i hate phy...@ least he's jks tho...=)
Very good prof.
really nice guy. term test made easy, and he's funny!
its his first year teaching this course and he's great at it! excellent prof, very friendly and approachable!
hes sooo hot lol hes an awesome guy and hes really nice too. keep up the good work
excellent prof
That guy is totally awesome. Bouncing off the wall, very energetic. Tries very hard to promote enthusiasm to the material. I think I like physics now more than I ever did. Good job, Jason. Keep it up:)
Despite his second year teaching, he's very enthusiastic, clear, and organized, and is probably the best physics lecturer I have so far. Keep it up Macho Man!!!
he is cool
AMAZING!!!! makes the class so much fun, although i have not had a test yet, we have done a lot of demonstrations! This guy is much better than Harrison!
well organised, very enthusiastic, satisfactory answers to the questions!!!
He's pretty good. Clear, reasonable explanations. His test this year, however, was far from easy and, compared to last year's test, was extremely challenging.
His lectures were fun and interesting and he wrote clear notes but the test was too tricky!!
Test was a killer (he wrote it within one night!), but he's one of the best PHY138 professors.
One of the most enthusiastic prof I've had so far, and does a great job in this lecture with the explanations and the demo. The test was quite hard, though that was expected...
enthusiastic, helpful and approachable.
He is soo cute only went to class to see his beautiful face...just soo adorable. He is very clear and understanding, but his tests are hard but makes great reviews for tests. My overall point he's the most cutest proff I've ever seen...
Picture a prof, sitting in front of the class; he reads from his textbook, utterly unprepared, as the students sit, and yawn, and watch the clock, and wonder why the hell they went to class at all. Harlow is the EXACT OPPOSITE of that teacher.
Easy going prof
The best ever.
test not bad considering the course. Helped me with my lab issues. Thanks Harlow. :D
He is funny, helpful, and sooooo cute!!!!
we never seemed to get an answer from him when we asked him questions during lab...
Replies emails promptly, but is very rude and often unsympathetic to a student's circumstances. The rules in his classes are very rigid and non-flexible. His comments and feedback makes students feel undermined and frankly, stupid and worthless.
Extremely great professor. Very helpful and keeps the class engaged. My problem was not liking physics. Great professor though!
He's not easy, but if you read the syllabus, Prof. Harlow is super clear about class expectations. He's always ready to talk about physics. High energy. Kind. Hot.
HE IS AMAZING!!!
Possibly the best professor in u of t so far. Easy coursework and tests, if you work diligently an A average is guaranteed!
Not a knowledgeable Lecturer. Every time I think of him, I recall the most popular word he used to say: THAT'S A VERY GOOD QUESTION. THE ANSWER IS I DON'T KNOW. I have to say I did not learn much useful stuff from his lecture. The course is mostly stupid common sense.
He is really really helpful and you pretty much got yourself a guaranteed 80% average if you go to all his classes.
Amazing prof! He made physics so much easier to understand and class was actually fun!
Lectures were well organized and delivered with enthusiasm and good energy. He is available to help students outside class. Very approachable and friendly. Term tests are a bit difficult but it is possible to do well if you study all the material which are made available online.
He s personality is sooooo cute
Out of my 4 years at U of T, he's one of the best profs I have ever had. He is very enthusiastic and helpful. He would also "bring in" helium balloons into your tutorials and all sorts of other fun experiments. It doesn't matter whether you have background knowledge in Physic or not because he is very clear and his lectures are very useful.
Jason Harlow is the best professor in my first year. He did prepare a lot for the lecture by making his own percales video, uploading lecture notes and making the online funny quizzes. I like his teaching style, and he is so easy-going. His tests are fair but not difficult. He always curved the marks for students if the average was below 60.
Great guy. You can tell he is very enthusiastic about physics... but it was a tough class, especially since I did not take HS physics :(
I did not go to lots of his lectures tbh. According to my iclicker grades, I only went to 14 of them last semester. Honestly I learned physics the best from the textbook and from his powerpoint slides which are posted on blackboard. He is a diligent and responsible professor, always replying my emails and giving out marks promptly.
Harlow is a great prof, so my friends say because they've taken physics in highschool. As a person who did not take physics in high school, I didn't think he was really clear in all his lectures. This is partially my fault (probably the whole part) but I found that his tests were fair and he was a very enthusiastic prof.
Great proffesor. Favourite during first year,, very enthusiastic about what he teaches and makes everything clear and simple. Also looks a bit like Justin Trudeau
His lectures very pretty interesting. All the demos and examples were entertaining. It's not too bad just pay attention to details. His tests weren't hard per say, just practice his past exam, Helped ALOT
He's a good lecturer (I do have physics background), but he isn't the nicest person outside of class. Blew me off personally and a few of my friends also had similar experiences.
Professor was very engaging in class.
Solid prof, interactive classes are enjoyable and his examples are excellent. Reading the book can help a lot though isn't necessarily mandatory.
He is an amazing teacher.
fun prof & uploads most of the lectures and stuff to youtube
Great prof and really wants to see his students succeed. Actually makes physics enjoyable--currently one of my best marks.
Super entertaining lecturer but he works through the topics (even the tough ones) very quickly; if you have background knowledge of physics this should be a fun course. If not then good luck lol
Amazing Prof. Very intriguing and actually cares about his students. Though some may say his teacing style is old fashioned, I quite like it. The grading is fair.
Student respect is very important
One can be great in teaching, but is goodness also important as a person?
Prof. Harlow was really funny, enthusiastic, and did a lot of interesting demonstrations, so I ended up enjoying his lectures. I felt like he did a good job explaining physics concepts. However, his midterm and exam were unbelievably difficult, and I felt like doing hours of practice problems barely helped prepare me for those nightmares.
Great at explaining concepts. Tests were somewhat difficult, but he was amazing at teaching you the basics of physics. To get a good mark you need to do lots of practice however.
He's in love with physics. Absolutely adores it. He's okay at teaching.
He is super understanding and quick to respond back on discussion board and emails. Super funny lectures and love the demos in videos, really helps to understand the topics.
Fun, chill, overall pleasant professor! He's really enthusiastic about physics and cares for the student's understanding of the material.
The quizzes and tests were not hard at all as long as you were prepared. The level of homework or readings were handleable. He answered questions quickly and he liked this course a lot.
He explains concepts clearly and proposes many helpful practice questions during lectures for students to answer using poll. He'll always guide us to rethink about the question based on our answers and stress the key concepts. Take phy131 with him if you're not confident in learning physics (like me).
His love for physics is contagious. Sometimes he goes too fast when explaining calculations but otherwise his demonstrations and explanations are concise and easy to understand. I love attending his lectures.
He explains the concepts very well and also has clear grading criteria. In class, he will sometimes show demonstrations which are really helpful to visualize what we learn in class. The Zoom Poll questions are also a nice little touch to help keep us engaged during class. For any first years or upper years needing an easy course, take PHY131.
Deciding to have "midterms" biweekly in the middle of an online semester is pretty transparently a bad idea. When the avg. for the midterms is high, you can see the disgust on his face. The fact that he's enthusiastic about Physics does nothing to help me cope with the workload this guy puts on you for in a physics for life sci course during COVID.
super sweet and u can definitely see his passion for physics, but he explains the content so fast that it makes u feel hella dumb. also, his explanation makes everything sound super easy but in his examples he pulls out equations you have never seen
Super charismatic prof, keeps lectures engaging
He's honestly just been very accommodating to students and is very reasonable when it comes to to grades as well. He gives us loads of opportunities to get homework credits and is always there to answer questions. Most of all, he has a very uplifting personality during lectures so its easy to stay focused! (Also on Fridays he uses funny filters XD)
Really good professor, passionate about physics and showing a lot of support to his students. Love every minute of his lecture.
Definitely the best professor I've had this year. Definitely take Physics 131 with Harlow if you have the option. He's passionate about the subject, communicates the content well, and is happy to answer any question you may have for him.
You may heard of many GOATS, such as Michael Jordan, pele, Michael phelps, etc (you get the point). But prepare yourself because you are about to meet the biggest beauty youll ever meet in your life and his name is JASON HARLOW aka Homie Harlow aka THE GOAT
He's such a great guy. He loves physics and so he projects that a lot which is really good because it is a hard subject. The homework is heavy but helpful and for credit so it is totally worth it. He is always super fair as well
Prof. Harlow is the best prof I've ever met! He gives lots of homework credit and he always readily answers questions from students. He also tries really hard to light up the online class atmosphere by having funny camera filters on his face, Team Up quizzes, and doing demos. I want to say a lot more great things about him but I'm running out of sp
One of my favorite courses I took this semester. Such a caring professor, he actually cares about our well-being. Great at teaching, always makes sure we are keeping up and provides lots of resources & office hours. I used to dislike physics, but after taking this course with this prof I'm starting to like it a lot.
Prof Harlow is funny and genuinely caring. Physics is definitely not something I usually enjoy but I'm glad I had him because he made it a lot more enjoyable. He can be a little fast at times but he's approachable so you can always ask questions. He explains things clearly so I personally did not find it necessary to use the textbook
He is pretty fair and understanding answers all questions. All the lecture materials are made available. He gives students a lot of chances to boost their grades.
Prof. Harlow is an amazing professor and really cares about his students. He made PHY131 really enjoyable and his grading/tests are very fair. BEST PROF EVER!
Very nice professor, really caring his students. Many bonus marks for both practical and homework. Online written tests are sometimes hard but if you have learned the lecture you can done it well.
I did well but he bumped marks for everything. Marks didn't feel earned. Unnecessary stress over fair tests made hard by short time limits, too few marks, and no backtrack ability. He's a very fun/hip lecturer - his biggest positive. Lectures too fast. Exam had too few marks. Seems approachable but kinda brushes off student concerns with a smile.
So thing is, my POV is VERY biased, cause I didn't take physics in high school (and that's cause I hate the damn subject). The dude himself is pretty chill, has a fun attitude and genuinely loves physics. But he's tough in marking and left me HEAVILY stressed. He bumped the marks up in the end, but this course was my biggest academic stress ever
He does so many things to make the lectures interesting. The sweetest professor that I had for this semester. Out of 5 tests, we could drop one test mark. It kinda reduced the stress of having to take the test every 2 weeks.
Smiles a lot, teaches well with demonstrations, even in an unprecentented online semester. Easy tests if you did physics in high school. Would highly reccomend, and i would take another class of his.
He was alright. Don't get the hype but maybe that's just because he was teaching online for the first time. It was frustrating that, on tests, we couldn't see all the questions at once or go back and check answers at the end. Felt like he was purposefully making things insanely difficult so we wouldn't cheat and that doesn't seem fair. Gave EC tho
Great prof, one of the best Ive had in the past 2 years, hes funny nice and considerate, yes you need to work but not as much as other classes, plz show him the love he deserves.
Very good professor.
If I gave this review a month ago, when the course finished, I would've given him a lower grade. But now that I've had some of Sealfon in PHY132? Well, let's just say you appreciate a Professor who is able to simply give homework that (relatively) prepares you for a test, and doesn't waste your time or expect you to dedicate it all to his course.
Overall a really solid professor, not really much else to say. Questions tend to be essentially very similar to the ones done in lecture, but usually with small changes in wording and/or numbers. As long as you attend class and are able to do the lecture problems and understand them, you'll be fine.
Best prof I had in first year! A very beloved, caring, humorous teacher that everyone loves! He has been teaching for 15 years based on my remembrance, and we love his in-class demonstrations of those easily understandable physics experiments that explains things well! If I would take physics again in undergrad, I would directly go to his classes!
Prof Harlow continuously showed compassion for students during this horrible switch to online learning; he was enthusiastic in lectures, effectively prepared us for his assessments and gave ample opportunity to boost your grade through homework, teamup etc. Now that I'm in 132 I especially miss his teaching style, assessments and mentality.
easily one of the best profs i've had, i love how passionate he is about physics and was quite good at teaching. he also gave a lot of opportunities to earn homework credits which was a godsend considering i didnt do the best on tests... his assessments could've been done just a tiny bit better though
Professory Harlow has been the best professor I have ever had. To put this into perspective, before I came to UofT Physics was one of my least favorite classes and it was also the class in which I had the worst mark in. However, after taking it with Harlow, I fell in love with it. His lectures are amazing and I feel as if I actually want to learn!
Most of the assessments in the course were easy like the participation marks and the problem sets. Because of this, he made the biweekly quizzes quite hard! Overall, I would not say that this course is a breadth course :( But Harlow is really passionate about the course and so kind!
Lectures were slightly fast-paced for me, but he did a good job explaining difficult concepts. Wish we had more practice questions because I often felt unprepared for his tests, but he's overall a solid prof.
His lectures were not useful for exams and pretty useless for exams. His questions were out of the blue.. When avg is very low, he laughed and chuckled at the class for long time. Many students use chegg on his exams and other assessments which is why avgs are not normal.. avoid him and find a better prof
Professor Harlow is the most entertaining professor I've had. He always kept classes engaging with great demonstrations and a sense of humour to match. He can sometimes move through lectures too quickly so you definitely have to be paying attention. Assessments are not too difficult, although the timing is strict.
Jason Harlow is caring and passionate, he is a very likable guy, however, the course was formatted poorly in my opinion. The textbook was absolutely horrible, and hardly any practice questions were assigned to prepare you for the tests and exam. Good luck in this course if you don't have an extensive physics background, you're going to need it.
PHY196 was a very enjoyable seminar class. The content was interesting on its own, but Prof Harlow's lectures provided extra insight and information, plus the participatory aspect of the class was helpful in clarifying and solidifying our learning. He's a great and funny prof.
The format of his test are really bad (1 question at a time and no going back). It makes it really hard for students to score well on the tests even when they completely understand the material. Even upon complaining and explaining how this method of test taking isn't effective, he just told us thats just how it is.
Harlow is very passionate and friendly. The tutorials are mandatory but deadly boring. Weekly teamup quizzes and assignments are generally quite easy, but then the exam is a bit harder to balance out. Harlow can take a while to reply to emails. You don't have to buy a textbook.
Late review but I had him for PHY196, very caring professor and explains things pretty well.
Clear effort to make the class fun with lots of demonstrations - however, seems to be too much focus on that aspect and not enough on the quality of the lecture. Didn't think it was possible but lectures made content even *more* confusing. Make sure you know where to find help.
Prof Harlow is really passionate about teaching and really a good grader that he gave many extra credits. He is one of the best professors I met at uoft and really cares about students.
He made it hard to understand basic concepts of physics. I had a medical emergency and he was not understanding of my situation. Lots of heavy assignments and useless in class examples that made it harder to understand course material. Overall, really bad professor, I would not take another class with him for sure.
Harlow was entertaining. He stays on top of modern social media, like BeReal, Snapchat, etc. He also dressed up as Boba Fett during Halloween! I found his lectures difficult to follow along with, and he doesn't explain key physics concepts well. I find he lacks some substance. It doesn't seem he understands fundamental physics principles deeply.
He's great. I really do hate physics but I found him entertaining and enjoyed attending his lectures. Lots of demonstrations to keep us engaged. He's pretty funny and laughs at his own jokes which makes him more funny. This class is a lot easier if you have high school physics background, though. He posts detailed solutions videos on youtube!!!
Great prof. Quick with posting solutions and detailed explanations after term tests. Tries his best to keep students engaged during lectures. PHI131 in general is a lot easier if you took high school physics (Starts with 1D Kinematics and other easy stuff).
Really liked this class. He is very caring about his students. Talks a bit fast but I never had any problems with that.
Prof Harlow is a really good prof. He has a great sense of humour and is really nice and caring. He's really fair because the test questions have the exact same difficulty as that of the questions in assignments/lectures. Great experience as one of my first courses at UofT, will definitely take more courses by him.
I was never a fan of math/physics in high school and needed physics to help me study for my MCAT, and coming into this semester I was worried I would struggle. Dr Harlow is a great prof and teaches everything in a clear and concise way. his labs were tons of fun and he even made some of the final and midterm questions directly related to labcontent
I'm not continuing in physics, but Prof. Harlow is my favourite prof at U of T! He has engaging (and funny) lectures and you can tell he genuinely cares about the success of his students (will reconsider grading scheme if lots of people don't do well)! All tests were completely fair, if you do homework there is no reason you can't get an A.
Jason Harlow is legendary - amazing lectures and great demonstrations. This course is one of the best, and you will actually learn. He's extremely funny and his Harlow-ween costume is iconic (Mandalorian). You will 100% enjoy this course!
Very well-rounded prof and made me enjoy physics as a student taking it for the first time
Professor Jason Harlow really cares about his students and answers all of our questions frequently. The lecture is well designed with detailed explanations and interesting examples. I can feel how passionate he is about teaching this course. I would say Jason is one of the best professors I ever met at UofT.
Makes lectures very engaging and time flies by tbh. Would 100% recommend taking any physics course with him!
This man deserves a raise expeditiously. Great prof, always interesting, charismatic, and fun. Love the in-class demonstrations. Only thing negative I could say about the course was being in con hall.
AMAZING professor. Jason put a lot of effort into making engaging content for students. He really cares about what he is doing. His passion is absolutely contagious. Great at office hours, always taking the time to answer each question patiently. Very considerate and spends effort on making each student feel heard and understood.
The most engaging course I took in my first year in life science. I've always hated physics but Prof. Harlow definitely made me hate it less.
He is very nice and has really engaging lectures. I struggled at first but when I switched to watching the lecture recordings and paused the lectures to try the problems before he explained it I did a lot better. The only way to get through this class is to make friends, though.
Immensely jovial, but his slide decks are haphazard, and his assessments are far more rigorous than his lecture problems. Overall, I would still recommend him.
A really funny and professonal prefessor, he will give you all the points in assignment. Only test you need to pay attention to prepare, but you can also bring the aid sheet to the test.
the way this guy structured phy131 was really weak. he tends to waste a lot of valuable lecture time on things that arent that important such as mini tophat multiple choice questions, and a lot of funny yet time-consuming physics jokes. tests were really difficult. practical activities felt useless and off-topic from course work
Great
Runs the course very well and structured, good lectures.
Prof Harlow really cares about your success and his passion for physics is palpable! (has pre-class surveys you can ask questions on that he'll address in class, makes lab prep videos for every role in every experiment, records detailed solutions vid for midterms, has office hours every day a week before the final)
HE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR!
Definitely GREAT
Truly a fantastic instructor! He is very clear and descriptive in his explanations. His passionate and positive attitude fostered enthusiasm within me for this course! The videos are all well-made, professional, and even entertaining. I love his sense of humor and general enthusiasm for the course. The best online course I have taken thus far!
Prof. Harlow is super fun, and excellent at explaining concepts. He is always engaged and it feels like he truly enjoys teaching. I also appreciate his puns and dad jokes. I cannot recommend him enough, he is such a gem to learn from.
Extremely passionate and very funny lecturer. You can tell he puts a lot of effort into lectures, and they're rife with funny jokes, anecdotes, and music. I took this as an elective, so it's not a topic I'm interested, yet I always enjoyed the lectures anyway. Great prof!
Harlow does not teach. When only 39% of the class gets a question right he says 'oh dear maybe I didn't explain that right", then moves on to the next concept.
Professor Harlow is the best among all professors I met this semester. He always put a lot of efforts in his lectures and does interesting experiments during the lecture. He is an interesting person who always makes us laugh. If you say its your birthday in the pre class survey, he will say happy birthday to you. I really like him and his lecture!
Slightly overrated as he does lots of TopHat and very little problem solving and isn't always the best at explaining. Lectures were always fun as he did some experiment and engages the class. Tests were difficult but fair. The fact that he says "happy birthday" to you on your birthday gets a thumbs up from me. Favorite prof so far at U of T!
cool guy he replies to emails and helps me in times of crisis!
Prof Harlow is engaging and passionate about physics. He provides helpful resources like pre-class surveys, lab prep videos, and solution videos. Unstuck study can be a useful tool alongside the textbook for exam prep.
Literally such an amazing prof, his lectures are sooo entertaining and informative. The tests are very accurate to what he covers in lectures and no surprises. Course itself becomes a more intense in the final (3rd) section, but the first 2 sections of the course are very doable. He teaches VERY well, sat front row every lec and never got bored.
I found that professor Jason Harlow was obvious and concise in his lectures, however, some of the tests given in this class were unfair. For example, in our first and second-term test, the free-response dragged people down by 10% by TAs who did not know how to grade properly, affecting my test score.
Harlow is a great, engaging, and inspiring prof. His short answers were a little tricky, but if you write stuff you'll get part marks. high school physics helps a lot for this course, so brush up. during the semester do a lot of practice (as with every physics course). Enjoy your time in this class because there are few profs like Harlow at UofT.
Super nice prof! Very passionate about physics and a great lecturer.
Where do I begin, professor Harlow is the best prof at UofT. The course is wonderfully structured and content very easy to engage with. He explains the material very well and provides LOTS of opportunities for support to students.
Professor Harlow is literally the GOAT. Genuinely cares about his students and is willing to help. Lectures are engaging and useful to attend.
First of all the man gets more good looking as he ages Second he is literally so passionate about his job and it shows. He is such a good lecturer and has such good energy!!! I loooveee profs like him, he has so much positivity and its acc so adorable how passionate he is about physics especially through his demonstrations. GOOATTT
I love Jason Harlow so much
Very kind professor, providing amazing lectures and many practice to prepare for the final. The workload is not small, but it is evenly distributed to weekly so students will not feel overwhelmed. The final is mainly based on the lecture notes and the weekly assignments and is very fair. Very enjoy this course, interesting contents and good prof.
Professor Harlow is fantastic! His lectures are incredibly clear and easy to follow, which makes learning actually enjoyable. On a completely unrelated note, he's very handsome as well. 10/10 would recommend.
