Tough teacher, decent explanations. He comes across as arrogant and as if he is too good to teach a 100-level chemistry course. Not recommended.
great prof, easy going, lots of help
DR. Halfen was amazing he taught the content very well and was always willing to help you out. He is a very smart man but he know how to teach to students so they understand the concepts even if they are not interested in the class
Even though the material can be tough, he explains it very well so you can easily do the homework and quizzes. Make sure you do the homework even though it isn't graded cause otherwise you'll do bad on the quizzes and tests. Very nice guy, wants to help you learn. Totally made the class cool.
Dr. Halfen is the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. Prior to taking chemistry with Halfen, I HATED chemisty, mainly because I never understood it. However, Halfen did such an excellent job of teaching the material, I decided to minor in chemistry. I strongly recommend taking Halfen, he's by far one of the best professors at the University!
See comment below, I agree 100%!!!
Prof. Halfen has an excellent teaching stlye. He finds a way to simplify the most complex concepts so that anyone can understand them. plus he's not too hard on the eyes!
Good Class, Great Teacher. Take chem 104 with him!
Great teacher! Very good at explaining things and helping you to learn them. Its a tough class but he is great at teaching it. Take him if you can!
Take Dr. Halfen if you want examples straight out of the book and poorly explained material (he doesn't use analogies very often). Homework isn't collected so there is no motivation to do it. Lab is easy with Halfen, usually takes 1-2 hours instead of the whole time. Overall, nice guy, but his teaching style didn't click with me.
Dr. Halfen is overall a nice guy, but kind of intimidating. He expects you to know a lot. Its a hard class in general, but he does a pretty good job at explaining things. Definitly do the homework because they show up in the tests and quizzes.
He is a very good professor in lecture. But not worth the amount of extra info he expects you to memorize, and his exams are ridiculous. 4 points each for multiple choice! If you like a challenge take him.
Dr. Halfen is very easy to understand. His lectures/notes are written on the board and are very clear. Homework is not checked but if you do the readings and homework problems it really helps a lot. He assigns the problems w/ the answers in the back to check. Tests are fairly easy, just go over the notes and study and you'll do fine. Great teacher
Very inteilligent, good lectures, tests tough but fair. Homework not required, but do it or your grade will suffer.
Halfen is very clear on lecture and the assigned problems are very helpful. but you do have to earn your grade. If you want to slack and get an A then do not take him. If you actually want to learn the material then he is a good prof to take.
Dr. Halfen was such a good prof that I took him for 104 after having him for 103. The tests are easy if you do the homework problems and ask for help. He is intimidating in person but will help on e-mail. Take him for both lecture and lab. His labs usually get out early.
GREAT
he knows what he's talking about but sometimes i feel like he has a hard time explaining it... he comes off as arrogant and rude. i do not reccomend taking him.. most of our class right now isn't doing the greatest.. i wish i would of taken a different teacher.
Mr. Halfen is a great prof! he is always very clear in his lectures. His tests are pretty difficult..but chemistry in general is difficult no matter who you take it with. He's very passionate about chem and has always been very helpful!
i thought professor Halfen was a very good teacher! his power points were clear even though half of them had the wrong answers. In the class you are mostly on your own. You have to work really hard for an a because test are extremely hard! there is no homework though
His power points were very helpfull and very clear. He explains things very well. If you attend class, do your homework and read the text book you should be good. The class is challanging but managable. I would deft. take it with Halfen!
Halfen is very clear on the subject. His power points are very helpful and he makes study guides before tests. He didn't make attendance mandatory, however you would struggle more if you didn't. If you do the homework, attend class and read the text book you should be good!
I was scared coming into the class, but it turned out to be fine. Take good notes, DO THE HOMEWORK!!, go into his office hours and ask questions about the homework, b/c more than likely, they will be on the exams. Exams are straight forward, but difficult. Definitely steady hardcore for those and study hard for the final!! Excellent prof.
All I can say for this class is STUDY STUDY STUDY. Attend class, read the book, use the study guides, and talk to him during office hours. If you don't do these things, you will not pass this class. Much harder than I expected. Halfen goes too fast in his lectures.
A very straight-forward professor. Read the chapters before going to lecture and you will definitely get more out of it. Lectures are very helpful for understanding and remembering the material. However, if you have a question make sure it is absolutely necessary to ask him unless you want to feel awkward as he gives you a snappy response :/
Is great.
Prof. Halfen was Awesome. He did an excellent job at explaining the material and he taught straight out of the book which makes it really easy to follow. His Exams are difficult but are also right out of the homework and lectures. DO THE HOMEWORK He doesnt collect or grade it but if you want to do well in this class you NEED to do it all around fun
Do not take him. He is not helpful if you miss class, even if it an excused absence by the university. He will not respond to your emails and he says his office hours are not for helping students. He tries to make jokes during class, but they suck. He writes all the material on the board yet his exam questions are not similar to the bored work.
Take another professor or don't take it at all unless you are willing to do all of the work and donate hours a week to this class. It will be the end of your high GPA if you decide to take this professor. It is a difficult class, but he is a difficult professor.
Really funny guy, but he gives out really hard exams with little materials to use on them.
Definitely a hard prof. The class is well structured, and if you aren't afraid to work hard you'll do fine. Weekly quizzes help keep you on track and focused on the course.
Definitely a hard prof but does his job really well.
Professor Halfen is not very relatable to students although he does a good job teaching. It's a hard class to take, with 4 chapters each test, but with notes from the book AND lectures, you'll do perfectly fine.
is great!
He is very good at what he teaches. I love his class. He is very helpful when you ask for help. If you study hard for this class, you'll get at A for sure.. :D
Halfen is a really good professor. He is very helpful and you can really learn chemistry from him. Chemistry is pretty handful to take in and Halfen really helps you with that. I highly recommend taking chemistry with him. You won't regret it.
Okay professor. His tests are super hard, make sure you do the reading and go to all the lectures. (And remember the D2L quizzes) He's not good with make-up work so DO NOT miss labs. Also doesn't reply to e-mails, which is extremely frustrating. Other than that, really smart prof, knows what he's talking about.
I really struggled in Chem 103 with a different professor, but Chem 104 has been pretty easy so far. He makes 8 am lecture worth it, and explains everything so clearly. He goes above and beyond to make sure all students have adequate resources to succeed.
Very difficult tests. Lab makes up almost none of your grade so if you're a poor test taker good luck. He also doesn't want students to use office hours for questions so expect to be on your own for most of the course.
Very difficult tests. Lab worth very little. Good luck. Not allowed to go to office hours for help.
He is an awesome professor that works really hard to make sure his students understand the basics of chemistry. Just expect to study a lot because there is a lot of studying involved, but if your willing to put in the time, you will do awesome.
He is a great guy i talked to him everyday before class and he is really there to help you if you need it. His lectures are very informational but you really learn a lot form them
This class is by no means easy but if you show up to lecture and take good notes to study from the tests are not that hard. He posts the lecture notes which are very helpful because he can go through some things quickly and it's nice to have the practice problems we do in class already written out. He's a funny professor and you get to see that.
Dr. Halfen is willing to help if you ask him questions (especially in lab) - the more specific the question, or interest you show in working to find the answer instead of him just giving it to you, the more help you'll get. Go to as many lectures as possible, he covers a lot and it's hard to catch up. If you work hard, you'll get a good grade.
Dr. Halfen was INCREDIBLE!!! He was a much better teacher than any high school teacher I've had. His tests can be tough sometimes, but a good way to study is to practice the online homework before the tests-I would HIGHLY recommend him
He expects you know everything he is talking about and doesn't clarify. Would not recommend him.
Honestly one of my favorites!
He is seriously the nicest and most helpful professor I have had, I understood everything and was actually convinced to change to a Chemistry major!
Professor Halfen is a wonderful professo, I wish more science professors were like him. Chem is a hard class for a lot of people but he is very clear. He really knows how to teach an intro class. It is not an easy class by any means, but as long as you read and do the online homework and a little more, you will do fine in the class.
As someone who didn't take chemistry in high school, this class was really difficult. He expects a lot of memorization in a short amount of time. Lab was challenging, because you teach yourself, take a test and then do the lab. He is very clear and engaging during lectures and if you take good notes and study hard, the tests are doable.
As someone who started this class expecting to fail, I truly appreciate Professor Halfen. He is extremely understanding of a variety of different situations and is available to help when needed. Not a big fan of chemistry but enjoyed him as a professor. Also he has fishing youtube videos.
My roommate recommended Halfen to me and I am so glad I took the class. It's probably one of the easier classes that I have taken in college. Homework is really manageable. Some people struggle with tests, but don't let that scare you. They are fairly simple and really exactly what he goes over in class. 100% would recommend.
Basic chemistry course, chemistry is hard course so you should expect that. But would highly recommend Halfen over others. He is great with grading and lab you are not required to hand anything in for points.
Lectures are long and boring. Chem is hard, but the assignments are easy point and help out the grade. The class is curved also.
I thought he did a nice job. He advised us to sign up for a tutor on the first day of class, I wisely took this advice and also attended the student SI sessions and both of those together were extremely helpful for me learning the information and doing well in the class.
Jason Halfen belittles students when questions are asked, he rarely answers email and gives snarky remarks, and he also makes lecture way more complicated than it needs to be. I tried to ask questions during class and he made me feel stupid and I felt uncomfortable asking any other questions. Go to the SI sessions or you won't pass.
He is a good teacher and very excited to teach. He is a loud talker but it is probably because the lecture hall is so big so he needs to be heard by everyone. I would highly recommend printing off his notes before hand (it'll make your life easier). Labs are fun. Study for your tests days in advance and you'll be good!
Very confusing teacher and not very nice. Highly recommend taking someone else for chem.
Professor Halfen is ver knowledgeable about chemistry, although, he makes concepts way harder than needed and makes things more confusing. Course was mandatory for me and if you have taken chemistry classes prior, it's more doable. If not, good luck! He doesn't answer emails and rushes you a ton in class and expects you to know everything already.
Halfen is an intelligent guy, he just doesn't know how to show the most efficient way to do things. He is by far the hardest chem professor UWEC has and i would definitely look into someone else before him. If you're very familiar and good with chemistry, you'll be fine. But if you aren't, good luck!
Halfen is the best! I recommend taking him for beginning chemistry classes, both the lecture and lab sections. He is always willing to answer questions and his lectures are clear and organized. He does not test on anything that he did not lecture on.
I took AP Chem in high school and found this class to be extremely easy. If you have little Chem background good luck. Professor Halfen is a cool guy but spends too much time on each topic so the end of the semester is a rush. Lectures are long and repetitive.
Dr. Halfen is by far the best professor I've had. His lectures are easy to follow and he explains everything in simpler terms. The homework and weekly quizzes get a little long but they help a lot in applying lecture material. If you do your best and show that you want to succeed, he extremely helpful and encouraging when you ask him questions.
Halfen is a very good chem lab professor. He explains everything perfectly, but if you forget your chem goggles you better be ready to hike back up the hill to get them! I would definitely choose him as a professor if you have the chance!
I took chemistry in high school and hated it, but found chem 103 to be quite easy, especially with Dr. Halfen teaching it. Homework every week but it helps you prepare for the exams. I highly suggest attending the SI sessions as well for extra practice. Put in the work and effort and it's a pretty easy A. Also, Lab is easy I always got done early
If you love and are really good at it go for it. He goes through lectures and information extremely fast. Exams are extremely hard but if you do good on the homework and quizs it is very passable. I would recommend him for lab 10/10. I would recommend him for lecture 5/10.
Dr. Halfen is a professor who is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. I found that this class started out very simple, but eventually became very difficult as he flies through the material and expects you to know everything instantaneously. Homework is an easy 100%, but tests are very difficult. Doesn't always attend his office hours either.
I took chemistry in high school and I still thought a few units were a little difficult. I thought he was a fairly good professor but may be a little more difficult for other people to follow. Doesn't allow phones during class. Homework assignments each week. 3 exams and 1 final. Exams not super easy, but going to review sessions helps a lot.
Hard to follow in lectures. He really does love what he's teaching, but there is constant new information that isn't the clearest when given. The tests are difficult, but there are homework assignments and quizzes every week that help boost your grade. Super knowledgeable, just not the best teaching style.
Professor Halfen is a very nice guy, he just goes through the content very fast and his tests are pretty hard. Do the OWL assignments and D2L quizzes to the best of your ability.
He was very accessible outside of class and helped me a lot when I didnt understand a concept. There are weekly homework assignments, but they help you keep up with the coursework.
I thought he was a very good professor, this is tough content, but he helps a lot with his presentations and follow-along notes. The Cengage homework and weekly quizzes really help you learn. You must study to pass his tests, but if you know the content you will be fine!
If you skip his class you will not pass, and read the textbook. The tests cover things we never learned about. Is not helpful outside of class. GO TO SI SESSIONS! He knows chemistry but can't really explain it very well. If you are great at chemistry like got an A in high school you could take his class otherwise DON'T do it.
Halfen goes through lectures very fast and doesn't ask if anyone needs help. His tests are super hard, homework is easy. DO NOT take this class with him unless he's your last resort. He is also rude over email too so good luck if you ask him for anything over that.
Halfen is a smart guy forsure and can explain topics very well. However, his tests are so hard. Considering 4 exams (and a final) make up most of your class points. Halfen words his tests so confusing it throws you off. It will be a basic topic but he is so wordy you will stare at the question for 10 minutes. Good luck.
Halfen is passionate about chemistry, I'll tell you that. He is so smart that I feel he has a hard time simplifying the content so the average human can understand it. I really enjoy chemistry, but I found it hard to enjoy Halfen's class because he made it pretty difficult. Heavy lectures, lots of note taking, and homework every week.
Such a nice guy! Sometimes he can talk kind of loud which is a lot to handle if you have him in the morning, but otherwise our grade is based off of 3 worksheets - pre lab, in lab, and post lab. Attendance is mandatory and if you skip it you'll be screwed. I really liked this class and the labs were fun
Prof. Halfen is very unorganized. He missed so many labs that he expects us to figure out on our own. He never makes aware what is due for the class and gives no leeway when it comes to late work. I had a family member with a serious heart condition go to the hospital and I was not able to complete my work. I emailed him and he gave me a 0 :(
Chem lab with him was very easy and simple. If you ever had a question he always answered it and helped. Ever since COVID he started posting on line versions of labs so it isn't too bad to miss one lab day. He also goes over all math before or during the lab so you understand it.
I had him for lab this past semester and he made the labs very understandable and was willing to answer your questions as you went along. Unfortunately, he is not very reachable outside of class. I asked him to post Lab Upload pages a few times and it took him a few days to even acknowledge my email. Talks a little loud, labs are straightforward.
Prof. Halfen's Chem 106 Lab is amazing. He does a great job at explaining how to do the lab beforehand and for a majority of the labs he explains the math sections of the labs as well. He is a really fun professor and is very understanding.
He gives very thorough review/ lessons/ lab instructions. Very knowledgeable and willing to help. If you finish your lab early you can leave. You are graded on your lab (with a rubric or specifically states what's required. You take pre/ post lab quizzes. I recommend taking both quizzes after the lab because the lab and quizzes are due on Sunday.
Hard to get ahold of by email. Posts lots of assignments last but still expects them by same due date. He doesn't grade the assignments or give feedback. Most of your points come from the exams that can be very confusing. He does the multiple choice section online. You'll only have a periodic table provided on the exams, so lots of memorization.
Professor Halfen is definitely very knowledgable in chemistry, he understands everything and can go into depth regarding a lot of the topics. However, as a general chemistry student sometimes it is helpful to just dumb it down a little. I had a very hard time learning anything from him in lecture and had to teach myself almost everything.
I really like Professor Halfen and love his lectures. This class is tough cause it covers sooo much information, but if you study hard you can pass; 88% is still an A and 76% is a B. I do wish he offered extra credit and that the homework would be graded faster. He has very helpful study guides though and will meet with you to review tests
Professor Halfen was a great teacher! The class was hard but if you put in the effort you could definitely get a good grade. The textbook is needed, and all homework assignments are from there. His lectures were off PowerPoint but he did a good job at explaining the subject matter and didn't just read the slides. Overall, it is a good class!
Dr. Halfen was a good lab instructor. He does talk pretty loud but is clear about explaining what we need to do. Labs were generally straightforward, with a quiz before and after, and a TA available for help during lab. However, Dr. H was very inaccessible outside of class and never responded to email. Chem 106 was easy but don't miss a lab.
Prof Halfen is extremely knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about, but that is one of the reasons he was difficult to learn from. It was hard for him to dumb things down. All the homework is done out of the textbook but is basically graded on completion. The tests were hard but doable.
Professor Halfen had a great understanding of all of the content in the class, but was very hard to learn from. He sort of expects us to understand what he is talking about and doesn't really take the time to make sure we understand it. He talks the whole hour and doesn't engage with us or asks questions. You basically have to teach yourself.
He goes through all the lecture slides really slowly and doesn't do a good job covering them. I go to do the homework confident I know how to do it when in reality I have to teach it all myself. I would not recommend taking any of his classes.
Jason Halfen shows clear understanding of the material he presents in class. He knows it like the back of his hand. Unfortunately, he lacks the ability to teach it. He explains it to us as if we went to college and got a degree in chemistry as well. Homework is hard and sometimes isn't even about what we learned. Wouldn't take him again.
I really enjoyed my Chem Lecture with Dr. Halfen. It was a pretty tough course for me personally, but after I found some outside-of-class supplemental instruction I started to really enjoy the course. He is also very funny! If you have him do not skip lectures! And take advantage of his notes.
Very knowledgeable about the subject and is open to questions throughout his lectures. Will always reexplain if asked to. Has an assignment and a quiz due every Monday (annoying but honestly makes the tests so easy). Only 3 exams in total each with an online portion and an in class portion each (online worth more points than in class).
Jason was a great professor. He would preform experiments in lecture and was nice. At times his lectures got long yet, a lot of his stuff is online, including exams/final.
Kind, sometimes would cancel Friday classes and have an online lecture, which was nice. Recommend. Not a lot of homework.
Exams are online and the grading scale makes the class a lot easier, but as a professor he kinda sucks. Horrible at teaching chem on an intro level.
Inorganic Chem This class was switched to hybrid which meant we had to teach ourselves everything. It was required for my major so I did not have a choice since it was the only class at the time. He does not teach you anything and you are expected to put in many hours outside of class time.Class was canceled on the days with the most heavy content
I had Halfen for intro chem and didn't like him. To my surprise, he was amazing at teaching higher-level chem! He was thrown into teaching ochem last minute and won't be teaching it again but I wish he was. Lectures were engaging, explained everything well, and gave a list of textbooks problems to work on outside of class that helped with exams.
Great professor and did not try to trick you on exams. Exams were exactly what you had seen in class and on practice problems.
If you have this professor, he assigns problems from the textbook for you to work on outside of class. He grades them based on completion. This professor doesn't use OWL. So, you really don't know if you are doing well or not until you take the tests. He also has no clear guide line or study guides to tell you what will be covered on the tests.
Funny Hockey player and relatable. Knows what he's doing and has fun doing it.
great professor, it's obvious he knows his stuff and has taught this subject for a while. be careful of sitting in the front row - he will rub a balloon on your hair for static electricity demonstrations.
Make sure to go to labs as you don't want to miss them. Dr. Halfen was a very good teacher and he's good at explaining things.
If you miss the lecture you will be lost in the next class. He is very lecture heavy so pay attention to everything he says. Exams are half online half in person however, all quizzes are online. Homework assignments are a completion grade so don't skip them because they are basically a free 100 points for the class. Taking good notes helps.
This was a hybrid class and was honestly one of the worst profs. I have had here. The lecture videos he posted were not even his and the writing was not readable. When asking him questions, he never clearly answered them.
Prof Halfen is very knowledgeable, but his lectures can be hard to follow for an intro class. The workload is heavy, with weekly assignments and quizzes. Thankfully, Unstuck ai was a lifesaver for test prep and helped me stay on top of the material.
He is very knowledgeable and answers any questions I have. It is clear he knows what he's doing.
I had him for CHEM 105 and CHEM 109 Amazing professor, very caring and knows his stuff, super chill grader, and half of the exams are online. Super fun lab professor as well.
He is knowledgable but not a great prof. One quiz and one assignment a week. However, the assignments are problems out of the textbook and don't always match with lecture. There are three exams, the last one being on the very last day of class. In addition there is a cumulative final at the end. Lecture slides are given but don't have all material.
Hardest class I have ever taken and I used to like Chemistry. When asking for help he kind of brushes it to the side or doesn't really provide a helpful answer. Although he is knowledgeable and likes the content, if you don't understand it he doesn't break it down into simpler terms. Textbook homework doesn't always relate to class, and exam heavy.
It was easy to schedule time for help outside of class, but that doesn't mean he's going to help you. He claimed I was wasting his and my own time when trying to ask questions, and I never got them clearly answered. Many times during lecture he explained things in a more complicated way than necessary.
Dr Halfen was great for chem 105! He's a great lecturer and you can tell how organized he is and the thought he puts into class. He is definitely one of the tougher chem 105 professors, but he is great at teaching. If you stay on top the homework and do the extra practice problems you will be fine. I would definitely recommend taking him.
