Worst teacher ever, he covers the material well. However, most of the course he just bragged about what celebrities he knows. He says that every actor besides him in the industry is basically horrible. He treats all his students like acting majors in Acting 101. He says that he doesn't care about grades but he rarely gives anything above a B.
Talks to students like they are idiots, which is hysterical, because we are. he is very straightforward and clear about his expectations for the class. I enjoyed all the material we covered and he really inspired me as an actor/writer. Great teacher with class sarcasm.
Professor is great. Students whoi actually attended class learned and received high grades. If you didnt then you didnt. natteep nomine
Most pointless class I have ever taken. Do not recommend at all. Gives a dumb quiz everyday with dumb questions about a play that takes 4 hours to read. And gives you 5 minutes to answer it as if we can take that long to answer it. Class is overall pointless. Plus, he's very annoying and sarcastic.
He gives us plays that i have never heard of. Many minority plays. Lots of docmentary movies. Take the class if you want to read things you never have before. COnversations can be hard. Class is like real college.
This class is more like a religious experience. I am always amazed at how the professor gives a few notes and then the acting changes. I cannot believe how I can actually see people go from 1 to 10 in acting skills in one class. Amazing! I am never able to see movies the same way anymore. I am always judgeing actors now. That makes it good and bad
Greatest class ever. Made me think in ways I never had before.
Great.
I am currently taking Dr. Ramirez's class and so far I love it! Yes, there is reading, but what class doesn't? The textbook is a little confusing, but if you read it out aloud, you will get it, I promise.. He makes each lecture inspiring because he gets you out of your comfort zone and will help you see your potential! Thanks Dr. Ramirez!
Prof Ramirez is great! He challenges you to think and does not put up with excuses. I know he has made me a better actor and has done the same for class. If you are not dedicated to acting you will not to well.
I just took the class for credit, and I never had a real interest in acting, but that changed after this class. He makes you think so many different ways you never would have thought before. He spends aloof time helping students and trying to improve their acting. He's real, he doesn't sugar coat things, and he is the funniest teacher I've ever had
Amazing! Changed everything I ever thought about acting. Made me realize how hard it is to be in theater but inspired me to pursue it. I wish everyone treated acting with as respect as Ramirez. Bravo!
The most brilliant teacher ever. This class was incredible.
Acting 1 is the best class I ever took at Suffolk!
Jason is an incredible professor. An actor prepares is basically what you must respect. Changed everything I ever thought about acting.
This is the funniets man I have ever had. Makes you laugh while he teaches you.
Acting 2 is an awesome class
You will have a completely different outlook and respect for acting. You must participate and work hard in this class. You have to memorize lines and perform in front of the class multiple times. However it is fun, you find your strength, and everyone is in the same boat. Great Prof! Really takes his class seriously and wants you to do well.
Professor Ramirez is amazing. He seems to be super difficult and discipliened but then you see it. What he does in class is incredible and inspiring. This class is no joke and probably the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. You must be willing to listen and read and work really hard. I cannot believe what he does in one semesster only.
I just finished Acting 2, with Dr. Ramirez.... He is a really awesome professor and wants the best for you... Thanks Dr. Ramirez!
There was really nothing to base your grade on besides the journal entries that he asks you to write throughout the semester. This was acting 101 and he expected wayyy too much. Like um no I'm sorry that I can't perform like a Broadway actor I'm just a kid trying to graduate from Suffolk.
Alot of work. You have to make character sketches, 65 journal notes, perform a monologue and 2 people scene. If you are absent you lose participation points. He gives extra credit for seeing plays at the school which can lift up your grade alot. I didnt have an interest in acting but learned to act by the end. My grade was fair.
Great class. Videos of plays and different kinds of plays.
Prof Ramirez is a wonderful teacher. His knowledge of plays especially non-traditional plays about being black, hispanic and gay are a breath of fresh air. I would take any class he taught again.
Professor Ramirez was great. He taught a very organized class and inspired me to pursue a scholarship which I received. Definitely take his class.
Blunt & sarcastic, enjoyable. Do exercises dont regret not having fun & learning. THE BOOK IS PHENOMENAL. Dedicate time to journaling, reading play & book, using imaginationcreativity & having fun, it's an art! Safe zone for newbies, go in with tough skin. PAY ATTENTION TO EVRYTHNG, EVEN STUDENTS, DONT MISS OUT ON PRECIOUS LESSONS IN EVERY MOMENT
Ramirez is good, but serious acting, go 2 Selden. Ram's good 4 ppl that want taste of real acting& the book's great! Now in acting 2 know missed lot of little important things that classmates learned w/ other profs. Ram's funny, honest & pretty good w/ feedback, should be more specific most of time. GET INVOLVED and LISTEN to everything
Dr. Ramirez is very talented and one of the best profesor I had have. Hes very passionate about what he does and has the desire to want us to do well. He motivates everyone + gets us all involved.
Prof. Ramirez has a vey dry sense of humor. One midterm, term paper, and final. The term paper that was about two plays has HIS name on it. Meaning that he was a part of the play. It isn't hard, but it is a lot of work.
Dr. Ramirez is a great professor. He is very knowledgeable in theater and performance. He is down-to-earth, funny, and a fair grader. Expect to read plays and broaden your understanding of theater (or simply develop an interest in it).
This is not grade 13. You will read some very interestng plays about modern issues. Homosexuality, war, being Black & Hispanic, hip hop musicals. You will also read Shakespear and watch great films. Great college level education experience.
I took professional acting classes at the Barrow Group in Manhattan and a different SCCC acting class and Prof Ramirez is the best teacer I have ever had. Once you take a real class in nyc you will realize that. He knows every play written and makes you work till your perfect.
Just started class with Professor R. Very organized and his explanations of theatre and education are articulate and to the point. Well aware of the professional stage and has a doctoral degree. Very approachable and funny and sacrcastic.
Genuinely enjoyed this class. I have nothing negative to say about the professor and would recommend any class he teaches. Class is very easy to pass especially with extra credit.
Professor Ramirez is brilliant. Wonderful class and great readings and movies. I would tke any class he taught again,
This man works HARD!!! He is everwhere and does everything at grant. Props go to him. Makes you work in acting. Do the journal or you will not pass. I would take him for acting 2.
This man does not take to excuses. Just do the work and you will get an A. Mad amount of extra credit.
Really teaches you about acting and the business of plays and films and tv. I learned so much and am motivated to give it a shot. Make sure you read the book and do your journal every week. Pick the best partner you can it makes a big difference. Try to get him to act on stage. He is an amazing actor.
Great Professor overall he explains the world of acting the best way to possibly understand. Easy A in class as long as you do the journals that is given in his class. I would take any class he teaches if I could. When choosing a scene partner make sure you choose the right person because they will completely affect your grade.
Ramrez explains acting like its a business not like if it is a college. If you want to become a pro actor then you are in the right class. A lot of reading and acting actor prepares work. Then monologue and scene and journal. You should get an A if you just do it the best you can. You do not have to be perfect.
Like a Jedi Master for actors.
I have nothing negative to say about Ramirez. He is ione of the realest professors ive ever had. He gives multiple chances for extra credit, but the class is an easy A without it. No textbook required.
I came back to school after many years. Dr Ramirez taught a class that made me realize what college is supposed to be about. Lots of reading of powerful plays. Philosophy, history, civil rights were all apart of the class. Truly enlightening experience. Too smart! No excuses. A is on the way.
No excuses. No playing. Memorize, create beats, subtext, journals, analisis, and become charavcter..
Dr. Ramirez was one of the realest, most honest professors at SCCC. He tells you how it is and prepares you for life. As long as you get your work done and prepare for performances, the class is an easy A. He gives a ton of opportunities for extra credit, make sure you take advantage of them. Taking his THR 101 class next semester, and can't wait.
I have acted for many years. This was the best acting teacher I have ever had. Professor Ramirez's knowledge of plays, acting, movies, and the process of auditioning is accurate to the point of perfection. If you want to take a professional acting class pay carefull attention to all he says . Don't become distracted by other students lazyness.
Great prof
Jason is an amazing guy, and is there and willing to help if you really want to do good in his class. I took Theatre 105 last semester, and he was really an awesome guy, and he was fun to talk to as well. He makes you work for your grade and there is no sliding by in the class, but trust me when I say, it is totally all worth every minute.
Such an incredible experience and professor. Makes me proud to be a Latinx student and so happy that this course is at Grant. You don't need to speak Spanish or be Latino. A real sense of family!
He is an amazing professor. You are very lucky if you get a chance to be in his class. He makes you work for your grade but it is all worth it. I was truly inspired by his acting class and his wisdom.
He's an amazing professor! He's so smart and wants you to do well in his class. Just read the plays and do the extra credit and you'll get an A for sure. He's also really picky about the papers he assigns so make sure to use the proper MLA format :)
I went into this class with absolutley no interest in theater. I walked out inspired and I now want to be an actress. Professor Ram was brilliant and knows everything about his plays, Brecht and musicals. Extra credit guarantees you an A.
This is the second class I've taken with Prof. Ramirez and he ultimately inspired me to declare my major as Theatre. THR101 is very easy as long as you understand the content of the plays you need to read. I didn't write a major assignment and still got an A due to all the extra credit. Quizzes every day, 2 papers, and take home midterm and final.
Most importantl is that all the textbooks Prof Ramirez uses are free. He uploads everything to blackboard so you never have to pay for anything. I took 2 courses with him in acting and understanding theater and I never paid for a book. DO all the extra credit and you are going to get an A+. He is very very funny too.
I recommend Prof. Ramirez IF and ONLY IF you enjoy reading plays... the plays are really good, but you have to read them if you want to pass. He gives quizzes everyday at the first 10min of each class & you can use your phone but the questions are usually specific. He gives extra credit and he's super cool. Show up and read, you'll easily pass.
If your not a theater aficionado your in for a rough semester. Most of the class is there because of the music requirement. He assumes everyone has a deep knowledge of plays the basic person would never have heard of. Be ready to see some horrible plays that are required. Tries to be funny when people ask basic questions but is a bit rude.
Read 6 plays including In the Heights, Boys in the Band, Brecht and Top Dog Under Dog. Crazy amount of extra credit. You will get an A. He likes students to go see plays on both Grant and Selden. Not a fan of Shakespear.
honestly, hes a great guy but he requires you to do alot of work. you have to read 6 plays and take quizzes on them every class for 10 mins. theres 1paper and 1final project. gives alot of extra credit just by going to the school plays. as long as you do well and do extra credit youll get an A. but this class is very time consuming due to the plays
not a good class to take without any prior knowledge/interest in theater. gotta read 6 plays and 10min quizzes on them at the start of wash class 1 midterm 1 theatrical review and a final design project. dont let him tell you how easy the class is and dont walk in expecting an easy A. the class is passable but be ready to earn it
Fantastic acting class. He makes you understand what it takes to create a piece. Lots of work which pays off big at final scene performances. Took for Musical theater and with Theater club. Brutally honest but really funny. Take the class and learn everything you need to audition.
Professor Ramirez promised if you read the plays and saw the extra credit shows then you would get a definite A. That is exactly what happened. He wants you to go see plays during club hour and sometimes at 6:00 PM. Class was great time even though I had to keep on top of reading one play every 2 weeks. Funny and very sarcastic. Loves musicals.
Fantastic class. Made me totally understand Latina literature and history. A personal essay, 2 short papers and midterm and final.
Because of Jason I was on the short list for Purchase and Juilliard, have had my short play performed in NYC and am currently in summer stock. Lots of work but pays off.
if you are thinking about taking this professor i say 100% go for it, im currently taking him right now theater 101, hes very educated on what hes teaching.. Professor Ramirez promised if you read the plays and saw the extra credit shows then you would get a definite A. I always believed in you get what you put. good luck!
Worth the work. All 8 plays are on Blackboard. Opportunity to act in a scene from all plays for extra credit. Two written reviews of free plays that are performed at either grant or Ammermann. Midterm and final exam. Really interesting when prof. talks about the business of acting and films and television.
Guaranteed A. Midterm and Final are both take home for a week. No textbook needed.
Take Home tests and alot of extra credit. You will read a play every 2 weeks on blackboard.
Plays every two weeks. Taake home midterm and final. Watch alot of videos about plays. You will read but the class is very easy. You will get a guarantee A if you do extra credit.
Prof. Ramírez is an excellent professor. If youre planning on taking THR 101, I would totally recommend to take his class. Hes very funny and makes the lectures interesting and fun! Even if you dont like plays. We read 8 plays throughout the semester, two theatrical reviews, mini-tests every two weeks, and lots of extra credit. Read the plays!!!
Great acting professor. Teaches the class to make them ready for the professional world. Auditions, script analysis, monologues and scenes. I was impressed by his dedication to acting and discipline.
Guaranteed A
Best professor I ever took at SCCC. He has the best lectures and the best sense of humor a professor can have. Has great stories and experiences of being an actor in the entertainment industry. You learn a LOT - no tests only performances and character analysis. Will give you an A - and admits to it - if you meet his basic requirements.
Best acting class. Perform a monologue and scene. Great discussions about acting of stage and film. Professor is very funny and knows how to observe acting and teach method acting.
Professor Ramirez works very hard to make this class a great experience. The play festival at the endnof the semester was amazing and created a real family. Best professor at Suffolk.
Best professor at Grant!
At first he was my favorite professor because he is humorous and sarcastic. However once the holidays passed he was very strict and uncaring for people who had deaths in the family. Whenever I would email him he wouldnt give straight answers to my questions about projects or homework. He is very tough and strict about attendance and work.
Ramirez is an incredible professor and director. Great classes where he taught me how to write a play and then we performed it in class. Take this Professor.
Hes a great professor overall. Hes honest, relatable and easy-going. Not difficult to pass this class at all, he gives plenty of chances for extra credit. Just read the plays and youll be fine. I had over 100 in the class without extra credit and sometimes I wouldnt even read through the entire play. Make an effort!
Ram is an incredible acting teacher. His knowledge of method acting puts students at the same level as NYU or professional acting schools in the city. Read and participate and have a great time with the warm-up.
I respect him as a professor and would take him again. He gives strong, tough, heavy feedback. So if your not ready for critizism, I wouldn't take him. You have to go in there with an open mind. He gives 2 papers and you have to do two performances. Put the work in and you'll come out with a good grade. Plus there is extra credit. Never miss class.
Great professor and wonderful man. He is a vegan and loves animals as well as caring for his students. He gives you the straight deal and goes out of his way to make sure you get the highest possible grade you deserve. Take him and enjoy the experience.
Professor Ramirez promised we would all receive passing grades when we last meet in March. That's what he did. He kept his promises and I had a good online class and learned from him. Take his class. You wont be sorry
Great online acting class. I have two monologue videos right now that I can use for acting auditions uploaded to Youtube and on my own acting reel when we go back to normal. Jason is a great person and acting teacher. All the people I kept in touch with in the class received A's.
This was a great online Acting class. I learned so much about acting for the camera even though the course began as a theatre acting class. I highly recommend this class, Professor really taught me a great deal about auditioning for television and movies based on camera auditions.
Fun and makes class interesting. Really helps you feel more prepared for your play with the rehearsals. Just dont be late.
I am an A+ student. This teacher is honestly the worst professors at Suffolk. He is so mandatory on attendance, I told him I was in a car accident with a doctors note and he told me it didn't matter and it counted as an absence. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE! He does not care about you or your grade. It is all test based and a huge project. Very harsh grader.
Dr. Ramirez is one of the best professors at Suffolk. He cares about his students and created a very fair gender class which highlighted multiple perspectives and race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Take his class!
Jason is a great person and professor. He supports his students and allows for multiple online submissions of required work. Take his class and enjoy modern mythology which includes The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, the MCU, and Alien.
He is a good professor but be prepared to READD plays which are like 80 pages. I got used to it but some might not like that. Has weekly quizzes and grades discussion boards since it was online due to COVID one essay review a play. Pretty fair class not too had but you have to work for it hes specific when you analyze a play.
Professor Ramirez is a very intelligent and organized online teacher. He uploads all books and materials on Blackboard and makes it very easy to pass the class. Quiz and discussion board every week. One short paper and a final exam but no midterm. I have over a 100 average and do not finish all the reading.
Best professor at Grant. I took Ram for 3 classes. He is an incredible acting and theater teacher and taught fantastic classes in Mythology and Gender. Cares about his students and guaranteed an A as long as you do what was required. He is also an expert on Lgbtq and Latinx and African American plays and musicals. Join the Theatre Club for fun.
I took this class fully online and I enjoyed it. Theres a lot of work but if you keep yourself organized youll be fine. There is a test each week that is only available for 24 hours. For the rest of the week, he assigns DBs that are relatively straightforward. You will learn a lot but be ready to read!
This was one of my favorite classes. Professor Ramirez assigned a lot of reading, but the pieces were very interesting and thought-provoking. He assigns a weekly discussion board and quiz, but as long as you do the assigned work it's not hard. I would definitely recommend taking the gender studies course with him.
Promised an A and delivered an A. Read 1 play a week and take 1 quiz over 4 days. Sometimes I did not read the whole play and I still got 100%. Take this class and professor.
Prof. Ramirez is interesting.. I thought I wouldn't get an A like he promised but at the end he gives people a chance to get extra credit and that's where participation really matters. Just try your best and look at his feedback. There is a play and review along with a quiz at the end of every week, you write your own play&review in the end. yuh
Prof Ramirez has an intense knowledge of the theatre and has many stories about Hollywood and television. He encourages students to write plays and then produced them at the end of the semester. I was grateful that he also included plays written by women and the LGBT community of writers. Take this class and about performing arts.
Best acting class ever. Ramirez teaches a professional acting class and prepares you for a career in movies and theater. You will not be disappointed.
Agreed with another review that this professor is uncaring. Better hope your life is perfect and nothing comes up because he will not be understanding. The class itself was unimpressive, most of the students doing the work to review peers. And little guidance/directing to individual actors. I am out of lines, but: Better classes are elsewhere.
I totally disagree with the last reviewer. The class allows for individual commentary from everyone in the class, questions from the actors performing and constant guidance from the professor. I am a student who suffered unexpected health and personal matters during the semester and Professor Ramirez was caring and supportive. Great acting class.
Best class at Suffolk. We built a family across all the Acting, Gender, Photo and English classes. Wonderful person and super understanding of all students regardless of race, orientation, and language.
Professor Ramirez directed many different productions to make sure that everyone had stage time in Fall semester. He works so hard and is truly an inspiration to his students and the Grant campus. I created four roles and performed in the Blackbox and in the Van Nostrand five times in one semester. He cares about his students and their acting.
Jason is the most amazing professor. He changed my life.
Simply the best. Better than all the rest.
Jason is the most amazing director. Epiphany changed everything I thought I knew about acting and performing.
Prof Ramirez teaches you how to act in plays and on camera with a lot of time dedicated to auditioning and self tapes. I had a great time and a family was built with students. Listen carefully especially when he talks about casting and choosing monologues and scenes for two people. Great class and professor.
One of the rare professors who will change your life.
a really fun easy class
He is so amazing, best professor i've ever had.
jason is an incredible and intellectual human being. he was my professor for many classes and i wish i could stay at suffolk to learn from him forever. he puts his all into every one of his students. listen to him, please, he has so much to say. you won't regret taking any of his classes, he changes lives.
Jason is a great professor, I will be taking again next semester
jason is the most incredible professor ever. his vision while directing and passion for plays cannot be rated. he creates a safe space in the blackbox that has changed my life and made it possible to graduate. i wish i could work with him creating theater forever
Jason is an incredible professor who can truly transform your perspective on acting and performing. His classes are a must-take - engaging and eye-opening. Unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep.
greatest prof ever. easy grading and guaranteed A
Professor Ramirez is a good guy but he is very strict and stubborn about certain things. If you don't do something right then he will call you out which I personally did not like. but he is a very tough grader so be prepared and be aware that he might change things last minute
Jason is like no other professor. His intelligence and passion for the arts has no bounds. I am better for knowing him.
I am amazed at the knowledge Jason has about theatre and acting. He is not human. A wonderful vegan with a proud LGBTQ approach to teaching.
