he is an easy going sort of guy, at first he may seem sorta strict, but his class it fun, and he will offer extentions, you just have to ask in the right way.. no i do NOT mean sexually, just politely. it helpf if he already likes you from your class participation. will offer help out side of class, as well as extra credit! have fun!! :)

Loved this class! very interesting. Mr. Gooch is a very very nice guy and easy going. One of my favorites by far.
Knowledgeable on the topic of philosophy past and present. Very enthusiastic in class, but talks fairly quickly and might be hard to understand at first. It takes a bit of time to get used to his quick speech, but once that hurdle is over the class is very interesting.
Speaks so fast you could run out of ink taking notes! But if you take notes, READ the chapters, turn in all homework, AND watch related videos on youtube for extra clarity, you will make an easy A.
the best!
Awesome class. It's philosophy, so by necessity it's going to be difficult, but he explains things quite well. Overall, it's been one of my favorites here at YVCC.
Good sense of humor, youngish and easy to relate to. Told us the first day of class that we could probably skip as much as we wanted and still pass. No homework, just practice tests. Most of the class was easy to get through with just common sense. The bulk of the class is tedious equations but manageable if one showed up daily.
man i love the gooch, been around the gooch for two years
I LOVED THIS CLASS SO MUCH MR. GOOCH WAS VERY FUN AND LOVES WHAT HE TEACHES :)
I learned a lot from taking his class also very straight forward and easy.
Loved this class! It is a challenge at times, but Gooch was very helpful and would make sure you understood what needed to be done. He is a very nice guy who, despite what he thinks, is super funny and makes the material (which is often very dry) interesting! I definitely recommend taking good notes for the tests, but besides that it's pretty easy!
symbolic logic is like learning a new language. gooch breaks it down perfectly and in his online videos really presents the material clearly. May get a little confusing sometimes but this class is all about "practice makes perfect"
Gooch is a super helpful professor. I took 3 of his classes and his teaching is remarkable. Definitely recommend him to anyone interested in philosophical courses/ theories.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He's always very clear, and his lectures are really interesting. Pretty intelligent & funny guy too. 2 papers and some tests if I remember correctly. I also took the online 120 class with him. It was more difficult, but not ridiculously so. Just be sure to study. 5 tests, that's all you're graded on.
Gooch is a very interesting you will see him walking into class with headphones on. His class is very interesting you gain a lot of knowledge about the world and yourself as a human being. I recommend his class to very student! what I love about his class is that he is very organized and he enjoys what he teaches!
I had Gooch my first quarter here and I find him to be very interesting. He clearly knows what hes doing and has a love for it. He's incredibly intelligent, but if swearing offends you, avoid him haha. In our intro to phil class, he only asks for two papers, from a choice of 6, and only 4 quizzes, from a choice of 8. I would take him again for sure
I LOVE GOOCH! I'm going to be so sad when the quarter ends! His lectures are extremely easy to listen to and understand. I was thinking about minoring in philosophy later on, and Gooch definitely inspired me to do so. I would take every class with him if I could.
Great teacher! Super easy class would defiantly take it Agian! Very intresting, lots to learn just take good notes, tests are a piece of cake
The class was easier than expected. The lectures were boring, but understandable. Makes jokes throughout the class. Knows students don't want to be there. Essays are time consuming. Tests are easy, especially the final. Taking notes aren't that important, but useful. Allows a sheet of notes for each test.
Gooch had some interesting lectures, and he tries to make them even more interesting by adding personal stories. It's very nice to have a sheet of notes for each test, and it is helpful to read the chapters (though if you don't it won't really ruin your grade). The most important thing is to attend class and take notes! No extra credit!
Jason made philosophy so interesting and fun. He is really funny and fun to listen to, and it isn't a hard class. He explains everything clearly, and he will answer any questions that you have. Don't miss class because lectures are the bulk of his tests and are pretty interesting. He is probably the best teacher I have had at YVCC.
I would recommend anyone to take this class. Very interesting subject material and Gooch is a great teacher, lectures are long but entertaining. My best advice to you, (which is the same advice he will give you): get your papers out of the way early in the quarter. Just do it.
Great guy who makes class interesting and easy to follow.
Jason Gooch is fun to learn from. He has a dry sense of humor that makes philosophy interesting. He is more than willing to help students and encourages questions. Another good aspect of Gooch is he doesn't try to impose his opinion upon on the class he biggest goal is to inspire each student to think for themselves.
Took symbolic logic and I would strongly avoid this class if possible. Very challenging, and practically useless class. Tests were very hard.
Gooch was hilarious, and made this class interesting. He didn't impose his own views, and i learned a ton from him. Easy to understand teaching style and interesting lectures. Word of advice: participate in class discussions, take hella notes, and start working on papers/quizzes early (and send him drafts, because his feedback is very helpful).
Amazing professor! Engages you in the lectures, some sense of humor, and gives relevant examples to the subject at hand. Get ready to take notes and actually participate in lectures, makes then go by faster and more fun. As long as you read the chapters and study you should be fine for the tests. Would very highly recommend!!
Gooch has been one of the best instructors that I've had the privilege of knowing and learning from. He's funny, he cares, and he is willing to teach you if you are willing to learn. I would wholeheartedly recommend him to others. If you need the PHIL&120 class, take it. Pay attention, but don't stress out over the tests.
Gooch wants you to think for yourself, and not regurgitate his views. If you have questions, he is accessible outside of class. But due to his habit (unlock the class-door, leave, and return the minute class starts) questions before class are difficult, and it's best to schedule an appointment if you are unable to talk to him directly after
This is one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. You are able to go to his office to receive additional help however his body language makes you feel like you are not welcome, he also makes comments such as he won't have sympathy on you if you don't do good on the tests. He is very condescending and not compassionate.
Jason is a really awesome professor. I enjoyed his class so much. His lectures are engaging and some even eye opening to who you really are if you stay open minded. He also does assignments in a way that will help you work around your schedule which is so cool if you're a busy person. Has a sense of humor. Loved this class I would take it again.
One of my fav teachers at YVC. Keeps his views out of class which is amazing in an ethics class. The class is easy and way better if you (the entire class) participate in discussions. Even had the option of doing comunity service to replace the final (ethics only). He has extra copies of the book but I never really used it, his lectures cover it.
Great teacher! Great class! Philosophy is weird but he explains things well
This was my favorite class, awesome professor. His lectures will get you thinking differently about life. The tests are all multiple choice & the final consists of true or false ?'s along with an essay, and the best thing about them is that he lets you use a sheet of notes. Book is barely used in class but you need to do at home reading. Will miss!
Amazing course. Jason gives fantastic lectures and is always available to answer any questions you might have. Very flexible with rescheduling tests if class is missed.
Gooch is one of the best professors YVC has. You are given a syllabus at the beginning and you learn youll have to take a certain number quizzes and type 2 essays (only 3 pages double spaced)! He is hilarious. Not a time we didnt laugh. I recommended this course to everyone I know. Jason will leave you thinking long after you take his course.
Gooch is very humorous and he defiantly makes the class interesting. However he does talk super fast. Make sure that you are interested in philosophy and logic before taking his class or you probably won't do well. His tests are all multiple choice but they are very tricky! There are also 2 papers and 4 quiz requirements throughout the quarter.
Jason is a great teacher. If you have taken at least English 101 it will help in Phil101. There is some writing and some pretty heavy reading that can be daunting but do the reading before the lecture and you will have a better idea of the concepts. 1 page of notes for all exams including final. I enjoyed his class, not so much the material.
Jason makes for an awesome philosophy professor. Hes young and has an indcredibly dry sense of humor that creates a better atmosphere for learning something as complex as philosophy. Fair warning - this class can be very hard if you have no interest in challenging your own views. He touches on some pretty controversial topics, so be prepared.
He explains the concepts really well and his humor keeps your attention and helps with remembering important points! However, his tests are super difficult. Each one consists of 25 multiple choice questions, but it isnt very clear how youre supposed to interpret them so they are very tricky. The class average was generally around 60-65%.
Great philosophy professor! Awesome lectures and clear understanding of theories.
Great professor overall, philosophy is a very tough subject but he's a supper hilarious guy and makes the lectures entertaining. Take lots of notes and study. Really study for exams but quizzes, papers, and final are not difficult at all. Highly recommend this class/professor.
Great guy. Took what gooch calls "the calculus of logic". Nothing like math, just pay attention and ask questions when you need help. Overall, great class. Plus you get a full page of notes for each test (except test 2), and the final isn't mandatory.
I loved his class. Philosophy can get a little bit boring and heavy at times but he manages to make it interesting and engaging to the class. Attendance is somewhat mandatory - there is an exit task due at the end of each class which is his way of seeing who was present. Also, I used the textbook maybe twice, so it wasnt a necessity.
Just an overall great class. Does get annoyed when students dont participate but not in a rude manner. Hes pretty funny and the lectures are solid. Use the study guide.
I love Gooch!!! I've taken three classes with him and I love him more every day. Not only does he make every day interesting, he makes sure you're on page and helps you when you don't understand. He's funny, entertaining, and smart. A's are always attainable if you try. One of the best at YVC. Mirrors your effort for a good great.
Loved this professor so much! Truthfully wished I took this class in person. Just so that I could have had more interaction during some of the more interesting subject matter. He wants his students to think, and challenges you to do so! One of the best online classes Ive taken!
I took this class online. Expectations were clear. Consistent quizzes that help you study for tests. Easy to follow video lectures plus answers to textbook practice questions. Always available for face to face help. Easy to pass if you just follow the practice schedule online. Good experience.
Enjoyed taking his online class. For an online instructor he is very engaged with communicating. Gives good feedback on grading. Do your work and you will pass.
I love gooch favorite person ever in the whole world.
OMG Gooch is the best
Gooch is the best teacher ever. He is very helpful if you don't understand something. He is also very hilarious.
I really enjoyed his class. While watching his lectures I wished I was in person. He's very understanding if you have issues in your personal life. The workload isn't too bad but everything is extremely interesting. I found myself discussing topics I learned with friends and family. 5 quiz questions (usually opinion), 3 exams(w/ guide), 2 papers.
Overall the lectures are amazing I found myself talking about the topics to friends, and family. There are 5 quizzes you have to turn in, 2 main papers, and 3 tests use the study guide!. The class/ assignments really get you thinking fairly a lot! The assignments are flexible except the main tests
Professor Gooch is a very easy grader. There are 5 of 9 quizzes you need to take. If you do the quizzes, you will most likely get 10/10. There are 2 of 5 papers to write, which he grades more harshly. There are 3 tests, each including multiple choice and short written responses. Most of the material is common sense, but look at the study guides.
I Have taken both PHIL 101 and PHIL 120 with Professor Gooch. Both Amazing. For 120, beware, as this is a hard class. This is not the class you want to take if you're looking for an easy A. But, the material and module contents are laid out perfectly, and make it easy to learn if you put in the time and effort. Make sure to do the practice problems
Professor Gooch is an easy grader with a clear grading criteria for each task. Each quiz is worth 10 points, while each paper and exam are worth 100 points. At the end of the quarter there is a make your own module that is worth 50 points. There is very little room for error or making mistakes with only having 600 points for your entire grade.
Didn't get many interactions (online). You see videos and do practice problems on your own. If you have problems he is more than willing to help if you reach out. The subject can be hard and you may feel alone but that's more because of the online style. He seemed like a good enough guy. I would take another class with him. (In-person though)
Interesting guy. A lot of reading and watching videos for lectures. As long as you stay up to date each week, you should be fine. Final is creating your own module, not focused on remembering everything from the quarter.
Professer Gooch is a pretty cool guy, chill and his classes are laid back and lessons are insightful you only have to turn in 5/9 quizzes, 2/5 3-page(double spaced) essays, and 3/3 tests all semester the book involved in class is provided thru a free link lessons that will follow you through life and make you think about how you lead it
Mr. Gooch is one of my favorite teachers I have ever had. I took Phil 101,120, &115 w/ him. He genuinely cares for his students & wants them to succeed. He welcomes questions & has clear office hours. He is unbiased & doesn't punish you if you disagree/think differently than him. He has a sense of humor and provides great feedback. Highly recommend
Professor Gooch is a great online course option! He absolutely set his students up for success and was super kind in every interaction him and I had! Loved the class!
One of the best teachers I've ever had. I took 3 of his classes while at YVC and enjoyed each class. This teacher cares and wats his students to succeed. He welcomes questions and gives good feedback. Highly recommend!
Phil&120 HARD! as a professor he is great.
Good professor hes a tough grader but will give you feedback. I was a bit overwhelmed with setting myself up in class but eventually got the hang of it. Study guides have been very helpful to know what to expect in exams. There are 5 quiz out of 9 discussions based on what you learned and think. 2 papers out of 5 options. 3 exam youre allowed notes
This class is HARD! Unless you study and make sure you understand you'll pass. I didn't like that he had quizzes every week. It may be confusing to understand should have dropped the class when I could've. It can be hard since its online but don't be scared to ask for help. I personally wouldn't recommend this class as a math alternative.
I took several courses from this professor and I enjoyed every one of them. He's a laid back guy, willing to work with you if you have an issue, and his classes are clear-cut. He makes it clear what kind of assignments you will get and how they will impact your grade. I kept taking his classes because I knew exactly what to expect. Highly recommend
Mr. Gooch was a great professor! He was very understanding and willing to work with me throughout the quarter. Only hard part about this class is that there is only one assignment or quiz a week with one final argumentative paper. Thus, not a whole lot of things in the gradebook. But, he offers lots of help and makes the class very enjoyable 10/10!
I loved taking Phil115. Great professor and material. One assignment per week but it is lecture heavy. Pretty straight forward grading rubric.
You must complete five quizzes (short answer questions) and two essays. You choose which ones you want to do so some weeks all you have to do is read the material. He gave study guides for all three of the tests which were very helpful. The material is very interesting and easy to understand. This is the best online class I have taken!
This was one of the most interesting I've ever taken! Instructor Gooch was clear in his lectures and assignments. Attendance is recommended seeing as his lectures are heavy. Mostly weekly quizzes, about three exams and three seminars. The instructor provides helpful study guides and is very clear with everything! All in all, great class!
10/10
I definitely recommend professor Gooch. He is very nice and responds quickly. You will learn a lot in his class and he gives a reasonable amount of work.
Class material was pretty manageable. One paper and presentation on a chosen topic, three exams, a few seminars, and a discussion board on Canvas pretty much weekly. About one weekly assignment, due at the end of the week. Gooch takes an eccentric approach to subjects, making the lectures often engaging. He never endorses his own personal views.
One of the most enjoyable classes I've ever taken. Prof Gooch makes materials understandable and fun. literally 2 tests, some discussions, and 2 papers (he gives you 5 different opportunities to write them). Never pushed his personal beliefs and made the classroom a safe space to discuss. I 100% recommend Prof Gooch
I loved his class! He's an amazing professor.
This was one of my favorite classes at YVC. Gooch is awesome! Highly recommend.
Prof Gooch is an amazing instructor. He offers timely responses, and really cares about about his students' success.
Professor Gooch is very easy going. His workload is manageable. He only ever assigned 1 thing per week and were due by the end of the weekend. He assigns a lot of discussion posts and his tests have essay questions. The class requires a lot of writing.
I took PHIL101 with Jason Gooch and for this class, there was a lot of material each week to get through but for assignments, there were 9 quiz opportunities, and you had to submit 5, 3 Tests (all mandatory), and 5 paper opportunities and you had to submit 2! Very manageable and he was very understanding and helpful! Great class!
His Phil 101 class isn't hard, a decent amount of reading. He gives you a choice of 2 out of 5 papers to write, 5 out of 9 quizzes (quizzes are 1-2 written paragraph), and then there is a few large tests (3 I believe) taken through Respondus, mostly multiple choice w/ 3 "essay" (just a paragraph or two) questions. He's easily reachable & very nice.
Jason is an amazing teacher, and you can tell he cares about what he teaches. He does a great job of presenting the materiel, and keeping it interesting and engaging. I learned more in his philosophy class that I feel I have learned in any class prior. If you've ever been interested in philosophy this class is a must!
Jason was a very good teacher, he made lectures super interesting and made sure you understood what he was saying. He looks at every perspective and is very understanding. You have 5 prompts you can write a paper on and you have to write 2 papers. You will also have 3 in class seminars with 4 big tests. Attendance is graded.
He's an awesome professor, just do your homework and study the notes on canvas and you will pass. Highly recommend his class.
Professor Gooch is a very organized and approachable instructor. His online lectures are clear and well structured, which made the class easier to understand. His quiz/test are timed but it's reasonable. I took this class as a first year Running Start student, and I felt very excited to take a Critical Thinking class. Overall, I liked this class.
