he is an awesome teacher!! his notes are very clear and helpful. the tests are fair and he gives study guides for each exam that are an excellent review.
Good teacher
This teacher is wicked easy if u study the notes thoroughly and read the book for reinforcement. All multiple choice tests and no homework. Also, very funny too, which brings light to a dull course.
Very smart and also a great person.
Overall pretty awesome guy, defintely the nicest and most committed science teacher I've had so far in college. Genuinely cares about the students. Can be overzealous when it comes to trying to cover material too fast that is too hard. I would still recommend Horta's class to an underclassman, as he is overall quite fabulous.
Great Teacher, Knows what he is talking about. Very helpful. answers all questions. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR PHY CHEM 1 and 2. He makes jokes and makes class interesting. overall a great teacher!!!
Very nice
this professor was funny, his lectures were never boring, he went out of his way to make copies of pages from the text for students that had not bought the book yet,he was sympathetic and rather lenient with the grading, exams were straightforward and easier than other professors teaching the same course, study guides were very accurate,no homework!
Great teacher! Gives out power point slides and study guides for test. Usually has bonus point questions on tests.
He is a great teacher. He always keeps in contact with all his students through emails and wants you to succeed. Phy Chem is not an easy class but Dr. Horta makes it enjoyable. Exams are multiple choice and he gives you Bonus questions. Overall he's pretty great. Definitely worth taking
Class is relatively easy to understand. It's just that the exams will get you if you don't study the study guide he gives. He goes over it the day before the exam, so it's really useful.
lectures are fair, but he makes the lab tests absolute hell, dont know why but they are =/
Excellent instructor! Extremely intelligent and very willing to help out if you have questions. If you put in the effort, and do the optional homework, then you'll end up doing a little better than you thought you did. Extremely well organized! Definitely worth taking, although his lab exams were difficult, but fair if you put in the effort.
He is a nice man but as a professor, he isn't the best person. He always there if you need help with the material in the class but he always zooms through his lectures sometimes. You have to put in a good amount of work from your end. But he isn't that bad. He always takes what you say into consideration and tries to improve his classes.
The summer class was very fast paced which was as expected. The material was presented clearly and questions were answered thoroughly. Was not a huge fan of using a 'clicker' during the exams, but I can see the value of the process. I would recommend Prof. Horta to anyone looking for a quality organic class.
Class content was difficult, but tests were fair and class itself was relatively easy.
I had his fast-paced organic class in the summer, so there were a lot of things covered in just about 5 weeks. His lectures and the textbook were really helpful for the tests. The tests were okay, not too difficult but not easy. If you study well, you'll have the confidence to get a B or even A.
Could not have had a better teacher for such a challenging course. You could tell he was very passionate about the content and it made it very interesting. Turns out I love organic chemistry, but I don't think this would have been the case without Dr. Horta teaching it!!
I had him for Orgo I&II during the summer. If you attend class everyday and do the assignments thoroughly, then the exams won't be that difficult. Great class overall.
Hard Class, best O-chem professor at this school.
He's a really good teacher and does a good job explaining things clearly. The only issue I had was that he moved a little too fast for me to keep up with the notes, but it was a summer class so this wasn't really his fault.
Very aware when we gave blank stares and would re-explain things. Taught the class very well - more about the concepts instead of the memorization which I think is the downfall of most Orgo professors. Does not hand exams back, but they are available to review in office hours which I found helpful.
Dr. H is very helpful and is readily available to answer your questions, whether in person or through email. Sometimes seemed to rush through material, though this was a summer course so that was expected. All in all, I would def take a class with Dr. H again.
I asked for extra help from this prof and he acted like I wasn't trying hard enough on my own. Prior to this class I had a 3.92 gpa. The Class avg is a 77 and he thinks this is good! You have Ben warned. Stay away from this prof!!!
Great teacher, has a great personality that makes you just want to learn. Class is the right amount of hard and easy. DEFINITELY A MUST HAVE TEACHER!
The subject itself is difficult, but Dr.H does his best to give us all the resources possible to do well. He is extremely fair in his exams and grading. He sometimes goes too fast through the lecture, but all you have to do is tell him and he will go back. He is one of the few professors here that truly wants to see his students succeed.
He's a great professor if you can keep up with the work. If you fall behind I would suggest a tutor instead of going to him directly, but other than that it's the best chem class I've taken. I would take him for Phy chem II.
Dr H is one of the BEST teachers at UMass. His "medical trivia" makes his lectures interesing and he wants you to really learn. Some may think his exams are tricky but I believe he wants to make you think more before you answer. Me and many others have an A, but you have to work for it. If you want to learn from a GREAT professor stick with Dr H.
Great guy, very willing to help all of his students out. His tests are on the difficult side, so you have to be willing to work and study hard. He, unlike the other professors, gives homework per chapter, but it really helps you to learn the material! He is always willing to answer any questions. You will definitely learn something in his class!
His exams are completely different from the assigned chapters. He makes it difficult to do well in his course
It seems Dr. Horta covers more material than the other profs and his exams may be harder, but he’s the best at explaining concepts. You may get a better grade with another prof but you’ll learn more with Dr. Horta. I found myself teaching classmates from other sections. He’s for you learning, not just passing. Know EVERYTHING in his study guides!
I really expected to enjoy his course, but I ended up dreading it. He is more interested in showing us complex reactions, than in teaching. Unimaginably self-absorbed. Thinks very highly of himself and is close-minded toward any opinion that differs from his own.
Really interesting class. Professor really really likes what he does and he's good at it. Because of that, it sometimes is confusing. But he is really good about going to for help or asking questions and he explains it in a way that you understand. Homework helps a lot, and don't skip.
Best teacher for Phy Chem and Phy Chem 2. Class not mandatory but you will miss so much if you don't go. Professor showed great mastery of subject.
He is a great teacher, you have to apply yourself because the subject matter is very hard.
He is one of the best professors I've ever had. You have to really apply yourself in order to well because the material is difficult but its worth it & makes you feel that much better when you do well. Dr. H has an extensive knowledge about all the course material & his teaching style really makes you learn the material for good & not just to pass.
Excellent professor! Exams were fairly difficult but if you put the work in you will do fine!
Enthusiastic professor, lectures are very informative but sometimes go by very quickly, need to pay attention at all times. Attendance is mandatory, as he uses a clicker and grades you based on the questions you answer in class on that clicker.
Dr. Horta is awesome. He really wants you to learn and if you put in the work, you will understand it. Soemtimes he goes a little too fast in class but if you watch the lectures he posts before class, it is easier to follow. I love Dr. Horta and would absolutely take a class from him again.
took dr. horta for both phy chem and orgo, and I must admit that I would not have learned nearly as much had I not. BUT slackers beware! if you're not dedicated to put forth your best effort, there is no point in registering for his class. he has very high expectations for his students, and anyone who isn't committed won't do well. but I loved him!
Extremely smart professor, he knows his stuff and he makes you learn the material. He's not an easy professor but if you pay attention and put in the effort, you'll get a good grade.
Orgo seems like a scary subject but if you dedicate yourself to retaining the information he teaches it will help you later down the road. Horta loves the subject and you start to really enjoy it too! And make sure you learn the pKa values!
Had him for Phy Chem last year. He has ABSOLUTELY no intentions of helping you if you're struggling with his class- I went back 4 times for extra help, once he wasn't there and the other 3 times he pretty much said to use google! Awful teacher!
WORST PROFESSOR AT UML! STAY AWAY!!! Does not like to help people.
Good teacher, very helpful especially if you go to his office hours for extra help.
Dr. Horta is the worst professor I ever had. I made my schedule for next semester based on not having him for PhyChem II.
The last few posts must be from people from another planet! Dr. Horta is one of the best at UML. Yes he's tough and makes you work hard for your your grade, but you'll learn so much. He's very friendly and helpful, but he won't give you the answers if you can't answer questions for him, so do some work before visiting his office. VERY RECOMMENDED!!
Dr. Horta is passionate about chemistry & really knows his stuff. He's a great professor. I'm currently getting an A in this class, but my only complaint is his testing format. He uses a written and clicker format for his testing which uses too much time. Multiple choice questions mean multiple answers. I understand and enjoy chem because of him!
Good teacher and good guy. He could explain concepts well but he could be so wordy at times that I found it hard to learn from him. He's a nice guy and is really helpful if you go to his office hours. You can also tell he really likes chemistry. The worst part of his class was the test format and the clickers.
Very intelligent, enthusiastic; I think he eats, sleeps & breathes Chemistry. Hard material, he goes fast so you def need to prep beforehand. He can be difficult to communicate with via email, but is very approachable personally and much more helpful than his reputation portrays. I didn't like him early on, now love him & recommend highly
You can tell this guy loves chemistry and is passionate about it, but he expects you to do most of the learning outside of class with his long and monotonous voice recorded videos and reading. This class is no walk in the park, and the way he formats/grades his exams is nuts. Clickers are annoying and take away from time on the exam!
I took Orgo II with him last summer and he was the best! Super enthusiastic and knowledgeable, and he explained everything very clearly. Classes were 6-10 pm 2-3 times a week, but he did the best job possible at keeping us interested. I studied every day and read all the chapters - I got an A.
Dr. Horta... where to begin. He runs the PhyChem program for the college of health sciences and it nicely, needs some revamping. He gives all tests by "clickers" where all multiple choice answers can have more than one answer, or no answer at all. There is no rhyme or reason to his exams.. take Garelnabi!
Dr. Jorta will push you. Watch his videos, come prepared to class, and follow up with the material always. Like he says, it takes practice. You get what you put into it. Amazing person, and great personality. Enjoys what he does and will help anyone.
Awesome Guy. Intimidating at first but really knows what hes talking about and loves what he does. Do the work, read and do practice problems and this course will something you will be proud of yourself for successfully completing.
Dr. Javier Horta is an extremely knowledgable and hard working professor. His well organized ability to explain the course and crystal clear concepts makes him unique. He really takes pain for his students by sending regular emails to keep them well informed and by posting videos to give them an idea about the topics to be covered in class.
Dr. Horta is wicked nice and passionate about chemistry. His tests take some getting used to, but he is a great teacher and if you study, you will do well and learn a lot.
build a good foundation with the early material or the rest of the class will make no sense. Hard subject, decent instructor
A wonderful teacher who loves his subject. His enthusiasm gave me more interest and helped me see the critical importance of the subject. Not easy but gives you the tools to succeed if you use them. Tests are a bit tricky at first but you get used to them. Same goes for the clickers. They are so much better than filling out a bubble sheet.
tough course lots of information! Dr. Horta is very knowledgable on the subject, a very nice person and willing to answer emails and questions.
He's a type of professor that likes to push you to your max and constantly keeps you on your toes, but he loves his job and he does his absolute best to teach you the material. Switched class room is just their to help you, its your choice whether you want to watch them or not. Some are very helpful; however, they're very time consuming!!
Dr.Horta is a great teacher, you are better off having him as a professor. He teaches so that you learn and it will help in all other courses, great teacher!!! take him
Really cute and quirky guy! He's tough and the material is hard, but he makes you know your stuff. Some people complain about him answering your question but if you actually tried to find the answer on your own, he WILL help you. I took him for both Phy. Chem 1 & 2 as well as Orgo. He's tough but exceedingly competent at his job.
Dr. H is probably the smartest person I have ever met. His class is tough, but it is doable if you are willing to put in the effort. Show up to class, study his study guides and do not fall behind on the material and you will pass
Very clear and concise with his lectures, though his flipped classroom style can be tedious by adding on additional online lectures to his classroom lectures. If you came to Umass lowell looking to actually learn then he is giving you your money's worth. He is a competent, efficient professor with a with a fabulous sense of fashion.
Hard teacher, but fair. I took a four hour summer course with him and he was an overall great teacher
Awesome guy. Willing to do all he can to help you in and out of the classroom. Pay attention, study, do any homework he assigns. His tests are scary but fair. He makes sure you know the material. Understand what he gives on the study guy instead of just memorizing. Take this professor he's awesome
Tough class but Dr. Horta knows his stuff. He gets you ready for the ACS exam
When going over examples in class, it would be more helpful to pose a question (mechanism/synthesis) and give the class a few minutes to try to solve it on their own sheet of paper before just putting it on the board so that each person has time to figure out what they are doing wrong. If time is an issue, fewer examples in this manner is better.
Took Dr. Horta during my summer Organic Chemistry course. The class is extremely fast paced but he knows his stuff and tries to make class interesting with real life applications. He is also one of the best graders, giving scaling, a dropped lowest exam grade, bonus points from homework, and an altered grading system. Excellent professor overall.
I have had this professor for a few courses on top of this one and I have to say He's great! He's very fair and if you read the book on top of going to class you'll do great. He is very enthusiastic about what he does and is always willing to help if you ask. Class is spiced up with clicker questions that you get extra credit for at the end.
Overall a decent and quirky professor. Dr. Horta teaches a tough but very fair class. He gives study guides as well as assigns homework that is ACTUALLY beneficial to the exams. I definitely liked him better than another Organic Chemistry professor I had.
I found the class interesting and I liked Professor Horta. He was helpful when we had questions and tried to break up the 4-hour classes. There is a lot of homework but it was not mandatory, and when I did it I found it helped my understanding. Horta's tests are hard but he curves the grades.
I love Professor Horta. He is a professor who cares for his students and wants to see you succeed. I took him for every chemistry course I could including a lab. You will learn your stuff if you pay attention. His tests are hard, but he understands that and helps you in any way that he can.
If you want to pass phychem don't take him
To really LEARN, Horta is the man. He's the only prof on south with a chem PhD (from MIT!), plus he has an MD, so nobody is more qualified than him to teach chem in college of health. Horta is one of the best profs at Lowell and a really nice guy. Don't believe the slackers who whine because they want an easy pass without working or studying hard.
IF YOU WANT TO PASS DONT TAKE HIM. Zero help if you go to office hours, he tells you to google everything. He also doesnt respond to emails, even if emailed multiple times for help with information. Pulls his exam questions out of seemingly nowhere, for they arent on the slides or in lecture. Worst "Professor" i've taken at Lowell
I've had Dr. Horta for 2 classes this semester (Organic and Phy Chem 2) and I highly recommend taking him for both of these. The material is very difficult but he explains it well. Study guides always given (and a life saver for tests), he e-mails back almost immediately, and will always help you if you ask. Writing notes before class really helps.
I had Dr. Horta for Phy Chem II & Organic Chem this semester. I enjoyed his lectures because he wasn't monotonous. He's a great lecturer; clear, engaging, & very knowledgable. The material is difficult & he expects you to put in effort. He seems a little intimidating at first, but he's actually a really nice, down-to-earth guy & willing to help.
A sincere advice for all hard working and committed students: Take him if you really want to learn the course. He explains very well and if you ask for help after you have gone through his lectures, I am 100% sure, he will never say NO. He loves his hardworking students and recognizes them. If you send him an email, he will get back to you ASAP!
He is a nice guy and willing to help. He always respond to e-mails and his study guides are what exactly that is likely to be tested on. Just study the study guide and you'll be fine. I got a B for Organic reactionstructure and he said it is the hardest course you will be taking! He was sort of right, but thanks to his study guide.. I did well
The 4 hour lectures were long, but we had breaks every hour. He kept them interesting w real life applications but made hard material manageable. Lets you drop an exam & get up to 7% extra credit and replies quickly to questions via email. You get what you put in for this class and he really does want you to do well! Highly recommend!!!
He's a great professor and cares about his students understanding the material. He teaches it in a manner that is both interesting and digestible. I liked that he is able to incorporate interesting examples and sparking interest into what would normally be an arduous course. He's understanding of students' constraints and will try his best to help.
Great Professor! It's one of those classes that if you want to do well, then attend the lecture. He does a fantastic job explaining everything, and seems to place more emphasis on the technical aspect of it rather than including information that you don't really need to know. Made the class very interesting
A rare combination of having a thorough understanding of the material and exceptional teaching qualities. Realistic, understanding, straight to the point, and effectively covers all material. Throws in relevant fascinating and funny points, but never wastes time. Highly recommended.
He is patient, respects us, will repeat as often as we ask, doesn't belittle the student
Nice Guy, Seems to really care, he looks genuinely upset when you ask a dumb question or if he asks a question and no one knows the answer, one of the best teachers here at lowell i think. Very good at explaining. Very intelligent man, went to harvard and mit. ALso he pretty much writes the test so having him is a help. Show up take notes, easy A
Worst class I've ever taken. The exams are unnecessarily hard and we didn't get study guides at all. Dr. Horta didn't even mention the exams after we had taken them. The sequence of the class didn't make much sense to me and theres a random section of organic. I wouldn't take this class unless you are a nursing major and absolutely have to.
Exceptional Professor! Responds quickly to emails, Helps you to understand whenever you need him, very disciplined and organised, Listens to his students very seriously, always feel glad to see his students succeed, teaches very well with full dedication and energy. Such a busy Professor but have never seen him tired. Always full of enthusiasm!!!
I found that this class was overall easier than phichem. There is a decent amount of written homework form the book and online assignments. The online homework program that is used is horrible. The class progressively gets more difficult as the semester goes on. Professor Horta wasn't as clear or helpful with the material as in other classes.
I took him for physiological chemistry lecture. He is extremely intelligent and as much as I hate chemistry he made it somewhat interesting. I had quite a bit of trouble with this class. His lectures are long but he does a good job of explaining the material. His exams are very long and hard. Make sure you go to class and read the textbook.
because it was a summer course it was excelled which made it much more challenging. He moved very quickly over some of the tougher topics that made it much harder to internalize those ideas. Also in the math problems they can be hard to follow sometimes because he does not always show what equation was used
Took him for an accelerated summer course. Had a quiz almost every class but was easy if you pay attention and do the homework.
I loved this class, it was challenging, interesting and the professor frequently used ways to assess students' understanding. Even though I felt at the beginning that homework was excessive I was mistaken. Homework was fair as all other evaluation tools. I won't hesitate to take another class with Dr. Horta. He taught me and I learned a lot.
I had Dr. H for CHEM II, which is an introductory course, but the class is still tough. it's apparent that his level of understanding of the material is profoundly deep. He loves to throw in that extra piece of knowledge for those who are interested. He's an asset to students considering careers in medicine. I found his subtle jokes pretty amusing.
Horta is an excellent professor but is so smart that it sometimes hurts his teaching ability. He explains things in complex ways that are hard to understand for people who aren't great at chemistry and does not really break down complex ideas and terms. His lectures feel rushed sometimes also. The class is not easy and requires a lot of attention!
Great professor, knows his stuff, and cares if you learn. Can sometimes go fast over difficult material, so ask for clarification if you don't understand. Drops lowest test grade. Would absolutely take again.
Horta is an incredible professor. I heard that this class was terrible, but I had a great experience. The first three exams I scored a high A and the last I got a 90, which I was pleasantly surprised about because previously I had struggled with chem. He is a fair grader and the study sheets he prepares are similar to the questions on the exam.
Tough at first but once you know what is expected of you the class becomes really interesting! Follow the study guides for exams and keep up with the material and you'll be fine!
Everyone tries to make Phy Chem seem so much worse than it really is. It ended up being my favorite class this semester. Dr. Horta is a great lecturer and always makes abstract concepts clear. Looking forward to having him again next semester. Would recommend!
Dr. Horta was hands down the best professor I had out of all the professors I had during the semester. His lectures are clear and broken down in a manner that makes the material easy to understand. He is also extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the course, which makes me eager to learn and apply myself.
Dr. Horta has an MD and a PhD in Chemistry so if you have a chemistry question, especially pertaining to biology or biological systems he has the answer, but he wants to know that you've made a solid attempt at finding the answer on your own. Be prepared for a lot of pKa. Every lecture (he only taught the lecture portion) incorporated pKa.
Great professor!
Prof Horta is the man. The class is hard and you are going to need to do a a lot of studying but he is a great teacher and is super smart.
Easy going person, and can explain concepts in a simple manner.
This professor is incredible! He's thoughtful, funny, and clearly knows what he's talking about. He's very energetic and down to earth. Horta understands that the material can be tough and at times dull, so he tries his best to make the class have a laugh here and there. Very personable and sweet. SLIDES ARE SO HELPFUL AND NEVER SKIP CLASS!
Brilliant professor. He knows the relationship between chemistry and the medical world, listen during class to his connections and explanations! Additionally, he is willing to help, do not be afraid to ask questions or go to office hours.
A professor with many wonderful qualities
Preface: I actually very much like Dr. Horta. I do not really like his teaching style. His lectures felt very rushed - in past chemistry classes we were given problems to work on, talk with our neighbors about, not just put in a number on a clicker. The textbook was lacking(I purchased Wade's Organic Chemistry as a supplement - much more thorough)
Hardworking professor who is truly passionate about teaching. This class is definitely not an easy A, be prepared to get back what you put in.
Professor Horta really knows the material well and if you don't understand it the first time, its easy to contact him and find a time to go over it again. He gives you the resources to do really well in his class and while sometimes its super annoying to do it all, in the end it is usually worth it.
Great teacher, 4 exams plus 1 final. Lowest exam grade gets dropped.
I liked PhyChem1 with Prof. Horta. It's a fairly challenging class, but should be manageable with effort. You don't really need a textbook, but homework problems will link to the text if needed.
I've had other health sci professors I enjoyed, but Dr. Horta surpassed even those. Very concise lectures, incredibly prepared, went thru things quickly but w/ lecture capture it was easy to revisit later &make sure I got everything. Had he not been so eager to make sure students understood, he might've been intimidating - instead he was inspiring.
Dr Horta is awesome but a tough teacher. He's probably one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. If you read and pay attention you'll do fine in his class.
Dr. Horta is a great professor. He is very intelligent and has a great ability to explain hard concepts. Students should be aware that organic chemistry is a class that requires a lot of practice in order to succeed. He doesn't give exams back, but students can always go to his office and review them. BTW he scales exams!!!
Before taking Dr. Horta, I heard that his class was nearly impossible. Since he changed his teaching style this year, I think that his class is reasonable. The tests are fair and the material can be challenging, but if you study hard and go to the review sessions before the tests you will probably do well.
Very smart but teaches above our level of knowledge in trying to explain tougher topics. If you go to class, pay attention, do the homework, go to office hours, go to study sessions, and devote time outside of class to the material then you'll do fine.
Horta is really smart and basically knows absolutely everything about PhyChem but the material is difficult and requires a good amount of effort. Also homework is graded based on correctness versus completion.
This was my second time taking Dr. Horta, and I was really glad I had him again for Phy Chem 2. He is really passionate about the subject and it is evident during class. The concepts can be challenging, but he takes feedback seriously and will alter the course to meet students needs. If you study really hard, you can get an A.
I took Chem 1 with professor horta over the summer. I learned so much from him. His interest in the subject really helped me get into it and want to learn. Every chapter had a quiz and there was one cumulative final. He is pretty laid back and will crack some jokes here and there. I would recommend him to anyone.
I've never been more confused than taking Horta's Phy Chem class. Very lecture heavy, goes way too fast. You must be willing to do a lot of work outside of class in order to understand material. If you aren't prepared you'll feel confused probably 90% of the time.
Best Professor I've had!! He clearly explains difficult concepts, his lectures are just right - challenging but not overwhelming, his ppts can stand alone if necessary, he's quick to respond to emailed questions ANY time of day. The exams test actual understanding of material; so if memorizing answers, you may fall short but he does drop one exam.
PhyChem itself can be difficult, but he does a great job of explaining and helping you if you do not understand something. Only downside is that tests are not taken during class; they're taken on friday evenings, which you are not notified about until class starts so if you have a class during that time or if you work this can be extremely annoying
Horta is a fantastic teacher. The only downside of this class is that tests are given on Friday nights and not in class (which is the same no matter which professor you have for PhyChem) which you do not know about until the first day of class. I'm not sure if this will be the same next year, but just a warning!
Really ruff class, tests are as hard as the concepts, dont miss class.. reading the chapter and PP before class helps a lot. Grades on a curve, DROPs lowest test grade . VERY responsive and fair. answers emails with in the hour (latest within 24hours.)
Dr. Horta is a great teacher, however his classes can be a HUGE pain. I had him for Phy. Chem 1 & 2, and Organic Chemistry. He treats his Organic Chem students like they are PhD students. People CRY because of those classes and the exams. If you're taking classes with him, you have to make his classes 1st priority and everything else comes second.
Phy Chem is a really hard class, but Horta is a good prof. I like having his class instead of a different prof bc he wrote the textbook and writes the tests and quizzes. He is accessible outside of class and wants to help students succeed in his class as long as he notices you're working hard.
PHYCHEM AND ORGANIC MATERIALS ARE HARD TO TEACH IF YOU IMAGINE BEING A TEACHER YOURSELF. BUT HE DOES IT WONDERFULLY AND EFFECTIVELY. HE MAKES SURE YOU UNDERSTAND IT. HE LEFT NO ONE BEHIND. SEE HIM DURING OFFICE HOURS AND YOU WILL SEE A DIFFERENCE. GOOD LUCK!
Dr. Horta is a great teacher! The courses he teaches are hard, to begin with, but he clearly explains the concepts so you can understand them. I've had him for both Immunology and Organic Structures & Reactions and he's always been available for office hours. He also assigns really great books. go to class read to book and you'll be fine!
For someone unsure of who to take for phy chem I would highly recommend Horta. He literally wrote the book from the course so it's easiest to learn from him because he knows the material so well. The material is hard, bc its phy chem, but he does a good job of explaining it and is available for when you have questions.
Phychem itself is a horrible class but Horta makes the class as interesting as possible. Also if you take him the lecture is only two days a week. If you go to his office hours he will help you understand everything.
High production value to class. Excellent ability to explain complex biochem. Will not hold your hand, will let you fail if you don't put he time in-- and you will have to invest a lot of time. For an A, it will come at the opportunity cost of your personal life / sleep / other classes. You will gain a valuable frame of ref if you put in the time.
Had for phychem 1 and 2. Loved him. Hard course made as easy as possible. Definitely a great dude, cares about his students, tries to make long, difficult lecture interesing.
Good professor, but the course is exam heavy and his exams are nearly impossible
Really great teacher. He knows what he's talking about and he wants his students to succeed. He teaches the material in a very clear manner so that the transition from one topic to the next feels natural and overall is not too difficult.
This course is very lecture heavy with some opportunities to answer questions and preform critical thinking. He doesn't use power points very often and writes on the board which I prefer. Classes are small which gives more opportunity to ask questions. Homework is manageable and exams are easy if you study and do the homework.
makes everything extremely difficult, very unfair, take geiger instead
He is nice and passionate about chemistry. I could tell he cared about students and is not one to hold your hand through the course. I am no good at chem, so I guess it was a bad idea to take an accelerated summer course in, but I did anyway. I never truly met him, though, since it was online. I would take him again, but in person. Says mmkay alot.
This man is the worst professor Ive ever had. He seems to not care about his students and makes the material much harder than it needs to be. My high school teacher taught better than Horta. Would not recommend but not many choices
I want to absolutely love him because hes so funny, so nice, and knows literally everything. But, his tests are so hard! He tries so hard for everyone to understand, but hes so intelligent that everything is easy for him to comprehend, so he unintentionally skips/goes through some things that he assumes everyone else understands. :(
Professor Horta is highly intelligent however, he has difficulty translating his knowledge to the beginner student level. He moves extremely fast and doesn't give students an opportunity to grasp the concepts before expecting instantaneous comprehension and moving onto the next topic. Test questions are confusing and he doesn't stick to a syllabus.
I have to say he is the worst professor I have ever had. Out of the many many friends I have in this class, all of us struggle to even get a 70% on quizzes. You can tell that Horta is extremely intelligent but does not explain material well. the slides are not what is on the exams which make it seem like he 110% wants you to fail.
Horta is a smart guy. However, sometimes smart guys shouldn't be teachers. He goes through slides very quickly that by the point that you're about to understand something, he already on the next topic. His quizzes are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT and if you do not go above and beyond in your preparations for his quizzes, YOU WILL FAIL. BEWARE.
His class makes me want to do a double flip off a cliff. He thinks we have 26 hours a day to study for his quizzes. "Class average is near 80 and half of the class has a B or higher" Sir, near? or barely reaching?
Terrible & condescending. First class he scares students out of attending his office hours by saying "Don't come to me unless you've done all your reading, homework, etc". Every other professor I've had welcomes us with open arms. A quiz every other week- very unpredictable in terms of content and length. Would be better off teaching graduates.
You need to work really really really hard and you might do okay. Very heavy in material and quizzes are tough. It is not Dr. Horta's fault the material is so hard and he wants the best for you, but that requires putting in work and then some!
Dr. Horta is fine for lecturing while being a bit boring at times but overall manageable. For his quizzes, he should tone them down a notch in the future since that's what everyone is complaining about. The questions were sometimes worded confusingly and some were unnecessarily complex than they needed to be. Otherwise, he's an alright professor.
This class is HARD. I have never worked so hard in my life and I only got a B. He has office hours and he is willing to help but the class is just hard. I wish he saw that majority of the class has difficulty and change something. he is the kind of teacher where everyone gets it it wrong and goes "im not the problem the entire class is."
I had phy chem with Dr. Horta for both semesters. I learned so much about myself like study habits, working for a good grade. The first semester I struggled and second semesters I sacrificed my weekends to put my time towards learning the material. I don't think students on here realize the work required to succeed in this class. Hard work pays off
Phy chem is an extremely hard class but Dr. Horta does everything possible to make it easier. He might seem a bit intimidating the first lecture or two, but he is very much willing to help and answer questions. He also made multiple changes to the class throughout the semester to boost people's grades and ensure more people passed the class.
As much as PhyChem is a hard class, Horta made it much harder. When the class collectively did badly on quizzes he essentially blamed the students and sent an email telling us to try harder. When I reached out stating I was struggling and had already tried tutoring on top of studying outside class his response was to do those 2 things
Lecture heavy and he makes a lot of adjustments to grades to help more people to pass.
Professor Horta is a very good professor. The material is challenging and you have to pay attention to lectures and take notes in order to understand and do well. However, he is very accommodating. Quizzes scaled.
This class for me was a challenge especially the exams. He really give you all the tools you need it's just a matter of fact of what you do with them. I respect Dr Horta at the end of the day but you really have to work for a good grade. Find friends in the class, seek office hours, go to HUB tutoring. I look forward to Phy Chem II with him.
He is a good professor and approachable
I thought his class was interesting,
Subject itself is hard but Horta helps explain the subject in a nice way. There's lots of homework but it truly does help you understand it. Office hours are recommended, he helps clear things up a lot. He drops lowest of 5 quizzes and usually curved them as well. Read his pp, pay attention, do the hw, and make your own cheat sheets you'll do fine.
Although Horta is a great professor, you really have to work to earn your grade in phy chem. This was by far the hardest class I've taken, I had to prioritize this class above all others. Lots of HW and the quizzes I found very difficult even though you can use a help sheet.
This class is not easy, but if you keep up with the textbook and go to class it is doable. Dr. Horta is understanding and adjusts his teaching to how the class is doing. This class is hard and you will not pass if you do not put in the work.
Great professor wants you to learn and genuinely cares, even if you don't like Physiological chemistry, his great energy will make you like this course.
Overall, Prof Horta was a good professor because he genuinely tries to make a subject as difficult as phy chem as understandable as possible. My only critiques are that the slides can be a little confusing at times and the text book was listed as a mandatory buy, yet most people I know havent used it.
Professor Horta has been my favorite professor this year. He provides many opportunities to practice and test our knowledge by providing homework and practice quizzes. He's also very helpful and open to students' opinions despite some students calling him unapproachable. He graded our exams fairly and in a timely manner.
Professor Horta was my favorite professor this semester. He provided many opportunities to practice and test our knowledge through homework and practice quizzes. He is also very helpful and open to students' opinions and is accessible outside of class. He graded exams in a fair and timely manner and always aimed for helping his students succeed.
It would be preferred if Horta went a tad slower during the lectures. He can go through them rather quick.
This is the single worst professor I've ever had. This class is very difficult as it is, but Horta makes it much more confusing with his teaching style, the labs seem to be thrown together in a sloppy fashion and are not explained well by the lab instructors. Horta has a condescending attitude during lectures, ignore it and go to office hours.
Dr. Horta gets a bad rep, but is genuinely someone who cares. He was very intimidating at first, but introduce yourself and actually have a convo with him. You have to work for your grade. Go to lectures, visit office hours, watch YouTube videos, do the homework, ask questions. Not an easy course, but it's doable.
Professor Horta was great, best I have had. Lectures are great as he doesn't read off a slide but actually teaches the material and goes over lots of practice problems in class. He definitely makes you work for your grade which ensures you learn something from the course, you will appreciate this later on. Overall, great professor and teaches well.
Horta is truly one of the best professors I've had. This class is HARD. Horta is a wonderful guy, awesome professor, and a very caring person to all 200+ of his students. Much respect for this guy tbh. I didnt do great in the class bc it was just so challenging for me even tho I put the effort in, but I walked out learning a lot & im okay w that!
Professor Horta is a very knowledgeable professor. In order to do well in his class, go to lectures and completes homework on time. If there are any questions, go to his office hours, and he is even willing to schedule appointments outside of his office hours. Being organized is key for this class, and taking notes.
Really nice, just a hard course.
Don't take this professor and don't take phy chem unless its a last resort.
I loved attending his class. He's so educated which makes you think everything that'll come out of his mouth will go over your head but that's not the case.. He speaks lay-man to make sure everyone understands. His lectures are the best. Wish he taught Pathophysiology too.
Horta is a very intelligent professor and he knows his stuff. The course material is intimidating and it's not easy, but he cares about his students passing and will make adjustments to the syllabus and grading based off of his students needs. He's very friendly, phy chem is just extremely hard.
Professor Horta was very knowledgeable on the subject and taught the material at a decent pace. However, the homework provided often did not match the complexity you would find on the exams. He was consistent with his office hours and was often very helpful when I attended.
Really tough material, but Horta is a good professor. Nice guy, helpful in office hours, and definitely knows what he's talking about. I found that he kind of reads off the slides and for me personally YouTube videos helped me learn more than class, but I think that is not on him and is more on the material. Solid prof overall.
Great professor, very knowledgeable and cares about his students
no because why was this the hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life. this is going to absolutely destroy my GPA and chances of getting into a decent grad school. the amount of material is too much and i have cried more times than not because of this class. i dont know a single person who is doing well mentally because of this. just no
Phy Chem is VERY challenging and requires lots of studying. It can be intimidating to reach out, but Professor Horta is helpful and responds to feedback well. He also does understands the course is difficult and provides cheat sheets for the exams and makes adjustments to fulfill students needs. Course is very organized.
Professor Horta is very knowledgeable in the subject and is very accessible outside of class. You do have to work very hard to do well in this class, but if you put in the time, getting a high grade in the glass is very doable. I personally did not use the textbook very much, but some may find it useful.
This a very difficult class, and I had to put in more time into this class than I did for any other class. Professor Horta is very knowledgeable in the subject and very caring. The lab however was very poorly organized with instructors that many times did not know what they were doing, or did not give very good instructions.
He would try to make the class interesting and would tell us jokes. The only bad part was that he goes super fast in lecture and over explains everything that can easily be explained in a different way and assumes you know how to do everything 5 seconds after he taught it. He is not that helpful outside of class either.
I liked him a lot. The final was very hard tho and I rly hope he scales it :(
Dr. Horta was a great professor who was very knowledgable about the material. He was very good at explaining and his lecture slides were extremely informative. The book is helpful as a pre Test(he calls them Quizzes) but not necessary for success in the course. If you get confused it's good to go back and read material on the lecture.
Professor Horta is an expert in the field of chemistry. At first, the class seems overwhelming and the homework seems to be excessive, but you will realize that the homework will boost your grade and will help for tests. He is a more than fair grader, and will give great lectures. Don't miss classes, you will regret it. Very smart professor!
Professor Horta is AMAZING. There is no grade for attendance, so much of the your grade will depend on the three exams and the final. There is a project that you're required to do on a topic of your choosing about immunological illnesses/techniques. Do your homework. HW will be your guideline for exams and the finals. Loved clinical immunology.
Professor Horta has a hard time understanding that many of his students are taking their first college chemistry course. He doesn't try to answer questions in depth and quickly moves on if a student says they're confused. His exams are tough and reading the book practice problems (from the book he wrote and makes you buy) is a must to pass.
Professor Horta has a high expectation for students that are not dedicated chemistry majors. It felt hostile to ask questions and he would go through the lectures too quickly. The exams felt more difficult than what was being taught in lectures. Overall, not a great experience in this class.
I had Dr. Horta for Organic Structures and Rxns and Immunology. For both courses, the content is very difficult and he does a decent job. He is a little intimidating when it comes to asking questions but overall he is a nice guy. Rewatching the recorded lectures and doing practice problems is the most effective way to study for orgo.
one of the worst classes i have ever taken. His exams are NOTHING like the homework, practice quizzes or class slides. His wording of questions does not make sense. I really wish i didnt have to take this course. No class has ever made me want to cry and give up like this does. Do your homework and everything to prepare but still fail my exams ...
If you take this class be prepared to put in hours and hours on end of work, you will require tutoring, and the cheat sheets he allows on quizzes take forever to make. You can do all the prep and studying in the world then still do horribly on his exams. Very hard and he teaches incredibly fast with MINIMAL examples. All exam material is worse!
Horta is so nice and very helpful outside of class when needed. However, inside of class he seems very unengaged and his course material is so complicated. There's multiple homeworks every week and then the quizzes are 10x harder than the homeworks and it just seems like the lectures alone aren't doing a good job at getting the material across.
Professor Horta is very smart, organized, and respectful. This class, however, was very difficult because he does minimal things to help students. He teaches everything once, and you are expected to know it. I also did not like how the labs were set up, because some instuctors substancially helped more with exams, while others did not.
I believe Horta has good intentions and is honestly a great teacher. I also understand that he wants us to use critical thinking and deal with unknown problems with the information he taught us. But the tests he gives are completely different and difficult. No matter how much I studied the slides and lectures, the exams felt nearly impossible.
Prof. Horta was honestly a really great and enthusiastic teacher. I took his Org S&R course. I think he is a good person and professor but is meant to teach graduate level students. He is very intellectual and admiring but I think he doesn't necessarily understand that our brains aren't sponges and he goes through the info really fast.
Genuinely the worst professor I've had in both college or high school. I have read the textbook for his courses word for word and he still manages to test outside of it. You aren't allowed to use scientific calculators. He assigns homework and exam questions that are harder than he dares do in class. Only reason he got a 2 is he seems to care.
The class was fast paced & challenging and he managed to make it harder than it already was by not being much help outside of his 3 hour lectures.Whatever part of the 3 hour lecture u don't understand is up to u to figure it out. His classes are the definition of a weed out class. Best Advice to you will be get another professor !
Never had a break from studying, many hw assignments of 20-40 questions of chem problems, exams every week. This is the type of class that requires a really skilled and supportive professor. He is a extremely smart person but he lacks the ability to connect with his students and teach. Most of this course students had to rely on ourselves.
Make sure you have the time and are willing to study. This class is hard but you can do it! I had an okay experience with this professor. He was kind and willing to help. I feel like I could have used some support along with my peers. Best of Luck
I am in therapy b/c of this class with this professor...
Horta is a smart person, but that isn't the question at hand. His ability to teach is another story. If you want to pass in this class you have to look for outside sources, learning from the professor alone is not enough. I have spent many hours studying to get grades that don't reflect that, because he fails to teach what he asks of students.
Dr Horta is great! His lectures and slides make it straightforward to study for tests and for the most part the tests were manageable. Multiple choice can be tricky as I found myself scoring much higher on the free response questions. Professor Horta made learning chemistry much more enjoyable and interesting than what I experienced in high school.
His lectures are too quick and question did not feel welcomed in his class. The exams felt more difficult than what was being taught in lectures. Your grade is majority weighted on his exams. Strongly advice taking this class
If you already know the subject or have background knowledge he would be an ok professor. Otherwise, chose another professor that can support/teach you the material. Would've given him a 0/5 if that was an option. Very snobby & would make you feel stupid for asking questions, moved too fast, his exams were impossible.
worst classes i have ever taken. His exams are NOTHING like the homework, practice quizzes or class slides. His wording of questions does not make sense. He definitely thinks his class is manageable because he is smart and believes students are sponges that absorb everything . He has no general understanding of how to teach. horrible professor
He is smart but has trouble delivering what he knows to students in a way that makes sense. Not the ideal professor unless you already have strong background knowledge on the subject. He is nice & kind so he will help you if asked. Exams were very difficult. Homework was a lot but manageable.
Doctor Horta is a smart man willing to help his student however he can. There is a lot of homework & the tests are very heavy, however if you use the resources provided to you from Dr. Horta you should have no issues in the class.
Class was overall ok. I paid attention and could understand concepts, would spend 1-2 hours on each hw assignment to get a 100, they helped teach material. However quizzes were an unfair evaluation of content, I would feel confident prior to quiz and then feel clueless when taking one, they were 4x harder than the hw and written so sophisticated
Javier Horta is overall a great professor. Students shouldn't be projecting their way of not being able to understand chemistry and onto the professor instead. Horta does his best to explain these difficult concepts and provide many resources to help his students out such as recorded lectures. lecture & homework heavy, use the resources, itll help!
Although this is one of the hardest classes I've taken, Dr. Horta is a good professor and helps out as much as he can. There are two homework assignments a week but this is what helped me actually understand the material lectured in class. Phy Chem is a hard class and it's not the professors fault, he is just doing his job.
Professor Horta is very intelligent professor, but lot of times it does seem that he expects you to have the same amount of knowledge as he does. His quizzes can be confusing, but he is very open to helping students and wants them to succeed. His office hours can be helpful if you go with specific questions.
Dr. Horta is a great professor and shows an abundance of knowledge in Chemistry. This is definitely a hard class but if you pay attention and work hard using the resources provided, you will do well. The weekly homework helps prepare for the tough tests/quizzes. I also recommend utilizing his office hours.
This is a very challenging course so if you are taking it be prepared for a lot of studying. Lectures are not required they are extremely helpful so I recommend going to all of them and being attentive, it will help. There's a lot of homework but they are helpful do them. Prof Horta is very smart so the material is heavy so make sure u are studying
Professor Horta is a great teacher. Class is hard but manageable but his test doesn't truly reflect what we are told to study. I study the points he gives in the back of each chapter and the achieved homework but I find that I go into the exams very confident and come out confused because the exams are so much harder than everything we have done.
Dr. Horta is very knowledgeable in his field and passionate about chemistry however, he is almost TOO knowledgeable to teach students at this level. The class is difficult but if you study and put in the time to learn the material you will do okay in the class. Dr. Horta also has office hours and if you utilize them, you will pass the course.
takes lots of effort but is manageable to receive a good grade if you pay attention during lectures & study in advance for exams. Wording on exams is tricky but there are many office hours & opportunities to talk with him to get topics re-explained. still chances to get a good grade if you do bad on exams, as there are other factors to your grade.
Lots of material at once and homework can be a lot but lectures are posted on blackboard. Some quizzes (they were basically exams) were very hard especially the ones surrounding math problems. A suggestion to him would be to review the questions on the quizzes that many people struggled with after we take them.
He is an intelligent person but he is not the best at helping his class succeed. This class is difficult as expected but he makes it even harder than it needs to be. Despite being able to understand most of the concepts/material before his exams, his quizzes feel unrewarding due to his confusing wording that hardly matched the material presented.
Dr. Horta is very knowledgeable about the subject and paying attention during lectures is crucial. Exams are difficult but if you keep up with homework, review lectures, and use the end-of-chapter questions in the textbook it really helps. Also, homework makes up a percent of the final grade so it is not just exams. Grading of exams was fair.
The professor is an intelligent person and I respect his integrity; however the learning felt unintuitive and I found myself demotivated throughout the course. I felt like I was just trying to survive, even outside of the difficulty of the course. I think a course can be difficult but also intuitive and rewarding, especially during lecture.
Today Professor Horta decided to go over these reviews. A particularly scathing one seemed to upset him and I almost felt bad until he stated that "[He] finds it hard to believe" that a student can disagree with his teaching methods and course structure while still achieving a high grade, thus feeding into the claims of his condescending attitude.
Professor Horta is your only option for Phy Chem I and II which sucks considering that it is a required course for many degree pathways. He seems to be a genuinely nice guy outside of the classroom yet a lot of students find him to be a difficult professor to learn from. He rushes through the material without allowing any time for it to soak.
Professor Horta is a great instructor, the course is very well organized and his guidelines match up with exactly what's in the syllabus. He's caring and very helpful in office hours he even holds them before quizzes so he can answer any last minute questions. He drops the lowest Quiz grade which helps if you didn't understand a particular section.
Are there resources outside of the classroom to help you do well in this course? Yes. Does this course need to be as complex and time-consuming as it is? No. Do petty emails and snide remarks about quiz averages need to be made? No. But this is the reality every phychem student faces and will continue to face with Horta.
Exams/quizzes are not an accurate reflection as to what you learn in lectures or homework. He's confident in what he teaches but has a negative attitude and is condescending when you don't understand in class, making it hard to want to reach out for help outside of class. Overall a very stressful environment and wouldn't recommend unless required.
Dr. Horta is incredibly smart and passionate about the subject. His exams are hard, but because of this, my critical thinking skills are better than before. However, the same goal can be achieved without such a difficult selection of words for the questions, since the class is already hard enough. Do not feel discouraged, if you study you will pass
Prof. Horta is a great professor to have. Your grade in this class is a reflection of the work you put into it. The material is not easy and Horta does his best to help you understand it. He makes time outside his posted office hours and wants you to succeed. The class is test-heavy but the amount of content on each of the 5 quizzes is manageable.
This class is definitely not an easy class but if you attend lecture and go to office hours/tutoring and ask for help it is manageable. The quizzes can be confusing due to the wording but it is a direct reflection of the homework assignments and slideshows shown during class. The grade you receive reflects how much effort you put in to it.
Dr. Horta is a hardworking professor to ensure his students understand and apply chemistry to any field they are going into. He tries is best to help his students understand difficult material through giving a lot of homework for practice. He makes himself available right after his lectures multiple times a week for office hours for his students.
As a nursing major, I do not feel this course should be in our degree pathway as Professor Horta rarely spoke about clinical significance. Professor Horta is intelligent and very well educated on the subject matter, however is unable to explain and relay lessons to students who don't major in Chemistry. This course was horrible to say the least.
Professor Horta may go through lectures quickly but he does record his lectures and posts them after class. He does a decent job at explaining the material, however, with the pace of his class and quizzes, it feels like a LOT of material to cover in a short time. Overall, Phy Chem is hard, so try to find a group of people that can help you study.
his teaching style and how he explains the material can be fast but manageable. He goes through his PowerPoint and posts a recording of the lecture after every class. There are about 2 hw assignments per week. I personally don't think the textbook is necessary to buy if you don't have the money for it. However, you do have to spend for online HW
Horta is a very smart person and is extremely passionate about the subject material. His method of teaching can be hard to comprehend without a previous understanding of chemistry. Be prepared to dedicate many hours to this course + rigorous lab. There are two HW assignments a week and five 50+ question "quizzes" and a Final which is 120 questions.
Horta is a very intelligent professor and is very passionate on the subject at hand. His lectures are very content heavy. The wording of the exam questions can be hard to understand at times. There should be a recitation section where students get a "one on one" experience to ask questions about topics that were hard to grasp during the lecture.
Professor Horta is a good professor who you can tell is passionate about his work. Yes, the course is difficult but that does not define him or who he is as a professor. Chemistry is naturally a hard course, and there's no lie to that but use all your resources. Go to Tutoring, office hours, the hub and etc. And don't be afraid to ask questions.
Professor Horta is a nice guy outside of the class but I dont believe he should be teaching undergraduate students or at least students who are not pre-med. The course asks for too much of your time especially as a nursing student when you should be focusing on idk your actual nursing classes. The fight isn't worth the reward.
Horta NEEDS to realize that he teaches nursing students that have 5 other classes some of which being NURSING classes. I have found myself spending majority of the time of out school studying for his quizzes & HWs more than my classes like nursing which should be higher on my priority list. He is a good prof, but needs to make the class MANAGABLE.
ignore what everyone is is saying, prof Horta genuinely cares about his students success and always remains in contact with them throughout the semester (updating on hw, exams, reviews, etc). the class is hard but not unbearably, just study and if you pay attention in class the hw doesnt take very long.
Professor Horta knows the subject extremely well he is good at explaining the subject its just the course that sucks. The quizzes should not even consider quizzes those are exams. If you dont go to class or pay attention you will fail. The class is extremely hard. Chemistry just sucks. Worse class of this semester. Good luck.
This class takes up a lot of your time and makes it hard to prioritize your other important classes. Going to lectures just to listen and see the examples at least are helpful for the homework but know that tests are not worded / set up the same as the homeworks and tests. "Quizzes" are TESTS!! Overall the class is doable just unfair to your time.
I made the mistake of letting my mental health get really bad this semester. Despite this, and despite not reaching out as much as I should have, Professor Horta did not hold it against me and helped me the best he could. This class is very hard, and if you skip classes and don't make up the material, you WILL FAIL.
Professor Horta! If you are reading this, please please please have mercy on us for this final exam, I know you mean well and are very passionate about what you teach! I am just trying to survive and earn this degree! Yes, this class is tough but it is NOT impossible. For anybody that takes this course be patient with yourself and put in the work!
Dr. Horta should be teaching upper-level chemistry courses, not prerequisite chemistry classes. The amount of material covered in such a short span of time makes it almost impossible to focus on other classes as well. I was also disappointed with an email he sent telling the class to "step up their game" after a 70 average on a hard exam.
This is the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. My Tuesdays and Thursdays will never be the same. Professor Horta is without a doubt smart but expects us to be on the same level of intelligence as him. For your own mental health, please do not take this class unless required.
There is no need for this class. Very difficult and the endless nights of studying and effort put into this course won't reflect on your quiz scores. Very discouraging that all nursing students have to take this course and get withdrawn from the program because of this :( Hopefully something changes soon!
Dr. Horta is a really great professor, and passionate about all the subjects he teaches. The course material is extremely difficult, but he does tell us it will be at the beginning of the semester. He is always available to help go over material because he genuinely wants us to pass, you just have to put in a lot of time and effort. Read the book!!
For someone who's last chemistry course was sophomore year of high school, this course has been EXTREMELY difficult for me. Horta started class as if we all had years of knowledge in the field. Teaches a lot of concepts at once and expects you to master them in a matter of a week. Takes up a lot of energy I could be using for my nursing classes.
This class is perfect for higher level chemistry majors! I don't understand how as a nurse, knowing the geometric configurations of molecules is going to save my patients life. Expect to put a lot of energy in this course and never have to use any of this info in a hospital setting. Ridiculous that this is required for nursing majors.
Say what you will about Dr. Horta, but he is the best chemistry professor I will ever have. His lectures are very fast and packed with info, but as long as you pay attention in class and DONT CRAM-STUDY, youll be ok. To the nursing majors, you will thank yourself for taking this class when you're taking your grad-level orgo class for CRNA school.
An amazing professor! He taught the toughest class I've ever taken, but it was 100% worth every minute of studying. His classes guide you well enough to understand miles ahead of similar classes. He is witty and knows his stuff better than most professors. If you're up to a challenge, taking his class is something you won't regret.
I have not learned anything in this class point blank. I do not see how any of this pertained to nursing, it did nothing but stress me out more. I took this class fall + spring semesters and since the beginning of spring Ive been burnt out and it's progressively gotten worse, all because of this class. It took time away from my meaningful classes.
I really want to give Dr. Horta the benefit of the doubt because one day I might be thankful I took this class. He is an extremely intelligent professor but the material is far from easy. His class made me feel like a failure and made me question my ability to be nurse. I put all my effort in this class instead of nursing and now I'm burnt out.
I loved Professor Horta! He taught the hardest chemistry class i have ever taken, but he is an amazing professor. He is passionate about his subject and extremely helpful in office hours. I had to put in a lot of work for this course, but I am grateful for Professor Horta.
Dr. Horta is very intelligent and certainly cares about what he does but it is a lot of content with little time to master it, especially while taking other classes. It is extremely hard to do well in this class because the only grades are hw and quizzes. It would be better if we had assignments where we apply our knowledge (case studies, etc)
He started this course by saying this is the hardest course we will ever take in out undergrad. This held to be true but he did not reiterate how many hours we would spend in this class just to get a passing grade, how much time it would consume, all the tears and ultimately causing many people to have to switch majors. do not take this class.
This class is going to test your abilities, so rise to the challenge and CONQUER THEM BABY. You might have to skip going out sometimes to study, boo hoo. Did you forget why you're here? Dr. Horta is one of the best professors I've had. His exams test your knowledge in the course to a tee. Put in the work and you'll excel. Thank you, Dr. Horta!!
Dr. Horta is an extremely intelligent man. His tests are very hard but you can tell he just wants to share his knowledge with the class! Homework is 30% which is a great boost to your grade! This class is TOUGH but chemistry is difficult course overall! I will definitely use information I learned in the nursing field!
Dr. Horta is a great professor. This class is extremely difficult, so I wouldn't recommend if you don't need it. If you do, pay attention to lectures, and take time to really learn the concepts. Memorization will not get you anywhere for exams, you have to apply knowledge. Dr. H is a very generous grader.
Dr. Horta is clearly very very very intelligent - and has taught me a great deal of information. However, I think it is a struggle to take away the pieces of information on topics that he is talking about and apply them to the assignments and the exams. The exams are rather tricky, and almost feel puzzling. He is easy to get a hold of.
Mr screwed us over the week before finals with an exam and two homework assignments, instead of letting us study for the final exam. Other than that, he is alright. I cant say anything bad about him, he knows his stuff. You just need to put in the work and you will be fine.
He's a great professor and made clinically immunology very interesting to learn about. However, this class was quite hard and there's a lot of information every lecture. The exams are very lecture heavy and there are a lot of questions. If you study you should be good for this class specifically.
Prepare for a lot of homework!
To be honest Dr. Horta wasn't as bad as he is made out to be in other ratings. He is a very smart man and you can learn a lot from him. His lectures are kind of confusing at first but if you do the HW and rewatch the lectures you should be fine.
Immuno was a good course. He is lenient & really does try his best to help (study guides on exams, scaling, low-weighted exams, project). The exams can be tough and content-heavy, but I really recommend the textbook as it helped with answering the study guide questions (which then helped with exam questions). Overall, I recommend him.
Do Not Take this class Dr.Horta is not an approachable professor. He is very passive aggressive. You should take chemistry, there are more options to choose from for a professor. He is the only professor for this class which sucks but that is life. Good Luck!
I audibly gasped at how many 5's this man had. what are y'all on. He's funny but don't be fooled, this man does not help you succeed. He definitely prides himself on being one of the hardest classes. one of my biggest pet peeves about this class is homework is one attempt for accuracy. one time homework literally brought my grade down. Good luck!
Dr. Horta is great. He is very intelligent and gives good lectures. The assignments and exams are very difficult but they are fair. The lectures are recorded, which is extremely helpful. Read the textbook, take good notes, and rewatch the lectures! The content in this class challenging but it is so valuable.
Professor Horta is good, I would take him again, he is willing to help during office hours if you are struggling. The amount of tears I shed during the two semesters I took phychem could have recreated the Merrimack river. Nothing is scaled unfortunately since it's a weeder for nursing.
I took chemistry in the summer even though it was not my strong suit. Overall, he was pretty good. Exams were hard and lectures were hard to keep up with sometimes, but he was very helpful when I went to his office hours a lot. He is also generous with grading which is good.
I took Doctor Horta for Phychem I & II. He himself admits that the class can be difficult, but he does an amazing job explaining the material and supporting students who need more clarification. I highly enjoyed attending his lectures as he is both very knowledgeable and also entertaining to listen to. If you put in the effort, you will succeed.
Dr. Horta really doesn't deserve a lot of the backlash he gets. Yes, his class requires a lot of hard work that you have to be ready to tackle, but he really tries his best to present the material in a clear way. I also think he's a very intelligent man who loves to teach and he is hilarious. Give the guy some credit, he is not out to get you!
Dr. Horta is a very caring professor but I hope to never take this class again
HE DOES NOT READ EMAILS AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT STUDENTS. Don't bother selecting him as a professor.
I don't know why Dr. Horta himself has bad reviews. Just because the class is hard doesn't mean he is a bad professor. Is the class extremely difficult? Yes. But everyone saying he doesn't care about his students is wrong. He is very understanding and gives you the materials you need to help you succeed. If youre struggling, tell him. HE WILL HELP.
Dr. Horta is a very intelligent professor and expects effort from his students. Weekly homework is given as well as 4 exams. The amount of time you have to complete homework can vary but if you don't do them, you will fail the class. Dr. Horta provides very detailed questions to help understand the material, but I think he should give more work.
Hard grader and will absolutely not give second chances, extra credit or assignments. Get ready to study a whole ton. My issue is only having 2 attempts at the weekly homework assignments, I genuinely don't know what's up with that. With how difficult the tests are, I wish we were at least given one more attempt to do the homework. It's homework.
If you can take someone else take someone else.
Dr. Horta is one of the brightest in his field and genuinely cares about the success of the student. If you apply yourself, really listen, STUDY, and ask questions, you will pass his class. If you are not serious about your education, you will fail and it will NOT be his fault. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! It will save you.
Dr. Javir Horta is an amazing professor who genuinely cares about his students. His study guides are well-organized, his slides are clear and helpful, and he records his lectures, which makes reviewing much easier. While his exams are challenging, they are fair and reflect the material covered in class. He's also very humble and approachable
The course is quite challenging and requires effort, but the professor is excellent. He is highly responsive to emails and often replies within minutes. The professor is knowledgeable and communicates the content effectively. Ultimately, your success depends on the effort you put in.
DONT DO IT TO URSELF.
No matter how hard you prepare, the exams will leave you frustrated and defeated. The stress this class causes is just not worth it. Between the unclear lectures, impossible tests, and nonstop pressure, it's one of the worst academic experiences I've ever had.
RUN RUN AND RUN!!!! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He has not once responded to one of my emails but those who have received a response faced heavy criticism, sass, and sarcasm (and not in a fun way). If you respond in class he is absolutely rude in his comments back, and don't get me started on the exams. 50 questions in 50 mins with 5 being mathematics based? Save yourself from the stress and RUN
His exams felt like his anger being taken out on us or some weird hazing/ bullying method. Absolutely terrible 0/10 would not recommend him to anyone. Stay away from anything tainted with his name on it.
all you need to know is that it's Horta K.
Worst professor I have ever had. His class is 50 minutes, and he makes his exams 50 questions with math open response questions, and it is nowhere near enough time. He words his exams so confusingly and makes his class purposefully difficult. Exams are impossible to do good unless you know every detail in and out.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. The lectures are unclear, the notes on the board are messy scribbles, and the tests are extremely difficult. We only get 50 minutes to complete them, which is totally unrealistic. It feels like we're being set up to fail rather than actually learn.
This class is a nightmare. The teacher's lectures make no sense, the board is just messy scribbles, and every test is ridiculously hard. Giving us only 50 minutes is insane — no one can finish in time. It feels like the teacher doesn't care if we pass or even understand the material.
says his class makes or breaks you for your major. purposely makes exams extremely hard study guides are not helpful or lectures he just writes all over the board and is extremely hard to understand anything hes doing on the board. overall rude professor and talks down to us in class. gets mad when we dont answer question bc we dont understand.
This required class is awful. The amount of material is insane, it's like a whole semester crammed into one. The lectures are confusing, the study guides make no sense, and nothing is organized. HOrta should not be teaching a required course
Has potential to be a great professor but isn't humble enough to make adjustments. Class is SO bad, he is happy about a D being the exam average and less than 30% of the class getting an A or a B. We aren't even given enough time to finish exams, which is the bare minimum. I don't know what his plan is but I hope he has the best interest in us.
This is by far my favorite class and professor! Cannot even begin to say enough good things about Dr. Horta!
not understanding whatsoever, expects you to prioritize his class and his class only. extremely tough exams and doesn't prepare you well…
Definitely a difficult course, but I would recommend taking him as your professor. If you put in the time and effort and go to his office hours if you are struggling you will succeed.
I've taken 3 courses with him prior to this one. The course load is very lecture heavy but the material on the exams directly match concepts from the both the study guides and slides. He's actually very reasonable and considerate even with make up exams. Some of the rating on here don't accurately represent him or what i've experienced in class.
This class was very content heavy, however he does a good job explaining every topic and clarifies any confusion during the lecture. His exams are typically much easier than the homework and prepares you well for each exam. I would definitely take another course of his again!
overall a great professor and interesting class. honestly not difficult at all if you are interested and put the work in. would definitely take again!
Nursing chem is very difficult and content heavy however if you put in the work you will succeed. It's not the professors fault the difficulty of the course and he scaled some exams and wanted to see students succeed in the end
Dr. Horta, is a caring professor. Clinical Immunology exams are rigorous and specific. However, its manageable if you take the time to study the lecture videos and check off the important subjects from the study guide that he provides. That and doing well on the online homework, participation, and the special project also help boost your grade.
