Inventing Death is a great class. While challenging in many aspects, it is also a great way to satisfy an english and philosohpy credit. He's creative and really awesome.
Very passionate, very intent on getting students the help they need. He doesn't want to fail you, he wants to teach you.
Wants more in-depth analysis; will help you write about what he wants to read if you meet with him, otherwise, plan on a B or less. Interesting and deep, springboard for really good thinking. Does let class go off on tangeants though.
Ten page papers are impossible!
This is a very good class, but be prepared to work your ass off. There are two 10-page papers to be completed and reading (100 easy or 50 hard pages) before each class. He is helpful, take advantage of office hours. Jason is clear, material isn't.
The best class I've ever taken. The work is hard, but Dr. Mauro is willing to give any help he can. Wonderful!!!
Well....he is either an absolute genious, or has no idea about any of the class material. Either way he pulls it off.
The entire class is challenging-the books we read and the papers we write sometimes seem impossible. But Jason makes is very helpful and gives great advise on ways to improve your papers. He's awesome!!
I don't understand... Material is very confusing and I suppose Jason is clarifying, but I don't understand that either. Papers are hard and he's a tough grader, but I feel like a better writer now. Discussions seem, at times, unnecessary and useless.
This was a challenging course, but it was most definitely my favorite class and I will not forget it. Don't let the name of the class or the amount of work you have scare you. This class will change your outlook on life in a good way. :)
mm mm good
Hes a good guy! He teaches well but is so cryptic when u ask for help. He tries to make u answer ur own questions! But he's nice and smart and very passionate so it makes class fun! Hes also very hard so be prepared to work ur butt off!
Definitely brilliant and one of the best teachers I have ever had, quite possibily the very best. The class is extremely challenging, so beware slackers.
Grades guys easier than girls.
Thrilling. Speaks with such eloquence that I find him fascinating. Unfortunately the material we study does not have the same effect on me.
I've never seen someone speak so much with hand gestures; ASL? Nope, Literary Interpretation. He's an interesting experience all the same and is recommended.
Easily my favorite teacher on campus, but you must work hard.
Heavy reading load, but this class is rewarding. You can learn a lot and watch pretty cool films. I think Dr. Mauro kind of makes his course plan up as he goes, so structure was very free form. He is very nice and very intelligent. At the beginning of the course I would never have recommended him, but it's worthwhile to stick it out.

Inventing Death will blow your mind! He is so passionate...after class I will just go sit and try to absorb all of the info. Insanely DEEP material, so no slackers! Or close minded people for that matter. Will change your entire freakin life! Fav class of all time. Felt like my opinion mattered and was IMMERSED in the material.
Awesome class and teacher!
This man is amazing. In every way. Ask him a question, he will know. Ask him what you had for breakfast yesterday, and he will tell you. Death class is incredible, and this is an understatement. Words cannot describe it. Nothing can prepare you. The most incredible experience, the defining experience, of my life.
He is unnecessarily difficult in personality and work
This class not only covers extremely difficult material, but is also emotionally straining. It requires thinking outside of the box, and consists mostly of reading, disscussion, and writing. Proffessor Mauro is extremely intelligent and invested in the materal he teaches. He is more focused on the students learning then the grades they get.
mauro is a great guy and good at what he does, but our class could have been much more effective in teaching us about film. He teaches analysis fairly well, but I hate that his quizzes are dreamed up on the spot. Five questions to check reading 50 pages? It trivializes the knowledge. The text is good, but more teacing would have been better.
This is a very difficult and time-consuming class but also extremely interesting. The quizzes after each reading assignment are annoying. There's a heavy reading load but the material keeps your attention. Dr. Mauro is intelligent and passionate about what he teaches. Even though it's very challenging, I feel like I learned a lot from the class.
IMHO it was the hardest of the first semester honors class offered, but I would still say it's the most worthwhile. Mauro is a nice guy who will humor almost any opinion. Grades hardly factor in to what he'll eventually give you, so just show up and work hard. This class made me want to change my major to Philosophy. Definitely worth it. :)
this guy rocks!! one of my favorite professors!! hard quizes, but i failed most of um and got a B+!!! :)
This is an incredibly hard class. He is awesome at lectures, but is never, ever available for outside help. He doesn't even list where his office is, phone number, or email! His questions on the quizzes are insane. He dissects films like Blade Runner and abstract films to a point that isn't necessary. DONT TAKE HIM FOR FILM STUDIES!!!
Is obvviously intelligent and into what he teaches. But he does not relate to the students unless you share the same passion for film. The daily quizzes were a pain, since it would be 3-6 questions over 100 pages of reading. Did not respond to my emails asking for help or clarification on my paper. This class should NOT be labeled as ENG at all!
Wow, this class is hard. Do your readings, and show up to class. People who miss, fail. We had over 30 people at first, by the end we had about 14. You will learn alot and watch great films. But be prepared to earn your grade, and have an open mind. And he is a pain in the ass on papers he says so himself, I never got below an A and I got a B-.
Despite Mauro's good humor and great subject, I found this class very annoying. We went on too many tangents. I loved the reading and learned much from it but the class itself did not enhance the reading. I don't care to spend 30 min. of class hearing his life story. in general, class was ok but not outstanding
What I disliked most about Mauro is his unclear way of grading papers. I got checked off on everything he wanted in the paper yet he gave me a B+ after scratching off a different grade twice. Really likes pretty girls who boost his ego. He's arrogant and doesn't care as much as he pretends-but all in all he's o.k. class was kind of all about him
Dr. Mauro is obviously intelligent and a caring instructor. Unfortunately, a hot headed student took over this class, begrudging the rest of us the opportunity to get anything out of the class.
Quiz every day, definitely have to read for this class. Films are always good. Will help with your papers if you ask.
Mauro is very intelligent and expects just as much out of his students. Has a theory on everything. Class takes a lot of time and effort...you need to take the readings and papers seriously.
toss everything you've learned away and get ready to start anew; he will break your brain and leave you to put it back together.
amazing teacher! he kick's butt!
This is definitely one of the best professors I have ever had. He loves what he teaches and if you are interested in it you will do well. You must be ready to do a lot of reading since he will quiz you every class.
I took the class this summer, and was expecting to read a lot of work from various American writers, but we spent more time talking about the Puritans and Christianity than Emerson, Whitman, or Thoreau. Take this class if you like going to church. I hated every minute.
Awesome professor, totally hot
Awesome professor. Very philosophical, highly intellectual, extremely intelligent. If you want a great conversation, go see him in his office for a chat. Great guy!
His illustrations are phenomenal, and as an English major I appreciated his ability to support each claim with a lucid example. Makes you think like none other. Also, his enthusiasm for the subject matter is contagious and respect for various cultures infectious. I put my heart and soul into the very short summer class and was ecstatic to get my A.
Took him for the honors Inventing Death course. He has high expectations. You have a reading assignment nightly, and a quiz every day. He doesn't try to make the quizzes hard but the readings are so hard that the quizzes have to be hard. 2 big papers that make up 70% of your grade. Attendance is mandatory but going to class seems pointless.
He's really smart, speaks well, and knows his stuff. Some of the readings are REALLY difficult but, if you go to talk to him, he will gladly help you. He teaches a lot of stuff that makes you think so don't take his class if you don't want a challenge. With that said, he respects you as a student and will always help you as best as he can.
He is so great. He is wired and creepy at first but as you get to know him, you will see his awesomeness. If you are in honors you need to take this as you 6 hour class.
A great teacher and super attractive
HE teaches so well, which isnt extremely hard to comprehend as can be seen with his chilly pepper rating
Great guy who only wants the best for his students, is a very well educated professor, and a brilliant man. Seems a bit odd at first glance, but once you get to know him better you can understand the method to his madness. Took him for honors Inventing Death; tough course, but very influential in my life, and I've grown to respect and admire him.
Very awesome professor! He really enjoys what he teaches. His enthusiasm really shows during lectures when he bounces up and down in front of the board. Quizzes every class, very intense papers. You have to really read and try on your papers to pass, but that's what college is about. An awesome class and professor for English Majors.
i took him for american fiction. he grades everyday by little quizzes, so if you read go if not dont. then he spends the rest of the class time expounding on nonsense. the only real grades are 2 essays which he grades from a-g! he is rediculous! even if you put your heart into these papers you will not recieve a grade for effort no guidelines eithe
Very excited about what he teaches. Loves to help you on your papers and really wants you to be involved. I felt like he really cared about every student and how we were doing. There is a lot of discussion, but it gets easier to share as time passes. The papers are hard and require effort, but you have a lot of time and help. I highly recommend it.
Gets very Passionate about his work, keeps talking to you till you understand it, only work was quizzes on the readings, and 2 large papers
He is so passionate about the readings and authors that he makes it almost impossible for you to sway from his own opinion. He's such a nice person. He has a lot of energy for what he teaches, but I would not want to take his class again. He was really unclear when explaining what he wanted from our papers, and they're worth over half your grade!!
Amazing Professor. He is passionate about his job and he does his job very well. I am not going to say his class is easy, you have to put forth the effort. Take his class though you will not regret it. This has been one of the most life changing classes ever. And I still find myself saying, "My Professor Jason Mauro once taught me.."
Dr. Mauro is overall "just" average. He does go on veeeerrrry long tangents about absolutely nothing in particular. Students with vague, nonsensical responses are praised and revered. I was so bored 90% of the time.
This is the most mind openin course I have ever taken.
Come to class and read. The class and teacher is awesome.
Very easy teacher to talk to and is all about helping the students whenever they need help.. I learned a lot in a six week term. Very demanding class if taken in the Summer though so be prepared at all times.
Loved this class, I learned way more than just American fiction. He is very engaging and a wonderful professor, I highly recommend taking him.
Enthusiasm A+ Insight into subject matter A+ Ability to inspire interest of students A+ Ability to communicate A+ Appearance - comfortable Philosophical inclination - somewhat disconnected to the philosophy of corporate America I would definitely recommend Dr. Mauro to any serious student.
Took an author I wasn't 100% interested in and turned him into one of my favorites. Seriously one of the best professors I have EVER had. Word of warning, will hold you responsible for reading. Gives a quiz each class. GREAT GREAT professor. Take his classes!!!!!
Mauro is a fantastic professor. He is willing to work with students. Very insightful. I learned a lot about American life in relation to texts. Fantastic class. Recommed taking it.
Mauro loves to teach, and in that he developes a very strict regimen by which the class should evolve. He loves to see students connect the works we discuss to anything so long as they can back it up. He doesn't add a lot to the gradebook so every thing you do end up turning in counts for a lot. I've taken two of his classes and would probably take him again.
Show up, read, and participate, and do well on the final essays. He's awesome
Toughest class I think I've had so far, but he has this passion for Twain that is contagious and his insight really helps you discover thought processes you may have not been able to access.
Amazing professor, make you love lit. very knowledgeable, and make you think in a different way.
Would not recommend for summer due to the heavy reading schedule, especially if you work or take another class. Could be managable during a fall or spring, but I wouldn't know. I have to say I don't think I will read another Mark Twain book for a while, if not ever.
I loved this class. It was awesome, and he really loves the material which rubs off. It was a challenge because there is a lot of reading. But I loved it, and he was great.
Makes class interesting. He loves feedback and appreciates every thing that students contribute to class. Lots of reading but if you do the reading, you'll be fine
Jason Mauro was one of the best at UNF when I was there in the mid 90s. He cares enough to pay each student individual attention and learn what what he or she cares about.
Took his inventing death class. It's easy if you read. You'll have reading assignments every week..but no exams!
I LOVE professor Mauro. He loves to teach and is very helpful. He pays attention of all of his students. He may seem odd at first but eventually you'll understand him. Deffinitly take Prof. Mauro!
Fosters interest, respects and engages with students, humorous, and knowledgeable. He'd much rather start an academic conversation than lecture or listen to his own voice at the expense of students. Will definitely take him again.
Professor Mauro's course has had a tremendous impact on my life. I cannot recommend him highly enough. He may well change your life.
Dr. Mauro is an enthusiastic, engaging professor who makes each class a delight! His standards are high, and he puts so much effort and energy into each class. He's intelligent, helpful, and creative. He has a tangible passion for learning that is contagious!
Not a blow off class. 30-50 pages of reading every week, with 3 question quizzes, watching lots of films. It's interesting content, it's just not an easy class.
He warns you that there is a lot of work on day 1. I was shocked how many people didn't show up again after that. Yes, you have to do the readings. There is a quiz EVERY class. But you're in college now. 7 papers total, short but due 3 at a time then 4 at a time. Just be thinking of things to write about throughout the semester so you don't panic.
The daily quizzes, long readings, and many papers will discourage a multitude of students from taking Mauro. That's a shame, because he can make any reading material become the world's most interesting topic; even Puritan literature!
If you don't do the reading that is assigned for homework 3 times, be prepared to get a C.He gives tons of quizzes in the beginning of the semester, and by the time you realize you need to straighten up, he will stop giving quizzes. If you want to save your GPA, dip.
Mauro's enthusiasm alone inspired me to thrive in this class. I've never had a professor that was more willing to dig deeper into the text to really provide a clear understanding. He will take your view into account, so long as you back it up. In order to do well you must have read the texts assigned, and engage in the conversations in class. 10/10
Professor Mauro is awesome! When you first start his class you might be taken aback by his quirkiness and enthusiasm for the course but it's those characteristics which make this class interesting. He let us pick our readings at the beginning of the year. So helpful and tells you exactly what to write for your papers. TAKE HIM FOR SURE! He is great
Okay. Professor Mauro is great. Be ready to read and write a lot, but also be prepared to actually learn. He is extremely enthusiastic with the way he teaches. Some days he literally would be furiously pacing and jumping around. Attendance is mandatory, but this isn't a class you'd ever want to miss. He's great.
Most interesting, entertaining, and animated professor I have ever had.
I would highly recommend taking Professor Mauro! he is an extremely enthusiastic and engaging teacher who actually cares about the material and his students. He is fun, and his class follows a great, open format but attendance is mandatory and be prepared to read and work for your A.
Super intense professor. The ideas brought up in discussion provoke thought and conversations after class. Dr. Mauro is extremely knowledgeable and well informed on the subject matter. I highly recommend any class you can take w/ him.
I'm not even going to sugar coat this. I was a 4.0 student, and with this class, I literally told myself that I would be happy passing this class with a C. But keep on, it seems terrifying and impossible, his quizzes seem like mini anxiety attacks, but if you do what he asks, the class is phenomenal. I've never enjoyed a class more than his.
He is amazing. Very energetic, animated, opinionated, and fun. Without him being an awesome professor, the class would be a drag. Sure, it's every kid's dream to watch a movie every class, but you have to take comprehensive notes in the dark. Short quizzes on the reading every week, which is 30-50 pages. Don't skip because your grade will plummet.
A fantastic course with a professor that truly broadened my ability to enjoy and appreciate movies. Whereas I once enjoyed movies as a movie, now I enjoy them as much as I would a five course meal, now that I know how to discern different techniques, tastes, and themes in film. One of the best courses I have ever taken.
He'll casually drop book titles during class. Read them! He mentioned Ernest Becker's "The Denial of Death" and I shivered as I read it. His talks (not lectures) get good when he applies Becker to the text. Now I'm going to hurt his feelings: his application of physics to literature is wishful reading and a borderline scientism. But he's cool.
Took Inventing Death. A very intense, very emotionally taxing class, but also incredibly stimulating and enlightening. A rare class that will honestly change your life. Professor Mauro is well-versed in the literature and is always concerned with the well-being of his students. If you think you can handle the class, it's well worth it.
Last of the Mohicans is love. Last of the Mohicans is life. Very thorough with going through movies and terms while watching. Get used to taking notes while listening and you'll be fine
Be prepared to have you entire way of thinking about conciseness challenged. The text for this class and Mauro's in depth lectures on the text leave you wondering, about your place in the world. Seriously, people dropped the class because they started questioning their spirituality. He's a tough grader, and there is no B-Sing a paper.
Easy class- show up, take quiz on text reading every day (use quizlet to study), watch film + take notes. Movies were interesting & class opened my eyes to different film techniques. He's super passionate about them too & jokes around. Just do readings or you wont pass.
You have to show up and do the reading every class or youll never pass. Hes really good at explaining anything youre confused about and shows pretty okay movies.
If you're at all serious about learning about film, I'd take a pass on this class. Mauro doesn't show films that you can really take seriously. His attendance policy is also the no excuse one, so he won't even excuse it if it's a flat tire, fam emergency, etc. He's a fairly alright grader, however. Loves to hear himself speak
I took him for FIL2000 once a week on wednesdays. He is a very good professor and very well spoken. In this class if you show up and do the reading you dont even have to really study for the midterm or final because you will know the content.
He was really interesting and overall my favorite Lit teacher
Could be a hit or miss for many, however hes an Interesting professor with a real passion for literature and film. Hes a solid choice if youre open-minded to new ways of thinking. His grading criteria for papers is a bit vague, but he gives extra credit for going to the biweekly MOTH, as well as Extra credit quiz questions.
Dr. Mauro was an amazing professor! We had quizzes every class, so make sure the reading is done. However, Dr. Mauro provided bountiful extra credit opportunities, such as extra credit quiz questions or seeing free movies with MOTH. His discussions and "lectures" were very interesting and insightful. You can see that he's very passionate.
We had a quiz on the reading every class which kinda sucked but he didn't make us write a lot of papers and also gave out extra credit opportunities and let us watch movies of our choice at the end of the semester!
THIS IS THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD! I haven't had the opportunity to take another one of his classes due to Covid, but I am DEFINITELY going to be taking one! His class is very challenging, but in the best way. I came out of that class a better writer for sure. He is funny and inspiring. Very understanding, but he expects you to try your best
Professor Mauro is definitely an interesting guy. He really tries to get you to think outside the box and he provides very interesting stories to read throughout the semester. As long as you take notes on details of the readings for the quizzes it is super easy, he is kind of specific in what he looks for in his essays but they are not hard.
It was an alright class. I'm a fan of literature but I didn't personally enjoy a lot of our reads. Quiz on readings during every class (can't skim and do well, open ended questions), and most of your paper content is discussed thru the lectures. Show up, listen, read, and you'll do well. He grades papers harder, but just listen to the feedback.
We had reading quizzes after everything in class, but I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Mauro is a great professor and very knowledgeable! I would recommend taking his class!
his gives a lot of reading and homeworks. quiz everyday for class. very annoying!
We had to do quizzes every day in this class! He only gives you 10 minutes for 3-5 FRQs, and if you join the Zoom late too bad you're gonna have much less time to take the quiz. He also makes us read lots of poems/stories every single class, most of them are not attention-grabbing at all. If you don't read them 3+ times C is highest grade youll get
Pretty chill professor, you read stuff that he sends you and have a quiz on it during class zoom meeting, and he also has essays no tests. The essays are persuasive based so if you like arguing this class is for you. Overall really chill dude.
Mauro is a nice guy, but if you want to learn about literature this is not the class. He likes to go on rants for the entire class and he never really gets anywhere. He assigns readings and quizzes every class which can get to be a lot too.
Mauro's class is challenging but rewarding. The quizzes can be intense, but engaging with the material pays off. Unstuck AI and the free textbook were super helpful for prepping. Definitely worth the effort - I've never enjoyed a class more.
RIP Professor Mauro, you will be missed.
RIP Professor Mauro, you were one of the best professors of my first year here at UNF.
