worst class and professor ever
really hard tests
Easy tests... never even went to class, just learned out of the textbook. The one time I did go to class, all he did was talk about his slides, which are on spark anyways...
very good professor. you dont need to go to class bc he puts all of his lectures including the hand written work on SPARK. tests are easy and homework is easy and large portion of grade
Good Teacher. The material is dry, but he is willing to answer any questions during and after class. Homeworks and Test are mandatory, but you can skip the occasional class or two if you are willing to keep up on the work and do all the HW.
If you took physics in high school, this class will be super easy. Even if you didn't, Stevens is a good teacher and tries to make the subject as interesting as possible.
Horrible lecturer. Tests were difficult. Find someone else who teaches this section.
All lectures are on SPARK.. just do the homework and skim the slides. Tests are easy. Easy class and easy A for his Physics 151 class. He's nice and willing to help. Also he's passionate about the subject, but class can be a bit boring. Definitely worth taking though for an easy Physical Science general education credit!
This guy knows what he's talking about and loves teaching it. He's excited to create examples as well as going through slides. You need a lot of logical thinking to do well in this class, but you have the benefit of a cheat sheet full of all your formulas. The only complaint is MasteringPhysics... what a terrible homework system.
His lecture material is a very close parallel to the book material, so it was nice to have one or the other to refer to. Mastering Physics assignments were harder than the exam questions. I loved the fact that he would have the exams graded and posted on Spark within 2 hours. Good prof.
If there is anybody who manages to make physics interesting it's Professor Stevens. Been to office hours a bunch of times and he's always been helpful and incredibly friendly. Has a huge passion for the material and is a great lecturer. I look forward to this class every day-despite never being a physics/math person.
He makes the lectures as interesting as he can for the dry material. I thought the exams were more difficult than others. But if you really understand the MasteringPhysics homework you're set.
great guy, he put on an army helmet and rode a tiny red wagon equipped with a fire extinguisher rocket across our room. hilarious. strongly recommended
One of the best professors I ever had, really made the class easy(physics II is really hard), he explained materials really well, and he's willing to answer any questions you have during either class, before, after, and his office hours, exams are alright, he posted notes right after class, be sure go to his lecture!!
Professor Stevens was great! Physics has been my favorite subject since high school and Jason did a great job of making the material fun and interesting. He's engaging, funny, and incredibly intelligent and explains material very clearly. If you have had honors or AP level mechanics in high school, the class is a blast. Highly recommended!
I am warning those who are planning on taking this class as a gen-ed not to take it. The professor is fun and makes class interesting with exciting demonstrations, but if you expect examples and reviews done in class or help sessions to correlate with tests and/or homework, you will fail. I wish I never took this class, unending stress and failure.
If you took physics in high school, you don't even have to show up. I heard he was a good teacher, but I can't say from experience. The only times I saw him were to pick up the syllabus and turn in the tests. Seriously, this is a couple steps down from AP Physics B.
Interesting professor who always had great examples and usually interesting lectures. Funny guy! Tests were fair, and he scaled our class twice! Knowledgeable and very helpful, but it always seemed like he was mad answering questions during lecture. Homework system was horrible, but he was pretty generous with the grading at the end of the semester
This guy was dreadful. He was good in lecture but the homework was nothing like his lectures and his exams neither resembled the homework nor the lecture slides. Also, the exams were way too hard. Looks like I should have taken it last semester with Blaylock instead.
My favorite professor last semester. His notes were very clear, and the homework and exams were challenging but fair. To top it off, he has a great sense of humor!
Great guy that will help anyone to succeed. He's very flexible and kind.
Good teacher, clearly explains the material but moves quickly. Go to class to learn because the material is very difficult and is nothing like the textbook, or else you'll get a D like me. Homework assignments are challenging and long so make sure you understand the concepts. Do this, combined with the cheat sheet for exams and you'll do okay.
Stevens is a great professor. Exam grades are up the SAME NIGHT as they are taken and he tries as hard as possible to be perfectly clear and helpful. This is especially important in Physics, a class most people just have to take.
Great professor. If you pay attention and study, you should do fine. Labs suck though; they take up most of your time and only count for 10%. Homework is easily Googleable, but good for practice. Exams weren't tough if you studied. Based on what I've heard about other 151 professors, this guy is your best bet.
For someone who's very weak in this subject, I found it hard to follow along at how fast paced he was. Sometimes the SI sessions were more helpful, the homework was incredibly difficult, and the labs took too much time. He's a funny guy, and one of my favorite teachers.
Wonderful professor, I thought I was absolutely hopeless when it came to physics and turns out I still kinda dont know what I'm doing, but either way he's a great teacher whose passionate about the work. A funny, kind, genuine person who really does want his students to succeed and takes every step to do so. If you need to take physics, go Stevens!
Great prof, explains material well and has some great demos. Lecture material can be difficult, make sure you study as exam questions are often a lot harder than hw. He tends to inflate grades too; I really deserved a C in that class but came out with a B. Definitely the top choice for those who must take P151.
Fantastic, clear lecturer. Far better than Boris or another other. Tips for success would be to go to class, keep up with homework, tons of practice problems before exams, and get equation sheets from the SI.
This man is off the charts in every aspect. Simply a great man. The class is tough, but he's a fair grader with the scales. Go to class, do the hw, study, and good notes and you'll be fine. And then as you walk out of the final, give the man a strong handshake and look into his eyes. He is the bomb.
He is a great teacher. His tests are fair and very doable. If you practice the homeworks, it is an easy A.
Physics is tough, and 151 starts to get in depth with calculus-related ideas. But, Stevens doesn't just work off of slides. He writes on his slides and actually solves problems and does work out on them during lecture, then uploads them promptly to Moodle for reference. If you ask, he'll help. Sticks around after class if you have questions.
Stevens is great. He's the sassiest man I know, and does really cool (albeit hilarious) demonstrations sometimes. His lectures are really cool and his slides are clear. The downfall to this class is the homework (MasteringPhysics) and the exams. Both are very, very hard, and if you don't have a complete grip on the material, you will not do well.
Great guy, but the tests are impossible.
I would not call this class easy but grading is more than fair. Lectures are clear and very interesting and Professor Stevens will often get you to consider things in a new way. Doing the homework and doing well in the lab are major grade boosters.
He's a wonderful professor. His lectures are good but not required if you've taken physics before. The tests are moderately difficult but he provides you with plenty of practice opportunities. Overall, he's about as good as it gets for a physics professor.
All I can say is you should probably buy the textbook, because the problems on the test are infinitely harder than both the homework and the (4) "assorted review problems" he gives (yeah, there's only 4 review problems for a 27 question exam). You can be completely comfortable with the homework and review problems and then get a C on the test. Meh
He is definitely a very funny professor. However, the homework problems are much more difficult than anything you see in class, and the exam problems are much harder than anything on the homework. I like him as a person, but his grading is ridiculous. Exams are worth 75% of the course grade, with averages being in the mid 50s (he doesn't scale).
Jason's lectures are great, but his class is VERY tough. If you're not into physics, and you're taking this as a requirement, it's going to be very hard. Tests are ridiculously tough. This is supposed to be an INTRO class. Tests take up 75 percent of your grade! I'm glad this class is over.
Stevens is an amazing guy but the course is tough. He goes extremely fast through his lectures, but he posts his powerpoint slides online. His homework is really challenging but not impossible. I'm not trying to discourage you from taking this course but the exams are really hard. Its all multiple choice so there is no partial credit. Study up.
Whoa. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. Don't take this unless you have to. The lectures are pretty nice, Stevens is clear about the material and is a nice guy but the tests are out-of-this-world difficult. This class is an absolute anchor on your GPA.
Stevens is a great guy. He is funny, engaged, and knows what he's talking about. 151 and 152 are both very intense and mind-blowing. So far, the hardest classes I have taken. The tests are nuts. However, Stevens is available to help and has a great format to his lectures. I specifically moved around my schedule just so I could have him for 152.
There is no correlation between the difficulty of the exams and the difficulty of the example problems, homework, and lectures. Even the SIs were stumped by some of the exam questions. When students approached Stevens for extra advice for how to prepare for the exams, he would laugh and shrug and say that's not his problem.
Stevens is a really good professor and explains the material clearly and answers any questions. The only issue is the exams. They are completely impossible. There are 27 multiple choice questions with no partial credit. The scale does not account for the difficulty of the exams. Avoid this class if at all possible. Lab is pretty easy.
I realize way too late into the semester that he is actually really approachable and will help if you have questions for him, mostly regarding concepts though. The tests killed me as they were more difficult than the homework and were only multiple choice. Also I wish I used the textbook more.
I don't understand y so many people are praising Stevens. Although I found him interesting at first, I eventually realized he made material much more convluted than it really needed to be. Im in 152 now with Willocq (Stevens teaches the other 152 section), and when I look at Stevens' slides instead of willocs I can barely understand what's going on
Stevens is a nice guy, and if you approach him after lecture he can answer questions you may have. The tests are very tough, but usually similar to the practice tests he posts.
He is a great professor who really cares about the students. The class is tough but if you pay attention in lectures and do the practice exams a few days before the test you will not have a problem passing the class and getting a good grade.
If you've taken physics before, this is a review class. If not pay attention, go to SI sessions and you should be fine.
It's a difficult class, but a great professor. He's funny, helpful, and a master of the subject, but the exams are difficult. SI Sessions/office hours will help a lot. I'm very happy I had him as a professor for Phys151 and 152.
I'm not sure if it's Jason, or just the way the class is set up, but I almost felt like we weren't being prepared on purpose. He does a lot of problems in class but the ones on the exam are completely different and exponentially harder. He seems like a nice guy though.
Tough class. Teacher is decent. No curves and tests are really difficult. (Coming from a student who gets straight As). Even if you do and understand all the homework, and in-class questions and do the practice exams, you still may very well get Bs/Cs on the tests.
Stevens does the right thing by explaining how equations are derived from other known equations, so that students have a better conceptual understanding of the topic. Funny/interesting demonstrations, witty jokes at times, and effective teaching reward those who attend his "optional" lectures.
Don't take this class unless you absolutely have to. I took this class and cried/complained a lot. The exams are extremely hard and the homework is difficult as well. Stevens explains the material in class, but flies through the lectures. The demos he does in his lectures help students understand the material.
He was a great professor. Had him for physics 151 and 152. 152 was much harder material than 151 but he still does a good job of teaching it. His in class demonstrations are cool.
Stevens was an excellent teacher for 152, which was much tougher than 151 was. His in class demos really added to every class. He always took the time to show where all the formulas we were using came from which was much better than just being told some formula works. His lectures were clear and though 152 was tough, he made it possible to do well.
Had Stevens for 151 and 152 - he is a great lecturer and is great at teaching all of the material in such a short time. In 152 especially, there is a ton of material to get through - so lectures can seem a bit quick at times. The tests can be difficult - but reward those who prepare well. Stevens is a great professor and really cares!
He's a really fun and helpful lecturer. He often stayed after lecture to answer student questions, even when they were about science in general and not specifically about the class--although I would not recommend asking lengthy questions not related to the class. He's lectures and demos were quite engaging.
Lectures are really well explained and occasionally fun, but its the exams that get you. Do well on labs + discussion + homework, and crank out some effort on exams and it's not hard to get a B+ or A-. Most of the people that get As are ones that have done physics in high school etc.
He's a good professor, but I had a hard time following his explanations. I had a horrible time in this class. The material is difficult and they pretty much expect you have previous knowledge on it and have a grasp on derivates that you can really only get from taking multiple semester of calc though only one is required. Prof is great, class sucks
Great physics professor. Keeps class engaged during lectures and always explains why things are the way they are, not just how to do the problems. 10/10 would take again
He is a great professor but not recommended for those who are not native English speakers. He is going very fast and his exams are harder than the alternative professors.
Honestly a pretty average professor in my opinion. You have to pay attention in class in order to really understand the material that is covered on the exams, which by the way are basically your entire grade. He goes over material during his lectures really fast too, so go to SI sessions for help.
He is my favorite professor so far. Physics is a difficult subject, and he makes it less of a pain than it already is.
LOVED his classes so much--he's very thorough, clear, and entertaining when he lectures. Class can be somewhat fast paced sometimes... make sure you pay attention because he's pretty helpful and very knowledgable! I even considered taking 152 with him bc I enjoyed learning from him (+ learned so much) when it does nothing for my major lol
I think stevens is not a good professor for PHY 152 and should be limited to PHY 151 , he lectures are mostly unclear and vague.
Jason is a bit of a nervous wreck and boring, and unless you took some kind of physics in high school, none of it is gonna make a lot of sense. Pay attention in labs and go to the SI sessions. Also the practice tests really help. The only reason I got an A was because I took AP physics in high school. I skipped half the lectures.
I think stevens is an okay professor. I mean his slides were sometimes useful but not always. I got an A despite of that fact that I didn't attend any of his lectures last semester.
Let's just say this... When the PVnRT problems are the hardest thing you've ever done , you know something is seriously wrong. For real though, he tries to trip you up on every problem on his exams so it is basically like trying to solve a 100,000 piece jigsaw puzzle in 2 hours. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Nice guy though/
Took for both 151/152. I got to know stevens personally, hes a really great guy overall and great at teaching. The best way to understand the material throughly is to see him after class, I did this almost every class and it worked out. As for tests, they are hard, the key is that they are a two step process, use two equations for each question.
I would not recommend Jason to anybody who is taking PHY 151 in the future. Rather go for David Castor as his lectures are way better. Stevens is a great guy "but not every great guy is a great teacher". Most of the time my doubts were not answered seriously and sometimes I was given a vague explanation. STEVENS IS NOT HELPFUL AT ALL.
I had taken Jason for Physics 151 last semester and ever since I have had problems with him. I don't know why but in order to understand anything in his lectures you want to be a genius. The worst part that needs to be improved is the fact that the exams need to be a little easy, becuase they are really different from what is being taught in class.
I would never take a course like this again ever in my life. I had taken Physics in my High school, but I never failed it. The transition to PHY 151 was definitely not smooth at all, and on top of that Stevens made it worse. I wouldn't recommend Stevens to anybody.
I took AP physics in high school and that is why I could pass this class. I had friends who had taken PHY 151 to complete their Gen-Ed requirements but they later realized that it was a big mistake. Overall I think Jason is knowledgeable but when it comes to teaching , I don't think he is doing a great job .
take ANY other professor besides him. Youll learn the same stuff and get a better grade. His exams are way too difficult and lectures + hw + practice exams do not prepare you at all for them. You will see a completely new type of problem on the exam and will be expected to bridge the gap & solve it but a timed exam is no place to be learning.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had and probably about half of our class would agree. Exams are extremely hard and unreasonable. Practice exams are nothing like the real exams. Didn't show us the class stats on the first exam gave what seemed like an unfair curve. -10/10 would take again
Jason Stevens is by far the WORST professor I have had at UMass. His lectures are rambling, useless, and confusing. His exams are often unreasonably difficult and his scales are minimal. One on one he shows little respect and talks to us like we are dumb. If at all possible, do not take his class. The best way to pass is to read the Knight textbook
Did fine in physics 151 with Prof. Kawall, but Stevens was different. First exam was extremely unfair and the group that took the makeup exam had significantly easier problems. He wouldn't say averages on exams and made the questions very difficult. Lecture isn't even worth going to. He is also very disrespectful and demeaning towards students.
Material is tough and Stevens doesn't do the best at explaining the material in lectures. SI's really helped me in passing the class. Demonstrations are cool but multiple choice tests leave little room for error. Don't expect a curve on any of the exams outside of maybe a question back. Previous background in physics is helpful. Wouldn't take again
He is literally one of the best professors. He's a cool, funny, and a respectful person. The physics classes are filled with fun and concentration.
Prof. Stevens is someone who is always willing to help. You can tell he loves his work and he makes the class easy as long as you put in the work. Would definitely recommend this professor to anyone.
He decided to cancel all of our exams when we went remote. It was hard enough to learn at home, let alone when you're not expected to be tested on anything. It genuinely felt like he had given up on us and it wasn't a great feeling. He seemed pretty nice otherwise, his lectures went pretty in depth and he had a lot of cool demonstrations.
Stevens was the worst professors that I've ever had. Avoid if you can and don't take for either of the intro physics. Lazy.
Lectures are boring and you better hope you took physics in high school.. They feel rushed, go over time, and lack any soft of depth beyond several example problems. Be prepared to do long and confusing labs as well.
might as well take another prof as the class is exam heavy and the fact that the lectures are stale. i wouldn't advise taking it for physics
If it wasnt for high school physics Im pretty sure I wouldve failed this class. Utterly useless at teaching. If you ask a question he will not explain it to you, instead he will just repeat the same thing over and over again till you give up. Ive seen that happen to many of my class mates. If you have Professor Stevens might as well drop out.
He is very snobbish about the way he responds to questions and flies through problems on his PowerPoints. He also mutes everyone on the zoom and makes it difficult for you to get noticed in order to ask questions.
If you forgot Physics in HS, I'm sorry but you're gonna fail.
bro he doesn't help u. It's like trying to give a homeless man clothes, but the clothes have fu**ing holes in em.
It just doesn't make any sense. How can someone make physics so unbelievably boring and confusing? You would have to actively try to do so, and Jason Stevens succeeds in that attempt.
To set the record straight, Jason Stevens is an extremely capable professor. If you pay attention during the lectures, you will learn the subject and will have no problem doing homework assignments or getting an A on the exams. His explanations are always in depth and cover all the bases. He is not nearly as terrible as these reviews would say.
Pretty good Professor. Lectures can get bland but it's still a good class. Didn't take any Physics in High School and still did really well in the class.
Prepare to teach yourself physics. Garbage professor.
His lectures are very long and very dry, with almost no participation. Unfortunately this makes them impossible to sit through. You have to teach yourself with the book. Tests are obscenely hard, and he refuses to tell the class averages. HE DOES NOT SCALE PROPERLY. Everyone just fails (:
He gives clear explanations. But, the lectures can be very boring. I suggest reading the book after the lecture. Exams make up 75% of your grade. This class is decent if you have taken physics in high school.
Stevens did not provide an engaging environment for students to learn & improve. Not great at answering questions. No collaboration. Test material varied incredibly from homework and lecture material. Zero partial credit on exams (all MC). Labs/homework kept my grade afloat. Discussion section is also not helpful and quickly runs thru problem sets.
I'm sure Jason is a nice guy, but he's not the best at teaching. He moves too quickly through his material sometimes and often skips important explanations during problem solving. Overall, I had to rely on lots of outside resources to understand the material.
Very boring lectures. Moves too fast and doesnt answer questions well. And when he does he makes you feel stupid for it. Test material is insanely hard and nothing like practice exams or homework material. Would not recommend this teacher if you can avoid him.
Don't take professor Stevens for Physics II. His lectures are awful and don't help very much, he goes too fast through material and when you ask questions he does not give very good answers and makes you feel dumb for it. Exams were nothing like the homework or practice exams or even the material from class. Very different class from Physics I.
His class is pretty tough. I had him for 151 and 152, the latter was much harder. For 152 I had to heavily rely on outside sources to understand concepts. He is kind of abstract in lectures and in HW, I had a hard time recalling things from lecture. Exams are worth 75% of your grade which is outrageous and completely unfair. Would not recommend.
It felt like Prof. Stevens gave up on teaching students. He was the only prof. available for physics 2 semesters in a row and he recycled a good portion of the course semester to semester. He read off the slides did not care if you understand the material and the course is made up of 3-4 tests worth 75% of your grade. I wouldn't suggest taking him.
The worst Professor that I have ever encountered in my entire life. 99% of the class does not know what's going on because it's almost like he's teaching without using actual terms that people who don't have a degree in physics understand. The tests are impossible as theres maybe one or two questions that we actually went over in class. Good luck
