He's a good teacher and such a nice guy too. He give out 3 or 4 assignment during the semester. He actually help a student out instead of trying to make it hard for them. All his assignments are pretty easy. If you do all the assignment, them im sure u'll pass with at least a B.
Mr. Lira is a wonderful teacher and he is highly recommended. There wasn't an unhappy student in the class. He does more than he can to help the students in his class and will do the same for you. If you want an interactive learning class and want to have fun and still learn take this course.
man i love this guy, he's awesome. i highly recommend him. Such a nice guy.
Lira is an awesome teacher, my favorite english teacher that I have ever had! He is open minded and really tries to stretch his students acidemically. I loved english after his class. Highly recomended. :-)
Great professor, he's a real down to earth kind of guy. His essays aren't hard at all. Discusses real topics in his class. I would highly recommend his class.
Mr. Lira is a GREAT teacher. Probably my favorite that I have ever had. The class discussion was great, the 3 main assignments he gave us were interesting and fun, and his grading was extremely fair. He makes the learning experience enjoyable whether you love english or not. TAKE HIS CLASS!
Loved his class, even though there was a little more political discussion than I would have liked to sit through-not my cup of tea. But other than that, Lira is officially my new favorite professor.
He is a great teacher and if you ever dont understand something he will help you at all costs. He is very clear and likes to have the class discussion. Interesting class. Like someone else said he does like the politics, but it adds some good debates. Take him if you can.
Mr. Lira is a great teacher. The assignments he wants you to write on are very interesting and easy to write about. Class was wonderful. I actually enjoyed coming to class every week b/c I knew I'd learn something - & not just about English. Take him!!!
TAKE THIS CLASS!! English teachers tend to be pretty cool and liberal, but Mr. Lira is the BEST. Class was fun and interesting and consisted mostly of discussion. I got an A.
Mr. Lira was an awesome teacher...I took him for both Eng. 111 and 112 you do however write a few paper but they are totally cool topics. We really didnt use the book in 111 but we did however used it some in 112. Awesome teacher
This teacher is good. At the beginning I was a little annoyed because he talks about other stuff in class and I wanted to know more about ENG cause it's my second language. But overall great teacher, got an A, fairly easy. He's good and easygoing.
He was amazing! Participate in class discussions and do the assignments. I always looked forward to this class.
Do not take this teacher as a) an online teacher and b) for 242. He did not go by the syllabus, graded at a snails pace and even slower in returning assignments, his grading scales made no sense on the syllabus, and did not offer any helpful advice, just criticism. I do not and will never recommend this teacher to anyone.
One of the best English teachers at Reynolds. Paper topics are creative and usually fun. We wrote papers, but not too many. Class is mostly based on discussions and reading from the textbook. Is late returning assignments, but grades fairly. Is not obsessed with students being to class on time, but you need to go still.
Took for English Composition last Summer. Rarely used book and class consisted of discussing political issues/current events (if you do not like this, do not take him). Despite being very liberal, mostly open to opposing points of view (he would challenge opinion, but not hold it against you). Very slow at grading.
HE IS A VERY GOOD PROFESSOR AND HE IS ALWAYS ABLE TO HELP THE STUDENTS,LISTEN TO STUDENT A LOT AND VEY HELPFUL.LIKES TO DISCUSSED ABOUT THE TOPIC.TAKE THE CLASS WITH HIM.HE IS VERY GOOD
I thought he was very helpful teacher. He was able to answer my questions inside and outside the classroom. However, I thought he was a very liberal opinionated person. I do not think he agrees with other ideas. Still, I thought he was a decent enough instructor.
I love this professor. Easy going, easy to get along with, clear and concise with his lessons and expectations.
Great teacher and had some great discussions in class.
Lira is an interesting professor. Make sure your full attention is on him; he HATES cellphones! He lectures almost every class period, the book isn't really needed. He shows people that it's okay to have an opinion, and he loves hearing other student's opinions. Also loves debates and debating. Assignments are very easy and fun. Take him if you can
He is the best English teacher I've ever had:)
I have taken ENG 112 and ENG 251 from J. Lira. He is, by far, the most interesting teacher I have encountered thus far at JSR. He loves to read. He loves to read research papers. His expectations are crystal clear. Helpful Hints: Do NOT talk over him, or other students who have the floor. It's rude~ Also, no texting during class! J. Lira is GREAT!
Informative, sometimes off topic, clear point of what he expected, nervous/excited energy at times. After being out of school for 25 yrs, his help was very useful. I would take another one of his classes.
Very knowledgable. VERY KNOWLEGEABLE. Expects a lot of effort on your part- no more than he should. Would let the class get off track with students who thought they should teach the class, but otherwise a great teacher.
He is a GREAT teacher! Very helpful, and always puts a fun spin on his assignments. He is a bit slow grading, but that's the only complaint I have. I took his online class, and it was one of the best I've ever taken!
Mr. Lira is an excellent teacher in many respects. He is not only passionate about the subject, he is very passionate about teaching critical thinking. If you want a teacher that will challenge you to think, and give you an unforgettable learning experience, take his class.
By far the BEST PROFFESSOR AT J. SARGE! i HAVE LEARNED SOOOO MUCH FROM TAKING HIS CLASS. HE CARES FOR THE STUDENS HE CARES ABOUT THE SUBJECT AND HE WANTS TO SEE EVERY STUDENT SUCCEED! TAKE HIM HE IS AWESOME!!
Best english teacher on the planet, really knows what he's talking about and knows how to explain it well to the class. You will not regret taking his course. Funny and makes class worth it!
Love Love Love Professor Lira. He is the best teacher I've had in my entire life and I'm not that young.. I looked forward to attending his class every week and he's very knowledgeable. I wish I could have him as my professor in every subject. I highly recommend him for any English class :)
Professor Lira was an exellent instructor. He has great passion and enthusiasm. He makes class light and fun while covering the material. He is one of favorites without question.
Awesome teacher. He's a cutie who gets really excited about mythology.
loved him, super cute and super clear. he is the best english teacher i have literally ever had.
Absolutely one of the best teachers there! He always helps when you have any questions or concerns and will work with you if an assignment needs to be turned in late. If he isn't going to attend class he lets you know plenty of time in advance when possible.
If you have no job, no life, no kids, no boyfriend, and 28 hours every single day to devote to reading the most confusing upsidedown backwards nonesense (and then read it for nothing cuz he goes over less than half of what he assigns and the stories he does go over, he mixes up the details and gets whole parts wrong) then BY ALL MEANS take his clas
Lyra is by far the best teacher i have ever had. He is willing to meet almost ant time to help you or even revise a paper in its draft form for any class! He does go off on tangents but makes up with it by finishing and going back to the material (ask about bowling in a bath robe). I HIGHLY recommend him for freshman collage English! :)
He is so passionate about literature, he will make the hardest reading understandable. Just read at home, get a general understand even if you are so confused, go to class and he will put it in terms you understand. He hardly ever took roll and doesn't know alot of names, we used book every week. He has some great stories.
This instructor, professor Lira, is a great English professor. If you pay attention in his class and adhere to his syllabus inside and outside of the classroom, you learn a lot from him. He did not require many textbox assignments, rather he would refer you to the textbook from time to time.
His class was to personal in nature. I felt like a nerd. being taught my a nerd.
This was a super easy class, not a lot of writing, TONS of reading. He taught it more like a comprehension course and not a literature course. I did enjoy reading Moby Dick, but felt he missed a lot of what could have been taken away from the text.
Mr. Lira is great. He makes the material interesting and relatable, which is a feat when the material in question is millennia-old, opaquely-written Babylonian myth. I thoroughly enjoyed the class and learned a ton. Class participation is key and he doesn't accept late work. Show up, make the effort, and you'll be rewarded.
Lira is very passionate and goes above and beyond to help students who put forth effort. A lot of the time it didn't even feel like a class so much as just a group of like minded friends hanging out and talking about what excites us.Read what he assigns and you'll be stimulated. Also, he's a pretty attractive little man.Which you know, helps.
Great professor, gives good feedback on essays and gives help for final essay. The class is more conversation driven, no notes unless he specifically say its important. Lots of analyzing short stories and videos. Overall an easy A.
If you have no life but to read, he's the one for you. No quizzes unless he feels that nobody read the material than he'll quiz the class. Journal entries are assigned but they are pretty easy. Only assigns three papers. Presentation on a topic from you is optional but it's an easy 100. If he gets done teaching, he cancels Friday classes
YOU READ A LOT! Papers aren't too hard and he's a pretty cool guy.
Good sense of humor, grades fair, offers a chance for extra credit. Lots of reading and writing, gives plenty of time to complete it every week. Pop quizzes if students are not doing reading assignments & he can tell . Read you chapters, do your papers, and participate in class discussion about the weeks reading assignment and you will get an A.
Great Teacher had him for ENG 241. A lot of reading that you have to do but for the most part real short stories you can even get by, by not reading a lot of them. Discussions every class and will have a few quizzes if he thinks people are not reading. Papers are not hard at all and his presentation that you have to do is a easy 100. Take him!!
Prof. Lira is awesome!!!!! i took him for English 112, i normally hate English but he made it fun. only had 4 assignments the whole semester. assignments were easy. i would definitely take him again. only used the textbook once.
Brilliant professor! He is always welcoming and considerate of everyone's input and really guides you through the readings. Definitely read for the class if you want to do well, it's not that much if spaced out. No tests, just papers. I feel like I learned a ton in the class. I would definitely take again.
Professor Lira is amazing! His lectures are really interesting and insightful! He helps his students as much as he can and it's not hard to do well in his class. to the people saying that he assigned to many papers: you took a 5 week crammed summer course! of course there will be a lot of papers. What do you expect? it is college. He is great!
Professor Lira is probably one of the BEST English teachers J sargeant Reynolds has. He knows what he is doing and his lectures are really entertaining and interesting. Also, he is really funny and it makes the class go by fast. I LOVED his class!! I definitely recommend him! He makes English and literature fun!
Professor Lira is the BEST English professor at Reynolds! Be ready to read and discuss the readings in class. If the class doesn't participate (or he feels like no one has read the material) he will give out quizzes. He's really nice and pretty funny in a nerdy way.
Professor Lira is a great teacher who enables students to understand the mentality of all the authors. There are three papers, quizzes, and a presentation. One must always read the material, take notes on every detail, and ask questions.
Closest thing to a University Professor you will find at the Comm College level. A little unconventional but engaging and incredibly intelligent. I had absolutely zero interest in literature and Lira turned that around. Very thought provoking class and discussions. Took both 241 + 251 and would highly recommend. My favorite professor and classes
Great class. You can tell he really enjoys what he is teaching. Would take this professor again given the opportunity.
This class was very easy, just read the assigned readings and discuss them in class. No tests or quizzes. There is one presentation and a few essays.
Class wasn't really that bad, he is kind of a tough grader. Didn't really respond to E-mails but he was funny. You'll pass if you come to class and do as told.
Took him for both Eng 111 and 112. His classes fill up fast so don't hesitate. Gives great feedback on papers and the opportunity to make corrections before final paper is due, fun and interesting lectures. Thank you to the person that helped me register for classes last semester; for knowing how awesome this professor is and recommending him.
The only assignments were a few page papers broken down into parts. Nothing else.
This professor is honestly hilarious!! You learn so much from him in a short amount of time, talks pretty fast too if I might add. Just be on top of doing the assigned reading and essays and you'll pass with a solid A. Gives REALLY good and honest feedbacks from your work.
Loved him. Funny, cares about his students, super progressive, & genuinely enjoys what he's teaching. He isn't afraid to talk about his opinions, which can lead to tangents. He gives plenty of time for essay writings & all the topics were fun to research & write about. Absolutely meet w/ him to look over drafts to easily change your essay into an A
Prof Lira absolutely adores the subject matter. He's so funny and engaging. If you're into literature, he's going to be your guy. Even if you aren't, he'll make you love it. He talks a lot but I never got bored, he was so dang hilarious. He grades really clearly and gives great feedback. Loved this class.
He is a good professor, but at the same time a tough grader. Sometimes is unclear what he expects in those research essays and you can get it wrong really easy. His lecture are interesting. However, English is not my field and I would not take him again for any of my English classes. He is the right professor for those that love reading and writing
This professor runs behind in class and doesn't tend to follow the syllabus. He gets sidetracked in his own rhetoric during lectures. He hones in on tiny details that may only have the slightest of connections with the topic at hand. Pop quizzes containing 2 to 3 questions count as much as his 3-6 page essays. No retakes were offered either.
This class was an honors class. I enjoyed it but there are many papers and he is a tough grader. If you ask him to read over your paper, he will give you feedback so that you can get a good grade and know what he wants. It is not really clear what he wants and he will take off points for things that you did not realize he wanted. I enjoyed the clas
Professor Lira is among the best professors at Reynolds. He really cares about his students and the material. Great lectures and tries to involve the students as much as possible. He shows respect to students and doesn't try to baby anyone. He is extremely reasonable and gives great feedback. If you want a good grade just ask him want he wants.
Great professor. Gave weekly quizzes on reading but were made to be passed if you even looked at the assigned readings, and always had extra credit. Essays were not difficult and he is very quick with feedback or clarifications. Very funny and passionate about subjects
He's a very laid-back professor which makes him approachable and respected. Make sure to stay on top of readings because he discusses them and gives frequent pop quizzes. Overall though, he's communicative and passionate about what he teaches.
took class for credit
had professor lira . cared about students . . plus cool lectures
participation mattered , professor cared about students , inspirational
yeah solid professor for sure . . . we did use textbook , gave feedback

yes, amazing in every way . . we used textbook
great prof. would take prof again, participation mattered. great lectures. take professor lira for sure
professor lira was an inspiration pretty much in every way . . . amazing prof . . . the class used textbooks . . .
Lira cares a lot about his subject and is very passionate about it. He is a tough grader though and this class had a lot of writing. Analytical writing is not my strong suit but I still passed with an A. He's really nice and understanding if you need to turn in things late. If u aren't a good writer and not good at research papers ur gonna struggle
Very respectable workload. Gives good feedback and helps you when you need it. He's very laid back and knows how to talk to his students, although he tends to ramble a bit.
I love literature, and I loved having a professor that made me love it even more! Fun, exciting discussions. Also for one, papers were fun to write. Would take again!
Professor Lira is the professor I wish my OTHER professors would mimic. He has a natural charisma and his lectures relate to his students. He talks about controversial issues but gives both sides a chance. If you pay attention and try- you WILL pass the class. He doesn't make you jump through unnecessary hoops like other professors will.
He is a very easy teacher however his lectures are pointless and he definitely has undiagnosed ADHD. You could go the whole year without going to a single class and still pass!
wonderful prof
Talented Professor
Professor Lira has a positive character and puts his dedication into his lectures.
An impressive guy
Favorite eng prof
Ima be honest... He's okay. Nothing negative to write, but I WOULD NOT take him again. Cons: He grades tough and talks a lot. Pros: Responds fast and talks fast.
This was my first class with him and I have nothing to complain about. Very clear about what he wants from you, and he's very funny. He grades the papers tough so don't think you can slack off because they are worth a lot of the grade. Overall, great class. I would take it again
He was okay, he literally said he was trying to change society through English. I don't feel that I learned much of anything to take with me. He grades pretty fast and is responsive. Just not my cup of tea.
His teaching method is different, I would say there are some ethics that were in the class. Sometimes I would get off topic and he would give me feedback about that so that was good to know a clear direction. Some homework but not a lot. He doesn't give you resources to be successful! He is very caring and understanding! Would definitely recommend
hello there dear sir
number 1 fav prof
I took the comparative mythology class and English 112; he is the coolest professor ever.
Professor Lira is passionate about the subject, but his lectures can be a bit rambling. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of the writing assignments. I found unstuck study helpful for essay prep.
Professor Lira is amazing and makes the class engaging and clear. The workload is manageable with a few essays and a final argumentative paper. Discussion boards are interactive, no lockdown browser. He's reasonable but assignments are locked at deadlines. Highly recommend for an organized, enjoyable low stress 7-week class.
I loved his online ENG 111 class. He gives few assignments and grades all of them fairly. His lectures are sometimes long, and sometimes short, but in the lecture he keeps you entertained by being funny. I would definitely take his class again.
A teacher I would recommend. He has a few assignments, and they are all reasonable. He gives good feedback on any points taken off as well.
