Overall, nice guy. You can see his enthusiasm for the course. Classes do get a little bit boring at times unless you try to participate (which is a good idea because it is a good percentage of your grade). There's is no homework besides reading an article or two before most classes. You are given pop quizzes on the reading 5 times a semester.
Professor Smith is definitely enthusiastic about what he teaches. The readings are difficult to understand but he explains everything in class. His class was challenging but he is more than willing to help you succeed. five pop quizzes, one midterm and one final. He gives you all the test essay questions at least a week before the tests.
Jason Smith is extremely enthusiastic about philosophy. There are five pop-quizzes which are easy enough as long as you read. The midterm and final are also pretty straight forward as long as you take notes during class and do the readings. The only reason I didn't get an A in his class is b/c I didn't participate,a large portion of your grade.
I took him for Intro and loved his class. It's kinda boring but he makes it easy to understand. There are no tests, just 5 pop quizzes that count for 25% of your grade. If you do the reading they're easy. He gives and proofreads the possible midterm essays for you and picks two of the three. Plus he cancels class a lot. I highly recommend!
Professor Smith is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Entered his class thinking it would be an easy, fun core to get out of the way, and ended up learning way more about myself than I thought I would from a class. Everyone should spend some time studying philosophy, especially with Smith. Great class, awesome teacher.
Prof Smith is the BEST! He's so enthusiastic about what he teaches & he makes it easy to understand. I learned so much from him & genuinely enjoyed his class. 5 pop quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final & he gives you the questions a week in advance. He's got a great sense of humor (almost sarcastic) & has that nerdy-sexy thing going on. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Prof Smith was great! He is clear at the start of the semester what he expects. Do the readings every class because he gives pop quizzes, but you'll be just fine if you what he says to do. He is always willing to meet for office hours. He's really sexy and smart, definitely would recommend to others.
Jason Smith is such a great professor! He really gets into the material and makes it so interesting to learn! A majority of the class is reading and you really can't skip the readings because he gives pop quizzes. But they aren't too bad, they consist of 5 multiple choice questions. The only other tests are the midterm and final.
Reading is important, As there is a reading for every class and 6 pop quizzes throughout year. However, most readings aren't too long. He keeps class interesting, and is a very interesting/non-boring man himself. He really wants his students to do well. I highly suggest him as a teacher.
Smith is one of the best professors I've taken. He care about his students and wants what you want - for you to do well. The readings can be difficult at 1st but he explains in depth during class, but you should have a basic understanding of it for the quizzes, 6 pop quizzes, drops lowest quiz, midterm and final. Want to minor b/c of his class!!
Long but very interesting lectures. Gives 6 pop quizzes, drops the lowest.5 mc and only on the previous nights reading so as long as you keep up with reading you're fine. Extensive review before midterm and final. Really wants to see his students do well. If it wasn't reviewed properly he won't test you on it. Very reasonable, and funny professor.
A very nice person and cares about students but really strict about attendance. 8 absences and its an automatic F regardless of the reason. Subject is very dense and hard to follow. The best part is that he gives the questions for the midterm and final ahead of time so you can prepare. Thought it was a hard class but I would take him again.
Professor Smith is a great professor who really loves what he teaches. His pop quizzes are only multiple choice so just keep up with the reading. He really despises the use of phones in class and if he sees it he will mark you as an unexcused absence. He gives all the questions for the midterm and final beforehand and helps you prepare your answers
Great Prof, kind of awkward and lectures can get boring, but the class load is manageable and lots of his topics are extremely interesting. Midterm and Final are an easy A if you put in the work. Beware of pop quizzes, even if you read theyre still tricky but he drops the lowest grade.
Material wasn't the most exciting, but he made lectures interesting and relateable for the most part. He tells everyone about the pop quizzes in the beginning of the semester - just beware and be prepared for one always/when you least expect it. For the midterm and the final (the only exams) he gives you the questions and goes over them as a class.
He is a pretty good professor. Just really read and study the material. Pop quizzes are fair if you actually did the reading. Only thing that got annoying was his overbearing vegan lectures. I got a B-, but I could have easily gotten an A in his class if I worked harder. Study, prepare, and you will do just fine.
Professor Smith is a genuine, intelligent, and interesting guy. He has a really endearing personality, and you can tell how much he absolutely loves philosophy. His passion for the subject and supportive nature made the course especially interesting. I definitely recommend his class.
This was a really good class. I was hoping for an easy philosophy 200 class but I definitely did not get that. We had two 5 page papers and one 8 page paper with a TON of reading and difficult quizzes every class... BUT, this class was actually not too bad. Prof Smith is an incredible guy (little weird sometimes). He kept the turbo interesting
Professor Smith made me love philosophy. He is super encouraging in class whenever someone participates. The readings are kind of confusing but he always explains them in class so there's no more confusion. Your grade is just the midterm, final and pop quizzes on the readings. He goes over every possible exam question beforehand so it's not hard.
Definitely a good class to take for core credit. 7 pop quizzes on the readings which aren't too bad at all and one midterm and final which is just in class writing. don't really have to pay attention to do well.
Jason is a very passionate teacher, but if you are looking for an easy core class this is not it. His class consists of 7 pop quizes based on the readings (which you can do and still get a 60 pretty easily), a midterm (2 short answer- 3 paragraphs each), and an essay (7-9 paragraphs), as well as a final (2 essays- 5-7 paragraphs). Def a hard class
Professor Smith is a G. Not only are his lectures amazing, but his homework is usually just online readings or from the textbook. Sure, the pop quizzes can be annoying but you review the midterm and final at least 2-3 classes ahead. He likes to see participation, even if it's a simple question or comment.
He gives you pop quizzes before even going over the reading and the questions are not relevant to the midterm and final or the overall meaning. Makes everything about being vegan. He gives interesting lectures, but has MAJOR ANGER MANAGEMENT issues. He yelled at me for going to office hours (only professor who ever did this to me and I'm a senior).
Professor Smith is a nice guy and can be funny at times. He gives pop quizzes on homework readings that are do-able. The midterm and final he gives you the questions ahead of time, but grades extremely difficult and if you don't write exactly what he says in lecture you won't do well. Participation is graded very heavily
Prof. Smith is a terrible professor. He is not approachable and he expects you to treat his class as the most important class you have. He gives quizzes before each class that are difficult and grades the papers harshly. This class is too hard for just a core requirement. Do not take this professor if you are looking for an A.
Good professor, harsh grader and 7 pop reading quizzes. He doesn't like devices so you can only take handwritten notes and if you skip class he posts nothing online. Found his philosophy class very interesting, but he's definitely harder than other philosophy professors.
Not too much reading assigned each night, there are pop quizzes that are really easy if you read. Def harder than other teachers but he gives you the midterm and final questions beforehand.
Very hard, no electronics allowed. Classes are boring and he mumbles on the whole time. Don't be late and don't expect to be let out even a minute early.
Online philosophy of religion turbo, but wasn't too bad. Reading were short or at least do-able and he gives really good explanations, which is helpful for a philosophy class. 2 formal papers with required revisions, multiple choice reading quizzes on BB before every class, 2 longish journal entries, and 2 shorter discussion post, participation.
Avoid this professor at all cost. He grades your papers extremely hard, and only wants things done his way, your point of view does not matter to him. Definitely not the professor you want to fulfill a core credit
He does give you some good grading opportunities, but he does not respect many peoples opinions, including myself. I got a lower grade on one of the writing assignments because my view contradicted with his. Also was outspoken about his political views. A is doable but youve gotta be careful
Hated this class. Absolutely horrible.. word of advice drop him ASAP during add drop
The semesters not even halfway finished and this is the only class I dont like this semester. Lectures are hard to follow Bc theyre boring and just his explanations are hard to follow. I end up zoning out most of the time and same for the readings he assigns. Really wish Id gotten into my first choice philosophy class
You have to participate in this class in order to get an A. The whole class was discussion based. There was one midterm, a couple response papers and a final essay. My class was on zoom and he was borderline rude when calling people out for not paying attention but other than that he was a decent guy. I would only take him if you enjoy talking.
Please I am begging you do not take this class it was the worst class I have ever taken.
I'm sorry but he is so boring. I almost fell asleep in class everyday. Not a ton of homework but there is difficult reading before every class.
This class really burnt me out. He just grades too tough and lectures were very boring.
I loved having Professor Smith as a teacher. He grades extremely fairly and the pop quizzes are easy if you do the readings assigned before each class. There is a reading before each class, but the workload is definitely manageable. The assignments are interesting and never anything difficult. I really enjoyed having Professor Smith as a teacher.
Avoid at all costs. Toughest grader I've had at Fairfield. Went to go to his zoom office hours and told me to "read and figure it out then come back and talk to me." Makes the class so stressful for no reason and expects everyone to understand the material easily. If your opinions don't match his expect an F.
It must be the class, because Prof Smith has been pretty awesome so far. Always guides interesting and thought provoking debates. He does give 7 pop quizzes, but read and you'll be fine. Hes pretty respectful of differing opinions and is very passionate about his teaching. if youre up for a slightly more difficult phil101 class, take him he's great
Honestly, he hasn't been too bad so far. He does grade participation every class but as long as you say something you're fine. The class is discussion based. Pop quizzes are easy as long as you do the readings. Overall it's not as terrible as what people are saying on here you just have to put in the effort to get a good grade.
Prof Smith was very sweet and a good teacher. You have to participate every class because he writes down if you do or don't which is a grade. 7 pop quizzes on the readings and the questions are very specific so make sure you read, but easy if you did. he gives extra credit on assignments but his class does require a decent amount of work
I had him for both PHIL1101 and 2220, both online. I really enjoyed his lectures and explanations, they were super interesting and he respects all views. Be sure to share your thoughts, he loves that. He always got me thinking. 2 journals and an essay or two, not too bad.
His lectures were some of the most interesting I have heard. The class engages in deep discussions about actually interesting material. Very little time spent on old philosophers and the like. The only thing to be aware of is that he does pop quizzes somewhat frequently. Overall a great experience
Professor Smith knows what he is talking about and enjoys hearing what students think of the topics discussed. Do NOT take if you won't participate, you also can't skip. Assigns about 30 pages of dense reading for every class, have to do it because there are seven pop quizzes. Only 4-5 writing assignments. Very nice but strict rules. No technology.
Where do I start... DON'T take him for philosophy. Ridiculous amount of reading, hard text, 7 pop quizzes from reading, need to participate or no A, pushes his liberal views on people, indoctrinates about how meat is bad, very odd, midterm super hard, 2 journal entry and 2 discussion forum pretty easy, final paper not bad either just painful class
Seems like a nice guy but do not take him. If you don't do the hours of reading each week, you'll fail the pop quizzes. If you don't participate, it'll affect your grade. Hard grader on the final paper. Other work is not too bad. By far the hardest class I've taken and I've had both Dr.L and Rakowitz... Wish I would've dropped this class.
I'm honestly surprised at the number of good reviews here. I had this professor for philosophy and let me just say, do not take him. Extremely hard grader, especially for the midterm and final papers. Attendance is mandatory, for he only gives each student 2 unexcused absences. If you're thinking of taking him, please don't.
His lectures were always interesting but way too much work for an elective class. Have to participate every class to get an A and cannot skip, harsh grader on the midterm and final papers, weekly readings, 7 pop quizzes but two get dropped, and no technology allowed. Bottom line is you really have to work to get an A or B in this class.
Took this guy for philosophy because registration went really bad for me. He literally gave me an anxiety attack every time. I had more work for this intro philosophy class then my other 4 classes combined! DO NOT TAKE. If you get him as a freshman, DROP ASAP during add drop.
I almost feel bad for him cause he seems like he could be a good guy, but do not take him. Very demeaning, make sure to stay away from the bathroom cause if your in there for too long its an absence. Write what he wants to hear and you'll be fine if not it will get nitpicked and nothing will be enough. Loves chicken sandwiches.
disgusting professor, has little to no sympathy.
Do NOT take this professor. He is a terrible teacher and disgusting. He has a rule where if you do not wear a mask or you pull it down to take a sip of water(this was after the mask mandate was lifted for class here), he will mark you, for the day, as an unexcused absence. If you get 3 unexcused absences, you're marked down 1/3 of a letter grade.
Nice enough guy, but makes the class way too hard. The amount of reading you would need to do to have an A is absurd. Really weird dude, will rant about processed meats A LOT. Grading system is flawed and not consistent. Read every single inch of the reading to pass the freaking pop quizzes like every week. Not the best for an intro class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR I AM TRAUMATIZED. By far the worst professor I've taken at Fairfield. For an intro class, the course load and assigned readings are way too excessive. This professor thinks the world revolves around his classes so he's not understanding to different students' circumstances and is not very flexible.
I had anxiety and dreaded going to his class every day that I had that class. Multiple readings every week. The readings are very time-consuming and hard to understand. Most are 10-30 pages each. The class is extremely boring and keeping up with the lectures is hard because he doesn't really break down the topics and concepts so that its digestible
Extremely harsh toward students. Discussion-based so not talkative don't take it. For essays, he is an extremely harsh critic,if the views within your essay don't match his views you will not even pass.He has extremely unrealistic expectations of students and shows no sympathy. Class is depressing and for your mental health and GPA dont take him
Even though I really like this professor as a person and his class was thought provoking, I cannot go as far as to recommend him as he is very difficult in his grading and there is so much reading. I fixed every issue he had with my first paper after talking to him to make it as flawless as possible and he still only gave me a B+
Dr Jason Smith is by far among the best professors I have encountered so far at Fairfield. His impressive credentials and experience paired with his brilliant mind make him an incredible instructor. Dr Smith defines the standard of academic quality which any professor should aspire to. He is a true academician in the highest sense of the word.
Professor Smith is a great professor and he really cares about what he's teaching and cares about each student. There are 2 papers for this class and he grades them pretty harshly but if you go to classes and do the readings and journals, there is a lot of padding for your grade to counter the harsh paper grades. Lots of reading and participation.
Nice guy and his lectures were interesting for the most part, even with it being a turbo. However, there is a lot of reading for homework, that he quizzes you on before each class (easy if you do it). Papers are not too bad, just very extensive and ceiling seems to be around a B+ for each one.
You learn a lot and do less work relative to other classes. Prof is hilarious which makes lectures interesting and amusing to attend. Is very picky when it comes to grading papers but provides good feedback to improve. Pop quizzes but they're simple given you do the (relatively short) readings. Would highly recommend for a very worthwhile PH class.
He is overall a very good teacher. You will have lots of reading, and he will give you a quiz basically every class based on the reading. So you have to read, and it's a lot. He is a fun teacher and is great at getting the point across. He is an extremely hard grader on papers, and gave us opportunities for re-writes.
He was the worst teacher I ever had. He was rude to all students and almost half of my class had to withdraw. You will not do well if he doesn't like what you say in your papers. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Jason Smith was not only a harsh grader but also incredibly rude to students who were having trouble keeping up. This was incredibly difficult and an overall rough experience for a for-credit class. If you have any other options, do not take this class!
IGNORE all other reviews, if you put effort in you will learn and love this class, and do well. He loves to have fun as well as teach. He even incorporated a mandatory pajama day (school appropriate) and one of his office hours is a barbecue event in the quad! Such a great guy who cares for his students and wants them to do well.
Professor Smith is the best. Great Philosophies! He cares deeply about his students and is willing to meet whenever. Even Saturdays! He does a great job tying in his modeling career to the class. Also If you want to get on his good side, he loves Michael Jackson.
The worst and HARDEST teacher I've ever had. I guarantee you no one got above B's on his essays and the class is discussion based, and everyone is just trying to get those participation points. He literally gives no guidance on those essays and expects you to write your essays based on what he knows in his head. I WOULD GIVE ZEROS if i could.
Doesn't use PowerPoints, lectures are confusing and long. Won't ever give you a good grade on a paper no matter how many times you use his corrections. Quizzes every week on at least 4 readings that are long and confusing, the questions are specific examples you won't know unless you read everything page for page. Do not take ever
constant pop quizzes and very tough grader on papers. would not take again.
Ignore these reviews below me. Smith gives the most immaculate head-winds to your academic career. When I was doing badly, he fixed it. He turned my frown upside-down. :( ---> :)
On the days when I had this class, I had anxiety and dreaded going. Several readings every week. Readings are time-consuming and difficult to understand. He gives zero guidance and expects to write out what he knows in his head. IMPOSSIBLE!
Tough grader but gives great lectures. Really enjoyed this class!! You must put in the work and participate a lot! Go to office hours!
Professor Smith is definitely not an easy grader, but his lessons are more than interesting enough to make up for it. Classes consist of engaging and thought-provoking discussions of the material rather than just having him lecture for an hour. If you're willing to put in the work, his Critical Thinking course is amazing and well worth taking.
Dr. Smith makes more effort than most to connect with the students and genuinely wants them to succeed. Occasionally a little snarky, but for the most part encourages different opinions in class. Lectures were pretty interesting, but watch out for those pop quizzes (actually do the reading). All around a great guy, but a tough grader for sure.
Terrible do not take courses with him please, harsh grading and unreasonable due dates for assigments. Anyone but him would be worlds better! Do yourself a favor!
Look at other reviews and the upvotes and downvotes of all of them... Thats all you need to know.
I learned in my statistics course that over half of the comments are fake. No one likes this guy.
Constant pop quizzes and you will not do well unless you read every single page of those readings word for word and memorize. Makes philosophy harder than it needs to be when it is already so confusing. Half of the class had to withdraw. Ugh! I have to do philosophy next semester and I am traumatized!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASSS
I'll shoot you straight, decent guy. Pop quizzes and pretty harsh grader on papers. Loves to on tangents about his visits to tropical rainforests and the tribal lands of Africa. Starts the first class with a special dance from the Yoruba peoples of West Africa. If you can accurately depict this on the final you get a 5 point bonus.
I am NOT shot straight! The WORST philosophy instructor ever. Makes the learning environment so stressful that it is a burden to go to class. Introduction to philosophy should not be a stressful traumatizing experience! Ridiculous ways to get absences.
Back then on zoom, he made us have our cameras on and stare into the screen, and if we moved our eyes, he would get angry.
Ignore the other reviews. Class is always thought provoking and discuss
awful awful awful. holds you late, 6 hours of reading a week, such a harsh grader, not lenient what so ever. one time he held us late and i went on my phone after class and he yelled at me.
overall good teacher but was overly tough on grading. gave some papers that were graded on completion, but the papers he graded on merit he graded very tough. made my class rewrite our first papers because the average was a C-. only allows 2 absences for the whole semester before it affects your grade. lots of reading but learned a lot. he is nice.
Overall decent teacher, but you really have to work for it. Grades harsh, but you can rewrite your papers. He's kind, connects with students more than most and wants them to succeed. Occasionally caustic, but often promotes class debate. The lectures were engaging, but the pop quizzes were a real bear. Def not the easiest 2000 level philosophy.
AVOID TAKING THIS AT ALL COST. This guy is absolutely brutal. Do not take his class. Every other philosophy teacher is normal and everyone gets a A. However, in this class,You sit around and listen to him talk about nonsense for an hour 15 STRAIGHT. If you glance at your phone or your computer you will be counted as an unexcused absence for the day
This professor is very nice and wants you to do well in his class. Only gives readings for homework and gives pop quizzes which are easy if you skim the readings. Strict grader but lets you rewrite papers. Attendance matters and participation is easy because he makes class engaging. Overall nice teacher, who cares about his students
He gets a lot of heat, but he is a good guy at heart. Cares about his students and occasionally lets rewrites happen. Philosophical conversations make for an interesting lecture. P.S If you bring him a pound of grass fed ground beef or a Firehouse Buffalo Chicken Sandwhich you get 3 full bonus points to your grade
Tough professor but engaging lectures. Attend class, complete readings, and utilize resources like Unstuck AI to succeed. Grading is strict but fair - put in the work and you'll learn a lot.
Took him for a summer course trying to get by with easy work, but NO. So many papers and writing assignments for each week. More papers than I wrote the entire year. Also does not accommodate or even seem remotely flexible to you. I do not recommend taking this class with this professor.
I took him over the summer to fulfill my philosophy requirement. I will be honest, it was brutal. For a class about introducing students to the subject of philosophy, he made me not want to touch the subject ever again. Just simply getting the papers done isn't enough for him. Take somebody else, it will save you hours of stress.
