Very Helpful, Makes math easy to remember
cares about students, teaches well
Take him if you like to fail
Right now the class average is a 51%
Nice guy, good at explaining things, tests are not too difficult. Gives a lot of partial credit, just show up and do some work. You should be fine.
class avg. is very low, 80% fail, take him if you want to fail
jay is great at explaining and takes questions all the time. gives 12-15 pop quizzes on homework and only counts your top ten grades
Jay makes the math program easier than any other professor. He wants you to learn and unlike other professors, he WANTS you to pass.
As long as you kept up it was easy
My Favorite math professor, made everything so much simpler compared to others. He wants you to pass and encourages it. He doesnt try to trick you like other professors.
Jay is awesome and he speaks English great OU teacher compared to others I have had!!!
Jay is a really nice guy. Tests weren't too bad. Very easy to understand. Doesn't collect HW but has a lot of pop quizes.
Burke is awesome!! Highly suggest taking him. A great teacher and is always willing to help. So far, best math teacher i've ever taken at OU. Get his class. Great guy too.

I liked Jay. He is a super nice guy and a great teacher. TAKE HIM!!! I don't think you'll find a better math teacher(at least at OU). Very laid back and easy going.
He is the only good math teacher that I had at OU and is very fair. He also resembles Kevin Bacon from a distance. He has about 12 quizes and counts 10 of them. He also keeps everyone's interest.
Miserable professor....60% of my class failed. He is hard to understand and mocks the students' questions. Most of OU's math professors aren't a whole lot better though.
I think that he is a great teacher and takes his time in teaching. The class is not hard but it is a math class so it isn't going to be really easy. Do your homework and go to class and you will do fine.
This is a great professor. He is willing to help and can answer all of your question. So, if you dont understand, definately ask. His tests are not terribly simple, but if you go to class and take notes you will do fine.
one of the easiest math teachers at ou, also fun
Jay is a good math teacher and fairly easy to understand. I think he is one of the easiest professors for 121 and I would recommend him to anyone.
Awesome teacher. If you show up for class you'll do well. is extreamly good at simplifying math. you will really learn if you take this class.
Do not take this night class! The teacher is very nice but moves way too fast. The tests are almost impossible and do not reflect the work in class. Tip: Copy the tests in the Academic skills center. If you can figure that out then you will do fine!
TAKE JAY!! HE IS A COOL TEACHER. I HAD HIM FOR BOTH MATH AND HE IS THE BEST. YOU JUST HAVE TO YOUR WORK AND SHOW UP TO CLASS. HIS TEST ARE HARD BUT HE IS THE BEST MATH TEACHER AT OU
if your smart dont take him, he wants you to fail, class is easy, he teahces well and is easy to understand, but if u have bad handwriting you cant get better than a 3.5 just his policy and the math departments.
To pass this class, do your homework, go to ASC and study the tests. Nothing else needed. Good teacher, knows his stuff, sometimes he goes a little fast in class. Make sure you study for the 1st test, half the class fails it, so STUDY!!!
Tests are very HARD! Must have neat handwriting, goes very fast... focuses more on proving how smart he is instead of teaching. First test-half the class fails it! He gets a rise off of giving failing grades!
not a bad teacher, kind of boring, pretty much middle of the road guy. makes stupid jokes to lighten the mood. overall decent
WORST TEACHER EVER! HE IS SO ARROGANT AND ANNOYING! HE DOESN'T TEACH THE MATERIALS HE COVERS ON THE TESTS. HE IS REALLY BORING. HE DOESN'T OWN ANY CLOTHES, SO HE WEARS THE SAME THINGS EVERYDAY. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
he looks like peter north
i hate jay burke with a passion
People who are lazy and don't do homework or show up for class will not do good. If you show up and pay attention the examples you can pretty much do the homework. And for tests he reviews what types of problems will be on the test before you take it. Do your homework and show up for class!
To be sucessful in his class you should show up every class and do all the homework and you will be fine. He will go over similar questions that will be on a test the class before the test. Tests are a little hard but fair. Another plus is he will take and implement suggestions from the class.
Jay isn't the worst math prof. at OU but he certainly isn't the best. He collects homework so irregularly and gives examples that will NEVER appear on any test or quiz instead of giving examples that will actually help you. Its hard to stay awake in his class.. many people got to sleep or walk out
He can't explain things clearly. He doesn't use the book; this makes material difficult to grasp. The examples that he goes over in class are not on the tests and don't help you learn material. He makes dealing with him too difficult to bother. He can also be very insulting. Find another teacher!
Apparently not a good 012 teacher? Either way taught 121 well, moves fast but answers all questions fairly. Math is supposed to be hard, if you do homework everytime he reveiws it the next class and you should have no problem. Bumped my grade to a 4.0 on the final so work very hard for the final!!
THIS GUY IS AWFUL!!! DOESN'T WANT TO HELP YOU. JUST CONFUSES YOU WHILE PROVING HOW SMART HE IS. NOT A GOOD TEACHER.
Very bad teacher. Doesn't explain things well and doesn't take the time to make sure the students are understanding it. Don't take this professor unless you are very good at teaching yourself, because he doesn't.
He's not the best math teacher...but I don't think he was THAT bad. His tests are a little on the harder side but he passed me in this class after already failing it by someone else before...
3 words, DO NOT TAKE, if u get him drop him. he doesnt know how to teach and doesnt care if u get it or not
He was a really great professor, it just sucked that the math board wrote the tests!
confuses himself trying to explain things and makes students fall asleep because they cant even come close to following along
Rambles on alot.
He is truely confussing and half the time if you don't get the lesson then he doesn't either. Very boring and unclear. Take him if you have the patience
Jay is a "different" kind of guy. He has his own way of doing things and his class demands external effort. If you need to be babied and have the teacher go really slow, don't take him, for it may be frustrating. Overall, he's a pretty decent guy who knows his stuff.
Awful teacher.. he does not know how to teach and does not care if the material is understood.
Jay is an odd ball... if you want a teacher to help you, he isnt your guy. he answers questions over and over until you are too tired to listen. 2 projects take the place of 1 test, but they are SO hard. I prefer the test. But he was OK, except doesnt return emails
DO NOT TAKE!!! he doesnt c are what ur argument is. hes always right, teaches horribly, half of te time people didnt even come to class, you learn better by yourself... horrible teacher, save yourself and dont take him
dont take this guy or this class u have to do 2 projects which are a huge pain and waste of time. he is boring and doesnt give u a chance to redeem yourself .
This guy's weird. Not only is he weird, but he makes this class seem like a 400 level class. Unbelievable!!! He is a complete jerk. There are two stupid projects that are so difficult, you have to be a mathmatician to figure it out. Take this class at OCC, it is much easier and it will save you some time and money. Trust me!!!
OMG OMG OMG!!! Where do I begin. He is like one of the worst teachers you can possibly have for math. I don't know why I didn't check this website before taking his class. Mabey I would have seen all the frowning faces and then though again!!! Don't take his class. He gives a milion and one quizzes the tests are hard and he's boring as all H3LL!!!!
This class is very hard with Jay... his exams are redick
What a horrible professor! Never take this guy. He is unhelpful and is to unclear about projects. You'll find out the first day of class that he is only there to teach, nothing else. He is very rud and unprofessional.
Jay Burke is HORRIBLE! He thinks he knows everything and he is always right! You cannot argue with him because he will always win no matter what. His tests are nothing like his examples in class, and the projects are not very explained! Don't take this teacher!
don't take this teacher because he sucks at life and you will fail!
i hated him--he reminded me of one of my high school math teachers and it drove me crazy. he was very sarcastic at times and never really explained things very well. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!
He was a decent professor but a little wierd. He explained the tests just like they were. Just try hard and don't slack and you should be ok.
This guy sucks.. He is just a terrible teacher if you could call him that.. I would not take this class if you want credit. My class started with like 50 and went down to like 17 or so.. Do not take this professor
horrible teacher
reminds you the entire semester (from day one) that 60% of the class will fail. Prides himself on doing math in his head that no one else cares about. Notes don't help with exams at all and doesn't give you ANY help on the projects. he'd rather have everyone retake the class. "this class averages 2 or 3 times taking it before passing"
Very rude and unhelpful. He would not answer questions on projects. Class work did not help prepare for the tests. Avoid him and the class if possible. It seemed as if he wanted students to fail and always told us more than half of the class would.
Terrible just terrible does not help skips steps on the board reviews terrible tells you that you will never use the stuff you are learning terriblejust terrible
spended too much time to write notes on the board, went throught the material too fast, ignored the questions from students
I liked Jay! The class was very hard, but that's the department's fault, not his. He can be kind of rude sometimes and is hard to find out of class, but I understood what he taught and he reviewed very well. But don't take this class if you don't have to because the projects will keep you stressed out for the whole semester.
he is ok professor, helps you if you ask for it. take a night class with him, he reviews for test. his reviews help you alot.
This is not a fun class it is a fast pasted review of what we should have learned in high school or middle school. I found his notes and enthousiasm helpful. At night he gives you a very detailed review that covers in detail 95% of what is on the exam. I'm only over my head because I don't have time to study. He tells you 50% will fail (nat avg
Not answering questions, skips steps, and went through the materials too fast. not a good professor.
Not that easy a class, but math never is. Since i took the night class i would say the exams were not bad. since he said almost exactly what is on them. Group project was impossible, but even if you fail it (like i did) you can still get an A.

He is a good teacher and teaches the material well. But his tests are HARD!
GOOD CLASS
Seemed like he just expected us to know all the material with one example (usually a poor one, at that). He would give us notes but they would be, 99% of the time, totally unhelpful when doing the assigned homework. Project was also very difficult, and he provided little to no help in that aspect. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone
I am definitely not a math wiz and this class was hard for me. But, I really enjoy Jay's style of teaching. He explains the material thoroughly and helps you to understand it. Great teacher. I really enjoyed his class. I would say the best math prof at Oakland.
He gives Great easy to understand lectures, if you go to class and do the homework a lot you should be ok. He is by far the best Math Professor at OU. Go out of your way to get him if you can, its worth it. the other Math prof's enjoy you failing.
Jay is cocky and acts like you are wasting his time but who cares he gives you a clear easy to understand lecture everytime you go to class. Also his reviews for tests are just like the exams themselves. The homework is worth as much as a test grade. Best math prof i have ever had and i just finished up calc II.
Best math professor I've encountered. He covers material quickly, but very thoroughly. He makes everything very easy to understand. If anyone has a question he'll answer it and then make sure they understood his answer before moving on with class.
i detest math. this class was awesome. soooo easy. these people that say otherwise must be complete idiots. and i like jay. he's funny.
Burke is nice. He is very helpful and is SOOO smart when it comes to math. He obviously has a passion for it. Go to class, do homework & make sure you go to the review sessions b/c a lot of his test questions are in the review. I passed the class but not with a grade i needed. That is MY fault, not Burke. I would take him again in a heart bea
very helpful. very funny.i hate math but he made it bearable. i failed this class before, then when i re-took it with him i got a 2.5...enough said
By far best math teacher ive had at oakland university. Easy to understand.Prepares you well for exams with no suprises.Genuinely wants you to do well.Is very helpful with answering any questions you might have.Unlike other prof not earning the grade you want or failing is dependent on your effort level and not how well this professor teaches.
He is the only American teacher that I have had for a math course at OU so far there is no doubt that I am failing the class. I find the tests that are set by the department to be very hard. I have done all the homework that was assigned twice and still cannot manage to pass a test. Jay is like a math god but the department here @ OU is insane
Great teacher, really cares about his students and their success. Very clear, go to class and do your homework and there is no reason for you to do badly. Jay makes math fun... hard to believe I know, but you will agree if you take him!
Great teacher, really cares about his students and their success. Very clear, go to class and do your homework and there is no reason for you to do badly. Jay makes math fun... hard to believe I know, but you will agree if you take him!
Jay Burke is awesome. For those who give him bad comments, they were just too lazy to do any homework or even try. He makes math fun, and that is insane. He is down to earth and so funny. He makes the class interesting and teaches you math so that you understand it. He doesnt use huge math terms or anything. He is smart and wants everyone to pass
Wow! I had to retake mth 121 bc my previous professor was way hard and Burke rocks!!! All the quizz questions come from the hw and notes. Tests are fair and hw isn't bad. He actually TEACHES!!! He makes math as easy as possible. I love him!!! Take him, you won't find a better mth professor.
If you want to pass, take burke. Hes a cool and funny guy, he makes math easy to understand. doesnt give impossible test questions on tests like other professors. By far the best math professor at OU.
Great teacher for such a hard class, realizes that a lot of people don't understand math. Lots of examples, and it helps that he's a really funny guy too. You can't get a better math teacher at OU.
by far the best math teacher at OU. Rather than just talking about math problems, he actually does a lot of examples. Doesnt put impossible problems on the tests like a lot of other OU math teachers. Take him. If you take him during the summer, you dont have to do the group poject.
Jay is the man. Great teacher. Doesnt try to trick you on tests.
Good guy. Wants to see students do well. Go to class, do the HW, and you should do fine. CLass is boring, but hes pretty funny so he keeps you entertained.
Jay is awesome!
Jay is a good professor. He gives homework and he will collect it. Tests are pretty hard. He has review days were you go over the material. Overall a good teacher to take for MTH 012 but it is a hard class.
This teacher is horrible. He is not a fair grader at all. He will try to trick you on tests and he does not explain things well.. all he says is you do it.. and maybe??! does this conjecture work? makes you find out for yourself..
Jay is AWESOME! Never had a better math teacher. He acknowledges math is hard for some people and doesn't belittle you because of it. Clear and refreshing in his teaching style. Wants kids to succeed, no surprises he lays everything right on the table. Obvious that he has a life outside of mathematics which is why he is so cool. Take Jay to pass!!!
Jay was great! I failed this class with another professor but did very well in his class. He gives lots of examples and will tell you exactly what will be on the tests-no surprises or impossible problems like most math profs at OU have. This class is very hard, but he made it as painless as possible.
"The Great Depression" bahahahahha. Good teacher though. I dig his hair. I don't really go to lecture and I learn from his workshop. Nothing really works out for him perfectly, and he'll let you know. Which is funny. Jay Burke for president.
Professor Burke is pretty fair with his test grading and homework. Definitely do the homework for an easy 25 points! Also, make sure you attend the test reviews because they are almost identical to the test and I found it extremely helpful.
Jay was an extremely helpful professor. I used to be horrible at Math in highschool, now I'm considering getting a major in the subject. I would reccomend Jay to any student regardless of their Math level.
Okay, no math class is going to be easy, especially college calculus. Burke makes it as easy as it's going to get. His problems are very reasonable and never impossible like most math profs., and he tells you exactly what to expect on the tests. NO SURPRISES!! If you're not a mathematician, take Burke!!!
He is rude when you ask him a question, if you ask why he graded something a certain way he flips out on you, he puts questions on the test that he doesn't even know how to do..i would take someone else if possible...
He tries to make everything understandable and doesn't just act like we're already supposed to know. He also grades the test fairly.
Burke is kind of the Dennis Leary of professors. Answers if you ask, but otherwise wonders why you didn't already know. Good professor.
Jay was great. Attend class, take notes, pay attention, and you will do well. He makes you work for your grade but there are no surprises. Plus, he's awesome.
The worst professor in oakland universtiy. complete & total jerk. he expects the answers to just fall into your brain. dry inappropriate sense of humor.
I had three math classes at OU prior to taking MTH 122 with Burke and earned a 4.0 in each one. I dropped Burke's class because he was so confusing and gave quizzes the same day he lectured on the material. Do not take Burke-it is a waste of your money.
Jay is one of the better profs I have had for MTH at OU. Makes you work to get your grade, but its not impossible. Plus he will go in depth on a question you have IF you ask. But IF you don't he'll just move on to the next subject.
Jay was a pretty good teacher. He came with lessons outlined of what would be learned. You do have to work for your grade! He rewards students who come to class regularly; maybe with a hw problem on a test. Class is based mostly of tests. Will help if you ask specific questions.I would recommend him to those who received a 2.6 or higher in Math 121
Jay is an amzing teacher - he has a gift. He knows just how to explain things in a simple way that even an idiot could understand. The people who don't like him are the lazy morons who sleep in class and expect an A without working for it.
Nice guy, clearly knowledgeable. Takes a lot of mathematical shortcuts which are very confusing with new material. Goes fast, does not take the pulse of the class. If students ask a question he often answers to quickly. Students must come to class prepared and keep up or else. Tests are reasonable.
I thought he was a really great teacher. Super laid back, easy to talk to and ask questions. Made himself very available. Encouraged questions. Tests were straight forward no surprises and even gave us an option for our homework and how it was collected. I was extremely happy I had him as my professor, would encourage others to take his class.
Well, I didnt enjoy my time spent with Jay, he was the ws instructor. Most of our class time was spent talking about sports. Really fun, but not helpful in math. Some people really like this guy...Its hit of miss, I suggest someone else.
He was a great guy, really funny and easy to talk to. I had him last semester, it was the easiest math class I've ever taken, despite the difficult material. he really knew what he was doing, and helped a lot
Don't make the mistake I made by taking his class or any math class at OU, actually. Go take one at MCC or something (that's what I have to do since I dropped his class halfway through). His class was a nightmare & he is probably the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life.
Had for pre-calc. workshop. He was ok at explaining and answering questions. He skipped steps like simplifying so sometimes I would get lost on how he got from one step to another. He taught the material really fast since there wasn't a lot of time to go over it. He tried to help us prepare for exams with practice questions. Don't take math at OU!
