goes on & on about himself; loves 2 talk about nothing
he's alright and is very knowledgeable once you get to know him
unless your Dr. Spock, he won't notice you
The guys knows a lot and has watched more tv than I ever have. Good guy, you just have to relate to him.
star trek, star trek and star trek. nice guy, but I skipped most of the classes.
Class is a 3 hour showcase of his previous essays and work. His streams of consciousness are impossible to follow, and his obsession with Asian culture might be tolerable if it had ANYTHING to do with the course. BE WARNED - YOU WILL BE BORED!!!
I thought it was "popular culture and canadian practice in Canada", but all we talk about was China and Anime. Never again!
He will find some way to make the class you take with him evolve around asian culture and anime cartoons. Seriously, anything at all. Nice guy, but needs to teach what he is paid to.

Communication and Ideology my butt! More like Anime and StarTrek! The man is obsessed with Asian culture--definitely an orientalist! Classes extremely boring, essays not too bad but don't expect clear answers to any of your questions!
Consisted of 2 essays (and partic) only. I went to every class and got an A final - specifically points you in the direction of where your essay should go. Participate in class and he'll love you. And for the record, I'm not Asian or a Star Trek fan!
Great prof, good class
really amazing, totally helpful, actually takes an interest in helping students
Worst prof ever!!! All we talked about was china, which is fine, except that's not what this class is supposed to be about!!!! DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. SAVE YOURSELF!!!!! RUN AWAY!!!!!!
Helpful, approachable, and really knows his stuff. Likes to relate alot of the ideas of Mcluhan to Asian culture but does so in an appropriate manner.
Nice guy, a little confusing, but really knows what he teaches. Typical academic, always caught up in his research. Always willing to help out his students!
Some comments here say he helps his students, well he does, the ones he likes! He has a select group of students that he likes and he mainly talks to them, and that's it! Seriously, he's a bad prof!
Pop Culture, not so much. Entire class was based on the Asian influence on North American culture. Fun if your an anime freak, but if your interested in pop culture in general, stay clear of this course. BUT he is a pretty easy marker + assignments r easy
Not very clear, but not a hard marker. He tells you what he expects for exams. Overall a good prof. He makes the class interesting. Doesn't go by book but teaches you all that you need to know.
Dry, and rambles off topic consistently. Pop culture fiend... knows every movie from 1920 onwards and constantly cites them as if everyone else has seen them all! Not a bad guy, but boring and consistently off topic. Useless for a prof.
Useless
worse prof ever..all he talks about is McLuhan..and its soooooooooooooo boringg!!!!
I've taken a class of his from the Social Science, Soci., Huma., and Pol. Sci. departments over the year's and he uses the same material in all of his classes! I even handed in the same paper for three of the courses and received marks from a C+ to an A for the same paper! He's not paying attention.
The worst.
Extremely helpfull, and creates a solid environment to learn on a very deep level about dense theories. Great professor I would wish they'd hire more profs like him!
Follows a logically flow that progresses throughout the course. He truly cares about his students/passionate.
He repeats the same material in all his classes. He shows films constantly and expects you to relate it to the material and to the vague concepts but doesn't explain it. He doesn't have office hours and it is very hard to get a hold of him. His class is boring, he doesn't give expectations for assignments and/or tests. VERY HARD TO STUDY for his cl
He is the worst prof ever,if a wall could talk,it would probably explain better than him.He has no expertise in his teaching at all.
HE IS A GOOD PROF. his assigenments and exams are easy because he gives you clues throughout the year on whats on the midterm and finals.
A genuinely nice prof. He gives great lectures. I would recommend his classes to anyone. He is very helpful toward his students too. A very smart prof!
well travelled but a talker. class was way too easy to pass without going. tends to only communicate with students he knows personally. assignments are vague.
This class should be called "THE EAST: Philosophy and some Pop.Cult."..If you are looking for a class that compares/contrasts East&West POPULAR CULTURE, this one only looks at Eastern philosophy (Daoism, Buddhism).. oh, and for some reason the prof thinks all his students can understand chinese/japanese characters without suffice explanation.
Yes I agree, it's misleading to call this classs "Popular Cultures:East and West".. maybe popular CULTURE (singular), based on the East(China,Japan,Korea)- If you're into the East and Eastern philosophy then defintely take this class. But if you're into pop cult. from a Communications perspective - then Run! Run faaaar away from this class!!!
Prof. Very unclear about expectations. Plays CLEAR favourites with people who have been in his class before. Lectures are very unhelpful. The class was not pop cultures east and west .. it was Pop culture : East. Bad Prof. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU HAVE TO
An amazing prof. the assignments are easy, easy marker, all you do in class is watch amazing movies, and talk about them, and write an essay on them, I didn't buy 1 book, just watched the movies, particiapted, and had a lot of fun. My fav. prof in all of York. Its a guarnteed B if you do all the work.
Just because he likes previous students and prefers the East doens't make him a bad prof. He's amazing, knows his stuff and genuinely tries to get students involved in what he teaches. If you don't have an interest, you won't find it interesting. I know nothing about anime, Japanese culture, or Chinese characters, but you don't see me complaining.
I think he's great.. he's obviously quite intelligent and you have to apply your brain for once to get honoured a good mark! He's actually been extremely helpful to me, and is always pleasant and tries his best to connect with the student. Try to do the work every week, try to maintain somewhat of a relationship with him and you'll do fine guys
amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing u dont even have to really read the texts ust understand and listen to him and participate and he'll looveeeeeeeeee you
very nice prof
Fantastic Professor! This guy knows how to demonstrate his years of experience by making use of texts and films that really exemplify the concepts relating to the course. The readings are a little much but at least the evaluations are not too excruciating, although they do require enough critical thinking. I highly recommend this great professor.
If you want to pay your tuition to watch movies that you could watch at home for free, and if you want to learn a few things about words from Greek and Chinese, and basically nothing else. then this course is the one you you... (you can always hope that maybe you'll get a good TA!)
Self indulgent. Has a lisp. Has his own theories that are inaplicable to the course. Makes you watch movies half the time. Even his tutors laugh at him.
His class, surprisingly, became became interesting in the end.
Ask him a question and see for yourself how smart he is...
I was looking forward to intro to sosc but prof goulding is such a waste of 3 hours lectures and money! I hope you first years will think before taking a class with him, attend a lecture before you choose him and you'll know what I'm talking about :( sorry to disappoint but it's the truth and somebody needs to do something about this..seriously :(
Judging by the comments, Jay Goulding is a professor you either hate or like. His anti-empirical pedagogical method may be difficult to grasp for those not used to a philosophical approach to the social sciences. That said, he is very knowledgable and passsionate about what he teaches; he can even read classical Japanese, an impressive feat.
Great professor who is extremely knowledgeable. You just have to come to class and actually listen to what he's saying. People who think he's boring and doesn't now his stuff are either plain stupid and didn't understand anything or were too busy doing something else to listen to his lectures.
He's boring.. Lord have mercy. You'll cry in the lecture. Fairly easy though...
Worst prof, lectures are totally pointless and random. Horrible teaching style. Very unclear about what important points we will be tested on, although the test review sheets he gave were great. Class was easy enough but so boring and I didn't learn anything.
Jay is a great professor! As long as you go to class and pay attention you will do fine. He hands out a test review with the exact same test question 7 days before the test. He also gives clear hints as to what will be on the test. I enjoyed his lectures!
He is a good prof.
I was not enrolled in the class and but attended due to the amount of wisdom he was giving his students. His style of teaching is very intellectually stimulating, he goes "beyond the books" and teaches students something very useful in school and life, that is "How to learn". It is up to the student to learn it or not. Great Prof, very wise.
Most Awesome Outstanding Professor! Should they hire more like him. The way he demonstrate his theory and philosophy are charming simple but leave deep influence into your soul. Great combination! Learning is so enjoyable just like a breathing. Too simple to be undervalued. Empty yourself, you will fill a lot by his knowledge and wisdom!
He is very friendly and approachable, also very helpful if you ask for help. A bit boring and unclear, tends to ramble about random stuff. Overall I would highly recommend this professor and this course
Very nice man, but horrible, absolutely terrible prof. I was interested in the material...before I entered this class. If you don't regurgitate everything he says in lecture on your test, you won't get more than a B-, it's his way or the highway. This class brought my GPA down hard, and I'm an overall good student; take this class at your own risk.
Prof Goulding seems like a really nice man, but I didn't really get his teaching style. He is very confusing and unclear, and liked to go off on a lot of random tangents, which made a lecture hard to follow. I had to rely SOLELY on tutorials and my TA in order to understand what the hell was happening in this class.
If you are interested in the Asian and Western philosophy take this class. He is amazing professor.
Wonderful professor and friend. If you want a professor who invests in the material and you take this course. Unorthodox approach to soc sc. He guides you to think inside, outside and around the box until there is no box. Course encourages independent and explorative thought and breaks you free from drone like, passive thinking.
Prof. Jay likes giving fractions of information here and there, more like pieces of unresolved puzzle. Then expects you to reconstruct those pieces of information to something that makes sense to him, which is okey if only he was more clear. However, the course materials are not helpful at all. It feels like am in a Philosophy or a History class.
Dude is out there. Seems like a nice enough guy. Terrible teacher though. Thank god for TA's
Take his online course, you'll pass in your sleep. He is a more than fair marker.
he knows what he is talking about, he is experienced and he makes philosophy seem easy with on point and on time explanations, on exam write down what he said and you get A and B. not to mention SOCS1000 is relatively a unique experience and he enhances it.
He is a terrible professor. More than awful. He simply does not make sense. He is all over the place. He keeps talking about things that have nothing to do with the course.
His passion for the course just makes you interested. He is unbelievably knowledgeable. Lectures can be very confusing. He is a gem, he sees the world in a unique way and not many profs like him are left. This course changes your view of the world. I did much better close to the end of the year when I got used to his teaching style. TAs are great.
Had him for intro to social science. Strange class because it felt more like a mix of greek myths & philosophy. Attend lectures and actually listen! he gives you exam questions in advance, and gives you all the answers in class. If you don't show up you will not know what you are doing. TA's help a lot.
One of the best professor I ever had in York
Awesome teacher. Very interesting man
Professor Jay Goulding is the definition of a true academic. He is extremely devoted to what he does, he goes beyond his way to help students succeed, and his classes are easy A's. He is really an intelligent and sophisticated man, the only problem is that they don't make his kind anymore. Take the chance while you got it, he will inspire you.
When I was in Dr. Jay's class, we had to do two 40% essays... He's actually very caring and will help you clarify any questions or concerns you have about it. He also gives good feedback. But please note!: His lectures are heavy and can be dry at times, his writing is hard to read... But he does show some movies in class :D
Great prof
Amazing professor. Would recommend!
Dr. Jay Goulding is one of the most respected professors at York University. His teachings are very inspirational and he is overall an honest guy. Those who do there work and readings get the mark they deserve and those who cheat and conduct in plagiarism get the worse consequences because its not fair for hard workers
Dr. Jay's teachings are very inspirational. Overall best professor I had at York University. I would recommend this course and also the SOSC 1000 to all students that are interested in a combination of many subjects. This course is perfect for students looking to add to their electives.
Amazing
Dr. Jay is one of the many great professors York has ever had. He is well respected, his lectures are so inspirational that his classes are packed. Infact I had to get special permission to enroll in his class because there was no spots avail. Anyways, I took SOSC1000 last year and it was great, learned alot and this year taking 3000 level course.
Professor Goulding is unique and gifted. He can blow your mind, and also can help students gain perspective on their own life. He will help open your eyes and introduce you to new methods of understanding.
Seminar classes are where Dr Goulding shines. What you learn will benefit you in life after graduating. Very insightful; Unusual teaching style, but highly engaging. Professor Goulding inspires and calms his students by giving plenty of space to think.
Meh professor, meh class. I've met so many better professors over my time in York. Grading criteria is clear; the content is a bore and very difficult to understand for an intro to philosophy course. Low grade was due to apathy for the class and not attending. Take this course for an easy A if you're willing to put more than minimal effort.
Jay is a well respected professor. He really cares for his students. However, his teaching confuses many, including myself. He jumps from subject to subject often. His hand writing is not the best and can barely read it on the board, thus means you need to pay attention and listen. For his tests, they are provided at the beginning of the course.
Jay is an incredibly knowledgable and kind prof. However his area of specialization (daoist phenomenology) is quite esoteric, so his seminars will appeal most to students with prior knowledge of classics and philosophy. His lectures are largely unstructured, so students without appreciation for improvisation should steer clear.
He is a very caring Prof, you can always ask him questions and he will help u. If you took his SOSC 1000 course it is basically the same lessons and all. We use the same books as then. We had three essays to do, which were book reports. If you do not show up to class you still have a huge chance of passing. We watched a lot of movies and cartoons.
Dr. Jay is one of the kindest and compassionate professors at York U. He made the course material engaging during a difficult time such as the Covid-19 pandemic. His classes were profound, he made the material easy to understand and always left you wondering for more. I enjoyed this class and all the assignments were engaging. I highly recommend!
We did 2 book reviews and then the third was axed because of COVID 19. Pretty easy to do well he just let us study what we were passionate about.
Dr. Jay is such an amazing and well-respected professor. He lets you write about anything you want as long as you connect it with some course themes. Dr. Jay gives such kind feedback and is always willing to help you and very quick to respond to your emails. He made such a difficult concept easy and engaging to learn. I 100% recommend his courses!
Dr. Jay YOU'RE THE ABSOLUTE BEST!!! With his seminars you will 100% learn and have a whole new outlook on understanding etymological aspects of words. His essay "The Copper Rule" is just ingenious. I heavily recommend his classes. Sadly I didn't also take his SOSC 4003 and I'm graduating :(
Just do the Paper!
Dr. Goulding is the best Professor at York University without a doubt. He would take us to drink coffee and speak about any challenges we are facing. anyone who mention that his courses was confusing were the very same people who took his kindness for weakness and not show up to their classes nor did the readings. Like myself many others can relate
Dr. Jay is awesome! Lectures lowkey kinda long, alot about personal experiences in his field of study and work, but it's insightful/interesting! Lots about philosophical perceptions and language in different texts! No eclass/slides = all authentic lol, 2 essays in course (40% each), participation is 20% (don't gotta be there all the time tho!)
My experience with Dr Jay was a very good one! He was always caring and willing to listen to what you had to say. He was the only prof I have ever met thus far, that would actively talk to students outside of class. Dr Jay's classes have about 30-35 people and he would always find something to connect with other students about. Overall great prof!
