EXCELLENT TEACHER. :) FUNNY, Great teacher
SUCKS!
THE WORST TEACHER EVER!! I never looked forward to a D just to pass. I changed my major because of this professor. His slides are practically photocopies of diagrams in the book so its hard to take notes, and he doesnt teach them well anyway. He's fast and hard. I know with wolfe and flores its two evils but totally go for Wolfe.
He is a ok professor, if you read the book like a Monk reads his Bible, you will pass hands down. Notes are useless and so are his slides, but overall he is a cool teacher!
This professor gave you notes. They just weren't helpful on the test. You will fall behind if you don't read your book 24/7. There are no quizzes so the only grades to rely on are the four tests that he gives in class. If I were you I would let this class be the only difficult class that you are taking during that particular semester.
This class is horrible. I loved biology before this course. Dr. Flored does provide notes and pictures, unfortunatley they aren't relevant on the exams, which there are 4 of. No other grades besides the exams and they are difficult. He is a nice guy and really cool, but as far as explaining concepts besides word for word from the book he's awful.
He is an awesome guy and a very 'chill' teacher but my god. Screw his lectures, just read the book. read the book read the book. Otherwise you WILL fail. Hardly anything he says in his lectures is on the exam itself. Not an easy class at all. READ THE BOOK.
Do Not take him!! he's the worst teacher i've ever had. his class is waste of time. just read text book. to read text book is the only way you can pass his class. He and wolfe dont know how to teach.
Tests are very hard, definitly need to read the book. study a lot and go to the si sessions for ex credit. Lectures can be interesting, and some of his test questions do come from his lecture. Means well, but overall not the greatest teacher.
One of the hardest teachers I have ever had. Tests are really hard unless your life is revolved around reading the text book. No other grades except for the tests so if you dont do so good on one of them your pretty much screwed. I recommend taking someone different.
Flores is a very nice, down to earth guy who tries to be helpful but ends up giving useless lectures. Read (and reread) the text. That's 90+% of the tests. His lectures don't really do much more than restate what you can read out of the book. Give this guy some time. He's new, but he's nice and has good prof potential. I'd take him over Wolfe.
Dr. Flores is one of the best professors I've had at UNCC. Yes, you have to read the book and yes, it helps a lot if you come to class. He wants you to understand the material and will go back over it if you ask him. I definitely recommend him for 2120 and 2130.
I have to agree with others in this website. This professor is useless as far as teaching. You can't really avoid him since he is the only one who teaches this course. Avoid him really. His lectures are useless to pass his tests. Read Read Read the book and you might pass with a C.
Really helpful goes out of his way to cover and recover things if you ask him. Go to class and read as much as you can before class.
You silly, silly freshmen. You really need to get adjusted for college life before you take this course. Do not and I repeat, DO NOT take this course if you are not going to study and come to class. Dr. Flores isn't going to give you the answers, come to class read and work hard and you'll do just fine. Stop slacking, he's great.
He's awesome, had him for 2120 and 2130. He wants you to learn, not memorize stuff. I liked him a lot and he still talks to me and knows me by name today. Great guy, take him if you want to work for your grade.
arrogant
Very good professor! Class is not mandatory but highly recommended. Exams are very "thinking outside the box" sort of stuff and can be tricky. A very hard class but you will come out of it knowing what you need to know.
His test are conceptual question. Test are not like his lectures. Hard class. Expects you to know material prior to classes. Need a background in Biology to do well.
the first test was sooo hard, but u learn what he expects of you by the last one.. which doesnt do you much good. howver, there are a lot of oppurtunities to learn outside of class. read the book and go to the SI sessions with samantha or tj to clarify the hard stuff. he is also pretty good about meeting u if you have questions.
this man is really nice, if you STUDY ALL THE TIME then a dream about biology then you will bearly pass, but he is a great guy and he is willing to work with you
This class is HARD! Attendance isn't mandatory but highl reccommended if you want to get this stuff! Test are hard "think outside of the box" questions. If you read the book everyday, all day and go to class, you'll do well.
he enjoys failing people. he's funny...but don't waste my time making jokes in test questions. just ask the question, so i can answer it.
I liked him a lot. For each chapter we went over, I read it once and highlighted. Then I studied THE NOTES and got A's. I think he's a great teacher!
This class is hard your biology book is VALUABLE. Attendence not mandatory but I EMPHASIZE that you go!! No homework NO QUIZZES just 4 TEST (including final) that makes YOUR OVERALL GRADE!! I recommend taking a lower biology before taken this class or waiting till u are MATURE to take this course
hey guys... just so you know, pretty much EVERY bio class is like that... 4 tests = your grade. quit whining. dr. flores is a great teacher who really loves what he does. if you can't handle it, get out now and change your major to communications.
Guy lacks some major pedagogical skills. Yes he may enjoy biology, but he needs to learn to teach undergrads so that they too can enjoy biology as well. His tests have nothing to do with his lectures, and his lectures are completely out of the book which shows how ineffective he is as a professor!
I genuinely like Dr. Flores...as a person, but not as a professor. He is very very willing to help you understand bio better, but his tests are nearly impossible. He asks a lot of hypothetical questions on tests that could have 4 possible answers, so it's tough. Go to his office to get tests and write down the ones you got wrong. It helps a LOT!
i like him!
I hear so many negative comments about him but he truely is a GREAT teacher. YOU NEED TO GO TO CLASS!!! Tests are a bit difficult but for pre Med they should be. As long as you attend and keep up with the reading you shoul do very well. Very smart and energetic teacher!!
Here is a hint for all freshmen taking this course. This is college now you must READ....To pass this class read the chapter and go to class, then take notes on what Dr. Flores presents because that is what he is going to test you on. so yes going to class IS important or you will be studying usless information that he is not going to test you on.
Dr. Flores really IS a nice guy...especially if you go to his office & talk to him. He has to deal with too many immature freshman, so he may seem arrogant or cold at times. You'll have to take him if you're a bio major so here's how to get an A: go to lecture regularly & PARTICIPATE, take notes & take them fast, read the book...no, READ the book!
This man was extremely rude. I emailed him out of concern for my grade, and he sends me an email blessing me out, bc in his words "I obviously didn't study at all"...he wasn't even an effective lecturer... you should attend though to pass. Tests were extremely tough...by far the hardest class I have taken yet (I'm a 2nd semester sophomore)
He's great. Read, go to class, use all study aids provided and you'll at least pull a C.
A down to earth guy that has a passion for Biology and teaching. Took this course over the summer which goes by extremely fast, but the key to success in his class is to READ, READ, and READ. If you have questions, ask, he'll clarify until its understandable. Good Luck!
I took this class twice. First time was during the semester and it was a lot harder. Second time was this summer and it is pretty easy. We have less materials to go through and he seemed so much laid back and nicer during the summer. Read! Read! Read! and pay attention in class. His tests are all multiple choice.
i don't know how anyone can pass his class. his tests are way different from what he teaches. you have to be able to think deep or find the "best answer." i paid attention, wrote down notes, read the book and still did bad.
Dr. Flores is very full of himself. He doesn't really halp you with the material, he basically views his class as a way to weed out several people. He thinks he's the best thing to come to Biology and he will waste your class time with useless stories. One piece of advice read each chapter form start to finish!
Theres only 4 tests and he doesnt really prepare the students well for the test. Theres no activities or study guide to help the students prior to the tests. I would not prefer taking him as a teacher.
Dr. Flores is not a very good teacher. He knows his stuff to be sure, but he can't really get it across to the students. He's on a power trip to hold grades over the students. He does help if you ask but he's very arrogant about it
His tests are extremely detailed and difficult.
Flores has the potential to be a decent teacher, and I did like the fact that his tests were application-based and challenging. However he doesn't cover all of the stuff that is on the test and what's worse, tells you that something specifically ISN'T on the test and then you have 50 probs. on it. There is no curve and only four grades overall.
READ YOUR TEXTBOOK. His tests make you want to gouge your eyes out, honestly. He flies through material, rarely reviews it, then makes us feel like crap when 70%of the class fails the test. Just know that you're going to have to study like it's your job. And don't miss class--you'll miss at least 4 pages of notes.
Class was very nerve wrecking; especially so because I wanted an A. Please study for the first test! Getting an A is possible but for that, you must study and pay full attention in class. I recorded the lectures which helped a lot! I did not get bored in the class. He makes jokes every now and then. Gives studying tips and cares about the class.
Dr. Flores would probably make a good professor for graduate students; however, not for General Biology class. His expectations are so that the class has an extensive biology background and has had an opportunity to apply learned concepts. Yet, it is not the case with this particular class. His exams are designed for graduate level students.
He is a good teacher. Students just need to listen to what he says and study better. He is just preparing you for what is going to come next.
Dr. Flores, is EXTREMELY intelligent with this subject. Therefore, he expects his students to know just as much as he does. Go to class EVERY day, take as many notes as possible, study EVERY night, and read every word of the book! This class is very difficult and in order to be successful, you have to be very dedicated to the class.
READ YOUR BOOK BEFORE LECTURE! Challenging. Review your notes, be sure to STUDY. His powerpoints are probably to worst part of the class because they have information you need but they distract you from the more important verbal notes you should be taking. A recorder wouldnt be a bad idea.
Interesting course. Impossible to do well if perfect notes are not taken. Grading is very subjective as tests are in essay form.
This professor will not make it easy on you, but you WILL LEARN FROM HIM. In addition to teaching you biology, he introduces a new, critical thinking approach that is useful in any class you take. Read the book before class and go to SI at least once a week and you will be fine.
Flores' class will prepare you for you major because it will make you study harder and smarter. I did well in his class because I read the book like it was the Bible. Know the chapters inside and out, because his test questions are application, you can't just memorize. Bio 2120 really isn't that hard, just go to class and study!
We love hydrothermal vents!!!! Tell us more!
I DID NOT PASS THIS CLASS WITH THE GRADE I WANTED BUT HE IS A VERY GOOD TEACHER. JUST READ AND STUDY STUDY STUDY. I was really close to passing...I guess i needed to study more
First off, if you're an immature freshman who isn't ready to study, kindly withdraw IMMEDIATELY. Biology is a DIFFICULT major and it all begins here. Dr. Flores is an incredibly hard teacher but I am so glad I had him and I have a lot of respect for him. I learned a lot in his class and feel confident that he prepared me for upper level biology.
I got an A in this course, want to know how? Take notes for the chapters before class. He posts chapter outlines on the website, USE THEM to do your outlines. Take detailed notes, if he gives examples, pay attention. Yes it's a hard class, but It will make you re-evaluate how badly you want a career in biology, you have to work for what you want.
Not a good lecturer
One of the best professors in this department. I would recommend this class to anyone and would take more classes with this professor if they were offered!
TRYING TO MESS UP PEOPLE CAREERS BEFORE IT EVEN STARTS. HE MAKES U WANT TO CHANGE UR MAJOR..i DISLIKE LIKE HIM SO MUCH..IF ONLY I COULD EXPRESS MY TRUE FEELING..
By reading the posts here I decided to not transfering from UCF to UNC. IDK if he is as bad as posters have said but if you have something in your head dnt risk your career just by tring to prove that you can handle a hard class because you might not get in the professional school than a person with an easy professor might get. Take classes doable
Don't rely on Dr. Flores to teach you antyhing! Come prepared to teach yourself the material. As for clarity, he does not clarify anything. There is basically no lecture provided to the students, class is just an open discussion. Attendance is not necessary, but I highly recommend that you read the book, utilize Raven Biology and a get a tutor.
Oh my gosh, you have to come to class and study!!!! I cannot believe someone chose to not transfer because of this silly website. Dr. Flores is a wonderful, helpful professor that is willing to take time out of his schedule to meet with you and discuss your progress in the course. It is meant to be difficult to weed out people. Read+Study=Success!
HOT HOT HOT
VERY ARROGANT!!! I hated this class. He lives off reading this website with negative thoughts. Just stuy study study and get a tutor!
Dr. Flores was by far the worst teacher I have ever had!He doesn't teach a thing and lets you guess at what is correct or incorrect. His lectures are more like him taunting people because they don't read so when someone yells out a wrong answer, he lets you go on and believe it is correct. TERRIBLE
Dr. Flores is by far, the worst professor I have EVER had! His lectures are more like open-ended discussions where when somebody is wrong, he just laughes and lets everybody guess at if the answer is correct or incorrect! What kind of professor does this type of thing! I loved Biology before!
Yes, Biology is hard you have to study a lot, we all know this. But this teacher is ridiculous. He asks questions and if someone gives a wrong answer he just puts it on the board as if it was right. It is so confusing. Dont look at the board because you could be learning the wrong answers, just read you book and know EVERY detail in it.
awful professor...he doesnt like anyone but the front row people. He doesnt teach anything really inclass just asks you questions. His test a ridiculous and you never know whats on it!
Nice guy and the compliments stop there. Probably the worst proffessor i have had. He would put wrong answers on the board and leave them there. He did not teach, he came in asked the class to teach for him. Avoid if at all possible!
Grow up, this isn't high school. Read, come to class, and you'll pass. I recommend you attend his e3 sessions if you need more clarification on what was discussed. And yes, when someone provides him with wrong information, he writes it on the board as notes. It is your responsibility to know it is so.
this is a really hard class. he expects you to already have an understanding of all the material before you even begin the semester and then he goes in detail throughout lectures. GO TO CLASS! he will sometimes, not often but sometimes, do extra credit questions worth 5 points on exams, which you'll probably need.
Read the book until you think you're going to have a mental breakdown, take a three hour nap and then read it some more. An A is not impossible :D
Class was awful....when class first started he didnt teach a thing!!!! He just talking about random stuff. I read the textbook and came up with wonderful notes...still failed...hes not helpful either...dont bother asking a question....he will be no help what so ever...ill be repeating the course...and the sad thing about it is that hes tha only pro

Eat, sleep, read, and go to class...rinse and repeat.
Read alot, read the same thing multiple times,go to lecture, use the Aris website, go to e3, go to S.I, watch youtube and you'll be fine. This is the first proving grounds for people who think they can be scientists/doctors. He's a really cool guy outside class. Met with him multiple times. I got an A but it took effort. NO HALFASSING This class.
Dr. Flores' class is hard (being a bio major is hard throughout the four years), meaning you have to come to class, read the book until you know the material backwards and forwards. I recommend forming small study groups and help explain the material to each other, this helped me a lot. I had his class Fall 2008 and I'm still a biology major.
He is a good professor. I was scared prior to his class. But if you show that you are serious and want to pass, he will help. Office hours, SI's and E-3 are mandatory if you want to succeed. He is not easy but it is possible to do well. I had a F at first but ended up with a mid C in the class, so it can be done. I promis
This professor is EXTREMELY hard! His powerpoint is directly out of the book, but his test are a different story. I studied my butt off and still did poor in the class. If possible take it with someone else.
He's a funny, and interesting teacher. But for some reason has a god complex. I guess it's because he's been in a submarine (which he tells you about several times during class). In addition, he will claim that he is there to help you; but it's a ploy. His job is to prevent you from making it in biology... seriously.
HORRIBLE! Don't let anybody lie to you, i thought hey ima a good student and i work hard but i STILL FAILED! I read the text book, had two tutors, met wit him PLENTY of times, attended SI & E3 and still FAILED!!!! DO NOT!!! SERIOusLY NEEDS TO gEt OFF HI S HIGH HORSE
Ok Here is the deal. Come to class, go to E3, SI, which are basically other 1 hour class in themselves. If you have a life, just stop it right now, because you will have to devote a substantial amount of time deciphering the lectures, relearning and teaching yourself. Not everyone can teach, but anyone can make a tricky Exam.
Everyone thinks BIO is so hard, even Flores. He even gives pep talks after each exam, like we need him to tell us how to study. I got an A, didn't go to a single SI or E3, never met for office hrs - the only thing Flores is good for is for giving the exam. For everyone complaining it's too hard, why don't you read the book? Seriously
He is not the nicest person in the world and is not the most helpful, but if you read the book and attend lecture everyday you will make a good grade. I know alot of people may not want to do this but reading and taking additional notes along with the notes in class will help you out so much. I made a good grade in there and i didn't need SI or E3.
Very full of himself, but otherwise a nice guy. I took this class my first semester at college and worked my butt off, and I failed with a 78 average. If you work HARDER, you'll do fine.
Dr. Flores has acquired a reputation of being "a jerk" and "excessively difficult". This is not the case. I now realize that he is one of the few professors who leads you to APPLY the information via critical thinking. You WILL work for an A; but before you throw rocks at Dr. Flores, you might want to consider the efficacy of your study habits...
Dr. Flores is hard. But he knows what he is talking about. If you read and pay attention in class and make connections, you wont be THAT bad off. but it is true, you might have to be a genius to make an A.
I'm sure he is a great person outside of class, but as a professor, I do not like him. Tests are very tricky but thankfully he will drop questions that a majority of the class missed (atleast for my class). You HAVE to study and read the book!
Horrible
Horrible
It'd be wise to take chemistry before taking this class. He expects students to know what he's talking about and that it's a shame if you don't. Nice guy, just a bad professor. Exams are ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous. Understand the book & be able to think outside the box. & Don't let him discourage you from continuing in biology.
"I'm going to teach you how to teach yourself". Give me a break! Your being paid to teach us, so maybe give us at least some clue as to what we're supposed to know and stop playing mind games!
Dr.Flores' class is difficult to say the least, but making a good grade isn't impossible.Read the textbook until you know everything forwards, backwards, and sideways.Go to SI,and take your own notes outside of class and you should be fine.
It's not impossible to make an A in his class. He's an awesome professor and really tries to make resources available to you. But his tests are hard. Don't be an idiot. Read the book and you'll be fine. He looks for specific concepts not memorization. Attend class. If you do well, you'll come to like him a lot.
Not an impossible class but definitely difficult. He favors everyone who sits in the front even if they say the wrong thing. You got to read the book and know the material like the back of your hand to be able to follow his lectures. He definitely has a God complex and can be very arrogant. If you don't want to teach yourself don't take this class
He was the absolute worst. "I'm teach you to teach yourself." Any professor that uses that line apparently has no intentions of actually teaching anything worthwhile. An absolute no-no. If you can avoid it, avoid it.
the worst teacher you could get. the problem is that he is the only one available for 2120, at least when i took it. i always thought i did good on the tests but when i got the grade back it was in the mid 70s range. i emailed him to see my test but he never replied. he sucks
He's a very nice person, just an awful lecturer. He weeds out the "weak" with his so called teaching method and tricky tests. Suck it up & push through. When you are through with Flores and organic chem, your biology life will be a happier place. multiple choice & free response exams.
You need to have a lot of prior knowledge in biology before taking this class, it is HARD. Flores will help you, and he sets you up with lots of study sessions. His lectures are not always relevant, and attendance is not mandatory, but you should still go. No homework, only a few tests. Read the book and know the material, and you might just pass.
he is a horrible teacher, and i think he writes some of the comments on here about himself, cause every once in a while u read something like "he makes you apply ur knowledge via critical thinking" and he is not what he is being described as. u know that no student wrote that. avoid him at all costs.

Dr. Flores is a tough but good professor. Know your stuff before coming into his class. You have to read the book and go to the study sessions, but also he gives a lot of his examples on the test, from class lectures. Overall, suck it up and get through it.
AVOID HIM!!! If possible do everything in your power to avoid him, however let me warn you first before u decide to go to a different school to take the 1st bio, DO NOT. watch out though some schools(med/pharm/dental) do not accept credits from "specific" schools, so might as well take him an pray u pass
Impossible! I was consumed by this class this semester, devoting more time than all my other classes combined, only to come out with a "C". I attended most of the out of class sessions, which were very time consuming, and it didn't improve my grade. He is very unclear about what you need to know and teaching his not his priority. Avoid if possible
Stop hating on him. Easy class if just attend the lectures, take notes and PAY ATTENTION. I barely read the book and still made an A (tests are based on lectures so do attend class). He's extremely helpful outside of class and he notices if you try IN class (sit in the front, take notes and participate). Stop the winning and do some work people.
Dr. Flores is a demanding but overall great professor. I think most people come into his class (most straight from high school) and expect him to hold their hands and walk them through every bit of material. I believe he is just preparing students for the world of upper-level classes. Attend lectures and try to learn, you will be fine!
Dr. Flores isn't the easiest teacher, but there is a reason he teaches Biology for MAJORS.! If you don't have the dedication to read every word in the book, attend ALL his classes, and try to go to additional learning sessions(SI, E3, tutoring),then you probably won't do well in his class. He will help you all he can, but you have to help yourself.
Given that this class is a prerequisite for any health professional program I am glad Dr. Flores creates a demanding class. I would not want someone could not pass the first BIO class they ever took give me medical advice. Read the book, attend class, and ask questions. Pretty simple formula to achieve an A...AND actually learn!!
Taking this course two years ago,it was my first semester back in school after a 12 year gap. While it was difficult, I enjoyed the subject matter;but then again I read science articles for fun and love. For his part, I must say Dr. Flores will have you LEARN the Central Dogma in a creative manner. On his good days AN AMAZING PROF. BAD DAYS-oh boy!
I honestly cannot even tell if Dr. Flores is being serious with the way he 'teaches' class. It's important to go because he will occasionally drop slight hints about what you even be studying, but there has not been a single lecture all semester. He just writes a question on the board and you talk to classmates for the rest of the period.
Go to the lectures, even if they don't seem worthwhile. He doesn't ever tell you directly what chapters to read, so this is the only way you'll have any idea of where you're at. I personally hate his style of teaching, I learn nothing from spending an hour and a half chatting with my classmates. Read the book verbatim.
Dr. Flores is one of those free spirited teaching types. One day he may feel like lecturing the next class he might give you a scenario to complete amongst class mates. Honestly unless you are good at remembering all you read in the text the exams will be difficult because they are based on details that he usually doesnt touch on in class.
Honestly, Dr. Flores is the type of teacher who will make you work for your grade, which is honestly what we need. Some can handle it, while others cannot. I will proudly admit that the class wasn't for me, but it all comes down to how one learns and how much effort your willing to put into the class. Biology Major= No social life. Bottom line.
Not a bad guy. You will actually learn something from this class. It helps a great deal if you have a great interest in biology. Read the text book and everything he puts on moodle.
This class may as well have it's own fatality rate with the amount of students dropping. Not everyone really WANTS to learn biology and Flores will make you weed yourself out if you're one of them. This class, and major, is for Biology nerds and if you can't stand reading about Biology everyday, then you need to find something eaiser.
Flores is a great teacher who in fact does not teach. He gives no real structure to the course. All of the exam questions are very tricky and extremely specific. He is a nice guy who just shouldn't be teaching an intro course. He does not want to help you unless you already know what you're talking about.
Most difficult class that I've ever taken. There's no structure to the class, and you're on your own for learning. Forget asking questions because he will just return them with "I don't know, what do YOU think?" Tests VERY difficult. I studied my life away and barely passed. Like him as a person, but not as a professor!
He does not answer any questions(literally). He does not state exam topics or give lectures on exam material. This is why it is near impossible to get a B. Ask anyone who has had him, studying 15 hours a week gets you nowhere. He says he would like you to "learn on your own". Which sounds good in theory, and I did learn A LOT but still got a D.
Dr. Flores is a hard but great teacher. His method isn't conventional, but it is effective if you work hard. He really exhorts you to study constantly, and knows the subject he teaches very well. The class itself isn't easy, because there's a lot of material to cover and it's complicated. With his class you can define if bio is what you truly want.
Flores is HARD, no ifs ands or buts on that. He IS there for support though if you make an effort. Many of the comments about him are true, but I absolutely believe that he taught me to get off my butt and learn stuff. External help is essential! Not what I expect from a class I'm paying for instruction in, but completely priceless in real life.
I liked Flores a lot. It is true he will not teach you in class, but if you reach out to him oustide of class and show that you are serious about learning he will be very helpful. I've been told this is the 'weeed out' class. I believe it. Read and go to study sessions and you will be fine.
Dr. Flores does not lecture. Bottom line. Class time is spent mostly on group assignments and discussions of biological concepts so if you haven't kept up with the readings you will be completely lost. He is very helpful on a one-on-one basis--will discuss specific questions with you. Exams are tough but if you study your rear off, you'll do OK.
Amazing teacher because makes you think and learn for yourself. I spent more time on this class than all of my others combined but this is necessary if you are serious about biology. If you can handle it and work hard, you will learn an incredible amount. Has no patience for morons or lazy people looking for an easy grade. Class was never boring.
Dr Flores is different in that he does not teach you. He only guides you... barely. READ THE BOOK. He will not lecture. This class will destroy you if you are not committed. Studying out of class is a must. If you can handle it, then go for it. Otherwise.. rethink your major.
Flores is tough. You get a syllabus on day one that lists all the readings for the whole semester--then you're on your own. Class is for discussing concepts that he assumes you have read about and are familiar with. If you fall behind, you're done. He is *amazing* one-on-one though so ask questions! It's not impossible, I paced myself and got an A.
Very Hard. I ended up changing majors after this class, but I feel like if biology is what you want to do then focus and stay on top of the readings and STUDY hard. You should make it...hopefully.
Awesome professor. He has a lot of knowledge about "science" and is willing to share his thoughts. The class was a LBST course so there was not much required from him. However, there were a few (5) media article assignments that needed to be done throughout the semester. DO your work and you'll get an A.
Dr. Flores is very passionate about the field. He is all about application of the material. You need to be self motivated enough to learn the objectives, he will not spoon feed you.
I never rated Dr. Flores when I had him, but I had him for both 2120 and 2130 lab. He class is very difficult because you are forced to teach yourself-which will help you in EVERY proceeding class. He is a very funny guy, but can come off negatively at times. He's very nice though, and I really enjoyed him in 2130 lab!! work hard- THIS IS YOUR MAJOR
Flores is a very nice teacher. He is usually easy going-make sure he has had his coffee. He does not necessarily teach though... he makes you teach yourself. If you have ANY trouble, schedule a meeting with him. He helped me with any difficulty I was having in class as well as help me with issues outside of school that affected my schoolwork.
This class is not easy by any means. That being said; this class can become easy. Reading the required material is mandatory! It can make a difference in your grade. Also attending class and paying attention is a must. He is not straight forward which is frustrating, but I actually enjoyed the class because I had to teach myself.
If you aren't serious about school and Biology, DON'T take this class. I don't claim to be the smartest person but I am a hard worker and that enabled me to get and A. Professor Flores often comes off as condescending because of his intelligence but he is actually quite nice. READ the chapters and work your hardest and you will do fine!
He does lecture- but it isn't book guided. He tries to give you real life examples. excellent professor.
He doesnt explain anything that is going to be on the test. In class he does not cover material in the text but rather real life examples.
Like everyone else stated, he is VERY Hard... The only way you will pass this class is to change your approach to studying...read then write the steps, then read again... I would not recommend taking... I got a B in this class.
He is a very fair teacher. His teaching is a little different than most professors. He doesn't spoon feed you so you really have to work hard, go to class, and read the book to get an A in his class.
Gives you something to talk about with your table and then walks around. I barely went to class because I learned nothing. Once I tried to ask which chapters I should study for the test and he actually told me "I am not going to tell you exactly what is on the test." Not what I was asking for... but thanks...
Never take Flores. Ever. Just the absolute worst professor. Class is useless, the syllabus is misleading, and he as a professor is of zero help.
Dr Flores does not teach in the classical manner, but he will teach to you how to learn and study on your own. If you are premed, these skills are essential to learn. No one is going to spoon feed you or hold your had in medical school. If you are lazy and just looking for an easy A, keep looking for another class and some other professor.
Employs "desirable difficulty" in class, so you have to be paying attention and participating to do well. He'll call you out if you don't contribute. That said, he is engaging and doesn't really give homework for LSC101. If he sends an email telling you to read something, you can bet he'll test you on it next class.
Best teacher Ive had at NC State, however I will say he doesnt use powerpoints so if you skip class you miss what he says.
He cried saying goodbye to our class, thats how much he loves his students. You may have a hard time with non cookie cutter lecture styles, but I honestly could not recommend a teacher higher. TAKE HIS CLASS!!
LSC101 with Dr. Flores was very easy. I got a 100% on every assignment except for 2, and ended with an A in the class. Overall super easy and the workload is about 1 assignment a week, and a bit of reading (mainly in the beginning of the semester). If you have a choice between Dr. Flores and other LSC101 professors, take Dr. Flores.
