He has extremely confusing slides, he does not make anything clear in lecture. He often goes off topic. He is a nice guy, but definitely my worst professor this semester. Would not advise for such a difficult course.
I had Jason last semester for BIO 105 and he was new here so at the start it was a little rough but once he settled in things got so much better. His exams are fair and the study guides/reviews are so helpful!!!!! He's really also helpful/approachable outside of class if you have any questions or are struggling.
I couldn't be more grateful I decided to take Ecology with Dr. Freund. Other than that I wish I knew he is obsessed with fish before I enrolled, he is a funny and cool guy who teaches the class well. He gives many opportunities to raise your grade to make up for a bad exam or two, so if you take advantage of those I believe that you will do fine.
Dr. Freund is very chill. Hes always willing to meet if you need help, learns your name after just one time of hearing it, and grades things super fast. Ive heard some horror stories of bad Bio105 professors so Im glad, I had Dr. Freund.
I did not enjoy this bio class but I wouldn't necessarily say that is his fault. He grades things super efficiently. Class tends to be a bit dry but you can tell he genuinely loves biology and cares about his class/ students which is always nice
His lectures are fast and unspecific, and skips slides that end up being on the exam. He's a good guy, but exams are extremely difficult and take multiple hours and multiple days to even get a C. The lab is more helpful than lecture.
Assumes you already know information before taking the class so he skims a lot. The tests are nothing like the notes and if you don't understand 100% of the material, you're not going to do even a C. Studied for over a week and went to MLC and watched Khan academy and still struggled. the majority of the information I knew I learned from others.
Jason is not a good teacher at all. I went in for help and he said you should know this already. In class he assumes you know what hes talking about, but you dont. I studied for all of his exams and even got extra help, but I still failed the exams. I DO NOT recommend him.
worst teacher/professor I have ever had. I've never walked in to take a test confidently and walked out feeling I never learned any of the information. I am a straight A student yet I am failing his class? My only hope for passing is lab which he doesn't even teach. Going to another bio class with another professor to help. I have to RETAKE CLASS
if you have a choice, do not take Freund! I'm not very good at bio and his lectures do not help very much, and very hard to stay focused and interested. Usually, you have an online quiz every week, 5 tests, and 2 group projects. Tests are hard and you will not pass if you do not study. Kind of unclear what he expects of you on exams.
Very lecture heavy and reads off the slides verbatim. Assumes that all his students already know the topics so he doesn't go into any details. When you do go in for office hours, he's condescending when you ask questions. Prepare to learn all the material on your own. 10/10 would avoid at all costs having him for BIO 105.
I would not recommend him. He's a good person but he assumes you know almost everything. A common statement you'll hear is "you've seen this before right?" He has students explain topics and then moves on, so some topics you learn through students. Skims over his slides. Lectures are dry, easy to get distracted.
He loves biology but not the best teacher. He goes through slides super fast and skims over most things. He also skips slides and says "we will talk about this more later" all the time but rarely does. He assumes you know the information from past classes and doesn't go over them because of this. The lab lectures are where I learned everything.
Jason is very nice and funny in lectures. His lectures span the entire class period and he tends to go through the slides rather quick. Make sure to ask questions.
I think this class is a tough one to teach. I don't think that this rating is too accurate. Freund is clearly really passionate about biology (fish in particular) and is really funny. The class covers a lot of material, so you are going to have to study. But if you put the time in, you will be fine.
He gives points for in class exercises on almost every day that you don't have to read a small paper and respond to the questions that he poses to class which makes for a lot of busy work. Also have 5 units on SimBio app throughout the semester that take about 2-3 hours a piece. Exams are relatively easy however. A pretty easy A if you go to class.
Jason provided the materials and resources for the exams like extra practice sheets and a slideshow with the most important information. He didn't do a lot outside of class, but if you reached out to him he would answer any questions. The lectures weren't boring or horrible, but they weren't amazing. Easy if you study and put in the work. GO2TUTOR!
Dr. Freund is a solid choice for an ecology professor. Yes, he does mention fish every once in a while (counted 13 lectures in a row was his best streak of mentioning fish), BUT I will say that I enjoyed that he was trying to make lecture entertaining. 4 exams, and online quizzes every once in a while. SimuText is another item you have to buy.
Jason rarely fully explains his slides. He tends to read them to you instead of fully explaining. He says, "as you should remember from your high school biology course..." and then he moves on without further explanation. I will not be taking another class taught by him as he is a poor teacher and struggles to elaborate on his own material.
Jason is a nice guy that seems to genuinely care about his students. He tries to make sure that everyone understands the material and is generally a helpful person.
Dr. Freud is a funny guy that does his best to keep his lectures interesting. I said yes on textbook use even though it isn't required. If you at least skim the chapter that is listed on the syllabus it makes the class pretty easy. If you do start to struggle, he is very understanding and easy to meet up with outside of class.
Dr. Freund is a really nice guy, but his teaching style is not the best. His lectures do not really relate to the exams, and he tends to go on about random things. One thing that I appreciated was he would tell us some things that were guaranteed to be short answer on the exams, which were a good 1/4 of the total points.
He was awful, avoid at all costs
He will give you peer-reviewed articles to ready weekly, and spend multiple days talking about them. I taught myself everything for the tests based on the typed-up learning objectives he puts on canvas and does not talk about in class. Tests are hard, multiple choice and short answer. Lectures are VERY boring, but there are in class assignments.
Four in class exams, one of which is given alongside the final exam. Freund is no doubt a nice guy, but the lecture doesnt prepare you well for the exams. You mostly have to self teach yourself the class from the notes online. Overall, Id avoid freund if you can.
This class consists of a ton of quizzes, and outside assignments. Although all the extra work pays off because it majorly helps your grade. His lectures do not prepare you well for the exams, but the exams are not that hard. There are also in class points just for showing up sometimes. I highly recommend him for Ecology!
No matter what professor you have, BIO 105 is a difficult class. Overall hes nice guy, but while taking his class I fell into the deppest depression possible. Lecture heavy, no extra credit, doesn't respond to emails, boring class, and hard exams even for heavy studiers like me. Save yourself, save your GPA, and don't have him be your proff.
AVOID AVOID AVOID! Do not take Freund. He doesnt explain ANYTHING and excepts you to understand everything no matter what. Hes AWFUL. His PowerPoints make no sense and he just reads the slides in class.
Expects you to know things from before this class. Talks smack about students to other students. Makes you feel dumb if you don't understand. Exams are very hard to study for; you feel like you don't have the right information because he expects you to know more than what he's taught you. Do not take if you are not good at BIO or care about it.
Freund lectures heavy&goes through the presentations super fast, but the presentations are online. Class Exams and Lab are heavily weighted for your final grade, but the comprehensive final exam lightly weighted. He also gives easy assignments&attendance to help you get a couple points back. In general this class is tough, but Freund is a good Prof.
For capstone, he was super chill. He didn't want to be there as much as students, so he made class super fast and was a very relaxed grader for the final presentation and paper. There was also extra credit offered based on how you did on a survey. We also finished class a month early, so that was really nice too.
I had Freund for Bio105 and thought the semester went fine. He definitely isn't the best professor but if you show up to class you can get points that help your grade. There are lots of little assignments to turn in that are graded by completion so make sure you do them. As long as you study for the exams you should be able to pass.
I think that a lot of people are harsher to Dr. Freund than they should be. He wasn't the best or my favorite professor, but I think he was fine. He assigns a lot of online quizzes and other homework that are helpful to bumping up your grade. His tests are more big picture, and he is pretty clear about what material is going to be on exams.
This professor was SO BAD that I came back here (after a whole year) to write a review. HORRIBLE lectures mixed with NIGHTMARE exams made for one of the worse biology classes I have taken. If Fruend is your only option, GOOD LUCK.
People are pretty harsh on their judgements of this guy, no clue why. Decent guy, tends to make jokes, set clear deadlines, and overall tries his best. I admit, the class is a bit harder than usual to get a good grade on, but its college. The 4 exams given are most of your grade. Give it your all, and you can get an A.
The lectures are incredibly boring and his presentations are useless. If you have a good prior knowledge of biology it will be easy. He wasn't the worst biology professor at lax for hybrid classes but he wasn't good.
Not terrible but be kind of taught Bio as if you already understood the topics he was teaching. He moves at a pretty fast pace too so following along with notes was difficult
Dr. Freund was alright. Super easy-going grader but class is so boring. Lectures are long and bounce all over the place and will probably only go over 10 of the 50 powerpoint slides. Exams are easy to good on but hard to do great on because he really just reads off the powerpoint slides and then talks about random stuff that isn't on the exams.
This prof is HORRIBLE! NEVER take a class w/ him. The averages on his tests are 45% and he refuses to curve or give free points, when the other bio professors will. He flies through lectures, and tests are nothing like the slides. He gives you a few assignments worth 2 points. He just says need to study better even when whole class is failing. GL!!
I wouldn't call Jason my favorite professor but he's decent and will work with you outside of class. He gives you exam wrappers to gain points back on exams and gives you multiple attempts on quizzes to pass. His lectures go fast and can get boring but overall he's a pretty good professor.
Jason is a nice guy but very hard to follow in class. He jumps all over the place and doesn't explain things on the students' levels. I had to teach myself mostly everything outside of class. He does give many assignments and will almost always give full credit on them even if you get them wrong because he understands how difficult the class is.
I put a lot of time into what I would say before leaving a review on professor Freund. He's a good guy but I wouldn't recommend him for an intro level bio class. I felt like he expected failure on exam 2 before we even took and it and he refused to do anything differently in terms of teaching to prepare us even though it had gone poorly in the past
Hes nice and tries to be very personable. Hes totally willing to help you out if you ask. The tests focus a lot on application. Quick to respond to emails. The lectures are boring. If you took AP Bio itll be a breeze. A lot of mini assignments that arent worth a ton of points, but they help to buffer test scores.
He's a really good professor and loves what he teaches. His tests aren't too bad, you just have to study and put the time in. He's a very nice and helpful man if you ask for help or go to his office hours. He also gives quite a few extra credit options whether it's exam points back or just for being in attendance. Make sure you go to class.
This class is extremely difficult and the instructor doesn't help. Expects you to have prior knowledge of this information. The teaching style isn't the best and the exams are not the same with the study guides that are given. Wouldn't recommend as an instructor. He's a nice person just not my style of teaching.
Doesn't explain anything clearly, often assumes you already know everything. Lecture is long and boring, goes off of slides that are not helpful. He does nothing to prepare you for the exams...lots of multiple choice as well.
Jason is a bit of an oddball but he's alright. Bio 105 is going to be difficult with anyone as you learn about a lot of different topics in the class. Exams are a bit tricky so studying is needed for those but he does provide review guides. He also offers extra credit for each exam all you have to do is fill out a reflection sheet for the 3 points.
Jason lectures a lot. He does give some extra points for in class assignments if you attend, though. I find that his teaching methods are generally ineffective- the powerpoint slides only really contain diagrams so if you miss class you are out of luck on trying to understand the slides. I have almost no retention of anything I learned.
Bio105 is a hard class for anyone who is taking it as a GenEd. However, compared to other bio professors he is caring and provides tons of opportunities to get your grade up and earn extra points on the test. To earn a good grade focus on learning the objectives and complete all the easy point assignments he gives! Loved his class.
BIO 105 is a difficult class and while his lectures can bare on Jason really cares about the student and is always willing to help during office hours. Class is graded on few things but he gives chances to earn many points back that other teachers don't! Was very funny and would take again in a second!
Freund was very easy to talk to and cared about his students. However he lectures like we have previous knowledge of the topics and goes fast. But he has lots of office hours and is super understanding. The tests are on the harder side of tests but you can get 3 points after each test. Attendance is not mandatory but if you miss it you're screwed.
Professor Freund is by far one of my favorites! Taking bio 105 as a freshmen for a gen ed is difficult, but he wanted us to do well! His test can be tough if you don't actually try to study. He always gives 3 points of extra credit back if you simply go over your test to see what you did wrong! He also post review guides which is soooo nice.
Professor Freund obviously was passionate about what he taught, and the lectures were interesting and easy to understand. Very minimal amount of homework, and tests weren't very difficult. Offered extra credit on tests afterwards. If you took AP Bio, this class will be incredibly easy, as it pretty much teaches the exact same material
Dr.Freund was very friendly, very knowledgeable, gave points back on tests if attended office hours, and offered extended and more frequent office hours as the semester went on. Compared to what my friends profs were like, I would highly recommend Jason as he is not only very fun and silly, but he also tells you what the short answer q's for tests.
Jason really cares about you as a student and you will get out of it what you put into it. Group projects were a pain but he doesn't have bad partners and won't break your grade. He gives practice exams to study with and if you use them then the exams aren't to bad.
He thinks everyone understands something right after he teaches it
I had him for Bio 203 lab. He gave us a lot of work to do for each lab that took up the whole 3 hours. He makes you feel dumb sometimes when you don't know what to do or get something wrong when asking a question. The practicals weren't bad but definitely practice the microscope info. He was alright.
BIO105 is difficult regardless of professor, but Jason makes things make sense. He puts emphasis on the bigger picture and how everything connects - something that was extremely useful. He also allows you to get 3 points back on every exam as long as you see him at Office Hours. He makes a difficult class a bit more manageable.
Dudes a nice guy but the class is just hard. All BIO105 classes are hard and it doesn't matter really what professor you take. 4 Exams throughout the year and Lab has you right a paper for the class. It's a whole lot of lecture and then you just have to throw that information back on the tests. Gives a lot of resources though to help study + EC.
BIO 105 is a hard class. Jason did a great job explaining important info in lecture. Basically told us what the short answer questions on each exam. 3 unit exams and 1 final unit exam w/ comprehensive part. Gives 3 points back on every exam for going to office hours. Has many extra credit opportunities. Wants students to know material and succeed.
Hard class in general. Does expect you to have previous knowledge. Offers extra credit for every exam by simply going to his office hours and looking at what you got wrong on the test. Basically tells you what the short answer questions are going to be before the exam. Nice person in general.
Dr. Freund is an overall good professor, he has a lot of office hours available to go over the lab notebook or the major paper. He also hints at what will be on the lab exams. Study as if the lab exams are like lecture exams and you will do fine.
I had Professor Freund for BIO100. You are expected to learn the material before coming to class, and the new material is discussed in groups within the class period. He is easily accessable and all in-class work is graded. Participation matters, but the in-class work makes up a good portion of your final grade. Show up to class and you'll be fine.
Dr. Freund is a good professor. Quizzes are online, and you can take it as many times as you want in order to get a higher grade. The Bio 105 material is just difficult. You have to study to succeed. If you go over your exam with him during office hours he gives some points back. Some in class assignments are done as well.
Jason is the best! Really caring professor and is always available to help outside of lab time. Prepares the class well before giving lab practicals.
moved too quick and he thought everyone knew as much about bio as him
Seems like he didn't care about his students. Had favorites in the class and it made it hard to learn becuase the same people would answer. Expected you to know everything before you got to class and didn't do anything to help the kids thaat were struggling except say study harder.
His class takes a lot of studying to do well on the exams, but he provides a lot of practice exams and other resources to help prepare. His final was really easy and the textbook is only read for extra help. He expects his students to have prior knowledge so at times it gets difficult to catch on. Overall his class was good though.
just do not take him
just not the best human being and treats students like they should know every concept after one lesson
He is a nice guy and is very good at explaining what we are learning. He gives you 4 free passes to miss class throughout the semester. You will never be let out of class early though. He can be repetitive but overall a good teacher and I would totally take him.
Moved very quickly in lecture, but provides good study materials. You need to study in order to pass the exams, he just plows through powerpoint after powerpoint expecting us to keep up. He had a "you either get it or you don't" mentality.
I was shocked to see Dr. Freund had such a low rating. He isn't the best professor/teacher I've ever had, but he was alright. It's very lecture heavy but he posts the slides so you can get notes, there were a couple of group projects but they were doable. He moves quicky through the material, but is very willing to meet outside of class.
This is a great class with a great professor. There are only 3 exams and they aren't difficult as long as you do the work and pay attention. There is a lot of busy work that you don't have to do but it helps if you do. There is also a couple of easy projects that are grade boosters. You're placed into groups of four and in class you do worksheets.
Assumed you knew material he never taught. Unorganized lectures, jumped back and forth between topics which made him sometimes hard to follow. Sent lots of email reminders about office hours which was helpful. After unit exams you could go to his office hours to complete an exam wrapper and earn 3 points back.
BIO 105 is pretty difficult but Dr. Freund was pretty good. He basically told you what was going to be the short answer questions for exams. Gives a lot of practice exams and questions, just need to study a lot.
Jason clearly does not care about anyone besides his "limno folks". The guy clearly either rushes his job when grading essays or is illiterate. Exams are fine for the most part. Hasn't really taught the class in years. Condescending, insulting, I wouldn't take him unless you are into smart remarks from a know it all.
The one great thing about this professor is that he offered some basically free exam points after each exam. BIO 105 was just a tough class any way you slice it. I had friends who had worse professors for the class and better ones. I'd say he's pretty middle of the road. Always talks about fishing.
I was surprised to see such low ratings for Dr. Freund! His lectures could get lengthy and in-depth, but his exams focused on main ideas and I thought they were fair. He provided lots of office hours and gave extra points back on his exams. He is enthusiastic about the content he teaches, and I would definitely take a class of his in the future!
If he does not like you, he will make it clear. When it comes to exams, he doesn't tell you really what to study at all. No study guide. All he says is to look over the learning objectives for each day of class - half of which isn't even on the exam. Online quizzes each week which are pretty easy if you pay attention. I wouldn't take him again.
He is a very nice professor who clearly lays out what must be done to succeed in the class. Tests aren't weighted too heavy and there are a few EASY projects that go in as a test grade. He gets it's a bio 100 class so as long as you get between 70-80% on tests you should have a very good grade.
Professor Freund is a great professor that wants students to learn the basics of biology. He does not make the class harder than it needs to be. I will say lectures can get a little boring, but you always know what he expects of you.
He is a nice guy, but I don't love his teaching. Exams are low-key harder than anything we go into in class. You do need to study for this class. Gives you extra credit if you make a study guide, but I would rather have him give us one so I actually know what to study. We barely even take notes, we just do worksheets and it isn't my favorite..
He is a nice professor; however, the subject just isn't interesting, especially for non-biology majors. You are supposed to go through the modules outside of class. I never did, though, and I still ended up doing fine on exams. He has a service citizen project and then a research project, and 3 exams throughout the semester. Lots of group work
Professor Freund truly cares about his students, and is very personable once you get to know him! Bio 203 isn't the most interesting class and there is a lot of information to remember, but Professor Freund is very straightforward regarding the info you need to know. He sometimes goes on tangents about a topic. But overall is great & passionate!
Dr. Freund was overall a good teach for bio 203. I think his labs were easy and laid back, but you do have to study hard for the exams.
He does not teach, but the class is so easy. Some exams are harder than others, so just make sure you study and do the coursework. An A is easy to get in this class.
Jason wasn't too bad but talks the entire class. I didn't mind going to his class but it was a long period that was full of notes the whole time. Some days we would take 3-4 pages of notes. Though he is very helpful outside of class one-on-one. I've heard other professors are better but overall not bad.
Very average teacher
Dr. Freund is a chiller.
This was a veryyyy easy class with him. He's funny without trying to be and gets the content across. He always hints at exam questions in class, so as long as you're paying attention, you should be able to pass no problem.
Dr. Freund is a pretty chill guy, exams are pretty easy. Only complaint I have is he can be kind of condescending, and also will tell you something in person if you ask a question and then forget what her told you and take points off for the same thing. Group projects suck if you have a bad group
Had a lot of in class assignments which made attendance mandatory however were free points. Lectures can get boring but I'd say he does his best to keep it engaging. Lots of resources on canvas to review topics. Make sure to study and re read notes/ watch videos and you'll be fine. As long as the effort is there exams aren't that bad.
Dr. Freund is a great guy, but I think BIO105 is too easy a class for him to teach. He goes too into depth on some topics but not enough on others. He reads from slides 99% of lectures, but has in-person activities that count for points. I can tell he tries to make it enjoyable, but it's just not a fun class in general. Exams are decently hard.
I loved him, he loves conversating with students and making sure they fully understand the content in class. He would get a little annoyed if you asked him to repeat himself. I loved getting to know him over the semester. Lab it's self was difficult and there was a lot of homework, and the practical were difficult so you had to know your stuff
