His class was a total waste unless you're looking to slide
Great teacher! Always willing to answer questions and help students.

Nice guy - easy class
Nice guy; good teacher.
This prof is very friendly and very learned. Classes are easy if you read and pay attention. Don't skip class; but you can probably get away with it.
Oustanding Professor--very nice guy, very knowledgeable! His class is both informative and enjoyable
very heavy work load, he is an easy grader, and tells all before test, but beware of all the out of class work that this class entails. you will get very familiar with the st.mary's law library. great prep for law school.
Super easy...and great prof

smart and funny and fair. I would highly recommend this professor, you will learn a lot.He is good at relating t the students, everyone loves him
Easy, but must do the readings. Very smart, funny, and classes are very interesting
He is a really funny guy who makes a great proff. you really do need to read and come to class, but it's an easy a. hilarious stories. very sarcastic!
Nice Guy. Okay Professor, because he generally is un-prepared for class, but I'm sure this is a hard subject to get excited about. Waists a lot of time talking about un-related junk. Cancels class alot and doesn't use WebCT so you end up waisting a trip to school for nothing. He tries his best.
IF U GO TO CLASS & PAY ATTENTION U WILL GET AN A! i love this teacher, very nice, gives extra credit papers, doesnt make class boring. he & his wife are both lawyers w/ 3 boys, so he did cancel class a few times, nice break for us. Olivia may be more prepared if UTSA would give him an office...give him a break...we need more teachers like this!
This guy is one of the best! I have had four classes with him and each one was better than the last. He keeps you interested by interjecting his real world legal experience in to the law curriculum of the course. If you are interested in the law, take his courses.
Great professor. He will do his best to help you succeed. As a practicing attorney, he brings with him alot of real-world experience. He gives both sides of the story (liberal/conservative). As long as you do the work-and sometimes it's alot of work-you will not have any trouble.
Oliva has great ratings because of how easy his class is. The class is basically a lecture on liberalism. "Be nice to everyone, look inside yourself, accept diversity, the welfare state is wonderful, blah blah blah" He even grades liberally...I was angered by the fact that he raised people's grades when I had worked to earn my A, not a hand out!
Proff Oliva is does not hand out A's! I have had him for three classes, and I have had to study to get my grades...he did drop the lowest test grade this semester, but who cares? about half my teachers do that! Each class has had 2+ text books that do require A LOT of reading - read & go to class...isnt that what college is about?
he is awesome, he always gives full credit for essays and his class is an easy A! He is really good, and gives extra credit ops, take advantage, and just really go to class in the days leading up to the review. he is an awesome prof, i seriously reccomend him.
I wouldn't care about him raising people's grades if I wasn't competing against them for law school admission.
Mr. Oliva is one of the best professors I've had. He might cut some slack to some people who need it, but any one who thinks his class is an easy A doen't know what they're saying. If attend class, study, and read the books then you will get an A. If you don't do those things and your grades will reflect the level of effort you put in to the class.
NOT an easy A- must go to class. Understands that students have other classes besides his (which is hard to come by.) Gives reviews before tests. Funny guy.
Awesome professor!! I LOVE this class!!!!
Awesome man/teacher. He really cares about the students and helps as much as he can. I've really enjoyed this class because of him!!
Go to class, Read the books, learn the material. Do these three things in Professor Oliva's classes and you will do well. He is one of the best professors at UTSA.
I loved this class. He made it fun.The tests werent hard at all as long as you try going to class everyday. The reading wasnt bad. And the cases were really interesting. OverAll hes an excellent professor. I recomend taking all the classes he teaches. He makes pol sci easier and fun.
Best teacher I've ever had! He makes learning fun, the subject interesting, and he always tries to get students invovled. He is very helpful and understanding of students needs and time. I took him for 3 classes and wish I could take all my classes with him. Just go to class and don't slack off and you will do great.
Useless. I could have read the books myself. He just lectures directly from them. Tests are easy, just do the reading and show up for test reviews. Nice guy and tries to be funny. not much of an actual teacher though.
He's the best at UTSA. He sticks to the course material, and cares about every student's success. Any one interested in learning the law will enjoy his mentoring. Going to class and reading the book is a necessity, but worth the investment. His direction helped lead me to where I am today, my first year in law school. Thanks Professor Oliva!
This professor is the type of teacher that slacker students deem to be 'good' when the reality is far different. He is a slacker teacher, who is not into teaching at all, which is evidenced by the fact that he is typically checking his e-mail at the podium computer and could care less about your questions. Easy 'A'? Sure. Great Teacher? Hardly.
Professor Oliva is a great teacher who really cares for his students and brings one of the best personalities a teacher could bring to the classroom! Oliva will also provide individuals will a foundation in legal studies necessary for those interested in law. Oliva is a great person, an amazing teacher, and an asset to the UTSA community!
Prof. Oliva is a great teacher, he is extremely knowledgeable and knows a lot about the law. As long as you come to class and pay attention to his lectures, you will do fine. Plus you obviously have to do the readings. His summaries are very helpful and if you have any questions he is very approachable.
I took oliva for lawand society as well as the upper division course the american legal process. the tests are challanging and you must study the material in order to get an a. Great techer, presents the information clearly. good sence of humor as well. highly reccomended if you dont mind studying.
I loved loved this professor, hes just really cool to listen to hes quirky!! And fun, hes not one of those up tite teachers hes willing to work with you. I recomend any class he teaches hes THE BEST!!
He is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. It is important to study for his classes...his true/false can be tricky sometimes. He is a great guy, very understanding, and you can really tell that he likes what he does. I took 3 classes with him and I would take more if I could!!!
fun teacher, knows a lot about the subject, test are mostly essay but are easy if you read the slightest bit.
This professor is awful. He canceled 5 classes this semester, took 3 weeks to return tests, and got so far off the syllabus that it ended up being useless. He grades by essays and a research paper on a film. Does NOT use WebCT. If you're looking for an easy A without mandatory attendance, take him. If you wanna learn something, look elsewhere.
Fairly easy legal class. Never bought all the textbooks and still carried an A. Professor has a definite passion for what he does. I would love to take his other classes
I took him for two classes back to back, heard the exact same jokes twice a day. Oliva is okay. He explains exactly what you will be tested on. Legal Research is boring and time consuming...
His class is really easy and really boring. You won't learn anything from his class, you have to teach yourself. Has easy essay exams and one essay over a film. He'll go off topic a lot and ramble. An easy A for anyone looking for an easy way out.
I highly recommend Professor Oliva for any student interested in pursuing a career in the legal field. He makes a great effort to get to know his students. He does not take attendance however, you must go to class and learn the material (not memorize) in order to do well on his tests. Tests are a combo of m/c, short essay, and t/f.
The key to an "A" in the class is... read the assigned material and show up to "most" of the classes. That simple.
One of the best professors at UTSA, he works hard to make sure all the students are understanding the content and explains things in a real life scenario type way. Very entertaining too, wish all my classes had him as the professor!
His test for this class is all short answer and essay, their is nothing easy about this class at all, i hated it. I suggest if u take 16 hours don't take him to much reading.
no textbook required. he is very animated during class and is very helpful to students. is a practicing attorney. tests are half multiple choice and half short answer. you need to study but he is very fair with his grading. i woudl take him again!
Professor Oliva ROCKS. Easy-going, his grading is Pass/Fail for assignments, and tests are right from his lectures and hints. Easy "A" if you give it a moderate effort.
Professor Oliva is wonderful. He is a really nice guy. He always has something interesting to say, and he helps you learn all the material. Definitely take him at least once!
I was unimpressed. For an introductory course in legal studies, Oliva is disorganized. Book in syllabus isn't the book we needed and the low stakes assignments take too much time. Syllabus wasn't updated to reflect grade allocation leading to a surprise ending. Unimpressed! I would not recommend taking if you learn from being taught.
Second time take Oliva. He is very helpful and straight forward. You have to pay attention in class! I had yet to meet someone who didn't like him as a person: he's really nice.
Oliva is one of the best professors I've ever had. 4 tests from the book/his reviews and a final, doesn't expect too much from a student, attendance optional. Oliva knows how to keep his classes entertained. If you are an aspiring attorney, any of Oliva's classes are the perfect fit. Love this guy
He is a great guy! I had a lot of fun in his class and he keeps us entertained! His class is difficult but if you take bits and pay attention you will be successful!
Read the book extensively! His reviews are horrible, Read the Book, he his textbook heavy! Don't rely on him for a review, the Review and the Test will be VERY different! You can make an A as long as you read the book and take major notes. Teaching he only reads from the book!If you are taking the class read the BOOK now! All 3 test essay format
This was my first time taking Olivia and I was very disappointed. In the Pol3013 he cancelled class almost once a week and sometimes at the very last min. In both classes the Reviews were useless, most of his lectures consisted of him reading from the book. In LGS3013, when the class presented our group project he was on the phone the whole time.
Professor Oliva is a great professor. He is very insightful and knows what he is talking about. His test aren't easy but if you study you should do fine. His group project wasn't too hard. Although he canceled class at various times and didn't pay too much attention to our presentation he is overall a good professor.
Professor Oliva really makes the concepts involved in the class easy to understand by attributing them to real life situations. The little bits of humor also lend a hand in staying captivated and not drifting away from the topic. All in all if one is able to pay attention and use the book for reference , there is no reason why an A isn't attainable
Professor Oliva is one of the nicest teachers you'll meet at UTSA. He's genuinely interested in his students and their future careers. His lectures can be confusing (he has a tendency to go on tangents) but the assignments are generally graded easily. Would definitely recommend.
Professor Oliva's tests are very tricky. Plus his reviews aren't very helpful and he was usually not available during his office hours.
I've taken Oliva for 3 classes because his classes are an easy A- however he does cancel class a lot, but I didn't mind most of the time. He's nice and approachable, and you can learn a lot from him. I recommend him to anyone interested in law school.
Took Oliva for two classes in the same semester. He tends to go on tangents and just CONSTANTLY talk about his personal life, and gives poor reviews for his tests. The essay tests were easy and open book, but his multiple choice he gave was hard because of his poor lecturing skills and review. Overall very unhappy. He canceled class all the time.
Oliva is by far my favorite professor I've taken. He has a genuine want to help all his students. However, you must read the assigned reading because he does have a tendency to go on tangents in class. All around good guy and an easy A if you work for it.
Good Teacher, good experience, there was a lot of reading but for a legal studies class, it is expected. I would take him again.
He's alright as a person, but he seems a little strange. As far as a teacher goes, its super book heavy. If you're like me and you learn from being taught, then he's not the professor for you, most of the stuff you'll learn in the class is from the book. He's not a heavy grader or anything but he just doesn't teach much.
His tests are all T/F, multiple choice (3-5 choices) and free response. He typically gives reviews which is the only way to pass the tests. He tells you to read the book, but that won't give you a passing grade because he writes his own tests (usually cover over 100 pages of the book) Assignments seem to be busy work and graded easily.
Hearing his insight is especially great when thinking about becoming an attorney. If you need time off because of work don't worry not mandatory for attendance. Ended up taking two more classes with him after this course. He does go off topic at times just as long as you pay attention in class you will do fine.
Easiest POL prof at UTSA. No attendance mandatory, 4 exams, and 1 paper assignment - easy af. Show up to class one meeting before each exam and he'll spoon-feed you what's going to be on it. Don't bother with either of the textbooks. "Extra-credit" is available but beware: I've taken him twice and he never actually keys it in for your final grade.
He's a lot tougher for the summer law academy than he is in the fall/spring semesters. Attend class as much as possible, read the cases carefully, and study hard for the exams bc he is a meticulous grader. He's funny and really helpful if you want to become an attorney. This class will give you a good survey of what to expect in law school.
If you're thinking about going to law school or being a lawyer some day, you absolutely need to take this class with this guy. He tells you all the ins and outs of law school and practicing law that you can't get anywhere else. The tests are multiple choice but he gives study guide and if you go to class you'll understand. Final exam was open note.
Hes really sweet and genuinely cares about his students. His classes are pretty great i took a intro class but have had him for many other classes.
All around a very stellar professor who teaches to prepare students for their careers postgraduation, and for graduate school. I've enjoyed all the classes I have taken from him.
Really looks for the perfect paper for a 100. Other than that super easy going, he explains everything concise and passionately, makes sure you have a concrete understanding and concepts just flow through your head. Just listen to his lectures, read up, and participate A
Had him for three courses and his courses are pretty easy if you read the lectures.
Many exam questions were poorly worded. Minimal participation from the Professor; delayed or absent email responses, promised reviews that were never posted, and inconsistencies with the syllabus and materials due to them being recycled from his past courses. The exams are "easy" and minimal participation required but an A+ is basically impossible
The number of times that I cried in this class were not normal. The tests gave me anxiety because of how poorly worded they were. Pass the class so you never have to take him again. Never responds to emails. Its not impossible to pass the class it can be an easy A but I just did not like the way he ran the class. Seemed to not really care.
Ive taken Oliva nearly every semester of college. Hes a chill guy who cares about his students, hes great to ask questions about the law profession. He wont respond to emails, but he will respond to texts. His courses are easy and hes not a tough grader. Im sad I wont be taking him for my last semester, I highly recommend his courses.
Professor Oliva is nice enough as a person but as a professor he is okay. It is stressful like one poster has stated. He is very test heavy and most of it comes from reading the texts. Prepare to read a lot. Usually grades are like 3 exams + final and a paper. He does look for a perfect paper so have a tutor read your paper first. Nice guy though.
I wouldn't say his class is stressful at all, so I'm kinda confused by the other reviews. He doesn't give feedback though, so that is definitely something to think about. An A is achievable with avg effort, but if you do not buy the book or watch the lectures then that's on you. Attendance is not mandatory, but you should still tune in.
4 exams and 1 paper for the semester, which isn't bad. Does not give feedback when grades are given, so you are left guessing what you need to work on and it takes him a while to submit grades so you don't really know where you stand. Currently sitting at an A- minus in his class, still missing grades. I would not recommend this professor.
Class was okay. Professor did not show up to class multiple times and difficult to reach out to. I wish there was more posted on blackboard regarding overall topics learned.
Professor Oliva is great. He is a great reference for students wanting to pursue law school so I recommend keeping in touch with him after graduation. I enjoyed the readings in this class and the material is very important.
Professor Oliva is extremely understanding and easy to reach! Class is not too hard. 1-2 assignments every week + 3 total exams. Reading and understanding the material is key!!! Overall amazing professor.
Professor Oliva is pretty easy-going with his class. I liked that his class was not too heavy on homework and for the most part, he was good about preparing students for exam day. Only gripe was some of the materials were a little expensive for a class that's mostly online, but besides that, take this professor if you're looking for a lax course.
Class was ran well and I appreciated that lectures were recorded and posted online. Professor Oliva was generally really fair and generous with his exams and there was not a lot of homework, making this one of the best courses I took for the semester. Definitely recommend taking his classes if you haven't already.
One of the most boring professors i've ever taken. His tests are lazy. His lectures are lazy. He reads from slides and has 0 enthusiasm. He also will not budge at all when confronted with complaints about test questions. If you have trouble paying attention or if you have the ability to think critically, I recommend you take another class.
Great class, I can't wait to take another class with him
