Great Teacher, grades well and takes the effort to write responses. Very excited about the subject area and makes class fly. Funny to add.
Professor Cragwall is amazing! Best English professor I've ever had and so interested in his subject. He gets really excited about Romanticism and is freaking adorable. Two term papers, which he grades fairly and gives lots of comments on. You have to go to class, but class is fun and interesting. VERY nice and so smart it makes my brain hurt.
Professor Cragwall is awesome. Take his class...he'll blow your mind!! Ridiculously smart and super hot. Great professor and adorable, what more could you ask for?
Stuck up SOB
I dont know what those last two posts were about. Professor Cragwall is wonderful. Really nice and very enthusiastic about romanticism. The class is interesting and you'll learn a lot. Plus, he's funny. Take him, you won't regret it.
Um, this guy is such a JOKE! I dropped him as soon as I sat in on one class. He ranted about how he didn't want people to sit in on the class for free...He's a typical ENGL prof: crazy and completely annoying!
Umm, to the last post, how do you know after ONE class? And...I'm in that class. He was joking and employing a common literary device known as...irony. Prof Cragwall is awesome. You'd have to be deaf, blind, and dumb not to enjoy his course.
Best. Professor. EVER. Enough said.
Great professor. He's ridiculously intelligent and funny. The term consisted of two papers, which he graded fairly hard. However, you will walk away from the course understanding what he taught.
He's incredibly funny... and way too smart for most of his students (myself included). While he will manage to make you feel like maybe his brain isn't on the same wavelength as yours, it is challenging in the best way possible. Highly encourages participation and posting on Blackboard, and he's a strict essay grader, but he's worth the work.
Craigwell obviously writes his own comments... anyone notice the similarity in style, tone, and diction in each and every positive comment about him? What student would write such outlandish things? Even if they enjoy the class?
Um, I am not Prof Cragwall and I LOVE the class!! To the last poster, I can tell you have a legit perspective, seeing as how you can't even spell his name right. English isn't my thing but I really enjoy his class. He is very passionate and really helps his students. I hope to take another class with him next semester! He's fun but tough.
If you're going to write as a student there is something you should know: students don't post until after they receive the grade on their first paper and it's too early in the semester for that. Besides I overheard you bragging about the fact that you post your own comments.
Actually for potry we have a ton of little papers. I like the class just dnt really understand a lot. Gives 6 papers but theyre small and is W intensive, so not bad. Really, really smart dude, definitly loves his job. Kinda a hottie too.
Cant stand the sight of this man. Prides himself on being pompous. Ensures to reference obscure texts every chance he gets (in case you forget that he is smarter than you). Will smuggly grade your papers (of which there are only 2) and give you a low grade thinking he is helping you somehow. But that low paper is now half your grade. Thanks, Jack.
At first I was drawn in by his enthusiasm, but I found that he would go off on lengthy tangents and keep our heads on an English merry-go-round. He has this expression that he gives that says "How did you get into college?" He swears and makes funny jokes. Some like him, but he rubs me the wrong way
Absolutely my favorite professor. Enthusiastic, funny, very witty, and highly knowledgeable. Some find him pompous, but I think he is brilliant and really a very sweet man. If English is your thing, you'll love him and he'll make you a better writer. If you just need core, probably not for you. Grades hard to help you. Wonderful professor!
there used to be many more comments here but he probably nixed them all. He reviews himself constantly here. Admittedly pompous and doesnt care about you unless you are as smart as he is. Grade based on 2 papers, and hes harsh, not that you ever know what he wants. Will not care about messing with your GPA because he knows all. DO NOT TAKE.
Oh Jasper.... so he's in love with himself which is funny sometimes, awkward others. He is a tough grader on the 2 assignments you have all semester which sucks but it's tough love, and he mostly just wants you to come in to talk to him so he doesn't have to read a crappy paper. He thinks everything is a reference to homosexuality, so be ready
Let me say this, Cragwalls class is like the agro-crag. Hard to get to the top, but exciting to climb and a shiny trophy at the end...or utter shame, either or.
I almost puked seeing the comment "kind of a hottie". Wow, he's the epitomy of strange(very speculative) and how an English degree is far beyond useless. Useless artsy-fartsy bs.
Professor Cragwall is hilarious! He knows a lot about poetry and is very intelligent. One of my favorite Professors I have had in my college career. Take this class.
ok I took him for romantic brit lit 2 semesters ago and while I do agree he is tough and there are only 2 papers, the guy knows his stuff and gets very into it. He is very funny, sometimes a little weird but honestly he's one of the best engl professors i've had. I think ppl are just mad because they were lazy and got low grades. i earned my B+
amazing - take anything he ever teaches.
He is one of the most entertaining teachers I have ever had in my life. He's very animated during his lectures and he speaks so eloquently. It's a little hypnotic..in a good way! You will write several 1 page papers which I like because they're more focused and this helps you to dig deep into the material. I definitely recommend taking him! :)
Class isn't hard if you write good papers. He seems really insecure, and swears a lot. Overall, he's condescending, pretentious, and utterly, utterly charming.
Dude is awesome. Knows his stuff. Heard him described as the darling of the English department, and it appears to be for good reason. Talks like a scholar which can be intimidating, but his lectures are funny and ridiculously interesting Don't count on an A, he has got some fairly high standards. Office hours kind of intimidating.
Jasper Cragwall is an arrogant and pompous jerk. Although he is extremely intelligent, which is respectable, he acts as if he is the smartest and best professor at Loyola. He could truly care less about you or your grade. I was violently ill and missed just one class and he rejected my doctor's note and said he didn't care at all. DO NOT TAKE.
Jasper is awesome! He is relatable and can jump to any point in any text and explain it in a light that both engages students, and teaches them about the text and author. He is a fair grader, and keeps the class thoroughly enjoyable. The texts are very interesting, and there are only 4 two page papers, 1 midterm, and 1 6 page paper. HE IS GREAT!!!!
He is just brilliant. Every class, he just blows my mind. He's also pretty charming and really witty, so class is never a bore. I agree with some of the posts that he is probably a bit too smart for his students though. He also never stays after class to talk to students, so make an appointment during office hours instead.
I don't understand why Cragwall doesn't have universally spectacular reviews. He is one of (if not THE) most brilliant and engaging lecturers at Loyola. If you are an English major, take every class with him that you possibly can. You will not be sorry. You will be utterly charmed.
This class was "Polite Satanism, Enthusiastic Devilry". Cragwall is amazing. He is very very intelligent and his class is well structured and well put together. Definitely worth it for English Majors.
BY FAR, my favorite professor at loyola. He explains everything clearly, he is super funny. I look forward to the class. There are discussions online before every class on the reading, and 3 tests. you have to study for them, but they are clear.
Absolutely amazing professor, my favorite class this semester. His class is never boring, and he's not like most professors out there. Three tests, 5 quote ids, 1 essay. If you studied and/or paid attention in class it was really simple. Online discussions are due, but they only need to be a few sentences long. He's amazing and hilarious, take him.
He's an okay professor. If for any reason you miss class a lot he will hold it against you - even if you have valid excuses. His lectures are incredibly boring and he cuts students off a lot when they participate. But if you do participate he will see where your coming from even if you sound like a dumbass. I would not recommend taking him.
Granted, he is very intimidating at first. But if you're an English major YOU WILL LOVE HIM! He is probably the most passionate English professor I have ever had, and he cares a lot about his students. You do read and write a lot, but it's extremely rewarding and he makes an effort to get to know you and relate the subject to your interests.
For a writing intensive class, I fully recommend Cragwall. If you take notes on all the poems in class and reiterate what he says in paperson tests you will likely get an A. That doesn't mean you've lost your creative license, but add onto what you've covered in class. He is funny, knowledgeable, drops pop culture references, and grades kindly.
He's basically Stephen Colbert if he was obsessively into Romantic Lit. Cragwall is a very fun and enthusiastic person, and although a super tough grader, you'll want to do your best for him and put in the time on the papers.
Jasper Cragwall is extremely intelligent. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. His lectures are brilliant, they dazzle listeners and engage students to want to succeed in his class. He is hands down the best English Professor at Loyola. However, the guy is a pompous skeeze who is selfish and has no time to help students. Bewar
Cragwall is splendid. His sheer level of knowledge, enthusiasm, kindness, wit and passion is pretty much godly. He's a rare breed of English prof.
This class was so far the hardest thing I've tackled in my life, but I loved every second of it. Cragwall is hilarious, intimidating, but not menacing. He's brilliant to a point that makes you feel stupid, but he won't blatantly highlight that stupidity to the class. He's easygoing, but does indeed grade papers in depth. He gives his class purpose.
I LOVE him! He is extremely knowledgeable, outrageously funny, and completely captivating. I have never learned so much in a literature class in my life. I would recommend recording his lectures, because everything he says is mind-blowing. He knows his material well. Read, go to class, participate. He makes you work for it, but it is worth it.
He's hilarious and makes otherwise dull material come to life. Only allowed to miss 2 classes though before it affects your grade, so attendance is a must. Take detailed notes on the readings during class and you should do just fine.
Cragwall is without a doubt the most incredible, hilarious, and utterly engaging professor at Loyola. He enthralls students with his knowledge, wit, and enthusiasm. He can be very intimidating just because of his energy, but he's incredibly kind and caring. If you take good notes for the exams and write interesting papers an A is not hard.
Really funny and makes a 75 minute lecture on a poem actually enjoyable. He comes off as really intense and smart but not scary. Pretty easy tests if you take good notes, only one paper. To fulfil you're core he's your man.
An AMAZING professor. He is funny and actually picks good things to read and is super risque in a way that terrifies you until at least week 3. Incredibly hard grader, though. You have to be willing to work and have him change your ideas 18 different times before you submit your papers.
He's hilarious, wildly intelligent, and makes you give a crap about poetry. Like a professor out of a movie. It's difficult, but you can definitely get by with Sparknotes. The worst part was the papers, which he grades really difficultly. But if you're looking for a good prof with an interesting class everyday this is your man.
Cragwall is rigorous and challenging, not to mention delightful. This class was part philosophy, theology, history of secularization, then what poets made of religion. It was mostly about Blake, but he led the entire class through the strange worlds in a way that made them tangible. He's an incredible lecturer and discussion leader.
One of the best professors I have had in a long time. He actually tries to get the class to engage in the reading and his lectures are meant to get a firm understanding of the books we read, despite some being difficult. You post responses on sakai for each reading. Grading is not bad once you know what he wants which is specificity in papers
He is absolutely hilarious. He is super passionate and knowledgable about the books and poems that we read in class. Makes the subject super enjoyable. Made me interested in books that I never would have enjoyed before. He cares so much about students and is extremely understanding. Tells great stories.
Dr. Cragwall is a hoot and a half. He is energetic and excited about the texts, and brings stimulating ideas to every class. The reading load is small, but must be read closely for exams and papers. His assignments are very manageable though. He's incredibly awkward but in the most charming and endearing way.
Professor Cragwall is one of the most interesting professors I have ever had. He is also very funny and readily available for extra help. There is a fair amount of reading to keep up with and papers are a little difficult but aren't they always? Great guy, great class.
He's an entertaining professor who is passionate about his concentration. I wish I could rate him well due to that but he makes the class way harder than it needs to be. He's a very tough grader and he brags that he only gives two As a semester. He's a cool guy though. If you're William Blake reincarnate you may be able to pass.
Jasper is an amazing professor, possibly the best I've ever had. Yet he gave me the lowest grade I've received in college. The class is EXTREMLEY difficult for a core. Do not take if you are simply looking for a gpa boost, but you will learn a lot.
Wow, Prof. Cragwall is awesome. He's so smart and funny. That said, he can be kind of intimidating. He is spastic and tells a lot of jokes, but he's also a very hard grader. See him about all your papers because he knows how to make them better. Exams are easy, though. It's not a very hard class if you try.
He actas like he knows what hes doing, but in reality he seems to confuse you even more than necessary. Has blunt vocabulary and quite opinionated, will be a tough grader, and does not make himself available for constructive criticism. Do not take if you have other options available.
Prof. Cragwall is sooooooo funny and insanely smart. He's also very intimidating and really spastic. You'll learn a lot in the class and it's not the hardest. But be warned, he's a little imposing and it feels like every class is a performance.
Easy homework load (I'm in his Jane Austen class) and he's frequently very funny. His class is definitely more of a stand-up routine, but he also has insightful ideas and will make you a better writer. I love this class!
Prof. Cragwall is a very smart guy but expects you to be at the same level as him for a 100 level class. It was a really boring and difficult class. If you really like Shakespeare and William Blake you will do fine because that is all he lectures on. Really hard grader especially on the essays and is really conceited. Would not reccomend.
Daddy Cragwall is a solid choice.
Prof. Cragwall is a true gem if you want to use classes at Loyola to develop as an intellectual. He might be the smartest Prof. I've ever had (PhD from Princeton). Work hard on your papers. Write down his funny or unique sentences in class and USE THEM IN YOUR PAPERS. Amazing resource to have once you finish his class. Director of Undergrad English
As a stem major, I take very few English classes and I consider myself lucky to have come across Prof. Cragwall. While I did already love poetry, he finds a way to make dull sonnets the most interesting thing you will ever read. He is funny and understanding of our prior school commitments as students. I have never regretted coming to class.
Prof. Cragwall likes to give his political views. And if you are not a Warren loving supporter he will make you suffer. Also unlike other reading class sections do, he doesn't make you apply what you learn to a test. He instead makes you memorize all lines from Lear, and poems and expects you to do that. Not even himself can do such thing!
I'm sad I didn't get to finish Cragwall's class. He made it worthwhile. Don't miss out on him! He's a great choice for non-English majors because he makes lit accessible. One of the best professors at Loyola. He's super caring about his job and wants to make students as comfortable as can be. Class was a typical two paper, midterm deal.
I love this man. Prof. Cragwall is a super interesting and smart guy, but he's also hilarious. Minimal work- just read the homework (poems, plays, and books) and then participate in the class discussion if you want. 2 papers, a midterm, and a final. Understands the life of a college student. 10/10 would recommend. I wish I could take him again.
Horrible professor i suggest none of you take. If you do not like Literature he will make you pay for it. Only take this course with this professor if it is the very last option. By far worst teacher ive had in my 21 years of having them.
Dr. Cragwall is so accommodating to COVID. He cancels class if he notices that we are all feeling mentally drained and need a day off, he also truly asks how we are doing. His knowledge of the readings is amazing, as a stem major this class is very easy and I feel blessed to have such a caring professor. 12/10 wants to make your life better!
Dr. Cragwall is an excellent, sincere, and comical (unfiltered) professor. If you are an english major, find time to visit him. His education is no joke. One-on-ones are ideal. You have to read a lot but he brings life to the material. You will feel smarter after each class, I promise. I had him during Covid. He was incredibly understanding.
There's a bit of a cult surrounding Cragwall among English majors, and I don't understand why. He's an insane grader, and he pretends to care about students but then assigns two midterms and two finals. Take his class if you want to be spoken over (esp if you're a woman) or want to hear him say problematic things with no repercussions!
Dr. Cragwall takes great pains to set his students up for success. He has cancelled exams, moved deadlines back, and cut classes short to make sure our mental health was okay. He is the embodiment of Cura Personalis. He does not grade easily but is happy to talk with you before deadlines. Use office hours and you will not regret his classes!
Dr. Cragwall evidently cares for his students and checked up on us almost every session but boy is he a tough grader. His final and midterm were probably the hardest exams I have ever taken and it's really discouraging especially with how difficult online learning is. For someone who cares, you'd expect his grading to me more lenient but NOPE.
Dr. Cragwall is absolutely delightful to have as a professor, but you will only have a few large projects to do and he's a tough grader. Tests are related directly to everything he says in class (and he says A LOT). Papers have to be original thought and are eight pages long. I have a 3.8 GPA and I barely managed a B- with my best effort!
Cragwall is the worst professor I've taken at Loyola. He's tenured so that excuses his poor class structure and disregard for student's wellbeing. You literally have to write down everything he says JUST to pass. The overall grade is based on two papers and two exams. He's also extremely condescending and thinks he's Edmund Burke reincarnated.
He is probably the smartest man I have ever met in my life. He makes the readings so accessible and is incredibly caring. He truly loves his students and wants them to succeed. I couldn't recommend him more.
Literally the best class I've taken at Loyola. Professor Cragwall cares so much about his students, and it shows. Class is so entertaining and fun I never even wanted to skip. Such an amazing professor take him if you get the chance!
For the final you have to memorize over 40 poems and be able to know who wrote the poem and it's title when you are shown only a few lines of it. The class seems easy but once you realize how much is on the final, you discover it is an extremely demanding class.
Dr. Cragwall is such a kind and passionate soul. If you engage with the material in class and allow yourself to get vulnerable with the readings, this course could change your life. I was pleasantly surprised by the writing expectation in this writing intensive course, it was very manageable. I would recommend this course to any and everyone.
Professor Cragwall is indisputably one of the best professors at Loyola Chicago. I have taken several classes of his throughout my undergraduate career, and I am always blown away by the care he has for his class, students, and the course material. He is helpful, understanding, hilarious, and a fantastic lecturer. I cannot recommend him enough.
372B focused on Jane Austen, & we read practically all her works. Difficulty comes from the sheer amount of reading, almost a book every 1-2 weeks (200-400 pages). 2 papers that can be made easy if you go to office hours; 2 exams made easy if you go to class. He loved participation in this class but he will talk a fair amount himself. He cares.
Cragwall is a fantastic lecturer but you have to attend class to be able to comprehend the niche ways he analyzes poems. He was not a difficult essay grader but the midterm and final were difficult as you have to memorize lines from A LOT of poems. Learned the hard way from the midterm. Biggest advice is make a quizlet and take notes.
Dr. Cragwall is an amazing honors discussion prof! His lectures were engaging, he set clear grading criteria for papers, he was helpful during office hours, he wasn't too tough of a grader, and he was funny too. He also let the class discuss what we wanted to discuss rather than use discussion as another lecture like some profs do. Overall TAKE HIM
Save yourself and don't take him. Class structure is unfair and midterm and final are blue book exams where you have to memorize over 40 different poems that are multiple pages long.
Prof. Cragwall is probably one of the best professors I've had at Loyola. He's so engaging, and I actually love coming to this class even though I took it for my core. I really was not expecting to like it that much. It's not the easiest class I've taken, but if you do the work, you'll be fine. I have so many 'a-ha' moments in this class.
If you want to be engaged, challenged to think deeply, and dive into literature enthusiastically, take Professor Cragwall!!! This is my second class with him and I would take him again in a heartbeat. He is interesting, encouraging, and deeply intelligent. Go to his office hours if you feel overwhelmed, he cares deeply about his students.
This is best core class I have ever taken. The class has NO powerpoints, all we do is talk about the poetry that we read and write 3 papers. He is so passionate about the poems that it makes you actually engaged. He never forces participation which is nice for those who are shy. He's a fair grader and the work is minimal. I recommend!
Prof. Cragwall's lectures are so hard to NOT pay attention. He clearly is very passionate and it makes the class go by so quickly and is actually fun to engage in the class even if you don't like poetry. The papers are relatively short + the exam is easy if you do the readings
