Very intelligent, nice guy. Chem doesn't come easy to me, so I'm kinda struggling. But, he's a good prof.
This guy is awesome!!! He's smart but talked about chemistry in the students' terms. Lots of funny, off-hand comments too. He related chemistry to everything--physics, government, food and beer! Really put it in perspective. He was my favorite professor this semester; I recommend him for freshman chemistry at UNCA! Fairly hot too!!!
go to his office when you need help with lab hw during his hrs and he'll help you.sometimes overwhelming but it's worth it.great sense of humor.friendly, even bought us pizza on the last day!
This guy is a weirdo... He never seemed to say the rights things and was incredibly awkward. BUT, on the other hand, compared to the rest of the chemistry professors he seems like a real human being and not some old man droning about molecules and formulas. Though insanely strange and awkward, he's helpful, almost funny, and is willing to help!
Notes easy to follow, offers lots of help on the tough problems. Not afraid to use colorful language in lecture! Really does a great job breaking chemistry down for the new students. Always looks like he's dressed to go to the beach lol.
Thank GOD for new blood in the chemistry dept! This guy is a breath of fresh air! Actually puts chemisty into english-as opposed to greek. Very willing to help outside of class, funny, goofy and weird as hell. Definitely takes into consideration how hard you tried when it comes to final grades. Willing to go out for a beer after class!
I have to agree...this guy is a weirdo. He is extremly socially akward. He came into my restuarant, and sat in my section, then said "oh, I didn't know you worked here." Even though I always wear my work clothes to the exam so that I can be less late to work. Only tipped 13%. I am assuming he doesn't know what a good tip is. Helpful and seems nice.
Hard course, but Schmeltzer made it bearable. Notes and practice tests were fairly helpful, but exams were long and difficult. Lectures would have been more boring if he didn't work in some environmental and commercial applications of chemistry. Very accessible in his office and very, very helpful one-on-one attention.
He is very intelligent and very helpful. His only flaw is that he looks a little like Magnum P.I. which means that he's so hot it can be kind of distracting.
Great professor in chemistry--fun in class but well-organized and very demanding. Hard in class but very helpful.
He is a fabulous teacher and is extremely helpful. Also, he's quirky and entertaining, so that's a plus. I couldn't really ask for more in a lab instructor. Highly recommend him. I am amazed at how fluidly and comprehensibly he speaks. It clears everything up if you just listen.
Schmeltzer is a very interesting professor but at times his teaching is hard to follow and he tends to not be very sympathetic.
Schmeltzer is a highly intelligent professor who reduces long, boring information about chemistry into short, digestible, and wholly comprehensible statements. He is extremely helpful one on one. His flaw is that he does not have much sympathy for those who dislike or are struggling with chemistry. If you are trying hard to learn, he will help you.
worst class ive ever taken. he has no sympathy for his students and thinks everyone should be an expert already. i would recommend him only if you are REALLLLY good at chemistry
For chemistry majors only. Clearly brilliant akward man. I still get mad everytime I see him. Look forward to 30min quizes outside of class, 'teaching' that consists of flying through a powerpoint, and swearing for cheap laughs. If you're a chemistry major, enjoy, if not I strongly suggest you look elsewhere.
Seems to have an inflated opinion of himself, while harboring an inherent dislike of his students. Appears somewhat lazy, yet expects his students to teach themselves. Lecture generally consists of reading slides that are reproduced from the textbook. Rarely any additional material or insight. Usually finds a way to blow off students questions
Schmeltzer clearly explains tough chemistry concepts. However, he expects far too much out of a general chemistry class. Expect to take a quiz every week and to STRUGGLE to get above a C on it. I took two very good chemistry classes in high school and I'm still seriously struggling in his class.
Schmeltzer seems to care most about students memorizing things they should be able to look up, then plugging and chuggging once the data and equations are memorized. There is little emphasis on learning the concepts behind the equations. If you expect to learn something take chem with Doyle
This professor and this class were terrible.
A disorganized, misorganized, misemphasized course taught by a professor who seems content to leave it that way
I don't understand all the negative comments here. When confused, I went to his office hours. Schmeltzer was very clear and helpful. And he ALWAYS took questions in class. He is a tough teacher but also very willing to work with students who seek his help
I didn't have him for class, but he was great for lab. I'm not a big fan of chemistry, but he made it fun/bearable. Very clear with instructions and willing to help. Always gave positive feedback. He was a little challenging during all of the final presentations, understandably. But overall, an easy A.
Great teacher! Tough, but a very lenient grader. Funny and engaging! Made Chemistry fun!
Very likeable guy, not a good teacher though. His notes are useless and he does not teach concepts adequately for some to understand. Found it very, very difficult to succeed in (or even pass) the class. This class has totally destroyed my interest in chemistry, I will not take another if I can avoid it.
Shcmeltz seems nice, but he is not a very good teacher. He doesn't realize that normal people aren't fluent in Chemistry already when they are in CHEM 132. His notes are minimal, his lectures are hard to follow, and he acts like he couldn't care less about whether you pass or fail. Not recommended.
Schmeltzer was not only a very engaging and interesting instructor, he was able to present the material in a way that allowed one to follow along but not bore. Others complain about the difficulty of passing or the inadequate explanations, and to this I would say that he is teaching in a manner to be expected in a collegiate setting.
Schmeltzer has an inability to get to the point. He uses too many words and chemistry vocabulary that the average student cannot understand. It seems as if he is only concentrated on getting through the material and is not worried if it makes sense to his studentst. students are left to teach themselves. I will never take a class with him again.
Another representative of what is wrong with the UNCA chemistry department. Seems more interested in impressing himself than teaching his students
Seems like a nice guy, but a lousy teacher and class. Basically, be prepared to teach yourself.
Terrible! Takes a difficult subject, and makes it more difficult still.
Non-chem majors need not apply. This guy is an impossibly bad lecturer. He skims over things without giving many relevant examples and is often heard saying that he doesn't feel like covering something, but that you still need to know it. He does that with most things actually... Meticulous grader. Not a bad guy, just a difficult teacher.
He tries to sound way too smart for his own good. The only class period I understood what he was saying was when he did a practice problem on the board. That was only once. I barely survived.
Dr. Schmeltzer is a really cool guy, but he is terrible at lecturing, and isn't very available to help outside of class. Even in his office hours, he's hard to track down. He really doesn't seem to care at all about how his students do. I went to him for help once, and he did nothing to help me.
Good hearted but difficult to learn from. Daily clicker quizes on material not yet covered. He often skips over several slides of information and comments that you should learn it on your own if you want an A in the course. Class is relatively easy but expect to be overwhelmed when it comes time for a test and you have to teach yourself everything
Very intelligent and well qualified, but is not a personable professor. He doesn't like to explain things in plain English, instead he elaborates in such a sophisticated manner that i must analyze his vocabulary before I can try to figure out what he actually said. Not helpful and depends on web tools to teach for him.
Well meaning, but extremely verbose and prone to tangents. Definitely knows what he's talking about, but the way he teaches is really not very good (imo) for Chem 132.
This teacher was decent with teaching and giving the information. However, he used foul language way too much. I would've learned the material just the same without the foul language. It was distracting, annoying, and just was not professional. Other than that, it was an ok class.
Hard class, good professor. Chemistry is a hard subject. The chemistry department is reputed to be the toughest in the state. If I didn't understand something, he took time after class to explain. He recognizes that students have real lives and is very understanding. Do the work, show up to class, let him know if you're struggling & you'll be fine.
Doesn't teach, provide information on material, or basically do anything. Clicker quizzes on material not explained brings your grade down. Basically be prepared to teach yourself.
Dr. Schmeltzer seems genuinely disinterested in teaching. Expect to teach yourself. He tries to be funny, but is ultimately very awkward. He often seems to not care how students do.
Chemistry is hard, but if you bother to ask questions, Schmeltzer is great at explaining. If you put in the effort by showing up to class, asking questions, going to his office hours if you need help, he will make sure you understand everything you need to make an A. Everyone I know failing also skipped a ton of classes & didn't do the work.
Schmeltzer is really funny (unless you have an issue with cursing) and class is pretty interesting. Like with all chem professors, don't expect him to teach you everything. You have to do the homework to do well! His exams aren't too hard and he's great at giving partial credit. Not an easy A, but it's chem! Beats chem at UNC-CH by a long shot!
Magestic
Awesome guy! I've had him for gen chem 1 and 2 and he's a great professor. Keeps the class interesting and always available to help outside of class. You use Youtube videos a lot in order to complete the pre-class assignments and prepare for the quizzes. Take Schmeltzer...he's hilarious!
He doesn't even teach. He tells you sections to read in your book, then tells you to watch youtube videos, and then you do a worksheet in class. If you ask a question you'll probably end up more confused by the time he answers it and honestly he is kind of rude. I can teach myself chemisty without having to pay per credit hour, thanks
We only had a couple of lectures and the information presented was not very understandable. You work in groups to learn the information, so if you don't understand you are out of luck. Next, most of the learning is done from youtube videos and they are usually pretty goofy! Be ready to teach yourself!! Very little help available!
Uses flipped classroom, doesn't give any instruction at all and instead of developing a interest for Chemistry, I would rather pick death than take this course over again.
I've never had him for lecture, but if you have him for lab, you're in for a really good, fun class. Beware, though, the entire course is a group project.
Barely any lecture time in class. Quizzes every class meeting.
What a legend
This class by far required the most work during the semester. But I also learned the most in this class. Watching the chemistry videos before class, then working on chemistry problems during class time was VERY helpful! But I wish Schmeltzer would lecture more, when he did it was very insightful
You have to show up to class and pay attention. If you show that you care about your grade (and will work for it), Schmeltzer will work with you, and is extremely accessible. He will not come to you though- you have to take advantage of the opportunities presented (which is expected in college). Would take again for sure.
Uses "flips" so don't expect a lecture and pray that you get a good group. Chem 132 is curved really hard though so put in the work to study for the big tests and you'll pass. You'd have to try to fail when a 60 is a C.
Chem 145 is a lab based class. Be aware, same lab group all semester! Dr. Schemelter is a very fair grader. His expectations are always clearly written out and accessible in moodle. Pay attention to details. Take thorough notes in lab. Try to understand what you are doing. He makes himself available to answer questions and assist with calculations.
This class was the worst possible experience I could have had in a chemistry class. The teacher does not make you feel comfortable when it comes to asking questions and there is no actual teaching. The teacher gives you a hand out after talking for five minutes and then leaves you to yourself to figure it out. I did more teaching towards myself.
He is a funny man and clearly knows his stuff, but his expectations for all assignments is ridiculous. His grading is also very harsh; points will be marked off for the smallest difference of wording: referring to something as a "machine" instead of an instrument, not mentioning how many times you should invert "shake" a solution, etc.
He doesn't lecture. You have to teach yourself everything. I wasn't able to give other classes much attention due to this. Go to tutoring if you want to do well. This class was more time consuming than necessary. Also, theres quizzes every day and he makes you feel uncomfortable for asking questions
Dr. Schmeltzer's class was SO helpful for me to learn chemistry! Although there was a LOT of homework, doing the assignments helped me to do well on the exams. I actually found no lectures to be good for me, as the problem sets we did in class were also REALLY important for the exams. The daily quizzes helped me to remember things for the exams.
He believes in the flipped classroom so be prepared to teach everything to yourself, and if you have questions be prepared to be looked at like an idiot. He is very smart but does not convey this knowledge in a good and accessible way. Also does not try and help the students who are clearly struggling in any way.
He's available outside of classtime for questions about assignments. He often asks you a question when you ask for help; sometimes it's helpful, sometimes it leads to extra confusion. He is detail-oriented so to get a good grade you can't rely solely on the written directions. Asking for help and what else you need to do/correct is 100% necessary.
He is extremely detail-oriented. Be prepared to have points taken off for little things. He does check up on each bench and may ask questions about what you are doing during experiments. His humor can be hit or miss for some people and sometimes can be too blunt in my opinion. Overall, has high expectations when it comes to assignments.
Dr. Schmeltzer is a great professor and is super helpful and accessible outside of class. He will help you understand the material, you just have to be willing to ask for help.
Horrible communicator. May be smart but really lacks teaching capabilities.
The only reason I'm not rating Schmeltzer a 5 is due to his lack of feedback on our papers. We are 1 month away from finals and there has not been a single piece of feedback given on one of my 5 papers. Confusing "pass" system where you get 3 free passes to use on an absence, or paper re-do, but it helps students. Super Easy A just do the papers.
liked Dr. Schmeltzer as a person, he is very funny and entertaining in class but also an extremely harsh grader. You have to be extremely good at following directions and have basic background understanding of stoichiometry to be even slightly successful in his class. he made chem145 from scratch so he knows this course like the back of his hand.
One of my most challenging classes yet at UNCA. There's a lot of group work, but Schmeltzer helped the students to form research groups based on common motivations and interests. My group worked really well together, and Schmeltzer helped us learn some difficult but cool chemistry lab techniques and experiments about plants and metals
CHEM145 with Dr. Schmeltzer was hell. The labs themselves were genuinely fun but the expectations for the amount and quality of work were way too high for a 100 level 1-credit-hour class. Work done outside of class is not explained and graded harshly.
Worst professor I have EVER taken. He grades extremely harsh and does not tell you what he expects. Im pretty sure he just looks for things to take off points (the type of professor to give you a 14.75/15 just so you dont get the full points). Avoid him at all costs!
he really got into the topics he talked about. generally a good teacher.
Groups are assigned randomly via form so you don't get a bad group. Make sure to start on group work ASAP as it is a lot and can be daunting when dealing with other classes. Group manuscript and presentation for final, but you work on it throughout the semester so its ok. Schmeltzer is hilarious and wants to see you succeed but is a hard grader!!
Dr. Schmeltzer, honestly a good teacher. Would I personally take a class with him again, probably not, but do I enjoy him as a person, yes. The amount of work load from a FYS was insane, most of my assignments were never truly up to his expectation. He is a tough grader.
Thinks this is high school and will threaten your attendance, even if you show up. Also, your attendance is a grade, but that's not the problem. He assigns so much reading and writing. There is one month of the semester left and I have yet to receive a grade on any of the work I completed! Will let you fix a paper after he grades it but won't grade
He will talk to TA's about specific students in a demeaning manner. Often make comments that are very inappropriate around students during extra help sessions. Takes off extreme amount of points for minor details. Waited until after SFI's were due to give feedback on work from September which we could not improve on. Avoid at all costs.
Honestly just don't take this class. We learned interesting information for the first few weeks but then it felt like he ran out of good material for class. The assignments were annoying and intrusive. If he doesn't understand your point in one part of an assignment he will give you a zero on the whole thing.
Professer Schmeltzer is potentially the worst professor I have had. He assigns an abhorrent amount of work for a class that is only being taken by most people as a requirement. The work is repetitive, boring, and uneccessary most of the time. He gives little to no feedback, takes forever to grade, and ties everything to attendance. Not worth it.
Schmeltzer has a great sense of humor, making the lab sessions enjoyable, but his grading for a level 100 course is quite strict. While the in-lab activities were fun and engaging, the expectations for work outside the lab were exceptionally demanding.
Not understanding of any at home emergencies.
Super frustrating professor. Despite HUM 214 being a graduation requirement it was literally my most demanding class in terms of reading and writing assignments, which is crazy considering I'm a LIT major. He also, notably, did not start submitting grades for the whole semester until finals week and never left feedback on any major assignments.
One of those classes where you're going to feel like you're on the verge of failing no matter what. He gives very salient and useful feedback, but IME the actual grading wasn't too harsh. Go to his office hours and get feedback. Is kind of unforgiving with mistakes, so double check you've printed/uploaded the right file when turning things in.
make sure to attend his office hours, very smart guy but can come across aloof and condescending at times.
He assigned about 45 separate assignments/forum posts, and did everything on a pass fail system that seemed like it might be based on how hard he thought you tried on the assignment not how well you followed the outline for it, but I wouldn't know because he only gave feedback on the three main papers, and it was one line. Super frustrating class.
Condescending. Rude. Believes his class should be the most important part of your life i.e. ENTITLED. First time I ever missed class emailed and explained I was sick. He did not read it, accused me of slacking off, skipping for fun and "clearly having better things to do". Grades unforgivingly, I became extremely anxious about attending class. NO.
All the other people saying he's the worst professor ever are exaggerating. He's not the best but I'd say he could definitely be a lot worse. My main issue with him is the fact that he grades everything on a pass/fail basis and doesn't ever leave any feedback. He also takes forever to grade, but other than that his class is alright.
