He is absolutely AMAZING!He loves to help and really teaches you a lot. Interesting subjects, and forces you to think (yes, even early in the morning), but makes class fun. Really recomend talking to him. Very flexible, and would love to help in any way he can :) consider yourself lucky to take his class!
He slightly resembles Shaggy from Scooby Doo. He's a young, funny guy who's very clear on his requirements for assignments, and very helpful if you need clarification or help. He will cancel lecture every couple of weeks to allow time for peer review, and also to meet with every student individually to discuss their previous and future papers.
This class is amazing and I would recommend it to ANYONE. In fact, you there, go take it now. But he's just a great teacher, he really cares, he's helpful, funny and hell just cool to talk to. Your writing will grow so much and he always gives positive criticism that really helps you fix your papers. If you need your English II or III take this!
He now teaches at the University of Nevada, Reno. He's wonderful! He's funny, and adds interesting things to your day.
He was a very helpful teacher. At first I thought he was going to be mean, but once you get to know him he's a cool guy. His clas is super easy. Just do all of the assignments and you'll pass. You get 5 absences and if you don't use them he puts them towrads a missing assignment. I would recommend his class!
He was extremely helpful with everything. I got a bad first impression from him on the first dfay, but once you begin to know him he's a really cool guy. His class was easy, just do your homework, and write your papers and you'll be fine. I would recommend.

First day of class he came off as a hard a** but after you actually start the course he is very helpful, assigns many assignments (approx 4-6) a week but will make you a more confident and better writer. He is a really great prof.
He was so rude! Seriously, i took him just because of the ratings on this site. He was fun at first but if you and him dont click, your class will be hell. He likes to do things his way, dont ask questions he reallly doesnt like that.
Very excited to teach and very helpful. If you want to read some great pieces and write some cool essays, take this class. It's not often profs are stoked about teaching, he's so enthused.
Awesome teacher. He is super encouraging and will go out of his way to meet with you. I definitely recommend him for this class, or any English class really. Show interest in the subject matter and go to class and he will love you.
Best english teacher ever. Makes class fun! Very helpful... I still go back and get his help on other papers. Great help on essays. Very recommended, if you need to take eng 101 make sure you get him!
Jason is a darn good English professor. If you want to find yourself as a writer, Jason's the professor to take. He's extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter, and knows a lot of tricks you can pull within your writing to make it intriguing. ENG 401B is a required class for most English majors. If you have to take it, take it with Jason.
I had Ludden over this summer and I am a non-English major. He made his class how it is supposed to be; do the work, participate and read the readings, you?ll get an A.I would love to take 102 with him or any other class that he offers.UNR will lose him to a better school eventually so take him while you still have a chance
I've taken many English classes at UNR, and hands down this was the best professor I've ever had! I learned so much in his class, and it was a great experiance as a writer. He goes out of his way to help you if you put in the time and do the work. He's straight forward and easy to talk to. Take him if you get the chance!
Great teacher. Take his class if you can.
waNTED TO switch classes on the first day!!!! thought he was going to be strict....but was actually a very laid back teacher...he was very helpful..should definitely take his class but if you hate reading avoid this class...
Great teacher. I feel like I didn't know anything about short stories before I took this class. He's great for your writing, and you'll learn a lot about yourself. Take him :)
He is very strict and picks favorites. You will end up reading A LOT! There is so much work in this class as well.
I have to say he was the best professor that I have ever had. He was helpful and very knowledgeable about the subject matter. He is somewhat strict, but this is an adult world and I admire that about him. He was also a lot of fun.
He took over the class I was taking w/ another professor. He made the material way more interesting but seriously this guys a ****. He's got a bad attitude. He is heavy on the reading, put on top of the already established list that I honestly felt cheated out of learning because I was just trying to get it done sometimes.
He was full of useful information, although, it's true he is an a** sometimes. He wont respond to e-mails as well. Over all a great teacher though
Great guy, he'd be awesome to hang out with but as a teacher, HOLY CRAP! His class was ridiculous (and not the good kind either). You will READ YOUR ASS OFF! IF YOU DONT READ DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!
This was his first time teaching Linguistics. He came in to cover for our Prof. At first, he had me skeptical. But honestly-he turned out to be pretty bad ***. He wants you to think outside the box. He assigned pretty rough material and HEAVY reading. But I really did learn in this class. If you want to REALLY learn, take him. :)
Easiest professor I've ever had. Everything is explained clearly in the syllabus, so don't lose it! He meets with you on all your essays and is so helpful. There's a lot of things you have to print so make sure you have your own printer and a lot of ink.
Jason is an extrememly helpful prof. He does assign a lot of readings so be prepared for articles that are 15 pgs long. His conferences are pretty cool, just do not get lost trying to find Bibo Coffee! =]
Cons: heavy reading and articles that go on for days. Pros: REALLY REALLY HELPFUL, does not get mad when you ask him questions, makes you a better writer and he's cute =)
Really smart, funny, intersting professor and class. He gets the students involved and bought us coffee and pizza once, so that was cool. Also, very helpful and willing to put in extra time for students. Oh, and he's hot.
Best Teacher I've taken. You will be doing a lot of readings.. But the reading were very interesting. He will have you do a journal entry, the are very creative, and make you think. I would Highly Recommend!!
Jason was one of the best English teachers I've had. Sure I dreaded going to class, but that was only because I do not like English, he is very clear on what he wants from his students, his writing prompts are interesting. The only down side is that we had to watch a lot of movies outside of class. Great class though, I recommend taking him! :)
Jason is awesome. He assigns quite a bit of homework and reading, so don't take the class if you can't handle it.. that aside, the class if fun and super interesting, and Jason wants you to do well, he'll help you out! He doesn't teach a higher english class, but if he did, I would take it, no doubt.
Most work I have ever done for a class, but it is well worth it. You want to hate him because of it but he is very helpful and intelligent that you just can't. If I had to take him again I would. Just do all the work and you'll be fine.
While there is a lot of reading and work, if you just do it you'll get an A. Also, office hours are amazing, use them
I've probably never had a heavier work load but most of it was just reading. And i did learn alot. if you have the option, you should take his class
Very heavy work load.
He was a nice guys but failed to keep up to date on the online homework. He did not post any assignments for 3 weeks and then when he did post them he gave us 5 days to do them. When our class failed to watch a movie he again posted lots of assignment and gave us 5 days to do them. He is a good teacher but he seems unorganized with a heavy work load
Since it is an English course, reading and writing was expected, but for this course, there was a lot of it. Just stay on top of the work and everything will be fine. After all, he did say it's harder to fail the class than pass.
Gave too much work
Lots of homework and reading! Loved this class and it was never hard to go to, time goes by super fast! Very interesting professor and has been to many different places, lots of stories to tell. If you don't like reading, seriously, don't take the class. But WELL worth it if you do! His personality makes him super cute too ;) easy to go to for help
Lots of work towards the beginning of the semester but it tapers off towards the end. I did not like him at first but he definitely grew on me throughout the semester. He will work with you on anything you need. It's a lot of reading, but it is worth while. He makes you think outside the box and will give you a new perspective on a lot of things.
He is a very interesting teacher who is really passionate about his job. The work load is really heavy but it all ties into what is being talked about in class and the final papers he assigns. He is willing to work with his students and help them understand exactly what he is looking for. If you don't like reading, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Jason is an amazing teacher! He seems mean at first and that the class will be very hard but, he really works for his students and will help them with anything they need! Very flexible and actually cares about our education unlike other teachers. THANK YOU JASON!
Ludden is a good professor, but assigns a lot of work. If you do all the assignments you will get an A in his class, you got to work for it. Averaged fifteen hours of homework a week.
He's hard to get used to, but takes the time to make sure that everyone understands what's going on in class. This is definitely a class that makes you work for your grade, but I wouldn't recommend this class for anyone that has to know their grade after every assignment. He's a pretty fair professor! Wish he taught 102.
If you don't like reading, don't take this class. There is a lot due for every class. He's a really easy grader as long as you keep up on all of the assignments. Don't fall behind and you will be fine.
Jason is the most enthusiastic english teacher I've ever had. He loves the topic and knows a lot about it. Beware, there is so much reading in this class, but you will absolutely get an A in his class if you just suck it up and do the homework and papers. As long as you simply show you're trying you will get an A no doubt.
He is a very chill professor. He is unpredictable with his outfits. He will sometimes start singing about the topic we are discussing. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed as long as you are willing to put in the work.
Great professor to start off my college career. Makes learning fun while very insightful. I took this class during summer session and it was the best decision of my life. Would recommend to anyone. Also, his outfits and music taste will give you life.
Jason is a pretty chill professor to have. He is very particular about essays, and assigns A LOT of reading assignments. However, if you do all of the assignments and go to class every day, you will pass with an A. He is also pretty understanding, just show that you put in effort and he will work with you. Also, he does not have any tests.
This professor is really friendly and wants it's students to succeed. Like everyone else said "THERE IS A LOT OF READING AND HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS". But all of the reading are really helpful. He cancels class for a week so that he can meet with the students to work on improving their paper. Also don't fall behind in class but it's an easy A class.
Lots of homework but you can skim it and do well. Attendance is required. If you show up and do your work you are pretty much guaranteed an A.
This class requires a copious amount of reading - probably like 3-5 articles for is due for homework. As long as you logically respond to them, you will receive credit. He is such a smart guy - his lectures are entertaining so go to class. The papers (4) do require you to think long and hard but he holds meetings to discuss papers which helps a lot
Great professor, always looking out for people. Makes you do a lot of reading, and homework, but it's really useful and pinpoints learning objectives that will really stick with you later on. As long as you put effort into your work and show that you're learning, you'll get credit and do good in the class. Easy to work around and learn new skills.
He gives a lot of reading material, and usually ones on the library website. Sometimes these readings are more difficult to find. He does not always stick to the schedule (& does not always tell you the changes) and he requires fifteen minute meetings with him from time to time. Ludden also has his own list of writing rules. Expect criticism.
Really great guy but gives LOTS of reading. You can definitely get by if you don't do the reading for the next class period but it makes the class a lot less stressful and easier if you do it. For every paper, he cancels class for the week and has you meet with him about your paper for 15 minutes. I HATE English and got an A and no hw just readings
Jason Ludden is a funny and caring professor. He makes you work for your grade with lots of reading and homework but connects it all back to the lesson. There is one big project in this class that you work on for a good portion of the semester, so be sure to be thinking about a good topic. He will meet with you and help you with it as you go.
Jason is a great guy, but his class stressed me out SO much. Cried a lot. LOTS of reading and writing due every class. Short presentations, but not many. Gives good feedback during conferences about your paper. Really gets to know you as a person, too. Grading criteria is pretty vague. No tests, and the final is a cumulative portfolio of your work.
Jason is a great professor but he does assign a lot of work. Just make sure to do everything on time and you won't fall behind. He works with you if you do but really try not to because if you do, there's very little chance you'll catch up. There are quite a bit of readings but in the end, you will definitely find them interesting.
I am not exaggerating when I say his class had over 100 readings & assignments. He extended the deadline to the day grades were due because of the workload. If you are taking a lighter load, this class might be possible; but if you have a full 15 credits, Ludden's class will eat up your time. He's nice enough, but I wouldn't take him again.
Jason is a great professor! Took an English class with him over the summer and am currently doing a Core Humanities course over Wintermester with him. There is ALOT of reading! However, skimming can be done. He is very accessible and works with you to help you understand the readings. As long as you do all the work, you should be fine.
Definition of higher education. Ludden makes u think beyond the classroom and wants to prepare u as critical thinker to be functional member of society. Would definitely take again even though material was the most Ive received at UNR. Work on portfolio all course, so must submit work (or automatic fail, other than) submit entries before each class
Ludden is a terrific professor. His class has a LOT of work, and a lot of that work is reading highly academic rhetorical essays. So if that isnt for you, then dont take ENG400. However, Ludden is a really genuine, nice guy who cares for his students and goes above and beyond to help you in any way he can. One of the most approachable professors.
He assigned at least 8 things per week and it was always like 2 days before they were due, and they were not quick assignments. There is a lot of reading and a lot of homework with them. One pretty long paper, and no quizzes or tests. Grade depends on the buckets of homework which is graded roughly and that one big paper. He is nice but thats it.
Ludden is a wonderful professor regarding lecturing & was very flexible once we went online. He assigns HUGE amounts of homework, 2 papers, & the midterm & final paper. The good thing about his huge amount of HW is that it gives a really accessible pool of sources for papers. HW is graded on doneness over quality of understanding. Stay on top of it
Dr. Ludden is a good teacher and it is clear that he really enjoys the topic. I am not a history person so I did not love the class. It is a ton of reading and writing, but if you do the work, it is easy to get an A. The papers are the most challenging graded component. Going to discussion is mandatory and very helpful.
I took this class over Wintermester and it was pretty stressful. There was a lot of reading and writing for only 2 weeks but ended up giving us all A's as long as we did what was required. He's very engaging and gives feedback when we're meeting with our groups. We also watched every Jurassic Park movie and had to write a final essay on it.
Multiple busy work assignments every week on extremely dry and boring reads. Extra homework the week that an essay is due. Do not take CH 212 with Ludden, it's terrible.
There is a lot of reading and writing for each day of class but he makes lectures very easy to follow and fun. He also has one on one calls to make sure you are doing ok both in your classes and personal life. Cares about his students. If you do the work he will give you an A.
Most engaging and fascinating professor Ive ever had. He bought us all coffee instead of having lecture on the last day that Bibo Coffee on Record Street was open. You will have to work hard in his class, but his rule for us was that as long as he sees real effort, then you get an A.
Ludden assigns at least 10 useless and time wasteful homework assignments a week. If youre a freshman taking easier classes this might be for you, but if youre an upperclassmen taking 15 units this class is a chore. Stay away.
Honestly a great guy and he clearly cares about his class, however the amount of useless work in his class is more than I've ever seen. Every class period you'll have at least 4 assignments due that can easily take 2hrs to accomplish. For a nonmajor class its honestly j ridiculous.
Do NOT take this class. I enrolled hoping this class would improve my writing however he hasnt graded anything all semester. He assigns 3 essays during finals that literally no student has the time for, doesnt check his email, and is extremely vague on what he expects. His class revolves around science but he admittedly knows nothing about it.
Jason is a man who has not read a single one of the readings he assigns. He was lenient once the end of the semester came but it was extremely hard at the beginning of the semester. Jason does not know time management. He also does not know what grade is. Don't take this class.
Jason is a terrible professor. He may be smart but he does not give an ounce of respect to the students. He does not answer emails, he marks you absent when you respond to the attendance question and won't change it when you tell him and he is rude. He tried to fail me because I had covid and couldn't come to class even though I had a doctors note.
Don't take this class with Jason. The amount of work required on top of the things talked about in lecture being completely separate from the discussion makes this class a total nightmare. His assignments can take up to eight hours to complete even if you're a good writer and he assigns so.much.reading. Take this class with different prof if u can
He wasn't a bad guy, he just assigned too much reading for a basic level class.
I hate this class. He gives out way too much work. Seriously don't take him. He gives us more work than all my other classes combined. It useless information.
VERY STRESSFUL!! The content of his lectures can be interesting, but basically irrelevant to the reading he assigns - and he assigns SO MUCH READING! There are at least 3 readings per lecture on top of the three books he assigned this semester. He clearly cares about the class, but treats it like an honors course/assigns too much unnecessary work.
Insane amount of work for a low level class. If you dont make friends you have to do these huge 40+ page assignments alone every other week. Doesnt accept late work yet still has not graded assignments from over two months ago so you dont know how youre doing until the end. 100% do not recommend ever
I was going to give him a lower rating, but he bought us all donuts at the end. His class is an absurd amount of work, but as long as you do what he asks, he guarantees an A. Collect it and move on.
Professor Luden asked a lot of his students but the content of his lecture was interesting. He spoke about many issues that are important and provides a very knowledgeable/profound perspective. He does assign a lot of reading and writing but cares about student success, he allows for group work and dropped some assignments due to student exhaust.
he expects you to treat this class like it's your only class. assigns 40+ page readings and expects you to memorize it for assignments and exams. an insane amount of work for a CH class. stay away for your own mental sake.
This class is pretty interesting and Professor Ludden clearly enjoys teaching. The only downside to this class is the crazy amount of reading every week.
Overall you can really tell Prof. Ludden cares about the subject he's teaching and really wants you to succeed but good lord the readings felt endless, way to difficult to keep up with some weeks. That being said, exams were easy to prepare for and easy if you understand key points of readings, and the essays, though heavy, had clear guidelines.
Not super difficult class, but assigns A LOT of readings. I'd understand for a BA major, but as a BS major it seemed unrealistic to read all the 15+ pg readings (4-5 assigned each week). The exams took a lot of preparation to achieve an A.Ultimately, the TAs grade the exams/papers so grading varies. Requires books, tho some found online -free pdf.
Ludden was my favorite! His lectures go off of single words, but notes help a lot. He really cares and class tests are a lot based off of opinion. Between discussion and lecture you will be very prepared for tests. By far my favorite class, only thing is a lot of reading! Just write a few key points from each reading given!
Great person, so much homework. Doesn't grade quick at all. My first assignment of the semester was graded a week ago... You won't know your grade by the end of the semester. No effort, NO PASSING.
