So funny, so smart. Class is so fun. Even if you're reading stupid House of the Seven Gables, it's fun.
Totally funny and describes even the dryest content as to make it seem interesting and relevant.
Very fair & entertaining. Knows his stuff!
Awesome teacher! Very entertaining and beneficial to students. Allows students to explore their own thoughts and interpretations of class material.
Hilarious professor who engages great discussion and debate in class. Very helpful when it comes to writing papers. He brings food to class :)
He is a great guy very very funny but he doesnt critique papers very well. He'll give you a rough draft to do and doesnt even grade it. so when you turn in your final drafts you either have to go to the writing center or get other help to make sure it's cool. very good guy very smart and intelligen

Yes, it was a lot of reading, and writing. However, Pr. Gieger was a nice, funny and smart teacher. I would advise, if you are planning on taking one of his classes, to not overload yourself. Even with the loads of novels to read, he grades pretty easy. The class made me appreciate some of the classic movies.
There is a lot of reading, but he understands that sometimes life doesn't allow enough time to finish it all. If you need help he is always available and will help you with rough drafts if you go see him. If you take his class get to know him, go to offic
Professor Gieger is enthusiastic and engaging, and he makes the text come to live by helping the class to understand the social and political contexts it came from. You have to do some work, but he keeps it approachable and meaningful. Excellent work!
Teaches an engaging, fun, effective class. I took his course four years ago, and I frequently recall things from his class that help me in outher courses I am taking now. He is committed to giving students every opportunity to succeed, and he loves his work. You must take a Gieger class before you leave college.

Professor Gieger is a fantastic teacher who has a great sense of humor and who teaches with great passion and energy. It's hard not to get excited about a text when he's teaching it. He gives his students ample opportunity to discuss and express what they know and have learned in his class. He is one of the better teachers I've had at CSUS.
I had him for 197K, now in 191A, and next semester for 197I. Does that tell you something? He is a good teacher that helps the students out with problems. As long as you do the weekly responses and the essyas you can't go wrong. And, don't worry about your film projects as long as you try your best, you'll get a good grade.
Come on, people! Prof. Gieger deserves to be maked "hot" more than some of the other professors in the department... Oh, and he's a great teacher, too. Take him; you won't regret it.
Gieger is an exciting teacher. Wonderful lecture style. With little effort, he compels the students into active participation in the subject matter. If you don't understand Shakespeare now, I promise you that you will after taking a class with this professor.

Most of the time I feel that the value of a class relies on how effective the instrucor is. Gieger could lecture on just about anything and it would be a good class. He is just very effective - and kinda hot too.
I've taken his film classes before, and this semester wasn't any different. Profeesor Gieger is very helpful on responses papers and your essays. He even gives you trhe chance to redo your midterm essay to turn-in as your final paper. You get to watch great movies and learn all about film-making. He is great.
Wonderful professor. Engaging, inspiring, knowledgeable, approachable and honest. Not afraid to speak the unmentionables in class. HOWEVER, romance lit class was insipidly boring by the end of the semester -- got too relaxed and was a borderline waste of time. I am scrambling to take a different class with Gieger. He's great; the class sucked.
The one and only teacher I have had to far to make these veyr boring reading interesting to talk about. He would be sarcastic and funny all the time. Even though most of the class was him talking it was never boring. The quizzes were on the readings were not easy. Even if you did the readings it wasn't guarenteed that you got the questions right.
I love Gieger! This class has a lot of reading, but if you stay on top of it, you'll be fine. Would not recommend this class to non-majors, as it is pretty intensive. He is absolutely hilarious and made Early British Literature awesome.
I enjoyed taking Geiger’s classes due to his positive energy/attitude and student-centered instruction. I highly recommend him! I learned to manipulate the material and study smart. I am glad to have taken his classes because other than learning English Literature I gained an insight on strategies I can use in my own teaching career.
Funny and Intersting teacher. He makes the material interesting and fun. Explains stuff well. I really enjoyed his class. Very helpful. His class was a lot of fun to go to. He has a great personality and teaching style. You have to take one of his classes!
I've had Prof. Gieger several times, if that tells you anything. like all his classes, there are several novels to read with response papers to do for them. He has the standard midterm and final paper, which he gives you plenty of time to do with good instructions. He gives you plenty of oppurtunities to get a good grade. He is also a decent grader
Simply adorable!:) I still don?t like Nazis and Lena Riefenstahl, but Charlie Chaplin became my hero! This class was tons of fun! If you r not English major, take him for GE, you will like it for sure!!!
Gieger is amazing. He's engaging and funny he makes coming to class fun. Yes there is a lot of reading (12 books in one semster), but most of the reading was quick(I was taking Detective Fiction). I highly recommend taking at least one class with him.
Professor Gieger is a very entertaining teacher. He does require a LOT of reading (18 books this semester for 191A) but it works well if you're an English major and used to reading in large quantities. He allows notes on his midterms, but you still have to study. If you study hard and do the work, you'll do well. Great prof!
Prof. Gieger is great! His classes (mostly discussion format) are thought-provoking and entertaining, and he's a very supportive/nice sort of professor. Take Romance Fiction from him if you have the opportunity. It's a ton of reading but sooo fun!
What else can I say? Great teacher. He truly cares about his students. He is funny, entertaining, intelligent and totally knowledgable of his subject matter. Lots of reading and novel responses in his classes but its worth the work & is made enjoyable & the class discussions help broaden your thinking. I highly recommend him-English major or not.
Easily my favorite teacher on campus, he loves when his students have opinions and he's so involved and excited about what he's teaching it makes everything he teaches interesting.
EVERY positive statement you have read about Gieger is TRUE!! he's is the most awesome professor i've ever had!he's VERY helpful, positive and smiles ALL the time!thanks to him i will never watch movies the same way again.i wish there were more professors like him who are passionate about their subjects and cares about their students
Professor Gieger makes film entertaining. He's a funny, light-hearted guy with a good knowledge of film. Very helpful and clear about assignments and due dates. Not a super heavy workload, but learned a TON. Highly recommended for English majors and non-English majors alike. PS: The Belton text was fantastic--very accessible and insightful.
He is SO fun! His lectures are always entertaining and you LEARN a great deal from him! Expectations are clear and he is faithful to the syllabus. Also very approachable. He's a very kind man, and he is also very knowledgable and passionate about his subjects that he teaches. This guy is awesome. He has A LOT of readings, but they are good!
I love this man. He is the best teacher I have ever had. He is clear on what he wants, and loves what he does. He is engaging and intelligent. I am very sad that I will be graduating soon.
Not liking Professor Gieger is kind of like kicking a puppy. You'd have to be a real jerk to manage it. Professor Gieger is enthusiastic, fun, knowledgeable, likeable, and follows the syllabus to a tee. He gives a lot of reading, but it's worth it because the subject matter is usually interesting. Summary: awesome teacher.
He is a great professor and makes you interested in the subject. There is a good amount of reading and papers but it is not too hard. Stay on top of the papers and come to class for the quizzes!
Gieger is a great professor. His class is interesting and he brings the subject matter to life with excellent insights and discussion. He also encourages students to think for themselves and includes production viewing alongside play reading. Expect that the discussion is more like a "Friday night" than a classroom sometimes, but he is excellent!
Excellent professor! Lots of fun films to watch, midterm exam was take home. Final was fair. Lots of opportunity to get a good grade. I really liked how he engaged students in his class. That's a tough job for a 6:30pm to 9:20pm class. Truly awesome professor!
I've taken Geiger 3 times. He's awesome, funny, and fair. I've taken him for two British play classes and a film class. It appears like he gives a lot of homework but it's really not. All his classes are structured exactly the same so it's great to know what to expect. As long as you put in an honest effort, you'll get a good grade.
My major is biochemistry and I could just sit in class and take no notes and when it came to the tests everything that was talked about during class was on the test! Wow!! I recommend though for some peeps who are bad at listening take notes doe. He is great and if you actually read and listen to the quirky jokes he tells you, you will love to read
I'm switching my major to English because of this professor, enough said.
LOVED this class! He's really passionate about what he teaches and he really seems to love his job. You don't really have to take notes in his class-just get the gist of what he's saying. There are two midterms and a final-they're relatively easy. There are also "pop" quizzes every week. Do the readings and you should be fine. He's awesome!
I loved this professor. He was hillarious and really intrested in the topic. His midterms and quizzes were easy just read and you will be fine. He cursed and was upfront about the upscure text which made it that more fun and intresting. Take him if possible!
Hilarious! Absolutely enjoyed this class! No busy work and is very straight forward with subject matter.
This prof is enthusiastic and helpful. Passionate about literature and funny to boot. 2 midterms, 1 final and reading quizzes occasionally. Good reading material for the engl major and ge student. Recommended.
Awesome Prof. Made Modern British Drama very interesting. Unfortunately the class is approx 3 hours long which is the only fault. Read 1-2 plays a week. Two timed writing papers, notes allowed. One project and a 6 pg paper. Very easy class. Really recommend for anyone who wants to get through their writing intensive. Fun and easy way of doing it.
Gieger is great! He is funny and engaging and makes the 3 hours go by pretty quickly. Even though this class is a Writing Intensive, it didn't feel like it because the assignments are spread out through the semester. It is a lot of reading, but the subject matter is interesting and it is also spread out evenly throughout the semester.
I hate British Lit, but Gieger made it so much fun. He's one of the most humorous & engaging professors I've had. He assigns lots of short readings & the writing was a decent amount. He's such a fair grader. I adore him!!
Gieger is quite possibly one of the few English professors at Sac State who can successfully make a 3-hour class fly by! He is funny, engaging, helpful and is obviously passionate about his subject! If you want to laugh in class, take Gieger! Just come to class, do the readings and submit good work.
He's funny and super knowledgeable about his chosen subject matter. However, he has a tendency to teach class one day a week, meaning the class is 3+ hours long.
Great Professor. Excellent lectures, fair work, not too hard and not too easy. Everyone seems to enjoy his classes. Highly recommend him!
This was the only class I greatly enjoyed this semester. It made second guess my biology major. It has been a very long time that I can say that I looked forward to going to a class. I will always keep it in my memory as I move on to my science classes not often filled with laughter. Do your best and he will help you if yuo are struggling.
Awesome teacher! Definitely interesting. He's funny and easy going. I will take him again if possible. You have to read a lot but his books are interesting.
Gieger is seriously hilarious, which makes his class easy to want to go to. Expect a ton of reading, we had 16 books in Romance Lit, and it looks like 190Q will be a similar load. He gives occasional reading quizzes to keep you on your toes. A couple of in-class essays, one at-home essay, and a creative project make up the bulk of the points.
I took Gieger's Romance Fiction class and although the material was not something I would normally have enjoyed (besides opening the semester with Pride and Prejudice) Gieger really made an attempt to make it interesting and overall I enjoyed the class.
Gieger is the only professor i know who can take a 3 hour night class and make those 3 hours fly by without you looking at the clock!!!!!!!! I try and take at least one class a semester from him as a class to look forward to but be warned he likes loading on the reading.
Gieger is great. Unlike Ridley who makes simple concepts complicated, Gieger makes difficult concepts easy. He does this through a genuine love of literature. LOTS OF READING (400 pgs/wk not uncommon in a Gieger class) but it is all interesting and serves to give students a comprehensive understanding of the genre. His enthusiasm is contagious.
This course consisted of 1 Senior paper (15+ pages) and a presentation. I would recommend any Dr. Gieger course to a student who can keep up with lots of reading.
Prof. Gieger is without a doubt my favorite professor at Sac State. I laugh every day in his class and it is always a joy. Grading is super straightforward and he lays everything out in the syllabus (with no changes). He does require a lot of reading, but goes over it thoroughly. I cannot reccomend him enough. You won't be disappointed!
Excellent teacher! Lectures are interesting and your opinions are valued, especially on the tests. Tests are matching with several short answer questions so you put down what you think. This is what University should be, thinking on our own and not conforming to the professors thoughts. Quizes are easy if you read the stories. Loved going to class!
Professor Gieger is hilarious and makes the readings come to life. I learned so much about American Literature that I ended reading additional readings from our authors assigned in class. There is a lot of reading but enjoyable. You'll be ready for the daily pop quizzes if you read the homework. I didn't miss one of his classes.
Best Prof in the English department. He is hilarious and very knowledgable of the topics. Pop quizzes frequently but are easy if you read the homework.
So glad I had Prof Gieger this semester. He is so hilarious! With each lecture there were thorough explanations of the readings and of what is expected on the tests. There are several quizzes but don't worry, if you read the homework they are easy. They actually pushed me to read knowing there was a possible pop quiz.
I HIGHLY recommend Gieger. His class changed my life. He takes texts that might not seem that interesting at first and makes them exciting. He is very thorough and extremely intelligent. His lectures are quite often hilarious, while some of the points he makes are very poignant and will stick with you, for a long time. Excellent, excellent teacher.
Best two hours of my time listening and laughing in Prof. Gieger's lectures. He explains the stories and poems with is own satires with gets everyone laughing thus makes us remember the texts even better on the tests. He sticks to the syllabus to the "T". He does give extra credit on each test. HIGHLY recommend him!
This semester with Prof. Gieger was GREAT! He is hilarious - made me laugh every class. Lectures are not boring. There are pop quizzes but hey, no worries, they are easy when you have read the homework.
BEST teacher! Professor Gieger is so funny and know his topics like the back of his hand. American Lit. isn't my cup of tea (Ha Ha) but I learned to appreciate it and learned so much from his insightful lectures.
This class wasn't the easiest class but it was a really good challenge. There is so much reading but they are interesting. Prof Gieger explains the readings with history which he pulls together with hilarious lectures. Always looked forward to this class.
If you are looking for a professor for this class - take Professor Gieger, you won't be disappointed. He will make you laugh, get you to read (because you know a pop quiz could be tomorrow) and be ready for conversation in class. He even relates history to our readings - how cool is that!
I learned a lot from Professor Gieger that I know I will use in future classes. He is entertaining during his lectures and he provides a mass amount of history to accompany each reading.
This class was GREAT! Professor Gieger is so funny and I learned things about American Lit. that I never thought I would learn. He is a cool professor. Take lots of notes and be sure to read all the homework before class, you won't regret it when you get the pop quiz.
Probably my favorite professor so far. He was very witty and charming and could make the whole lecture hall erupt with laughter. Gieger was very helpful and clear, and his syllabus was very detailed. Great teacher!
Gieger is an amazing lecturer. I thought I was going to dread this class with all the reading and history stuff but I actually liked it a lot. Showing up and taking notes is important. He also does pop quizes on the reading, so make sure you read before coming to class. The readings are easy as long as you manage your time.
Loved Professor Gieger!!! He only gave a Exam 1, Exam 2 (midterm) and Exam 3 (final); he was very involved with the stories and poems we had to read, and I found myself falling in love with the stories because of him. He gives you the exams weeks in advance to study and really cares about his students, but LOVES his pop quizzes!! Great professor!!!
Lectures are amazing. Very funny, entertaining and keeps your attention. This is a literature class so you have to read, what a surprise. He gives pop quizzes, but they're not that bad. not too clear on what he wants for the first test. But after that you'll learn. Is available to help. Overall a great professor
Randomly takes attendance. Clear syllabus (needed to survive). 3 textbooks (+2 non textbooks) also essential. About 12 pop quizes a semester plus 3 tests. If you do the readings, the tests are easy. Gives clear and helpful study guides. Not too many notes, no homework. He cracks jokes a lot. Very few opportunities for extra credit (we had 2).
Absolutely a great experience to take later Shakespeare plays with Prof Gieger. Lots of writing, lots of reading primary and secondary--and sometimes tertiary--texts. Be ready to think provocatively, and contribute provocatively.
I have taken two of Gieger's night classes and I highly recommend him. He is funny, enthusiastic and nice. Do not take if you won't commit to a lot of reading. A LOT. Pop quizzes throughout the semester and two tests are standard. I love Gieger and usually people who take him will take him over and over.
This professor is excellent in being thorough about Shakespeare's plays and how they relate to the era of the time. Be sure to read before coming to class. Pop quizzes are frequent but great to keep you on your toes. Best teacher on campus!
Incredibly interactive with students, and hilarious. Obviously has a great passion for what he is teaching. Only a few tests, but several randomized quizzes (which if you did the reading, you're fine on). By far my favorite professor so far.
Professor Gieger has been one of the best professors I have ever had during my time at Sacramento State. He is inspiring and knows his stuff; he engages during lecture and so obviously has a vast understanding of the texts. I am taking him for ENGL 145C (another Shakespeare course) just because he is amazing!
Gieger is my favorite teacher! This class was so much fun & I learned a lot. I have always loved Shakespeare & Gieger allowed me to learn more about it & dive deeper into the texts. Don't need to make a whole lot of notes, but I would recommend that you do, it makes writing the midterm & final essay a LOT easier. Also be prepared for pop quizzes.
Geiger is by far my favorite teacher at Sac State. I've learned more in his classes than I have with any other professor. He knows his materials and makes it exciting and fun for his students. I choose to take classes just because I knew he was teaching them. Couldn't ask for a better professor. Do the readings - there will be pop quizzes.
This is an amazing English professor. He is extremely knowledgeable and does a great job at teaching. As long as you keep up with the readings and attend every class you will not feel lost because he goes over everything thoroughly. Shakespeare was a new subject to me but with this teacher I feel almost like a Shakespeare expert in one semester!
Gieger is amazing. Knowledgeable, nice, funny, engaging, and the class itself isn't too hard. For an upper division ENGL course, you do surprisingly little writing, and what you do have to do is pretty easy. You will learn plenty, though.
Never taken a film class before but this was the best decision ever. Top 5 best professors at this school for sure. Highly recommend taking him. He is funny and has vast film knowledge. Book is only necessary for the film response quotes. 9 film responses, 1 project, about 10 pop quizzes (easy), 1 take home midterm (easy), 1 in class final (hard).
Rating is not a lie. Amazing Professor! Eng 191A was a super easy class and the information was entertaining. For our class he lectured first half, we had a 3 point quiz, (which counted as attendance) and then had a break before we watched the movies. I always left during break and watched the movie at home, he is cool with. 100% recommend him!!!!!
LOVE GIEGER! Loves his subject and he's such a funny guy his lectures are loud and you can't be bored or disengaged because he is on FIRE when he get's to speak. Moves quickly, very open to communication and missed classes. Stickler about grammar and sentence structure and ideas, so be careful however he gives WONDERFUL feedback on everything! <3
One of the best Professors I have ever taken.
His class lectures and materials were entertaining, and he has a humorous way of making the material fun. However, his exams were ridiculous. Based on a really hard matching section and essay
His Hitchcock class was fun and he was super knowledgeable! He cracked jokes and made the whole semester super fun. Lots of writing and reading, but not a super tough grader. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy an English class.
Gieger is one of the best English professors I've ever had, and as an English major with lots of favorite professors, that's pretty good. He loves teaching and you can tell. He loves when you respond to him in class and participate in discussions. I was actually excited to go to his class. I'm going to take more of his classes when I can.
I can't say enough good about Gieger. He was the best professor I had. I took several night classes w/ him and was never bored because he's engaging. He's brilliant, hilarious, kind, and hard-working. He has helped me so much outside of school. If you're an English major, take as many classes w/ him as possible. You won't regret. I learned a lot!
Professor Gieger is the best teacher I have ever had at Sac State. His lectures are always interesting and lively even at 9 oclock at night during his third night class in a row. He gives weekly quizzes and essay responses but makes it so that you only have to do 8/12 of the responses and he only grades your best 5/8 on the quizzes.
Dr. Gieger is a wonderful, straightforward professor. His lectures are incredibly engaging and he's a super funny guy. His classes are always very interesting and the workload is manageable. With that, his grading criteria is incredibly clear, which is nice, because you'll always know your grade even though he doesn't use canvas.
my favorite professor at sac state! so far i've taken shakespeare & renaissance drama with him. his lectures are enjoyable & hilarious. all assignments are straightforward & won't stress you out too much. the reading load is reasonable. gives good feedback on writing -- go visit him!
I took this course and Early Shakespeare in the spring with him and he is just fantastic. You gotta read quite a bit and personally, I found participation really helped. His lectures are fun and easy to follow. Hes super passionate about the subjects he teaches too which made the classes extra enjoyable!
An asynchronous class, so lectures were vital. They were broken up by topic so there were 3+ weekly, but were easy to go through. Lots of reading, but we had some optional assignments. The final and midterm were easy if you listen to lecture, so there were no surprises.
Professor Gieger has been one of my favorite professors this semester! Despite being a "3hr" night class, you only really need to stay for the discussions in the first 1-1.5hrs. The 2nd half of class is the optional weekly screening. 8 easy pop quizzes, & you will need the textbook to complete 5 of the 9 short response papers & the exams.
WOW, honestly just WOW. He is amazing and truly listens to his students. If you can take him multiple times do not hesitate! Very caring and respectful. His assignments are very clear, and you're graded by very few things. You only have quizzes and exams (English 40A). He made jokes and really engaged with everyone.
He always tries his best to make lectures interesting regardless of how inaccessible the text seems at first glance. Also very understanding on scheduling makeup exams and using office hours to discuss any questions. He provides extra credit points and a quiz grading system that makes you feel more comfortable with his class. My favorite teacher!
Gieger is one of, if not the best professor I have had at CSUS! He cares about his reading and writing so much, and it comes through in his teaching style. His energy allows the class to be very engaging, even when dealing with difficult subjects or more boring texts. This class has a LOT of reading however, though it is quite worth it!
Honestly one of the most passionate and informative professors I've ever had. His lectures are conversational in style, and as long as you were present and conscious during lecture, you'll be fine in exam. Great professor, you'll feel like you learned a lot from him, and you'll cry when your schedule doesn't let you take him the next semester.
He makes it easy for the students to understand Shakespeare. Although attendance is mandatory, he is very understanding if you let him know why you missed class. As long as you put in the effort and complete most of the assignments, you will do well in this class.
Professor Gieger is a darn good professor. He really knows his subject. His lectures do tend to be repetitive, but that helps with retaining information. The book he used isn't physically available in a lot of places, but can be found on Kindle. Great feedback from the papers. Dropped lowest grades. Really great guy and cares.
I loved taking Masterpieces of Cinema with Professor Gieger. He is super knowledgeable and passionate about films; I learned so much. His lectures are hilarious and engaging. I honestly wish I could take this class again!
British literature may not be the most exciting subject, but Professor Gieger makes it entertaining! This is my second time taking Gieger and he is so insightful and funny. Pay attention during the lectures; the content he covers will almost always be on the next exam. You do not have to write a single essay! Just a few exams and that's it!
He made this class very enjoyable and the connection of the texts interesting. Though you have to read a lot, it is not tough work and most of the poems/stories are interesting.
Really passionate about what he teaches. Usually he'll lecture, give a short pop quiz or break, then screen the film. You're able to leave for the day once it's break and watch the film on your own time. Short, one pagers to the week's film and two writing exams. As long as you show some understanding of the film's themes, you'll pass.
Teacher was amazing, quizzes and lectures were fun and he really just wants you to soak in the information. He is caring, and listens and will give you the time of day for whatever you need. Take this professor!
For ENGL 170D. Too much reading lol. I didn't read some, many at the end. Using online notes, copying to google docs, and printing/reviewing got me 100% still. Before Midterm/Final, re-read notes over and over; find some quotes, and put on notes, read those too. For essay, write incredibly small for 4 prompts. In test, COPY one to page. No stress.
Professor Gieger makes British literature engaging. Lectures are insightful and entertaining. Use Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook to prepare for exams - no surprises if you pay attention in class.
I don't usually leave reviews for professors, but this professor is one of the best I've taken so far, so I had to write one. I took his Masterpieces of Film class, mainly consisting of watching movies, writing essays, and a project. He makes his lectures very entertaining as we analyze parts of films. By far one of my favorite professors..
