He is new and is still figuring out how to do things (i.e blackboard, clickers) I think he likes to hear himself talk (he gets off topic), and includes things in lecture that are not in the book. His exams always have errors in it that he has to waste time to correct, but they mainly focus on lecture material. Its hard, but do-able with max effort.
He is a nice and funny guy but you have to study. Just put some effort.
He's new and figuring out how to use BB, clickers, etc. Approachable + really nice. Exams (mix of multiple choice, T/F, matching, and free response) were fair as long as you do the study guide. Timed Quizzes on BB every week; make sure you read all of the articles/listen to all talks prior to starting the quiz or you will run out of time.
Worst professor ever! Hes disorganized and confusing. Makes the class harder than it should be. Awful TA. The assistant TA, Juan, was excellent! I got an A in 300L but ended getting a C in 303L because I quickly lost interest in the class because of Rivera. He refused to give me extended time for the final exam, for which I qualified. Awful person
This was Professor Rivera's first year at UMBC, so keep that in mind. As a lab professor, he was alright. I appreciate his willingness to explain his lab rules thoroughly and caringly. Quite a few things were ambiguous. MAKE SURE YOU READ HIS SYLLABUS. After a certain lab, you don't have to copy every single protocol into your lab notebook.
His exams are not relevant to the material. His exams are a combination of multiple choice questions, free response, T/F. I didn't enjoy his class at all. I lost interest in the material. Sometimes he would come to class exhausted not really willing to teach. He has attitude and doesn't really teach the material. His homework is irrelevant to class
Do not take this class with this "professor" if you can. He is one of the worst lecturers I have had at UMBC. He loves to hear himself talk and show the class how "smart" he is. He talks really fast and doesn't clarify himself when you ask a question. He says you just should have paid attention. Sorry. I can't pay attention when you are rambling.
Good luck taking this class with this guy. While the subject matter is interesting to me, the way the professor teaches is for lack of a better word... "schizophrenic." His lectures are all over the place, he talks too fast, and his course structure is disorganized. He loves to hear himself talk. This course is tough and exams are tedious.
Professor Rivera-Guzman cares deeply about the learning experience of students. All lectures included supplemental information to provide real-world context for lessons. Grading criteria is made explicitly clear, and he makes every effort to communicate with students. Reading and diligence will ensure a satisfactory grade; there are no tricks here
While he's fairly a good lecturer and encourages engagement in the subject and thinking, he talks too fast so it's hard to grasp understanding. Easy for him to explain but he can't pace well enough for students. Lecture is very important to go to if you want to pass, and the workload is immense. He's new so he deserves a chance.
Been to many universities, still cant teach right. Talks too quickly, even hear foreign students ask neighbors to clarify because he trails off/mumbles. Only attended lectures so I knew what sections of the book to read later. Used slides from the book, not his own. Long time to post slides, recorded lecture but didnt always post. Hated the class
He does not make this boring subject any better. Lecture is pointless as he reads right off the slides, goes so in detail that he moves too fast to take notes or to take in what he is saying. You are essentially expected to memorize the textbook for exams with averages in the 50s and 60s. Discussion and the group project are both pointless.
I got a B in this class, first B in any bio class I've taken, and I've worked the hardest I've ever worked for this. That's how bad he is. His exams are very detail oriented, you will have to study THOROUGHLY because he covers almost EVERYTHING. Apart from that, you choose your group in discussion, choose them well. They have a good share in my B
Lectures were pointless because he lectured too fast and read off slides. Only went to lectures because he started asking questions in discussion quizzes about specific things in lecture when he noticed attendance dropping. Didn't reply to emails. Mistakes every exams. Pointless poster project with little direction. Lack of respect for students.
He is a great professor, very approachable, fair grader, super understanding and gives great feedback. For 400 level class, the material covered was reasonable and fair. He is very enthusiastic, and is a great lecturer! I would love to take another class with Dr Guzman!
Lectures and power-point presentation were really useful for me when I was studying for the MCAT. Very approachable and a very fair person. If you are looking to take this class as a requirement for MED school and prep for the MCAT you should seriously consider taking his class. The info presented in class was really helpful.
Dr. Rivera-Guzman is the best biology professor at UMBC. He will definitely make you work hard for your grade, but he will also motivate you to strive even harder! Make sure to stay on top of readings and ask him questions. I highly recommend going to his office hours for any kind of help. He is the best! My favorite professor ever!
He made the class super fun! Would love to take his class again!
One of the best at UMBC. I took cell lab with him over the summer which is often a dreaded course at UMBC but he made the class great. He is passionate about bio and so young making him relatable and approachable. I am taking biochem this upcoming semester as a non-degree seeking student since I finished my dual degrees this summer semester.
BIOL 430 in Fall with Rivera is strongly not recommended. I have 3.74 GPA but got C in his class. No clear grading. No clear syllabus. Always off track on teaching.
No clear slides. Gives exam 1 grades a day before exam 2 and exam 2 grades a day before exam 3, so that people don't know what to study. Average grade was around 60s. No clear grading rubric on free response. Deducts points even if you gave clear answer, because HE IS THE FINAL AUTHORITY. Late to his office hours on a regular basis. PLEASE AVOID.
My least favorite part of this class were the quizzes. It seemed that he always asked about the most specific irrelevant details. He also made use of the entire 4 hour class time almost every lab. The labs themselves weren't entirely difficult and he tried to make the class interesting. It is clear though that he does care about his students.
worst professor at UMBC. avoid him at all costs. Pretty sure the only good reviews on here are most likely written by himself. There is no way anybody gave this guy 5 stars.
Worst professor at UMBC. No idea why UMBC would hire him. If you have an EXCUSED absence with documented proof, you aren't allowed to make up the weekly quiz (20pt) -you will receive a zero on it. He doesn't reply to emails, is incredibly rude to students, and is the most conceded man i've ever met - "my word is final even if i'm wrong" kinda guy.
Professor Rivera-Guzman does not teach well. He tries to show off his "genius" by talking really fast and chastising you if you ask "dumb" questions. No question is dumb. We are trying to learn here. He is incredibly arrogant and a difficult grader. His students at his previous school (Wagner College) have left similar comments about him as well.
Avoid taking with Dr. Guzman and only take it if you can afford to spend 80% of your studying time on this class. Do quizzes in groups. Make sure your discussion group absolutely rocks the poster proj (10% of your grade). Exams are HARD and basically need you to memorize every word in the textbook. Cell bio is hard, but Guzman makes it worse.
professor makes class much harder by being disorganized, he tends to start the lecture by rambling about random things we dont need to know then towards the end realizes hes running out of time and tries to fit a whole load of info in before the class ends. Gives no clear exam study guides and exams have things not covered on them.
Read the book and memorize every number and example given because exams will have random things mentioned once u wont remember. Exam averages were 58-60 range. Studying for final atm and no clue what to study, no guide given, told there will be excerpts from scientific articles that we dont get before the exam and asked to read and apply knowledge
Javier is the worst biology professor at UMBC. He explained each topic in the simplest way possible and most it was basic knowledge attained from general bio courses. His exams were impossible. None of his questions are clear and when you ask him to explain, he is dismissive. There were often errors in his grammar and he put irrelevant passages.
This course at UMBC was not taught well by this professor. He was dismissive of students concerns on the vague tests that required very specific answers to tricky questions. He loves to ramble and talk and doesnt like it when students ask questions. He said our questions were dumb or that we were not paying attention. We are here to learn.
Dr. Rivera Guzman is a hard but fair professor. You have to put your time into the course, you have to read the text, and you need to clearly communicate with him. He is very bright and extremely student-centered, spending many hours outside of class assisting students. He looks out for the underdog. I'd take any class he teaches!
The worst professor at UMBC. He gives no clear guidelines on what exams will entail, he just says "read the textbook." His exam questions are not conceptual based like in genetics, but entail memorizing every detail in the textbook and every word he says in lecture. He takes days to post lecture slides after class and is very disorganized.
This class makes me want to change my major entirely, I would rather take organic chemistry over and over again than to take this class even one more time
Not really all that different from the other biology professors here. He gets a lot of flak because the class is tough and it's easier to blame him. As long as you go over lecture slides and pay attention in class it's not too tough.
Do not take this class under any circumstances if you want to keep a good GPA. He can not clarify the topics, and he is super rude when you reach out to him for help he will only make you feel stupid.
I took cell bio lab with Dr. Rivera. It was more fast-paced than I had anticipated, but I learned so many important theories and skills that I am still using today. His classes may be difficult but you can rest assured that he is teaching you crucial information to be successful as a future scientist. If you are sincere in your efforts he will help.
From what I heard from other students, Dr. RG was not as bad as I was expecting. His lectures are clearer and his tests are more fair, although he still gives test questions based on lecture specifics which is annoying. The best advice I can give is to use his lectures as a guide for reading the book, do that and you'll probably be fine.
Dr. Rivera is very passionate about his teaching. His exams are hard. He makes you work for Cell lecture and Lab. I think it is supposed to be like that. Everything I learned during his Cell lecture and Lab is embedded in my brain and I believe this would help me on my MCAT. He trains real cell biologist. He is a hardcore and caring instructor.
My advice is to take this class with any other professor. Absolutely horrendous. The professor is not very organized, therefore the lecture slides, lecture, project, and even discussion classes are not organized. It took 3+ weeks for the tests to be graded and updated. The class average for test grades was 59% (out of 200+ people). Avoid him!
Took Bio 425 over summer. Only opened the book twice. Anyone can get an A as long as you pay attention in class, review your notes, and participate
Do not recommend. Not helpful in lecture, or outside of class. Exams are based on powerpoints (fyi) but the exam questions are like a riddle- it does not test my bio knowledge but more so my English vocabulary. Each exams have averaged out to 60% in a class of 200+ students. If you're taking his class, study the powerpoints not the book! Good luck!
I took immunology (425) over the summer with Dr. Guzman, and absolutely loved it. He is passionate about what he teaches and makes it so enjoyable. If you keep up with the material and participate, this class can be an easy A. Don't procrastinate on the final paper like I did!!!
Lectures suck!! Make sure you really read the book otherwise it will be impossible to pass
Doesn't finish lectures bcuz runs out of time during every class, although exams are not focused on stuff he doesn't cover. Knows what he is talking about, but will ramble a lot unnecessarily so it is easy to zone out. Tests are lecture slide heavy. Only refer to the book for captions on the visuals he has on slides if you don't get it. An eh prof
He is one of the most vague professor I have ever had at UMBC but expects a lot out of your writing assignments. Extremely unfair when assigns group project so pray that you get good ones or your grade suffers. He has zero empathy tho always asks for it from his student but never reciprocates it. Be ready to write well according to his exact style!
Dr. Rivera-Guzman explains assignments and presents rubrics, but then seems to grade using a different set of criteria. Sending emails for clarification is useless as he rarely responds. I sent a total of 5 emails asking questions about assignments and only received a response to one. I definitely do not recommend taking a class taught by him.
You would think he's a nice person in class but outside of class he doesn't care about you. He ignores all of your emails and has absolutely no sympathy. He tells you to reach out if you have any concerns or need any help but intentionally ignores you if you do and is rude. He's a mediocre professor at best and he doesn't care about his students.
Some of his quiz questions are based on things from his recorded lectures so pay attention. I recommend reading the chapter reviews in the book and lectures just so you don't miss anything. DOESN'T responds to emails. I'd say use google hangouts but even then if he responds its a miracle so just befriend your classmates and help each other
His lectures were great and he explained concepts so well and made sure everyone understood them. He relies on class participation in order to help us learn and it's very effective. This class was only graded on end of chapter quizzes and exams. The wording on the quizzes and exams can be tricky, but still fairly easy. Loved this class!
Lectures were very poor, didn't provide additional or basic information. He really cares about the part of word ("what does intra mean" dude it's a level 400 class) vs real content. Course was more how to write an essay according to his specifications, with some immunology sprinkled in, but you still need to know so much from the dense textbook.
Literally take this class with someone else or at MC. If not, be prepared to put more effort in this 2 credit course than in your actual microbiology course with the 10+page lab reports and bogus recorded lockdown quizzes testing you on whether or not you remember small details he utters for .5 seconds in his lectures.
I'm telling you to take it at a community college if he's the only option you have. Quite vague and doesn't specify anything, especially what you need to study for on his quizzes. So get ready to study the Labs, Manuel & all his videos ***WORD TO WORD*** to only get a B. The Lab/Lab Reports (7+ pages) was the "easiest" because he didn't make them.
Terrible professor. Unclear and bipolar at times. Take this class with someone else. it'll save you some sleepless night.
Take this course somewhere else. The quizzes are so random, and the wording on the questions are so confusing. The lab simulations take a few hours to do, and the reports are treacherous. Be prepared to write 10+ pages for lab reports. His lectures and quizzes don't match up, and doesn't apply to emails.
If you care about your health, DON'T take his class. The TAs grade your lab report, but don't give helpful feedback that will help you improve your next one. Since he doesn't grade the lab report you can't ask him specific questions about it. He also asks the most specific questions on quizzes. Many are things he BRIEFLY mentions in the lecture.
Final exam and quizzes dont make sense. Nothing correlates to things learned in lecture and lab lead-ins. Doesnt explain things properly yet expects so much from students. Take the class with someone else!
Don't take a class with this professor. Although he seems nice, his tests are crazy hard and too specific. He'll throw so much info at you and only add the small details from a lecture to an exam or quiz. Annoying. Go keep it microbiological at another university, Professor Guzman.
This is the worst professor I have ever had. Professor Guzman is absolutely horrible. If you take this class be prepared to write at least 10 pages, single spaced every week. The quizzes are impossible to take and it seems like this class is designed to make you fail, not succeed. Do not take this class if you can help it.
I am sorry but Dr. Guzmans class was the hardest class I have ever taken. I have never struggled with classes at umbc and this class was hard. He had no sympathy and was the most unorganized professor. His lectures are all over the place and his exams were hard. He expected so much out of his students and also his exams are CAMERA proctored
This was a 2 credit class yet the hardest class I've ever taken. He is unorganized, not clear, and seems as if he does not care for his students. Lab reports take hours to do and would not be graded until 3 weeks later. Quizzes and exams were incredibly difficult and did not fully reflect what we learned. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!
Dr. Guzman is without a doubt the worst professor Ive ever had at UMBC. If youre reading these reviews and thinking, it possibly cant be THIS bad it is. It is THIS bad. It doesnt matter how smart you think you are or how strong your work ethic is, he WILL put you through hell. Take 303L in the spring and save yourself from mental anguish.
Hard quizzes and exams, and those are literally what your grade is composed of nothing else. Avoid if you can.
Hard class but doable, read the chapter before the lesson even starts and take your own notes before class. His notes are very confusing. Then go to class and add on his notes and what he's saying. Pay attention to "self quiz" at the end of each chapter. Exam questions are repetitive from quiz questions so review quiz. Horrible tests/quizzes tho.
This is what I did to pass: - Bought a loose leaf copy of the textbook (amazon) - Took my own detailed textbook notes b4 class so I had an understanding of what the lecture would be about. - Go to lecture & take notes on slides & important things he SAYS (he repeats certain things for emphasis) pay attention! - Take advantage of his office hours
Very horrible. Please if you are reading this, save yourself. He will throw so much information at you and only test you on select items. So unorganized and unclear. Don't be like me. If you are reading these reviews, its because you want to know what you will be getting into-- save yourself.
DO NOT TAKE THIS LAB WITH GUZMAN. He throws tantrums if you make one mistake. Post lab quizzes are lockdown with camera and have questions with the most minute details from one of the several papers and videos you read/watch before lab. The final was all FRQ and full of ridiculous questions. Run away if you can.
If I get the chance to rate him worse than awful, I could. He is the definition of MEAN+WORST professor I ever had in my 4year of college. He thinks he is funny and nice, but he is the OPPOSITE. If you wanna suffer your college time with the most annoying person you can go ahead and sign up. I wish he resigns before abusing more students.
Take him AT YOUR OWN RISK! He is very knowledgeable and passionate about his field, however, he is not good at explaining the content. He is assignment-heavy, tests are extremely hard and he is not sympathetic with grading and takes forever to give scores and feedback. Does not tell you what to study for exams. Teaching is not his calling!
Immunology with Dr Rivera-Guzman was one of the best classes I had at UMBC. He's a very energetic & passionate professor. His lectures are super interesting. He provides v helpful feedbacks. Oh and he paints cool immuno cartoons! It is A LOT of work though- we had 5 writing assignments, 4 article presentations and 3 exams, in total. So get ready!
Rude and condescending attitude for feedback on assignments under the guise of trying to be helpful. Disorganized lectures and structure of grading for presentations and FRQs.
Class is mainly comprised on quizzes and tests. Also doesn't give any extra credit opportunities. Gives so much information during lecture but only a few of the things are included in the quizzes.
Bro if u have him as ur prof... SHOW UP TO LECTURES OR U WILL BE LOST ASF! Also, the quizzes and test content is very specific.
Avoid this professor if you can. He goes way too fast during lectures and doesn't make any time for questions mid-lecture. The grades in this class are only composed of exams and end-of-chapter quizzes. He doesn't respond to emails, makes the exam questions way too specific, and everything feels impossible.
This class made me struggle a whole lot. Be sure to get the textbook and read ahead. His lectures are fast and I highly recommend writing out the notes. Study for this class(Anki is helpful) because the quizzes are webcam and that's all the practice you get. Also, the class could be better by giving more (optional) extra practice and rid webcam. imo
I personally do not think Dr.Guzman was as bad as his ratings sad. It was definitely a tough class and you need to make sure to take notes and go to every class, but as long as you put good efforts into your study habits, you will do well on the quizzes and exams. He does give quizzes after each chapter and everything is closed note and proctored.
I have no idea why his rating is so low. Go to his lectures and follow along, and you will be great. Re-read the powerpoints and study his powerpoints, and you will pass the tests with no problem. Reading the chapters gives an extra advantage but just know the ppts, and you will pass easily. I would take his class again in a heartbeat.
For a two credit course the amount of work required was double a few of my 4 credit classes. The questions given are so detailed for the course and not necessarily needed for a majority of the labs. If you dont want to do crazy amounts of harshly graded work then chose a different lab.
I would like to start off by saying Dr.Guzman is a nice person. However in terms of being a professor he is a little all over the place his lectures sometimes include slides with just pictures which make them hard to follow. He tends to be extra for no reason his only grades for his lecture are exams and end of chapter quizzes.
The quizzes and exams are all multiple choice but, the questions are very detailed oriented. You're expected to know the major concepts and as well as fine details about them as well. His questions are VERY subjective to his opinions on biology. Lectures cover very little of what you will see on quizzes and exams. Though, he's interactive.
He shows extreme passive-aggressiveness that makes asking questions or help during labs very difficult. This class required us to do more work than a regular 4-credit biology course and the quizzes are all on Lockdown Browser. You should not have to study irrelevant and specific details for a quiz of a lab that you already successfully completed.
Easily the worst lab I've taken in UMBC. We're expected to read through several pages of instructions, watch multiple videos, watch a lecture, take notes on all of those, take a pre lab quiz that asks specific questions to all of that, AND take a closed note post quiz with questions that are based off the former things and requires a camera. AVOID!
For BIOL470: He's passionate no doubt. But he really expected students in a 6 WEEK COURSE to do the amount of a graduate level PROGRAM. He has a massive power trip, gets irritated when no one knows the answer to incredibly advanced topics. Harsh grader, gives way too much work, will condescendingly answer your questions with more questions. AVOID.
He moves way too fast during lectures so you're struggling to keep up then says you don't need to write everything. The weekly quizzes are very specific so you DO need to write it all down yet. He has also put students on the spot before for no reason other than a power trip. One student was smiling and he stopped the lecture to question why.
The amount of prepatory work isn't parallel for a 2-credit course. He'll assign multiple readings & videos prior to lab and it's too much. On top of that, his directions are SO unclear and it's ridiculous the way he phrases quiz questions. Too confusing and designed to be incorrect. I agree with him having an ego/power trip. Not recommended.
Professor Guzman is rough im ngl. He seems like a nice enough guy (even with the ego), but overall I can see why people have problems with him. He did not give a clear designated time for office hours if people needed them, was hard to reach via Email and moved through the lecture very fast. Grading feedback was also nonexistent, so beware of that.
Very kind person. Passionate about immunology and microbiology. It's a 2 credit course with the work of a 4 credit course. Some quizzes had questions made to trip you up. Hard to reach via email. Clear instructions and expectations. Overall, it's a hard class but it's a good class, & I enjoy what I learned. Great TA & great feedback on lab reports.
Super harsh grading and 60% of your grade is based on tests, quizzes, and the final. Extremely detailed questions like "at minute 1 of link 3, what did this person say" specific. Extremely stressful but learned a lot
honestly guys i recommend reading your textbooks before class, taking good notes , and really being attentive in class because alot of things in your exams and quizzes are based on things he says in lecture. Also go to office hours , that really helps to clarify things, i promise you can succeed in this class despite what others may say.
Really enjoyed taking this class, the lectures are more intensive than other courses I've had at UMBC simply due to the amount of material that is covered, but Dr. Guzman does a great job breaking down concepts and is very receptive to any questions. Immunology was definitely one of my favorite bio courses I took at UMBC, highly recommend!
You got back what you put into this course. Lab report grading was fair, but I can't say the same for pre- or post-lab quizzes. There were always questions not covered in the material or lecture, with no way to study for them. 39% of your final grade was determined on the last day of class. Professor NEVER responded to emails in a timely manner.
Guzman talks really fast and rambles. This makes lecture useless. He doesn't give you a heads up on what the exam is going to be like at all. HW is helpful for conceptualization - but it's not tested. Exams are like a game of memorizing every vocabulary on the slides - 0 comprehension questions.
He belittles his students for getting bad scores w/o realizing its bc the qsns on exams ARE SO SPECIFIC. Not only are they difficult but they're UNFAIR! The questions differ for everybody; they're 100% randomized with some people getting easier questions than others, avoid him for the sake of your well-being!
I would rather have taken the orgo sequence again than deal with this man. His attitude, tone, and demeanor are awful. Avoid him at all costs. After completing the entire Biology sequence, I can confidently say he is the worst professor. He acts like he's being forced to do this. Dr. Legates should have taught this class alone.
Javier teaching was disorganized and unclear, making the material hard to follow. He struggled to explain concepts effectively, His lack of engagement and dismissive responses to questions frustrated the class. Deadlines and grading felt inconsistent, adding to the stress the experience was poor, and I wouldn't recommend taking a class with him.
Guzman's lectures were packed with an insane amount of information. There were tons of misspellings and grammar errors making it hard to understand. He had a very negative attitude and was not accessible outside of class (ignored all my emails). Exams focused on the most hyper acute details from lecture. Worst professor I've had, Avoid at all costs
Not a good professor. Don't take any lecture-based course with him. Terrible experience.
This was my second attempt after the summer with Feeser. Cell bio is very hard and requires a lot of reading and memorization. I didn't fid Guzman to be mean but he didn't seem approachable. He also moved too quickly for my pace. I would suggest taking cell bio at a community college. I barely scraped by with a C and that's after extra credit.
For BIOL 470- Very unclear about expectations around exams/quizzes. Weekly proctored one-chance quizzes tended to nitpick specifics about anything on either of his two packed 35+ slide presentations he uploads AFTER the related lecture. Condescending attitude around questions. "Study guides" for exams were too broad to reflect the questions asked.
FOR BIOL 470- Dr. Guzman is a very caring and sincere professor. He is very passionate in teaching and lectures in class while incorporating class discussions. You will do well in the course if you participate and take notes after each lecture. Pay attention to small details and make flashcards throughout for active recall!
This prof is straight-up terrible. His lectures are a complete mess,no structure, no clarity, just pure confusion. I learned nothing, and honestly, I wouldn't wish this class on my worst enemy. If you care about passing, avoid him at all costs. pick literally anyone else if you wanna succeed, waste of time and money.
One of those classes that will give you a headache but you always gain something out of it
Does not communicate through email. Quizzes are okay, but weirdly specific. Verbose lectures during lab. We spent an hour going over how to use a microscope. If I put in the (Required) time outside of class prepping for a lab, it should pay off. This is the case with every other lab I've taken in the bio sequence, including organic 1 & 2.
Very disrespectful, cannot keep his cool during lab. Expectations are not made clear for each assignment. Every quiz, report, and homework question is highly specific with no regard for broad or overarching concepts. Class is essentially an eye-spy book, but in quiz format. Honestly embodies everything that makes a bad professor.
I had Dr Guzman for biol303 which I barely passed and 303L which I easily passed. His questions are specific and there's a lot of information but he will help you if you ask. He's big on respect, participation and speaking up if you need help. He's very no nonsense but I learned more in 6 weeks than I did in 4 years at umbc.
DO NOT take this class. ESPECIALLY if you're an allied health major. He is an absolutely horrible professor and will have you change your whole entire trajectory for your future career path. His weekly quizzes have nothing to do with his lectures, and his exams have nothing to do with the text book or lectures. He comes off as very snobby too.
Lectures are confusing and your only grade is tests and quizzes. Definitely should read the textbook. Weekly quizzes are given on lockdown browser and will ask about the most random parts of the lecture that has nothing to do with the core concepts. Uploads lecture recordings and slides but listening in person is so much better.
Class graded on ONLY weekly quizzes and exams. No opportunity for extra credit. His lectures are EXTREMELY fast, if you are a slower learner, good luck. At least his lectures are recorded so you can rewind/slow down. He is very knowledgeable and DOES make connections and applications during lectures to help understanding. Questions super specific.
The class was not attendance mandatory however going does help.Your grade is based only on exams and quiz homework's which was very difficult. As passionate of a professor he was, everything was so fast and started to become unclear. Exam wording is horrible. Making me rethink my future as just a 101 class.
Passionate professor butnclass is graded by a very little amount of grades (online weekly quizzes and exams). Questions in the weekly quiz are often irrelevant to the concepts needed to understand in biology.
Exam and weekly quizzes has random questions from lecture slides, super random. Lectures basically make no sense, unorganized and scattered. Most of the learning will come from the textbook chapters if you put in the time to read all of it you'll be fine. Hard to get an A.
He is nice and the way he teaches is simple however, the questions on his weekly online quizzes were sometimes random and irrelevant to the actual topic. His slides were unorganized and don't make sense without reading the textbook. If you take this class, read the chapter before lectures to make sense of his slides for the most part.
difficult class and this professor wasnt of much help
Calling him a “professor” is an insult to the name. He is a lazy man and it shows with the only grades being based off of quizzes and exams. Do yourself a favor and take this course with anyone BUT him. You email him he doesn't respond, you go to his office hours, he acts like you're ruining his day. Like a man that is always on a power trip.
This class made me cry every single day and night. If you don't have a religion find one and pray because it's just the beginning and I'm suffering. He gives weekly quizzes and questions make no sense, he words it for him to understand the questions not students. I studied for hours and days before exams the highest I've got was a D…
What can I say? I have never received a failing grade a day in my life. Nothing is enough for this class. You study, read, tutor and still fail. Do yourself a favor and cheat on the daily quizzes that's the only way you can truly pass.
This professor is a waste of investment. He doesn't respond when you reach out for clarification and gives tests and quizzes with incorrect answers. Textbooks and even ChatGPT say one thing and he says another. He seems not to know what he's doing and is mean and cantankerous. Skip his class if you can.
For the sake of your mental health please take any professor but him. He goes out of his way to make this class DIFFICULT. He is not an educator AT ALL, you walk out of his class teaching yourself the material. Down to him and the TA, no one is helpful. I was point away from a C and he refused to round it up... #thegrinchthatstolechristmas
