Great Professor! If you listen in class you will do well. All the material on the test are on the powerpoints, you just have to go to class and review the lecture material and you will do fine. He is really into what he teaches, and is not boring at all to listen to . You wont sleep durig class especially when he gets all worked up about weathe
Easy and he's cute as a button.
He gets really excited about the weather and he makes it interesting. The tests weren't too hard as long as you studied the slides and listened in class. He also just learned how to use the CPS clickers so go to class b/c he likes to take random attendance.
He is a great teacher! He really enjoys what he teaches! He always is fun to listen to, and is actually funny! I would definately recommend him!
I really enjoyed his class. He was precious and a fantastic teacher! Unlike some of the other science professors he kept the lectures really simple where we could actually understand and relate to the material. I totally recommend this class and professor!
Really cool prof who makes a seemingly boring subject interesting. He gives useful insight about the subject and makes class worthwhile.
Easy and fun class! I actually looked forward to going to learn about the weather. Tests come directly from lecture and are multiple choice, he posts all his lectures online. He is so cute!!!
Interesting guy, he makes the class fun. He gives a lot of chances for bonus points.
Very interested in his work and definitely knows his stuff. Takes attendance quizzes almost everyday with CPS pads. VERY VERY VERY willing to help... you just have to make the effort and call him. Tests are difficult, but study the slides (they're online) and PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS!! Highly recommended! :)
Very nice guy. He has a passion for his work, but understands that you probably don't. He makes it very interesting and likes to include the whole class. MAKE SURE YOU COME TO CLASS!! He takes roll almost everyday and does notice if you are there and paying attention. He gives Extra Bonus Points on Fridays!
This class is awful! I have been at UA 4 years, and this is by far the worst class I have ever taken. He treats a 101 class like it is a 400 level class, and he has no concept of the fact that everybody is just in there to get credit and has no interest in the subject. He is BORING! DO NOT TAKE HIM!
This guy is one of the better professors I have had. Take this for your science elective. He tries to make the material useful and relevant to everyday life. The subject is boring but he is funny sometimes when he says random things just to see if anybody is listening. Go to class and pay attention and you will do fine.
FANTASTIC professor. Made a subject I cared nothing about interesting, and it was great. Seriously, take him. He's super helpful.
I enjoyed the class for the most part, but sometimes it felt like he was trying to show everybody how smart he was. His tests were also pretty hard, but he did do a review day, but even so, some of the questions made no sense. I would recommend him overall though.
I'm an A student, but this class was not one of the better classes I've had. His teaching style is, let's just say, unique. He teaches solely from diagrams, graphs. His tests are worded in vague manners and don't really test your knowledge. Also, he has a hard time responding to emails in a prompt fashion. I wouldn't recommend this class.
He's a great professor. He knows what he's talking about and likes to share anecdotes. Willing to help with just about anything. I somewhat enjoyed looking at weather before but I really enjoy knowing something I can use in real life. Overall he's a nice enthusiastic guy; I would love to take him again.
Senkbeil is my favorite professor i have had so far. He makes the subject easy to understand and is very approachable outside of class. He is willing to help you out with whatever you need. Plus, he is absolutely adorable. Easy A if you go to class and take notes. TAKE HIM! :)
This rating is for those who find anything science related challenging. Although Senkbeil was VERY good in that he posted all notes online, his attitude was discouraging. I asked for help and clarity several times, and it was somewhat received, but in a condescending way. He likes everyone to know how smart he is!KNOW THE MAPS-APPLYING ON TESTS KEY
Great class. Great teacher. I think it would be hard to teach atmospheric processes (basic weather), and keep it interesting. The material may be boring, but, the teacher wasn't. I really enjoyed his class. His class does require you to participate and try to learn. His tests are challenging, yet basic. Good teacher.
Really good teacher!! Makes learning about the weather interesting. Tests are easy if you listen in class, but there are some application questions on his tests. Really easy class overall
Really cool dude and makes this class much more interesting than it really is. Go to class and pay attention on review day and a B is very reasonable. Labs are easy too.
GREAT teacher! I hate science and he made GY and weather interesting. If you go to class and study the notes he gives online, you'll make an A easily. He is cocky about what he knows, but I looked forward to going to his class. Book isn't needed at all.
Ummm I have to disagree with some of you guys. This class was HARD! He puts the powerpoints online but they are sooooo long and I hated studying for the tests. The material is boring, the lab is easy though. His test were very difficult! His lectures were boring too, and you HAVE to go to class.
Dr. Senkbeil is a very good professor. He isn't like most, however. He lectures involve mostly diagrams with a lot of explanation. Notes are a must if you want to be successful. He likes telling stories and making jokes. He can seem arrogant at times, but he has the right to be because he knows A LOT. Overall, I recommend.
The lectures can get a little boring and he assumes everyone is from Tuscaloosa which can be frustrating because if you aren't from Tuscaloosa you can't answer some of the questions he asks in class.
I disagree a bit with some of the other comments. He made the class interesting but It was HARD. You HAVE to go to class and I still had troubles. The tests were confusing because they were online so I think he tried to make them a bit harder. Also, call or go in to talk with him. He doesn't answer emails much or it takes him a long time to.
Class was pretty interesting. This year he made the tests online and you can look up the answers but you'll probably never get above an A- on them. He said in class "the final will balance out your grade" and it sure does - it was really hard. I'd say if you're a good student and kinda care, you can get a B, and if you work hard, maybe an A-.
Such a great professor!! I hated Geography but he made it really interesting and fun. Goes over the weather the first 15 minutes of class so it's actually helpful for gamedays. Quizzes are online, and aren't hard if you have the notes
Senkbeil was a great teacher. His only flaw was he asked too many open-ended questions for the class and would get mad if no one answered. Go to class! He asks multiple questions in class for your attendance.
I hated this class. I worked very hard the first half of the semester and got a D on the test and didn't pay attention the last half and got a D. The material he teaches is not on the test. The onley reason I got a B was for attendance and Lab(Which I got a 98 in). I didn't learn anything.
Do not take his class. Worst teacher in history. He rambles on making you think the stuff is easy and then he has the hardest tests. There is no good way to study for his test because he asks out of this world questions. He does scale A LOT at the end of the semester but I would just advise you to take another teacher.
I, like most people, took this class for an easy Natural Science credit. The lecture portion of this class is very difficult. The tests are really hard, even if you study and prepare for them. Luckily the lab portion is super easy and will balance out your grade at the end of the semester.
Mr. Senkbeil is a good teacher and you can tell that he really loves what he does but the class is super boring. The test are really hard as well. He does a lot of online quizzes and if you miss an exam you have to write an essay as your make up. But the lab is super easy and raises your overall grade in the end. Lab is mandatory.
Dr. Senkbeil is a very smart man who knows a lot about geography and climatology. If you don't like the material presented in lower level courses, you won't like GY413. Tests are outrageously difficult. Only two tests. Excel data was no fun for weeks. I would not recommend this class unless you're obsessed with climatology.
Dr. Senkbeil is a wonderful teacher. He is very smart, and knows more than any other professor I have ever had. His test can be a little difficult, but if you go to class and take notes you should be fine, Attendance is key to success. Its 15% of your grade anyways. Take him!
Dr. Senkbeil is one of the best teachers i have had at the University. He is possible the most intelligent professor i have ever had, he truly knows his stuff. Make sure you go to class and pay close attention. The lecture is the test. You do not need a textbook at all. Just pay attention to what he says and take good notes and you should be fine.
Dr. Senkbeil was a fantastic teacher for GY470. You can tell his passion is for meteorology and severe weather topics. I learned SO much in this class. I would highly recommend it for anyone remotely interested in geography/meteorology.
He is super interested in his subject and he knows a ton, with a bunch of real world experience. I really enjoyed the lectures and was surprised by how interesting the class was to me. Decent amount of energy, and he throws in a few jokes every now and then. Tests are pretty darn hard, but they're not much of the total grade. Definitely recommend
Senkbeil is amazing. He is interesting to listen to and makes learning the information fun because his passion is contagious. He totally knows what he is talking about and everything you learn you can use in real life. If I could take another one of his classes and still graduate on time, I would in a heartbeat. He is the best! *Book isn't needed.
Good teacher and interesting lectures, but tests are more application than material. Really studied and tests were still very tough.
A great professor who really loves what he is teaching and tried to make the lecture as interesting as he can. You only get 2 test and they are hard. Attendance isnt mandatory and all the power points are online going to class does help. You have to take a lab for 25% of your overall grade if you skip that more then 3 times you auto fail the course
This was by far my favorite lecture class I have had so far here. The tests are tough. I made two 80s on both the exams and studied pretty hard. Everything else besides the tests are easy points. Even with two 80s I still managed an A- in the class. He has interesting lectures, is a great guy, and will keep you entertained.
Senkbeil is a great guy, very passionate about what he teaches, but struggles to really get students engaged in his lectures, which will often move quickly and appear not to be in an entirely logical order. To be fair, it is Geography, and it is in a large lecture hall. Also, the tests tend to be on exceptionally tough and oddly specific material.
Prof. Senkbeil will give extra credit if there is a low number of students on Fridays, but beware the tests. The tests in his class can get pretty complicated if you don't do the online reading assignments.
I had Dr. Senkbeil for geography 101 and applied climatology (GY 413) and thoroughly enjoyed both of his classes. He really makes learning interesting and is obviously passionate about his field of study. His grading is extremely fair and his classes aren't very difficult if you do your work and put in effort to succeed. Highly recommend!
As long as you do your homework, go to class, TAKE NOTES, and study a decent amount you will be fine. This guy is the BEST lecturer, so beware: You will consider changing your major to Geography after this class!
Great lectures. I had no idea what the power points were saying and still managed an A because he was able to explain it so well. You have to go to class. i don't think it's possible to pass if you don't show up and pay attention because you will be beyond lost.
I am going to be honest. I have never been good at science and I didn't expect this to be an easy A, however this is an Intro level course and the I speak for my class when I say his test were unrealistic. Our class had a GroupMe and we helped study with each other and our class average WITH THE CURVE was a 50. Expect to study a lot to pass.
Professor Senkbeil is an amazing lecturer, but his tests were a little hard for an intro class. He is very passionate about his field of study and actually convinced me to sign up for a geography minor. I will be taking GY 302 (Climatology) with him as soon as it is offered again.
liked the guy personally ,cool teachr, tests were hard asf
Exams were hard for 100 level course, demanding strong conceptual knowledge of material. He balances out the hard exams by weighting them less and offering lots of extra credit, however it's still frustrating to be faced with tests many times more difficult than anything else in the course. Attendance is important, as for many it's not intuitive.
Dr. Senkbeil is a great guy, very helpful and accessible outside of class if you run into any issues. Very passionate about what he teaches.
A truly exemplary and energetic professor with a clear passion for the subject. That being said, the majority of students in this class are only in it to fulfill their science credit. DO NOT take this course for the credit. Great professor, but horrible for individuals with no passion for science who just want to get through their requirements.
This is the hardest class I have taken at the university. GY 101 is the most basic it can get and I'm shocked that a professor could turn it into something so difficult. There's no clear chapters, the labs don't correspond with the lectures, the online quizzes cover material we've never been taught. This course is stupid hard and a waste of time
If you do not go to class you will fail the midterm and final. There is some extra credit but its worth half a point. He is passionate about what he does but wants everyone to be as into geography as he is.
Never went to class but it's hard to pass if you don't attend because of how ridiculous his exams are. His tests are ridiculously difficult for a basic intro class. I passed with 40's and 60's on my exams which are weighted at 19% and 20% of your grade. The rest of the class is based on lab, quizzes & homework which are very easy.
there's no one worse than prof. senkbeil. he doesn't respond to emails, doesn't have consistent lectures, and get angry when people don't attend class even when attendance isn't mandatory. made the final exceptionally hard out of anger for lack of attendance. did not hear of 1 student that received higher than a 50 on the final exam.
Literally got a 30 on the final and I went to class, I dont know anyone who got higher then a 60 on it. He gets mad when no one shows up for class but attendance is not required so? He is really nice but the only test you have is a final then quizzes online and In class, he will tell you when the in class ones are but those are impossible to pass
He gets mad when not many people show up. He flies through his PowerPoints. He doesnt explain his slides in much detail either but he can be pretty funny sometimes. His final was insanely hard. I studied for it and there was barely anything on it that I had studied. And guess what I failed the final. And I somehow passed the class with an A.
Literally the worst prof I have ever had. This was the first semester where the school was fully online, and this guy made it 10x more stressful. I am not even kidding when I say the ONLY things that we had in this class were some quizes and homeworks, and then a final exam. We had to teach ourselves through videos. Never talked to him once. Horrid
He's a tough grader. No extra credit. Get ready to read and teach yourself. Mediocre communication. Most work is out of the ebook and a lot of stuff on quizlet. Interesting class, average professor...I wouldn't take him again. This class was during COVID so the curriculum may be different in person.
Dr Senkbeil was my favorite professor because of how engaging and interactive he was in class. It made you genuinely care about and appreciate what you were learning. If you have the opportunity to take this: Do it!
Professor Senkbeil wasn't the professor I registered for. Due to uncontrollable circumstances, he was a substitute for my class. Inadequate professor with sarcasm and no will to help. So just be aware that even if you register for another professor, you might end up with him as your substitute. Tests are irrelevant to material, and he won't care.
His class really was not enjoyable at all. Spent a lot of time rambling about things not related to the lecture, and flew through the slides when he was on topic. During test days he was always so angry and ripped into the students that didn't show up right on time. The tests were difficult and hard to study for. Wouldn't recommend.
The homework is tedious but easy. Tests are heavily based on lectures so go even though attendance isn't required, but aren't that hard. Barely any math for this class. If you've taken environmental science some concepts are familiar. Senkbeil is funny and lectures are pretty engaging, you can tell he's really passionate about what he teaches.
This class was absurd. The lectures are mind numbingly boring and the information that you are supposed to "learn" in this class could not be more useless. Sinkbil also missed 4 consecutive classes to go a conference and gave us tests back to back weeks. Also didnt give us midterm grades, and has a weird grading scale that doesn't make sense.
Dr. Senkbeil is an amazing professor. His tests are very much based on his lectures. He provides powerpoints to look at outside of class, but then in class goes more detailed into them, which is then what the tests are based off of. I loved his class and learned a lot. If you go to class and pay attention you will well.
Amazing professor who loves what he is teaching. The group projects were so fun to do and really helped with understanding what was taught in class. Some of the labs were a little tedious to do, but he provides good directions and helps whenever he is asked!
I beg you to take someone else. Quick checks are insanely hard for how understanding his lectures are, and the only thing somewhat saving peoples grades are lab scores. He sent out an email before our final saying the class average after everything should be 76% which is "normal and average for this class." This class will kill GPA's beware.
My overall GPA is a 3.79 and after hours of studying I am still finishing with a C+. Take somebody else, he is not worth it...
TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!
Great class and prof. Dr. Senkbeil is funny and a great lecturer. A LOT of weekly reading but it's always helpful in understanding concepts. Very discussion based class, participation matters. Attendance isn't mandatory but you won't do well if you miss a lot. Did not like the exam requirement of matching authors to their papers.
He is a nice dude so all these reviews saying he isn't are lying. He loves what he teaches. However the class is insanely hard for 100 level. I just feel like he sometimes does the most for no reason. A lot of kids who were once straight A students either failed or barely made it by. I wouldn't recommend taking it if you want a good GPA.
Dr. Senkbeil is GREAT!! I learned a lot, without doing a lot of work. There are weekly readings; and the final is comprehensive (matching authors to abstracts). Take notes and you will be fine. Grades fairly easy and is super understanding!
Look me in the eyes when I say this...do not take this man's class. He somehow manages to take a cool relatively simple subject and makes it a bajillion times harder than it needs to be. His lectures are hardly informational. Has these tests, which he won't call tests for some reason, that are "super easy" and makes you feel bad for not acing them.
Senkbeil is a passionate professor who loves what he teaches. He makes expectations clear on what will be graded and what will be on knowledge checks, as long as you follow that, this class will not be as difficult as people say!
He does 5 "Knowledge Checks" (will not call them tests) that are challenging. However, he offers tons of bonus points through CampusKnot just for going to class each day. As long as you study the powerpoints word for word, you will pass with flying colors. Test is strictly pulled off the slides. He does have a weird grading system, so beware.
Attendance is not mandatory but it is pretty hard to get a high grade without attending lecture. The good news is that his lectures are worth it because he is entertaining. Slideshows are very bare-bones so unless you're a textbook reader the only way to get most of the info from the class is paying attention in class and taking good notes.
Senkbeil was more difficult than my GY 102 class which I rarely attended. He has a funny dad-like personality, and he's super knowledgeable about his subject. However, I would highly recommend attending class as often as possible and take good notes because some quiz answers are only mentioned in class and can't be found on the posted PowerPoints.
Very good at teaching the material. If you show up to class you will do good. He was one of my favorite professors I've ever had because although he was hard core, he was very passionate about the subject and made the class very exciting.
Take all his bad reviews with a grain of salt. The tests arent hard at all, pay attention in class and study for a few hours the night before. Attendance not mandatory but if you go to class you get extra points for his "polls" which count for 27% of ur grade. Good teacher just pay attention and youll be fine. If you dont get a B you werent trying.
I had him for GY101. Show up to classes and you'll do good on the quizzes. If you don't show up to class, the slides he posts are useless and the quizzes will be hard. Learned this the hard way. Had to fail this class. Rants a lot, but at least it keeps it from being boring. Would take again.
He's a good guy, the lectures are engaging, and he is hilarious. Tests are menigable but still a little hard. Attendance isn't mandatory but you get points.
Dr. Senkbeil is super engaging—you'll learn even if you try not to. Attendance counts as extra credit but is crucial. He doesn't use a textbook; learning happens in class. Tests are geography-heavy, especially on locations. He's a tough grader, but there's enough extra credit to earn an A if you put in the effort.
I dont understand these reviews at all. Attendance isnt mandatory, but if you go he gives you points back on the weekly poll questions you miss. The polls are easy to ace you literally answer 4 easy questions a week. He has 4 "quizzes" that are just 30 question tests, they arent easy but just study. He made the subject interesting and is funny.
I thought he was a really good prof. The class is very easy if you go to class. He pretty funny and engaging and hit tests come off the notes.
He speaks to the class like you are stupid and makes fun of the younger generation almost constantly saying we aren't smart enough to be successful adults in our future because of the way we were raised. Attending class and actively listening gets you nowhere with his quiz material. If you care about your GPA, take a different instructor.
The GOAT. Legit easier than any of my high school sciences. He does ramble a lot but it is funny. He is a funny guy. Show up to lecture and you are chilling. Test are so easy
Have to come to class for a decent grade, everything important is said in class. Lowkey my goat, but I wish I ended with a better grade. I would always bomb his tests and idk why. He is very caring, funny, and super knowledgeable about geography. Come to class, study, and you will be fine. Great guy. Kinda difficult if you're not science brained
He was great, very real and relatable.
