course. Lots of sometimes hard readings, and mostly exam based grade, but worth it overall.
He teaches the material very well, is engaging, and caring. The material is super interesting. However, he is a tough grader especially on papers. If you don't write like philosophers do, chances are you will get a low grade on it. The class consists of a 2 exams (gives you them as study guides), 2 papers, reading assignments, and participation.
Best professor ever. But beware the multiple choices!
He was very animated and made a class that I assumed would be boring entertaining. I learned and retained more about world religions than I thought I would because of him. Great guy and great teacher!
Very nice person and is always always willing to help you and talk more about the subject. He admits this class is tough, but is very encouraging. He is energetic in his lectures and makes this class as smooth as possible.
Hands down the best professor I have ever had! Dr. Fisette is passionate about philosophy and it shows through his lectures. He has the ability to make even the most mundane topics relevant and fun to learn. He is one of the toughest graders I've had as far as essays are concerned but gives extremely useful feedback.
I love his World Religions class. It makes me consider changing my major to religious studies. He's adorable, delightfully awkward and always hilarious. This is my favorite class that I've ever taken. The subject material is inherently interesting but he makes it even more so. He clearly knows a lot about the subject he is teaching. 10/10.
The class was really interesting and it was never boring. He makes the topic seem really interesting when he talks about them. Not a lot of tests and he gives study guides. Do the study guides, study the study guides, and you'll definitely pass the test.
Fisette is one of the hardest professors I've ever had, but I learned the most in his classes than I have in any other class. His classes are very reading heavy, but his lectures are super accessible and informative, so if you didn't fully understand the reading, you can just ask questions the next day. Go to office hours!
Amazing Lectures. Comes to class very prepared and as long as you have the weeks reading with you, you'll do fine. Also a pretty decently funny guy. I would recommend him if you're genuinely interested in the subject. I wouldn't say he's easy because the few bigger assignments you have are a lot of work, but overall, He's a solid professor.
The class is interesting if you are interested in world religions and super easy if you study, he gives study guides that are the exact same as the tests. he is easygoing and helps you with the study guides if you ask.
One of the best lecturers on this campus. He is very humorous, but also philosophical (duh). He has a very interesting group project where a group of people study and teach about an assigned religion. The class is very fun, it was my favorite class. His tests are extensive, but he gives them to you a week before to prepare everything. Take this!!!
Amazing. Fisette makes me feel like I'm actually getting an education in Reno. He is so entertaining that I willingly took his 7:30am class over another boring yet 'easier' professor at a later and more convenient time. Lots of reading. Tests in his lower division have multiple choice, upper division seem like there are only essays. Take him.
I really enjoyed his class. He's knowledgeable and knows how to communicate his knowledge well. If you don't understand something, just go to office hours and he is super helpful. You have to work for your grade, but taking this class is totally worth it--you'll learn a ton!
Dr. Fisette was simply phenomenal. While the content was not something I would be naturally interested in, Dr. Fisette made me love it. He explains complicated philosophical ideas in a way that is very easy to understand. It would be a tragedy to not take him if you are a phil major or minor.
the class is about happiness and how you can become happy. i enjy the class but you have to do the readings as its really text based. clear and interesting lectures and discussions (you need to talk).while i've found the grading easy i'm putting more work into the class readings than i expected. don't take if you don't want to work hard.
Hes exceptional at teaching 11/10 would recommend. If you dont talk in class or dont come itll hurt your grade a significant amount. Hes a pretty tough grader on every assignment but hes not unreasonable and its still totally possible to get an A if you work for it. You can tell he believes in teaching you and not just having you memorize.
Professor Fisette is exceptionally entertaining, engaging, and fun to interact with. He has a fantastic blend of seriousness and fun in all of his lectures, and builds great rapport with his students. The class itself relies heavily on the exams and one big paper/presentation, but none of these were exceptionally difficult.
This is a really hard, but fun-in-a trippy/mind-blowing-way class. You'd think it would be easy becuase it's a 200 level class, but the readings are really difficult and there's no way around it given the subject matter. Fisette makes the texts come alive and has a way of making them tell a story that is interesting even if you're doing ELP.
Dr. Fisette is SUCH a great professor!! I wish he could teach others to be like him. He really knows his stuff and makes an effort to connect the content to current events. I probably couldn't have been bothered to come to a 7:30 class bi-weekly if he hadn't been so enthusiastic. Participation in class discussions and reading are mandatory.
Dr. Fisette is one of my favorite professors this semester!I don't love the topic, but Dr. Fisette makes it easy to talk about and helps clarify the readings. There is lots of homework, but it's all worthwhile. Be ready to complete a homework assignment prior to every bi-weekly class meeting. If you have to take this course (like me),take it with him
Class matter did not meet to core objectives outlined by the university. Class focused on evil the whole semester, and I am not sure how this is really relevant to the topic of Ethics. Regardless, he knows his stuff but the class is tough.
I'm in a STEM field, but Fisette is the best professor I've ever had. Would explain anything and everything in office hours, and while the exams were definitely not easy, they were fair. If you're a grade-grubber, not for you. If you actually want a college education, take him.
His lectures are very informative and entertaining. There are three exams and he gives a study guide for each one a week before the exam date. The project was not exceptionally difficult, but writing the essay will take a lot of work if you're aiming for an A.
Dr. Fisette is easily the best professor I have ever had. This course has lots of reading, homework after every class, and the exams are quite challenging, but Dr. Fisette always makes himself available to help you out when you need it. This course may be difficult, but if you are genuinely interested, I promise it will be worth it (:
Dr. Fisette is great. If you have to take PHIL210, he is the ONLY professor worth taking. His lectures are so entertaining and he's hilarious. The only thing is don't waste your money buying either of the textbooks. I opened them maybe twice to clarify stuff but I could've googled it. Everything you need for the tests is from what he says in class
Lectures are very interesting but you actually need to do the readings and buy the text books but they arent to expensive.
Fantastic lecturer. You have to work for your grade, but Dr. Fisette is very accommodating and is always willing to help you out. Prep for the exams in advance, because they are difficult. Read everything he assigns, participate in discussion, pay attention in class, and utilize office hours.
Would give Dr. Fisette a 6 if I could, his material is dense as it is related to early philosophy but he gives relevant examples and lectures are engaging (which is a huge compliment considering this was a 7:30 am course). Gives excellent feedback on papers. Stays after every class to answer any questions. Awesome guy.
He's so good that I was actually driven to rate him despite never having done this before. The way he lectures makes me forget I'm on Zoom and feel like I'm really there with him in the classroom. He takes all questions and discussion, and speaks frankly about religion in the best way possible. You'll get out of it what you put into it!
You HAVE to go to his lectures to pass. You have to pay attention to them as well. He does go kind of fast so it is hard to keep up with the different things he's saying. He words his exams in a really complicated way which makes it hard to understand but talking it out to people makes it easier. The class is graded on a paper, quizzes, and exams.
Honestly my favorite professor this semester. Was a great lecturer and made the class super interesting. There aren't many grades, so its hard to buffer your grade, so do well on the quizzes (which are only 2-3 questions usually). He also gives tests out early, which helps a bunch. While attendance isn't "mandatory", you need to go to pass!!
Really funny guy and makes you think about the things he is teaching you about. If you skip class you will have no idea what to write about on the tests but the lectures are interesting. Able to talk to him through appointment and email.
I learned a lot in this class but I was surprised by the difficulty of the material considering it was just a 200 level class. I went to every lecture but still struggled with the quizzes. The midterms were okay, I didn't have to take the final which was cool. He posts the lectures on Canvas but you need to go to class for them to make sense.
I took this course online during covid times. Dr. Fisette is so cool! His lectures are very a engaging and it makes you want to participate and ask questions even if your usually shy. Some concepts can be tricky and difficult to understand. However, reach out to him and hell be more than fine to explain until you get it. Awesome guy!
This has been one of the most demanding classes in terms of expectations. The content of the class is actually very interesting, which is why it's so disappointing that he grades so harshly. It makes the course not enjoyable. Even though the two CO credits sound appealing, do not be fooled, this is not an easy class to get an A or even a B in.
Interesting lectures and great prof. Not a lot of things to be graded on(100 points for whole sem). You have to be in class to actually understand the material. Harsh grader too but his study guides are literally the test so that helps you prepare. Study groups also help. I wish there were more opportunities to interact with other students in class.
Dr. Fisette cares about his work and really tried to engage students when the material is less exciting. His lectures are well-crafted, but make sure you listen and take notes or the 2 midterms will be very difficult. He makes himself available 4x a week with office hours so definitely go in and ask questions. He wants you to succeed!
Dr. Fisette is a great teacher his enthusiasm makes the class a great experience, I feel like I learned a lot even in areas that I already knew about. He is a tough grader if you don't try but if you try in the class you will do well. I loved this class, and I have talked about it to friends so much I know a couple of people who are taking it now.
Dr. Fisette makes lectures really interesting. The class isn't too demanding but the tests are kind of hard to finish in time and the questions on tests are worded in the most complicated way. He is a tough grader and will knock you for small things like grammar and spelling on test which is weird to me considering it's not an English class.
I literally hated this class. Find a different teacher if possible. Your grade is base off three exams, your final, and a group project. The exams are hard mc, short answer and then an essay. He is overall funny but I do not like him as a teacher. This class is hard good luck.
He is a very engaging lecturer. His course is engaging and he expects his students to be active participants. This course covered the history of ethical theory, and involved reading nearly 500-600 pages over the course of the semester. He is a very particular person in terms of his expectations, and the papers I wrote I spent a lot of time on.
Professor Fisette was easily the best professor Ive had so far. Really difficult class and a hard grader but if you put in the work you will do well. Hes a great lecturer and makes the super complex topics interesting. You will learn a lot through his class.
Fisette is so much fun! It is a lot of material to learn but he makes the lectures really fun and he is entertaining. You don't need the books, just show up to class and take notes. He also posts his lecture slideshows online. Exams are hard but he gives out study guides with the exam questions a week ahead of time. Study them and you'll do great!
Dr. Fisette is a great professor, he is a great lecturer and very entertaining, so you won't even want to skip class, but even if you still want to it's probably not a good idea because the tests are on material from lecture
I took this class during Spring 2021 when we were still online. This class is one of the most interesting classes that I have taken. The lectures were fun, especially at 8 am. I loved every bit of this class. BUT it will be one of the hardest classes you will take. If you're taking this class for an easy A, do not!
This was the hardest class I have taken, but I learned alot about who I am as a reader and writer. Professor Fisette comes prepared with amazing lectures and are very engaging. Yet, you need to read and really try hard on the tests/essays. Do not slouch off in this class. Other than this, do not be scared because you will learn a lot in this class!
Dr. Fisette is my favorite philosophy professor I have ever had. His lectures are amazing, and he makes it easy to participate. There is a lot of reading, but it is truly worth it. He gives great feedback on tests and essays that help you improve. I highly recommend going to office hours, he is truly there to help you every step of the way.
This teacher lovessssss suck ups!
Professor Fisette is a great lecturer! I enjoy his enthusiastic and engaging lectures. Examination are difficult. 60-75 minutes are provided to write an essay, 5-10 short answers and multiple choice questions. Research essays are also difficult and strict but Dr. Fisette provides clear and easy to follow instructions. These aspects make it hard.
Looking back from the perspective of law school, probs the hardest course I've ever taken, but his exams and papers and teaching style were the closest match to what I'm encountering in law school now. To get the most out of your writing potential, ask him to read polished drafts with you.
Fisette was super entertaining and made class bearable. I typically don't enjoy lecture heavy classes, but his personality and lecture style made me want to go to class. Exams are somewhat difficult, but studying with the study guide he provides is very helpful! He doesn't give assignments, so your grade is based on 3 exams and a research paper.
Drop this class while you still can. Unless you are 100% committed to learning the content of this course, you will not perform well. Students who do not attend lectures or take notes do poorly in class. Four assignments go into the grade book. Fisette is a great professor, entertaining, and accessible outside of class time.
This class is incredibly difficult for a 200-level class. Fisette is an entertaining and great guy, however, the expectations are unreasonable. There are only 4 class assignments that count towards your grade with no extra credit or leniency. Only a very small percentage will earn As and Bs, with a majority earning Cs and below.
Great professor who is extremely knowledgeable and passionate. Lectures are S-tier. That said, this man is a BRUTAL grader. There are only four assignments in total, so margin for error is zilch. Expect little mercy. DO NOT miss class and DO NOT miss studying. You will fail, then probably cry. Be vigilant and attentive and you may survive. 4 stars.
I don't know where all these people whining about 210/World Religions are coming from. He GIVES YOU THE EXACT EXAMS as study guide and he says up front that if you miss even a couple of classes your grade will suffer because of the way the content is woven together. He's amazing and passionate and if you are ready for college you will be fine.
Amazing guy his class difficulty tho is incredibly difficult. Your grade is based up on 3 exams and 1,6-8 page paper. The exams are crazy, a 6-7 paragraph response plus 5, 3-5 sentence written responses and 10 multiple choices. If your able to prioritize this class and sit through 1 hour and 15 minutes of straight lecture 2 times a week, go for it.
He loves to hold his power over people, he will claim you plagiarized a paper when you worked so hard on it.
No other words to say accept one, condescending
Just save yourself the time and money and take this course at tmcc
Literally the worst professor I have ever had. So rude and when you work hard on something he says you plagiarized.
Agreed with the person below who says what a bunch of whiners. You know, Fisette's mother died during the semester and he kept teaching. Maybe those complaining that the course is hard should, you know, grow up and start taking some personal responsibility. Yeah, few assignments, but the TAs get paid garbage wages--Fisette doesn't exploit them.
Professor Fisette gave good lectures and explained concepts in a way that was easier to understand. No one is taking away that he gave good presentations. But his grading system was too critical for a 200 level class. Expectations were too high!!!
cool professor. not so cool class.
Good teacher, lecture heavy but the slides are posted on Canvas. Study guide is exactly like the test. You don't have to do the readings, most of what is on the test can be found in the slides. STUDY THE MULTIPLE CHOICE ON THE STUDY GUIDE!
Dr. Fisette was amazing and I would definently take another class with him. His tests are kind of hard but just because of the amount of things you had to do in such a short time. But if you go to class and take notes and then study you will be fine. He is super knowledgable and his lectures are funny and very interesting.
Mind-blowing stuff. The content is pretty hard because the readings are old (it's a history of phil. class), but it's worth it. In class essays can be difficult to finish, but are okay if you prepare well. Oral exams were intense, but a good challenge and more conversational than I expected.
Hard class for an intro philosophy class. Glad it's over.
This class was tough, wouldn't recommend.
Yes, this class is hard, but if you actually came to college to learn and challenge yourself, and you're interested in philosophy, you need to take it. If you prepare for the exams, you'll do okay. Definitely not a course for slackers. But it is fun, engaging, and mind-blowing.
This class is for you if you are looking for a class that will change your perspective on life and the world. If you are looking for a brainless, easy A, I would not recommend. Dr. Fisette pushes his students to be the best, his lectures will blow your mind. He encourages high levels of thought but it is worth the hard work!
A must take if you're serious about philosophy. As someone from a group traditionally underrepresented in academic philosophy in the West, I appreciated how inclusive he was and how much time he was willing to spend talking with me.
I just took this class to fill the CO12 requirement, and man it was too hard for a 200 level class. So much reading, and you have to go to the lectures if you miss one, you miss so much. save money & take at TMCC
Fisette hurt my feelings and said I plagiarized a paper I worked so hard on and even went to the library and checked out 2 books. Just for him to say because I didn't cite correctly he forced me to withdrawl from the course and uttered the words, "Don't try to fight me on this because I am always right"
So far so good! He has fun and soaring lectures, and if not every part of them is as interesting as every other, that comes with the territory of religion. We just had part of the first midterm and it's exactly like the study he gives us two week in advance!
Interesting class and not too bad if you go to class and take notes. TAs are nice too.
This class is literally all about the effort you put in. If you listen to Dr. Fisette, and you put forth the effort and actually want to be there, you will succeed. However, if you don't go to lecture and don't care, you will fail. Dr. Fisette is an amazing teacher and I would gladly take 210 with him again. 10/10.
Hes really not all that bad. I enjoyed his class and found it very interesting but its definitely a hard class mainly because he grades very little. Like all the grades he puts in are test and if you even slightly do poorly on one your over. Its really discouraging but what can you do.
Fun and easy to talk to outside class, and great socratic class. You definitely need to be prepared to buckle down and read though. The oral exams scared me, but they ended up being not as bad as I feared.
He is an amazing professor, by far one of my favorites. He has an engaging, immersive lecture style that made me look forward to class. He is funny and approachable and is very knowledgeable. I'd recommend going to his office hours to chat and ask questions. Put in effort, attend class, engage in lectures, and you will do fine.
Great lectures, tought but fair.
Horrible. Does not explain things well, does not have office hours, and appointments are always booked up. Grading is super tough, way too tough for an intro level course. All I gotta say is good luck, you'll need it.
I really liked that professor. Take him if you have the chance, as long as you put a little efforts in this class you will be fine.
Only take a class by Fisette if you are in the right head space. He is an extremely tough grader; you only get As if you are beyond perfect. Has told me I got an answer completely right, but I had to do more and gave me a C. Be prepared to read 20+ pages every night. never has office hours
tests are graded harshly but tbf the study guide is literally just the test so like fair enough, as for fisette in general one of my favorite professors, was always open for discussion before and after class and was just very knowledgeable about the subject matter and made lectures very entertaining.
Dr. Fisette is an amazing professor to learn from. He is very passionate and engaging when talking, and makes a lot of jokes as well. He provides you with everything that will be on each exam, from short answer questions to writing prompts. However, his TA's grade everything and it is a bit harsh, or hard to get an A on them.
Dr. Fisette was an incredible lecturer, and even an atheist like myself found his lectures on religion fascinating. That being said, do not take this class expecting an easy A. 75% of your grade for the class is dependent on 3 tests, each of which are writing heavy, graded harshly, and split up over two classes because they are so long.
The professor has an engaging lecture style, but this class requires serious effort. Attendance is a must, and the grading can be tough. Utilize Unstuck study alongside the textbook to stay on top of the material. Overall, a rewarding experience for diligent students.
I don't care what anyone says. Dr. Fisette is the best lecturer at UNR. Yes, his class is tough and he has unilaterally applied high expectations for his students, but he is one of the only professors that ever challenged me in a way that felt intentional and with the purpose of helping me grow. My life path was heavily inspired by him.
Fisette teaching style was not for me, speaks extremely fast and little time to understand the content, explicitly states to not take notes of the slides, grade is based on tests that are writing heavy, however use study guide given as it is the exact test
I took this class online over the summer, but his lecture videos were very clear and easy to follow. The exams were tough, but the study guide provides you with the questions that will be on the exam so that you can practice them in advance. Truly, the only way to get an A on the exams is to memorize your responses to the questions.
Professor Fisette was an amazing professor to have, I found his lectures to be hilarious and very enjoyable. The only thing I would warn you is that he is a very tough grader and most of your grade will come from three tests. Overall I recommend you take his class but get ready to study a lot or you will struggle in the class
I loved Fisette, however I could see how his teaching style may be difficult for some students. His lectures are really entertaining but he talks fast. His tests can be hard but he gives study guides so you know exactly what is on them. Overall he is a really good professor and I enjoyed all the classes I took from him.
The lectures were entertaining and thought provoking. It is important to fully pay attention, you should not be multitasking in this class. Listen when he says to take notes on what he says. I might've had a B if I did not butcher the first exam. Also if you can go to the Friday discussions because they are very helpful. Exams are difficult
He's a great professor but if you have trouble understanding religion and zone out easily, do not take this class if you want a good grade. It's a very interesting course but when it comes to tests, it's kind of hard even though the study guide is identical to the test.
lol hi gang
Objectively exceptional teacher in every way. He is difficult, expects way more than other professors, and his classes are demanding. However, they are the most rewarding phil classes at UNR. Every student on campus should be exposed to his level of rigor and demandingness in philosophy.
Lectures were great & he made the content relatable to anyone who had little to no background knowledge on the religions discussed. Paying attention to what he says in lecture + going over the slides will help with the exams, which count for most of your overall grade. I grew to like this class over the semester, would take one of his classes again
Amazing lecturer, no attendance required, but lecture and test heavy. Tests are handwritten and study guides give test ?'s, but the tests are graded extremely harsh. Take the class if you like the material, but in my experience worrying about keeping your gpa high will drain you in this course.
