Awesome teacher! He knows and loves political science! He teaches many familiar and many new subjects and does it quite unbiasedly (which is hard to do). Very entertaining as well. Reminds me of Chandler Bing on "Friends". Do the study guide and pay attention in class and you'll do fine. Good class
He is a great teacher and he wants the students to do well. do the reading and study the guides and you eill do well in his class.
He is very good. Funny, passionate about his subject and easy to talk to. Take this class for a great GE fulfillment course. You will learn a lot about the US Government
Great teacher with a wonderful sense of humor. His entire grade is based on 3 tests and a final, which is a bit rought. However, if you take notes and read the chapters you'll do more than fine in his classes.
He knows his stuff. He makes it fun. Your entire grade is based on three exams, they're tough. If you know some stuff then you'll understand.
Very interesting class but very hard also. The teacher makes it fun but it is hard to get an A. He bases your whole grade on three tests and is not all to clear about what will be on them.
he very smart in this subject. The tests are difficult so an A is out of the question. He seems to have no real intreast in the students I am sure that he dose not know an names of any students in the class I was in.
Knows his stuff, He is very clear. Very Funny also. He does not try to impose his own personal politics on the students which is great for those of us who like living in the bubble.
DeSart is so funny! Great sense of humor. Discusses everything in class and gives study guides for tests. Goes over test questions after the fact. Tests and 1 paper. Very helpful in clarifying things. Easy grade on the paper if you understand the topic well. Awesome guy! I'd definitly recommend him!!!
Freakin Funny
lameeeeeeeeeeee
He's a funny man. I wasn't at all interested in the class, but he made it bearable. Show up to class, take notes, study and you should do fine. His tests aren't the easiest, but you can get a really good grade if you study his study guide thuroughly. If you have to take this class.. take it from him.. he knows his stuff and teaches it well!
Dr. Destart is a fabulous teacher. The first few lectures were awesome, but sometimes it wasn't worth going to class. Study the study guide he gives and email him if you have questions. I'm a senior in high school and went to college early, and no I'm not a nerd and I got an A-. Tests can be hard if you don't understand concepts. EASY A - B!!!
He is a great teacher, I learned a ton in his class. Just take notes and study the study guide and read the book you will do fine because he doesn't have anything else, but tests. He was great.
He's pretty funny. If you don't interupt him he will just talk and talk though without asking questions, which can be boring. He's a really cool guy though. I would recommend him to my friends.
Dr. DeSart's class was the high point of my semester. I'm not into political science, but he made the subject very interesting. His exams as very easy if you show up to class and read up on the terms he lists in the study guide. A total of about 10-15 hours of study for the entire course and I got an A.
He is a funny guy and a great teacher. If you go to class and study his study guide you should pass. he doesn't care if you show up to class or not, but he has no homework and just 3 tests. if you study for the tests you will pass.
Dr. DeSart is a great teacher. Attendance is not mandatory but suggested that you go. His tests are not hard if you read the book, do the study guides and go to class. Some of the questions are just from lecture. I would definitly recommend him.
A political science geek. Makes class lots of fun and always has a quip to go along with a great insight. Class isn't too difficult if you attend and put in some time to read the book. Great way to become one of the politcally informed elite.
This professor is a hip-cat. He's a little out of the book, but also very smooth at explaining it all. You can tell he's a democrat, but he doesn’t arrogantly push his ideas on you, which is rare. He's approachable if you need accommodations. The course is a snap if you follow along with him in the book.
Not too hard. You MUST have the textbook and read it. He does use it! Good class attendance will bump you up a half letter grade at the end of the semester. He also offers ONE extra credit opportunity which gives you an additional 5% to your raw percentage score. He's fun and very knowledgeable. He makes class fun and worth your time.
Dr. DeSart is awesome. He is the best professor I've had so far. He certainly knows his stuff, and he is HILARIOUS! He takes a subject that could be very boring and makes it interesting and entertaining. If you read the book, attend class, and use his great study guides you'll get a good grade.
Absolute Loser. He thinks the world revolves around his classes. Little discussion, if left unattended will talk non-stop. Loves to poke fun and tell stupid jokes about bigger and better schools (inferiority complex). Class is easy
Funny as heck! Fun teacher, and very crystal clear on what you need to study! Grade based only on 3 exams that are easy to pass if you read!
Great teacher. He knows a lot about PolySci and loves the subject. He makes it fun by adding some humor everyonce in a while. You gotta read the book on your own along with going to class. He doesn't have homework other than book reading. He will be more prone to help you out with your final grade if you had gone to class all the time.
great teacher
Freakin Hilarious man. Fun class. No homework. 3 tests, they are actually kind of challenging. It's easy to pay attention so do it and you'll do fine.
This class wasn't easy, but if you read the book, and take the pretest study quizzes, and learn the vocabulary you can do well on the tests. He gives two extra credit opportunities that also help increase your grade. Getting an A is possible if you are willing to work.
THe best teacher that I have had so far. Very good lectures, I loved learning from him. Learned a ton! 3 exams, no homework. First exam a killer, the last two better. Not a cakewalk class, but not rediculously hard either.
Very awesome teacher. He lectures straight from the book. His tests are easy if you follow the study guides.
He is very into his subject and he knows what he is talking about. He is very helpful, honest, and kinda funny. Make sure you study your book and the pretest help sheets, the vocab is very important. First test is hard and you need to really study for it,the other 2 test are prolly avg. Come to class and study and you will do great.
if you actually study the guides he gives you at the beginning of the semester you will do fine. he is very knowledgeable and generally interesting, although he does tend to ramble from time to time. his tests are only hard if you haven't studied the guide well enough. if you have, they shouldn't be too difficult.
He is a really funny teacher, but his tests are insainly hard. I always walked away thinking I did well but ended up bombing them which was really discouraging.
ip address logged? lol
He is a good teacher and knows about the subject. Was not always the most helpful but in the end he did make some effort.
This teacher was entertaining and funny. Requires a little patience but I learned a lot. I was in a study group which really helped and I recommend making friends in the class to study for the tests with. Not an easy A but not impossible.
If you attend class and study the study guides, you'll be fine. It's not very much maintenance after that! His study guides tell you everything that's on the test, and even in class he'll tell you something will be on the test. highly recommended!
Very easy, just do the study guides and you will do just fine.
Great professor. Makes the class really interesting. Just make sure you use his study guides and especially know the vocab on them, and you'll do good on the tests!
Grades are based on three tests only. He's entertaining, but doesn't seem to care much about student success. Study guides are vague. Make sure to read the book.
This guy is funny as heck. I hated this material, but he made it bearable. I learned a lot.
He is really good teacher& funny.I was in his Am Gov class, &although many other people in class had trouble, I found it easy.If u just read the txt.bk.,pay a little attention in class& study maybe a few hrs b4 the test, it won't be very hard. He doesn't take roll.Ur grade is based only off ur grades on the 3tests. Do what I said b4 &u'll get an A!
Classes consist of useless and boring lectures. The tests are extremely hard. Half of the test was an essay. From talking to others in the class it seems like unless you were one of the favorites you always got a bad grade no matter how well written the essay was. Another negative thing was 3 textbooks were required, each costing an arm and a leg
Pretty good teacher makes the class interesting. No assignments are ever due, the class is graded on strictly 3 tests that are relatively easy as long as you do the reading. Not the best choice, but not the worst either.
Class times are extremely simple compared to the tests, but if you do the homework and pay attention in class its way easy to get a good grade.
Funny guy. Very chill on classroom policies. Lectures are long and detailed.
He is my favorite professor. I have take about 4 of his classes and have gotten an A on everyone of them. If you come to class, and pay attention there is no reason you shouldn't get an A. TAKE NOTES! I would write down as much as you can from what he says. If you do that you will be fine. He is really funny and makes politics interesting!
The only reason people would think his tests are hard is if they didn't take notes. He tells you everything that is going to be on the test so if your taking notes you will have the answers for the study guide, no reason you shouldn't get an A. He is funny and teaches politics objectively. UVU is lucky to have him.
Dr. Desart is a great professor. He is extremely funny and very clear. The tests weren't too bad as long as you take notes and read you'll do fine. I got an A on all the tests and I felt like I didn't have to study too hard. I would definitely take another class from him
The grade is based on 3 tests. He says "Read the book" all the time for the tests and I always did but I barely passed the exams. He's a funny guy with a dry sarcastic sense of humor. He wasn't the best teacher for me, But he is a good teacher. I'm too shy to ask for help so I don't know if he will work with you or not. Good luck everybody
DeSart is an interesting character. He is nerdy about this subject but I think it helps to make him a better teacher. Attendance is vital to your survival in this class. He gives extremely hard tests but if you take good notes and come to class you will pass. Don't be fooled by his term of quizzes, they are normal size tests in other classes.
Very Funny, entertaining, easy to follow, Democrat which is hard to find in this state and a plus. However not very flexible, tough tests.
So funny! And really smart. The TV news came in our classroom and filmed him because he predicted that Obama would win. His exams are tough, but he gives good study guides.
Loved this class! DeSart really kept the class moving and was entertaining. His tests were a little hard, but he had tons of practice quizzes you could take.I would definitely take another class from him!
Not sure why DeSart is teaching at this level. Too much information is covered. If you want to memorize terms in order to pass a test, this is the course for you. If you want to learn, take one of his more specific in depth courses. Great person with good sense of humor and very informative. Not sure if folks retain after the test...
Final grade was based off of only three tests. Offered extra credit. Lectured all semester, but talked clearly and information was there. Interesting voice. Text book is helpful. He was willing to help those who asked.
DeSart is a tough teacher, he seems like kind of an apathetic jerk at first but if you go in and speak with him he is actually pretty reasonable and very nice. The grade is based only off of three tests which makes it difficultpretty much impossible to get an A if you screw up. The lectures are long and boring at times but info is relevant.
Dr. DeSart has turned out to be one of my very favorite professors at UVU. His Political Parties class had a low enrollment, yet he still gave 100% effort as if the class room has 400. He was on-task, sharp, knowledgeable, funny, tough, but his class was totally worth my tuition money and then some. I marvel at the wealth of knowledge he has.
Jay is super geeky about the topic he teaches, but he knows his stuff! Hard class but typically all the best ones are!
Desart is my favorite teacher at UVU. He gives amazing lectures, and he is always willing to help when you need it. The only thing that I struggled with in his class is the fact that your whole grade is based off of 3 tests that he gives you. If you are not a good test taker, DON'T take this class.
If you're not a good test taker do NOT take this teacher. He lectures and assigns readings. You then get 3 tests throughout the semester and they are your entire grade. There is no homework, no quizzes, just tests. If you don't take good notes, good luck. The study guides are sort of helpful but not great. No extra credit. Outside speaker required
He doesn't care about attendance but if you don't come you won't pass. He's tough but despite how he acts he really does want you to succeed and is happy to help you. You can tell he loves and lives this subject. I did NOT want to take this class but he makes it super fun, relevant and informational. I would definitely take from him again!
Funniest dude ever. Super cool, just pay attention and read the textbook and study for the exams and you'll do just fine.
Professor DeSart is a good teacher and enjoys what he teaches. I took his class during the 2016 election which he had very strong, obvious feelings and opinions about. That is what turned me off about the class, I would rather take a political science class from a teacher who stays neutral in their opinions while teaching.
The class was fun until you realized he wasn't teaching you anything that was going to be on the test. He was always getting off topic and would only cover about 25% of the power point each class which is where you get a lot of the material for the tests from. Very frustrating class.
He was awesome. So funny and he really knows his stuff. I didn't really know much about politics before I took the class, but he made it relevant and interesting. I'm really glad I took this class from him. He has great study guides and reading the book is really important.
He is hilarious! He makes the topic relevant and entertaining. Yes, he has his opinions and you can tell what a lot of his political views are, but he is respectful and fair to both sides. If you actually read the textbook you will do well. I read every ch and memorized the vocab on his reviews and never got below a 92 on an exam.
I've had professor Desart for other classes as well as this one. I really enjoy the set-up of the class. There are three large tests that you can easily pass if you show up to class and read the textbook. Reading the text book is key. He gets a lot of his questions straight from it. He also gives a study guide for each test that greatly helps.
He's super passionate about what he teaches, and it shows. Really funny. I never got the book due to a shipping error, so the first test kinda blindsided me because it was heavy from the book, very little from the lectures. Basically his lectures put the info from the book into perspective. Do the reading and show up, you'll do fine.
He does not take attendence, but he does clarify most points in his lectures, especially for the first exam. Offers extra credit throughout the semester. If you do significantly better on the next exam then he will make your first one have less weight in the grade. Funny guy who knows his stuff. 3 exams; many online quizzes. Practice quizes help!
Lecture based and test heavy. Some like him some dont. His teaching style w/my learning style didnt mix. At one point he even said I was the lowest score student of his career. Was a senior w/3.6GPA prior to this class. Same class diff. Prof. w/diff teaching style, earned an A If U can learn by lectures only, take him. If not, avoid. That simple.
DeSart is an interesting guy. Although I felt his class was very tough, he is a great teacher! He is understanding and willing to work with you. You need to come to class to pass. His tests are pretty hard. If you come to class, do the homework (which is minimal) and study hard for the tests you will pass the class.
He is a fantastic professor, I didn't really try very hard but if I did I'm sure I would have gotten an A
Incredible professor. I have taken a handful of his classes and they can be challenging. If you put in the effort you can get the grade you want. The tests can be difficult, but he provides a review. I have done well on all of the exams by studying from that review. I learned more from his classes than any other POLS class I have taken at UVU.
Professor DeSart prides himself on grading super strict. He mentioned many times: "there is no such thing as a perfect answer." So be prepared to have everything you do graded down heavily. Lectures go on forever, and are not very helpful. The book does explain things better. His exams are super difficult, and all free response.
I kid you not. I hate everything to do with politics and yet I loved this class. DeSart gave great lectures and made a boring subject interesting. To date one of my favorite professors. Study for the tests and pay attention in class and you'll do fine.
Best professor at UVU. His expectations are clear and consistent. The lectures are entertaining; don't miss them! Go to class, read the book and you'll do great. Easy to get extra help from him outside of class if you need it. I learned more from his classes than I did from all my other classes combined.
Dr. DeSart is a wonderful individual, who knows his stuff. The course is structured in a way that 75% of your grade is based solely on 3 exams. However, the way Jay teaches is tailored exactly to the study guide, which he gives out at the start of the semester. He is fair with allowing the class to speak, and is really entertaining. Take a class!
I struggled with POLS 3000 (difficult material). But I do feel that DeSart is a solid prof. who knows the material well and will explain until you understand. You need to attend and be prepared to do lots of busywork, which is sometimes helpful, sometimes a waste. Be warned: he loves EARLY mornings, so set an alarm. Lecture notes ++! Will retake.
One of the best I've had at explaining what is (for me) difficult to understand material. I now comprehend standard deviation, z-score, etc. in a real world, plain English way. Yes his workload and expectations are high, but you will learn and grow and it is worth the effort.
Dr. DeSart is a very great lecturer. He offers a fresh, non-biased perspective. His tests (if you're trying for an A, expect to work harder than ever) are VERY difficult but he provides a study guide and keeps the class lively. Work hard, learn a lot, study like a maniac!
Professor DeSart is a great teacher. He is lecture heavy and a tough grader, but hes always accessible to answer questions or clarify something. You will get out what you put in. Dont come to class and he wont care, but you cannot do well in this class if youre regularly gone.
My favorite professor at UVU. I have had four of his classes and wish I could have taken all of his courses. He is smart, explains things well, and sets clear expectations. He is super funny and is more than willing to help if you ask.
Horrible experience. Do not sign up for classes from this Professor. This Professor is incredibly biased and has lost all objectivity. Assessments are incredibly dishonest, lazy and quite unfair. I don't know how he is allowed around a classroom of impressionable young minds. This professor more so works for the DNC than that of UVU.
Dr. DeSart is a veteran professor who knows what he wants out of his classes. He tries to tie in his Boomer humor to keep the class interested which can be cringey or funny. If you attend class, take notes on his slides, and do all the quizzes (which follow the book chapters exactly) and you won't have a problem in any of his classes.
Jay really is an expert in his field, problem is he isn't great at teaching the material. He often makes it more complicated than it needs to be and it trips students up. Quiz and test questions are very poorly worded and are very intentionally trying to confuse students. He is accessible and will help if you ask but he really isn't a good teacher.
Desart really knows the subject matter but teaches in a very arrogant and condescending way. He doesn't do a great job critiquing submitted work, which makes future work more difficult. The subject matter is really interesting but Jay doesn't do a great job portraying that. I would probably take your chances with Steven Sylvester if you can.
If you want to learn nothing and taking meaningless quizzes, then take this class. He makes you take a five-question quiz every week. Even after reading the chapter, you will have no idea how to answer the quiz questions. Take this class from literally anyone else.
Terrible online teacher. Take this class from another teacher if you can. Weekly quizzes are nearly impossible and tests are very detailed. Good luck
I have no idea what other people are talking about here. I took US Presidency online and it was such an informative yet easy class. You have a 5 question quiz for every chapter that is extremely easy and everyone gets 5/5. The study guides prepare you perfectly for the test. I spent about 30 minutes on this class a week and got an A easily.
I took Political Analysis 1&2 with Dr. DeSart and feel he did a great job transitioning the class online. If you watch the video lectures, the quizzes will be fairly easy. You certainly have to study to do well on the exams, but they aren't bad. Personally, I did not find the textbook super helpful nor critical to passing the class.
Dr. DeSart is awesome. He had easy to follow lecture videos and readings, and had easy assignments that helped us learn the material. He also had very helpful review videos for each of the exams, quizzes and assignments. He has a quirky sense of humor that made the readings and videos more enjoyable. He also was very quick to answer my questions.
Professor DeSart is one of the best professors at UVU (especially with how he has handled online courses). If you watch the short lecture videos he posts and take some notes you will get an A. I never opened the textbook and easily got an A so it isn't necessary to buy. If you want more feedback he will always respond to emails.
I really enjoyed my class with DeSart. He made pretty good lecture videos and the readings were pretty good. The class consisted of reading quizzes and like three tests including the final which where all open book/note. If you took good lecture notes you'll be fine on the tests. I wrote verbatim what he said on the essay questions and got full pts
This is the best online class I've taken. He has really perfected teaching this material. I learned so much and liked that we could take notes on lecture videos at our own pace. The 2nd half of semester gets pretty tough material wise. He was easy to meet with for extra help. Really wants students to understand material AND do well in the class.
Honestly his class was hard but not necessarily in a bad way. I thought he explained everything well and was good with checking in with students. It's definitely a class you need to be focused for however.
DeSart is an amazing professor!! The Political Analysis course is difficult but very well structured. His lectures are clear and he is always available to help. There was a textbook required for the class that was a guide to the software we used in class. I got by without it and watched youtube tutorials. This class is hard work but rewarding!!
I had a really hard time in this course, but he was always very understanding, accommodating, and willing to help me through any tough concepts. Don't let the course get the better of you. If you reach out and ask for his help, you will do well.
Dr. DeSart's class isn't easy but I had no trouble managing it despite being in the middle of my busiest semester. Whenever I got confused, I could usually figure things out by reconsulting the class resources, or emailing him. I recommend taking 3000 with him over Professor Sylvester since you will learn a lot more due to the clearer expectations.
This was a harder online course given the statistical analysis side of it. The professor was consistently prepared for any questions or concerns a student may have. He was extremely professional and his directions are very detailed and clear (READ THEM ALL). He was very funny and inserted a lot of jokes throughout his material which was engaging.
He has very funny lectures, and makes several jokes. The jokes, however, don't interrupt the learning though, which is easy and simple to learn at times. He does like to trip you up though in the assignments sometimes. The textbook is also almost useless though.
Prof DeSart's class is challenging but rewarding. Lectures are clear and he's always available to help. unstuck AI was great for exam prep. Take this class, not Sylvester's.
DeSart is hilarious and you can tell he loves research. He tries to make the info as easy to follow as possible, and gives good feedback if you don't understand something. Not a breezy class, you have to work and keep up, but definitely a fair teacher.
Truly the worst Professor at UVU. He only wants to get his students in trouble. Many of his lectures are from years ago. He never messaged me back and would grade so late in the semester. He is the Dean for my major which makes it worse. I can't seem to get rid of him. All the good Professor in this program leave UVU and leaves us stuck with him.
