This is one of the best teachers Sierra College has. He teaches in a way that everyone can understand. Study guides, and practice tests are given before the actual test. If you dont understand, just ask, he takes all the time you need until you understand it. I am not a fan of Math, but Jay made this class fun. I actually learned in this class.
Jay is a great teacher. Patient, clear explanations and actually funny. He made math a whole lot better for me. First math class I've passed since high school...
Jay is a fantastic teacher. I was really worried about my ability to understand math but after his class I have overcome all of that anxiety. He is very relaxed, I never felt rushed on the material we covered. He answered all questions and did not mind stopping until everybody understood the subject at hand. Wonderful teacher, definitely take him!
Everyone should have a teacher this great! Jay is smart, enthusiastic, and so helpful. You will never feel stupid in his class. He respects his students and goes the distance to help. Take his class...you will be glad you did.
He doesn't teach very well Also he isn't good teacher
Jay Kesler teaches to the lowest level and ensures all students in the class understand every element within a problem, I recommend him for any math class
Let me say I hate math first of all, but with Kesler it's a really easy course. The homework is easy and his reviews are exactly whats on the test. I highly recommend him. The class does have a lab which is like a concentration camp, but you'll get used to it. Great teacher if you struggle in math.
This teacher is fantastic! I thought I was a lost cause until I took his class. His teaching style is so obvious that you say to yourself "Why didn't I do that way before?" I will definitely take other math classes from him in the future since I know he teaches Math A and Math D.
I had been dreading Statistics for YEARS. Thankfully I took it with Mr Kessler. He was so helpful and clear. Broke everything down step by step and never moved forward without everyone feeling comfortable with the concepts. It is clear that he loves his job and wants his students to succeed. Graded on a curve when necessary! TAKE STATS WITH HIM!
Kesler explains things really well and you feel like you understand everything but his tests are IMPOSSIBLE! The average grade on the first exam was an F and he doesn't curve. Save your gpa and take another instructor for calculus. On the plus side, he is really nice and helpful when you have questions.
His lectures come straight out of the book, usually even the same problems as examples. But his tests, NO. They relate to nothing. Not the homework or lectures. Average for first two tests was 60%. He often gets confused on his own problems in lecture and isn't organized. Save your grade and take calc with somebody more experienced and dedicated!
Honestly one of the most unorganized and unfair teachers I have ever taken in my academic career. He has sing handily killed my interest for math by making it as brutal and unclear as possible. His tests are completely theoretical and don't pertain to what you teach. He offers no study guides and doesn't respond to emails. No curves DONT recommend
He is a horrible professor! Took the first exam and got an F. I never have gotten an F on a math test! His tests are ridiculously hard and DONT PERTAIN TO ANYTHING taught in class. He goes way too much into details on tests. He doesn't explain concepts well at all! AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!!! HE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO TEACH CALCULUS.
stay away! if you take him your GPA will suffer. he doesnt teach and goes off during lectures only to tell us we're behind. instead of taking responsibility he rushed the chapter on which the average was an F. to make it worse he makes the tests so hard that the only reason I pass is b/c Ive taken calc before comes consistently late and never ready
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. The homework is very heavily loaded. The exam is taken in the math lab and it's worth 50 percents of your grades so it's north very worth it when you are not good with math. I would recommend someone else and not him.
Stats online is an OK option if you aren't interested in retaining the information. I was able to get by the 1st 13 weeks on my own, but the last 3 weeks were very challenging as the material was difficult to understand. Homework load is pretty intense (on mymathlab) and he has weekly discussion topics, chapter tests (5 total incl. a cumm. final).
I managed to get an A in this class because I completed all of the work, and J is very fair with his grading. If more than a few people experienced an issue, he gave us all full credit for those problems on the test, or extended the homework due dates. Only thing is if you message him on a Friday, don't expect a response until Tuesday.
HARD CLASS!Be prepared to spend hours and hours on homework!Assignments were often confusing and had many typos which could turn any given assignment into a lengthy ORDEAL-He grades fair overall but BEWARE of the comprehensive final at the end of the class, it can bring your grade down by 2 letters! Kesler seems cool but his stats class is brutal!
I thought Jay was great! I think if I had taken him on campus, I'd have no complaints. However, if you even remotely struggle with math, I highly recommend taking an on campus class.Although he uploads videos, you miss the connection that you get with an in class professor. You'll end up teaching yourself, not good if you struggle with math!
Kesler is truly a good guy. Lectures are long, but still to-the-point, as he squeezes multiple sections into a single lecture. Very knowledgable and willing to help everyone. The only downside is that the majority of your grade is the 3 main tests, as there is no homework (and minimal credit assigned to the section worksheets). Study, you're good.
Kesler is a VERY clear cut teacher. He does make some mistakes and he will admit his fault on that. The grade is literally 3 exams + final + 1 homework sheet a day (which is always on the lecture of that day). Extra credit is minimal (3 points an exam, all or nothing question). If you pay attention and ask question, you WILL pass. Would take again
His tests are nothing like his lectures, homework or practice exams. I would choose a different teacher!
Excellent professor! Very entertaining, and clear lectures. Tests are tough, but nothing out of this world. He is new, so he changes things around a little. After a few years though, he will be the go to professor.
Super easy. There is an online textbook but you don't need it. Just shoe up to class , pay attention, take good notes, and do those worksheets in class. Also do the homework. He gives tons of extra credit. His tests are kind of short and he gives study guides that look just like the test.
Really helpful lecture videos (online class) I missed a due date for an EXAM and emailed him about it and he allowed me to take the test anyway and graded it normally without even deducting points (though probably wouldn't allow it again if I kept screwing up) Has 5 late passes you can redeem for assignments. Easy deadlinesdue dates HELPFUL!
I am taking his statistics class online. He posts video lessons and is very clear and specific. The homework questions are straight from his lectures, which makes them fairly simple if you listened. I enjoy his class. He cares about his students and is always willing to help. I wish all math teachers were more like him.
Jay is great teacher. I love math and am taking it more for review after being out of school for so long. But he is great at making sure things are clear. He also likes to try and trick you so you need to catch him on errors. He is very easy going. In-class work is everyday ad graded, although its much harder than what appears on the test.
Jay is an awesome math teacher, he is very patient and easy going which is helpful for those struggling to grasp the concepts. Lectures are sometimes long, but nothing unbearable. He makes the class interesting, and you can tell he really enjoys math and enjoys teaching it. His tests were a bit hard, but definitely a great teacher for Math D.
Homework was due on Tuesday nights, loved that. I am not great at math at all and have taken this corse with other professors and never passed. Show up EVERY TIME, do homework, ask questions, study for tests, do the review and you will pass, I passed and it was a miracle. He is a great teacher.
I loved Jay, hes the man. As long as you ask the man questions you'll get your answers. He cares about the students. Homework is due every Tuesday and is absolutely easy enough to keep pace. My only thing about him is you cant use a calculator in his MATHD class, he also doesn't use mymathlab. His own version of it kinda sucks.
Great teacher! Explains things very clearly and is always will to help you figure out anything you don't understand
Excellent professor! First time taking calculus and he made the experience very enjoyable. He truly cares about his students and is very knowledgeable in the subject. Would recommend to all!
HORRIBLE lectures-but good 1 on 1. In lecture he always gets confused and has the wrong information, and gets halfway through a problem to realize he did it wrong - same thing on homework every week there is issues when he puts wrong answers and wrong problems----way too disorganized to learn from but great tutor for 1 on 1 help
Jay is amazing but if you struggle at all with math then don't take stats online. I learned that the hard way. Every week there is a discussion and an excel project (easy 10/10 if you do it) lecture videos, and online homework. YOU HAVE TO PUT EFFORT IN. Luckily, he gives late passes if you are late on an assignment.
Kesler is pretty cool. his lectures are easy to follow an is always helpful with homework. Gives average of 20 questions for the whole week and has office hours in math lab for additional help. STUDY FOR THE EXAMS or else you wont pass. got bout 68 on 1st two exams. Studied for the the 3rd and got 100%. Listen to the lectures, its hard to catch up
Kesler is a really nice guy and will do whatever to help you understand the topic, he is a very chill guy and doesn't have crazy expectations. His exams are more than fair as they pertain to the textbook and he gives study guides. He is also great 1 on 1 as he may make some mistakes in class, he really does know and understand mathematics.
Kesler is a great professor who is very helpful and easygoing! What I've found very helpful was the study guides and video tutorials he generously posts up. They're very clear and straight foward. Just make sure you attend to the lectures and do your homework then you'll be fine
Hes a nice guy, easy going, and an easy grader, but there is no clarity!! If you want to look at the lectures, they're just blank powerpoints with a question, and zero walk thru. I wish he would provide more walk through examples of questions that are from the home work.
I had his class for math D. Great instructor. Really easy to follow and learn from. Lectures are clear.
Class was very difficult online as he uses different terminology than the text. Homework had very little to do with the tests. His final is 50% of your grade! Slow to respond to help requests. Gives 5 late passes for homework to extend 48 hours. The homework program he uses does not explain problems after submission to teach you if you get wrong.
taken him for just about all my required math besides stats. Really helpful and available to students. I suck at math and got A's in all his classes. Try to take all math with one professor if possible. Also offered extra credit
Kesler is a real homie. He is hilarious and engages the class well. The good thing is he lectures at a good pace and makes sure that no one falls behind. The bad is that the lectures can be extremely boring, especially Calculus. HW is not mandatory, quizzes are based off HW and exams are very doable, which is nice. Overall, great guy!!
Jay was not the best but he did go the extra mile for us whenever we had questions or needed to stay after class. I ended the class with an A because of his willingness to help me understand the concepts whenever there was confusion.
Mr. Jay is the chillest math professor at Sierra. He is a caring and nice person, even nicer than professor Balaguy. He will help you outside of classes as long as you ask him, regardless if you are not his students. He genuinely cares about students. I wish I could have him for DE, but he is not teaching it. So sad, MJ.
You have to be able to teach yourself math concepts to pass the on-line class. If you can't, stay away. Midterm and Final are taken on campus and worth a combined 50% of your grade. Homework every week. Didn't buy the book ($170.00) and still passed. (barely)
Basically a teach yourself type of class. Midterm and final are on campus. Kesler marks the whole question wrong rather than parts, making taking it extremely difficult. Not only that but the final is cumulative of the whole semester. So, homework and the two online tests are a breeze but the on campus tests are a nightmare.
This was a pretty standard class. Keep up with the work. Information builds upon information in this class so my biggest advice is to be consistent. He is really good with answering questions on assignments or study guides before they are due. With emailing, I've gotten fairly quick responses as well!
I took Kesler for Stats and overall, I was not disappointed! He's definitely one of the nicest and most humble teachers I've had so far and if you struggle (which I did) he is more than willing to go the extra mile and help his students. Make sure you ask questions though because he can tend to rush through some concepts! Other than that, amazing
Kesler is a great professor. Super understanding if you need a few extra credit points. He is always in the math center doing study groups and helping students. The tests are worth a lot of points but he gives study guides so if you know those then you should be fine. Its a lot of work but if he sees you trying he is willing to help.
Most of the grade is reliant on tests, but he definitely does his best to help everyone that needs it. He gives all the help needed to get everyone to pass, the only people that won't are those who aren't trying.
Jay is my favorite math professor I've ever had. Although this class was not easy by any means, he is more than willing to help you out if you need it. He is extremely understanding and compassionate, you can tell he really cares about his students. I would take a class with him again just because of the type of person he is.
If you go to class everyday and ask questions, you should be fine with keeping up with the material. He gives you a manageable amount of homework, so you won't be up all night doing it unless you either wait till the last second to do it, or if you don't have notes or the textbook to refer to in order to get it done.
Super Awesome teacher. Midterm can be taken online or on campus and Final MUST be taken on campus. SO nice and understanding! He would go the extra mile for his students! All lessons are online videos and each week there is the same pretty easy to understand homework!
Kesler is not a good Calculus teacher, period. He teaches stats, so he is very rusty at Calculus and it shows in his test results. 3 people out of almost 40 passed our first test. The average grade in his class is a fail. Does not even entertain the thought of a curve, which is ludicrous given how bad his students do. Trust me, do NOT take him.
Pros: Free online textbook and 5 late passes on HW. Thats about it. Cons: Final is worth 35% of your grade. So even if you did good on everything and get a 68% on online exams overall... youre not gonna pass unless you get a B+ on the final exam. Talk about nerve racking! As a nervous test taker... I recommend not going with this professor. :(
I personally do no like his teaching style. he teaches all class off of his slides. he doesn't give wksts if he does its like once a month, taking notes all class is boring.
People have mistaken Prof. Kessler's teaching style to be the issue w/ their statistics grade; however this class is not a typical math class and is never taught as such, and is a completely different style. Jay Kessler is incredibly caring, very available outside of class, and will take the one on one time to help you understand where you're lost.
Professor Kesler was co-teaching my MATH10 class with Ken Johnson and he was amazing! He was so helpful and wanted each student to do great on everything so he reached out multiple times. This class is definitely a heavy homework load and I would suggest not taking a science class with this or too many classes with heavy homework loads together.
I really like Mr. Kesler, even though I took his stats class online. He was so responsive when I sent him any kind of email, or question on our discussion board. He even lets online students attend his in-person classes if they are struggling! Stats is hard, its important to have a teacher that cares, and he is definitely one of them!
I took this class online and he teaches us everything on spreadsheets but expects us to know how to do everything on calculator or by hand. I also just took the final and maybe only 2 of the questions on the final were actually a part of our homework and study guide that he provided. He also doesnt allow any Notes on midterm or final.
Had him and another professor for Math10, definitely made the class a lot easier and more enjoyable. Attendance isn't mandatory but it does make the class a lot easier. As long as you try to do your work, it helps
Kesler is an amazing guy, so kind and very funny too (for a professor :)). Stats was difficult for me and I just barely passed, but had I had any other prof I likely would have to retake. He really cares about you and how you do in his class. Grades exams very leniently and is always available outside of class. Lectures can be very boring.
Like an idiot, I took this class during summer, online. I'm awful at Math so it was a real struggle for me. That said, Jay was incredibly patient with me and gave me a lot of extra time and late passes for assignments. He wanted me to pass as much as I wanted to pass. If you need more time for assignments, just ask him. He's totally cool about it.
I took Prof. Kesler for Statistics over the summer. It was a pretty good experience. Nothing bad. I thought he was pretty good.
Jay's stats class was very accessible, with the material being presented in multiple ways. He had videos going through the steps of different type of problems, which was very helpful when stuck on homework. We got a finite number of late passes for the semester to turn in an assignment after its due date, including tests or quizzes.
Stats is a hard class but this professor made it so that students can actually pass with an A or B, which is great! If you're taking online stats math13, I would recommend Jay! 10/10 also very understanding
Kesler is a great professor. Very laid back and open to answering any questions. He also gives out candy if you ask so that is a plus. Overall super chill teacher and makes the class really enjoyable.
Jay was an amazing professor. Math 10 is a problem solving class. Every week you learn a strategy and then around 1 or 2 weeks later you have a quiz (2 questions) where you show use of the strategy. Definitely recommend Jay, he's willing to meet on a day off just to help you understand assignments. He also gives time in class to work on weekly HW.
Overall great professor. You MUST use the lecture slides or else none of the material will make sense. He is an amazing and funny professor. Take advantage of everything he offers because they're needed to pass the class.
Professor Jay was easily one of the best teachers. His class did have a lot of HW and not the easiest tests but he was great at explaining and super understanding. Another thing is, you knew exactly what was going on each week- super organized modules. Would take him again!!
Kesler was funny, participative, understanding, and took his time ensuring each student understood the subject. Math is a difficult subject for me, but as long as you take notes, participate in examples, ask for help, and DO THE HOMEWORK, you will do well in the class. Homework was a large part of this class in your grade and understanding.
I really recommend this professor if you want to go in person. He's understanding and a great teacher. He makes class fun and as someone who hates math, I didn't hate going to this class.
This class is classified as 'Philosophy Math'. Being in a group was essential to his class, even if you preferred otherwise. You show work on the board, but would never be told if you were right/wrong, just graded on presenting. Being right/wrong mattered on tests, which was difficult to study for without knowing if your homework was right/wrong.
Professor Kesler's class was good. I am absolutely terrible at math and was super nervous, but I got a B. I did work really hard and took a ton of notes. Pay close attention to the reading and videos and take your time. I wouldn't take this class with another subject I struggle with. If I passed you can.
Hey, I'm currently taking Jay's intro to elementary statistics class. So for it's pretty straight forward very very organized lectures and slides. He has many tutoring/opportunities to help those who struggle with math succeed. He's very caring of your needs, very forgiving with homework passes, formula sheets on tests and 1 on 1 time.
HE IS THE BEST MATH PROFESSOR EVER!!!!!!!!!
Jay has a very clear and straightforward teaching style. His lectures are very current to the work you'll be faced with on HW and he's super organized. I've thoroughly enjoyed his course. Stats is by no means for everyone or an easy topic but I think for what Jay is given, he does a super successful job at making it digestible for students.
Kesler was a great professor who you could tell truly cares about his students. He learned everyone's name in the first couple weeks and was always easy to contact. Exams are a large part of your grade. My only issue was that often times the problems he lectured on were much easier than the HW and exam problems.
Overall great class, Professor Kesler truly cares about his student's success. Lectures can be a bit boring (as is expected for stats), but he gives a generous break halfway through which truly helped my focus. Grades are primarily exam based; the exams were not too difficult (thanks to review sessions and the provided equation sheets).
Kesler is a great professor. He explains the content perfectly and doesn't hesitate to answer any questions. The lectures are long but the material is covered well and easy to digest. There wasn't ever a point in class that was confusing, and the tests were about 15 questions and about middle of the road for difficultly.
Unprofessional and asks for irrelevant personal information. Lectures are long and not helpful because he spends the entire time going on useless tangents. Would not take again, should have taken a different class.
Jay is a great guy. He can be a bit disorganized but his tests are very straightforward--if you did the homework and a few more practice problems you'll be solid! He provides extra credit on his tests and he's very approachable and will help you with whatever you need. He made Calc 2 a breeze for me, 10000% recommend him for an easy time!
Starts off easy and then gets more difficult. I reccomend always going to class because most are lectures and its hard to catch up just the slideshow. But his lessons are easy to understand and helpful, there are lots of example problems he goes through. As a class you go over questions on the hw the day its due and tests are 65% of your grade.
Genuinely my favorite professor I've ever had. All of his exams and homework problems come from his lecture slides that he gives out. Exams 2,3 and final are multiple choice. Kesler is incredibly caring and is always willing to help if you are stuck. The best thing that helped me was doing example questions using his methods and you will do great.
I'm AWFUL at math but I enjoyed how his class was ran! Very efficient and accessible whenever you need help. Has a couple of late passes for homework if you need to use them & when there was a large power outage he gave us extra time!
