He really knows his stuff. Study your class notes and you'll do well on his tests.
Its a little hard to listen to the lecture and take notes from the projector at the same, but the tests are all about memorization, and everything you need is in your notes. Also, the reviews at the back of the book are pretty helpful.
jaosn was so funny and a good teacher. he kept class way interesting...my favorite professor by far
Understands material well... very helpful
Easy class, although the tests are a tiny bit difficult. There are some online discussion assignments that hurt my grade because I would forget to do them! But they are easy, if you remember. :) The class was interesting--he's an entertaining fellow.
I took this class distance ed. Jason was not helpful at all. I would e-mail him with questions and it took him forever to respond. Also, I pointed out a couple errors on his part in relation to exam questions and he did not take that very well. He thinks he is always right, which I proved to be incorrect. :)
I absolutely loved Leiker's class! He is such a strange man but totally entertaining. He really knows what he is talking about, and was always available to help. I thought the class material was really easy to understand and made the tests pretty breezy. I hope to take another class from him.
Class was awesome! Leiker is a funny professor. Exams were based almost entirely on the reading assignments, so as long as you did you reading you were good to go. Would recommend.
funny guy knows what he's doing. and oddly enough he knew my first name.
Very entertaining class. Not too difficult as long as you pay attention and attend class. He makes class interesting, entertaining lectures, interesting videos. Didn't buy the book, got an A but had to borrow the book on occasion. Study for the exams and the class is pretty easy.
Funny guy... probably said "and stuff like that" over 250 times in the semester. All you do in class is copy notes from power points, i feel like he doesn't teach anything he just reads power points but really cool guy. REally weird, but cool.
Basically go to class, copy his notes, and study for the test and you'll do fine. I did find SI helpful because there are some details that need extra attention. You do need to study from the book for the tests. Some questions are worded differently. He tests more about concepts then specifics. He is weird, but just go with it.
Not a hard class, but it does require effort. You have to read the book. He doesn't cover all book material in class but he'll test on it. Easy going guy. Weird, but funny.
Jason is super cool. His class was my favorite class by far. You should defiantly take his class its really easy and super fun! He is way down to earth and you can ask him questions if you are lost. His SI was my favorite though! She is way smart and was so helpful. Dani you are the bomb:) she helped me so much and her SI's were fun.
Pretty good teacher, hard to understand his thoughts. He loves to puts slides up and have you copy all the notes down. He know what he is talking about when it comes to the material. I would recommend taking a class from him.
Class is very easy if you show up for class and study for the test.
Excellent teacher. Hilarious but if your lazy you in trouble.
Excellent teacher. Hilarious but if your lazy you in trouble.
This teacher is my favorite teacher on campus. His lectures are entertaining and informational. His tests are of average difficulty. He usually adds 4-8 points to each test for bad questions. He is by far the most fair teacher I have had at USU. I will not say his class is easy, neither is it hard. It is extremely fair.
He has a sense of humor. He tries to make his lectures as entertaining as possible.
Leiker is one of my favorite teachers. He has a great sense of humor which makes class more entertaining. His teaching style is very straightforward, so you know what to expect on the test.
I would definitely suggest reading the book if you have time, but if not, just show up to class. He's really interesting to listen to and can be pretty funny, which makes class a lot more bearable. He'll tell you what to study for the tests, and you'll definitely want to study, but he makes the material interesting so it's easier.
This was one of the worst lecture classes I've had. On certain days, the class was fun, but mostly it was long and boring. Leiker is still old-fashioned and doesn't put his notes online, so one does need to attend every class period. Tests are largely based on notes.
He is really funny.
He's the man; nice, easy going, and funny. I considered his juv delinq class a bit difficult. You have to attend class because most information on exams come from his notes and student projects, but not so much the text book. I wish he would eliminate the student projects. Remember to give yourself ample time to study!!!
Dr. Leiker is the man; nice, funny, and easy going. The class is a bit difficult though. Attend class every day because the exams are mostly composed of class notes and boring student presentations, but not so much the text book. Pay attention to the class presentations cause they'll get you in the end- only thing I disliked about the class.
I absolutely loved Dr. Leiker's class! His stories are awkward and hilarious. He has a really dry sense of humor and it made class really fun. If you have an interest in the subject, you will definitely enjoy the class. I even quite liked the reading. I would definitely take another class from him.
Leiker is the bomb. When I first saw I was like aaaghh but he's cool and if you study you'll be just fine. Plus there's an extra credit opportunity at the end of the semester.
This class is not at all clean as to what we are learning. He is not a nice person and is very awkward. Will not look you in the Eyes weird and creepy
he's got a unique personality. you either love him or hate him. he's very real and factual. you get the grade you deserve, he is fair.
He is a good lecturer, and his class is fair. He expects you to be there and to read the book. It was a very good class.
Jason is an AMAZING teacher. He makes everything easy to learn and understand. He gives study guides for tests and quizzes are super easy. Very helpful, class isnt mandatory but he is old school and doesnt put notes online so if you dont go you dont get the notes, tests are based off of lecture and very lil book stuff.
He used a lot of examples to help explain concepts. the class is easy enough. You just have to listen, take notes, and read. The SIs were life savers
Very helpful, and funny. He keeps class entertaining, and truly wants you to succeed. Easy going, yet you learn a lot. His tests are based on his lectures, if you go to class and participate you will do well.
Best professor I have ever had. Super funny and used different means of teaching to keep things interesting
SI are live saver! He is a good teacher for this course and wants you to succeed but you have to do the work. Read the textbook, go to class, take notes, and it should be just fine! One of my favorite classes.
Very good! Interesting and easy to understand what is asked of you as a student. Highly recommend!
An amazing teacher. He keeps it interesting and is very helpful. The tests are decently hard but you get used to it.
I took Sociology online from Jason Leiker, and he was an extremely easy and informative instructor. I definitely recommend him to others.
Prof. Leiker is a good guy. His tests aren't hard because he basically gives you everything you need in the lecture. No trick questions. SI helps and so does reading your textbook.
This guy is a boss. Very easy. Interesting.
Jason is an extremely informative professor. His class was incredibly easy, and relied heavily on the textbook. The exams were also straight forward and easy.
I've had Jason Leiker as my professor for two classes so far, and his classes are definitely easy. As long as you read over the material, and keep up with the coursework, then you're definitely guaranteed an A.
Wow, best class of the year by far. He is really funny and his lectures are easy to get through. I never missed one, Go to SI and make sure you read. if you do those things the class will be fine and you will enjoy yourself.
Dr. Leiker is awesome! I am not "academically inclined", but I got a 95% in his class. READ THE BOOK, MEMORIZE THE CLASS LECTURE NOTES, GET AN A.
Leiker was my favorite professor this past semester. He is one hilarious guy. Class was fun and very straight forward. He gives you the notes you will need for the test basically word for word. If you go to the SI's, those are very helpful as well. He's a great teacher and I would definitely recommend him. I hope to take another class from him!
I absolutely loved this class! Lectures were always interesting and he knows how to keep students engaged. If you go to class , pay attention, read the book, and go to SI's you'll do well on the tests. He doesn't try to trick you- he wants you to succeed! Great professor and I learned a ton!
Awesome teacher!!! The best!!
If you pay attention to the lectures, you'll notice he has some pretty funny moments, otherwise you'll completely miss them. The exams are tough, but I've found that to be true in any deviance-based class. It's hard to know what to study, even with a study guide. We did a lot of group work with remote sites, and it was surprisingly enjoyable!
Leiker is a good lecturer, interesting and funny. Go to SI and it helps you understand and retain concepts better. You do have to read the textbook and study notes to do good on exams . Assignments aren't bad, and extra credit is offered to help boost your grade a little at the end. Definitely have to work for an "A". Great class!
This class is incredibly boring and I hope I pass just so I never have to take it again.
Funny teacher, very clear about expectations. Teaches material in a way that is engaging, I would definitely recommend taking his class if you are interested at all in sociology.
Tests are tough, but all around not that hard of a class.
Leiker's a great guy. He's sort of weird to be honest, but he's hilarious because of it. That being said the man gives great lectures. You honestly just have to take good notes at lectures and keep up decently with your readings and the class is a breeze.
This class was hands down my favorite class! You start out hating it but the SI's definitely helped and the reading wasn't necessary but he did throw in questions from the back of chapter review questions. Go to class because he doesn't post notes online. And study for your exams using notes from class AND the textbook.
Bottom line: I would take the course again from him.
He spends a lot of time talking about random stories, usually evolving his past as a shoe salesman at jcpennys. If you would actually like to learn, go to the SIs and read.
Great teacher, just goes on rants about topics that don't have anything to do with his lectures.
His class is easy if you listen to what he has to say. He basically tells you how to pass, there are SIs every week, which are very helpful. He is really funny, and a nice guy! His tests aren't bad as long as you go to class, take note, pay attention, and read. Basically be a college student.
Dr. Leiker definitely makes you work for your grade! The class was made easier as the material was very interesting, in my opinion. His SOI professor was so supportive as was Dr. Leiker. He always emailed me right back with any questions I may have had and he was very down to earth.
Dr. Leiker provided a fun learning environment. I didn't like the course, however. He spent a lot of time telling stories that didn't relate or going over the schedule; we didn't spend very much time in lecture/learning. Tests were difficult, but you can easily pass if you read the textbook and attend class. Quizzes are in class, make sure you go.
He a funny guy that's quirky, he has good lectures that relate back to his real life experiences. The class takes some work but it's not super hard nor super easy. There's not a whole lot of homework which is a plus. Overall a good class, you are going to want to show up so you don't the minor (and easy) quizzes. Lowest exam score drops!
There is an exam on every chapter. The tests were worded in a very confusing manner with answer choices often being too similar. Only one written paper, tough grader and gives no feedback.
He seemed like a jerk at first, but he ended up being really quirky and fun. His lectures are really interesting; He throws in personal past experiences to show how topics apply to real life. Take notes on everything he says, & do the readings in the book. I never went to an SI & you don't need the online access code. PS-Don't walk in front of him.
Professor Leiker was awesome! I'm a Sociology Major and having him as my first sociology professor made me excited about my path. He always acted serious but he would occasionally crack jokes and kept our attention. Read the book and study. It's unlikely that you can just take it and get a good grade, however the material isn't too difficult.
Leiker is so funny. He really cares about what he teaches, but he also cares about his students. Show up for class, and don't be late!
Easy class, if you attend. Attendance is 100% mandatory, as he gives in class assignments and half the tests are based off stuff we did in class. Other than that it's easy. Reading the chapters is not necessary, but reviewing the headings in the book before tests is.
Very fun class. He formats his tests in a way to boost your confidence with easy questions at the beginning and random no brainers. He is also very understanding and will give you personal advice on how you could study better depending on what you missed on your previous tests. Loved his class and would definitely recommend him.
Professor Leiker is a great teacher and has interesting lectures. I spent a lot of time reading his textbook and ended with an A in the class. Some students say that there is no reason to read the textbook, but from experience there are many questions on tests (we had 5 tests in the semester) that I wouldn't have gotten correct if I didn't read.
I felt that Professor Leiker was constantly trying to establish dominance over the class, even weeks into the semester. I didn't find him funny in any way. I also thought that his policy about missing a class was very harsh. He even said once that someone was getting married that day and he still told them they couldn't miss his class.
Best part of this course is the ability to work ahead.
Professor Leiker was great. He really did put students first and didn't have a pedestal or ego he was trying to uphold. Really nice and a very genuine guy and taught very clearly and wasn't vague about what he would be testing on. It's a class, you have to go and he often has quizzes randomly in class. But they are easy if you pay attention. Loved.
He was hilarious! But the tests and material was extremely hard!!
This guy is the worst teacher I've had in my whole life. He hasn't taught me a single thing. I never know what he is talking about, even though I take good notes and pay attention in class. He will just breeze through lessons and vocab like it is nothing, and never explains anything fully. His teaching makes no sense. I would not recommend him.
Lots of note taking, if you take good notes you will pass. Little to no homework in this class. Tests are a little harder than other classes.
Leiker is a good teacher... when is comes to lecturing. He knows his stuff and teaches it in a great way. However, his tests are extremely hard. He words things in ways that are not easy to see what he is asking. I went into every test having read the book and memorized my notes completely and would still only get 80's on his tests.
The best professor I have ever had! He is funny! If you take good notes, you will pass the class.
"Meh" for lack of a better word. Decent guy, but tests are based primarily off of lecture notes and they are kind of all over the place. Clear that the success of his students isn't the number one priority. Go to SI and read the book and you'll be fine
Professor Leiker is awesome! He goes on rants sometimes, but they help you remember the material by relating it back to everyday life. You need to study a little bit before the test, but usually you can find the flashcards on Quizlet. I bought a $120 textbook and opened it twice. There are questions about the textbook on the tests, but only a few.
Easy assignments, easy to pass if you browse the chapter ten minutes before the test
The assigned readings in the text did not help with class very much. The lectures were unorganized and he always refered to the same examples, which never really made much sense to me. Over all the class was easy enough. I do not recomend this professor. He wanted us to watch that was an "educational documentary", it was extremely explicit/graphic.
Dr Leiker is engaging has fun activities and cares for your success. However, the syllabus does not have any test dates, quiz dates or due dates you usually dont know when any of them are until 3 days before. When it comes to tests he'll give a guide but not everything on there is useful and somethings that arent on the guide or lectures at all.
Very nice guy who cares about his student's success. If you go to SI's, study the textbook material, and seek extra help in office hours to pick up on patterns of things your missing, you'll do great.
The professor was funny--tried to keep lectures interesting. Read your textbook and take good lecture notes. Many test questions are true to false "As discussed in class lecture..."
Leiker is a really good lecturer, 10/10! He's funny, and he shares a lot of personal life stories that relate really well to concepts that would otherwise be really boring and confusing. Come to class, take decent notes, and you'll pass. Don't buy the textbook; I haven't opened it. 90% of the tests are on lecture material. (explaining my A-)...
I enjoyed Leiker. His tests are super hard and he tests a lot out of the textbook. If you miss the lecture notes, you aren't going to pass his tests. He has random quizzes that as long as you go to class, they add up to be an easy 90 points in the end. He posts a clear study guide before each exam, study that and you will do fine! Lots of notes.
Professor Leiker is excellent at teaching sociology, reading is mandatory to do excellent, and SI helped a ton. I would highly suggest taking this class, not only is it intriguing, but Professor Leiker makes learning fun.
I took this online. I didn't like the set up at all. Read, take a quiz, take a test. That was it. All but one of tests that had to be taken at the testing center or using Proctorio which I felt like was excessive. Tests were harder than I would expect out of a 1010 class.
Jason is a great professor, I've taken multiple classes from him. This class is the same set up as his other online classes, so get ready to read. Pay attention to the reading material through the semester, it's heavier than most other classes in content.
Overall I like this professor. It is a lot of reading but it's not too bad. The tests are a little difficult you have to really know the definitions and put them into situations. There were also a couple group projects but those were fun. He doesn't put his slides online so you have to go to the lectures.
Jason is a fun professor who keeps lectures engaging by relating material to your actual life and life around you. If you go to class and take notes and read your text, you'll have no problem at all in this class. The SI sessions are super helpful too, especially right before exams. I would take this class again!
Prof. Leiker is kinda funny. He tells really engaging personal stories about the material he is lecturing about; I always loved attending class. The tests get harder with each one until the final--the final was as easy as the first test. I would recommend focusing on tests 1 and 4. Tests 2 and 3 are ridiculous. Fairly easy A.
Professor Leiker is knowledgeable, really cares about his students, and a great professor.
Leiker is a great choice for Soc 1010. There are pop quizzes throughout the semester but you are graded for participation only. He is very clear with expectations for quizzes and tests. Good at reminding about the course schedule. Read text for exams to do well. Great lectures and if you simply go and follow his instructions you'll do great.
SOC1010 Was one of my favorite classes. The exams are the most important thing. No homework. SIs are great
Literally so boring. I could not stay awake in his class and could never understand what he was saying because he goes off on tangents. Quizzes are super easy and graded on participation but if you miss a quiz you get a zero. He drops one quiz and one of the first three tests.
Leiker is a good professor. The class is easy as long as you take good notes and READ the material! He also posts a study guide a couple of days before the tests so you can make sure you've studied what will most likely be on the test.
He is a funny professor and makes the lectures interesting. The tests can be hard, but just take good notes and read the book. The SI sessions are really helpful too. The quizzes are only participation based so you have to attend class. He doesn't post lecture slides so notes are super important.
He is a really great professor. Tests are fairly easy, best to go to class every time. Lectures are interesting. He gives random assignments sometimes which is why you should show up to class, but they are always easy and fast. He is funny. Tests are very much based on the textbook, BUT the textbook is very interesting and easy to read!
DO NOT BUY THE MINDTAP access code for this course- only need the book. Leiker is a nice guy who tries to make class entertaining. He doesn't post the slides online, so you need to go to class. He puts some random questions (very specific numbers from data sets) on the test but usually will curve it up a few points. His Canvas is unorganized.
Really enjoyed his class. It's lecture-style with tons of students, but don't skip! You have to read the chapters in the textbook but it isn't awful. SI sessions are a must.
He wasn't terrible but... He tells very repetitive stories that are sometimes on his tests. You NEVER have homework. You use the textbook for 2 in-class assignments and a little bit on the test. The SI for his class was very helpful and studying for the test was hard. Do the extra credit at the end! VERY CONFUSING LECTURES
test are very hard and 6 in class quizzes that are random very easy quizzes but you need to show up
Would not recommend. The professor completely avoids talking about any relevant contentious issues which sociology best sheds light on; the course is essentially a guided reading of a tame 101 textbook // Good grades are achieved not by critical thinking but by close reading and memorization. // Attendance is required but it's mostly just jokes
A good professor. He makes class interesting. Make sure to study for exams or you won't pass.
Tough grader and not the friendliest person on earth but a good professor. You will learn a lot if you put in any effort.
Good professor. Very easy to follow along in his lessons but you have to do a lot of studying. Very test heavy so if you're not a good test taker I would not recommend you take his courses. I've learned a lot this semester.
Dr. Leiker does not care about his students or his job. Each day he shows up to class complaining about responsibilities and other school related items. He is very hard to communicate with or talk to. He gets very upset very easily and is the most difficult professor Ive ever had to work with. He does not care about students success.
Prof. Leiker was very fun. He was funny and nice and made the lectures interesting. You have group projects but they are incredibly easy. Tests can be a buttkicker sometimes but just study. You could probably get away with not buying the book. There are a few book test questions but that's it. He doesn't take roll.
I am not sure what to say other than I loved this class. The lectures are awesome. Show up, do the work, you will pass with a great great grade. All of my questions were answered almost immediately, my grades were always current, nothing ever pended. Discussions were awesome and sometimes you forgot which one was the professor's comment. AWESOM
Jason is hilarious. He really keeps your attention and the lectures are great. Tests are worth most of the grade, but he drops the lowest one. If you skim the textbook and take notes in lecture you'll pass. Study and go to SI and you'll get an A. He's crystal clear on expectations, grades, and I never had a question that wasn't answered in syllabus
He is one of the funniest prof. that I've had in college. He is so knowledgeable about the material. He is very clear about what he expects of each student, but is willing to work with you. Pay attention to the lectures, skim the text book, GO TO SI and you'll do great!
Loved this class! Dr. Leiker is hilarious and obviously cares about his class and his students. There are 3 tests (1 gets dropped), a 'final,' and some activities throughout the semester, never any hw. I was expecting it to be way harder than it was but as long as you take notes during the lectures, go to SI and study, the tests are easy A's.
Jason is a funny guy but doesn't deal with any crap. He can be blunt at times. If you want to pass the class goes to the SI sessions. That the best advice I can give you, GO TO THE SI SESSIONS!
Funny professor, makes lectures entertaining. Tests aren't easy but will be if you study. Go to SI if it's provided. Read the textbook. Attending lectures makes it more likely you will get good grades on tests, and he does random little projects throughout the semester. I liked the course, would take it again.
I would recommend this class. Prof. Leiker is hilarious and loves to throw dad jokes into the lectures. He does do random group projects, but drops one grade. Attendance isnt mandatory but I recommend to go cause he will give you random extra credit.
I actually had to look to find out what this professor's name is. He sent out announcements but really you just read and take some quizzes/tests. Text is interesting, and he gives you a good guide for each chapter. I wish he would've actually taught though. It would've been cool to hear his insights.
The group projects are easy, just make sure you are in class to get credit. The tests can be hard, but if you study and GO TO SI SESSIONS they won't be that bad. Jason seems intimidating at first but if you email or go see him in his office hours he is very understanding and caring, but he is very blunt and will tell you how it is.
He does not care about his students or teaching. Honestly, I can tell he's not here at USU for the right reasons. He has never made an effort to help his students and leaves all the work to his TAs who have expressed that he doesn't help them either. He does not deserve to be a college professor and shouldn't be teaching
This class is really difficult if you are taking it online. There are no lectures given by the professors so sometimes it is hard to know what you need to study. You need to read all of the chapters and it is very test heavy.
The worst professor I've ever had at Utah State. He did not teach this class, I taught myself. I felt nervous about the study resources for the final so I reached out and he emailed that he felt the "resources" he had given us were fine. Terrible professor, this class must've been a breeze for him to "teach".
Don't take SOC1010 for a general!! The online format of this class sucks. You teach yourself everything and the professor literally doesn't do anything. You read a 600 page textbook that is very dull throughout the semester and take tests and quizzes on the stuff in the book. I hated this class & dreaded reading the book.
Worst professor I have ever had. I am a straight A student and I struggled in this class. Not once did this professor actually teach and there are seriously 10 PROCTORED exams for this class. Also, the exams are on random things that the average student would not retain. Do not take this class, you will regret taking it.
Took Professor Leiker for SOC 1010 and SOC 3420 in the same semester. BIG MISTAKE, about 20 exams between both classes, fully proctured, no notes allowed. He does not upload lectures, he told me I am expected to spend 10 hrs a week reading the book. Cool guy but do not recommend unless you want to teach yourself a whole course.
Took Professor Leiker for SOC 1010 and SOC 3420 in the same semester. BIG MISTAKE, about 20 exams between both classes, fully proctoured, no notes allowed. There is no SI, you have no help and need to teach yourself. Took me failing 4 exams to learn how to manage a B/C. USE THE ONLINE BOOK, they have quizzes that helped. Refer to past quizzes also.
Took the online SOC3420 class from Professor Leiker. Super clear with what he expects, super good at getting back to you when you have questions. LOTS of tests. Test for every combined two units; 7 overall and a final... also quizzes for every chapter. All tests are proctored and closed book. Tests are difficult, require very good memory and recall
This class was all online so I didn't have much interaction but he seems like a really nice guy and a cool dude. You read the whole textbook so you definilty need that and the tests aren't too bad but you will want to study for them for sure.
While taking this course, students are expected to teach themselves everything. There are way too many exams and you arent even able to see the questions you get wrong. Also, to have students read an entire textbook themselves and not allow them to use notes on exams is one of the worst things you could do.
The class is entirely online and the teacher doesn't provide any lectures. The only way you learn the material is by reading the chapters. I did not feel that the tests were difficult as I did the readings but there is a lot of them. I emailed the teacher once the entire semester and never received a response.
WORST professor at USU. He is dishonest and lazy. In his syllabus it states that he will drop your lowest test score. He DID NOT follow through on this resulting in dropping my grade instead of helping it. I talked to other classmates and they had the same problem. Avoid talking him at all costs.
utah state needs to seriously reconsider his employment at the university. there were 10 EXAMS for this class. it is a generals class and he treats it like a graduate class but never shows up. never saw his face or heard him teach one lecture. worst part is that he randomly dropped everyones grade at the end and blocked our ability to see why
I think I sent this man 15 emails and he never responded. EVIL. Does not care about you learning stuff only retaining info. Tests were easy if you studied. I ended with a a 92% and I worked so hard for it. Got an A on almost all my exams and still couldnt get an A in the class. This class hurt me mentally
I wouldn't recommend taking any class from this professor - especially if you take it online. He made you do everything, we read the book then took quizzes and exams. The only think he provided for you was the quizzes. Honestly, Leiker was lazy and doesn't really care about you. I sent him multiple emails and got rude responses.
Leiker does not teach anything. There were no lectures, just an expectation to read every chapter and take a test over every 2 chapters. Only reason I got an A is because I found a quizlet with the literal test questions and answers. Total of 8 tests and 7 quizzes. If you're taking this class as an elective.... don't.
This class was fully online (not even zoom), I knew that would be the case when I registered for it! 8 modules- you read 2-3 chapters of the textbook, take an open book quiz on each chapter, and then a test on the module. The final is comprehensive but split into two tests. Tests are very easy if you do the readings and take the quizzes. Good class
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM PROFESSOR LEIKER. I took both SOC 1010 and SOC 3420 this last semester because the classes sounded interesting and I was considering a sociology minor. Huge mistake. The material was interesting, but I hated the format of the courses. Good luck memorizing the textbook -- that is all you do. Leiker should not be a professor
But theres not a single lecture video and I think I heard from him 3 times through the semester. He does have powerpoints you can look through for each chapter, which are helpful. But you really do teach yourself from the textbook. 7 exams and final exam all from a testing center, quizzes for each chapter you can do from home. Don't love Leiker
The entire class consists of reading the book and taking quizzes. After a couple chapters, you take an exam. My biggest problem was that Leiker never provided any real resources, and he required us to go to the testing center for the 8 module exams. He has lots of helpful TA's, but they could have ran the course without him.
There are so my quizzes and tests, You basically have to memorize the textbook to pass the class and it's really frustrating. I thought the class was interesting itself I just didn't like how it was "taught," I barely heard from the professor, no video lectures or SI's, just the textbook.
Everyone who claims hes a good professor has said Go to SI because he doesnt teach you anything supplemental instructors do more than this dude. What is Utah state paying this dude for ? He literally does not interact with you the entire time you take his course and give 10 proctored exams ? Worst professor in all of my college experience
Most of your grade is exams. Exams are closed booked and monitored. The tests are rough and will drop your grade like crazy. He has almost 0 interaction with the class. He has 0 lectures and that makes the tests even harder. I hate his classes, but I keep getting stuck with them because they are required. I dread his classes.
All in all, I can't whine too much. He always got back to me when I emailed him and he gave clear structure to his grading criteria. But, I think that taking ELEVEN proctored tests over an online intro class just felt excessive. You HAD to go to the testing center too. It just felt like a lot, but I'm sure it's better in person.
i didnt take the course but this man requires every quiz is taken in the testing center and his syllabus is like 20 pages long which is not cool bro
He expects you to spend 10 hours a week for an INTRO class. Plus 10 exams that are proctored. Worst professor. Don't take his class, it's a mistake.
I was sooo excited to take this class but it was awful. His lectures are a joke. He hardly talks about the material-gets soo off topic. The tests are SO hard and barely correlate to the lecture slides. If you don't read the textbook you're screwed. Wish there was a better program for such an awesome topic to study. BIG thumbs down from me
The was my most difficult class. Tests were very hard, but he gives second chances to take them again. Lot of in class activities that go toward attendance as well. He teaches from his own PowerPoints, but also expects you to know information from the book, so reading the book is mandatory.
Had him for criminology. He has the HARDEST tests I have taken in college. Tests are in a testing center, 50 minutes, 60 questions, you take them twice, he averages your score & you cant see what you got wrong. As a 4.0 student I studied 10+ hours for his tests, the best score I got was a B+. Class attendance is mandatory or your grade will suffer.
I have taken 2 classes from Professor Leiker, soc1010 and soc3420. Both were online. You only read from the textbook, there are no online lectures that are posted. The tests are difficult as well. In SOC1010 I believe there were 7 exams and 2 part final all in the testing center, and soc3420 has 6 in testing center exams. He does adapt to issues.
I am in my 3rd semester and he is the most confusing professor I've ever had. Lectures make no sense, and you're expected to remember random things from the textbook. If you don't do really well on the tests, good luck getting a good grade in the class. There are very few assignments. You'll be teaching yourself unless you have a background in soc.
This class was amazing and I learned so much from it! You definitely need to read the textbook (which is online) and study lots! But very possible to pass with a good grade as long as you put in effort!
Its very frustrating to have a professor who gives less than the bare minimum but gets so upset when you do the same thing.
Literally I worked so hard for this stupid class to pull out a C. The professor was unhelpful when I asked him for help and he really just did not care about the class and it showed. He did not teach and just basically told me that I was not trying hard enough not true because literally put more time in this class then my senior research class.
This guy was the WORST. I am so confused how he still works at USU unless tenured. But if he is he shows it. Literally does not care about his students at all!!!!! I had to take his class as he is the only one who teaches it but he made me consider dropping my minor
Doesn't let you see his slides with notes outside of class. Doesn't cover a lot of information on exams and they're almost the only assignments so they impact your grade heavily. He gets very side tracked during his lectures and doesn't explain what the slides mean.
I took the online class, there was a test every other week, and we had an online textbook, he made it clear that each chapter would take 2.5 hours of reading and each test it 3 chapters. it is a lot of work especially since the whole grade is just a test. the test was tough, the only good thing is you can take them 2 times. also not nice.
This is by far the worst college class I have taken. Super test heavy. There are 7 exams all taken inside the testing center. A tiny none helpful study guide. 7 1-page essays are only worth 20 points. If you don't do well on the exams you won't do well in the class. Professor took a lot of time to respond to my emails.
The whole semester was just taking tests on the information from the textbook. Jason didn't give any supplemental materials or information. He didn't even give comprehensive study guides for the 7 tests. He is nice, but don't expect to walk away from this course having learned a lot about criminology.
This class wasn't too bad if you're good at studying. The exams are based on both textbook readings and lectures, so it is important to participate in both. There are a lot of group assignments, so I would recommend finding some good friends in the class. Honestly Professor Leiker is not a bad teacher, he's just not a very nice person.
The start of the semester I was very angry/frustrated towards this class as I failing every test after studying for hours. Plus the tests are designed to trick you. But towards the end I think it got better and I was able to figure out what works and what he was looking for. I definitely spent the most of my time on this class.
Fun lectures, difficult tests. There's four exams, the final one is cumulative, but all four have two attempts. His lectures barely scratch the surface of the units-you'll have to really read & review the online textbook to have a shot at getting a good grade on the exams. There are a handful of in class activities, & one group project-all easy.
He provided no instructional material, just had you read the textbook. Some kind of bot could have taught this better since a bot would actually make the tests available. Tests were sent to the testing center randomly and sometimes after the initial due date, so it was impossible to manage my time studying. No idea why he is still employed by USU
VERY textbook heavy. The textbook is the only material he gives. After asking him for suggestions on improving my test scores, he impudently cursed at me several times, telling me how incompetent I was, and told me to spend an ADDITIONAL 3 hours in the textbook a week. Not worth your time. As a *former* 4.0 student, I HIGHLY discourage this class.
Do not bother taking this class unless you want a headache. I took his Intro to Sociology class and it was manageable. I'm in two of his classes this semester and I'm feeling like I'm going to drop out of college. He has you learn two chapters for each test and you have to take a test every week or two. No notes are allowed and the assignments suck
Don't take this class unless you want to consider becoming a college dropout. I've emailed him before and he's never responded. Also he has you learn two chapters for a test and you take a test every two weeks. All you do is read. I'm taking two of his classes at once and I have a test every single week. How are we actually supposed to learn?
Exam heavy, can read for 5 hrs and study for another 5 hrs but the tests are designed to trick you. I attended class, took detailed notes, did all the reading, and studied EXTENSIVELY for an A. Never responds to emails, inflexible, overall mean guy. Sad bc him teaching 1010 is v discouraging for soc majors. Sociology is great, take Christy Glass!!
I took two of this professor's classes online and they were both awful! The only thing I could do for credit was take tests. 11 tests and for half of the semester I only had access to 1 of them. DO NOT take an online class from him!
This professor was very tough. He wasn't as respectful or understanding as other teachers. His exams are extremely challenging and don't fit the study guides very well. All I'm saying is be ready to read for hours in the textbook and don't expect a good grade.
Meh he was alright, I liked the dude decently. He's my type of humor, but I see why other students don't like him. He was terrible at explaining what to do in class activities, often contradicting himself. His study guides weren't really helpful, exams are designed differently and often trick you. Expect a LOT of reading.
Overall, I thought he was very engaging and was pretty funny. At times, I was confused with the directions on his assignments, and there was a lot of group work. Also, I recommend taking pictures of the lecture slides because he usually doesn't post them on Canvas and read the textbook because he puts a lot of the material from there on his exams.
I would recommend NOT taking this class if you're a bad test taker. Your grade is your test score, and the tests are meant to trick you. I felt like he did not teach in class, and he relied on the textbook. I spent HOURS studying just to get a grade that did not reflect the amount of work I put into studying.
I have almost taken a class from this man several times. Every time I try and give him another shot, I realize he is just one of "those professors". It's insane that I can take this class from a different professor and have a 50$ textbook, that for his class the same textbook is 90$ and has a college fee attached to it, making it 210$. Do Not Take
He's a really great professor, but he does try and scare ya in the beginning. As long as you read the textbook and come to class you'll get an A. The exam's aren't that hard as long as you just listen and read what you need to read. He's entertaining to listen to and overall a really good lecturer. And the course is super interesting as well.
Some group stuff in class, but really good teacher, funny, helps and wants you to succeed.
This class does require you to work hard. But it is a very interesting subject and you will get out of it what you put into it.
If you enjoy deciphering hieroglyphics more than understanding his lectures, this is your golden ticket. His exams make ancient riddles seem straightforward. Take this class if you want an extreme headache all semester, but don't forget to bring a map and a compass.
Leiker doesn't require attendance but he doesn't post lecture slides (which have content that pops up on tests). He takes 20 minute tangents about his personal life and doesn't elaborate on the topics in lecture, which is frustrating. The tests are designed to be tricky, even if you've studied/read a ton, and the study guides are basically useless.
His lectures are ok, you have to go to them or get the notes somehow and study them well. A lot of just memorizing. But even if you feel like you've memorized everything the tests are still so hard. In class assignments for credit about a third of the time. Funny guy though, but wouldn't take his classes again.
The exams that I took up until the fourth exam went smoothly. The way he has his canvas page formatted though is hard to read. He made his exams available until the 30th on usu testing center page, and that's when I had my fourth exam schedules. He closed the course before then so I failed the course and now I gotta spend another $1000 to retake it
This class was easy if you studied the textbooks and lectures throughly. Professor responds promptly to emails and has an awesome late policy.
He makes you take proctored exams every single week worth lots of points. He doesn't want you to do them w proctorio at home, but expects you to do them every week. If you do take them at home, he has a long list of rules. His class is very reading/study heavy and takes awhile to get things graded. He does extra credit though.
Leiker's class is tough, but engaging if you put in the work. Lectures can be hit-or-miss, but study tools like the textbook and Unstuckstudy are a big help. Overall, the class is rewarding if you're willing to grind.
not too bad just have to pay attention and put in the work
Had 4 exams that were basically our entire grade, but if you read the textbook, attend lecture, and study you'll be fine. Funny guy, enjoyed going to class. Would recommend.
He is a stubborn, opinionated guy, but if you go to his office hours and get to know him, he is actually super chill. I started out reading the textbook but reviewing the vocab at the end of the chapters and going to the SI sessions will help more than reading tbh. Its a lot of new info and memorization so you have to go to class.
He gatekeeps his lecture slides so the only way you can get them is by going to class. Lectures are usually surface-level, with lots of irrelevant tangents. If you go to class and read the textbook (which is very dense) you'll do ok in this class. Overall wouldn't recommend him as a teacher, he comes across as cocky/arrogant but also kinda funny.
Read the textbook!! If you do not read the textbook then you will not get a good grade in this class. His tests are super hard unless you read the textbook and even then they are still hard. But besides that all of his other assignments were easy and I enjoyed his lectures.
I really liked Jason. He was very easy to work with and it was easy to make things up if you told him before hand. Most of the class is just reading from the text book, taking quizzes then taking the module test. I stopped reading straight from the textbook and just took notes on the overviews on canvas then expanded as needed after the quiz.
He sure loves to talk about himself lol, the exams were so confusing because he would use random huge words to make it so confusing. Or I'm just slow idk but I didn't like this class because he made no sense half the time
This class is great if you're good at textbook reading and tests. I'd study for 6 hours and still get bad grades. The instructor doesn't show wrong answers after tests. The timed essays were awful, and Pearson Revel had no page numbers. I hated this class, it only caters to one learning style.
There is no reason for this professor to make this introduction course so difficult. Way too much reading and too many tests. Who still requires proctored tests to be taken on-site? Just too much information and little resources and the tests often don't reflect what was taught in the text book. Complete waste of time on an introduction course.
Much of the negative, as well as the positive is true. My biggest gripe was that his exams were intentionally difficult. He makes questions "Tricky" so it's easier to quantify actual learning. Frankly, you get out of this class what you put in. It's not his fault you did poorly... but he is a tough teacher.
Amazing man and keeps me interested with the lectures as he relates his personal experiences to it.
Very rude. Class is very book heavy and you cannot do anything without spending hours upon hours reading it. He makes it clear that he expects us to spend 2-3 hours on this which obviously is inconvenient with other obligations (classes, work, etc.). Take this course if you have nothing else to do with your time because it's all you will be doing.
College requires effort. The people complaining about him here are those who didn't want to work. This will be my second class I've taken of his. Leiker cares and does engage, but you get out what you put in. I came out feeling like a sociology expert. Effort matters. Just work hard. He's one of the best, but you have to give your best.
