I enjoyed taking his Vertebrate Morphology Lab! You can tell that he loves what he does because he is enthusiastic in every class. Very thorough and fair!!
Best lab instructor I have ever had. Took time to help me figure out a way to study anatomy that works best for me. Always helpful and a super nice guy.
You can tell Ortega is very enthusiastic about his area of study. He's willing to explain anything and answer any question to help you understand what's going on. My only complaint is that he took an extremely long time grading, so that you didn't know your actual grade until basically the last week of class.
Best teacher I've ever had for anything, by far. Extremely enthusiastic and smart. Great class.
This guy makes lab very tough to get an A in. I took physiology lecture along with this lab and ended up studying much more for this lab than for the lecture, which isn't how it should be. He makes his quizzes extremely detailed and asks questions about the most obscene subjects. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR LAB, YOU'LL REGRET IT!
He's extremely enthusiastic and knowledgable. He's always available for help, whether you're confused about a topic from lecture or holding review sessions for exams. I learned more from him than Dr. Tipsmark. However, he's extremely slow with grading. My final is tomorrow, and he has yet to grade four assignments which makes me quite nervous.
He now teaches anatomy & his class is the WORST. This is the absolute hardest class I've ever taken for no other reason than he is a horrible professor & doesn't care about his students. He gives an insane amount of material for each test and then will ask extremely detailed questions. If you love crying from stress, I highly recommend this course.
Ortega is the absolute worst. His lecture is boring and the notes make no sense. Tests are impossible to do well on, with detailed questions that you couldnt have prepared for. The only grades you get are on quizzes and tests, and he takes about 5 years to put them in. He couldnt care less. He makes me so mad im actually out here writing a review.
Professor Ortega is the most frustrating professor I've ever had. His exams cover WAY too much material for only 50 questions & are extremely tricky (+ takes forever to get grade back). His power points are unorganized & vague so you must teach yourself w/ the textbook. You can get an A in this class if you have hours upon hours to spend studying.
A very hard class to do well in. It is possible if you have the time to really put in the effort. Not a lot of points given, just tests and quizzes and both are extremely difficult. From day 1 he said he didn't believe in giving free points and you have to work for it. Not looking forward to the cumulative final.
Ortega makes this class impossible to do well in. His notes are so confusing and consist of random bullet points with no commentary and no titles. The amount of information students are expected to know for the test is so much and he asks the most specific questions that come from who knows where. He is extremely rude and is not helpful!
He tests over material that he skips in class. His background is in physiology, not anatomy. He is rude. When asked, "What should we focus on for the exam?" he says, "It is an even spread." This is his first semester teaching this class and he is failing miserably. Most students are lucky to get a B.
This is by far the WORST course i have ever taken. I took anatomy at my old school and this is not anatomy. He has even stated that he teaches more physiology than anatomy so that is that. You can study as much as you want for the test but still won't make an A. If you like crying then take this class but otherwise avoid it as much as you can
This is a class you need to devote a lot of time for so make sure you review as often as possible. Lectures are very dry and as hard as it is try to go to class and take good notes. If you are a person who likes to go to office hours definitely do it, but I haven't found it beneficial. Every time I've seen him hes been vague and next to no help.
The WORST professor i've ever had. He is ridiculously hard, & is an ass as a person. He halfway teaches and gives no explanation. He called one kid stupid for asking a question during a test review, took away all grades except lab tests and class tests(there are 6 of them) and gives quizzes harder than the tests. I had all A's in sciences until now
This is the class I dread going to. My advice is to avoid Professor Ortega if you can. What should be an intro class is made exponentially harder than it needs to be. The saving grace for everyone is that Ortega does curve his exams, but I cannot speak for the final just yet.
The absolute WORST professor I've ever had. His tests are impossible to study for because it's a bunch of detailed stuff thats not even in the notes. I have done well on all of my sciences but this one. I know a handful of people who have changed their major from nursing to something else because of this course with him.
I hate this class so much that I am contemplating changing my major because it is so miserable. Tests are absurdly hard for an intro class. This class sucks a majority of my time and I still do terrible! I go to office hours and beg for any advice after every test but he just says "change your study habits." He makes me so mad I wrote this review.
I have never given a poor review of a teacher, ever, even if the class was miserable, but here we are! I honestly don't even know where to begin. Lectures are dry, questions are SO detailed, tested over hundreds of pages in the text per exam, slides are not titled or labeled so understanding the context of the info is impossible. DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!
Jason's class is way more difficult than it should be. I have been able to maintain above a 3.5 GPA throughout college but I am working extremely hard just to keep a C in this class. He is super unorganized and not helpful in office hours. WAY too much information on the tests, they're basically impossible to do well on while keeping other grades.
My only advice is to Avoid. This. Class. There is no reason for it to be as hard as it is. He takes a physiological approach which is near impossible to understand, especially if you haven't taken anatomy before, even thought it is an ANATOMY class he is supposed to be teaching. If you're stressed in the beginning of the year, wait until the end.
I don't think I've ever had a worse teacher than him in my life. His powerpoint are vague, the way he teaches is just plain confusing, and his tests are physiology based. I have never struggled more in a class than his and I am a senior.
A terrible teacher that is on the worlds biggest power trip; its pretty clear he wants you to struggle and is pleased when we fail. Everything that has been said about him is true and then some. He talks to us like we are idiots, and doesnt seem to comprehend that this is an intro anatomy class and not physiology.
Jason takes so long to put in our tests. The final test we took will not be put in until the day before the final. He will talk down or degrade anyone who asks the simplest questions, even though the reviews he holds the class before the test isn't a review, but rather open ended questions and answers. No one even knows what they don't know.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. You are given a ton of vague notes and expected to memorize it all down to the tiniest detail, and that is probably what you will be tested over. He is rude, unhelpful, and belittles his students. The textbook doesn't help because he makes his own notes based off his knowledge. Which is all physiology.
pretty simple, if you enjoy crying over stress and being taught by someone who could care less whether or not you succeed, this is totally the class for you. Hands down the worst class i am going to take in college.
His lectures are well structured but it took him over a week on average to get our exam grades in. His exams are so unfair and unreasonable hard. By far one of the hardest courses I have taken in college. Extremely stressful course with unfair grading criteria (almost nothing to buffer your grade).
The tests are insanely hard and the study guides basically just tell you to read the powerpoints, which are hard to understand even if you go to lecture. There was way too much physiology in this course for an anatomy class. He doesn't seem to care that we're all struggling and takes forever to put test grades in.
this class is awful. jason is awful. no matter how much you read the lecture slides like he says to its still too complicated to understand. he belittles his students and seems to not care about his students success. he isnt very helpful when you ask for help. definitely will be the reason i dont get into nursing school.
The overall class is awful. Hes not very clear in his lectures which makes the concepts hard to understand. If you like working hard and it not paying off, then this class is for you. Theres not many opportunities for grades besides test and some quizzes. Hes not very helpful even when you reach out to him personally for help. Get ready to fail!
Tests are harder than he implies. He lied about our final today, causing us to probably all fail or at least end with C's which won't get any of us nursing majors into nursing school here. Shoutout to you Jason, ya really did it to us. If you ask for help, you'll be told to just re-read your lecture notes, which is no help bc they make no sense.
Jason Ortega is the worst professor I've ever had. He doesn't know what he's talking about and contradicts himself during lecture daily. I only did well in this class because of the amount of work I put into it. He teaches way too much physiology for an anatomy course and is completely disorganized. Horrendous. I don't have one good thing to say.
Jason's anatomy class is the worst class I have ever taken. I would study 17+ hours at a time 2-3 days before exams and and 5 every day before. I had to devote my life to this class to receive a B. I don't know anyone else who got a B, or an A in the class. Tests are very detail specific and there is a tremendous amount of material per test.
Avoid him if you need an A. Expect everything to be posted late and at 2 am. Tests are incredibly detailed. Students from my class asked him how to prepare for the exams and his response was for them to change their major. His way of teaching is to read power points, most of the time skimming through terms found on the exams.
Jason is a very detailed instructor, which can lead to a difficult course. However, the expectations in this course are not absurd because we simply have to memorize structures necessary for any health professional to know. While sometimes the content was dry and difficult to remember. I didn't feel he was unfair.
Professor Ortega could do many many things differently. For one, he grades based on very few things and does not curve lab or lecture exams regardless of the class average (36% for one of our exams). He is also very physiology-focused for this being an anatomy class. His lectures consist of him reading the PowerPoint verbatim. Also, he's rude :)
This is the most difficult class I have ever taken in my life. He is not sympathetic towards his students and doesn't seem to care when they all fail. This class takes over your life and you can study for hours, and still not do well. Lectures and vague and confusing and he expects us to know every single little detail. DO NOT take if you want an A
While Jason's not the most amazing professor, the tests are word for word from the lecture power points, and as anatomy is very straightforward information, it is hard to not like him. His lectures can be somewhat boring, but overall just study the lectures and you'll do fine.
The class is very difficult and the prof does not do a good job of setting the students up for success. The tests are more detailed than what you learn in class. There is little to no time between each test and you are expected to know every little detail of the powepoints. There are 100+ slides to study for each test and non specific review sessio
This class is an easy A. I never went to class and passed with an A+. Mr. Ortega is the best professor Ive ever had. The people complaining are just bad at biology and should consider switching majors to something more angled towards their strengths, like philanthropy perhaps. Long live daddy Ortega.
an A in this class must mean you live and breathe his information. He puts out study guides but don't even try and learn it all, he'll either focus on one chapter, or go to in depth in anything else. 60-70 slides power points, with 5-6 of them to memorize for each test, along with 30 labeled(8-9) diagrams. my heart goes out to the spirits he killed
I studied for 40+ hours on each exam and still got C's and D's on all of them. This wasn't even anatomy, it was physiology and he sucks at teachings. Don't take this class unless you want to fail and have the worst teacher on the planet. Jason, if you're reading this you suck donkey balls
i didnt take this class but my friend did and hes an ass and doesnt take attendance and doesnt help with anything, never returned her emails long story short i am changing my major so i dont have to take his class
You really have to study for this class since there is so much information for every test. Once you get behind, it's hard to catch up. The tests & quizzes are from the power points, and a lot of the tests Q's are exact questions from the quizzes. It's a hard class, but it's possible to do well, you just really need to study hard for each test!
Dr. Ortega is a great professor. Many people may disagree, but that is because they didn't like their grade. I enjoyed this course & the material presented. Dr. Ortega is a great lecturer & good at answering student questions. He opens the lecture for questions the class period before exams. Ortega has provided many resources for us to succeed.
Ortega is an absolute horrible professor. His first 2 exams are fairly easy but they are very misleading to the rest of the course. His exams have nothing to do with what he lectures about. There is too much information on each exam and he explains things very poorly. He teaches more physiology than anatomy. Avoid this man at all costs!
"review you lecture notes..." good luck because that's all the help you're going to get. This guy is impossible. GPA killer. Do not take him if you can avoid it.
Jason gets a lot of bad ratings, but really it is because his students just aren't good at memorizing or anatomy isn't their thing or they study the day before. Jason gives you all the information you need to get an A on every test, you just have to know all of the information. Yes, it's hard but it's doable if you study 4-5 days in advance.
I don't know how he is still an anatomy professor. He literally does not teach or make his lecture a learning environment where anyone feels comfortable to ask questions. He gets up there and rants for an hour. His lecture and lab tests are over a very large amount of material and I feel like I am always being suffocated by this class. He is awful.
Ortega gives you everything to be successful! This class is straight memorization. It is difficult but very manageable. The bad reviews are from people who can't memorize or who aren't putting in the time and effort required to get a good grade.
I have really enjoyed taking Anatomy with Ortega. You HAVE to attend lecture to understand the material, but he is a great lecturer and explains concepts very well. The exams are hard, but if you study well it is completely possible to make perfect scores. Idk why some people hate him, I thought the class was great.
Jasons class is 90% physiology and 10% anatomy. The people who say you can make an A are completely correct. If you start studying the week before then yes you will know enough. However, he does terrible at teaching for one reason: he is teaching us PHYSIOLOGY. He barley includes the anatomy part but still expects you to know everything. So bad.
I wasn't aware I signed up for physiology? My life has been a living hell this semester because of Jason Ortega. His powerpoints are the most unorganized mess I have ever tried to decipher. Just trying to begin studying is like solving a giant puzzle. Lecture is pointless - all he does is read his garbage power points word for word.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He just reads from the power points and the majority of his class is physiology. They might as well make it A&P instead of two separate classes. I have made good grades on the tests because I spend ALL OF MY TIME towards anatomy. I cannot think of anything good to say honestly he is the worst.
i would rather get mumps than ever have to go through this AWFUL course again
The people on here who say those who rate him bad only do it cause they don't like their grade are WRONG. I will probably make and A and can say HE IS AWFUL. I am not learning anything & isn't that the point of school? I would honestly rather transfer in an anatomy credit & get less points towards nursing school than take his class.
If you memorize everything word for word on his slides, the tests match his slides and answers are clear. A lot of people just don't want to put in the effort to do that - which is understandable. It is easily the most time consuming class, but an A is not impossible. Just study study study. I never got to see my friends bc of this class
Ortega did his best with a hard subject. Tests aren't bad if you memorize the powerpoints, but you have to put in the effort in order to get good results. Do all the quizzes because around 5-10 questions from each test come from them. Be able to know all the diagrams that he has underlined, easier if you print them off and fill them in to study.
Yeah so he's really bad. He doesn't take attendance so its so hard to be motivated to go to class. all he does is read the powerpoints that are literally posted on blackboard as his lecture. all the tests are literally the powerpoints so if you dont memorize the powerpoints you're screwed. there is so much information to know for each test. Rip
This class is a very hard class, but I think that professor Ortega does the best job he can. There is so much information to learn that you HAVE to study all the time. Most people just dont want to put in the work that this class and the lab requires but if you study your butt off an A is definitely doable. But you have to go to lecture!
took this class and truly it is NOT BAD. but you have to be on top of it. like you cannot mess around with this class. you need to study constantly to make good scores. i have made 100 and I've made 70s and the difference is how much time I took to study. Its really not bad; it's the volume of work you have to do. Book helps to organize info!
Due to COVID this class was online, he posted extremely long lectures (even though it's a 50 minute class). Exams almost every week, including lab exams. That's a total of 9 exams and a final, in addition to quizzes. Lab exams are insanely content heavy, 500 labeling terms/parts per exam. When emailing for help, he copied and pasted the same thing.
This course is AWFUL! Exams every week, including lab exams (4 Lab exams & 6 Lecture exams). The lab exams are VERY tedious (atleast 400 terms to memorize). Cummulative final four days after the lecture exam. It's definitely not designed for students to succeed.
I took Professor Ortega for Human Anatomy and let me tell you: it was terrible. He makes it seem like he wants to help you but in all reality he does not care. He's the only anatomy professor at UofA so if you need this class you have no other choice, but just be prepared to suffer - especially if it's still online. Worst prof I've had yet.
Took this class a year ago but wanted to warn those who are about to take this class. If possible, take anatomy over the summer at a community college and see if it will transfer in. This was the most stressful class I've ever taken. It basically fried my brain with the amount of things you have to memorize every week. Get ready to hit the books.
Ortega wasn't as bad as the reviews stated (as a person) but this man for sure needs to go back to school and learn what it means to be an educator. I would have an A in the class if he didn't average lab and lecture grades. He also would upload lectures that were double the class time of 50 min. Not a fan of his teaching style at all.
Both lab and lecture don't teach you concepts or pertinent material, entirely memorizational, little feedback or discussion. Tough grader with almost all grades coming from a few major exams. HE COMBINED LAB AND LECTURE GRADES (this wouldn't be a problem if lab wasn't harder and more memorization than lecture, but in this case it is)
Okay so heres the thing with Anatomy with Ortega, you will feel overwhelmed. I could never get a firm grasp on the conceptual aspects of the class so I got a C on like every lecture exam. I recommend investing in some good expo markets and clear plastic sheets to help you rewrite and memorize diagrams/lab slides since quizlet doesnt cut it.
Human Anatomy was very difficult; however, if you watch each lecture and take notes you WILL pass. An A is not the most common grade, and is defiantly attainable if you study and devote yourself to the course full time.
Was a good teacher , until he started going on and on about his love life and how no one loved him . After a couple classes he kept looking at me and making me feel very uncomfortable .
Anatomy is such a fascinating subject that is absolutely butchered by this class & professor. Ortega has shown multiple times over the semester (during a pandemic) that he does not care at. all. about his students or the amount of work he gives them. This class is ridiculous I'm so sorry if you're required to take it. Also 500 terms per lab exam
My class was all online and asynchronous so I never met or spoke with Ortega. He sent out the lectures and assignments and that was that. It is completely on you to memorize the hundreds of terms for lab exams that are graded extremely slow and are almost every 2 weeks. The workload is so insane for this class I had to drop one of my others to pass
Professor Ortega truly is not the issue with this class. Anatomy is a hard subject and requires a great deal of studying. His class is very doable if you study a lot and memorize all the terms. No textbook necessary. Lab and lecture grades are also combined so success in both is important for a good grade.
I dont understand why Ortega gets so much hate. I think he does an excellent job for a very content heavy subject. People that are complaining just didnt want to put the time in to study. Yes, I had no life while taking this class, but it is pure memorization only. Literally by far the easiest class I have ever taken. Just a ton of memorizing.
Mr. Ortega sent us pre-recorded videos that without a doubt were recorded last semester. They are supposed to be 50 minutes but he edits them to be compact with info for at least 1 hour if not 1.5. His review sessions are worthless because he disabled our cameras and mics so we are just typing in the chat. It takes at least a week if not 3 to grade
I thought Professor Ortega was fine, I think the issue most people have with this class is the difficulty. It is a lot of material and memorization, however doable if you study. Book isn't required but I found it super helpful. He does take a while to grade things, but he is very straightforward with the criteria.
Doesn't matter how hard you study! Terrible study guides and lecture lab grade combination sucked. My TA for lab told us he wasn't there to teach us, over 500 terms per lab exam open response and no word bank. Ortega seems nice but almost all of his tests are labeling instead of testing comprehension tested memorization! Only option for anatomy.
This class was just hard. I find it hard to memorize that much content. With a test like every 2 weeks and a test in lab every two weeks, it was just hard to keep up. He talks fast and he's really smart but not great as a teacher. Hard to follow. Also you were taking the next test by the time test grades came in for the previous one. He's nice tho
Tests are absolutely ridiculous. The questions are fill in the blank/multiple choice. There are two blanks in each question so even if you know the answer to one, you can still get the answer wrong. I learn from textbooks best, so only learning from his boring lectures and fill in the blanks notes did not help me. UARK needs a new anatomy professor
He does not deserve the bad reviews. The tests were very straight forward from the PowerPoints, you just have to make sure you study the material very well. He also was lenient about extensions on something if there was a technological issue or something which I thought was very good
If you study every single night, it isn't HORRIBLE, just a lot of time needs to be put into it. Lab tests very hard in my opinion with 500 terms to know and label as well as spell correctly (no wordbank, multiple choice, etc.) I would not take this class unless you can study very well and have good time management. Test heavy, one every 2 weeks
I know some people tend to be dramatic on here but no lie this was the worst class I've taken so far. The Lecture tests are very hard and so are the lab tests. My advice would be to use quizlet for lab exam studying and lecture notes/Ppts for lecture studying. Good Luck!
Ortegas exams were very straight forward and from the powerpoints. He truly is not bad. Allow yourself a good amount of time to study for exams. He offered extra credit. It is a difficult course, but Ortega made it easier by putting all the info on the powerpoints and adding bonus points on exams.
takes a lot of work, time, and tears to pass this class. for lab, i would make quizlets and practice typing so it's easier to stick when memorizing 500 terms for the lab exams. for lecture, practice understanding the quizzes! after failing 4 exams, i realized the quiz q's were basically on the exam so STUDY THEM! take at least 5-7 days to study !
Although the class is full of a lot of material, it is not as hard as some of these reviews would have you believe. The lecture notes provide all the information you will need for the exams, and the lectures are recorded. Most test questions come from the chapter quizzes, and there are many quizlets you can use to study for lecture and lab exams.
Take EVERY quiz b/c he drops the lowest 4. Complete the pre-assessment, 15 extra pts. Study the diagrams in the quizzes for exams, they usually repeat. Ochem was time consuming, but it made sense. This class ISN'T comprehensive just MEMORIZATION. Ppl saying it was "fair" either didn't work or they have a photographic memory. REVIEW consistently!
Mr.Ortega is by far the worst professor on this campus. His class is structured in a way to make you fail. Your lab exams are 500 hundred terms with no word bank. The lecture exams are pretty straight forward but you have one every two weeks. He goes really fast in lecture so make sure to take good notes.NEVER TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU HAVE TOO!
Literally the worst class ever. Dropped it & am taking it over the summer at a local community college. Can't even describe how bad it is. Unless you literally have nothing else (work, other classes, sorority) and you can study every day for hours do not take this class. Pure memorization. The lab tests are genuinely so bad, 800 terms no word bank.
THIS CLASS IS AWFUL. If you have no hobbies, no friends, and no life, it's perfect, because to do good you have to devote all of your time to it! The lab exams are the biggest, most ridiculous waste of time. They pertain to practically no major. So very difficult. Worst class at this university and I will confidently stand by that statement.
What an awful class. Take it online or do whatever you possibly can to get out of taking it at UARK. I can't believe the lab exams are allowed and a part of the class. It's med school level studying and memorization for a 1 hour course. Flat out ridiculous. I have absolutely no respect for him and what he puts students through.
This class is very hard. Which is why he has so many bad reviews. He honestly explains concepts well and tries to give plenty of different analogies to demonstrate processes in different ways. your grade is based on lecture exams + lab exams and some easy quizzes. Lab exams are straight memorization of lab pictures, roughly 400 terms per exam.
Jason Ortega is not terrible the class is just HARD!!! Lab is insane. This class is not a blow off at all! DEVOTION tO STUDYING WILL BE YOUR BESTIE. Lab and lecture are combined and its intense. Good luck!
The class is purely memorization-based, so your grade relies on how much time you put in and how good you are at remembering things. I took this class as an elective and was able to balance it with my other honors classes. If you do a lot of Quizlet then this class is pretty easy. 10 exams in 12 weeks and each took me roughly 15 hours to study for.
This course is ridiculously hard. Lab and lecture are combined so whatever grade you receive is presented as the same letter grade for both lab and lecture on your transcript. Lecture exams are extremely difficult and lab exams are straight memorization for 500 plus terms, all fill in the blank. If you can get out of taking it at UARK, PLEASE do.
THIS CLASS IS PURE MEMORIZATION AND MEMORIZATION ONLY. People who do not do well are either poor-memorizers or do not dedicate enough time to studying for each exam. The exams are straight forward and you will do well if you memorize the lecture slides. Lab is a lot and like an additional class, but if you dedicate time, you will do well!
Massive amount of material - don't recommend for people not going into health care. The tests are multiple-choice, but tricky wording. The material needed to be learned ALONG with the corresponding lab is very difficult. Space out studying and don't rely on a Quizlet. Go to class. He's a great professor, just teaching a very difficult subject.
The class is a breeze only if you give yourself enough time to study the information. Attendance isn't required, and he posts recorded lectures the day after class. Lab is a waste of time since there are quizlets with the same information already labeled. Lab and lecture grades are combined, so if you give yourself time to study, you will do fine.
Don't take this class if its not required! Lab/lecture grades are combined, lab exams: 500 terms (labeling pics of animal insides) no word bank/counted off for incorrect spelling. Lecture exams are comprehensive. If you have to take this class, know this will be the most difficult and probably best not taken with other classes matching difficulty
He's a good professor, it's not his fault he teaches a difficult course
He's super caring. I needed help with lab, and he spent extra time explaining everything to me and making sure I understood everything. he's very good at explaining things. overall, a great professor.
Awful , hard and awful !!! Do not take him unless you want to drop or fail. So unnecessary work. Tests are so hard .
Would recomend holding out if possible if he is your only option
