DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He is awful. He doesn't expain anything, the tests are so hard and pratically everyone in the class is failing at this point. Trust me don't take this class with this professor.
Test are worded totally different from any work during the week. Doesn't offer much help. Rude when you try to ask for help. No extra credit. No test drop. NOTHING to help curve grade. If you don't understand prepare to feel like a dumb child, b/c thats how he'll make ya feel.
I originally took this class at an ivy league school and made a B with relative ease. I took this class as a review and wound up dropping the class. The tests were extremely difficult and the lectures were no more informative than the textbook. I had one of the highest class averages, but refused to accept a C. I would stay away from Dr Matthews
To get an A in this class you must do the following: take responsibility for your own grades, read the chapter and take YOUR OWN NOTES from the chapter, study for about 20 hours a week, understand and conceptualize the material before moving on to something new, and give him respect. I earned an A because I studied hard. He is not rude, unless U R.
Dr. Matthews will help you if you initiate the interest in having him help you. After making a D on the first test, I began to sit with him for a couple of hours per week. If you take the time to answer all of the questions at the end of each chapter (a lot of work) then you will do fine. He should make that mandatory.
Dr. Matthews is a great professor for real science students who are willing to study and do homework. If you can't do those things well then find another profession and stop blaming your professors. He will help you as much as you ask, and he gives bonus points. Tough class (as it should be), but entirely worthwhile for those who are serious.
Although began with a hatred in his class,I began to like his class gradually. He is good for those willing to follow his policies. We had 4 tests(one dropped)+ final,10homeworks,and a couple of labs for grading. However,he gave many bonus quizes and extra credit opportunities for extra points. Finally,if you do not do your part he is bad for U.
He is hard at first, but he DOES lighten up, he IS lenient, he DOES have a sense of humor, and he DOES give partial credit. I averaged a 62 on my exams but made a c+ b/c I did the homework, did the labs, did the prechapter quizes,& got a few bonus points. He is VERY nice if you initiate and show interest. This class is hard no matter who you take!
I had a very bad experience in Gen Chem I with a different prof., so I came Dr. M's class with little background in Chem. He is very willing to work with students and to answer any questions you may have. Read ahead, study hard, and you'll do wonderfully. Great teacher.
Tough class. I missed a few classes because of other obligations and it almost killed me. Dr. Matthews will help you a great deal if you just ask. Homework is imperative. The format of the lab reports changes a lot. Labs are fun and informative. Pre chapter quizzes are tough, He's a great teacher, but probably the hardest professor I've ever had.
Dr. M is a very good professor I took him in the Summer and got a "C"; Never take CHEM or PHYS in the summer!!!. Of course CHEM is hard but I got A's on the labs/HMWRK. He is very willing to help but YOU have to work if want to understand CHEM. I recommend him highly to any student. Don't be fooled he is a GOOD Professor!!
After 3 semesters of general chem, Dr. Matthews was by far the best chem teacher I had. Learned a lot from his lectures and actually understood the concepts much better than in the past. Labs can be frustrating- be prepared for Qual. Analysis II. He grades labs leniently though. I got an A, learned a lot, and enjoyed the class.
Chemistry is not an easy subject. It is possible to get an A in this class if you come to class, pay attention to the lecture, read the book, do your homework and extra problems he puts online. Dr. Matthews is awesome and his exams are really not that hard, the grading is fair and you get partial credit.Don't expect to get an A without working 4 it
Dr. Matthews is an excellent chemistry professor. He is extremely fair and you know exactly what to expect from day one in his class. I have had three different chemistry professors so far and I learned the most by far from him. I would highly recommend him. You do have to study and be motivated to get the grade.
He is a great teacher. Easy to get along with has very good power point. You know exactly what to expect from the beginning. His test are hard if you dont study and follow his tips and notes. I got an A in this class and it was because he made the subject interesting and provided many different ways to learn the material. :)
A truly special professor. He is not interested in making professional students, but in creating scientists, doctors, and engineers. When you don't understand a concept, he can not only explain it to you clearly, but quickly picks up your train of thought and tells you where you are going wrong. This is a rare talent. A brilliant, patient man.
His teaching style is ridiculous. He expected us to practically already know everything he was teaching. Labs were pretty easy but his tests were unbelievable hard. I would not recommend him to ANYONE.
Prof. Matthews is so far the best professor I have had for chemistry! He drops one of your 4 exams, plus before every exam there is a bonus quiz, which are pretty easy! He is very good at explaining and does not mind going over material several times if you do not understand it. You will learn so much from this class there are many chances for A's
He makes attendance mandatory. Labs once a week. writeups due. His whole lecture are pp. There was no learning. book or nothing. he doesn't even smile. :( sad semester, beware.
Expects you to know everything on his level. Dock points for not having the right lab notebook, or small dumb stuff. Doesn't give review for test, says to study the book, which doesn't help. Worst teacher ever, and I rarely say that since I'm an A student.
Good fair teacher. I am bad at math and actually learned word problems and stoichiometry in this class. You have to study, and it helps to talk to him if you are having issues during office hours. Got a B and worked for it, learned a lot.
This class is EXTREMELY difficult! The instructor is not a good at teaching the subject matter. I really applied myself, but still ended up withdrawing from the class. The instructor does not use class time wisely and most learning is done in outside of class via at home practice... BEWARE and BE AFRAID!
Awesome teacher! Chemistry is a difficult subject, but he teaches it very clearly, and answers questions. There's definitely homework, but not an excessive amount. He drops the lowest test, quiz, and homework grade. My intro teacher was terrible and I didn't understand chemistry at all but I LOVE chemistry now! I DEFINITELY recommend him!
BEST CHEM PROF I HAVE EVER HAD. Will prepare u very well 4 other difficult science courses 4 pre-med & related.Hated chem before taking Dr. Matthews & now I can't believe I actually understand it!He is an excellent teacher; clear explanations, great sense of humor, makes u feel comfortable asking ?s. Will take him for 2046 & organic. Read ahead!
Dr. Matthews is a cool professor. He may seem overly critical, but his intent is to get his students ready for the harder classes. He reasonbly lets you know what to expect on the tests. He also offers extra credit, you get to drop a test, and you get homework points. Not an easy subject but an excellent and fair professor! Take him.
Great teacher for anyone who must really understand chemistry. I feel very prepared for organic chemistry thanks to him. Do not miss a lecture...I missed one class and flunked that test. Luckily he drops the lowest test grade. I worked hard, but came out with an A. Glad I took him.
VERY STRICT. I LOST 5PTS ON MY LAB 1ST DAY OF THE COURSE. I PASS CHM1025 WITH AN A- AND IS CURRENTLY LOOKING AT AN C-. ONLY WAY OF GETTING AN A IS TAKING THIS CLASS BY ITSELF, AND EXPECT TO STUDY AT LEAST 3HRS A DAY; NOT COUNTING HW AND CLASS TIME....IF TAKING 6 OR MORE CREDIT HRS OR HAVE A FULL TIME JOB, YOUR BEST CHANCE IS C+
The TRUTH if your going to take him make sure you have no major gaps from intro be a text book learner, so much that u can actualy teach somone else the concepts if you can the test are yours if you even have a slight doubt of the material u better hit the eject button--Half my class is failing. to think all the great post he has
The Best advise?go see him during office hours, by doing so you'll see the kind of professor you'll be dealing with.BEWARE Don't be taken by the positive posts here?they're misleading. My experience? He regurgitates what he reads and has no real talent for teaching! Like I said go meet him?you'll save money & time!
He is PHD, but he doesn't teach. His class is like bible studies: A brief summon of the significance of individual effort followed by lengthy small group discussion by clueless ignorant disciples.IF you can teach yourself absolutely and able to handle brutal tests, tons of self study, has nothing else to do/study/ work, it's character building.
Dr. Matthews is extremely hard. No room for error or anything. Tests are extremely difficult. Avoid him.. His teaching style is dry and makes chemistry NO FUN..
Here's the deal: if u are of below average intelligence & are a lazy student, you'll HATE Dr. Matthews. If u understand that it takes hard work & diligence to do well in tough subjects like chem/physics/calc, u will respect him & be glad to be in his class.Want an easy A? Take someone else. Want 2 learn? Take Dr. Matthews.
Intelligent students will appreciate & understand his humor. Bitter students who did not do well in his class will call his humor dry or nonexistent. Consider the source(s) when u read these posts. Bottom line: he is a quality instructor & u will have 2 work hard 2 do well. U can't fake it in THIS class. If you're lazy, you'll fail. Period.Good luck
His class was very organized; he went by his syllabus. He covered the required material. His lectures were disappointing. His ?preaching? at the class was ridiculous. His disposition and speech was uncommonly negative. I found him to be one of the most disrespectful professors I have ever had.
The key to science is imagination, not close, word-for-word book-reading. Forget the names of the things and just imagine the things and you'll be fine. Have fun. IMAGINE. Use what this guy says to get a better imagination. AND ASK QUESTIONS! He's a good teacher. (If you spend more time imagining this stuff than thinking about it, you'll be fine.)
He's a really helpful teacher. You can learn a lot from him. Really easy to understand. Go for him!!!!!
Prof. Matthews was very informative and he gives a slightly different approach then the book, which to me made it easier than the book's approach to problems. So you MUST go to class. Use office hours. It's a hard class but do the practice probs in the book and read BEFORE class and it will be fine. Drops lowest test, quiz, hw, and lab. I got an A.
Run. The worst prof. ever he cant teach,he answers any question, but cannot explain it for you to understand, than tells you get help from the internet.u will regret it if you take him. Im an A student half of the class withdrew,no study guide.4exams short ans. 1 project n some homework.Marks u absent if u R late,I cant believe he still teaching
Dr. Matthew's biochem class was very straight forward. Go to class, take notes, pay attention to what he emphasizes, actually THINK about the material, and you will get an A. People who do not do well in his course are accustomed to classes with tests that merely require one to regurgitate material from the ppt, and this is not learning.
Dr. Matthews is a pretty good professor. He's nice, explains things well and wants to make you know why something happens. Don't slack off! Be sure to study well in advance so you'll do well on the bonus quizes. My suggestion is to get a solutions manual and answer questions from end of chapter to prepare for the tests.
He is the best Chemistry in FSCJ.If you REALLY want to learn, come to class every day.Remember READ the text book before coming to class,PRACTICE as much as you can, TAKE NOTE because his tests, and exams will cover all from his lecture.I took him since intro chem(all A) to organic I(B).Highly recommend for any one who REALLY wanna study.Best luck:)
Dr. Matthews, as he should be referred to as given he is a doctor, is the teacher you want to have. Expect to work for your education -instead of having it spoon fed. Do all the work, take notes in class, I guarantee your view on the universe will expand. He also takes the time to explore different possibilities. Great interactive teacher.
Professor Matthews is a really good professor. He explains what is expected of you and it is up to the student to put in the effort. You must study for his tests because he makes sure you fully understand the material. An A is certainly achievable with effort. Definitely recommend him for Chen
He is good. If you want to learn chem take him
Sad to say he is the only real teacher for CHM. Teaches great and answers questions on topics very well; however, his assignments are sometimes not clear. One small uncertainty in your test answers, he will mark wrong. His CHM Lab are sometimes unclear with the no guidance he gives. When graded you'll receive a low grade and no good answer why.
To be honest, I am an A student butnot sure I am going to do well in this course.I do well on the hw & the labs, but the tests are a whole other problem. I wouldn't recommend him. BUT, he does know a lot about chem, but if u don't explain your answers to his satisfaction, then the entire problem is WRONG!
Professor Matthews is NOT easy at all! His tests are half multiple choice & half are short response. He will mark you wrong for one wrong word or something small- most others would ignore/accept. He made a few people in the class cry because he makes you feel stupid! I would STAY AWAY from him if you want to keep your insanity & earn a fair grade
Dr. Matthews is great, he will help you until you understand the problems.
Dr. Mathews is the best professor. I strongly recommend him for your upper 4000 level courses. To get good grade in his quiz and exams, you must read the book and ask as much questions as you can. He explains them well. He gives bonus points for your projects and papers. His passion about biochemistry has good influence in his students.

Dr. Mathews is awesome. His expectation from students is high but that is the drive for student benefit in learning and retaining information . Take him as you want to further your career in biochem or PA, pharmacy. Be sure done your homework, research your procedure before coming to class. He is helpful if you email him beforehand and clarify it.
Dr. Matthews is awesome! He's willing to help, though he may not give a direct answer to a problem he will guide you to it. He's picky about wording for short answers on tests, if you practice them beforehand and ask he'll give feedback so you get it right. His lectures are great, he's hilarious, but you also need to put in work outside of class.
Forces you to have complete comprehension of the material and teaches as a college professor should. Don't choose with kids or job. An A is possible, but the subject is difficult. If you plan on going to Grad school for CHM, he will prepare you. Very intelligent, approachable and funny. Not bad to look at during long lectures either.
Do not take this professor! His lectures are clear and concise, but the lecture does not prepare you for his exams. Does not give study guides and the in class problems or homework do not help you study for the exam (stated by Professor Matthew). Pretty much teach yourself for this class and the lab notebook is due on the day of the last lab.
Worst professor. I forgot my comp book on lab day and he gave me a zero. Instead of letting me write everything down on a separate piece of paper. I could have went back and later wrote down everything in my comp book. ANYWAY he was horrible. I dropped ASAP. SUPER picky on everything, and gets mad easily. very snobbish in my opinion
I have taken Dr. Matthews for Gen Chem 1 & 2 in addition to Biochem. He is one of the best professors that I have ever had. He will challenge you and you will be pushed. In order to get an A in this class you have to study on your own and take plenty of notes in class. Read ahead of time and ask questions about what you don't understand.
Dr. Matthews will push you to your limits. That said, he is the best professor I have ever had! I was challenged and came to enjoy the challenge; in fact, I miss it! Take a chance and see if you can rise to the occasion. Not for students who are used to being fed study guides and rely on memorization- YOU WILL LEARN!
Dr. Jason Matthews is absolutely the best teacher. This is no exaggeration, he really spends the time to ensure you understand the information and honestly I didn't think teachers this good came at a small college like this. This teacher is why I came to college and I wish more were like him. Take this teacher if you want to learn.
Matthews is very strict, not helpful, and goes out of his way to make you feel like an idiot. I signed up for a normal class and he made it into a hybrid. Says he's there to help but makes you feel like an idiot when you ask questions. Lectures for 30 minutes if class does not do well on tests. Does not help during labs. DO NOT TAKE.
Dr. Matthews is an excellent professor. This a difficult subject but Dr. Matthews presents it in a way that is easy to understand. His tests are hard though and you will have to put in a lot of effort if you want to get an A. You will need to read the book, rewrite notes, and study often. I would take him again and recommend him to others.
Jason Matthews has one of the biggest chips on his shoulder I've ever seen. He thinks he is a God compared to his students, and makes sure everyone is aware of it. He is very rude and calls students out on petty things almost daily. Told the whole class how horrible we were multiple times per class period. Didn't like him as a professor or person.
He is the best teacher^^
What the person said on 10/06/15 is completely true. Please beware of this professor! Withdrawal rates are HIGH! This professor is very difficult, uncompromising, and condescending in the way he treats and helps his students. Pretends to be relatable, but completely isn't! Very tough grader on exams! Marks the whole question wrong for simple things
An excellent professor
Awful professor wish I would've taken with someone else..
Dr. Matthews is a high quality professor who I have taken for three courses, and I have received As in all of them. I highly recommend him for biochem. His courses require that you actually learn and not simply memorize. Read the chapters prior to class and ask him questions about what you do not understand during his office hours.
It is important to know there are 2 professors named Jason Mathews, the one on the 3rd floor in downtown campus is literally a terrible human being, idk about the other one but im warning you to stay away and run, he failed 70 % of his class and everyone had to drop out but 5 people, there used to be 20-35 people in his class. RUN FAR AWAY!!
Professor Mathews is a very experienced and talented. The main thing you need to pass his class with flying colors is TIME for THINKING, READING, and GRASPING
Professor Matthews is an excellent professor with his passion and sense of humors.
He will teach you and explain everything to the point where you feel like you got it. When the exam comes, you do your best and feel like you nailed it. However, you will be surprised that you failed the exams regardless of the effort. He marks off little stuff. For knowledge, take him. But if you want good grades, run away and find someone else.
This professor likes small classes so less work for him.
Very Hard professor. Please show up to class or you are screwed. He did a flip class where lectures are on line and you come to class and briefly do class problems. There are pop quizzes before the test if you miss one you fail the whole thing. I would never take him again if I could help it
Professor Matthews was by far the most degrading professor I've ever connected with. Unfortunately, due to his self infatuation he has no care for his students. I would stay clear of this one.
If you are a science major, take this guy. He will make you work, but you will learn SO much. I took him for intro chem and went into chem 1 knowing most of the course ahead of time. He will be sure that you know the material by lecturing about the videos you watch before class. Not a fan of the Pearson work though, very easily forgotten.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!! He is extremely rude, if you try to speak or even make a noise while he is talking he will gladly call you out and tell you that you have no right to speak yet he will interrupt with no problem at all. He scans all your work and saves it . If you are even 1 min late for class you are marked absent 7 or more he fails you.
One of the best professors at FSCJ. He is tough but super organized. As long as you follow the syllabus schedule, there is no reason why you can't succeed in his course. I enjoyed taking his hybrid classes because lectures are all online and he gives you the resources to succeed as long as you use them! Highly recommend Dr. Matthews for Chem 1 & 2
I absolutely loved this class! You definitely have to put effort into the class, and you have to show up on time to get the most out of it. Professor Matthews will try to help you understand the material the best he can but you have to put effort into it as well.
Hes a really great Professor if you give the course the allowed time needed to grasp the information. For his course you have to be ready to commit to studying and when he tells you to review the material, you should probably do so because it will help when it comes to exams! As long as you do all the work and study the material you should pass.
I took Dr. Matthews for Intro Chem and he was fantastic. I understood everything to get an easy A in Chem 1 who I took with Dr. James. Unfortunately, when I returned to his classroom for Chem 2, he wasn't nearly as helpful. He would walk away if he felt that his secondary explanation of a concept didnt help. Test were VERY hard. No wiggle room.
I refret not taking the warnings seriously, if you ask what to study for the test he will be vague and make it seem straight forward but when the exam comes, it requires a unrealistic amount of knowledge. He once said we had to only remember the structure amino acids and we'd be fine then the quiz would ask about the electornegativity in low Ph lvl
Taking his online Intro to Chem class was the hardest college class I've taken to date. Chemistry is my least favorite subject and online is my least favorite way to take a course. If you are not an EXTREMELY motivated student and are able to solely teach yourself a new subject, do not take his online class. Text is dense, no help on hmwk.
Dr. Jason was my professor this term, for a Chemistry class. It wasn't a easy class; you have to participate, read , practice a lot to get good results . Professor Jason has been really helpful, giving bonus quizzes, answering emails always, inspiring us to read. Very dedicated to teaching . Things that I learned here, won't ever be forgotten.
You'll leave class knowing your stuff if you put in the work. He's easy to reach, always answers questions, offers feedback on school choices or research papers you may've read. Clear expectations. Do the supplemental work for each chapter to best prepare for the tests. Study for the bonus quiz, it's worth it. Fantastic teacher.
Started with 23 people in class, went down to 9. He asks very specific, detailed questions on his exams. 3 exams about 26 questions and are each worth 200 points there is a cumulative final worth 150 points and a paper/presentation combo worth 150 points. Online homework. Does not do extra credit. Very particular and can be rude at times.
Work hard- get A or B. 1. HW due first day 2. HW (a lot): A. Sapling learning which has 30 Qs; usually takes me 1hr-3hrs. 1 hr or less if youre trying to cheat online but 2-3hrs if you really try to do the problems. 2. Pre-class assignments from video lectures you watch due at the beginning of every class per (takes me a while) Teacher: Helps u
Theres a reason why this professor has a high drop rate. Do yourself and your gpa a favor and STAY AWAY unless this is the only class you are taking for the semester and have nothing but time. I should have heeded the warnings and advice. Very particular professor and you will end up teaching yourself most of the time. THE WORST professor Ive had
This professor will take up all of your time. Save your sanity, time, &your gpa & take someone else. Pre-class hw 2 or more pages from video lectures of him mostly just reading words off PowerPoints due every class, hw online due the day before all (5) exams, lab reports, no study guides. Knocks off points or whole question wrong for little things.
Dr. Matthews does not care about his students or to teach them. Everyone was terrified to make a mistake or even ask a simple question, for his temper is easily excited. He does not teach the material. Drop rates are high. After taking his class you will need a therapist or have a mental break down from all the anxiety he causes.
I do not recommend Professor Matthews , he is rude, late to communicate, an inconsiderate. Course content is fairly easy. Any time I email Professor Matthews through blackboard, my personal email is added, he always replies to my personal email telling me to only use the blackboard email which is annoying and no other professor makes it a issue.
The only good thing about him is that you really understand the material. He is so specific in everything if you missed up one of his instruction you lose lots of points he is not an easy grader. If you are taking full time do not take his classes because he gives so much work before and after class.
Dr. Matthews is just very particular about certain things like attendance/lateness and emailing, but once you get used to that, hes not bad. Do not miss his lectures and take really good notes during them. He tells you everything you need to know for your test. He will make you think critically at times, but its definitely possible to do well.
Do not take this professor! He gives lab reports the week of test plus home work and quizzes. He nicks you on test for any minor mistake. I repeat do not take this professor! I have gotten A's all through college and this guy was by the far the most over the top teacher when it came to work and grading! I know ppl post here but ppl believe me
HORRIBLE. DO NOT TAKE. WENT TO TAKE THE FINAL EXAM AND COULD NOT FIND IT ANYWHERE. The proctor called him, and he wasn't available. I wasn't able to take the class since I work full-time. This was the only day I could take the exam. And the exam was nowhere to be found. other professors make finding an exam easy to find. Unorganized prof.
I see tons of bad reviews for him in person but I can tell you his class online is so easy. He posts all the homework and exams at once so you can just finish the class anytime. All exams are basically open book, only proctored exam is the final. He drops your lowest exam score to help your final grade. He gives feedback on discussions.
Maybe I didn't realize Matthew's rating, maybe I had no other choice. VERY clear, STRICT grading, submission criteria. Does not make exceptions for essentially anything. NO late work whatsoever, if you don't understand, FSCJ tutors are your only help. Feels as if he doesn't care if the student learns. Only upside is 13-3 class is usually 12-1:30.
Will not accept late work, even for medical reasons such as seizures and providing a medical note from doctors. He will say that you should've planned ahead, as if seizures can be rescheduled to happen at a different time. You have to study the material by yourself as the lectures are pretty much him working example problems with the class.
Took hybrid Chem 1. Best 4/5 tests with a final. Has weekly homework through Sapling and a lab due about every two weeks. All of his lectures are online, but he goes over examples in the conference. Has a lot of resources for extra practice. Strict grader and requirements, but that's probably the best for chemistry. Is kind of a robot.
Dr. Matthews is a very hard grader, if you make one small mistake, he will deduct a lot of points. Tests are closed booked and lots of material is covered, which makes it hard. If you are not a good test taker, do not take this class. If you get A's on the labs and homework, and fail the exams, you will make it out with a C. Drops your lowest grade
Prof. Matthews really does not teach. You will pretty much be teaching yourself chemistry if you decide to take his class. Deducts a lot of points and seems bothered when you ask for help. Also be prepared to not miss anything, tests, hw, class. He also does not take any excuses, whether there was a dire reason or not. Just be prepared.
There are alot of labs with a partner normally. Alot of opportunities to get points but test are worth 60 percent of your grade. Notes sheets arent allowed on test but he does provide periodic table and basic conversions for most test. He has you go over material before class then has worksheets to practice.
I would reccomend this professor if you hate your life. This professor is by far the worst i have ever encountered. Does NOT teach, you do lectures before class online then go in class and perform problems. Exams are ridiculously difficult with no study guide. This professor will make you hate your life, STAY FAR AWAY.
Dr. Matthews will try to make you become a chemist. You have to understand EVERY concept and be able to explain why it occurs on exam. ANY 5 STAR rating on his profile was done by him. There is no way a student would ever give him a 5 star rating after taking this class. His precentage of students that get an A are less than 5%.
All of the 5 star ratings for this professor are complete bs. DO NOT fall in this trap. This class will literally want to make you stop taking classes. By far the worst experience i have ever encountered. He thinks all of his students are Harvard students; do not take unless you want to suffer.
must purchase an access code for online homework...which can be tedious. Assigns pre-lecture assignments through canvas that must be turned before lecture starts.. Offers no extra credit and doesn't drop any tests. Presentation, research paper, AND an accumulative final.... big yikes. This course is all gas, no brakes. Here's your warning...
Many students have been warned not to take this course with this professor. He gives four tests. Homework doesn't help. The tests are worth 60% of the overall grade. He will tell you just read the book if you are not doing well. Majority of students drop or withdraw. Started with about 18, ended up with about five with few passing. Take it at UNF.
I am telling you all right now, to not be stubborn and think " Oh the students probably just did not study enough". you are dead WRONG. If you want to waste your money then by all means. This guy loves to fail his students and it is very obvious after the first exam when all 18 students FAILED and only two passed. LONG STORY SHORT NO.
Gives a ton of homework, I have spent some weeks doing up to 6 hours of homework and he still recommends us to study after all the work. I understand students learn best by doing work but the amount of homework he gives per week is insane
Professor Matthews is a great teacher. You can tell that he is very knowledgeable of his material. If you are expecting an easy grade, don't take his class. You have to study because we do work in class and look at the lecture before class. Study the lecture videos. They help a lot when preparing for a test. The little things do matter to him.
DO NOT TAKE! Absolutely not. I wish I can get my money back from taking this class. He is an awful prof and he is very condescending, and does not care about student feelings or their thoughts. Always wants to be right. 75% of grade is exam, so if you fail one, good luck getting a C or better. Awful. DO NOT TAKE YET AGAIN
Lots of reading/videos and doing homework. Ask lots of questions as you'll be teaching yourself; don't fall behind.
If you're lazy and bad at studying, don't take him. If you're motivated and have good study habits you'll learn an incredible amount about chemistry. So, if you're trying to skate through college take someone else. If you want to learn and grow as a person, take Dr. Matthews. If you want to actually prepare for a university, his class will do that.
Nope. Don't do it.
If you're a student who can't learn without face-to-face lectures. Do not take his course, as all of his lectures are from 5 years ago on youtube with nothing but a white screen and his scribbling. Tests are 70 percent of your overall grade and are extremely difficult. Even said that most students who turn in everything do OK throughout the course
Dr. Matthews is great if you really want to advance your Chemistry knowledge. He is tough, has a backward teaching style where most lectures are videos, and assigns homework every week. Most work is done at home. You will be expected to take 20 hours a week out of class into studying Chemistry, but man will you know it if you do well enough.
I took Prof. Matthews class in Fall of 2022 and my credit didn't count at the college that I currently attend. Compared to the chemistry prof. that I have now, I only understand it because of Dr. Matthews. Although, he was a little tough, he breaks it down so that you'll leave being able to teach it to someone else. I would highly recommend him.
Professor Matthews expects a lot of work, but his class is great for motivated students looking to truly learn chemistry. Use Unstuck AI and the provided resources to master the material - it's challenging but worth it.
He's brilliant and knows everything about chemistry. He answers any question you have. You'll learn a lot, but the class is very stressful. Make it your top priority, and don't take it with other science courses. Exams feel rushed, but if you listen carefully, you'll do well.
Hybrid class with short, blurry, outdated online lectures + worksheets due at class start of next class. No study guides, nitpicky grading, and throws complex topics right before exams. Relies on endless packets, very one dimensional teaching. Smart guy who knows his stuff but not motivating, 1st day of class said full-time workers will struggle.
Professor Matthews doesn't lecture in class; you are expected to watch 7-8 videos before every class, fill out a worksheet, and take notes on all the videos. When you enter class, he hands out the worksheets to complete about the videos. He's a tough grader and will cover challenging topics right before the test. I would not recommend him.
This class will take up 80% of your schoolwork time. You'll watch video lectures and complete pre-class assignments due every session. Exams make up 70% of your grade. Class time is spent on practice problems, labs, or exams. DON'T take this course if you're also taking other STEM classes!
If you complete the homework assignments and complete the learning outcomes for each chapter, and study for each test, you'll be able to pass. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you're confused. Make sure to write what the professor says, as he may ask questions that are on the test but not covered in the PowerPoint slides.
