Better than expected

It's a pretty one-sided class. All his opinion, all the time.
Somewhat arrogant and very obviously biased. The course is relatively easy to get through, just not exactly enjoyable.

He'll like you...as long as you share his opinions about everything. And don't expect to get a good grade unless he likes you.
I'm not sure I've ever known someone more arrogant for less reason than this guy.
Rush Limbaugh with pretensions of science.
An overall terrible class. He taught what he thought was important. Even if he asked for your opinion, he really didn't want it.

I guess I'm in the minority, but I thought his PS305 was pretty interesting. But easy.
He talks all in jargon, trying to sound smart, and posts far too many useless notes.
Yikes! What a waste of money this class was. The material was exciting and the books well chosen, but Jay was about as unhelpful and uninsightful as he could be. It wasn't his politcs that bothered me, It was his seeming desdain for this students.
I CANNOT stand this man. He tries to sound so intelligent.
A little boring, a little bland...but the class is pretty easy. I've seen much worse.
"i should get started" his microphone blow to test it out. what is there not to love about jay dow. i even named my chia pet after him.
jay dow is hotttt
This was one of the most enjoyable classes I had all semester. Although I fell asleep a couple times it wasnt because of him. Keep up the good job Jay. You rock!
mumblin', bumblin', stumblin'
I did not like his class. I did not like his readings. I did not like his lectures. I did not like him. Go figure.
Worst. Professor. Ever.
Gah. Just Gah. Class format doomed it from the beginning; his style doesn't help.
His class wasn't too difficult. He's a nice man but just an average lecturer. I felt like he repeated the same points over and over throughout the semester and could have summed up everything in a couple weeks worth of classes. Just not a very deep thinking type of person.
I didn't think it was that bad. He just goes wayyy too fast. He doesn't get things either. People were coughing on cue today. In big groups. So he quotes Animal House. What?

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!
yeah this class or professor really is just ridiculous
He's so funny but not, but really knows what he's talking about
He thinks he is hillarious, and he definitely wants everyone to fail.
This guy knows a lot. His classes are hard but its COLLEGE, do a little studying! I was a screw off and still got a B by being interested in what he said and listening. Just make sure to show up or you will miss a lot of info!!!!
Thinks he is funny. And, well, he isn't. Basically, I hate this class, and I WAS excited with it.
Class wouldnt be so bad if he told us what was going to be on the midterms. I hate studying 20 hrs for 50 questions and realiziing I studyied the wrong stuff...
He's pretty random, but the class isn't that hard. Just show up, take notes and pay attention and you can't fail...unless you're just stupid. I've never read for the class and I'm still doing OK, just b/c of good notes. Lecture DOES get boring, but the class overall is not too bad.
Professor Dow is a great teacher. I think this has been my most interesting class this semester. Although it's a little tough, if you pay attention and read all that's on the sylabus you will do fine. Lectures are interesting and he's very intelligent. I enjoyed this class.
Horrible, Tests are very hard, they cover so much material, and you don't know whats on the test and what isn't!
He is sooo hard and can kinda be a jerk. If you take his class, watch out for the way he words his tests...thats where he gets ya!
This is the hardest class ive taken in my 1 1/2 yrs at mizzou. He talks way over everybody's head and usess big words just so he can sound smart. I studied harder for this class than i have for any other class i've taken and i have a C avg on his tests. AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS IT WILL RUIN YOUR GPA! Jay Dow is the devil incarnate.
Dow is not as bad as many of the people list him to be. He is extremely smart in this subject which can intimidate some people. His language is hard to follow but you get used to it after a few classes and can follow pretty well. I appreciated Dow when he was sick and we had a crappy replacement when compared to him. Overall, hes a decent teacher.

Dow is not a bad teacher, especially if you keep up with the readings throughout the semester. His tests are a little difficult, but you can get an A if you have read in a timely manner and then skim through before tests. He can be dismissive during his office hours, though.
This class was much harder than I thought it'd be. He's very easy to talk to during office hours but doesn't give you much advice on studying. I learned to read chapters and take notes on them as well. I ended up w/a B in that class luckily. This is definitely not a class you'll breeze thru unless you're a poly sci major!
material is quite interesting. however, although he seems like a really nice guy, tries to act too smart. doesn't realize the capacity of his audience. book should help with this.
READ THE TEXT AND GO TO CLASS! His tests are pretty hard but it all comes from lecture and the text. This class was much more difficult than I had expected. He's a smartass and wont' stand for talking in class, cell phones, or any thing besindes notes on a lap top. I suggest you find someone else as your poli sci professor!
he sux!
His class was so difficult and you had to keep up with all of the reading and try to write as quickly as possible b/c I swear he could be a great auctioneer. He talks so fast so if you have any other options for a professor, TAKE THEM!
Dow's a good professor who knows what he's talking about. When you see people complaining about not being able to take notes, he gives a lot of things that you can easily sum up in a few words. The class is pretty easy if you get into a study group with people who go everyday. His old tests can be found at any frat/sorority with similar questions.
While he may be a little on the strange side, hes a great guy who knows ALOT about what hes talking about.
He definantly expects you to learn the material he presents to you. His test are only are hard if you do not go to class or read the readings. They can be alot easier if you can obtain and old test and use it for a study guide. He was a good professor that knows what he is talking about.
Class is hard. He expects you to learn a LOT of information and doesn't give you much direction on what specifically is most important. Comes off very very very very very arrogant--so much that it makes me not stand the guy. I would pick another teacher..
He made you work but it was a good class.
He's a very smart teacher with the tendency to talk over the heads of an 1100 class. Seems pompous but knowledgeable. Study hard and do all the reading if you want a good grade, this guys tough.
Was extremely knowledgeable, interesting and funny professor. Best class I have taken at Mizzou so far. Don't understand what the difficulty was, studied night before the test and got the highest grade. I highly recommend Professor Dow.
Quite possibly the most arrogent, bias professor at Mizzou. Ironic that he teaches political science. Turned me away from pursuing a minor in political science and made for a HORRIBLE first semester class freshman year. Go find someone else who will actually care about your education. Jay Dow is a joke.
Yes, he's arrogant but he knows his stuff. His lectures can be a bit boring and you have to attend if you're taking one of his upper level classes. Tests are fair- his election campaign class if worth taking
This class was fine, not hard at all. If you get an old copy of the test, you'd literally have to TRY to fail. Went to class, got extra-credit, was let out early on nice days and got an A. Dow was cool, too. As a first-semester freshman, probably one of the easiest classes I took.
For my first semester of college. I enjoyed this class a ton and sparked my interest in political science a ton so much so that i have added a poly sci minor. He may talk over the heads of some students but its college, and was very easy to comprehend. the tests were easy, i got an A- with no effort at all.
AVOID THIS CLASS AT ALL COSTS, I was very good at poli sci all throughout highschool and was qualified for a way higher course than this. Jay Dow will ask the most random questions on his tests that pertain to nothing he ever talked about or was mentioned in the book.
He is really arrogant and gives pop quizzes on days that no one shows up. His tests are really hard, I even studied old ones from sororities/frats and still came out with a C average. He assigns readings from a book that is completely irrelevant to the lectures but puts it on the test anyway. I loved Poli sci in highschool but he made me hate it.
HATED THIS CLASS WITH A PASSION!! Dow is an arrogant **** and does not give two****s about anyone but himself. His tests were terribly hard. The only good thing about this class was that his final was the EASIEST thing I have ever taken. Around 80% of the final were questions from the 3 midterms word for word.
I know Dow can seem arrogant at times, but he knows the material very well. And he has a great passion for teaching American Government. I had him in American Government, and now I'm currently taking my capstone with him. He may be arrogant, but that's life, get over it and learn from someone who knows what they're talking about.
My first university class. I thought it was a pretty good experience. I like that he puts a strong emphasis on knowing the constitution. Its a core of American politics and many don't completely understand it. Go to class because he will give a quiz if he see attendance is low. Pretty funny guy, but i can see why some might not like him.
Tests are very hard compared to what is covered in lecture and the book. Pop quizzes are apparently not only over politics, but also over anything and everything in the New York Times. Thinks he is funny but isn't. Quite possibly the worst thing I have to get up for at 8.
Hard tests for me, but that is b/c I cramm 2 days before. Keep up with the textbook, b/c he won't tell you but then put it on the test. Class is boring b/c it's at 8am. Tries to be funny and sometimes is. He rolls a die every morning and if it's a 1/6 your in luck b/c there is a quiz and I don't study everyday so I get 1 out of 3's on those. Study!
Class is not that exciting but you should go whenever you can manage to wake up at 8am because of his pop quizes. His tests are somewhat challenging but if you put in the time, you will be fine. Overall, I would say that he loves what he teachs. I would take this class with him again.
What I consider my first class, Dow was a pretty cool guy to have it with. Most important thing is going to class and taking notes;got a C- on my first test and still ended up with an A. It taught me how to prepare. He will let you fail, but also keeps it loose. The textbook is expensive but needed; try to share one with someone. Lectures are key.
He explains things well the class is just hard as hell
Definitely more of a workload than I expected with this class. You are required to read ALL of the assigned readings. As long as you take good notes and do the readings tests are fairly easy. Go to class- gives occasional quizzes.
Lectures are interesting, but the tests are difficult and he does not give out study guides. There is a lot of material, do not expect higher than a B, class averages on exams were low B range.
Reading and attending the lectures are a must. Take notes because the tests are 50% lecture and 50% readings. He may come off as sarcastic but he is nice if you come knowing your stuff.
Dow is very full of himself and annoys me more than anyone. This is not an easy class but as long as you go to class, take good notes and read everything you should do fine on the tests. There is a lot of reading in this class and its hard to keep up with it. This class requires a lottttttt of studying.
annoying and arrogant teacher. Him and his TA's told me to study "word for word" what the constitution says. I bombed the first test after learning what his tests are all about. Go to class and study readings.
Jay Dow knows what he's talking about, and enjoys talking about the government. As someone who wasn't originally that interested in government, he made it interesting. Definitely go to all the classes and at least skim the readings, especially bolded terms and the quizzes at the end of chapters. Taking notes by hand helps a lot. Pay attention.
Go to every class, take notes by hand, at least skim the readings, pay attention, and you'll be fine. Dow knows what he's talking about and is interesting to listen to. I've learned a lot and am now more interested in government. Tests can be difficult, but if you really pay attention, you'll do fine.
Hate this class so much. Dow is incredibly conceited and often degrades his students. He honestly doesn't care about their grades. Take the class, just choose a different professor. Listen to me. The worst college course I've ever taken.
Stay Away! I honestly have no clue how you could like this class. He is very knowledgeable but is an awful teacher and a jerk. Tests are insane and studying for his tests are hard as well. He has no clarity on what he wants you to know. Only class I received below a B on in college.
Tough class. Come to class take notes and pay attention. If you do that, you'll do fine. He has a zero tolerance policy for technology use that is not used for note taking. So no facebook. Learned a lot.
This has been the hardest class that I have taken thus far. His tests are insane, you have no clue what exactly is going to be one them, besides what you've gone over in class (which is everything). I didn't care for politics or government but after taking this class with Dow, I have come to appreciate it very much. He is a truly passionate teacher
if you love yourself and value your livelihood in any capacity, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Only 3 tests and a final exam but the exams cover weeks of info and are only 35 questions and he never does reviews/lets you know what will be on the test. no notes or powerpoint online either. PP slides are vague so u have to be pretty engaged to get good notes
As someone with an interest in political sciences I really enjoyed this class but it was tough. Its very important to go to the lectures and to ask questions for clarity. Dow knows what he is talking about but can be very pompous at times. Personally I did well without reading but thats rare. If you pay attention in lectures you should be fine.
toughest class I've ever taken. do not recommend to anyone
really knowledgable of the material. lectures are just reviews of the reading. there is a lot of reading but you don't need to read them if you pay attention in class. only 3 test and a final. seems intimidating at first but is just a review of high school government with a little more detail and focus on the constitution. The TAs help more.
his lectures are almost impossible to understand, but you have to attend because he lectures about things that aren't in the readings that will be on the tests. tests include an essay. whenever I've gone to him for help he wasn't too helpful and treats his students like they're idiots and is super arrogant.
Funny guy, makes lots of bad jokes but they're usually worth a laugh clearly passionate about what he does. Didn't think it was a horribly difficult course. finished with a B by only going to lecture. Would recommend reading.
Dow can seem intimidating and uncaring at first, but he is just passionate about what he does. Won't care if you come to class, but should because most material is in lecture and slides are not posted to blackboard. If you need help with something serious he is extremely helpful. If you are confused about materials see a TA.
Dow really knows what he is teaching and his passion for the material is obvious. He comes across at tough because he really wants you to learn what he teaches. I use the material I learned in his class frequently, he's a great teacher.
Very passionate about his research and teaching but overall just a jerk. Jumps right into all the topics and provides us with little background knowledge to help us follow along. Grading is based on 4 exams and that is it. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS
Jay is not a cool guy. He is self-absorbed and extremely arrogant. You can tell he feels as though he is extremely superior to the students of his lecture. Disrespectful to students during class and inconsiderate of effort. He doesn't use tegrity so if you are sick I would recommend attempting receive multiple students notes if you miss a lecture.
Boring and arrogant. He gives off the feeling that he believes he's superior to all of his students.
He's a fine professor, but definitely expects a lot from you. The reason I find the class difficult is because of my lack of interest on the subject. History classes have never been my thing.
This is a tough class, but Jay Dow knows his stuff. His lectures are interesting and he really is interested in what he is teaching.
Lectures are absolutely terrible to sit through and he walks around like he owns the place. Very smart guy, but very arrogant and cocky. Never know what he'll test you over so if you take this class you should study 5-6 days in advance of an exam.
Grade is determined by three midterms and a final, that's it. Attending lectures are important, as a lot of exam questions are taken exclusively from them. Dow is passionate about what he teaches, but this can lead him to fly through the material without giving you any context and causes him to give off an arrogant attitude at times.
Dow is very intelligent and gives good lectures if you listen closely to everything he is saying, although it can make you sleepy. He can come off as intimidating, but if you work for a good grade, it's less bothersome. Read the assigned readings and don't skip because all of the exams are based off the lectures, which he doesn't post online.
I like professor Dow's lectures. It was really interesting to take his class while an election was going on, so if you have the chance to take the class during midterm elections, I would recommend it.
You have to be there for every lecture or else you will miss a lot of notes. I would just skim through the chapters we were supposed to read the day before the test and that seemed to work for me. I think the class had 3 or 4 test, but I can't remember exactly. Almost all questions on the test came from lecture with a few coming from the book.
Study and pay attention. He has been doing this for years and hundreds of students have passed his class. It is doable, trust me, you just can't wait to the last minute to study for exams
Jay Dow is one of my favorite professors at the University of Missouri, as he is engaging and knowledgeable about his field. I understand that many people perceive Dow as a strict, but this perception is most likely from students who he taught in large lecture halls, in which being strict is oftentimes required. In small classes, he is a great guy.
Jay is really a personable guy. Is super passionate about history and cares for each one of his students, even though being in a lecture hall full of 300+ students.
He gives 3 midterms and a final. No other work. No study guides or any kind of guidance. During class he makes very rude comments to the students if they ask questions and he is just overall very arrogant.
Literally don't take this class - worst decision of my life. Dow is very rude, is one of those teachers that uses powerpoints but the slides only have like 3 words on them. Doesn't give out study guides for tests, doesn't curve, You will fail this class if u take it DONT TAKE ITTTTTTT :) :(
I <3 Professor Dow
Jay Dow is very passionate about what he teaches, which can come across as ignorant or rude, but he's a genuinely good guy. He adds humor to his lectures that could easily be super dry. You have to go to lectures if you want to do well on tests, will take attendance 3 Fridays. Hard class, take other guy instead, no final and kids get better grades.
No extra credit opportunities in comparison to other professors, unclear about grades until after finals (will drop you around an entire letter grade). Save yourself the hassle and find a different professor.
he is rude and disrespectful. his tests are nothing like what you have learned. dont take his class.
Felt as if he would rather see the class fail than succeed. Constantly felt as if it was him against the class. Take this class with any other professor and it should be a breeze.
Do NOT take Pol Sci 1100 with Dow. Your grade will drop without you or anyone else in the class knowing at the end of the semester because of how he weighs it. Every other professor that teaches this class makes the final extra credit, and he is just rude to people who try to participate in class.
Okay, he is a really easy professor IF he knows you. Go to his office and talk with him, become friends with him. You do not have to go to all of his classes but when you do go talk a lot. If he knows your name you will get a good grade. Just show or at least pretend you care about what you are learning.
Professor Dow is phenomenal. The class consists of members reading the necessary texts out loud. Beyond that, there is one test concerning Constitutional knowledge and then 4 essays and participation. Dr. Dow brings awesome stories and good humor to the class. If you are still concerned about a high grade, literally just go to his office hours...
If you don't show up to lectures, you will not pass. His humor during class comes off as rude occasionally and I found myself afraid to answer questions... I have to emphasize you must read every single thing assigned and come to class. I've heard other 1100 teachers are a lot easier so I'd avoid his if you're not going to try!
I'm taking 4190 with Professor Dow right now and it is a really interesting class! He is a good lecturer and explains things well. There are a lot of papers and you will not get a rubric unless you go to his office hours. Attendance is mandatory and you will not do well on the papers if you don't go to class
Professor Dow's class is intense, but engaging. Attending lectures is a must - he moves quickly, but his passion shines through. Utilize the textbook and study tools like unstuck AI to stay on top of the material. Manage your time well, and you'll do great.
Dr. Dow is a very sweet guy. He also is the most confusing grader in the world. I consistently received the same feedback that I had no thesis regardless of how I moved or phrased it, and eventually resorted to bolding it so he would see where it was. There's a lot of reading, but as long as you pay attention in class its fine- I suggest annotating
Prof. Dow is a clear instructor. A lot of the work is done in class, and he lectures in a very easy to follow, articulate style. He stays in the intellectual mainstream — you'll read for standard interruption, and very rarely encounter critique of the Founders.
Super sweet guy, 3 midterms and a final & if you do not read the textbook, you are so incredibly cooked. Visit him for office hours and if you score bad on a test, make sure you see him ASAP for help and he will give you tips on how to do better next time. All and all, he's a great guy, lock in for his class though.
