I took him for both pols 206 and 207. I ONLY used the textbook to do the revel assignments. Yes, some people read it for class but I didn't. I went to every class and just took some solid notes. The only thing he does that makes me mad is that there would be stuff we didn't talk about (maybe in the book I didn't read) on the test. Would take him!
Smith is a funny guy but I had a hard time understanding his teaching style. His Powerpoints seemed to vaguely cover the topics/he spoke too fast & in a way that it was difficult to take quality notes. Tests weren't insanely hard but also were not easy due to the ambiguous wording of questions. Quizzes online required extensive reading. NOT easy A.
Took me all the way up until the last test to figure out how to study for this class. I tried just reading the text, studying lecture notes, looking over the review he gave, and I finally did my best on the test that I just memorized the review word for word on. Lectures can be irrelevant to the class and hard to understand. Unnecessarily difficult
Professor Smith was a great and funny prof, however your grade depends on 3 exams. He gives extra credit based on poor attendance (show up every friday). And what he lectures about makes up the bulk of the exams
Dr. Smith is a great POLS 206 professor. He gets off topic a lot but is also very funny and makes going to class enjoyable. Attendance is not necessary but gives extra credit to people that show up if less than half the class is there (happened 3 times for me). All homework and quizzes are online and they are due every few weeks. Tests are hard.
My favorite professor by far. He is passionate about what he teaches, which makes for a great learning environment. Textbook and lectures go hand-in-hand, but make sure you show up to all lectures because he likes to give extra credit every once in a while to those who show up to that lecture. I learned so much and enjoyed the class a lot.
One of my favorite professors at TAMU! He is a great lecturer and really cares about his students and what they will get out of the class. Make sure to go to class because he often gives random extra credit! Tests aren't hard if you keep up with lectures and do the review he gives out. Online book & homework required. Great class and prof!
Prof Smith is the best POLS prof I've had. Took POLS 207 during the spring semester and ended up dropping it because it was boring and felt like torture going to class. Retook it during summer 1 with Smith and I'm SO glad I did. Easy to understand, funny, cares about you understanding the concepts and not just giving you a ton of notes to memorize.
Great teacher. He uses a special lecture style that makes you so surprised by what he says that you remember everything without even trying. Going to class is worth it, and it is fun.
One of the best professors I have had, not just POLS. Talked with him before and after class several times. Not at all what you would think of a professor. If you just attend class, you will learn more than just class material. Must admit, as he does, that some lectures are preachy, but there are some good lessons. Take his class!
I have taken a lot of courses at A&M and it is not every day you meet a professor that cares this much about his students. He is a really great lecturer and is extremely fair in his tests and grading. I would recommend reading the textbook as well.
Show up for class and you'll pass. He's super funny and keeps class interesting. One of my favorite classes I took this semester.
Prof. Smith is my favorite professor and his class is the only one I enjoy going to. He makes lectures fun and interesting and gives extra credit for showing up to class. The tests are super easy, as well as online quizzes. It's an easy A class for sure. If you aren't that great at government, take his class. He'll make sure you understand it.
Smith was easily the best professor I've had. His lectures are full of jokes and fun to attend. I looked forward to his lectures. He not only does an amazing job of teaching the course material, but will give extra info about gov't in general which showed he really cared that we learn more than just what was on the test. 100% would take him again
Great lectures. The grade is based on 3 test and there is no outside work so if you miss lecture, you will miss material. Attendance is not mandatory but its the only way you get information so if you skip you will miss out.
only 3 grades are his 3 tests. no final. gives a review for each exam. lectures aren't too bad just gotta bare with him and his cheesy jokes.
I had professor smith for both POLS 206 and 207. This class as a whole does not require a whole lot of studying if you show up to class and pay attention. He is really funny to listen to which makes the class engaging. His test are similar to the review but don't simply rely on it for exams if you want an A. My favorite prof here at A&M by far
Kinda confused how people are saying the lectures matter. First exam I studied my lecture material along with the online quizzes and completely bombed-he just rambles about how much he hates taxes. Would definitely read the book if the lectures are not doing enough for you-raised my exam grade 20 points. He gives random extra credit for attendance
The grade is based only on three exams, but don't be discouraged to take his class. After all, he is really funny in class, which makes you remember the material. Gives reviews to help prep for the test. Extra credit is given if you show up to class on certain days so show up because there might be extra credit. No textbook so show up to lecture.
Jason Smith is the best POLS professor hands down. He's an awesome guy that makes class enjoyable and loves to crack jokes. He also just gives out random extra credit during class so actually show up if you want bonus points. Overall he's understanding, caring, and was a true joy to have. Plus there's no textbook, quizzes, or homework!
Jason Smith is one of the few professors where you'll actually look forward to their classes as a bit of a break where you can still learn but also be invested emotionally.
Great lecturer and really cares about the content he is teaching. 10/10 and would take again.
Jason Smith is an awesome prof. Super nice guy, doesn't want students to fail. If you want an A you need to show up to class and take good notes. Good notes includes the things that come out of his mouth that aren't on his slides. You will miss a lot of material if you only copy down lecture power points.
Took him for both POLS classes and he is by far my favorite prof. Graded only by 3 exams which are 50 multiple choice questions that come straight from the lecture. If attendance is especially low one day he will give extra credit to those who came. He weighs your best exam 40% of your grade and the other 2 are 30%.
Jason Smith is by far the most engaging professor I have ever had. Even though government is boring, he is not shy from making Bill Clinton jokes and going off on random tangents. Attendance isnt recorded but his tests are based off of things he says in class that are not on the power points. Tests are 30%, 30%, and 40% of your grade. TAKE HIM!!
Very funny guy. Your notes for the most part are the test, but he does tend to include some extra material that he did not cover. Still relatively easy and you should make an A. Also show up to class because he sometimes gives extra credit if you do.
Smith has hilarious lectures and students are only graded by 3 tests with no final. I would definitely advise going to class because you are tested over what he says in class. Great Prof, would take again for sure.
Smith was my absolute favorite professor the entire semester. I enjoy government, but even I get bored with it. Smith does an amazing job of making lectures engaging and interesting. No, you don't have to go to class, but you should. He gives test questions, bonus answers, and extra credit fairly regularly, so you're only hurting yourself.
Professor Smith is a funny man with a great passion for what he teaches. I never got bored in his class. However, you cannot afford to mess up on an exam because three exams determine your grade. His study guides help a lot for preparing for the exam so use it to your advantage! Be patient if you send him an email. He will take some time responding
Smith is awesome! Super funny and caring guy who really cares about his students. I made a C only because I did not put in any effort till the end and my first two test scores hurt me. However, I wish I had kept up with the readings and notes because I could have gotten a higher grade. Sends out a super helpful study guide before tests.
Take Jason Smith for POLS 206 & 207! He is super funny and super easy. 3 Tests only, no hw or textbook. You gotta show up to class to get your extra credit and listen to the lectures. He gives very good test reviews and the tests are word for word from the lectures. Super easy, fun, and entertaining do it !
Great prof. Super entertaining and has great lectures
This has been one of my favorite professors at Texas A&M (I am a junior now)! He cares a lot about his students and the material he is teaching. Overall, I missed class every now and then and still got an A. He is super understanding and wants to work with his students!
Very fun class. This professor LOVES government and was an amazing lecturer. Funny and sometimes goes on a tangent but helps to make sure you understand the material. Requires studying but is not difficult to succeed.
Aside from doing this class online, this class is a breeze. Prof. Smith's class is solely based on lectures, so you've gotta show up to pass the three tests he gives. Final is optional. Class is very straight forward, and nothing is too complicated. Just make sure you take notes. Bernie impersonation is hilarious.
Class is graded solely on 3 exams (& an optional final to replace your lower exam grade) and just the powerpoint slides WILL NOT SUFFICE, you need to go to class. Exams are super straight forward as long as you complete the study guide and attend class. Great and entertaining prof
The only class I actually looked forward going to, his lectures are so entertaining, you learn a lot from him from a class that's usually not that interesting! Tests are simple, based on his lectures so make sure to take notes! The take-home quizzes and revel assignments helps boost your grade up. Randomly gives EC if you're in class that day
Dr. Smith is a good lecturer and has lots of interesting things to talk about. He wants you to attend class which is why no textbook is required. As long as you pay attention in class and do his test reviews, you'll do great.
Professor Smith is great and really knows what he's talking about. It's a very easy class if you show up as well. If you don't show up it's not impossible, but just study a little harder. Only bad thing is he is VERY hard to reach out of class which can be annoying sometimes but if I did needed to talk to him I just did it in class and was good.
meaningful and enjoyable lectures, goes off on tangents sometimes but they are interesting. Definitely go to the lectures and take notes. Tests are doable, all multiple choice, and easy to get a B or higher if you study the review guide. Optional final. Revel assignments he assigns are annoying but he drops basically half of them.
Super great professor for TX gov! Attendance is not mandatory but his test are based off of his lectures and things that he says in class so it helps. You could probably get by with just the slides if you know your material. He wants to make sure that you know the material. Some times will go off on random tangents but overall hilarious professor!
Attendance is optional but if you don't go to class you're screwed because his lecture slides contain next to no info. His lectures are super informative anyways, so even if you're just getting a UCC out of the way you'll still learn a decent amount. Pretty funny guy, may come off as a jerk to some tho. Only grades are his 3 non cumulative tests.
TAKE HIM!! Non-mandatory attendance and he posts slides, but theyre brief bullets and there is no textbook. So go to class for content. Makes LOTS of dad jokes in class. He gives reviews before the exams & goes over them class before exam. Random extra credit for showing up. Only grades are 3 easy, non-cumulative exams. BAD at responding to emails!
Smith is a good and well respected Political Science teacher. 206 has an online textbook with lots of reading and quizzes. Three multiple choice tests. Smith is very funny and welcoming, he also makes the material easy to understand. However, he was often late and seemed apathetic towards his job as if he was simply checking off a box.
Smith is a good and well respected Political Science teacher. No textbook just lectures. Three multiple choice tests. Smith is very funny and welcoming, but it is hard to prepare for tests from just lectures. The reviews often had info I had never seen. He was often late and seemed apathetic towards his job as if he was simply checking off a box.
I enjoyed this class, though I have no interest in the subject. The test were worded weird so know your stuff. No textbook so show up to class to get study material. He does give extra credit, more like show up to class get a paper, and put your name on it. GO TO CLASS, funny passionate man. Better than I expected! He won't respond to emails!
There's a reason why his classes fill up so fast. He's an amazing prof that makes learning pols fun. I'd recommend you show up to class everyday, cause that's what a good aggie does, but mainly because sometimes he gives out extra credit.
I would definitely take Dr. Smith's class if you get a chance. His lectures were very interesting and his tests easy If you take notes from the lectures. There are 16 quizzes from the book but he takes the best 10 of them for your quiz grade worth 20 percent.
My favorite prof at A&M! His class was entertaining, but also informative. Gives extra credit for showing up on some days, especially days when class is going to be low (before breaks or long weekends). 10/10 would take again.
He's a great professor. The exams are heavily weighted, so prioritize them. He makes exam reviews for each test which are nice to use to prepare. 90% of the tested info is straight from the book.
super easy but he does NOT reply to emails. apparently he's going through some personal stuff right now so maybe that's why. only 3 tests and aren't proctored. weekly quizzes and discussions due every friday but doesn't take a lot of time to do. uploads lectures on canvas so you can watch whenever you want
BEWARE: If you actually want to learn anything, DONT TAKE HIS SECTION. He never answers emails. EVER. He goes off on unrelated tangents for the majority of class. We get through 3 slides at most. If you actually want to learn, take someone else.
Although he dosen't respond to emails, this class was EASY! He is a nice guy and seems passionate about teaching. The tests are not bad at all and the weekly quizzes are open note. There is not much work assigned and its easy to get an A.
The site is decently organized, but this professor does not ever get in contact with his students. He takes a long time to upload his lectures, and those lectures are part of the exams. Exams are from lectures and textbook. In one semester, he has gotten in contact (by email) with his students 3 or 4 times, and takes a very long time to respond.
Rarely contacts students. A lot of guessing when it comes to expectations but the class was easy anyway.
Took this as an online class, didn't even hear from him til the second week of class. If you're good at memorizing you'll be fine. Your grade comes from quizzes, exams, and discussions. Discussions were actually very interesting and help broaden your views. Only complaint is the prof was disorganized and didn't answer emails pretty much ever
I'm sure Professor Smith was a great professor pre-COVID & may be facing his own obstacles, but this class is a bit of a disaster in terms of your typical learning experience & teacher connection. Rarely emails/responds, (asynchronous) uploaded lectures *days* prior to his final test, but the class is an ez read. Take it if you can teach yourself.
Professor Smith is a great choice for POLS 206/207. For POLS 206, I had him in person. He was extremely engaging and I always learned something new. For POLS 207, this semester, it has been different. He didnt answer a bunch of emails, but this didnt make the class harder. The material is easy. Take him over other professors. They WILL be harder.
It's pretty clear that Dr. Smith was going through some stuff personally this semester, and while I don't blame him for it it had a marked effect on the quality of the course. He was exceedingly inaccessible and I found the course very dull and frustrating at times. Easy A, but a total slog to get through.
Throughout the entire semester Dr. Smith only communicated maybe 4 or 5 times. Though it was only known in the last week of class that he was dealing with health issues, Dr. Smith clearly did less than the minimum required of an educator. If you take POLS 207 online make sure to watch all the lecture videos at least 2 times through.
Smith is a great guy and seems to go through a lot of personal stuff which is sad but man this guy shouldn't be a professor. Never responds to emails, recorded lectures were from last semester, and opened tests late because he didn't have time. But the class itself was easy I just wish t he professor cared about his class.
The class itself wasn't very difficult, but Professor Smith wasn't very present. The quizzes were pretty easy, but they tended to focus on inane facts more than key concepts. It sucked that he told us he was pushing the last test (no final!) to finals week and then didn't tell us until a week later, but I guess he has a life too? Unimpressed.
I HATE THIS CLASS!!! I'm literally an engineering major who takes difficult classes all the time and this is by far the most difficult class I'm taking this semester. The tests have nothing to do with the reviews, and the lecture slides have near to no information. He doesn't record his lectures and is ALWAYS going off on tangents.
If you are in a major that requires a high GPA, don't take this class. I'm an engineering major that's typically pretty good at test-taking, and these tests are very hard to get an A on because they are unrelated to lectures (and a good portion isn't covered in the review either). This class will probably lower GPA.
Attendance at lecture wasn't mandatory, and it was mostly supplemental information not in the textbook. Prof. Smith only tested information in the book; as long as you do the required assignments and quizzes you can do good on tests. Very generous in the grades he takes and drops and expectations are the same each week.
He had really good reviews so thats why I took his pols 207 class but I basically had to teach myself everything, the quizzes and weekly assignments were easy but the exams were hard to get a good grade on
Don't even bother trying to contact this man. He absolutely will not respond. Still a fun class with easy assignments. Open book quizzes, so you shouldn't get anything less than an A on them. Just beware of the tests. Pay attention to lectures, study the reviews, and then cross your fingers. A's are possible with preparation, but don't expect a 100
Tests are proctored &only over lectures so take good notes and you will be fine for the test. Also has a test review. Goes off topic a lot during lectures but if he says something multiple times then it is important. The quizzes are only over the textbook, no time limit, and open book. Does not respond to any emails, slow grader, and disorganized.
Jason Smith is passionate and teaches you what you'll need to learn. Studying for tests is easy if you know where to look.
Professor Smith is my favorite professor at this school. He is passionate about what he teaches and makes assignments extremely doable. Just memorize the test review and you can make a solid B without even having to read the textbook. He is so funny and makes government fun.
If you plan on taking pols 207 as a knock off class, I would NOT recommend taking this class. The homework discussions and the open note quizzes are easy and straight forward. The exams on the other hand, are difficult and proctored so you must study for them to get a good grade. Rarely responds to any emails as well.
He was a lazy professor in my opinion. I studied the review and lecture slides hard and would still make B's on the tests because they were poorly worded and would put random things on the test that he didn't go over. He never responds to emails and also is very unorganized with grading.
I enjoyed Professor Smith! He's funny and loves what he is teaching. If you take notes on the lectures and pay attention to his quizzes you should pass with at least a B. Only thing is he is not good at responding to emails.
Do not take this class. Was rated high in the past but something must have happened because this class was horrible. Constantly would cancel class. Constantly had wrong answers for the quizes selected. There was no way to contact this guy so if you have an issue there is no way to fix it. Doesnt respond to emails and doesnt have office hours.
Professor Smith was going through it this semester, and therefore you'll get no responses to emails and class was cancelled quite a bit. Read the textbook for quizzes, pay close attention to his lectures to do well on the test. Make sure you understand both general and texas specific examples. If you actually listen to the lectures you'll be fine!
He often canceled class which I wasn't upset about but lost respect for him as a professor quickly. He grades everything in the student's favor, and grades each test so that your best grade weighs more than your worst. With this, his tests sometimes felt unfair. After studying, I would know an answer and it wouldn't appear to be a choice.
Professor Smith is an amazing professor, he makes the lectures as entertaining as possible. He also goes on rants during class which are quite fun to listen to. Very easy class to make a B in, but is going to take a lot of effort to make an A. Overall a great professor.
DO NOT TAKE PROFESSOR SMITH. 75% of our grade was based off 3 exams, which made it virtually impossible to get an A. He had us putting so much time into quizzes, readings & discussions for it to barely impact our grade. He cancelled class all the time, was unorganized, and very unprofessional in his lectures. Eventually I gave up and taught myself.
I took Prof. Smith for a summer class and it caused a lot of stress. He is very hard to get ahold of and takes at least 2 days to answer emails. His tests were challenging and had a lot more information then what was in the lectures. You NEED the text book. Tests were on lockdown and required a lot of studying.
Easy class, terrible prof. He NEVER responds to emails and admits to it. NEVER offered office hours, the syllabus said "TBA" for them all semester. Material is easy if he gives it to you. He opened a respondus proctored exam for 3 days (timed once opened) and posted an hour long lecture (1/4 of the exam material) the SECOND day the exam was open.
Great guy and pretty funny. He cares about his students, and gives them more than enough chances to help pass his class although he doesn't really do extra credit. Attendance isn't mandatory but mentions key things in his lectures that aren't on the slides and his reviews are some of the best study materials for exams.
Class is always entertaining with Smith, he is funny and goes on tangents but he truly wants all of his students to succeed.
Jason Smith is a great prof. His class is hard to get an A. Study the reviews because the tests are the strong majority of your grade. He is understanding and if you need help talk to him. He is all around a good prof and his class is and easy B. Take this prof. Study for tests
He goes on tangents like every class period but its amusing. He occasionally gives extra credit for the people who attend class. Tests are mainly off the reviews and homework. Good prof, doable class.
Dr. Smith is a pretty good lecturer, but he makes his exams harder than they should be, pretty hard to get an A even with a lot of studying. He is very hard to reach outside of class, and promised us extra credit he never gave. Took over a week to even post the syllabus. Graded on 3 exams and lots of quizzes and homework quizzes
10/10 professor, would highly recommend. Hilarious lectures that were always a pleasure to turn up to. Easy grader. We had 16 quizzes through the semester, all open note, and he dropped the lowest 6 of them. Very passionate about the subject and made sure to get concepts across instead of specifics. Posts reviews before tests that are very helpful.
He's a good professor. The quizzes are all open note w no time limit but the tests are pretty hard. He goes off on tangents like every class but its fine cause the material is kinda boring. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities that he adds to your highest test once the semester is over too.
Great prof with relatively easy work load. Goes on a lot of tangents, but they're usually really interesting and pertinent to the subject matter. Slow to respond over email, but really nice if you ask him questions after class.
Jason Smith is the GOAT. Dude is electric. If you enjoy government/politics/current events as a hobby, you will look forward to this class every day. His lectures are entertaining and very informative, the class is pretty easy, and you will learn a TON both about the government and the real world in general. I cannot recommend this guy enough.
Dr. Smith was a good professor. Lectures not required, but will probably score higher on tests if you go. Quizzes are freebies as they are open-note with multiple attempts. Tests are not too difficult. Guaranteed B if you put in a little studying, a little more work for an A. Overall, it shouldnt be too hard to get an A if you put in the effort.
I really enjoyed Dr Smiths class. His lectures were extremely interesting. You will need the textbook (its free online) and there is a fair amount of homework, but the format of it makes it so that youre studying for the exam by doing the homework. Not a blowoff, but not impossible. I have recommended him to several friends.
Dr. Smith knows that this class is mandatory and makes it as little of a pain as possible. With that said his lectures tend to be pretty interesting, albeit really tedious if you don't care about America politics or don't like really bad and repetitive dad jokes.
I really like Professor Smith. His lectures were really interesting and I enjoyed going to class. There weren't many assignments each week so tests weigh a lot in this class. Overall the class wasn't bad and definitely passable.
i think pols 207 is just an easy class, smith is very passionate about what he does but the lectures are boring and honestly not needed for the weekly quizzes and packbacks. tests are easy if you study and usually everything is online somewhere.
Honestly its a pretty easy course. Weekly pack back and quiz that don't take very long. The tests aren't bad as he puts out reviews for each one. As for the lower rating, it is almost impossible to reach him outside of class and sometimes he straight up just doesn't respond. Canvas/syllabus wasn't up until around 2-3 weeks after starting.
I would recommend Prof Smith to others. He has informative lectures and tries to make them entertaining for the students. He has easy open note textbook quizzes every week (mostly on Quizlet) and short weekly discussion posts as well. The only thing I would say is this class is very test heavy and there is minimal extra credit if any.
Professor Smith is a hilarious guy and knows what he is talking about. However, he does tend to wander from the lecture and talk about whatever much of the time. the weekly quizzes and packbacks are very easy. There are 3 tests and they are very difficult and are most of your grade. Go to class often and read the textbook and you'll be fine.
It can be hard to take notes during class due to the amount of tangents he goes on, so make sure to pay attention to the review sheets. The communication between Professor Smith and the students was lacking significantly, the syllabus wasn't even up for about the first week of the semester. Good class if you already know the content.
Participation wasn't necessary, but showed up anyway for amazing lectures. Grading policy very clear and beneficial to student. Absolutely hilarious guy, highly recommend hearing his rants.
Funny dude, class is entertaining. Grading policy is set up to only benefit the students. 89.5 is an A, so he indirectly curves grades.
I would recommend Smith for POLS. His class is easy to succeed in if you do all the quizzes (open note/book), pack back, and the reviews for the test. He does ramble about A&M sports in class but I did fine in the class so it was all good with me.
Government is boring, but Jason Smith makes the class so interesting. I've never had a more engaging professor, although his lectures can be boring sometimes, he is funny and caring. Very strict on grading criteria, but adheres to it. Would very recommend over the other professors.
Class is structured for you to succeed in. There were 16 assigned quizzes but you were only graded on your best 10. There were 14 packbacks but you were only graded on your best ten. He loves A&M sports and tended to go on tangents but attend lecture because it will help you on the exams. There is no final exam.
As long as you study several quizlets and the exam review prior to taking his exams, you should do well. There's also a discussion post due every week and quizzes but they're all open note. I stopped going to his class, but his lectures were engaging and he taught some useful stuff for the real world.
Smith gives weekly homework that is participation-based. He also gives open-note quizzes that come directly from the book. He gives reviews for the exams so they're easy as well if you study them. He does make tons of dad jokes and talks about sports during his lectures. Half the class even stopped showing up so it's not mandatory.
Professor Smith isn't my favorite person, but he's not a bad teacher. His lectures are easy to follow and helpful for the tests. The chapters we had to read were kind of long, but manageable. The tests were challenging. Overall not a terrible course but not great either.
Dr. Smith's hilarious, and could legit get a job in stand-up comedy. He often goes on tangents during lectures, but is very engaging, and made me fall in love with American politics despite not caring for it at all before. He tries his best to remain unbiased politically, and has us do weekly political discussions. Quizzes and tests are all online.
Took both POLS 206 and POLS 207 at the same time during Summer I session. He's difficult to get ahold of because he has a lot going on with family/COVID stuff, but overall was a good professor. He is understanding of issues and makes Texas and American politics fun to learn and accessible to those who previously couldn't care less about the subject
Professor Smith was absolutely terrible. DO NOT take his online course. He never responded to students. On test days he would not respond and we would be unable to take our tests. The tests use respondous lockdown and webcam. He would give us the review a day before tests, but the tests are SO hard because of tricky wording and the textbook is hard
Professor Smiths lectures are good (sometimes repetitive). However, the tests were difficult even if you do understand the course material. There were several times in class where he had a bad day and would waste time complaining about things not going his way. He never responds to emails and rarely responds to texts.
POLS 207 with Dr. Smith was a class with straightforward expectations that aren't hard to meet if you sit down once or twice a week and do the work. The only grades in the class were quizzes, tests, and packback(blog post once a week)
This professor was awful at communicating and gave no feedback whatsoever. The exams were always posted late and the review sheets and lectures were posted a couple days before the exam. The exams were not in union with one another, as in the format and the type of questions asked.
This reviews his online section, he might be an amazing professor for in person. He just had us read a textbook with tests every 1 1/2 weeks. 70% of grade is tests. For tests, he gave us a review 2-3 days before which somewhat helped. Tests were difficult and textbook based. I never communicated with him but people who did say he is terrible at it.
Dr. Smith was a great prof! He's funny and engaging in the classroom. Quizzes are open note, tests aren't that bad and he gives a review sheet. Weekly packback assignments, very easy. Really you just have to kind of pay attention to do well in the class, it's not hard. I'd recommend him for pols 207.
A good professor who knows and cares what he is talking about. there grade is mostly tests but as long as you put in enough time studying the review material and notes it should be easy.
Super funny and makes the class interesting but super hard to get ahold of outside of class and the quizzes are way harder than they should be. Use the study guides to study for the exams they are pretty close to what's on the exam
Professor Smith was amazing! I had him the Spring 2022 semester and he made me want to go to class even after working all morning. He isn't the best at technology but he will answer all the questions you have very well when you are in person. His lectures are very entertaining and important if you want to do well, so listen and take notes!
His lectures are engaging and he's extremely easy to understand. I recommend going to lectures even though attendance isn't mandatory because it makes studying 10x easier. Quizzes and discussions are free 100's, but your grade is very exam heavy. You will make an A if you know the study guides and fully understand the concept.
I had Professor Smith during summer session 2; it was a great experience! Everything he lectures is found in the textbook; he also goes on tangents but always ties back to what we learned. Some people didn't like his teaching style, but I thought it was intriguing. He is accommodating when you ask, and I would retake his class!
Pols should simply not be this hard. You have to go to class to take notes if you want to do well on exams. Exams are also really really hard. You have to take them in person on lockdown. Tests are worth a good percentage of your grade. You have to read the textbook as well which you have to pay 100 dollars for so have fun ;)
Professor Smith is great. The class in itself isn't hard. We have quizzes due weekly to make sure you are keeping up with the reading, weekly Packbacks, and core assignments later in the semester. Majority of your grade (75%) will be because of 3 exams, but as long as you study the study guides he provides, you should be fine. Take him!
I'm genuinely confused about how this guy has a 5. He's awful. Frequently late to class. Wastes the first 10 minutes of the lecture talking about whatever is making him upset for the day. Never responds to emails or texts. Has very little homework, but the tests are crazy hard, and use respondus lockdown browser. Take Chupp. DO NOT TAKE SMITH!!!
Professor Smith cares a lot about the subject and is funny. He gives extra credit often if you show up to class. Tests aren't too bad if you study. Recommend him!
I adored Professor Smith's lectures, even at 8 am. He is genuinely hilarious and wants his students to succeed, but it is necessary to attend class unless you read the textbook thoroughly. His tests are a bit hard, but completely worth it for a good professor with minimal homework!
The lectures are pretty pointless because he uses them to rant about his life. The reviews match the exam almost perfectly. But he refuses to answer his emails and during my semester than was an issue with duplicate questions on an exam and he did not give credit back. Hes terrible with technology but insists on only using it.
This class was more difficult than I had anticipated. Even if you do the test reviews, read the textbook, and go to lecture, the exams are difficult to get an A on. He is a nice guy who is passionate about government, his exams make this course harder than it should be. Unless you have a solid backbone in politics, this class will be hard.
Personally, I enjoyed this class. The tests are a mix of lectures and test reviews. He grades assignments late and goes off-topic. There is a weekly open-book quiz, pack-back, and a biweekly current events assignment. He drops 5 quizzes and pack-backs. Overall, I highly recommend this class, especially if you are someone who enjoys politics.
Everyone recommend Dr. Smith for Pols, but I did not enjoy his class. Gets off topic during lectures, and doesn't really cover what is on the exam. Weekly Packback is a waste of time, and core assignments were not opened until right before finals. He is funny and I ended up with an A (complete the exam study guides!), but not my favorite professor.
He was very funny in lectures but was often late in the beginning and took forever to get the canvas page up and running. That created a lack of care on my part as a student. Grades fairly but there really wasn't anything special about his class. I skipped this class more often than I skipped Roybler's 207 class a couple semesters ago...
Dr. Smith is hilarious! Be sure to take notes because some of the things he says are on the exams, the slides sometimes don't cover it. You'll need the textbook for the quizzes but they don't really translate to the exams, that's where the slides and study guides come in. He's a hilarious guy and truly passionate about the subject.
I went to every lecture and I did not think they were straightforward for testing material. I got a low B on all exams and somehow ended with an A- which I have no clue how that happened but thanks, Dr. Smith! But not a bad choice no hard or time-consuming assignments.
Smith is an excellent choice for POLS206! His lectures are engaging; make sure you take notes of everything, not just the slides. It's easy to maintain high scores on the REVELs, Packbacks, and take-home quizzes because he drops your lowest scores in each. The exams are very specific and can be tough, but I got B's on them and passed with an A!
Attendance wasn't mandatory so not alot of people went to class but the classes itself were fun and sometimes gave extra credit. The tests were tough if you didn't study so I advise using his reviews that he gives. All in all a great prof
Excellent grading system. Exams are non-cumulative and weighed according to performance. Drops 8/18 assignments and 2/7 take-home quizzes. Discussions have reasonable requirements. Those expecting email replies probably didn't read the syllabus. He prefers text messages and asks not to email him. Really easy if you go to class.
75% of your grade is made up by 3 exams, each weighted 30, 25, and 20%. 16 online quizzes, but he only takes your top 10 and they are open note and are 10% of your grade. Rambles during lectures and he cuts content from exams the week of because he takes too long. Lecture slides are posted but are garbage, use the textbook and exam review sheets.
Professor would often cancel classes for personal reasons or when there would be class he would talk about subjects that are not even related to the course content for half the time. His poor time management results in him assigning chapters to learn ourselves 2 days before exams.
He really cared about the material he was teaching and was very straight forward with what he expected. Show up to lecture and make it easier on yourself. Stay on top of the textbook work and quizzes, these notes are the best way to study for exams.
Great Professor. Very funny in class and the exams aren't too bad.
Can rant in his lectures and get off topic, but for the most part his lectures are funny and informational. Only takes top 10 quizzes and top 10 packbacks, so after week 10 you can stop doing them (they are easy). Exams aren't horrible, but not the easiest either. He is strict but willing to work with students as long as it's legit. Bad at emailing
I loved Dr. Smith, though I didn't attend many of his lectures since attendance isn't mandatory. He's hilarious, however, and does have some questions on the exams that rely on his lectures instead of the textbook. However, my grade didn't suffer for not going to class, but I also read the textbook and studied Quizlets. I'd definitely recommend it!
If he gets tired of teaching, may have a future in stand up comedy. Can get off topic in lectures and if that bothers you take someone else. Overall an effective teacher with clear expectations. Lots of participation stuff every week but overall not too much work. Quizzes are open note, tests are not. 3 tests, not crazy if you do the reviews
Would not take him, boring in class and rambles. Weekly quizzes, weekly short essays we call Packbacks, tests are mostly based off of lectures, and gets sensitive if someone leaves class early.
Smith rambles and gets off-topic constantly, so if that bothers you, I'd choose a different professor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but some of the things he says in lecture will be on the exam. The assignments are not time consuming, and I earned a B on every exam but still made an A in the class.
Dr. Smith is known for his off-topic lectures and funny commentary. It is unfortunate that most of the time the things he said had nothing to do with the tests. Attendance is not mandatory, so if you are self-sufficient, this class should be easy. The only thing is the tests can sometimes be difficult and throw you for a loop but can make an A.
Tries to make the class practical. His lectures are fun. Exam difficulty is moderate.
Prof Smith is a nice guy and his class was relatively easy, however, you do get a lot of what seems like busy work. His tests are weighted to where the one you score the best on holds the highest percentage and vise vera, which is nice. He is kind of tough to reach outside of class, but there isn't much that you would need to do that for.
Dr Smith's class was not very difficult, and incorporated a lot of quick extra credit opportunities. Even with the class being required by the school, Dr Smith did show passion in political science making it interesting and informative. He was overall a good professor, although there were numerous problems on the administrative side of things.
He will go off on like 7 tangents in class, but his lectures are still funny and interesting. Super chill and just wants you to vote and be informed. Assignments are very straight forward and quick to do, and his lectures actually got me interested in my local government!
Took him in the spring semester but he was so easy and such a great professor.
His class is very skippable and although he just rambles off topic its at least kinda of amusing. The exams are kinda stressful lowkey theres some weird questions thrown in there.
He is definitely one of the funniest profs I've had, but it is sometimes difficult to keep up with in class because of the many tangents he goes on. While it's not necessary to read the text book I'd definitely recommend it because he does not go over everything in class that is on the test. This class is super exam heavy.
this was very simple course. just go to class pay attention and you will be fine. i never opened my textbook once and i only did his exam review sheets a hour before the exam and got a B+ every-time. i finished with a A bc of the discussion post and the chapter quizzes.
Didn't go to the lecture. Exams are straightforward and come slightly from the slides and the majority from the reviews. He had no downsides whatsoever and was probably my most chill professor in terms of work. Would retake him 30 times if I had the choice.
Smith was a really good professor who enjoys teaching. He is really funny during his lectures. Only thing I recommend is reading the book as his test and quizzes follow majority of what the book teaches. I also recommend doing the study guide as the will really prepare you well for the test. 100% recommend this professor.
Nice professor, but do not take him for an online course. He offered little to no instruction. He wouldn't tell us when exams were. He was also very hard to get a response from. I had to contact him 4 times before I received a response.
He was great!! He is a great lecturer who truly has a gift for humor. This class is based on 3 tests, weekly PackBacks, and a weekly quiz that comes word-for-word from the online textbook. Attendance is not mandatory but suggested if you want to do well on tests. I would totally take Jason Smith again!!
Although very disorganized, Dr. Smith's class was enjoyable. If you're just there to learn POLS and don't care about his life, stay away. Attendance is not mandatory but some small random details from class would show up on the exams. Weekly quizzes (when he remembers to upload them) straight from the textbook and open note along with 10 packbacks.
His coursework and load were very easy to get through and finish but he is awful at responding to emails or through canvas. He genuinely wants you to succeed however and does eventually get back to you. His assignments were simple and detailed. There were several attempts to get a high grade and he offered to shave low scores at the end.
Dr. Smith is a great prof, and his lectures are pretty engaging. He's a funny guy, but he goes on a lot of tangents. While you may not need to read the textbook in depth to do well on exams, you should definitely skim it. While there is no attendance, you should go to class as his slides are pretty bare and he elaborates a lot of them. Easy class!
Prof Smith was great. I took POLS206 online. You have to pay attention to the lectures and study to do well on the exams as they are lockdown with webcam. Overall, the course was easy. Made up of packbakcs, REVEL assignments, quizzes, 3 core assignments and 3 tests. Easy class as long as you engage a little. Text hime if you need him!
Professor Smith was an amazing teacher! Class attendance is not mandatory, however, I would suggest you go (as he discusses what might be good to know for exams sometimes). The test reviews are about 70% of the exam, so I'd suggest you do those and memorize them. The packbacks and quizzes on canvas are fairly easy and open book/notes.
Not sure if the honors class differs but he is not well organized at all. Slides are very bare and he often goes on tangents unrelated to content. Super exam heavy and questions are sometimes poorly worded or trick questions. Never responds to emails or his text messaging service either (that was put in place because he doesn't answer emails).
He was a great professor. He is very funny, did amazing impressions of politicians, and made fun of himself constantly to keep class entertaining even though it is a boring subject. He kept your top 10 out of 16 chapter quizzes and discussions. He offered extra credit for showing up to class. His exams are easy and his study guides are great.
Chill guy who tells you right away that you can skip his class. Tests take up a very large percentage in this class so study for those but the rest is really easy. All quizzes are open book/note and a majority are straight from the textbook nearly word for word. There are weekly discussions to post to but those can be finished really fast as well.
Always trying to be funny, I personally don't find him funny. His lectures always turn into tangents, and his "slides" are bare. He doesn't really have a concise train of thought. He is also very hard to get a hold of outside of class, emailed multiple times about my work and have been ignored. He is overall a nice guy, but doesn't really teach.
tests were actually pretty difficult, especially the final. the "reviews" he gives don't really cover anything on the test. lectures always turn into tangents about irrelevant things, and is always trying to make jokes. He set up a phone number that he said was easier for him to respond to, but never responded.Reached out multiple times, no answer.
Great professor! He procrastinates a lot, but his tests are pretty straightforward if you do the review sheets. He is very funny and caring.
He is very unorganized and sometimes lectures are not productive at all, but he makes exams easy and provides extra credit throughout the semester. The only thing bad about his class is packback because it is just another thing to buy so he does not have to grade, but he is a good professor and cares about students and this school.
I've heard he's great in person, but he was not present for my online class. The work load was minimal, but the grades were very exam heavy. He maybe sent out 2 emails the entire semester and I've emailed him a couple of times but received no response. The class itself was not super difficult though.
Attendance not mandatory, so rarely went to the lectures. Would barely go over content in class. Funny guy but mainly goes over current events. Insanely test-heavy. I'd study for his exams and still get a C because it's difficult to know what content will be covered. Packback was annoying because it'd take ages. Quiz questions are from textbook.
Rude professor; his lectures are a waste of time. He goes off-topic a lot and talks about his personal life a lot. He makes the exams easy.
Extremely test heavy, does not teach content at all and rambles. Test distribution goes Highest Exam 30%, Median Exam 25%, Lowest Exam 20% and the rest of your grade is quizzes (15%) and packbacks (10%). No final but that doesn't make up for the insane test weight. Apparently gives extra credit to those who come to class.
He rambles a lot in his lectures, but he is so funny. The tests were basically the study guides. I went to SI sessions before the exams and the SI leaders really helped me fill out the study guide.
The most unhinged man I've ever met. He goes off on the most random tangents in class, and I loved it. Despite never being able to get through more than three slides, I learned a lot. Study for exams early on, they are tougher than you think but he weights the ones you did better on higher.
A bit of a yapper in his lectures but attendance is not mandatory. I stopped going after a while and still passed the class with a B. Homework is very easy (quizzes are found online and in the textbook). The exam review is at least 70% the test. Would take again...
He is a hilarious professor who knows how to keep attention in an overall boring political science class. Is not biased to any party at all, super easy homework assignments and weekly quizzes that you need to read the textbook for. If you do all that plus his review sheets before an exam you should get an easy B+ or better. Great Professor and easy
He's an icon.
Dr. Smith's lectures are important to attend, as he will often lecture for a whole block on one slide with like 10 words on it. He will say everything that you need to know. He will get political in class, but its a political science course so obviously that will happen. The work load is reasonable and Dr. Smith helps make the class interesting.
There's one quiz and a packback a week. Attendance is not necessary at all just study the test review he gives.
He is super pedantic on the quizzes and exams. Some questions are phrased in an ambiguous way that makes it impossible to determine the correct answer. Also, he is unresponsive in the GroupMe that he created. There is a weekly Packback writing assignment that serves to waste your time and $40. He does drop some of the quizzes and Packbacks, though.
Goat. Go to class and get an A bruh
Professor Smith is my favorite teacher I've had at A&M. He makes his lectures interesting and relatable to keep students engaged. Attendance isn't mandatory, however, attending lectures makes the exams a lot easier if you take good notes.
lectures were not productive because he uses them to go on tangents and talk about stuff that was not content related, doesn't post slides on canvas until after they are discussed in class which makes it hard to follow along. Test are inconsistent with material and wording on them is confusing. Test are 75% of course grade- would not take him again
This class is really easy if you just go to lectures.
You definitely have to go to class, even though attendance isn't mandatory. This class is test heavy. Some of the test questions are definitions/pretty straightforward, but for the rest you definitely need to apply stuff from the textbooks and lectures. You're definitely not going to get the TEST questions from quizlet, but not too bad.
Packback discussions, Chapter quiz, and tests are what make up your grade. Smith gives a study guide for each test and if you thoroughly fill it out and study it you should make an 80+ on every exam. He does go on tangents and his lecture is not mandatory but I feel like it helps to go for some of the test material. Rarely gives extra credit.
Maybe the GOAT of the POLS department. His lectures were as hilarious as they were genuinely educational. Definitely would recommend.
Over all prof Smith was very good. I enjoyed my time in class as he made it a fun environment to learn in. While there are a lot of assignments to help balance out your grade, doing well on the exams is crucial to doing well in the class. I found the final to be the most difficult as it didn't seem to relate to the other two tests and very tedious
Definitely go to class. He has dad humor, which kept class interesting. I found that the tests were a lot harder than what was on the study guides and it's hard to make an A on them. Quiz answers in textbook and drops some of those and packbacks. He definitely made the class more enjoyable but was still hard to follow his lectures sometimes.
Most of the exams can be self-studied through Quizlets and the review he leaves. Although I got a B and did not attend class, most of his lectures are tangents and he does not go over the material well. He offers 1 extra credit opportunity and exams and quizzes are factored heavily in your grade. Would recommend other professors.
Dr. Smith was a super funny guy and his class was not too hard. 3 exams, no final, and 16 or so chapter quizzes, and he only takes the 10 highest. Lectures kinda matter, since he doesn't post the content anywhere else, and the tests can be kind of difficult just depending on how much you are reading the textbook and going to class.
Extremely heavy weighted exams with the most random questions. Filled out the study guide for each exam, read the textbook, used quizlets to study, and STILL wouldn't be fully prepared cause some stuff wasn't on any of those. This class was harder than my OCHEM classes because of how random the exam questions were, and I got A's in both of those.
Took him for POLS 207, funniest man alive, but I could not understand his tests. Studied more for his final than my 2 400 level math classes combined and barely scraped by with an A in the class. Still the most interesting professor I have ever taken.
Dr. Smith is easily the funniest prof I've had so far at TAMU, lectures are entertaining for a subject I don't enjoy all that much. Tests can be difficult if you don't pay attention or attend lectures, so I highly recommend you attend his lectures and take notes! Overall, Dr. Smith made a boring class fun, and I would highly recommend you take him!
He really doesn't go on as many tangents during lectures as people say (At least not that I could tell). Dad humor, encourages you to go make informed votes, gives you 80% of the exam in lecture and other 20% in textbook readings. Also gives a study guide for each test. Weighted exams (best exam worth most). No cumulative final.
He does a good job of covering the content that will be on exams. Attendance is not mandatory, but in class he mentions things that will be on exams, so going will help a lot. He posts lecture slides but they are more of just an outline for what he will talk about, not details of what you need to know.
Awesome professor made a boring class so much better and as long as you go to lectures you'll know what you need for the test.
Professor Smith is funny in his many rants during lecture, but takes a long time to get to the info that will be on tests. The exam reviews are most of the content on exams. Extra credit is given the day before every exam. Most of your grade comes from the exams, and he drops a couple of quiz grades.
Was a great and funny professor. Learned a lot.
best prof!
This class is so free. I love his lectures and how he goes off on engaging side tangents. Biggest advice is study for test a week in advance, read the textbook, and look over quiz questions before the test. I've heard horror stories from my peers about their POLS 207 profs(do NOT take dyer), and I get to sit comfy knowing my prof is great.
He talks alot and goes off topic, but generally pretty good, dad jokes kinda guy.
Very easy- discussions, quizzes, and exams make up the whole grade. 4 discussions get dropped and 4 quizzes get dropped, as well as the exams being weighted by how well you did on them. Lectures are not mandatory to attend and you could easily get an A by doing the review sheets sent out before exams and finding quizlets covering course material.
Solid professor and is always straight to the point. His grading criteria is clear and as long as you do the homework and the quizzes you're chilling. Would highly recommend taking his class if you can.
This professor made the class easy and straight forward. He wrote his own textbook which is concise and actually helpful. Lecture attendance is not mandatory but he's pretty funny. The exams are pretty easy as long as you read and do the practice quizzes. The rest of your grade comes from packbacks.
Good lecturer with dad jokes. Keeps things interesting in a pretty boring subject. Interesting but fair grading criteria. Overall good class and probably the best political science prof on campus.
Overall, he's a good professor. His lectures are engaging, and his exams are manageable as long as you study. Most of the questions come from quizzes and his exam review. His workload is also pretty manageable for my semester breakdown: one discussion question a week, three ten-question quizzes due before exams, and three exams with no final. 9/10
Jason smith is a very good professor. He does tend to go off topic at least once every lecture, but I would say that I learned a lot regardless. The textbook used is very straight forward and so are the test reviews. If you read the textbook and do the test reviews, you'll do well in the class.
Great Professor!
Very easy to do well in this class. Your whole grade is 10 packbacks, 5 quizzes, and 3 exams. Quizzes are open note and open internet. He wrote the textbook, and it's short and directly teaches to the exam. Attendance is not mandatory but show up anyway, he explains things more in depth in class. He makes dad jokes and goes on funny tangents too.
Choose Dr. Smith over anyone for 207. Attendance isn't mandatory but he's a great lecturer. Only highest 5/9 quiz scores are counted (15%), 10/15 for weekly PackBack discussions (10%), & higher exam scores of the 3 are given more weight (30%, 25%, 20%). Quiz questions are identical to those on exams. Super manageable workload. GroupMe for prof Qs.
If you're taking 207, you need to take Smith. Easiest class I've ever taken - an A is extremely achievable if you just read the textbook and do the packback assignments. Basically all the quiz material comes from the textbook, and the tests are very easy as well.
Told me I couldn't retake a test when I had to take an emergency call from my spouse. Hilarious but never on topic. Don't bother going to lectures. We talked about BBQ for two hours. Just read the book and look up the quizlets and you'll pass.
Attendance is not mandatory, and all exam questions are taken from the textbook. The class is easy if you study for it. Lectures are not super useful for the exams as he tends to get distracted and go on tangents.
His lectures are very interesting, but you can skip and easily get an A. He wrote the textbook which makes the tests extremely easy and you can get an A with 45 mins of studying. The grades work like this: Discussion posts: 10% of grade, Quizzes: 15% of grade: 3x 50 questions MC Tests (highest counts 30%, then 25%, then 20% respectively).
It's a pretty stress-free class. Smith has interesting/funny lectures and it makes learning fun, but you don't need to attend to get an A. Just do the test reviews, quizzes, and read the textbook to do well on the exams. Quizzes are super helpful since the questions are reused for the exam. You may only need to study a day before and you'll be fine
Quizzes are on your own time and open-note. His exam review sheets and quiz questions are very similar to exam content. I actually looked forward to his lectures as they were engaging and explained concepts well. Didn't show bias towards any political affiliation and just encouraged political participation. Would take another class with him!
Very engaging lectures, had a weekly pack back, on your own time quizzes, and 3 Exams. He was super funny and gave many real life examples that were related to lecture to help you understand. For a political class, he was non-partisan and really just urged for students to participate in politics regardless of your party. Would take again.
Dude is hilarious, I actively looked forward to his lectures. 207 with Smith is light, do the weekly Packbacks, the pre-exam review sheets, and the open online quizzes to get an easy A. The class itself is mildly disorganized (never held office hours, the textbook was released late, etc.), which is the only reason I don't have him as a 5.
Professor Smith made POLS 207 a breeze. Attendance is not mandatory, so I never showed up and still got an A. Earlier in the semester I went to a couple lectures, but they weren't helpful, so I stopped going. Just make sure you read the textbook that he provides, complete all the quizzes & discussions, and it's an easy A.
First off, this class is very, very easy if you've taken AP Gov in high school. So easy you don't even really have to show up (I didn't most of the time). His grading criteria are super clear, the exams are the biggest component, but he tends to reuse questions from the quizzes he gives, which are all open book, open note, online, and un-proctored.
He will likely become one of your favorite professors if you take him for any class. His lectures are entertaining, consisting of lots of jokes that'll make you laugh. The lectures are also very informative, and he is knows the topics well. Getting an A in this class is very easy if you just take the time to read the textbook before each test.
not many assignments. Only 3 tests that were kind of challenging. You have to read the textbook to do well. He was not super easy to reach outside of the classroom. Pretty lecture heavy; just do not miss the important stuff he mentions in class. Not many extra credit opportunities.
Very energetic during lectures, definetly memorable
You have to show up to class as exams are sometimes of minute details that he shares. Overall really easy and the third exam was online but not in the classroom. Class was literally three exams and packback.
Attendance is not needed at all but I recommend going. do well on the first two tests so you do not have to stress on the third. great teacher
I always knew I would get a laugh in his class. He posts his slides, but he gives most of the information about his slides in the lecture. So up to you to go to lec. Read the chapters from his textbook and study the quizzes that correspond to the exam and you will get an A! Some extra credit. Super easy class, fun teacher, light work, TAKE HIM!
Professor Smith's class is very easy and does not require attendance. There are weekly discussion posts but you only have to do 10/15 to get full credit. Additionally, there are monthly online quizzes which are all based off the textbook and slides. I would still recommend going as 20%of his exams are lecture-exclusive material. Funny guy though!
He yaps a lot during his lectures but explains the content really well. His lectures and the online quizzes prep you pretty well for the tests.
Professor Smith is awesome! He understands this is a required course and doesn't try to trick you. Not too much homework, and he provides study guides that help with the exams. Professor Smith has a good sense of humor and often goes on random rants in class, which can be funny. Take him!
Honestly I wasnt sure what to expect with this class before taking it, but it was extremely easy. If you look at the study guide before the exam, you will do well. He has packbacks where you just need to reach a small threshold to get credit and some online, open-note quizzes. He also drops some of them. Just take him for this class!
Incredibly easy class. Quizzes and tests are a breeze and make up the majority of your grade, with drops. Homework is also super light. Lectures are also pretty funny, can't really think of anything bad to say about this prof.
Funny lectures, incredibly easy class. Exams were closed book, but still very easy if you go to lecture or read the textbook. If you want a true blow off class, Chupp does take home open note exams, but Dr. Smith is still a great prof.
He's a funny professor who genuinely cares about sharing his knowledge! There's no attendance policy, but the lectures are still pretty insightful and worth going to. Not much homework. The exams are also pretty easy as long as you do the practice quizzes beforehand, cause most of the exam questions are pulled from the quizzes.
The best and probably the funniest professor at TAMU. Easy class, gives exam reviews, no attendance, and is HILARIOUS! Take him!!!!!
It was okay. Kind of an overrated professor in my opinion . The tests will drag you down so however much someone tells you you need to study, study twice as much. I got away barely with 10 hours. Dont listen to prof all the tests and quizzes are based off textbook so you dont need to go to class but it is helpful. Hes funny.
Chill prof. Talks about whatever he wants to. Exams were mostly chill all multiple choice. Final was non cumulative. Study the quizzes and study guide he gives you. One of the better POLS professors. Gave random extra credit for being in class when no one else was!!
I didn't go to class for 3/4 of the semester and got an A. Pretty straightforward stuff. Take Prof. Smith if you can.
He was a good professor but he would get easily distracted during lectures. We would stay on track for a while and then he would go on a tangent and then we would get back on track. It was hard to focus in his class but his packbacks and quizzes weren't hard and the exams were fair.
I liked professor smith a lot. I didn't attend class often but when I did it was always an enjoyable experienced. He's pretty unbiased I'd say and he's hilarious when he goes on his rants. I honestly wish I went to class more.
great professor, the best for this course.
chill class, take it along with hard classes so you have breathing room. prof was very funny as well
Professor Smith was the best professor I had in my entire college career. Funny, entertaining, and brilliant at his craft. I loved his lectures and conversations with him. Took two classes with him and I could take more.
I love Professor Smith. He is a really nice guy and is really funny. Do your work and study the material and it will be an easy class. Lectures are not mandatory but go anyway to learn the material the best. Would definitely take him again.
Smith's POLS207 class is easy if you study for the exams by reading the textbook and doing quizlets. I didn't go to a single lecture and got an A perfectly fine. Seemed like a funny guy during the first day of class and a good lecturer. Class isn't difficult if you put effort in. Lockdown browser exams.
He doesn't do office hours or email, so if that's a necessity don't take him. If you go to class he's an awesome guy to listen to, but you can also just read the textbook and do well also. Exams are in person, the last one is at home with webcam. Definitely need to study though.
Good prof, funny guy in lectures. Some exam questions can be tough though.
Tests are super easy. Roughly half of the questions are straight from the (online) quizzes. First 2 exams are in person but last exam is online and can be taken wherever. Attendance is not mandatory BUT if you want a decent grade either show up to lectures or read the book.
Most of the exams in this class are based on the textbook and quiz content, so you can pretty much guarantee an A in this class if you just read the textbook, which is not very long. The only class I attended (outside of exams) was the syllabus class, and I scored highly with minimal effort. Exams control most of the grade, but it's very easy.
He's ok the final is all proctored and the first 2 exams are in person wish Texas anm made this class all online
Dr. Smith is a great professor who cares about his students. I made the mistake of slacking off and it bit me in the butt and I finished with a B in the class. He has no attendance policy, but exams are in person with lockdown browser. If you actually put effort an A is very attainable. His reviews are great and he removes a LOT of grades to help.
Never paid attention in lecture and breezed through the exams. Read the textbook and do the chapter quizzes and you're good. Packback discussions every week are graded by AI and they only take a few minutes each week for me. Only the top 10 of 14 discussion grades and top 5 of 8 quiz grades are included. Final exam is take-home online.
He is really funny, lectures are always pretty interesting and even though he has no attendance policy you should show up bc its a slippery slope but also he gives reviews before exams and will sometimes take questions straight from the quiz (he also has his own textbook) exams use lockdown but again they arent too bad and packbacks are light work
Dr. Smith is the GOAT!!! 100% take him if you can. If you read the textbook before the exam that's a guaranteed A. Besides exams the only assessments are these super easy online quizzes and packback (takes like 20 min to do). Dr. Smith gives rlly good lectures and he truly cares abt teaching. 10/10 PROF!!!
Pretty much exactly what you want out of a required class like this. He explicitly said at the start that he wanted to make it easy for the students and did for the most part. Is pretty fun and tries to be engaging but the problem is a lot of the material covered in class doesn't even show up on the exam
Literally take him if you can. Great professor and makes the class super easy. Even if you don't show up to lecture you can just read the textbook and get an A on the exam. 3 exams, like 9 chapter quizzes, and weekly discussion posts. Very manageable and not really that time consuming. This class has never stressed me out either.
He is super straight forward on what is expected from this class. Weekly discussions, 10 quizzes, and 3 exams are the only assignments, which is a lot less compared to others. The tests are usually 80-90% of the review, and the rest is from text book. Dude can be an oddball at times, but overall super chill teacher and one of my easiest classes.
Rambunctious and flowing with edgy jokes to separate himself from other professors. Calling him "chill" would be inaccurate. He stays on topic perhaps only half of the time, but only because he strongly believes POLS 207 is an easy, straightforward course that you can succeed in by attending class. I don't know anyone who disagrees.
This professor is the best 207 professor TAMU has to offer. His lectures are enjoyable, although he can get off track at times. The reviews are pretty straightforward, but a lot of the stuff in lecture isn't on the exams. The best thing is he has 3 exams and your best score is weighted the most. I would take him again if I had to.
Super easy class. Never went to class since it wasn't mandatory, just read the textbook and used his reviews to study and did well. Lowest exam is weighted the least in your average and highest exam is weighted the most. Though it seems easy, don't underestimate that you have to read!
Although attendance is not mandatory, I recommend going to class! His lectures are very entertaining, and he will give information that could be on the tests. For exams, read the slides and complete the review that he gives you. Also, his quizzes before exams are GREAT review questions! I highly recommend his class!
Easy guy, he doesn't beat around the bush and tells you what you really need to know. Class is very exam-heavy, but I could study the day of and get an A on the exam once I knew what to study for and what his exams were like. Easy grade credits from homework, not a hard class at all. Sometimes he goes on tangents but I didn't mind it, he was funny.
HE IS SO FUNNY! This class is so easy. Yes, you have to study. He gives reviews for the exams and let us take them at home with a lockdown browser!
Professor Smith's lectures are super funny and entertaining! Attendance is not mandatory, but exam questions may stem from the lecture. He is very direct on what is important for exam, and he explains concepts in an engaging, clear manner. The summer course is super chill, 1000/10 would recommend over fall/spring course. *YOU STILL NEED TO READ!!!*
As long as you pay attention to his lectures and do the review sheets he has for the exam, it's an easy A. Do the discussion posts and the chapter quizzes, you will be good. He does go off in tangents, but it doesn't impact the class.
Unprepared and utterly inaccessible outside of class. Didn't cover a whole chapter of content that will be on the exam, said he would post a recording of the lecture, and has yet to post it as of 6pm the night before. This is the incredibly frustrating considering that he makes a point of saying that teaching is his only job.
Although he tends to get sidetracked during lectures, he is overall a good teacher. Gives easy to understand examples to understand terms along with an engaging class that helps you memorize the curriculum.
Really good professor all around. Highly recommend as he is super funny and his grades are very fair. Also he won't randomly accuse you of academic dishonesty so that's good lol.
He was an amazing professor! I was not expecting much because many of the pols professors at Texas A&M are biased, but he was great. He taught the class almost like a history class so that we understood why our politics were in place. He was very accessible to talk to and ask question to. He loved to play Bob Ross videos before class.
Dr.Smith is extremely educated when it comes to the subjects he teaches. Especially considering that he consistently refrains from bias between either major political party. He does get side tracked at times, (which made his class a bit boring but I digress.) As long as you study the textbook + chapter quizzes, you'll end his class with an A.
Professor Smith was great! As long as you do the work, you will get a good grade. This was an 8-week course with two exams and a final. All exams were open note. His lectures are easy to follow, but you have to show up to know what content is on the exams. There is a lot of work on eCampus, but he drops a lot of grades/you don't have to do it all.
Amazing prof. Easiest class ever. Genuinely haven't gone to class since syllabus week aside from exams. Exams are absurdly easy and I barely studied. Never need the textbook either.
Prof. Smith is very passionate and knowledgeable about political science. It took me after the first exam to realize you can't just study his lecture slides; you need to take notes of his lecture. His lectures have a lot of content that will be on the exam, so be prepared.
Prof Smith is super chill. I never go to class and purely study based off of the quizzes and textbook (which is so short you could read the whole thing in 4 hours) and Ive made A's or B's on his exams. He weights the class in your favor. You can cram for the test a day before and still do well !! Take his class!!
He was really knowledgeable, and I feel like I actually learned a lot in this class. Its 3 tests all very manageable if you study. He gives other pack backs and quizzes that help your grade. He wants you to do well and you don't have to come to lectures but they help so much, and he will give extra credit if it's a day a lot of people will skip.
Very funny guy and really cares about his students. Class has 3 exams, weekly packbacks, and chapter quizzes that have to be done through the textbook. Your grade is hidden through the semester but he provides a grade calculator. Reviews for each test are super helpful. Last exam is the final, not cumulative and taken at home with lockdown browser
Funny guy, decent lectures. Pretty light on homework, and a lot of test questions are pulled straight from the textbook.
He is super laid back, however very knowledgeable about the topics on hand. If you get the chance to take him, take him, it is a pretty free A as long as you are competent, and especially if you have background knowledge in AP Gov.
Such a great prof, he rambles a lot but honestly even though attendance is never mandatory, most people show up every class just because of how chill he is. If you can, get in his class for sure. Light studying for the exams will take you a long way, the exams are almost entirely questions you previously saw in class.
I think he is very funny but sometimes his rants kind of makes the idea he teaches come across a bit confusing. But overall I think he is a pretty chill and funny professor although there are days where he is not so chill so beware of those!
Great guy. Easy tests. Free A. Attendance optional. Lectures were pointless as all you needed to do was read the textbook chapters for that respective test the day before. He is clearly informed about political science (smart guy). No homework but chapters quizzes that are online and they are easy. Questions on the chapter quizzes appear again.
Dr. Smith clearly loves what he teaches and what he does. Going to class with him as your professor will not disappoint. He tells plenty of jokes and he explains things specifically with examples. The only homework is a discussion post every week and chapter quizzes due just before the exam. I highly recommend POLS 207 with Dr. Smith.
Enjoyed this class. His anecdotes that tie back to the topic make the content easier to understand. He clearly really enjoys teaching this class and has a lot of knowledge about state and local politics. Definitely take 207 with him if you have the chance to. It's nice for a university requirement class to be enjoyable.
Take him. Attendance not mandatory, but you will want to be there. He explains concepts well and makes class very fun. Grades are free and he gives you extra credit just for showing up to lecture if it's the last day before every break.
Smith is a good prof! I'm not a fan of pols and found the lecture materials to be boring, but Smith is funny and made the class more enjoyable. There are weekly Packbacks and a few chapter quizzes due before each exam. Honestly, I thought the exams were pretty hard, but I somehow managed to get by. Study the exam reviews! Would recommend Smith!
Fire prof, definitely one of the best POLS 207 professors to have. Probably went to about 30% of the lectures and paid attention for 0% and I'm sitting comfortably at a A high. Exams were straightforward - if you do the exam review he provides with the intent to learn (and the chapter quizzes) before every exam, you'll be chilling.
Pols 207 is an easy A if you just pay attention and study the night before the test. The tests are all non-cumulative and are 50 MCQs, the weekly packback discussion board posts are auto-graded and are easy 100's if you do them, and the chapter quizzes that are online are open-note. Also he occasionally gives bonus points for showing up.
3 non-cumulative exams, with one of them being online. 10 online quizzes that are easy. Weekly discussion posts. He drops like 2 quizzes and 2 discussions. Got an A with minimal studying, fun fact: He committed tax evasion.
really funny guy most quiz questions are on exam, studied the day before and easy A. he gives a couple of bonus points on exam on low attendance days, his slides are sometimes empty since he expects you to show up, sometimes exams ask for particular things he says in class, you can work on other stuff in class just half pay attention
Top 3 professors I've taken in college so far. Grading criteria is extremely lenient, with your higher scoring tests counting for more, and over 1/3rd of homework's and quizzes being dropped. His lectures are the best I've ever had and it is the only class I ever felt bad about skipping because they were so interesting. Take Jason Smith if you can!
This was the easiest class ever. Attendance is not mandatory, but I went to every lecture because of how much fun they were. 9 online quizzes, 15 packbacks, 3 exams. Drops 2 lowest quizzes, and 2 lowest packbacks. Highest exam weighed heaviest. Extra credit on random days. Fun tangents/jokes throughout lecture great class 10/10
10/10 would take again. He doesn't gaf about his students which is great, and attendence not mandatory. All exams are lightwork, and the final is online. I went to every class anyways since I liked his lectures even though he would go on tangents. Sometimes gives bonus points to the people who show up on days before break.
This professor was amazing. He knows what he's talking about, is funny, and wants students to succeed. There are 3 tests that are weighted heavy, but they aren't that hard. Attendance isn't mandatory and you can catch up because he wrote the textbook. Barely any homework other than weekly discussions. Easy overall. Take him!!!
Hilarious prof and very easy class. Grades are 15 Packbacks (13 required), 9 chapter quizzes (7 required), and 3 non cumulative exams. Gives a review sheet that practically guarantees an A on every exam. Some questions get recycled from chapter quizzes. Study well 1-2 days before exams and go to lecture, and you're almost guaranteed to get an A.
Dr. Smith would've been a 5. However, he doesn't respond to email or GroupMe and doesn't host office hours besides by appointment or before/after class. So, good luck setting up testing accommodations! Exam questions were often wordy, but manageable. Attendance is optional, but he gave random extra credit for attendance. Lectures are hilarious.
The class was pretty chill, but be sure to get higher grades early on so you don't have to rely on the final. He's a generous grader and his lectures are really fun! Make sure to read the textbook and the quizzes (they help a lot on the test). It's a pretty chill class, and as long as you attend class and do all the homeworks, it's a guaranteed A.
Don't listen to any of the negative reviews, this guy is hilarious and the class is great. He doesn't make you come to lecture, but it's definitely worth it because he explains everything. The only reason I made a B is because I didn't try very hard. Study the textbook, go to class and you'll be fine. Seriously, he goes on the funniest tangents.
Don't listen to the bad reviews. This is a really easy class. There are so many free 100s like the packbacks and the quizzes. You don't even have to go to lecture, as long as you read the textbook you should get an A.
Easy class, quizzes and tests are mostly memorization of the textbook/lecture content.
Prof Smith is very knowledgeable and his class is VERY straightforward. Attendance is not mandatory but you will not get an A in this class if you don't go to class. Most of the material on the exams are said in lecture. He might go off topic but he will explain the needed information well. Also read the textbook and take notes. Overall easy class
