Easy Class, mostly lecture outline notes and pop quizzes which are open note. He gives extra credit and tests are fairly easy if you study the notes and read the book as reference. His lecture might be a little boring but all in all it's an interesting class.
He's a very good teacher and is easy to understand. His slide shows are well organized and provide very organized notes. You really should read the book as you go, but i made A's on my exams by cramming the night before. He does have in class pop quizzes that are SUPER easy 100s (you get to use your notes), but you have to attend class to do them.
Gonzalez is great! He does not require attendance, but he does throw out about ten random quiz's throughout the semester. He's fun and talks about a lot of interesting topics in a pretty non-biased way. He'll help whenever you're in need. Tests are ok as long as you take the time to study your notes and the specified topics in the book he mentions.
Gonzales is an overall good teacher! Attendance not mandatory, but did give about 12 pop quizzes throughout the semester! They were VERY easy, and he allowed us to use our notes.. Only 2 tests, midterm and finals which are straight from notes & textbook readings. He uses powerepoints, but includes pictures that made it a little more interesting.
I really enjoyed this class. It's a lot of material, but it's not that hard if you do the reading and study the notes. Prof. knows his stuff and tries to make the boring topics as interesting as possible.
Lectures are pretty interesting overall, and attendance isnt mandatory. Some open notes pop quizzes throughout the semester, tests are easy. Hes a nice guy and is really easy to understand, I would take him again.
I didnt really like this class but it was interesting. Did about 8 one page essays during sem and 12 pop quiz. Powerpoints were effective and very useful for tests. I didnt read the book at all and got A-. Grading for essays and project was lenient. I would recommend this class if theres any intesrest at all in Anthropology and as an intro class.
Easy class but lectures are booooring but attendance is necessary because there is approx. 1 quiz a week
Prof. Gonzales was great! He is clear & passionate about his info..helpful when it comes to student comprehension & making up missed work...willing to give as much extra credit as needed. His class is low key..no tests.. random open note quizzes..with a lengthy midterm & final (not too bad!)..a few short writing assigns. & a pretty easy res. paper.
I LOVE Mr. Gonzales. I think he is SO interesting and has had a lot of expirience in the field, so he has tons of great stories and examples. He's also very friendly. The class is challenging because it is a challenging subject. There is a lot of information. But this class almost made me switch to an anthropology major.
He is a great professor! I didn't do the readings like he asked, and I still came out very well in his tests. Only one midterm and a final, one paper (fairly short) and a group project. That's all he grades. He is accidentally funny and really does a great job in teaching. It's a lecture format but not dry by any means! Good class. Good professor.
Great class, and great professor. Only complaint is that he is kinda rude, but its still worth it to take the class because you don't have to deal with him personally very often. You can make an A as long as you attend class and pay attention. clicker questions every day. Overall the class was worth it.
Easy class for the most part but by far one of the worst professors I've had at UGA. Not clear in his instructions most times. Makes attendance mmandatory for his incredibly boring lectures.
He is not a bad professor, although he seems a little unapproachable. His class is A LOT of work, so be prepared to study. Your grade really depends on your TA since they are responsible for 35% of your overall grade plus your short answers on the midterm and final. Gonzalez is always available for questions and you can tell he loves the subject.
Professor Gonzales is a great teacher. His lectures are very interesting and easy to pay attention to. His class is an easy A if you go to class and study for few hours before tests. Most of the questions on the test are common sense. In this class I learned a lot about anthropology while receiving an easy A. Highly recommend Gonzales.
I loved this class. Its not super boring like other lectures. He does take attendance at the start and end of class and it's worth points so you have to go. Also, there are pop quizzes, but they are always open note and really easy. There are only 2 tests, the midterm and final plus a paper but gives extra credit if needed.
Professor Gonzales really knows his stuff, especially when it relates to archaeology. He's got a bit of a lisp, so understanding him takes getting used to, but I definitely recommend his class.
Honestly, this class totally depends on your TA. They grade your papers. The midterm is not too bad and the final is slightly harder. This class is definitely time consuming. Gonzalez heavily relies on the textbook. Overall, Gonzalez is not terrible, but I would take another teacher if available.
This class is really not that hard. Attendance is mandatory, but lecture isn't that boring. Clicker quizzes every now and then but they're all open note. Only 2 tests (midterm and final), a couple group projects, and a paper at the end. Compared to other intro anthropology professors, I would definitely recommend Gonzalez.
Awesome teacher! Very clear about what he wants. Had two group projects that were extremely easy, individual project, midterm and final. If you're looking for an easy A take this class, plus it's very interesting. Lecture is mandatory, pop quiz at least once a week.
Great professor. 2 easy group essays (you only have to write maybe 2 paragraphs) and one individual research paper due at the end of the class (did it all the week before). He loves teaching this class and jokes about his wife's family a lot. Makes the class interesting. You won't regret taking his class.
Gonzalez is a cool guy. His class is laid back and he just goes through pp slides each day. Lots of busy work and essays to complete. But the work load is not difficult compared to hard classes. The group assignments can also be stressful
His class was really boring and my TA was extremely rude. The first day of class he talked about how he quickly responds to e-mails but did not respond to any of my e-mails all semester. They also said they would drop my lowest grade at the end of the semester but the grade is still in the grade book. But the material is clear if you study. hard.
Class was restructured from previous semesters making it harder with 3 tests, 1 of which is dropped if you take the final. Final was super easy all old tests questions. Clicker questions everyday and pop quizzes randomly, usually on fridays.2 easy group papers and a slightly harder individual research paper. TA grade everything. overall pretty easy
He was a really good teacher, and his lectures were very interesting - he tells a lot of funny jokes. But even if you study (like an entire weekend) you're still not prepared for the test. All the group discussions and dropbox assignments are very easy which helps your grade out because the tests are no joke.
Stadium style class. PowerPoint lectures. Breaks up lectures with personal stories. He's really into anthropology. Tough tests, a lot of material.
Class was fairly interesting, lots of material. Exempted the final with A average on tests. Lots of opportunities to help grade average, EC, papers, attendance, etc. Go to class and study a day before test, get an A
Great Professor. Not at all interested when I came in, but he made it a good class. Didn't read the book except to study for tests. Really nice guy!
Great professor, very knowledgeable and passionate about anthropology. Attendance is mandatory and he does give pop quiz's. Very funny! As long as you attend class and study you will not have a problem. There is a research project but he gives you many options on what to do and it is not bad.
Dr. Gonzalez is very enthusiastic in his lectures and I thought overall it was a pretty easy A. I would definitely recommend his class.
Jason, or should I say Jay Smooth is the best! His lectures are really entertaining because we has done a lot of field work in Archaeology. His power-points have tons of photos from his excursions and he knows so much about the subject matter. As long as you make sure you do your discussion guides and pay attention, you should be fine.
I've heard that Gonzalez changed his rubric recently, so my review might be why it's a poor one compared to the others. The tests were incredibly hard. You can study for days and still make a C. He also wasn't very clear with what he wanted with the research paper and told us things last minute. He's a funny guy, but this class is not an easy A.
Traditional. Has been using same tests for probably ten years, same powerpoints, same opinions. Is not very understanding to certain situations and kind of just says "sorry" when you need help. However, if you do what's assigned and listen a good grade is probable. His tests have some basic info but also stuff you feel like came out of nowhere.
Yes there is extra credit, however you have to ask in person for it. There are no written rules for it, and you are likely to do it wrong and not get the points. So a waste of time. Overall, I thought he was rude and a difficult professor.
Ask him about pie before the semester ends. It'll be worth it. He takes attendance every class so make sure you go! His tests are pretty difficult. He's not joking when he says you need to get the textbook! The group discussions are an easy grade booster if you don't do so well on tests. He gets funny as the semester goes on, I promise.
I took this class thinking it was going to be an easy A, but I was way wrong. Multiple choice of tests is extremely hard; there are so many tricky questions. The only way you'll get good grades on the test is by memorizing the textbook. If you get an easy grader for TA, then they will save your grade. Also, Jason can be very rude.
It's supposed to be an easy A class but he makes you work for it. Read and take your own notes. There are group discussions for grades. His last two tests were tough when they shouldn't have been. Came off as a jerk sometimes in his tone. I wouldn't have taken him if I had known this. There is also a paper.
Ask questions if you need to because he always answers them. If you do not understand something, he will try and help you understand. The TAs grade your test and quizzes, so also get close to them, especially if you need help. Never skip class because it just makes understanding the material a lot easier, instead of trying to catch up.
I took this class thinking it was an easy A.. Not the case. The class was extremely difficult for no reason. He changed his tests around from previous years which is probably the issue. He takes attendance everyday and gives pop quizzes. TA's grade everything so hope that you get a good one. Tests are difficult and there is a research paper.
Dr. Gonzalez is a great guy and I really enjoyed his goofy personality. He likes to crack jokes and tell stories during lectures. I probably could have gotten an A if I had given it my all. He takes attendance through tophat at the beginning and end of class and rewards you for showing up on days before breaks or long weekends. Nothing to fear.
This class was much harder than it should be as an intro level class. Not as easy of a grade as I expected
Dr. Gonzales is a kinda quirky guy. He's entertaining to listen to in the lectures, and is actually very helpful if you need it. His tests are just really hard. Study his lecture slides and you'll do fine, though.
I was not a fan of Professor Gonzalez at all. First of all he is not very approachable and he comes across as a know-it-all. You really do have to take good notes and read the textbook to get a good grade on the tests. I feel like he could have made the material more interesting. It was hard to stay awake in his class.
I wasn't a fan of Anthropology, but I was a major fan of Dr. Gonzalez. I was amazed by this subject, but I couldn't get into it. Dr. Gonzalez tied in jokes and sports to his class, and I'm pretty sure that's what helped me pass. If you have absolutely no interest in anth, and you're just taking it bc you have to, then Gonzalez is the way to go.
Gonzales cares about the subject, but makes it way too hard. The tests are not fair at all and require a bunch of random knowledge within the hundreds of powerpoint slides he shows, and class is extremely boring. He tries to make it hard as possible, is impersonable, and isn't helpful when you ask him for anything. DONT TAKE
Tests aren't too difficult, but Dr. Gonzales is very condescending if you attempt to talk to him outside of class. He spends a lot of time talking about his personal life as "examples" to explain material, but ends up rambling half the time. Attendance is taken every day and he assigns Connect for homework. Wouldn't recommend, but it's not horrible
I took Gonzalez for Intro to Anthropology, expecting it to be an easy A (being an intro level elective course). I was wrong. He makes the tests very difficult and covers tons of material in each of the three units. He has you type in an attendance code every day at the end of class in Tophat to prove you were there. Not what I expected.
Quirky, Funny, and Knows his stuff. I would highly recommend him
I took this class during the summer so it was rapidly paced. He was a great teacher who really knows his stuff, and presents it to you in an interesting, rather than boring way! The tests are tough, but if you pay attention in class and read the material, you will be fine!
My favorite teacher this semester!! I go to class everyday because attendance matters and I've gotten high A's on the first two tests! As long as you pay attention and study well for the tests this class is an easy A. This class does talk about Evolution so if you hate or don't believe in that or refuse to learn it I would beware. I loved it though
Good teacher
theres a research paper and the tests are extremely hard, esp the second one. too much work overall. have to pay for tophat which sucks. i think it was hard bc i didnt know how to be organized bc i took this class first semester freshman year and crammed alot. if youre good at working diligently over the course of the semester, youll be okay
You HAVE to do the readings and come to class and pay attention and take notes during lectures. Some of the questions on tests are really confusing and don't make sense. )3 makes anthropology way harder than it should be. Choose a different professor.
This is an interesting class, and Gonzales teaches it well. Tests are pretty difficult, so you really need to keep up during the semester and ideally do the readings. He is organized and a good teacher, but if you aren't willing to put in the work you won't do well on the exams.
3 test, and all are over way too much material, but he curves them. Group discussions and research paper to help your grade. He gives extra credit, but you have to ask for it. I signed up for an extra credit lab and got 9 extra points added to my final grade. Attendance is mandatory.
Do not take this class thinking it will be an easy A. Only way to get an A is to study a ton, go to class every day, do the readings, and just be a good student. His lectures are atrociously boring, and he talks on about 90% of content that won't be test questions, BUT you have to go to them for attendance. DO NOT TAKE IF YOU WANT AN EASY A.
Gonzales is super vague whenever you ask a question. He gives a lot of information but it could be organized better. He's overall fine but the tests include questions from the weekly readings, which are overwhelming. He does give a final, and I know there are other anthro teacher who do not give a final.
Makes class way harder than it should be for an intro class, lots of text book readings, confusing lectures
The tests are pretty hard but if you read the textbook, you'll be fine. He gives you bonus attendances so you don't have to attend class sometimes. If you read, missing lectures won't impact your performance on the tests very much. Make sure you sign up for extra credit. There is a paper and a final. Overall, one of my favorite class.
DO NOT TAKE GONZALES, unless you are SERIOUSLY interested in anthropology. He's a nice guy and knows his stuff well, but creates very difficult tests. His TAs grade all assignments and most of them are strict graders who expect for you to understand topics as well as they do.
INFORMATION HEAVY COURSE. Gonzales is a nice guy, who seems to have a great knowledge of the subject. HOWEVER, if you are not interested in this field, it is a colossal wast of time because of the sheer amount of information you have to memorize for tests. If you're looking for an easy A to satisfy the diversity area, take African Studies instead.
Very boring lectures with content that isn't on tests. Everything is so broad and tests are extremely difficult to the point you feel brain dead. It is not an easy A. It is a very hard course I would not recommend taking unless you are an Anthropology major.
This class was a bit more difficult than I expected. Tests weren't very reflective of lectures, and tended to be mostly information from the textbook. Attendance is taken every lecture so it is mandatory. There is also a research paper. Not too difficult of a class, but you have to work for it.
Overall Gonzalez is a great professor. He manages to keep his lectures pretty interesting. Textbook readings are crucial for his tests and a lot of studying is necessary to do well on them but that is expected in college so overall no major complaints.
He was an amazing professor! He was super easy to get in contact with and as long as you show up to class and actually pay attention you'll do fine. The study guides are a life saver!! and make sure to actually read the chapters and make note of some of the examples he gives. He likes to give pop quizzes around the holidays so actually show up.
Every class is a lecture and Gonzales is passionate about Anthropology, which aids in keeping it interesting. He can be a bit of a blank, but if you accept his taste in humor, you will enjoy his company. Beware of the TAs. They grade CRAZY harshly.
Gonzales can be an easy A if you pay attention in class and read (or skim) the reading. The course is stress-free until test time when you realize how much information will be on the exam. There are three exams, and there is always and pretty generous curve. There is extra-credit, and an opportunity to exempt the final. Take him, it's an easy-ish A
His tests used to be easy, but then he found out everyone had the answers so he absolutely redid them. They're ridiculously difficult and nothing like his lectures or study guides. His TAs also do all the grading, but they're pretty good about helping out. He takes attendance every day so if you don't go to class pick a different professor.
Boring, nerdy, and insufferable. Do yourself a favor and do not take this class unless you're a freshman or Anthropology is your major. Only reason I didn't give him one star is because the material is simple. His attendance policy is the worst at UGA
6 discussions during class. final is not required if you have an A test average
He had fairly interesting lectures and his tests were on the hard side of average. The online assignments and some aspects of the test depend on your T.A., and some of the online assignments felt a bit laborious.
This class is waaaaaaaay too much work for INTRO to Anthropology. There is no reason to make it this hard. Lecture heavy, 6 group discussion assignments, 3 tests, and a final (which you don't take if you have a 93 test average ... unlikely). Tests are over ALOT of material. Attendance policy is the worst thing I have ever experienced. Save yourself
Okay what? This was seriously the worst class I've taken here. It's a ridiculous amount of work for an introduction class. 6 discussion posts, an essay, 3 tests (w/ short answer questions- way too hard), and a cumulative final. Also takes attendance everyday and gives pop quizzes before big holidays (ie, thanksgiving). THIS CLASS IS NOT AN EASY A!!
The course material is not hard, but he will ask very specific questions on tests about specific textbook references. He can be incredibly rude to students, and will talk about himself a lot in lecture wasting time. You have to be very good a memorizing small details and read the textbook to do well in this class. I didn't like him as a professor.
Extremely tough grader and attendance is required. Tests are harder than they should be and the work involved in the discussions is excessive. Dont take this class unless youre an Anthropology major.
Professor Gonzales is just simply not a good teacher. He's an as*hole as well. Don't take the class
Jason's class is a lot of work for an intro class- six discussion posts, and a paper. Additionally, his lectures are borderline boring on a good day. However, he does teach the material that will be presented on the test. As long as you can deal with his attitude and lack of personality, the class isn't particularly hard. Just show up and listen.
this class is a little overwhelming. There is so much information on each test and then the final is cumulative. if you have a A average for the tests, you don't have to take the final, but if you don't, then he drops your lowest test and replaces it with the final. He is good about giving the class credit on a question if a lot of people miss it.
If you have the opportunity, do not take this professor. He is not a bad person or lecturer, however there is an insane amount of material that is covered and it is near impossible to memorize it all for tests. This class has three tests, group discussions, a research paper and a cumulative final (if your test average is not a 93). Too much work!
If it wasn't for the group discuss. & pop quizzes (open note & easy BTW), then I wouldn't be making the grade I currently have right now. BUT tests are extremely hard. Too much information and the short answers have to be very exact and specific. Multiple choice is from textbook & short ans. is lecture based. The tests make me regret this class.
He is a cool, funny guy. The class really is interesting, but you have 40 minutes to take his tests (3; one on the last day of class) which are 25 MC and 5 short answer. The study guides are helpful but very broad and lengthy. Aside from his test difficulty I have no issue. I did no homework except for group discussions and attendance is optional.
I was hesitant signing up for Jason's class after reading some of the comments on here but it is an easy A/A- if you show up, take notes, lightly read the textbook, and just give effort. The test are challenging but there is usually a pretty generous curve. Also six discussions and a research paper but it is all manageable.
Overall, I think he was a good teacher. I thought his lectures were interesting, and he had some good stories to keep things interesting. The tests weren't very hard as long as you go to the lectures and take good notes, and devote at least an hour or two to studying. There was a lot of busy work, but it was all pretty easy. A few easy pop quizzes.
Material is very dry and tests are difficult. My friends have another anthro professor and their class is much easier. Not too much work but try to get another professor or a different class altogether if you can
Super Sporadic Lecturer, jumps all over the place, makes you sign in with attendance code at beginning AND end of class. SUPER difficult tests lots of short answers. Friends taking same exact class have 93+, average for this class is B or B+ at best. alright class, way better teachers.
He derails lectures by talking about his personal life. The tests are pretty hard, but are cushioned by extra grades. I would recommend another professor for Anthropology if possible.
Lots of info to know in this class so definitely go to lectures. You'll do fine on tests if you study from the textbook. He gives extra credit. Nice guy. Tests are curved. Not a hard class if you try (except the second unit which is impossible). There are a few pop quizzes, but nothing too bad.
he's not as bad as the other rates say he is. that being said, you really have to work for it. lots of reading and stuff. don't take the class unless you really have to.
Prof. Gonzales is an awesome guy who really cares about his field of study. Lectures are entertaining and readily available on eLC. His tests are hard but passable. Would totally take again.. be prepared to study!
AWFUL do not take him! Tests are hard and theres only a few. Everyday he takes attendance at the beginning and end of class. Final is from past tests which helps. If you can take a different professor then do it.
Dr. Gonzales was a really great teacher. I loved his lectures, but I know some people found them boring. He tries to be funny (hes not but that makes it funny). His tests are not that hard if you study them, so make sure to take good notes. He takes attendance at the beginning and end of class, so you have to go. Fridays quiz or discussion mostly.
Dr. Gonzalez is a pretty cool person, but his class is very lecture-heavy and the tests are difficult, even if you did all the readings. There is also a big research essay due towards the end of the semester; DO NOT wait until the last minute! Group projects are discussions over a reading; attendance is taken at the beginning and end of each class.
Everything is graded by the TAs, so how hard the class is really depends on who you get assigned to. Lectures were okay, but he doesn't care if you use your phone or computer, so it's easy to get distracted. No homework other than group projects and one essay. Not a lot of work, but you have to study for the tests a lot to do well.
The whole class is subjective. Everything you turn in is your opinion/own way of putting things. There is never an assignment where you absolutely know you are going to do well, even if you know it, because you could explain it differently than others. An introductory class should not be this much work and the grading "method" was atrocious. Avoid
Took his anthropology course freshman year. Talked a lot and tended to ramble. Enjoyed the subject didnt really enjoy him.
This class is not an easy A, but definitely possible if you work for it. Gonzalez provides a ton of resources for you to succeed. There are 3 tests, which are all pretty difficult, but truly are not bad if you study and know the material. Attendance is mandatory-- he does tophat at the beginning AND end of class, and it is based on location.
Tough class but getting an A isn't impossible if you study. 3 tests are pretty difficult and focus on notes from lecture and readings from textbook. Attendance is mandatory through TopHat taken before AND after class. However, he provides many resources like posting a short answer bank, curves tests, and gives 2 extra points for picking up tests
attendance is mandatory, but he gives you 3 free passes until it effects your grade. there are pop quizzes but they're all open note and super easy. the tests require a good amount of studying, but he provides a short answer bank that he'll pull from which helps alot. overall, the information is interesting and the course isn't that difficult.
I didn't do too well on the test, and I still have an A- in the class. If you come to class pretty regularly, you earn bonus points, which you can use if you want to skip class. I earned up to like 11. If you don't use them, they count at the end. People act like he is hard and boring, but I did not really try in this class and I am fine.
So much harder than it needs to be. Tests have extremely specific questions that require absolute knowledge of the class inside and out. Simply far too much information for an intro freshman class.
Professor Gonzales teaches a fairly easy class, however, you have to show up. He takes attendance online. The lectures are boring, but just sit through the powerpoints & take notes; you'll be fine. There is one research paper and three tests, which are multiple choice and short answer. He provides online study guides and the short answer bank.
Rudest man I have ever met. Do not take him.
Do not take this professor. He has extremely difficult tests- basically you have to be a master anthropologist to do well on the them. He randomly gives pop quizzes throughout lectures and he gives a "study guide" for the test which is basically useless information.
Terrible class. Class is pretty easy if you study but lectures are boring and Dr. Gonzales is extremely rude. Would not recommend taking this class with him but if you have to, its a pretty easy A. He takes attendance every day at the beginning and end of class. There are 3 tests with 25 mc and 5 short answer, 1 paper, and 6 class discussions
This teacher shouldnt be teaching an intro level class. pop quizzes, group discussions (if you miss 1 ur group has to give u a makeup assignment in a certain amount of time- if they dont you get a 0), on 2nd to last day of class he realized that he scheduled a test for the last day of class, cancelled it & the final, made our tests 50% of grade.
You need to make sure to balance the readings and lectures when studying for tests. The class is very interesting and does a good job introducing base level knowledge of anthropology and culture. Make sure not to procrastinate on the one big project in the class!
The lectures are very boring because the content is kind of boring. attendance is taken before and after class and you have to be there for both to get credit. Theres three tests, a final, and a research paper. The tests are real hard, especially the second one. But there is enough other grades that kind of boost your grade.
Pop quizzes, 6 group discussions, 1 major research project, daily readings, and 3 really hard tests. Each unit covers so much information, so it's hard to study for. He gives a lot of room for bonus points, but class is still pretty hard. A is possible if you work for it. Provides study guide and show answer bank before tests, drops lowest quiz.
Gonzales's class is not completely terrible, but if you're looking for an easy A, look for another professor . I worked extremely hard for an A . tophat @ beginning and end of class. tests are extremely hard and specific. 6 group discussions that are easy. research paper at end of course that isn't too difficult if you dont wait til last second
The literal worst class and teacher Ive ever had. TAs do all the grading and dont grade fairly, boring material, pop quizzes, 3 tests and a final, attendance is for a grade, a research paper. dont even bother taking him
I took his online class. He has the TA's do literally all his work and it shows. He is vague in what he wants and tells you nothing more than the rubrik to go off of for assignments. I have never gotten below a high 80 in anything so far and I struggled to get a C in his INTRO LEVEL CLASS. This is a Professor to avoid at all costs.
Grade is comprised of 3 tests, relatively easy reading assignments, and a pop quiz per unit on Top Hat. I used Connect from the textbook to study for the tests and i didnt do any of the readings
His tests are difficult include such specific details. The class is in general just much harder than it needs to be. There are 6 group discussions, 3 exams, a final and a research paper. I dont recommend taking this course unless there are no other options for your major. He is qualified for teaching the course obviously but it is just really hard.
I took Dr. Gonzalez for ANTH 1102. Took the class because I thought it would be better than a language. There are 3 tests that are extremely hard and specific. Reading is required but the textbook is boring. The group discussions are fine but don't help much with understanding the class as a whole. Take anthro but not Gonzalez.
Super brutal class. Thought it would be an easy A but have had to put in a lot of unnecessary time into this class due to the fact that there's only 3 tests and your grade rides on it. It's not that he's an awful teacher, it's just not as enjoyable as it should be. He's also can be rude when you talk to him after class.
I took this class because I thought it would be a fun & easy elective to take and to give myself a less stressful semester in my senior year, unfortunately it wasn't a good decision. The professor doesn't seem to care about us, he's rude if you talk to him after class, his tests are super difficult for no reason, TA's grade unfairly.
His online Archaeology class was by far one of the worst online classes Ive ever taken. He uses quiz software for almost everything, what work he does make is usually copy and pasted from somewhere else. His method of teaching is just telling you to read the book. He obviously uses the online course as a "free money" job as it runs on autopilot.
This class is unnecessarily hard for an elective course. There are easier professor options for this course, but getting an A is not impossible. Pay attention during the lectures, do the study guide, and he gives you the short-answer questions that will be on the test for you to prepare ahead of time. There is some pop quizzes and 1 essay.
Professor Gonzalez was not by any means an easy professor but the class is not impossible. It seems like most of the people struggling did not go to lectures/ did not pay attention because this class is not THAT hard. I liked him a lot and he gives bonus attendances in case you have to skip which you can easily earn back by participating.
Attendance is taken through tophat. The lectures were pretty interesting but it's necessary to read the textbook to do well on the tests. TAs grade fairly and the tests were slightly difficult. There were 6 group assignments but they were super easy and give you a chance to earn extra credit.
I did not enjoy the material of this class, but Dr. Gonzalez does a decent job at teaching anthropology effectively. There are many opportunities for extra credit, if you take them you'll seem more interested and he's more receptive to your questions. He also was willing to look over the major paper if it is given to him a few weeks before it's due
This is an easy class, easy A. He gives u a lot of extra credit opportunities and assignments instead of all test grades. As far as Professor Gonzales goes, his lectures are incredibly boring and attendance is taken on tophat and part of your final grade. Not the most enjoyable class but it's fine if you want a bad prof instead of a bad grade.
Worst class I have ever taken. UGA should be ashamed to have Jason as an employee. Avoid this class at all cost. The only reason I got an A- was because I put in an absurd amount of work. His TAs are rude, disrespectful, hostile, unfair, and uneducated. So is Jason for that matter. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Maybe its me, I dont know. But I have taken CHEM 1211, BIO 1107 & 1108, Calc 1-3 and diff eq and got As and Bs in all of them. But this anthropology class? It sucks. He is a nice enough guy I guess but his tests are way too difficult for 1000 level class, the second unit being the hardest. I have worked hard and I will be happy with a B+
So this class is not easy. He does require a lot of work. But he does give extra credit for attendance and all the group things are ab easy A. The tests are difficult, but if you actually read like he says too they arent impossible. (and he gives so many points back). Plus, if your test grade average is an A you dont have to take the final.
I really liked Professor Gonzalez. The class has a lot of assignments, but as long as you keep up with due dates and do the study guides he posts, you will be fine. There are 3 tests, 6 group discussions, and 1 paper. If you have an A average, you don't have to take the final. Not too hard to get an A, you just have to put the work in!
Lots of outside readings, studying, projects, and a paper. All of the grades make it easier to obtain an A, but it can be overwhelming at times. Overall, difficult for a introduction class and the lectures aren't very interesting.
a funny and quirky kind of guy. he is a real gem though. he does weekly group discussions. you keep the same group the whole semester, luckily i had a good group and made some friends. you read a brief article and then discuss it every friday with your group. lectures seem kind of long, but are interesting. the TAs are helpful too
If you can show up to class, work with a group, dedicate a decent amount of time to studying, and write a research paper, you'll be golden. Lectures were long but I found them interesting and sometimes even funny. Super nice Professor and wants the best for students. Lots of extra credit, too. Not an easy intro class but not horrible.
His online class is very clearly copy and paste from past semesters. He offers extra credit, but for me it wasn't enough to cushion this GPA wrecker of a class. I have never been graded so harshly for an intro level class, and I couldn't ever figure out why because feedback was unhelpful. He is most picky about style in written assignments.
entirely too difficult for an entry level class. harsh grading, which i think can be attributed to the TAs. worst class i've taken at uga tbh
Mr. Jason was not a good teacher and kept pilling work on top of us with no break. His lectures we terrible and I couldnt learn a think. Do not take this professor if you are trying to make a good grade.
Does not respect or care about students well being. Just throws tons and tons of homework and assignments at the same time with no warning or reference from the syllabus. Take this class but with a different professor.
I had Gonzalez during COVID and I probably dedicated 8-10 hours of my time to his class each week. He is very work-load heavy and loves discussion/group projects. He gives work back to back with no breaks. At the end of the semester, you are also expected to write a hefty research paper with the same large workload. Your TA grades everything.
I took this class during COVID and it was completely online so I did not have much interaction with him. The TAs are very helpful and grade everything and the assignments aren't hard but they can be time consuming. He does give a study guide and short answer bank for the tests. I recommend reading the textbook and taking notes if you want to pass.
The class is not hard unless you don't put effort in. There are weekly textbook questions that are time consuming and unnecessary, but the group discussions are actually pretty thought-provoking. During COVID, he has lectured very few times and likes students to teach themselves. Not the end of the world if you take this class, but don't get lazy.
ANTH 1102 is a good class if you're trying to fill a credit. I had him during corona in fall 2020 and the material was easy. Didn't have to go to class. You really need to read if you want to be able to take the tests easily and be well prepared. He had group discussion papers that were also pretty easy unless your group was bad or you don't read
Dont take this class unless your major forces you too. He expects you to read lots of very boring content. Group work counts for a decent amount of your grade so if you get a bad group you are going to have lots of work to do on your own. Lastly the test and research paper were very hard. You can do good though, just study and follow the rubrics
Your grade is based on doing your textbook questions (if you do them you get 100), group discussions (which was kinda hard), 3 tests, and a research paper. Everything is graded by your TA, so it honestly depends on how nice your TA is. If you do all your work, an A is definitely doable. Read the background guides they will help for tests!
I took this class amidst the pandemic, but with this class being primarily online, it was very difficult. There is LOTS of reading and practice work. Hes not very involved in the class and relies mainly on the TAs for assisting students. He knows his stuff though. Overall, a pretty tough class.
(Taken during corona) The class was totally online, he provided all the material and lectures without ever lifting a finger (TA's did everything for him). The amount of work you received a week added up to about 10 hours per week, with group discussions due every week. He required a textbook with connect questions that were unrelated to the tests.
SO much work for an intro class, not what I expected. I also felt there isn't consistency between the different TA's grading. My TA was a harsh grader but I've heard others in my class made the same grades doing almost half the work. Interesting material, but difficult to enjoy learning it with so much work due every week. Big research paper too.
Don't take this class if you're not ready to put in a lot work and effort to do good in this class. There is a ton of busy work and so many discussions/group discussions. I would never recommend this class to anyone because it's an into level class with a ridiculous amount of work.
The workload fo this class was pretty straightforward. He was always available for questions and his tests aren't too bad as long as you do the reading and study guide. The only bad part was the group discussions, because if you have a bad group it is going to be a lot worse. It was a good class and the material was also interesting.
There was not a single "real" lecturetaking notes when the professor teaches. McGraw Hill Connect is used to teach you: lots of reading; upwards of 70 topics due/week. The TA's grade all written discussion posts of which there are 2-3/week. Wacky due datesassignments due on weekends. Save your time and take a different class/professor. Not a fan.
He is an absolutely terrible communicator who over shares useless information daily, grades terribly, and makes grammatical errors while taking points off for citation errors in posts where the source information is INBEDDED IN THE QUESTION. Passive aggressive emails when asked to clarify or help with understanding grades. I wish I had more charac
I don't recommend taking this class unless you need it. He can be really vague on tests . Sometimes he gives helpful feedback, sometimes he doesn't. The class itself is simple, but he makes it unnecessarily difficult with the way he grades. There are rubrics, but there are a lot of less obvious things he wants too. Nice dude, but sorry teacher.
This class was so time consuming and such a negative learning environment that everyone in the group me had complaints near daily of how poor this course was. The T.A was super passive aggressive and the teacher did not grade most of the course. DO NOT TAKE! Nearly four hours a day spent on this course, horrible introductory course.
The absolute worst class I have ever taken. I passed with a B (barely). The only thing worse than the professor was the TA. I have never felt more disrespected when given feedback on my discussions and papers. I thought this would be a nice summer class to get some credits for but I was sorely mistaken.
I took this class online summer of 2021. It was a very reasonable amount of work, but included lots of groupwork, and the groups changed every week. Subsequently, I spent a lot of time just trying to figure out how to do the group projects. It was horribly organized as a course, and I ended up withdrawing. Would not recommend taking.
At first I was worried about taking this class due to some of the other reviews on rate my professor, but it turned out Dr. Gonzales is great! Lectures are generally engaging and homework is easy as long as you read the textbook. Tests are mostly multiple choice and a few written response, and he curves the grades fairly. Would take again for sure!
Made anthropology way harder than it should be. I would not recommend taking this course, hes just so extra. Gives out at least 100 connect questions and groups discussions every week. If you do end up taking this course, you better hope you get a good TA, cause they basically do all the grading.
There is a lot of connect questions, however they are easy and boost your grade. Tests were online and not impossible. His lectures are interesting and attendance isn't mandatory. If you do the work, you're likely to do good in the class.
I love Dr. Gonzales. He really knows his stuff and has amazing stories to tell. There's just a lot of busy work. Do the research paper early because the busy work does not stop. 200+ questions due the same day the hefty paper is due. Lots of readings for the discussions but it's interesting stuff. You just have to put in the time for this class.
Easy class but a lot of busy work. Weekly questions and discussions. One paper at the end. Can exempt final at the end if you have an A which isn't too hard since tests are online.
Professor Gonzalez is a nice guy, but his class just kinda sucks. There's an egregious amount of busy work and to be honest, the class itself just isn't that interesting. Makes the class way more difficult than it should be.
Such an easy class! Tests are insanely easy if you take notes and do short answers. Really is an easy A!
Even though I did like Dr. Gonzalez as a person, I was required to do lots of busywork that basically added nothing to the course, like the group discussions, and took up the vast majority of the time I spent on the class. Wasn't particularly difficult, just tedious and time-consuming.
His tests are heavily based on his lecture slides, which are clear enough that you can use them to study outside of class. I found myself not going to lecture many times but instead reviewing his slides on my own time. Do the Connect questions early, doing a monotonous 2-hr multiple choice assignment is not how you want to spend your Friday nights.
Gonzales is an amazing professor!! Lectures are well organized, due dates are well communicated, and he makes the lectures fun! I suggest sitting in the front because it can be difficult to hear him in a large lecture hall. The Connect does take time, but it's only once a week. Discussions are interesting and not too difficult.
very homework heavy and grading is very inconsistent. very vague directions on assignments.
Professor Gonzalez is very vague and gets frustrated when you ask him questions.Very TA dependent and sometimes TA's can be tough graders on discussion posts. A lot of HW especially in connect sometimes there will be 90+ concepts.
I'm writing this review with 3 weeks of Professor Gonzales' class remaining and I can say I wish I had never taken this intro course. Just for a quick example, this upcoming week we have a long-term research paper due Monday, around 150-200 mult choice homework questions (these are WEEKLY) due Wednesday, then we have our 3rd exam on Friday.
He is a nice guy but do not take this class if you do not have too! If anthro is your thing then go right ahead, if not this class was boring. There is unnecessary homework & it is just lectures, and discussions that don't add to what you are learning and are busy work. And if you get unlucky with your TA, are sometimes graded way too hard.
Assigns a ton of busywork which will take you forever to do. Doesn't really answer questions and is a bit rude. Class is okay and manageable just very unnecessary most of the time. Would not take him again.
This class isn't hard as much as it is just a lot of work. My advice: do connect Qs in advance(easy), start looking at group discussions a week prior, actually study for tests, and choose the hominin evol. topic for the research paper. TAs basically determine your grade - but it's not the end of the world if you get him. Just give what's required:)
This class is getting harder every semester
Your grade for the class depends entirely on your TA. The materials are interesting and the slides are posted on elc so u don't really have to attend lectures. However, there's a lot of writing and time consuming hw.
Lots of busy work. Class has the potential to be a great class but all the reading, 250+ homework questions a week, and heavily graded criteria suck the life out of you.
Extremely boring and loves to hear himself talk. I almost fall asleep every day and it is the least interesting class ever.
needs to chill out about leaving class early. jesus.
Easily the worst professor I've had so far.
Tests are unnecessarily hard. Lots of homework every week.
Hardest class ive ever take in my life.
This class is so unnecessarily hard. There are frequent discussion posts that are busy work and all the tests are lockdown browser with a webcam. His lectures are unorganized and impossible to follow and he doesn't post the slides. This intro class is more work than any of my upper division classes.
He lectures in class every day over stuff covered in the textbook. Everyweek there is an MH Connect, 200 online textbook question, due. About every week there is a discussion post where you read or watch a few things he gives you and answer his questions. You just respond to every, 4, group members response. TA is tough discussion Post graders.
This class was super work heavy and if you dont need it for your major dont take it. Tests are super specific and there is so much material.
The topic of Anthropology itself is very boring making this class hard to stay focused in. There is a lot of outside reading and discussion posts making it very homework heavy. He himself has a lot of information, but can be hard to understand at times. He also gets mad when people leave early.
There is no reason for this class to be so hard. The group assignments are also dumb.
A lot of work and tests matter enough.
his lecture is long and boring, be ready to take note because he refused to post his slide online. Class attendant is not mandatory, you can come or not just make sure you have the note. Test is writing and MC on lockdown browser w camera, so be prepare, a lot of question is annoying specific based on text books. I would not recommend him.
This class was difficult for no reason. Very exam and homework heavy. Take another professor.
Professor Gonzales seems like a decent enough guy but I would never take this class again. I only took this class because I needed a culture credit and it was one of my most time consuming classes of the semester. Honestly, the textbook was more helpful than the lectures but I will still attend. Tests are VERY specific, not very easy overall.
There is online connect homework each week that takes at least a few hours to do. There are also several group discussion posts throughout the semester where you have to write a few paragraphs and then respond to other people. Tests are hard and you have to take them on respondus lockdown browser with webcam and mic on.
I don't understand why Professor Gonzales receives so much hate. He is super passionate during his lectures and there is a lot of time to complete his assignments. Also, tests are fairly simple if you take notes and do the work. Attendance is not mandatory, but lectures are not posted. That is only because past students sold his lectures online.
He's a nice guy but his lectures are so boring. He doesn't post his slides online so if you don't go to class you don't get any notes. The tests are online with lockdown browser and webcam. He curves the tests and gives you 20 short answers beforehand and picks 5 for the test. The final 6 page paper and weekly discussions are an actual pain.
He is a nice guy who clearly loves anthropology. Lots of work with almost weekly discussion posts (decently easy just work), weekly online textbook reading questions (completion grade). Class attendance isn't mandatory but he doesn't post lectures online. 3 online tests with lockdown browser, can skip final if good grade, and there's a final essay.
Professor Gonzales is definitely passionate about Anthropology and a fairly nice guy, but his class is homework heavy. Weekly discussions are extremely time consuming and connect questions are due every friday that take usually 2+ hours. I would not recommend taking this class if you're taking other homework heavy courses!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Terrible professor. Would never put the lecture slides on d2l. Isn't accommodating to any life situation. He won't even give you an extension. Doesn't know what he's doing, and loves to assign busy work. Don't take him unless you have to. Tests are annoying, but the final is easy.
There is a discussion post every 2 weeks but it isn't super hard, weekly homeworks that can be time consuming but very manageable. He doesn't post his lectures but you really only need to be there on discussion days if you can ask someone else for the notes. Tests can be taken online with lockdown browser and cam.
A good amount of work, but it really helps you level out your grade. The tests are a little harder but with the extra work it really helps out.
Do not take this class. My advisor said it was easy and a great way to get credit, but its not. The homework is unbearable; like 200 questions a week, discussions like almost every two weeks that literally take hours and are literal essays, won't post the slides online, and his lectures are extremely boring. he likes to hear himself talk.
I actually really liked him. He grew on me as the semester went on. Has an eccentric personality, but once you get used to it, he is really fun. Lectures were super easy. Lots of discussion posts, but after the first one you get the hang of them. TAs are really chill with their grading. Most things are completion grades.
His class was fine but more work than what it should be. The test aren't easy and I sometimes find it's not enough time. The discussions are full blown essays with citations and the weekly connect questions takes hours upon hours. His lectures are a little boring, so I can't say I recommend. However, if you out in the work you'll get an A+.
Honestly not bad at all. It was kinda hard to adjust to the workload but its 1 reading/connect assignment a week, 1 discussion post every other weekish, 3 tests, and a paper. The final is optional if you have over a 93 test average. Tests are respondus lockdown browser with a webcam. Lectures are kinda boring. Ended up being my fav class.
This guy is pretty strange but funny sometimes. Tests were not difficult but the webcam/lockdown browser was annoying. Lectures are very easy to lose focus in, and he assigned a lot of tedious homework that took up unnecessary time. But, he gave multiple opportunities for bonus points and made it pretty easy to get an A. Would recommend.
Prof. Gonzales was OK. His lectures go on tangents sometimes and he can lose the point. He's very knowledgeable about the subject but the tests are really difficult and stressful (lockdown browser, timed, camera on you, 25 mcq, 5 short answers). There is also one big research paper at the end that you get plenty of time for, but he's a hard grader.
attendance not required, homework is through connect which can take some time but not too bad. does a lot of discussion posts and makes u group with people in class for a grade. tests were kind of hard and was very lecture heavy. he does not post any ppts on elc. test was on lockdown browser which was annoying. final research paper at the end
This class is very easy as long as you go to class. You have weekly connect questions which are easy to complete, but time consuming. The tests are very similar to the study guides and lectures. There is a big research paper at the end of the semester that takes a lot of time. It is easy as long as you give yourself enough time to complete it.
Honestly not that bad, lectures are boring but you should go because he offers bonus questions on the test that are over stuff covered in class. Discussion posts are the worst part of class but the other assignments and tests aren't that hard. Would definitely take again.
if you're taking Anthropology because you're required to, the class is easy as long as you remember to do weekly reading assignment
he does not post any of the lectures online which defeats the purpose of attendance not being mandatory. his tests are also extremely hard and the discussion posts he makes us to are paragraphs long and you have to cite in each one. there is also a paper at the end which is time consuming on top of a cumulative final exam.
The tests are not hard except for a 20-question FRQ bank where 5 problems are picked and put on the test. There is a research paper due at the end of the semester and it is not difficult but time-consuming. Some of the homework takes way too long and isn't always relevant to the tests. Does not post his lecture notes.
Felt like I had to work a lot harder than I should have to scrape by with an A in 1102. The connect questions and discussions take a surprising amount of time, but the TAs grade really loosely which helps. The 20 question short answer bank on the tests will become your enemy. Going to class barely helps, but he does have some interesting stories.
I loved Dr. Gonzelz! He's very entertaining in lecture and loves to tell stories about his previous work in archaeology. HW and tests were both easy and discussion posts were kinda boring but not bad. The paper was also a super fun way to dive deeper into a certain aspect of the class. Overall fun, easy, and a great option to full a requirement.
if you want an easy gen ed, this is not it. this one class was more work than my other courses combined. weekly textbook assignments (2-3 hours each), 6 discussions (few hours each), one final paper, 3 exams and final. the content was mildly interesting but I'm confident it could have been so much more intriguing. this class is not worthwhile.
The lectures can be dry, but Dr. Gonzales livens things up with interesting stories. While the homework takes time, the TAs grade leniently. unstuck study helped me prepare for the tests. Overall, a manageable course.
Overall, the course is fun in the content, but the professor is largely unapproachable and hands-off with grades. TA's have wildly different expectations on what "a good grade" should include for writings and group submissions, and although the class doesn't have a textbook and is an intro course, there is quite a bit of reading every week.
If you are looking for an easy A gen ed and don't care about anthropology do not take this class. His lectures are super chill, but there is a crazy amount of busy work. He gives weekly quizzes based on ~2-3 hours of outside reading + weekly writing assignments, it is such a distractor from my important classes and you basically teach yourself.
This professor truly wants to make his class as good as possible. There are tons of quizzes, papers, and readings, but if you succeed in all those areas with an A average, he exempts you from the Midterm and Final. The readings get old, very old, but I can not complain because I hate exams. A lot of work but easy class if you try.
If you want to tank your GPA, take this class. The TAs would grade so unnecessarily harshly; an answer that would have gotten you an A- in an AP class would get you a C max. Turned out to be my hardest class even though it was unimportant to my major. He can also be very passive-aggressive in emails and rude in person when you want to ask something
I wouldn't recommend this class for an easy A, especially if you're not into anthropology. There's a lot of work: weekly articles, quizzes, tough writing, Top Hat tasks, and unclear group projects. It requires a lot of time and effort, and the final project adds more work. The professor is knowledgeable, but some tasks feel unnecessarily long.
DO NOT take as a easy culture. I put in more effort and time for this than all my other classes combined. Long weekly readings, specific quizzes, and confusing writing assignments. The professor and lectures are good, with weekly group assignments (easy 100s) and a vague project. You can exempt the tests with an A, but it takes up a lot of time.
These ratings are actually so over-exaggerated. The class is really not that bad for a college course. Like yes there is a good amount of assignments each week but college isn't like high school, this should be expected. Coming from someone who puts in the bare minimum and procrastinates, I was still able to end with an A+. You'll be just fine!!!
This class was an easy A. Work outside of class included readings, quizzes, and writing assignments each week, which take a bit of time but are not difficult. There is also a group project. Engaging lectures, very knowledgeable professor. He also asked for the feedback of the class and made adjustments accordingly.
Easy class but a lot of work. Professor is easy, but some people don't like him. The TA's grade a lot of the assignments so that can mess you up if you're ta is harsh. You don't take the exam as long as you have an A on the other assignments. Weekly: lockdown browser quizzes with retakes, readings, writing assignments, and a participatory homework.
Free my man Jason he deserves more than 2.9 stars!! Ridiculously easy material to understand and you can exempt the exams if you do good on the weekly quizzes, which are on lockdown but you get 3 attempts. No textbook but the weekly reading/homework assignments were fairly time-consuming, just space them out throughout the week and you'll be good.
Dr. Gonzales is knowledgeable when it comes to anthro. He tries his best to make lectures interactive and to add stories from his experiences. The weekly writing assignments are very doable (the answers are in the topic overview), and the quizzes, even though they are lockdown, you have the chance to take them 3 times and see what you got wrong.
Professor Gonzales was very knowledgeable and passionate about anthropology. There are weekly quizzes online with a lockdown browser and weekly wiring assignments. The only tests are a midterm and final. TopHat is used and costs $40.
This class had a lot of work considering it is a 1000 level class. There were long weekly readings, quizzes, and writing assignments. Writing assignments graded by TA some graded leniently and others graded very harshly. He refuses to post his note slides, so you have to take notes on his disorganized lectures. Do not recommend anthro or gonzales.
Other than a ton of homework this was a very interesting class. It is extremely easy to do well as long as you do the work. Your grade is mostly dependent on your TA as they will be grading your weekly essays.
This class is easy if you put in the work. There were two tests, but you could opt out if you had an A on the quizzes and writing assignments. This is a very attainable goal. Each week, there was reading, but it was never anything too horrible. Professor Gonzales is pretty understanding too.
A lot of reading and work for a intro class. The lectures were fairly engaging and you can tell that the professor enjoys teaching the topic.
He lays out everything directly in the syllabus. the assignments each week are the same schedule, so you know what you have and what to turn in. There is a writing assignment every week, but it's a 300 word paper, and one of the questions is always an opinion question. Uses tophat, and is very passionate about the subject he teaches.
LOTS of reading, but if you pay attention and take good notes in the lectures, you can get away with skimming. Very generous grading on quizzes, lots of extra credit, TA's grade writing. Everything is very clearly outlined. This is a fine class.
Gonzalez gets a lot of hate but in reality he's a good professor. He gives second chances, and is VERY funny. Goes out of his way to listen to student feedback.
This course was easy to pass as long as you stayed on top of the content. Lectures were usually a bit boring but easy to follow. The course is very group work heavy, generally working in groups once a week. The final project was in groups. Several online readings weekly, and an at-home quiz mid-week. Overall, funny lecturer but slow-moving content.
He wasn't that bad, honestly if you go to the lectures and keep up with your work, you'll be fine. Watch out for some of the TAs though, they can definitely make or break your grade, but if you have any problems with any grades you receive, you can always take it up with the prof. Also, he is a very sweet man, reminds me of my grandpa.
This class is a lot of work. Weekly quizzes, homework, and writing assignments. The readings are insane and would take upwards of 6 hours to do well on the quizzes. However, it is easy to get a good grade bc of how many assignments there are. TAs really determine your grade. Lots of group work, every week.
It's a crap ton of work. Weekly quizzes (lockdown browser), weekly readings & homework, and weekly writing assignments. Everything is graded by a TA, so it can make or break your grade. But if you bring up a bad grade to the prof, usually the grade can be changed. Boring lectures; attendance is required as it's recorded by TopHat. 7/10 recommend.
You can tell he's enthusiastic about what he does, and he's very accessible out of class (groupme). It's also nice that there's no textbook. It was pretty annoying to do a quiz, a paper, and read around 36 pages a week, but it's nothing too hard. He also removed the type-in questions from the quizzes.
Nice guy who is genuinely interested in teaching the subject, but the amount of work he assigns is riddiculous for a 3 credit hour intro class. Definitely stay away if you already plan on taking harder classes. Assignments aren't necessarily difficult but his class will take away so much time from your other courses so tread lightly.
TopHat for in-class questions. Each week: multiple readings, TopHat assignment, written reflection, and a mini quiz with lockdown browser. Maintaining an A in the class exempts you from midterm and final! TA's grade most assignments. Lots of group work, and a group research poster. Workload is heavy, but assignments aren't difficult.
Good professor, his lectures are pretty straight forward, and the assignments are easy they just take time. If you do all his work, you'll be fine. There are lot of group activities in this class and those group participation points are a huge part of your grade so hopefully you get a good group.
I would NOT take this class again. So much group work, a TON of homework, rude TAs, etc. Not to mention it is genuinely painfully boring, but then again I am not an anthropology fan. I got points off on my writing assignments for them being too detailed, then for not having enough detail? All of the TAs are hard to please. I would stay FAR away
Gonzales definitely is passionate about his work and wants students to learn. He assigns so much work though, especially for a intro anthropology class. The work isn't too hard but everything about this class is SOOOOO boring. Lectures are mandatory as he takes attendance with tophat and heh as several assignments a week as well as a group project.
The class is so easy so take it if you need it but if possible DON'T take it with him. He doesn't grade so its all up to your TA and they all grade with different standards so some people would get A's while others get F's for the same work. He thinks he is the smartest person in the room & loves to hear himself talk. Quizzes and Papers every week!
The TA's control your grade. My friend had a great TA that just graded off of completion and I had one where she read every line of every paper and never gave me an A for any of my work. If you can help it, take someone else but if you can't, hope you get a good TA.
TA's grade everything so honestly your grade comes down to luck. There are weekly writing assignments (300 word min.), readings, and quizzes (20 questions), but those are fairly easy to do. Also if you have an A individually in both the writing assignments and quizzes you don't have to take the exams. LOTS OF GROUP WORK AND TOPHAT QUESTIONS.
I thought that professor Gonzalez did a fine job of teaching the lectures, although I did find it difficult to pay attention. For grading, almost everything is done by the TAs and from my experience the all vary in how harsh they grade your weekly papers.
Decent amount of work outside of class, but nice professor. If you do well on the quizzes, you can exempt the exams. All grading is by the TA's, so be careful.
Solid professor, lectures are engaging. Heavy emphasis on weekly group work, and a fair amount of assignments due every week. An A is very achievable if you keep up with your weekly assignments.
