I don't like him too much because he failed me
A very hard course, but he explains it in ways that you can understand. But the homework was very hard.
Very Difficuly Professor... Shows a love for math (bad) and assumes you have that same passion. Unreasonably long tests, Unreasonably long homework. Although he does get lienient once there are about 5 people left in the class.
HE was the worst teacher i ever had. He loves math and think everyone does too. I barely passed his class and thats with a tutor once a week. Try to stay away from this guy
worst teacher ever. Multiple choice tests and no partial credit. Ohh and can't forgot to mention, no TI-89 and sometimes no calculator at all.(IN CALC!!!) THEREFORE I'M SAYING DONT WASTE YOUR TIME!!!
I dont know what u guys are smoking.. he helped me out alot.. got an A and I suck at math.
my math testbook was horrible, and i always wondered how professors can make such a bad book, then i met J Martin and i understood y. he is awful he appears good at first but when you ask more then 1 question he starts getting mad and doesnt answer them
very unclear, would schedule a test and then not show up to review the test, did not explain the work clearly, everyone was withdrawing from the class, very hard and long tests
worst math teacher, purposely gives the hardest possible questions on tests, took longer to do his tests than to do high school regents, 10 kids were left in his class
EXCELLENT TEACHER! I hate math but I got a B+ in this class. He tries hard to make sure everyone understands everything and is very nice. He is also funny and loves Doritos.
very nice.. i took him a while back to i don't remember much.. but his test were hard..
His a nice guy! still say hi to him, but his test r hard n long. his teachings not the best. i think he's willing to help, but he told me he saw exactly where i went wrong in the class but didn't tell me that until the course was over and it was too late.
He's a very good teacher. I cant say for other people but i had a very good experience with him. If you are good in math then you will understand him perfectly clear. If your not good in math, then you going to have a hard time following along in his class. He's the best math teacher i ever had.
horrible teacher... hard tests... not fair... doesnt answer questions he sayd look them up... dont take this class only if u want a D
Very clear and exhaustive in his explanation. Tests are hard only because people don't review the homework he gives. If they did even 1/2 the homework, they would get easy A's
He's the best math teacher i've ever had. You have to be very specific with him if you don't understand something and it's easy to lose him. But he's got a great personality and hope to have him in the future.

His test are very hard. He says doing the home-work is like reviewing for the exam. But the kind of problems on the exam are more advanced then the ones he give for home-work. He's teaches very fast, and doesnt give people enough time to understand the work. He still a nice guy though :/
i had him for logic. he's a very good professor + makes things clear. tests are easy if you pay attention and do the homework. he's so nice, he will help you if you need anything.
very nice guy. but the way he teaches the material just makes it more confusing. i never understood any of it until the night before the test id read the book. and he gives quizes like ever week which just suck b/c everyone in the class does bad on them.
He makes things unclear and teaches topics very quickly. Doesn't spend enough time on subjects and moves on.
AVOID THIS TEACHER.EVERYONE DROPPED OUT AFTER THE SECOND TEST.THE TEST QUESTIONS ARE MUCH HARDER THAN THE HWK.YOU THINK YOU UNDERSTAND THE CLASS AND THEN YOU BOMB ON THE TEST BECAUSE HE MAKES THE QUESTIONS IMPOSSIBLE.
Nice guy, but tests are rediculously, unnecessarily difficult. Can't even finish them in the time allotted.
He is a very nice guy. The last time I took math was 8 years ago, but with his help I managed to understand everything. He gives several quizzes ( easy) and 4 tests, which are pretty decent. Take Mat 101.
He came late to class, did not explain any of the material completely and was unavailable for questions. The assignments were less difficult than the questions on the exams. He doesn't teach the material and never takes time to answer homework questions. AVOID HIM IF YOU MUST TAKE MAT 295.

I'm in the easiest math class ever (thanks to the placement test) .. but he makes it really easy to understand and is very helpful. Test are long, but really easy. He's a great teacher!
he is the best
If you want to take Calculus, make sure you do not get this guy.
He tends to be very unclear, and gets caught up in trying to figure out one aspect of what he is trying to teach. He is very picky about how things are written, and is a harsh grader. He derives EVERYTHING and it confuses people. By the time you figure out what he's done, he's already a topic ahead. His tests are the hardest possible questions.
He makes the questions much harder than they have to be. The homework and classwork is a lot easier than the test questions. He moves very fast and nit picks. Avoid him if you can
i would say crazy pro maybe he is funny maybe he is cool but when it comez 2 math and calc he is THE SUCK hard tests, unfair grader AND u might understatnd wht in the class and do the homework very good but the test is much harder than the home work dont take him unless u wane hate math 4 ever
I'm a Math and Science major, and to be honest, I've always acceled in math and goten A's before encountering this professor. He is very confusing and unclear. He is a nice and cool guy, but as a professor, I'm afraid he lacks in certain areas. As some people below me have stated, his tests are unnecessarily hard.
I had taken PreCalc in high school so I understood what was on the tests. But there was no help from him. He doesn't know how to teach. Someone would ask a question and he would say everything and anything and spend forever trying to explain but wouldn't answer the question.
AWFUL! Drop or dont take him ASAP! Yeah hes nice, funny and seems cool being trapped in 1975 asking if I'm digging the lesson and using the Grateful Dead as examples, but he CANT TEACH! His tests are *SO* hard and for no reason - I was supposted to fail though and he gave me a D instead, so he has 2 points from me for that, but STAY FAR AWAY!!!
he's a really nice professor, but he def. does not know how to teach. like everyone else mentioned, his tests are hard for no reason. the material is fairly easy but he words his tests tricky and it's too confusing. i had to drop his class and i suggest you do too unless you're a math wiz or something.
Very hard professor, he would teach the math, but when he gave examples he would solve them as if he were talking to another math professor, using shortcuts everywhere so that all of us were confused. There was a gigantic gap between calc and precalc. He didn't give partial credit on quizzes and his tests were hard. All extra time was derivations.
UUUSSSEELLLESSSS!!!! hez horrible...worse than burdge, another horrible professor who cant teach
I you do your work, you'll pass his class. He is EXTREMELY detailed when it comes to explaining exercises, problems, and theorems --sometimes excessive. He will keep you engaged in the class by asking you whether you understand what he is teaching, and by saying funny things. The class' drawback is that his tests are very lengthy.
I had this prof. for logic and set theory and i'm goin against everyone when i say this but i loved him. I'm not even that good in math but just pay attention and stay awake in class bc he does go a little fast and you'll do fine. If you dont get something ask him after class is done and thats the best way to get him to xplain it better. I got an A
Great Caring Teacher. He runs on feedback, so be prepared to speak in class. Coming in from city college, where Satan was chair of the math dept, i feared diff eq. Jay Martin presented it in a not-so-scary and well laid out and clear manner. I recommend him for at least the higher level math that nassau offers.
He is a nice professor. tests are easy and you get a good gread if you work hard.
does not give partial credit, everyone should know that, if you are a good math student you're fine, if not you're screwed
I had Jay Martin for Logic and Set Theory and if you read the book like n o one does ( which is why he has bad ratings) you'll get an A like I did. I had no prior interest or skill in logic and he might have been the best professor i've had so far PS if you think he sucks... you're a moron and you want life handed to you.
Barely passed his class, but would take it again. He's a nice teacher and cares about his students.
This is the worse math professor I have ever come across in all my life,If you want a lesson in bad jokes and failing grades take him,but if you actually want to pass pre calculus at college level stay as far away from his class as possible. If you see him in the halls run for your life .Be afraid be very afraid..very nice guy but sucks at teaching.
WORSE TEACHER EVEEEERRRRR.......... DOESNT GIVE PARTIAL CREDIT ....DOSENT GO OVER HOMEWORK.....GIVE CORNY JOKES FOR HALF THE CLASS THEN EXPECT YOU TO KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT...DO NOT , I REPEAT , DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS..
VERY NICE TEACHER, friendly, and tries to bond with the students. you have to read the text book and study. do your homework. then you'll do well in his class. most of these ratings are from nassau students who aren't trying. as a teacher, he's alright.
Nice professor. Tests moderately difficult, but if you do the worksheets/problems from class over, easy to get a good grade in the class. Attendance is really important.
I would not choose this professor if I were you.
Very Nice guy, but as a teacher he sucks. He is not clear of what he is doing, he doesnt give patial credit and he says the word canary toooooo much.I got an A+ in precalc Math BII and Stats in high school and i'm getting a C+ in his class.DONT TAKE HIM
the sole reason why i passed that class was for perfect attendance and I did all the work. I bombed every test and pop quiz. very nice person. he's a guy i'd get along with perfectly OUTSIDE the classroom...but when it comes to teaching...not so good. =/ get rid of the pop quizzes...please.
I do not think I have had a teacher that was this REDICUOLUS in years. He gives answer sheets on calculus tests, will not give partial credit which screws you up on 10 point questions. If you ask question he just makes it more confusing and starts doing something irrelevant to the question asked.
this professor does not care for u to pass his class, he attends class late teaches new subjects with a single problem and expects u to go to the math center bc he will b of no use to u. DO NOT TAKE THIS GUY UNLESS U WANT TO FAIL.
Horrible professor. He is the worst grader. You get NO partial credit at all. You have to write crystal clear or else he will marke the entire problem wrong even if he knew what u wrote. Plays favorites and he refuses to read the answers to all the quiz or test questions to double check that he didn't mark it incorrect. Don't take his classes ever!
I don't recommend this professor. He's not willing to answer your questions and he always gives surprise quizzes at the end of the class. He really knows how to draw attention but he doesnt give examples when he teaches so you have no clue when you try to do the HW.
Honestly, he's a nice guy, but he wasn't very good at teaching. It almost seems like he knows he's bad cause he keeps pretty much enthusing the class to drop his class. The way he teaches is a little difficult to understand.
He's a good teachers, his explanations can get a little confusing at points but overall he portrays a good overall idea.
I had previously taken Calc in high school so this class wasn't that bad. He tries to show you how you get the formulas and everything with proofs and stuff which is kind of annoying but just stick with it. The class started with 30 people and 9 of us ended up taking the final. If you pay attention and use the math center it shouldn't be too bad
Honestly the guy is awesome. He was super cool, always understanding and very helpful. Very direct and jumped to help if stuck on something. Pay attention to his lessons and your great. He is a fair grader, let's some quizzes and tests get dropped so you don't end up failing him. I did bad, but coulda done better. He did everything he could to help
This teacher does not care about his students. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! he is a bad overall teacher not understanding!! WARNING!! AVOID
Extremely difficult class to pass. Doesn't give enough time on quizzes or tests, and insists on giving the hardest versions of every question possible until after the first major test, at which point you are most likely already failing with no hope of redemption. Avoid this professor if at all possible for Calculus 2.
To put it simple, this is and probably will be the only class I ever dropped. You need a very strong background of calc or pre calc if you're taking his Calculus 1 class.
He doesn't care if you pass, he'll just gladly tell you to drop the class. He grades on pop quizzes and exams that he doesn't give enough time to finish. He knows his math but he's terrible at teaching it. Take this class with another professor.
WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER TAKEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. HE DOES NOT EXPLAIN ANYTHING, ALWAYS INSISTS ON TAKING THE HARDEST SOLUTION TO THINGS. IF YOU DONT DO THE QUESTION HIS WAY, HE WILL MARK IT WRONG. HORRIBLE GRADER AND DOES NOT CARE IF YOU PASS OR FAIL. TEACHES NEW THINGS THAT ARENT EVEN ON THE UPCOMING TEST INSTEAD OF REVIEWING. AOVID OR FAIL!!!
Nice guy but a terrible professor. Wastes an entire class to teach one problem. Gives out pop quizes after learning the material. I'd advise not to take him.
LOVE THIS GUY!!! Best class I've taken. Yes, there are quite a few pop quizzes but they're easy. Tests have at most 25 q's and are designed to help, not hurt. Provides ample time in the beginning of class to answer any questions. Respectful and caring. As long as you pay attention and do the homework (which he doesn't collectgrade), you will pass!
A nice professor. Not a easy class, but learnt a lot instead of an A. This is how a teacher should be.
Bad teacher! His test are hard but his grading is even harder. Explain proofs rather than going over problems which are hard to begin with.
Nice guy, but terrible teacher. Would rather speak the whole time then answer questions. Test are tough and answers MUST be to his liking or NO CREDIT !
GREAT GUY. All you really need to do is study and do his homework (He doesn't collect them). If you are not satisfy you can always go to the math center or his office hours and ask again. His class isn't easy but if your are looking to learn he will teach you. Just put effort. IF YOU HAVE 2 JOBS AND NEED AN EASY "A", don't even bother trying.
This guy will give you a quiz every single day to "help" with your grades. If it took you five 2-3 minutes to solve a problem and missed a number? You Simply get zero. 65% of the class dropped before second exam.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Prof. Martin does not know how to teach, he just makes people do work. Find a better professor.
If you study no reason not to pass this class. He is a nice guy and knows his stuff. Go into class with a small understanding of the topic (which you know is coming up) and he will get you the rest of the way. He will go over things again and again but only if he sees no one is picking up on it. Very approachable professor.
Has known the information he lectures on for decades and has a difficult time teaching that information to someone who is learning it for the first time. Difficult grading, no curves, moves incredibly quickly through material. Must dedicate an insane amount of time and effort to passing for anyone not beyond gifted in calculus.
Hes a awful professor .he doesnt help you at all if you ask him a question hell bug out and say your not studying or go to the lab he doesnt want to teach he wants you to know the stuff on your own . There is no other grades except for your test and quizzes so if you fail 2 test you automatically fail .STAY AWAY FROM JAY MARTIN !!!!!!!!
Great Teacher if you are willing to put in the work. You cannot just slip by. Pop quizzes are designed to help not hurt you. If anything, gives you more problems to work with. Calculus classes cram a lot of material.. so yea he'll go fast. Utilize the math center and you'll be fine.
I had to withdraw, he takes the longest possible route in explaining a simple question, He dances around the information needed to know, A dismal experience through and through,
Often times hell teach a topic and then give you a quiz immediately after so if you dont understand what is being taught you wont do so well.
Do Not take him. Beware!!!! You were warned. Just do not take him. There is Reason his classes always have lots of empty seat. Just dont take him.
REAL TOUGH grader but Martin is one of the best Calc professors at Nassau. He sometimes did take a while explaining things, but its because he cares. I now have a bullet proof foundation of Calc2 because of him. If your in engineering or another high level program, take his class; you'll understand what and why you're doing it
this man is the worst teacher I've ever head. went into every homework seeing problems I've never seen before. do yourself a favor and do not take this guy this has been the most difficult math class I've taken and its pre-calc. Math has also always been my strong suit.
Pretty sure he got high the first couple of classes. Takes the longest time to explain things, gets frustrated when students dont understand. He teaches lessons that wont be on tests and just is not clear when he teaches. Gives you quizzes that help but doesnt help your grade because you wont pass them because he cant teach.
No doubt professor martin knows his stuff, his teaching style needs some brushing up. He means well but stymies participation by following up with "Easy right?, We get this right?" If you do not have the fundamentals down you will struggle. No Grading Curve, Uses the same material over and over so you can't re-examine any exam or test given.
To be honest, he seems like a great guy outside of school, but a terrible teacher. He shows enthusiasm for the class, but to the point to where the class gets confusing. No sense of pacing either. Be prepared to teach yourself if you take this class.
HIDE YOUR DOGS! if your dog barks during his lecture, he gets distracted and goes all out to meet your dog. He is willing to go over things you don't understand but, he gets impatient when students ask him questions repeatedly. He give pop quizzes. Make sure when you hand in your quiz and test online that you follow his insctrutions or you fail.
He gives a lot of homework but it's not mandatory. The tests are fair and pretty similar to the pop quiz and hw. You can decide whether the pop quiz counts for your grades or not. If you try hard, def an EZ A
Exams extremely impossible because they are long and there's no partial credit because he doesn't care for shown work. He gives pop quizzes often as well. He's bad at breaking down and explaining problems so we end up going over about two example problems in class.
Prof Martin may be an OK professor for Calculus 2 during the fall, but he made the summer course impossible. Engineering majors, good luck. He gave pop quizzes, but optional ones. He only gave three exams, including the final. He goes through lectures fast and gets frustrated sometimes if youre confused.
Professor Martins class can be difficult for a lot of students. He only gives 4 tests and you have to do well on at least 3, to make it through. He gives the class unannounced quiz's so be ready. He also gets upset when you are confused and expects you to know a lot during the class lectures.
Martin was excellent. Thorough with course sections and he even adjusted our course curriculum because alot of students were falling behind [even tho the content was basic logic, you just needed to do the (home)work]. Friendly dude too, he was super open to any questions and even held class time for it.
Nice personality and attitude but always over complicates the lessons. I had to self study and work on homework for 2-3 hours after every class to do well on the quizzes he gives out almost everyday. Grades extremely harshly as well and never curves. Difficult to reach outside of class and also no makeups.
He is nice and personable but doesn't know how to teach whatsoever. All of the study material is in the $200 textbook that is sold out everywhere. He expects that you know everything and rushes material. Doesn't post anything online. He writes like a doctor and can barely hear him. Be prepared to be absolutely lost taking this course.
You can find the textbook for free online. Really, you don't even need to do the HW, he doesn't check, just make sure you're following along during lectures so you understand the material. He is a super fair grader and gives review sheets for each test (there's only 4). He doesn't have insane expectations and is a very fair and reasonable professor
So disrespectful to my classmate who has been trying really hard to under the lesson. Can be very nice but I don't think he really cares. NO Brighspace being used. No extra help given. Only 1 exam so far, in jeapordy of failing. Do not take a class with him
He is very sweet and funny. HW is not mandatory but is crucial for understanding the lectures. Graded on tests. Quizzes are optional and are only used to help your grade. He is a decent lecturer and a good person.
he's genuinely an awesome teacher, the only reason i wouldn't take him again is because i have a hard time understanding logic (which is what were doing for the course rn) little tip, you can grab logic & set theory to borrow on Internet archive. It'll help alot
Professor Martin is a caring professor who took the time to help me and my friend when we were struggling with the course. He went at our pace and made sure that we understood the material before moving on. He's compassionate and cares about the success of his students. He doesn't grade hw and gives pop quizzes that only count as extra credit.
Has been gracious with the previous exams, allows retakes sometimes, final grades drop the lowest grade. Extremely test dependent, you'll have a lot of work to do, but if you put in the effort you'll see good returns. His review sheets are on point, they cover all the topics/questions on the exam, except for his final, for that be prepared
