He gets upset if you miss class. Do the H problems will get a B at least.
If he does not like you, you are not getting an 'A'
u need to play teacher's pet. his curve is ok tho
Not the best acc teacher but not the worse either. A bit unorganized, cranky, and picky in class, but friendly and helpful if you talk to him one on one. Tests are difficult because you can't use calculators!!!
Very fair and knows what he's talking about.
His Curb is great! He's very strict in class. Don't even think about talking. Absolutely no cell phones, he'll kick you out. Overall an intelligent professor that knows his accounting.
Lectures a bit on factual stories as to why certain things are implemented to make understanding accounting a mess.It is interesting stuff to know but not tested on.He still tells you what you need to know for the test regardless. Good professor overall.
Tests are hard, especially because no calculators allowed. Doesnt return your tests. Uses his own examples in addition to the book, and includes problems on the test that are similar.
On the 1st day I heard there was no calculator, scantron write ins and thought oh no I'm going to fail! But I passed (thanks to his surprise curve he doesn't tell you about). Now I can calculate long division in my head fast!
Dr. Hirsch is one of the knowledgable professors for Acct. The tests are kind of challenging but are not irrelevant to what he covers in class. He is very helpful and friendly too. I took him for both 301A and B, and found him to be of my expectations.
Very clear on what he want students to know. Very helpful, however, the tests are a little bit challanging (but not impossible). Take this prof. if you want to learn something
one of the best teachers in the world. take his class you'll learn a lot.
An excellent professor. Intelligent; knowledgeable, and helpful. Even though the students ask him stupid questions, he never laughs at them. He is the most patient professor I’ve met. He likes to help and encourage student to learn more. He is a great
Great professor in all aspects! Lectures are interesting while clear and direct. Exams are relevant to topics discussed in class. He is always pleasant when I visit him at his office for homework questions.Overall, he's the best Accounting professor had
Good class for Accounting majors. Must attend class pay attention and do homework at least twice. Test are difficult and mistakes or errors not known. No need for calculator on test? Keep up with class examples and homework discussed in class. Don't forget to visit him during office hours!
A very nice person but doesn't do a good job of explaining the materials. 3 tests and they are pretty hard; most of them is from the notes in class. The 2nd test is the hardest. If u want to do well, u need to understand the notes clearly. At the end, he does have a curve.
Good Teacher! Take REALLY good notes and never miss a class. His tests are outlines of his lecture notes. If you take excellent notes and come to class EVERY meeting you will be fine. Don't worry about his no calculator rule. He won't ask any heavy calculations on a test.
If you are a aggresive studying student, Dr.Hirsch will be one teacher you must to take. Students who catch up each single class and study hard before the exam., then they will be getting at least B. Dr. Hirsch will not disappoint the students if they really study. Good luck.
Very Very Difficult teacher, but nice and helful. Does not teach out of the book, so it is worthless to buy. You have to be in class every day. Very difficult tests, but great curve.
Don't need to ever open textbook or do any homework. Just show up to class and take good notes. Review these notes well for the exams and you will be fine. The tests are very difficult. I got 40's on all of them, yet with his curve, I finished with a B. Take him.
I took him for 301B. Not bad, not good. Make sure to take good notes during the lectures because his tests are on his notes. Big Curve.
Very good teacher.Curve is very great.Take a good notes, go to his office make sure he recognizes you n show him your efforts then you will be fine. He's really helpful too.A++++
He's very clear on his notes. come to class, take good notes and study & understand these notes before the exam. and you should get at least a B. he has a really big curve. always try to pass students and always helpful. all his exams are based from the notes. take him..
I received my first C in his class, I am an A/B student. You must study what he does in class. His tests are nothing like the problems in his packet or the book so don't waste you time doing either. If you compare book solutions with his example, you will definately be confused. Don't waste your time, try another teacher.
I took him for both class 301A&B. He's an outstanding proffessor. He's very nice and very helpful. To become an A student in his class, you must take a good note, rewrite the note as much as you can,& you must be study hard but in the RIGHT way. The subjects that he teaches are selected and reliable. Tests are challenge and competitive. Take him.
He's a pretty diffcult professor. Explains things in ways you wouldn't really approach it. Great teacher, if You take him for A, you might as well take him for B. From what I've heard, his approach is a bit easier than the other professors. Nice curve, one project (piece of cake), and three very hard tests. Make sure you study your notes.
One word: Horrible. He takes pride in only one thing: Being right. All the time. This means that no matter how hard you try, to him, you will always be insignificantly stupid. He is confusing and rude. While students look for teachers to inspire them, this one strives only to turn you against the subject.
Dr. Hirsch is a great teacher and a fair grader. For both 301A and 301B, he stayed close to his notes in class and was very helpful during officer hours. His officer hours act as study sessions for students! Make sure you know the notes by heart and go to his study sessions!
ITS VERY IMPORTANT THAT STUDENTS UNDERSTAND HOW TO TAKE THIS GUY'S TESTS. HIS TEST ARE 80% BASED ON HIS LECTURE NOTES. SO TAKE VERY GOOD NOTES AND ATTEND EVERY CLASS! TO STUDY FOR HIS TESTS, STUDENTS SHOULD HAMMER ON HIS LECTURE NOTES AND GO TO THE TEXT FOR ANY OTHER INQUIRIES. HE'S ALSO VERY HELPFUL, SO GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH AND USE HIS OH's
Will not allow use of calculator. Felt the finals was more an elementary math class with all the manual calculations! Misses the required elements of an Accounting class - understanding concepts and application; not math skills please. Hope he realizes that he's testing the wrong skill set and allow the use of the calculator in future A/g classes.
He is a good teacher. The subject is not easy so you must study. Study only from his notes to prepare for exams, don't bother to brainstorm w/ the book. His exams are relevant to the notes, but careful with the wordings. Good luck. Highly recommended.
I passed his class somehow, but i went to every class and tried to study his notes. study from the notes then use the book only when necessary. I did poorly on all exams and got a C, so I think if you follow these guidelines then you should be fine.
DR. HIRSCH IS VERY KIND, POLITE AND GOOD TEACHER. HIS EXAMS ARE EXACTLY LIKE HIS NOTES EXCEPT NO CALCULATOR ALLOWED. I HAD DIFFICULTY WITHOUT THE CALCULATOR, I UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT BUT SOMETIMES WE GET STUCK WITH SIMPLE CALCULATIONS. YOU IF ARE LACKING MATH(DIVISION WITH LONG DIGITS) AVOID HIM.
Decent teacher. Very anal but clear in his lectures. Tests are tough but he curves. Never bought the book, just used his in class examples although I'd recommend to get it just in case. Go to class because he takes roll.
Great Teacher. Always willing to help in his office hours. 301a is the class that separates the Accounting majors from the wannabes. If you can handle this class and do well, then you picked the right major. If not, best of luck elsewhere. A's are definately possible, just put the time in! Study, study, study the notes.
A very strange professor & has stupid rules. His exams are very tough,NO calculator allowed,no scratch paper, which makes u spending too much time on calculation by hand and not doing the best.U cant view ur exam again,so u dont know if he grades u wrong or not,he grades on personal feeling on u,not based on score u got, very unfair teacher.
I passed.but dnt take him.His lecture is unclear, jumbing around.Limited off hrs, tons of students waiting 4 him.Has no patience to explain stuff to u.Dnt get too high grade on 1st exam, becoz he loves to see improvement,he is stupid,if u got lower grade on 2nd exam,he'll give u a C no matter how well u do in final.
Allows calculator in his Spring06 class. Beware, exams though multiple choice are set to confuse u! Has up to 10 choices for answers! So know your stuff and try not to look at answers. If u are sure, write answer separately on other page of scantron: Q#, answer.
I have taken 301a and 301b with this professor. although he did not allow the calculator, he is a genrous grader. In my opnion he is very professional and very polite. He explains well and above all he understands that the material is very difficult. I have courage and yet I took him for the 301b and he did allow the calculator however, his exams a
Cons: does not return exam paper/scantrons, only 15Qs on exam1, ea. question answered incorrectly drops u a grade, won't get points for assigned writing assignt or other HW, takes attendance. Pros: allows calculator for Spring06. Need I say more?
I think he is generous teacher and very polite.
This Guy knows his stuff and allows calculators but also seems like someone shoved a big stick up his ass because it seems as if he doesn't enjoy teaching, and if he did it would only be towards females and males that laugh at his lame ass jokes....For everyone else, they have to deal w/ his anal behavior and kiss his ass to get his full attention.
Lectures are boring like his jokes. Hates technology of any kind so don't let anything beep during class or he will look at you until your whole class looks at you.
THE best accounting teacher @ Fullerton. Highly recommended. It's a tough class but the teacher is extremelyyyyy helpful and polite.
Very boring teacher. He takes attendance, so make sure you show up to class. He wasn't that helpful with questions in class. His exams are difficult. Most of the class fail or did bad. One good thing is that he curves a lot during the end. If you're thinking you're getting a D or F, you might get a C instead. He doesn't grade + or -.
DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH. PLAYS FAVORITISM WITH ORIENTAL STUDENTS (GIRLS).
this professor can't teach, yes he knows accounting but can't deliver it the right way, not enough notes, not helpful, rude, he just sits and talk most of the time. very boring, stupid jokes. i passed but i will never take any of his classes.
I dont think Dr. Hirsch favors any student. He is a fair and polite teacher. He knows who the hard-working students are. He just gives more attention to them. What teacher doesnt give more attention to students who are trying harder in his class?
Not the best. He twists the accounting concepts so it would seem harder to solve a problem when there is an easier way to solve it. Three tests one writing assignment. Finally allowed a calculator (SP06).
His class is just a mind game. You have to pay attention, take good notes, talk to him, participate and laugh at his jokes. It helps to be a girl, but he is overall a decent teacher who gives C's to almost anyone.
Nice guy and easy to talk to. Very helpul professor. Exams are directly from lecture and attendance taken. Test are part multiple choice. Very fair grader! Take him for 301 A & B he is great! Don't missed class and hard-working, you will get A or B, not C.

I took him 2 years ago. He didn't allow calculators because he caught a couple students cheating. Acctg is not an easy subject, esp. Acctg 301A but he tries to make it understandable. Just do your homework & take advantage of his office hours. I think he's easier on grading once he gets to know you & sees that you're making an effort to do well.
Students who had accouting courses years back should try Dr. Hirsch. He spends first couple weeks reviewing introductory accounting materials. Test are difficult(except exam 2) because the sheer amount of materials, but his personal grading method offsets that difficulty. Unparallel dedication to help students during office hours.
stay away! he will confuse you more!
Take notes, master the examples he does in class and you will get an A.
None.
I'm no longer an accnting major. Skip this guy and Luzi (307). Between the two it was like tag team. They should both retire. They're not fit to teach. Terrible experience. Beware...
This class was extremely confusing. His examples are more confusing then the book and his wording on the test is crazy. Bottom line is I think he is extremely disorganized and it shows with his teachings. Take Grant...
I am taking him for the summer 301A session. He is running through the examples, which he already has in his notes. So all he is doing is copying from his notes to the board. The exam are not clear either and each question has too much weight. If you don't know one of the question on the test, you probably won't get 2 or three Qs right.
MC questions have 15 possible answers, plus a none of the above that requires you to write the correct answer on the back of the scantron. Attendance is taken every class session. He seems to have a personal vendetta against the FASB. I didn't feel he was inspiring us to be accountants, but instead inspiring us to get out of the major!
I gave up Accounting major because of this guy. He tried to say all the time that he's fair..but NO,NO,NO. No way to understand what he taught, not-organized. Too bad!! super favor teacher
Very nice and funny but does make you think twice about being an accounting major. I have to agree, he also made me change my mind about being accounting major.
Tough but fair and funny. He will trick you on the test if you dont READ the question slowly a couple times. Practice his examples and you will get an A. good Curving. Taking for 301B currently and dont know how I did yet, but back him either way. his 301B tests a lot harder than A, but the material is as well. dont be scared, just go to class!
He is nice.Knows many about accounting, but does not know how to teach. You should study by yourself, do all exercises. Grade fairly, finally I got an A
i took both Acct 301A and B with Hirsch. He is a really nice guy who at least tries to be funny. His class is somewhat boring but you must go because he takes attendance. His tests are mainly based off class lectures so take good notes. The book won't help much alone, go to class to understand his examples. Study class examples and youll be fine
If you are taking his class make sure to take good notes in class. Notes are the key to passing this class. Do all examples in class over and over until you understand how he explained in class. Assigns homework related to examples, hw a little helpful. Can be boring and confusing, but make sure to listen.. Easy because you don't have to read.
he's a nice professor, his tests are very challenging as they'r supposed to be. im glad i took his classes, seem like the hardest so far..goodluck
Overall a hard but fair professor. His tests are out of his notes, so take good notes. He can be kinda messy (like most professors)so try to meet some people and share notes. Since his tests are out of the notes, its a little boring, it kinda keeps you up.
Accounting is a hard subject but Hirsch didn't make it any easier. his lecture is very boring and confusing. He writes all over the board, you don't know where the problem starts and stops. If you want to do well, master yourself with the problem he does on the board which mostly very unorganize and confusing. he doesn't like people miss his class.
Go to class and take a good note is the most important in his class. 100% test questions are the material that cover in class. Master the note. Be careful his tests are trick!!!!!!!!
He's HORRIBLE! His tests are straight from lecture, but lecture is more about his shortcuts and lame jokes, than about accounting. Very disorganized and hard to follow his notes. Assigns homeowrk and then doesn't discuss it in class...how are we supposed to know if we're doing it right??? Makes a tough subject impossible. He needs to retire!!!!!!!!!
Alright CSUF students. Here's my opinion. From the view of an average student, not the nerd! Hirsh Acct301B requires some work and effort. He's really nice, and has office hours available. Go early, specially during exams; get his solutions manual, do some HW, review your exams, form a study group, ask questions in class; = guaranteed B
All the test material come from his lectures. He tends to make mistakes when putting material on the board, so be careful. It's important to redo all of the lecture notes. I studied extremely hard for his tests and still got a "B". Tough class
don't do the homework...just study everything he went over in the lecture!!
He likes to move table, chairs and lecture stand around. It's really annoying..since it makes loud noise.
He knows accouting well, but doesn't know how to teach. He says a lot of non-funny/stupid jokes and wastes a lot of time. At the end, he realizes that he doesn't have enough time to cover the material, so he cuts down your break time and push all the material at once to you to absorb. And guess what, those stupid joke still continues forever...
I took his class this past Spring and I liked him, but not the class. Here's what I think you need to know for this class: He plays favorites, take perfect notes, see him every chance you get during his office hours, make sure you memorize your notes, read the test carefully, discuss the class with other students and listen very carefully.
His lectures are not so great. He needs work on a power point presentation. He does have favorites. His exams are based on the notes that you take in class.
AVERAGE STUDENT: Avoid at all cost!! He knows what he's saying, but the students do not! he does not know how to teach. Student's life would be much easier if he knew how to use a computer (Post examples, notes, etc.) If you ever get stuck with him, study the notes carefully. He usually teaches in room SGMH 2201 or LH401. Avoid Staff in this room!
Before this class, I had a 3.9 GPA. Got my first C ever in this class. Creates his own problems and then transposes numbers or can't figure out how he got a number. His exams are based off the problems he creates so take good notes. Takes roll every class.
He's not bad at all. You have to discipline yourself to go over his examples repeatedly and study them! Go to his office hours when possible. when he sees you trying, he'll help you out more and it will help your grade! I did poorly on the first 2 exams and I'm sure I did average on the final and ended up with a B for the class!
Tough class but prof, Hirsch is a great teacher. Real nice guy and always willing to go over problems again if you ask. All the test problems are from class lectures so you have to show up!
Dr. Hirsch is a good teacher. If you take excellent notes you will be fine. Skimming through the text will help you with concept questions though limited to 3-4 in the exam. The key is to study his notes and also form study groups. I took him Fall08 and end up with a B after a dismall grade on the first exam. My advise, attend class and take notes.
Attend all classes & take good note. There were 3 exams. You will be fine if you master his notes. He didn't use the text book a lot. This is a relaxing class. Visit his office often & show him you care, then you will deserve a big curve. Very nice professor!
I always like him even though i didn't do well in both 301A & B. He knows A LOT in accounting field and knows how to teach. And today, I just found out that HE IS SUPER COOL because he is a professional in photography! He even developed his own films. He has a Rolleiflex medium format camera, so that tells everything how good and professional he is
Professor Hirsch was really helpful professor. I was failing his 301A class, but he encouraged me to stay and study his lecture note hard without giving up till final. I saw many students studied hard his final with hope. I am soo happy to pass this class.
Take good notes! His tests are exactly the same problems he does in class. Go to every class or else you will do poorly on the finals. Know key terms but don't study from the book. Re-write your notes a few days before the tests and really memorize them. Don't take his talking down to you personally, it's just how he is.
He is a grade killer. Tough Final Exam. Did not explain concepts clearly. Need re-organize/re-write class notes; otherwise, it's a mess. Have to memorize notes firmly and use book for supplement info. Also, read the Exam questions very carefully because the words are tricky. NOT RECOMMAND!!!
He is hard. I have taken many tough professors but this guy here is too hard for students.Does not use the book much and that's not a good thing because his lectures are based on his own notes, which are unorganized and confusing. he does not use powerpoint whatsoever. I have 4.00 GPA and I think I'll get a C for this class.
Prof. Hirsch is not bad teacher, but he lectures kinda hard for average students to understand. Most of student are failing in his class. One way to do well in his class is to take crystal clear good notes, memorize the note. To get A, you have to understand the notes and how to get his answers. Tests are hard. He curves the grade
This professor is THE worst I've ever had. His examples are all over the place. He tests based on his notes which are very unclear and he gets his numbers wrong. Little textbook usage. Reading it won't really help. Forms groups if u really must take him. I'd recommend you take someone else. Hirsch is THE worst!
Tough guy. His tests are hard. Lecture note is a mess. His explanation is terrible. Study off the note to pass this class. There was an idiot rated him cool because he s a photographer. He shouldn't be a teacher. Not reccommeded
Hirsch is good I guess since I get wat he is lecturing. Average student is horrible to get. By a way, I got a B in his class (F 1st exam, B 2nd, and final dont know). My advice: memorize his lecture notes, find out how to get answers on his problems, and study group is a plus, but i was studying alone. Exam are alike with his notes different number
Great professor!!! He knows extremely well in acct, knows how to teach. Friendly/ approachable. For those who wrote bad things about him need to re-think if you've studied??! Don't blame on him for the work that you didn't do.
Be fair, people. He is a GREAT prof. Exams are not easy, but please ask yourself if you really study or not! Acct is something that you have to understand the material throughly and know how the system works! I didn't do well in class, but I never complain. Cos I know I didn't study enough. I admired him being a photographer becos he never shows of
Excellent professor. For those complaining, how much did you study? did you go to office hours for help? This is an extremely difficult subject and Hirsch covers almost everything you need for the CPA exam. He is extremely helpful if you just make an effort!
Subject matters are hard but the instructor is very helpful if you show your effort of learning and ask questions in his office hours. Take good notes and clearly understand every number in your notes. Average grade is usualy lower than expected but he curves. Learn a lot from his classes 301 A&B
Hirsch is smart and knows his subject well. The difficulty was figuring out his notes at home. It was hard to see how he presented material in class as he bounces around a lot. Tests are a repeat of in class examples. Lastly his handwriting is horrible so sit in the front.
Projessor Hirsch is the best professor i ever had! I had him in both ACCT 301A and 301B! He's smart and he knows his materials well; plus he loves teaching and having students come in his office hr. He curves the grades very generously! If you have a D range score, BUT IF you SHOW your effort, then your likely to pass! Drop in his office hr often!
Lectures are disjointed and unorganized. His handwriting is terrible and he doesn't use powerpoint so it is near to impossible to learn in class. Also, he does not use the book. He thinks that his own case study is a better learning aid but it is actually more confusing. Good luck learning in this class. At least he curves quite a bit.
Dropped his class because his lecturers were confusing and it was hard to follow what he was doing. Would ramble about something the first half of class, then zip through a problem without explaining anything. Hirsh isn't good at teaching, but if he likes you, I guess he'll give you an A. If you want to learn I recommend you take another professor.
I dont know why he receives all this love on Rate My Professor, but he is pretty bad. Teaches from his own notes, and he always gets the figures wrong. Then when you ask him about it, he gets angry, like you disrespected him. But all you wanted was to understand. Doesnt use the book, so you cant go back and re-read to understand. I would avoid.
Go to his office hours, and you will do fine.
Doesn't teach clearly and gives his own examples that are hard to follow. Try for another professor if you want to understand the subject better. I don't know why he has a high rating on here.
Avoid at all costs. Uses his own examples and notes are messy and unorganized. Tests are very difficult. No powerpoints and very little visuals. Learned very little from this class.
Craziest class I've ever taken. He has absolutely no consistency with the topics he covers and jumps randomly from one to another. Always complains about the book and teaches how he would approach it. Furthermore the most difficult test among the accounting professor. If you really want to learn accounting, avoid him at all cost.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS! You will not understand anything; his notes are messy and he spends half of the class telling pointless stories. Here's a tip to survive for first 2 exams study notes, make sure your notes are word for word and just memorize them and then good luck on the final. You will probably get a C.
LOL!!! I can't believe the university pays this guy to sit on a stool for over an hour and babble about complete nonsense. Then he races through the lecture for 15 min and you would have an easier time trying to read ancient egyptian than his handwriting. Also gets really angry when you ask him to explain.
Professor Hirsch is one of the most understanding accounting professors I've had. He tries really hard to help students learn the material. He takes information from the book and makes it his own way so students will understand. I prefer it like that. Take really good notes or you won't know what's on the exams.
AVOID!Bad professor. If you must take him, start a study group early so you can go over the notes together. This will ensure you have everything. Be prepared to have an extra notebook where you rewrite the notes. His tests are all from his notes but not everything in the notes is on the test. Make him explain how he will word questions on the test.
Must a) have good listening in class b) do all the recommended problem he told you in lecture and from the syllabus. Exams are from the note but he wont teach everything, have to check the practice problem yourself. he is retired already, so he is not that helpful. his lecture are just copying note onto the board. An A is not entirely impossible.
Avoid this professor at all costs! One of the worst professors I have ever taken. He does not use power points or the textbook rather, he prefers to teach using his own 'style' which is basically just sitting on a stool for an hour talking about random pointless stories. I have never been so confused and stressed out about a class ever before.
Grades on 3 exams including the Final totaling 300 points. No homework. 1 handwritten assignment consist of 10-column, balance sheet, t-accounts, trail balance, etc. (no points if you turn it in, 10 pt deduction if you don't) Does not provide study guide for exams. No cheat sheet. No powerpoint. Does not answer questions clearly. Takes roll.
The best way to learn for his class is to meet with classmates and go over his notes. He will help you pass the class if you are committed enough.
HORRIBLE! he bs teaches and is lazy and if you ask he'll say bring it up later or something and forgets, not an ideal environment for learning, no one wants to participate in the lectures, school even knows, they sent a BS evaluator from the head of the accounting apartment, that was the best performance he gave, then next day he went back to crap
HOW CAN HE HAVE SUCH A HIGH GRADE ON THIS WEBSITE!! THAT IS A LIE!! STRAIGHT UP! if you dont believe me, just know that this semester he was bad, notes are bad, writes horribly, spaces out, talks alot bout useless stuff then runs through problems without explaining... not to be rude, but he should do the students a favor and retire, dude cant teach
The grading scale is wrong, no way he has 3.3, glenn hatton and hung lu have lower ratings than him and they were AWESOME professors, i dont know how he has such a high grading when 80% of comments are bad, doesnt make sense, unless this site taking bribes from the school to fill in those spots with this guy cause no one wants to take him
The school is screwing students over every semester by keeping this guy, i guarantee it, he teaches with no sense of direction, not a smooth flow, easily lost in lectures, cause his writing teaching ways are SUPER BAD, the ALPHA and OMEGA of BAD, i feel bad for students that have no choice but to pick a professor and have to end up with this guy..
This professor is old school. No PP, no homework. His lectures are worthless because he makes it very difficult to follow. Very unclear and highly unorganized. His tests are very close to the examples he gives but you REALLY need to study them. The book helps, A LOT. He curves. A LOT. I got a B, I don't know how, but I still don't recommend him!
Got a C- on the first test, but ended with an A for the course. To those who complain about the tests, I would say, go back and REWRITE (yes, rewrite, not review) your notes! If anyone can fully understand the notes, then an A is guaranteed! I have to admit that Dr. Lu is easier than Dr. Hirsch. However, Hirsch is way better than Foote!
Best professor I had.
