An interesting class to take with a teacher that has interesting views. I would think he would be teaching at Berkly.
Very clear with own perspectives. Thorough lectures with great detail. Tests are graded hard with essay part and vocab part. Mainly memorizing history and the tests will be fine
I had such a great time in his class. He made the subject very clear, and even though i took this class alomost a year ago i still remember most of the material. He is very patient and gets the job done.
Lots of short essay exams, and a number of writing assignments along with reading. He's a firm grader initially, but hang in there.. it gets easier. If you want to really learn history, and enjoy it -- he's a great choice. He could give more feedback.
Awesome teacher. I never thought I would have such a grasp on history. He is very concise and makes things very clear. I wish I had taken him this semester, too. =/
great teacher, a bit too liberal for my liking but a hell of a guy anyhow. only a few essays to write, better than jones! i would recommend him
Hard class. Six books to read for class. One 12 page research paper.Provides good study guides for essay exams, but doesnt exactly say what he expects to see in your answers. A little impatient and strict, a LOT liberal.
Very hard class. A lot of work. But the teacher REALLY know his subject.
He is a fascinating story teller, but he gives a lot of homework. The reading can be overwhelming at times! Overall I enjoyed his views on History.
He is very helpful when you ask him for help. One thing your should remember about his essays are that he required the same 3 field: economics, political, and social all to be in his essays.
This guy knows his history... although there is a lot of note taking and reading... but he gives you test questions before... and if you answer em before the test he'll look over them...
Newman was a terrible teacher!!!! I took him during election time and he would go off on policial tangents that have nothing to due with history! When you went to him to ask a question he made you fell like you were the dumbest person alive for not getting something he went over. Don't take Newman!
Newman is an excellent instructor. If you want a refreshing perspective on U.S History, coupled with a helpful and professional instructor, then Newman is the way to go. As for cell phones going off in class: It's just common courtesy to silence or turn off your cell phone while in the classroom.
To succeed in this class a student must work hard. He is a fair grader and knowledgeable on the topic.
Most heartless prof I have ever had. Newman is creul and close-minded. He requires too many books for the class (which I was unable to sell back) which made the class cost more than it was worth. He is a hard grader and was unhelpful when I need his help outside of class. The class was unnecessarily difficult. I will never ever take him again.
People, this is a TRANSFERABLE class, meaning it counts as university credit. At UC all history, incl. lower-division, classes have lots of books; my current has 12 and a 21 pg paper. If you can’t handle this, don’t take university level classes.
I am taking Newman right now and I find his class very interesting and I am not a big history buff. He has made it fun and I actually want to go to class to hear him lecture. There is a lot of reading and note-taking, but all around it's not a hard class IF you pay attention and take good notes.
Hard teacher. Not very nice. Most lectures felt unorganized and one-sided. Tests and final were unnecessarily difficult...for a JC history class it was too hard (I am not at Davis for a reason!). Jones is a much better (and nicer) professor.
He is one of the most brilliant men I have met. He will present to you the real history that you were deprived of in public school. If you keep up on the reading and take good notes, this class is not hard. In other words..be prepared to work! He gives the tests/final questions out ahead of time(what more do you want??) Newman is the way to go!! ;)
Newman truely has a bias. All he ever talked about were minorities & problems in Am. hist.- how corrupt & abusive the govt has been/is to immigrants and Native Americans. His lectures were one-sided, unorganized & depressing. He's a hard grader & doesn't make it clear what he expects to see in papers/exams. He isn't really even a good teacher.
He can be very hard on students. He doesn't accept disrespect. I use material I learned in his class in all classes since then! Yeah it was hard, You pass if you are there and give a bit of effort. Not a class to sleep through. Too much reading for me to keep up with and I read well. Got a B. I liked his lectures. I used the extra credit.
Newmen is the best teacher at Cosumnes! I took him for 2 classes and I learned to much about history that I never even knew happened. I suggest you take him if you want to LEARN and you want to know the TRUTH about the US history!
This is a tough class if you dont show up or take notes. newman is very up front with you about what he expects.not much homework, however he required 9 books for my class, we were supposed to read them all, i read none of them, passed with a B, and could not sell any of them back. he changes his books every semester. cost me a lot of $.
Great teacher-can be a little impatient though. Take good notes!
i loved this class. I was not to excited about taking history but because you can tell he has passion for what he teaches it pulls you in more. There were a lot of books, i never really read and still got a B... he handed out test reviews which made the tests sooo much easier. He was a big help to me and i wish i would have taken him for hist 313!
Why must I buy so many texts, one of which he has created w/ his friend on CD ROM, is selling in the bookstore and I am forced to buy for $50?? Not cool, I cannot support his need to make money off of students who have enough to buy already w/o him making up new things that are "required" to be purchased and line his pockets!!
Good teacger. Go to his office and he will dicuss the test questions with you. He dose have very strong opions on things that you might have to egnore if you do not agree. But over all a good class and teacher.

Very bad teacher.. will never take another one of his classes again...
I think he's ok...a bit hard and fast-paced so if you plan on taking his class, be prepared to jot down notes because he doesn't write on the board! start practicing writing fast too! he doesn't like people sleeping in his class, so don't sleep coz he calls on people who does! gives quiz and exam questions ahead of time and that's a plus!
He's an awesome teacher; totally laid back and will help you out with anything you need. I also found out he is a pretty good softball player in Davis.
Not a very nice teacher...wants you to take a lot of notes and I am was always worried about writing down something he said rather than just listening to him. I didn't do very well on most of the tests and I didn't do the final the best that I could have, and I still almost got a "C"!!! Kinda weird.
Great teacher! He knows his stuff and how to prepare you for transfer to the university. He's interesting and challenging. Now quite as skilled as Jones or Patching but scholarly and clear. He's fair and keeps you going. Don't mind the people who complain, they just can't do the work. It is the same in a lot of classes. He's super. Take him!
nice guy, interesting lectures, just adds a little too much of his personal politics
He's a good teacher, however, he does make you buy 2 cd's by him and his friend that cost nearly $100. I am a college student and even though I could not afford them i bought them because he said that we had to have them. I realized later that he was the author of one of them. Other than that, he is a good teacher.
i really dont like his class i guess thats cause you have to pay attention!

dude has a PONYTAIL! nuff said. left wing tree hugger all the way. he knows his stuff and i respect him.
More a liberal propagandist than a history teacher (a bit much for me) BUT his exams are EASY - short answer questions only - high schoolish - AND HE GIVES YOU THE QUESTIONS IN ADVANCE! Divide them up with your friends, outline, memorize, done! Don't buy all the books -you won't need them. No big essays - and no need for notes if you can write OK
He gives a list of the test questions 3 weeks ahead of time, so dont do the reading in detail until you get that list. His lectures are focused, if he goes on a tangent he catches himself. And he's very helpful and clear when you ask a question. I'd recommend him, good for general ed. 3 tests, 1 research paper, not too much.
interesting and educational lectures. however, can go on a political tangent. he's very one sided when it comes to politics (democratic). i didn't appreciate it because current politics had nothing to do with history of latin america. lucky thing that he's cute or else i would've disliked the class a bit.
Mr. Newman is a great guy. He makes you work. notes notes notes notes notes notes quiz notes notes notes notes notes notes test notes notes notes notes notes ... you get the picture. The most open-minded teacher I have ever had. Dispite his extreme liberal views, he always mentions that he came to his views from his own experience, and we come to our own conclusions by our own experience. He understands different people live different lives.
Extra chill out of the classroom willing to help on research. But when in lecture goes into Mussolini like rants about politics. Which didnt offend me because i mostly aggree with his politics ,but could enrage or alienate right leaning students. Be prepared to write, tests are simple and if you read you'll pass, overall great teacher.
One of the best teachers at CRC. Prof. Newman is very help and entertaining. He really knows his stuff. The test are easy, he gives you the questions ahead of time. I'd recommend him over any history teacher. He doesn't sugarcoat history or political topics he tells it like it is and its very hard to find a teacher that is so honest!!!
Very interesting and knowledgeable--but very work intensive! Lectures are always informative but sometimes disorganized--especially when he goes off track on a political rant! But his passion for the subject makes up for it. The semester goes by way too fast...
I heard he was a hard teacher going into the class. I came out with a B overall and an A on the research paper that I typed up the night before. He'll give you the test/quiz questions weeks in advance. Very helpful; write good notes and you won't need the books. If you aren't good with notes, bring a tape recorder and leave it next to him.
I've taken Newman for Hist 320 and 321, he is awsome thats all I have to say. First day of class he comes out tuff. After that, all the dumb kids are weeded out class and it becomes cake, and fun. He is a very interesting individual.
straight forward, notes, test, essay, notes, test, essay, expects you to know what you're talking about when answering essay questions or tests, be specific and you'll pass
Going into the class I was a bit nervous knowing he is a hard core liberal. I ended up loving the class. His lectures are great, no homework, offers random extra credit. Showing up to class is a must. If you don't like writing essays then I wouldn't recommend him because that is what all the tests are. He prepaires you well for transfering.
I'm still mourning the ponytail...but I have even more respect Jason. Awesome professor and person! Asante sana, bwana! :) (Thank you very much)
Personally he was not one of the better teachers i have had. But if your good at long essays and reading you would like him. We had to do a lot of long papers which was hard for me. and he was VERY VERY strict abuot being on time.i would get there two minutes after class started and he would call me out or others who walked in late. All lecture
In my opinion, Jason Newman is a hard professor. I dropped his class after 3 weeks of attendance. He requires you to read 5 or 6 of his textbooks. Take good notes and best to get a recorder because he talks fast. He doesn't assign homework, except two 7pg papers, final exam, and 2-in class essay midterms.
He is a excellent teacher his lectures are very interesting even though his lectures are all oral and he speaks very fast. He slows down if you ask and his tests are pretty easy as long as you take good notes your fine without the textbook. If you slack off you won't do good in his class you have to attend class everyday.
Very far left liberal but his class is great and definitely keeps you interested in the subject. A lot of reading and note taking required. All test are essay format based upon notes and reading. No class attendence kept, but impossible to pass class without attending because you need the notes. Good U.C CSU prep class. Fully recommend Newman.
Loved the class. Has a biased opinion of things but lets you know that. Must attend class because half the midterm questions are straight from lectures and in-class videos. Very helpful and will even read essays and midterm answers beforehand to give you feedback. You have to work hard but I recommend the class.
Newman is a great teacher, very knowledgeable in the subject he teaches. Though he requires you to know alot of information for his tests they are actually very easy. As long as you pay attention, go to class everyday, take good notes, and keep up on the readings he assigns there is no reason someone would fail his class.
Lectures are all oral.He shows lots of interesting videos.Tests are 2-essay questions. He gives a list of 6-10 questions that 2 will be picked from for the test.So you have to prepare for all 6-10 cos you don't know which 2 he'll pick.If you keep up w/reading & have notes, you'll be fine for preparing for the tests.Extremely helpful.
Very good teacher i tooks one of his classes again because all his tests are essay based and usually on books that he assigns you to read. i passed witha B and dint even read the books.
All exams are essays. Two 7 page research papers. That's about it....he doesn't really take attendence. He is far-far left and will tell you that. He tries to present both sides of an argument but he still comes off very liberal. He doesn't try to hide it tho and doesn't make you feel bad if you don't share his views.
hes hard. i wont lie and there are alot of lecture notes. hes exactally what he says he will be. but hes extremely helpful, and he really teaches you. and makes the class intresting with descussions and answers questions when ever you need it.
Dr Newman is the best there is. It is a real treat to be able to have this caliber of a teacher at a community college. he loves his subject. if you take him, (which you should) be ready for a lot of notes.
By far my favorite teacher! I took both 312 and 313, and can't begin to tell you how much I learned. His class isintellectual, challenging and fun. Be prepared to think.
he is very nice. He is a good lecturer, and a very articulate guy. I actually like his class, although you have to read alot. but his test is not that hard. I didn't even read, and got a decent grade on my test. But overall, i would recommend taking his class, cause it is really fun.
Hard class. He told, that my paper is written for A, but he can not give me more than C, because English is not my first language. In September there were about 90 students, in the end may be 30 or less left, the others droped or fail. May be 2 or 3 A's ... He is grading essays not for knowing history, but for your English
You will learn a lot in his class if you attend his class. The lecture are very helpful but you still have to do the reading. He grade the test hard but I dont think he really concentrate on the grammar. However, for the 6 pages essay, he grade really hard. If your essay is really good but you have grammar and past tense, then he probably give u a
I wasnt sure about him cause what I read about him on this site, but he turned out to be a pretty good teacher. The class of very interesting.
Dr. Newman was a very good teacher. I had learned a lot from his lecture. His very articulate teacher, want's everything precise on paper. Test(s) are hard, but is you study, you'll be ok. Attendance is a must, take a clear notes; I recommend to tape record his lecture, it helps. Read books in advance/ notes. I've got an "A" in class
I thought at the time that the class was hard and he was mean, but after i have taken the next level with a different teacher, i apprieciate Newman a lot. come to think of it, his lectures were very interesting and great! he gives excellent lectures. I did not even use the book and i got a B
best class! great professor! he made history interesting! the lessons that you will learn in class will be stuck in your head forever in someway! i recommend taking him if you have the motivation to go to his class everyday and learn!
Newman, is great on lecture and discussion. Only thing, he is extremely hard when it comes to tests, papers, or any of his assignments. He will tell you what it took him 10 years (hello PH.D) to learn and expect you memorize all of it and say it back to him precisely in written format; primarily through tests. (Hello blue books) :-)Enjoy!
If you want an "A", don't take his class. Out of 90+ students, only 2 or 3 got an A. But if you're one of these "ohh, if I get a "C" it's great" then take his class. Some of us actually care about our grades. By the way Professor Newman THIS IS COMMUNITY COLLEGE, NOT UC DAVIS! So stop treating us like it is! We don't party and live in dorms...
Very hard class, but excellent professor. Totally in command of what he's teaching, and masterful at answering strange questions students ask. Exams are tough and you have to be extremely prepared. I ended up dropping, but I have nothing but good things to say about Professor Newman.
An awesome teacher. His test are reasonable but you have to study really hard. He give two to three 6 pages essay to write on book that you've read. He grade really hard on the 6 pages essay. He take off letter grade for grammar or other puncutation. He is strict when it comes to those things.
Excellent professor. Teaches a college class, not a high school environment and no ridiculous assignments. There are one or two research papers and several essay tests. Provides a list of test questions in advance, passing grade easily attainable with proper preparation. Frequent office hours, very helpful. Recommended.
good instructor, all verbal notes.make sure to take alot of notes because most of the questions on the essay exams are from notes.
One of the best professors I've had at CRC (even compared to the ones at CSUS). You will learn alot from his class. He keeps it real even with his grading system. He gets you ready for "college life" and he can embarass you pretty good if you're a wise-a$$. Bring a voice recorder - it will help you with your notes if you miss anything.
His opinions are one-sided and he often talks about things not related to his subject. This is the worst class I have ever taken.
Professor Newman has taught me a lot more this semester than I ever expected. I appreciate his candor and his dedication. He is a great instructor if you want a challenge.
i really liked this teacher. he gives you information in deatail. very clear and easy to hear. i like the videos he played in the class. for a teacher who can keep me interested in a 3 hour class is doing a good job. overall he is good at what he does...and there were only 5 assignments including tests. so it's a typical college course.
Awesome teacher. He knows his stuff. He grade farily. GOOD teacher and care about the student. He gives question ahead of time so you can be prepare. NO good work at all. again, awsome teacher.
Very good teacher. Best history teacher I've had at either CRC or CSUS. Attendance isn't mandatory but you have to show up because most test questions come straight from the lectures. Always there for help or feedback on tests or papers. Take advantage of the fact he's willing to be so helpfull and a good grade is guaranteed.
Seriously the best professor that I have ever had at CRC. I entered the class with no desire in history at all and left the class with tons of information and a whole new appreciation for it. This class is a lot of work, but seriously sick it out and you will NOT regret it. It was incredible.
He is extremely liberal and some students like that. If you are conservative do not take his class. It would be a frustrating experience. Also, he can be mean.
Pros: Teaches at university level; exceptional knowledge of presented material; challenging exams. Cons: Treats students poorly; way too opinionated; too many text books (expensive) with several typos in the text. Professor Mukantabana and Dr. Jones are just as challenging, but are much more professional, polished, and helpful.
Very good teacher, clear in what he is teaching, if you want help just ask after class and he would stop whatever hes doing to help you in any way possible. Very cool likes to joke, seems mean but he isint. just do the readings and you should do fine in the exams prepares you for university level very well!!!
Very GOOD teacher! Take good notes and record the lectures and you should do fine. I went in with no interest learning about the United States history but came out with some interesting facts about our past. Great class!
I took Jason in the summer and although the class was very fast paced, i left knowing more about history than i thought i already knew. He is tough so if you are not serious about it then don't take him but if you are totally committed to learning then he is the perfect professor to have.
THIS GUY IS AWESOME. Prepare to work your butt off, but also prepare to learn more than you ever have before. If you're looking for an easy teacher with multiple choice tests DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. But if you're planning on transferring to a 4-year take his class and taste the future!
Great teacher! He is very clear on his lectures and very understanding. If you show up to class and at least take notes from the lectures for the tests you will most likely pass. He is a hard grader though. All tests are essay forms and write at least 2 analysis papers. Take him. Great teacher!
GREAT TEACHER!!! Very helpful you just need to talk to him and go to his office and or email. He is very interesting and makes history a great subject. Go to every class, be early or on time, raise your hand in class and answer his questions. He gives alot of test answers in class and tells you what he is going to pick for the test if your there. B
Mr. Newman is a great teacher. He is difficult and you should be well prepared to write papers(ENGWR 300 recommended). Mr. Newman is very intelligent and he's my favorite teacher thus far in college. Good luck to those of you who wish to take his class.
I took Professor Newman's class in Spring 2008. I learned more from him than any other instructor ever. He knows a lot. Be prepared to learn. He pushed me to realize I can work harder than I thought. I will always be grateful for that.
Prof. Newman, understands students need and is willing to make arragements to postpone exams or give them early. He makes himself available during office hours and via email.
This class is very interesting. It requires a lot of work and note taking. You have to write two seven page essay, three essays for each exam (2 exams all together), and the final is four essays. His hottness helps keeps you awake during clase.
Recommend him only if you want to listen to an extremly intelligent person. 2 essay tests, 2 essays and the final are the only points. You should take an english course before taking him. and love to read because there is alot of reading.
He's alright you would think it's hard after the begining first test you'll probably get an F or D but do better later on. Going to class is not mandatory but you have to do well on your tests.
I don't know what my grade is yet but I'm pretty sure I'm failing. That's just because I don't really put the effort I needed to pass. I do recommend him because he is an excellent teacher. He really challenges your critical think. The only thing that I don't really like is the study guide, there are like 9 questions on and he'll only use 3 on exam
He is a great professor. I took him for the history of Mexico.I learned so much from this course. I received an "A", but it was a lot of work. He is a strict, but an understanding teacher. He wants his students to succeed.
Go to class, and take notes. You'll do fine
I took this class in summer school. Two 7 page papers. Two exams, and he gives you 10 areas to study before the each exam. He is not the easiest professor he demands a lot. But if you put a lot of effort into getting an A in the class you will. He also makes the subject interesting. Don't be intimidated by other reviews saying hes impossible.

Prof. Newman is SUPER intelligent and obviously an excellent speaker. He is very knowledgeable and attendance is not mandatory. He doesn't give notes, just oral lectures. Interesting videos. Lots of handouts. HARD GRADER. So little points you can earn, only comprised of essays and midterms!! SUPER HARD CLASS in my opinion. I dropped.
he is a very good teacher...he taught "the UC DAVIS way" its all essay based and he requires you to write about 3-4 pages per question on his exams and there is always 3 questions...he is a hard grader but his classes are very interesting I learned alot more than I was expecting to. I had him for two history classes and I would take him again!!!
had him 2 semestr ago. He's kinda hard, but iv realized that I hav used many of his lectures in general discuss with friens. He's only hard cuz ppl dont do the work. Thers only 3 essays & 3 exams in the whole semester. Ther prudy simple. Exams only hav 3 questions you need to ans and essay is 7 pgs, but so much time to do, plus he's very hot!!
He is great teacher. i am a history major and he offered to have a meeting with me to discuss my major. his lectures are easy to follow but you must come to class everyday. the tests are based almost one hundred percent on lectures. 2 seven page papers. 2 midterms and i final
He is a fantastic teacher. Very thought provoking. Not very difficult he gives you the essay topics for the exams. Lot of reading. Great teacher, supportive, smart.
Don't take this class if you are 1.slacker, 2. have a hard time listening to people that have a large vocab/speak fast. You have to REALLY pay attention, and it's distracting as hell when people ask him him to repeat things a million times. He's friendly enough to do it, though. Don't take away from other people's learning experience, please.
Ignore the last post. He's challenging and gives a lot of info. He does a good job. You just have to study.
his class can be fun, but make sure you attend, he has no mercy for missed lectures and is very hard to contact via email. Not the first essay but the last two, he really pays attention to detail, if you miss one point it can cost you the whole grade. Ouch! But he's knows his stuff, being caucasian in an Afro-Amer. history class :)
He sure gets irked easily. He sure pays attention to every little detail on your paper too, so make sure you reread your stuff.
very fair & understanding, and always included interesting facts on the subject he was discussing. he made US history interesting.
I learned so much in this class. I loved the challenge. I loved studying with cool people also. Recommended to everyone.
He is a great teacher. You can tell that he is very passionate about history. His teaching method is different from other. He tells you what he want you to study and if you do it, you will do well on the test. Basically, you know what will be on the test so its really up to you if you want to do great.
Excellent professor, very smart, knows what he's talking about. If you can't handle him, you're screwed in your college career. READ THE BOOKS HE ASSIGNS. And I would recommend to be done with at least one semester of English. Lots of memorizing, lots of writing, lots of reading. You're not getting anything less than a four year university class.
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! take him!! if you go to class and take notes you will for sure pass the class. he wants you to pass and will help you as much as he can to see that you do!! the first couple of days youmight think he is a little crazy but hanh in there because he is awesome! is teaching stlye will benefit you too!
EVERY TEACHER PAYS ATTENTION TO ALL THE DETAILS!!! this is college! grow up and proof read your paper and stop being lazy!
good teacher. thurough and knows what he's talking about. 2 exams and 2 papers are the only graded work so notes are a major must. He gets very into his lectures and narrerates everything he does haha...he says "thats a good question" to almost every question..
I love this class and will take this teacher again if I have the chance. He is very passionate about the subject and interesting. It does require alot of notetaking and you cannot afford to miss a single class.I did not mind putting in the extra effort required because I really liked what I was learning.I hope to learn as much in every college class
One of the single worst professors I've ever been instructed by. He's singlehandedly turned American History into a sixteen week guilt trip against white men; minimizing the AMERICAN REVOLUTION And CIVIL WAR to half a class each in favor of the horrors of slavery. He also is one of the least sympathetic instructors of all time to student hardships.
Re: the last post. If you wanted to learn more about the Civil War, take 313 instead of 312. Better yet, do the GD reading. He was excessive in pre-Columbus native history(3/16 weeks), but otherwise the lectures & readings were well balanced. He has been my MOST sympathetic prof, but dont expect a break if you werent a genuinely good student b4 DUH
Professor Newman is a great teacher, but you must attend his classes! He lectures every class, and the essay tests are mostly from the lecture notes. He forces you to learn the material by giving you possible essay questions for the midterm in advance. He is always willing to help you on assignments thru email if you give him some time.
His teachings are very important and his lectures are very deep. It's only hard if you dont pay attention and try to do a good job. He is very hot and very intellectual. I would change my major for him.
Demanding teacher, but teaches the material well. A bit self absorbed, but a quality quality teacher overall.
Thinks you love history and him as much as he does. Pretends to care. Super strict!!! But if you work reallllllllllllllllllllllllllly hard you can get an A!!
If you want to learn about slavery then take this class. If you're a white male then you are going to probably do a terrible job, he's kind of a self hating white person. This class did nothing for me but teach me about how the white people are horrible. The class is very hard and unless you know exactly what he wants you to write you'll fail!!!
BIGGEST JERK on campus! He thinks that memorization is learning. Is rude to many of the students in class and I spent many nights awake just studying for his exams. Newman should teach parrots, because they are the only creatures capable of repeating what he wants them to memorize!!
He's detailed in his lectures. Not recomended to take if you are white. Anti white even though he is white. Irritating. Called other students negligent. Also he openly said he's a Marxist-so if your right winged watch out. Grades hard too.
I enjoyed his class .... I took a 320 at City college and it was tooo ghetto! (Including the PROFESSOR!) On top of that the professor made us read senseless amounts of reading and textbook VERSES NEWMAN! Take Newman he gets to the point and doesnt READ FROM HIS NOTES!!!! URGH!
Very demanding. The class is not difficult because he prepares you for the midterms and gives plenty of opportunity to proof any papers before turned in. In order to pass you can't miss any classes; all lecture. Mild text reading, again all lecture.
Professor Newman is a teacher that is really strict. His class is mostly lecture, which is very clear, gets into details, and comes with good examples. This class isn't easy, but if your here on time, take notes, and study, you will have no problem getting an A
Newman teaches well, but buying the books is a must.
Newmans a great teacher that makes history very interesting and lectures aren't ever boring. For his tests he'll give you 9 essay questions and choose 3 the day of the test. As long as you study you'll have no problem. Also don't miss class, most of the test questions come from lecture! Also no HW ever! If you ?'s dont be afraid to ask!
I dont know what is wrong with all of these other people. Professor Newman has intentionally designed his class to be the way that it is in order to help his students use it as a stepping stone towards higher learning. Grade is dependent on two essays and three tests (the way it is at the UC level). Lecture style is that of a UC Professor as well.
Such a cutie pie!
Newman is a very good professor, however, he does lecture quite a lot which will require you to take notes. He is always willing to repeat things for people who ask and gives you study guides well in advance for each midterm and final. Not an easy class, but so long as you study, it isn't very hard.
If you are a poor writer, have poor attendance, or take poor notes, this is not the class for you. If you'd like a holistic view of history, with a no holds barred angle of teaching, this professor will challenge and truly educate you. All exams and assignments are essays, so be prepared to write and read extensively.
I TOOK NEWMAN FOR BLACK HISTORY AND HE WAS EXTREMELY RUDE. I SAT IN THE FRONT AND HE ALWAYS FOUND SOME RUDE REMARK TO SAY. ALTHOUGH HE IS VERY INTO HIS LECTURES I DO NOT FEEL HE IS VERY HELPFUL. I WOULD NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU ARE OPINIONATED.
Hard class not for people who do not want to learn. Newman knows his history and you must learn yours in his class . Lot of pressure writing!
really great professor. smart guy. if your looking for an easy class then dont take him! his classes are tough but very fun. his lectures are interesting to the point that they make you want to attend class and it isnt such a pain. his tests are tough but if you study then youll do fine.
You must: GO TO CLASS, TAKE NOTES, STUDY YOUR NOTES. If you do these things, not only will you get a good grade, but you will also gain a great understanding of early U.S. history. Great class, it was hard, but I would take it again. He is engaging and shows you a view of history from the point of the minority not the majority which is refreshing.
I was recommended to take him and am glad I did. I attended every day, took notes, and only read the sections of the reading necessary for the essay questons. His tests are essay based and assigns two essays. I read the books a week before the essays were due and crammed for every test. Procrastination = A in the class for me. He's cool too.
I took Native peoples of California because of my Native American Heritage and because I thought it would be interesting. I enjoyed the material, and the lectures was interesting, but I did not enjoy Newman at all. He is very monotone and a bit rude. Don't ask him for help or to use the restroom, for some reason he only lets particular people go.
I loved the class and learned alot.He is very passionate about this topic and knows the topic well. He is a fair professor. So much writing!! Lectures are to long. For us that can't memorize dates and events this class is very hard to pass his exam tests. He demands respect and is strict with his rules.I love his rule no cellphones.Great professor.
His pic here does him no justice, he's very attractive. Super intellect, great voice, extremely helpful, even lends out textbooks-1st come, 1st serve basis. loved his class GO TO LECTURES only way 2 pass n take n review notes he's a very fair grader n since work n test r essays this class also sharpens writing skills. one of best prof I ever had!
On the first day all he talked about was himself and how he graduated from UC Davis and about his daughter. he uses lot of books and kept on scaring students how his class is hard and that he is sure lot of students are going to drop out.
This class requires you to be on top of your toes. Going to class and taking clear notes is a must. Most people say he talks fast which is why I recorded every session--helpful when studying for tests. He gives you a list of essay questions before the test and 3 of them will be on the test (you would be stupid not to write it out beforehand)
I am an ESL student but I got an A from this class. He had high expectation about the paper as well as the essay.Three exams and three papers plus extra credit (option). attendance is not mandatory but come to class if you want an A. Do not expect you'll get an A easily from the first exam or paper. Spend time and study as he wants you to.
I'm ESL student. I really appreciate Prof.Newman because of his hardworking and his knowledge.Come to his class and listen to his lecture, then you'll do well in his class. I got an A from this class which I almost dropped when I got an B for the first writing assignment. Do not drop! He graded very hard at the beginning but thing will get easier
took this class w/ no interest in history bc ive always thought it was boring. he made it SO interesting & is by far one of the BEST professors i have ever had. my class was @ 7:30 a.m.& i loved going. he is an AWESOME professor.offers extra credit.exams r essay based & if u take good notes & take his advice in how prep, you'll do fine. i got an A
Newman gives extremely clear lectures that can and will be used to study for exams. He tries to be as available and helpful to students as he can. Adds anyone to his class, waitlisted or not. Passionate about what he teaches. Dislikes rude students who text and come to class late; makes sense, because a prof. this smart/helpful deserves respect.
He is a great teacher it is mandatory you go if you want all the notes. if not then its on you he is very helpful and understanding ad very intellegent and fun to talk to
I took all his classes, GREAT. Lectures everything that is on the exam. If you take good notes, and show up, you will get a good grade. His exams are all essay based, and at least one question is based on your own readings of the book. SO make sure you read, and also he gives the midterm outlines in advance to study, so study them ALL. RECOMMEND!!!
Took the summer class. Class consisted of 2 six page essays based on the books required to read. 3 in class essay. He gives you the questions that will be on the exam, but only chooses four. You won't know what questions he'll choose, so study everything. Barely used the book. Grades fairly. If you're an auditory learner, then you'll pass his class
This professor is VERY MEAN if he does not like you! If you're an older adult, he's a lot nicer to you but if you are around 18-25, he's very mean if you do something wrong such as show up late to class. He assumes things like you were talking when you actually weren't & does not listen to what you have to say! He grades tests & papers very hard!
A GREAT lecturer. You could never fall asleep in his class no matter how much you want to.Test questions are mostly from the lectures, the rest from readings that he assigned. Come to class everyday, take good notes and you will do just fine.If you show him you take the studying serious,he would be VERY UNDERSTANDING. I learned a lot from this class
He is one of the best professors that I have ever had. He give all test as essay questions and requires 3 papers but the information and enthusiasm are amazing. If you are not serious about learning skip his class but if you want to learn and be challenged you have to take this professor.
I will never forget this instructor. Newman is one of the only professors who encourages students to challenge what history books say and to make modern correlation. His tests can be bit too specific at times however, they aren't extremely hard.
Great teacher! Does not take BS. Don't be late to his class, do all readings, be respectful and take his class seriously.
Man the best professor in crc but not that easy. He truly knows his stuff and is very open minded to anything.
Best history professor I've had yet! I'm usually not big on history courses but this class was the exception to that. Dr. Newman is an awesome lecturer, never ever boring and always makes the key points really obvious for upcoming tests and papers. Can't say enough good things!
love this teacher! took him spring semester. 2 assigned readings, 2 papers and 3 writing exams. He Makes things very interesting and if you attend class and take notes you can pass with a very good grade. notes are very important. they will help you for your exam. TAKE HIM! he is my favorite history teacher! Wished he thought other history courses.
The best history Professor i ever had. His lectures are clear and never boring. He always makes his lectures interesting and makes you wanna learn more. Taking notes is must to pass his class because all of the exams are from lectures. He will assign you books that you have to read and write 5 pages of essay. I highly recommend him for everyone.
Prof Newman was a great instructor! Every class session was interesting. If you're a good note taker, you'll do fine in his class. Read the books he assigns! He also assigns a few essays & tests. However he's not an easy grader, but it's good b/c he's prepping his students for a UC/CSU setting.
He is a great teacher. Very clear on materials & knows what he's talking about. Attendance & note taking is a MUST. Three 5-paged essays on his 3 assigned books.3 in-class essays as exam, but you must be fully prepared because you have 3 questions for 1st & 2nd exams & 4 questions for final. Gives room for extra credit. You have to work hard for A
He is a great Professor. Very clear on materials & knows what he's talking about. Attendance and note taking is a MUST. his classes are very interesting.go to class and take good notes. there are 3 essays, not bad. choose a prompt that you like. i read the parts that i needed to talk about in the paper and got A's. study hard for the in class papers. he gives prompt a couple weeks in advance write all the prompts out b/c you dont know what he is going to pick.
He is very tough at grading. He knows exactly what he is teaching sometimes can sound to robotic. He is extremely passive aggressive and makes very sarcastic comments even with people that are just walking by. He may try to be funny but isn't. He looks nothing like his picture. But he is 50 something. I'd say take him as a last resort.
INTIMIDATING CLASS AT FIRST BUT PROFESSOR NEWMAN IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE AND HIS LECTURES ARE AMAZING (PERSONAL AND EDUCATIONAL). HE MADE "HISTORY" FUN AND EXCITING. IF YOU WANT QUALITY EDUCATION, TAKE PROFESSOR NEWMAN!
Prof Newman is good at giving lectures but his grading is too hard.
Great teacher. I am taking his 312. He is honestly not even a hard grader, just do your work and go to class. I repeat GO TO CLASS. His test are all based on his lectures, you dont even need the book! It was a waste of my money :( You read three books, less than 160 pgs and do 3 papers and 3 test!
Professor Newman is one of the best professors at CRC! Even though History is my least favorite subject, I enjoyed every second of his lectures. He is always ready to help you. If you come to class regularly and take good notes, you will get nothing less than an A. He's flexible with due dates as well as long as you talk to him before hand.
Professor Newman is great. He really knows his stuff so be prepared to be heavily tested on the material. He seems uptight at the beginning but he's very helpful and wants you to succeed. He lets you email him your papers and gives you feedback on them, which is pretty cool in my opinion. Anyway, one word of advice DO NOT BE LATE!
Clearly knows his Subject, his grading isn't easy, but he grades well, and doesn't penalize you for small things. He does allow his personal politics and beliefs to influence how and what he teaches, and when it comes to subjects tangential to his, his ignorance can show. But, if you parse through the slant, and stick with it, you will learn a LOT.
Lets just say I hate history classes in general but he made it really interesting hes really into his subject. His class overall is pretty hard but if you work hard and study you will pass with an A.
As I enrolled in Professor Newman's African American history course, I was skeptical about whether or not his lectures would keep me interested. While history has never been my strong suit, Newman was helpful, informative, and always had answers to difficult questions. He feels very passionately about his work and offers a compelling course.
Amazing professor and a great class to take here at CRC. If you love to learn about African American history I recommend you take this course. He knows the subject very well, when he lectures it makes the class more interesting. Expect some long essays he cares more about credibility than grammar wise. History can be cool if you give it a chance.
Took History 312 with him. Got a 33% on the first test because I wasn't that prepared. He also doesn't tell you what he expects on his tests which is unfortunate. He was a really good professor, however, and I would recommend him if you want to actually learn the subject.
He requires 5 textbooks, the main text is of no use, the other books for the papers are absolutely mandatory. The papers are moderately easy. If you do not prepare yourself for the exams, you will not pass.
I've taken Newman for 3 semesters now and am ready for another class with him. Best history instructor.
He does do papers and hand written tests. There are no multiple choice tests so you have to know what you learn. He is not a harsh grader but study if you want to pass. He does amazing and in depth lectures into the topic that are amazing for the tests and papers. Papers are on books you read. Great teacher over all.
He is a remarkable professor who respects and prioritizes his students. He goes beyond teaching expectations and is passionate about it. There was a lot of reading for this class and papers, but the knowledge you will receive is completely worth it. He is definitely an exceptional instructor, and loves students who participate in the classroom.
History was never my thing but professor Newman changed that for me. Really made the class interesting and informative. At the beginning of he would share with us news and just kinda talk to us. Made plenty of GOOD jokes thourought the semest ( we all had horrible jokes from teacher). Really accomodating. Taking notes is a M U S T ! ! !
very thorough, get ready to take a lot of notes and get ready to read . do not fall asleep in this class he will have a fit . He really loves what he does , he does not mind debates but make sure you have your facts before you debate with him . very passionate about African American and Native American History. you will learn a lot
Professor Newman is an amazing teacher, he really pours his heart out in his into his lectures and brings to life how life was like for slaves living in America. He really spends a lot of time on making sure you understand his lectures and expects you to pay attention. I highly recommend this class for anyone who wants to learn about black history.
Newman made history enjoyable - his vast knowledge is intriguing and listening to him speak is magical. It sounds as if he's narrating a story. I am looking forward to taking the second half of his course. To have a white man be so passionate about the lives and history regarding people of color is appreciated and needed.
I hated history. But after I took him he changed my perspective. When I first started I was so sure I would fail bc everything looked so hard. But if you attend class, TAKE NOTES, and STUDY the info before the test YOU WILL PASS! I got A's on all my exams but I did stay up all night rewriting the practice essays. so yes PUT IN EFFORT but u wil pass
Professor Newman is by far the hardest professor I have taken at CRC! You are assigned 3 essays which are all a minimum of 6 pages. You have 3 midterms which are essay based. Each midterm has 6 Questions (on the days of the exam he randomly chooses 2 questions) which he expects to be answered in 3-4 pages. If you want to work hard take him.
Amazing professor, super clear, and he was always willing to review our paper. 3 exams, all lecture based (so take good lecture notes), and he gave us 5-6 questions to study, 2 of which would be on the exam. 4 essays, 6-page minimum, each based on a short 100-200 page book, no outside research, 6 prompts to choose from for each essay.
He clearly knows his stuff and makes lecture engaging. The only hw is the occasional paper based on the books, which are very easy and graded very lightly. Each test is 2 timed writes chosen from a list of 6 topics that he gives you a couple weeks ahead of time. Everything is covered in and ONLY in lecture, so if you skip you will not pass
professor Newman is amazing, he defiantly is a tough grader but he gives a good feedback on papers which are 6 page minimum, pretty heavy lectures, he is really passionate about what he teaches and he is always willing to help his students outside of the class. definitely would take him again.
Prof. Newman is an amazing history instructor. Very fascinating lectures, but you need to take good notes or record it or you won't be able to do the essays. 4 essays and 3 tests. No multiple choice, all short answers as essay format. If you know you're not a good writer or note taker, don't go for him, or you'll end up dropping.
Professor Newman is by far the best professor I've taken. There isn't a single question he can't answer about his lectures, and knows what he's talking about. You are assigned 4 essays throughout the class that serves as the homework. This was the first class that I never found myself looking at the clock; his super soothing voice helps a lot too!
Never had I thought I would ever pass history, I've taken it before once and had to dropped out. I tried to avoid it for as long as I could but it came time to take it again and Professor Newman was GREAT! He's so passionate about history. Awesome lecturer, the only way you won't pass is if you don't show up to class. Also take good notes!!!
Awesome professor! His lectures are clear and interesting especially because he would share his family history. I work nights but I did not mind waking up super early to attend his lectures. He invited a Hiroshima bomb survivor to our class and it was absolutely life changing. I will never forget my experience taking Professor Newman's class
Good understanding professor, being passionate about his job, helping students in need by checking the essays, study Guide , and having extra credit. If you do your work, come to lectures daily, engage with professor, you will definitely pass with an A.
Professor Newman was an amazing professor! I enjoyed going to his lectures. However beware of his exams, they were pretty tough. He usually gives you 8 exam questions and requires you to answer two or three, essay format. He does give you the questions beforehand so you can practice, but on exam day you don't know which ones you will get.
Newman is a wise formidable human being and this little passage is not nearly enough to describe him. His lectures are based on accurate facts with decisive evidence. He is engaging and tactful in his teaching strategies. I have an immense amount of respect for him and I don't think anyone loves his career more than him. -AAWorth
I thought the professor was great but, the final exam was a bit too much like three essay's in class, yeah no thanks.
Your grade is based on four essays and three tests. Assigned the first essay on the first day of class and boasts that he's the Faculty Union President literally everyday.
Just started this class and I don't know if I'll be staying. 3 LONG PAPERS, a million videos to watch and a quiz 4 page paper EVERY WEEK!! Only a 6 week online course and he thinks this is the ONLY class we're taking people got work too!!!! Awfully TOO MUCH WORK! Inconsiderate professor especially during a rough time in history! Don't take him!
If you miss a day, you'll miss a lot. 3 tests and a final. Four 6 page essays on books he assigned (not including textbook). I didn't buy the textbook, I didn't use it, and it was so expensive. TAKE GOOD NOTES. The tests are written timed essays. (Just remember the notes you took as a story, and write the story down in your test). BE ON TIME
Im an English major and his class felt like an English course with all the reading and 6 papers assigned. Very lecture heavy. Be prepared to take notes on everything. One of the hardest classes because you really need to know or remember all the events and details. I struggled with remembering all of the facts for the midterm and final.
I took Professor Newman over Summer '20. This course was an online class & it was pretty easy. You have to read every week & he gives you videos to watch so you could familiarize yourself with the events. Your quizzes are essays & so is your final. You do a lot of writing but it was an extremely easy course. He gives feedbacks on your essays.
Professor Newman is awesome. His assignments are relatively easy. Read the book and answer t the 2 questions to write about. In total it was 12 papers and 3 major essays. Very easy to get an A in the class if you do the work and read.
This online class was relatively easy compared to others. He only has about 15 assignments that he wants throughout the semester. Not a tough grader, but you have to put in the work if you want a good grade. I really liked the way this class was set up.
This class was more of an English class than anything. We did nothing but essays. Even if you go under just by a little bit in the required pages he will give you a failing grade on that assignment. Do not recommend! Horrible!
I took professor Newman for HIST311 for the fall of 2021 He is pretty good, I didn't take him w the lectures so I can't speak about his lectures. His class is hard for the pure fact that it requires a lot of essays. It's 12, 4-page essays (assigned on Thursday due on Monday) and 3, 6-page essays plus a 6-page final. overall pretty good teacher.
Lots of essays. More of an English class with all the essays we did. So be prepared to write.
If you are taking other heavy classes I won't recommend this, there are 3 pages or more essays every week and three 6 page essays throughout the semester! The book was boring but easy to read. If you sit down you could knock out the homework in an hour. I loved this class and he was good with extensions just email him!
There is a lot of reading and writing in this class, but it is worth taking this professor because he is not too picky when grading. He is very flexible with the scoring and gives feedback too. The topics are also interesting so the readings go by quickly. He also replies to emails quickly and helps you when needed.
