He really makes biology fun to learn!!
VERY INTERESTING CLASS. He lectures really well and doesn't make the class boring. He knows all the material very well but his tests are really hard. He's a GREAT lecturer though.
He goes through material very fast and writes random material on the board. Bring a tape recorder!
Rosenheim is really interesting, engaging, and has a great way of explaining things so they are understandable. The tests are a challenge, but not too hard if you study and pay attention. He is very approachable as well.
concise, charasmatic lecturer, loves what he does. very approachable and nice.
interesting lectures. He is a good professor. Tests are kind of hard though. Just study.
He tests students on things he only talk about in passing which I think is not fair. He goes way too fast. Overall he knows his stuff but should explain things better than he does.
I think he's awesome. I really enjoy how he engages the class and he is wonderful to talk to in office hours. Jay is one of my favorite teachers definitely.
incredible bio teacher, engaging to class, and is very clear. tests are a bit hard until you get the hang of them, remember to do study questions
he goes too fast and his tests are too hard. does not expand on material much but still expects you to konw the full details about everything on tests.
I liked this guy. The test were definately hard and there was alot of material, but he is clear in his presentation and invites questions during lecture.
He is very energetic about teaching. Great lecturer, he takes time to explain concepts that people have difficulty with and is extremely patient.
Awesome professor! He doesn't use powerpoint, so come to lecture! Write fast since he tends to go at a steady pace. He is very helpful and very energetic...He'll dance for you at the end of the quarter!!!
Very animated during lectures, makes it a lot easier to learn. Answers any questions you ask during lecture and is patient with the students. Definitely recommend him.
I really enjoyed Rosenheim's class. I've never seen anyone so enthusiastic about worms! He actually makes them interesting! I'd really recomend his class!
Great lecturer, tough tests. Tested on stuff that was never presented in either lecture or book. Test material in general wasn't that bad, but those few questions on stuff that was never covered does hurt. Be prepared to study a lot
very approachable guy. tests are quite tough
he was a good teacher and the info he presents is easy to follow. i think his test are reflective of the lectures. he is always was upbeat and happy
If he mentions something in passing, it might be a multiple choice. If he spends a whole lecture on it, it might be worth 1/4 of the test ;) But explains things very well, at least for a student with heavy Bio background.
Good teacher, very good at explaining all of the genetics ideas that were involved in the class. the multiple choice questions on his tests are rough but overall he wasnt too hard.
great orator. AWESOME explainations. go to lecture! smart, interesting, clear. but warning: TESTS ARE DETAILED and extremely difficult!! I'd like to have him as a professor again tho i'm doing reallie poorly on his tests. study hard. get help asap. dont wait last minute like me. tough luck.
Great lecturer, very clear, smart and funny. Definetly enjoyed his lectures and his jokes. Adorable personality and very helpful both during lecture and in office hours. His exam was a little tough, based on lecture notes but does test on some obscure topics. Excellent Professor though.
Although he is very clear when he lectures, he doesn't seem to get through a lot of information. He does make the material interesting, but his tests are really hard.
Very entertaining and totally adorbale! I love this man! The class is still hard though - lots of details to memorize...study, study, study! But Jay is a way cool professor! Definitely recommend him and Bob!
Rosenheim is a great prof. he 's very clear and concise in explaning things, but his tests get really hard and specific, so make sure you know the material. he's a cute little man, though. i enjoyed his lectures.
bob kimsey > jay rosenheim. Jay is alright, but people like him because he teaches easier to grasp concepts, and is younger. Bob's much more knowledgable and impassioned about what we study, while Jay just says "clear as mud" now and then to make people giggle. He's ok. Not godly or anything.
Teaches with Kimsey, and they do a decent job but the class is so freakin boring that the class sucks regardless. I don't know about the other profs for this course, but these guys are probably as good a bet as any. Online notes, and audio mp3 of lectures online as well. Need to study
Rosenheim generally teaches the first half of the quarter and Kimsey does the rest. Dr. Rosenheim is an excellent lecturer. He's elucidates concepts but the problem is that he can go fast so either take good notes or buy the classical notes even if they're from the previous year since it's similar.
He's very clear when he speaks. However, his focus on too much useless detail draws him away from effectively explaining the main general concepts. Moreover, he was not able to draw my interest into the class. I would take a Gerhart BIS 1A test over one from JR and Kimsey any day.
His lectures were very calming and relaxing. He made the material very clear and organized in his lectures although he talked very fast. His tests are very hard. You can pretty much tell who wrote which part of the test base on the easiness of the questuons. Anyway, he was a great professor.
Very good speaker, very good at getting complex concepts across to the students.
He a good professor but his tests are extremely hard. If you want a good grade, you would really have to study your ass off. JUST STUDY HARD!!!
Good lectures but tests are hard
Rosenheim and Kimsey together, VERY HARD!! take the other professor if at all possible. I have straight A's and got my first F on their second midterm! Never in my life have I studied so hard and still didn't do well.
makes everything seem so easy in class, then on his tests he twists everything and you have to just guess. VERY hard tests which are obscure and very hard to study for. Also, only like 15 questions so can only miss 2 to still get an A.
Good Teacher but doesn't talk much about exam topics in the lecture. Loves to twist your arm in the exam paper. Exam might be easy if he ask the same question in simple way, Allas!! But He doesn't!
very well structured class, lectures by rosenheim are clear and organized..kimsey juz reads off powerpoint tho..a ton of supplementary study material :-) beware of tests, very hard, makes u think and apply concepts..bottom line, u really need to kno ur stuff to get an A..but good class w/ down-to-earth instructors/TAs
Very articulate intelligent and funny guy. Take him
Prof. Rosenheim tends to talk a little too fast at times but he really tries to explain the material to you in lots and lots of examples and he has a good sense of humor. I don't think the tests are so bad but watch out for the part on Hardy-Weinberg and pundit square during the first part of class.
After a streak of bad bio teachers Rosenheim and Kimsey were the first to really get me interested in the subject. Rosenheim is VERY smart and good at explaining the subject to the class. It seems evolution and ecology could be a boring subject in the wrong hands, but he does a great job with it. My only gripe is with my C+ grade (I deserved a B!).
Definitely the better of him and Kimsey. He uses the chalk board so you can follow the train of thought (versus a Powerpoint, where it's a race to scribble it down). Makes the material interesting, and he has good pacing. The tests are kinda vicious - 4pts per Mult. choice, but the short answer is generally pretty easy - but STUDY.
Excellent lecturer, writes on the chalkboard so you know what you need to copy down and helps you keep pace. Great sense of humor. Test questions were sometimes tricky.
He's the epitome of what it means to be a great professor. Lectures are clear and interest; very humorous at times. VERY helpful in lect and OH. Lectures are more like bedtime stories (the ones where you don't want your grandfather to stop telling). He's made me love Biology even more. Truly, an honor to have him as a prof.
Great professor, so enthusiastic. he gives great examples to help you remember key concepts. very approachable. podcasts his lectures.
Dr Rosenheim was a very clear and amazing lecturer. Definitely made 2b the best class out of the bis2 series. he uses the board very well to convey the information and his tests are not difficult nor particularly easy as long as you study and understand the information. great prof, would take any class of his.
Awesome professor. Helpful during office hours. Great lectures. Take GOOD notes and go back over podcasts for any missed info if need be. Liked 2B the best out of the series because of him.
Amazing professor. Always keeps you interested by writing on the board, talking to the students, and simply being a very likable man. As long as you pay attention in class, take good notes, and go over the podcasts (if needed), you'll do well in the class. I would most definitely take his class again. Best class of the BIS 2-series.
I like Rosenheim. He makes lecture interesting, and he's got a sense of humor. Taking notes is essential. They're all I study; I never read the book. Very clear lecturer, makes good use of chalkboard and gives good examples. I just plain like him.
Best teacher at Davis. Hands down. Take him if you can.
Lectures were very clear and interesting. Professor is nice and he tells memorable stories relating to lecture material. Tests were pretty difficult though, watch out.
I LOVED ROSENHEIM. his clarity is fantastic, he uses the chalk board so well (I hate powerpts), and the way he talks keeps me interested. he's an entomologist. pretty funny too. Must go to lecture or can't study. class was not boring at all
One of the best lecturers I've had in all of my classes at UC Davis. A pleasure to listen to. He knows this material extremely well, and answers student questions with diagrams and stories that relate back to lecture. Awesome guy.
Great lecturer. Very clear, does all of the work on the chalkboard. His office hours are really helpful as well. Definitely take him for your biology class. Has a good sense of humor as well.
Really great teacher, I learned a lot! His lectures are easy to listen to, no boring PowerPoint slides. If you attend class (and office hours if you need to), you should pass the exams. He genuinely cares about his students, plus he has a good sense of humor. Hope his health issues are resolved :(
He is engaging and passionate about what he does.I heard learning about diversity was EXTREMELY boring, but with him its pretty rewarding. I don't know my grade for this class yet, but I know we had no curve and I didn't do so hot on the two midterms. Questions can be tricky and m.c. worth 5 pts each. So study study!!
I really loved this class. Rosenheim is an excellent professor and obviously very passionate about what he teaches. I love how he relates everything back to the real world and uses examples that are easy to remember for tests. I feel like I actually learned more with no powerpoint. Exams are straightforward if you study with the practice ones.
One of my favorite professors at UCD thus far. He draws diagrams on the board rather than using powerpoints which are a bore. His lectures are clear and he is very knowledgeable about the subject. He is approachable and tries to relate the material so that students can understand it well. Tests are multiple choice and problem-solving. Good prof!
He is AMAZING. Take him if you can! His lectures are extremely clear and he writes on the board instead of powerpoint. He is also funny. The short answers on his tests are easy if you know the material. The multiple choice portion is a little more complicated, but do-able.
Professor Rosenheim is undoubtedly one of the best professors at UCD. His lectures are extremely clear and his humor and positive attitude make them all the more interesting. His tests are challenging, but fair. If you get the chance, take his class--you won't regret it!
What can I say, he's the best! I love this professor and hope he continues to be amazing:] hint, read the textbook before classes he doesn't focus on the material but his multiple choice are sometimes from the text. and lastly focus studying on his practice exams and study questions, don't hesitate to go to his office hours either!
Rosenheim is the best! He makes the material really easy to remember because he uses interesting examples. He uses the chalkboard and not powerpoint, which I think makes taking notes easier. His tests can be tough, but they are doable! Also, his dry sense of humor is very funny. TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN.
Dr. Rosenheim is awesome! Really good Bis2b teacher, I was so glad to have him. Study his notes, not the book, Go to lecture and you'll be fine!
Dopest professor... Hands down
I really enjoyed all the the examples that he used to explain the material, especially the first one on antibiotic resistance, don't bother reading the book, just study you notes, so takes really good notes!
He is a good professor, however, this class is not work for the students like me who is really bad in biology. His lectures are easy to understand and he used very fun example to explain the topic. However, the test are hard, the multiple choice are very confuse to me. if you don't like biology, this is not a good class for you
I love Rosenheim. I hated his tests. His lectures were interesting and he is a crystal clear lecturer. The tests force you to think like him- and to memorize detailed examples in class. I'm great at biology and still struggled with his tests. I still can't say I don't love him as an instructor, though.
Dr. Rosenheim is an incredible lecturer - very clear and easy to listen to. He filters topics of biology through a math lens, so this course is rich in formulas, equations, and graphs. His tests are tricky, especially the final. Study hard and you'll be fine, but make sure you understand every graph and every equation he goes over during lecture.
As premed, saw course largely on ecology as being "just another hoop to jump through." But Rosenheim ties a lot of these ecologicalevolutionary concepts into novel modern scientific applications to farming and medicine, ensuring that the pique the interest of students pursuing careers in these areas. He is genuinely funny, not just for a prof.
Rosenheim is a very challenging professor, but you will learn a lot of material from his lectures. His midterms are difficult, ultra-specific, and solely based off of his lectures, which are a bit long. The lab section and practical were quite easy for me. The final was more difficult than the midterms.
Rosenheim is an excellent lecturer. I believe he's even won awards for undergraduate education in the past; it shows in his class. He has specific models and equations from his lectures, so it's important to attend regularly. You should make sure to focus on exam questions, as some particularly long ones can be worth multiple %'s of your grade.
You'll do most of the learning in class. Rosenheim is one of the most organized profs I've had at UCD. He's a master in teaching. Do the post-lecture worksheets, follow the models he presents in class, and you'll do fine. He'll make you laugh every lecture, and his expectations are very clear. I fully recommend taking his class.
This class is extremely content heavy. I found it very hard to remain engaged in class (but then again, ecology is not interesting at all to me). He has a very mellow demeanor and his voice put me to sleep. His exams are almost identical to his practice exams so study the practice tests! Labs were easy.
Dont bother w text, lectures are engaging and vivid, dunno how ppl find him boring .It was a privilege to be in his class. Exams are based on his practice exams and lectures, uses specific examples from class. Lab can be boring, TAs grade too harshly. Entomologist with incredible knowledge, take him. He is a highlight in my college career
Prof Rosenheim is engaging in lecture and gives you all the info and tools you need to pass the tests and do well. He gives out lecture study guides and old exams. He's fair with his tests. I would definitely recommend him!
Nice, respectable prof but lectures HEAVY! Im a very visual learner and all his lectures were auditory and not engaging May just be me but VISUAL LEARNERS out there should know tht it's gonna be hard to understand what's going on in lect. 2 midterms 1 final, also beware of wording, posts similar pract exams but uses complicated vocab good resources
Prof Rosenheim is AMAZING! He is so kind, caring, and knowledgeable that I feel blessed to have had him. All you really have to do is pay solid attention in lecture. His tests are tough no doubt, but mostly very fair. The only reason I did not do better in his class is because I was very sick for a midterm and I missed an entire page. Take him!!!
Take him if you have the chance, you won't be disappointed! He is honestly not bad at all (except for the final, so tough he had to change cutoff grades). He gives you A LOT of practice exams and they are really similar to the real exams + he has study guides too! DO BOTH!! trust me!!! And go to OH right before the exams!! super useful!
Amazing bio professor. Provided so many resources to learn material with practice tests, study questions, and office hours. His office hours before exams were EXTREMELY helpful. Midterms were fair, but the final exam was challenging. I did receive a 116/150 on the final, but still ended up with an A- in the class. Was fascinated by every lec.
Professor Rosenheim is amazing! He is very engaging and funny which makes the class very enjoyable. He is very knowledgeable and helpful during office hours. He provides great resources to study from (I recommend going over the practice problems! His midterms had very similar topics) Midterms were easy but the final was really hard.
Rosenheim was a great Professor! He doesn't do lecture slides so you need to take pretty good notes, but as long as you show up to Lecture you'll do well. I hardly ever studied and when midterms came around I would just look at my notes.
I had him for BIS 2B, honestly, I have never had a lecturer as organized as he is. He is so good at sticking to his to-do list too, and very clear about what he will be talking about (because he writes it on the board). Although I hated how math heavy he was, it wasn't difficult it just took practice. The final killed me though, FOCUS ON THE OLD
I highly recommend any class with him. He gives outstanding lectures and is so organized. Fascinating subject made even better by the way he presents it & the examples he chooses. You'll come out with a solid understanding of and genuine interest in the material. Grade consists of a paper (he helps with drafts along the way) & 2 reasonable exams.
Prof. Rosenheim is a great lecturer and provides many resources to study from. HOWEVER, the 10 practice midterms he provides for his tests don't help you at all. Out of 10 none of the questions were the same and the questions were even more difficult. This happened on each midterm. Great person but his way of testing is ridiculous.
Dr. R is the best professor I have had at UCD so far. His lectures are super interesting and well organized. His midterms are for the most part what he teaches during lecture, so take good notes and you'll be fine. He also posts A LOT of practice midterms and finals which are really helpful too. I never used the book and did fine.
Prof. Rosenheim is a really intelligent man and very nice, I learned some cool stuff! However, his lecture style was not for me--no lecture slides other than some words and graphs he would write by hand. He has a ton of practice exams on canvas, but none were very helpful for the actual midterms which were a little too hard in my opinion.
Prof. Rosenheim is a nice guy but not a nice professor I don't even understand why he has a high rating. I thought that my quarter with this professor was going to be great but I was definitely wrong in thinking that. Notes need to be taken at a super fast pace as he doesn't have powerpoint slides and just rants a bunch of information to the class.
I also dont find his lecture style to be preferable, but I found the key to doing well in his class ( a lil late though lol). It all starts with lecture. Since his lecture notes are minimal, taking good notes and paying very close attention in lecture is crucial. It makes it much easier for you to comprehend the notes upon studying them later
His class is super confusing and he expected you to retain all the information from reading, lectures, notes.
LISTEN and take note of everything, even if it sounds like common sense or a tangent. Also, know all graphs+tables. Textbook is worthless unless you want some more info. Extra cred on test. Good enunciation but goes fast. IMO examples are too long. Type your notes if you cant write neatly. This class is a lot easier than gen chem :P
way harder than expected; no lecture sides, just docu cam notes. studying all details n graphs are necessary to do well in this class; was definitely NOT in favor of his short answer exam questions
His lectures are interesting, all he does is talk during class, no powerpoints but he at least posted the lecture podcasts online. He expects you to retain alot of info for the tests. The practice test that he has online are nothing like the actual tests so they are not helpful at all .
His lecture style works for me. There is no powerpoint. He has the projector on and writes down some key phrases and draw graphs. I was able to pay close attention and have minimal distractions. His practice tests though are NOTHING like the actual exams. And the exams are very difficult (half is MC and half is short answers.)
I learned a lot in this class, and I genuinely enjoyed the topics as he taught them very well. However, the tests were outrageous in terms of length and time. I never used to need extra time for testing, and I found myself getting through everything just as the clock ran out, and I did study. He's good, but just beware of that.
Rosenheim is a great lecturer -- he covers a lot of material but he makes sure to explain things very thoroughly, so I never felt confused. Tests were definitely challenging and you need to make sure you go to lecture or you're going to miss important material. Overall, good teacher, but be prepared to pay attention and study.
Jay is a great professor to have, especially for this course. I feel BIS 2B is the easiest of the series, and to some it can be really uninteresting. Prof. Rosenheim, however, makes it very interesting in his lectures and examples. If you end up taking him, make sure you ask about his Craigslist adventure!
Dr. Rosenheim is a great lecturer - he makes the material very understandable and the tests directly reflect what he teaches in class. There is extra credit on every test and the class should be curved (depending on final scores). He posts podcasts of the lectures but you still need to go b/c he draws charts and stuff that he doesn't post.
AMAZING PROF!! Gives every possible resource to get an A. All past exams he has ever given are posted on Canvas from the start so there are endless practice tests & answers. Study qs are also always up to go along w every lecture. Podcasts posted. Super funny, caring, thorough, entertaining. No hw, assigned readings are completely unnecessary!
Jay seems like a really cool dude, he was into the stuff he was teaching about and made the class interesting. Be aware that the second midterm is very hard, very diff then 1st, same for final (got a 98 on MT1, MT2 54). He podcasts but theyre not v helpful bc the lectures have drawings, and he doesn't post his notesAlso he lied about the curve soo
Rosenheim is a cool guy, his lectures are interesting sometimes. The first midterm was easy(got 100+ b/c of EC), but the second one was a bit difficult(got something around 80, mean was about 65). The final was alright (got 84%). He said he would lower the cutoffs, but after asking others, Im pretty sure he only lowered the cutoff for C-...
Prof Rosenheim is so confident in the material he teaches. Accessible outside of class, very helpful in OH, and easy to talk to in person. Lectures are organized, effective, and entertaining. Has lots of practice problems. Doesn't post lectures online so would recommend you attend lecture. Really enjoyed lectures and this class!
Dr. Rosenheim is a solid lecturer; he knows exactly what he's talking about and he's passionate about it too. His lecture style is talking at you, highlighting key points, and drawing graphs on the projector. I only went to lectures, studied off of his plentiful practice exams, and got an A. Didn't do the reading either. Highly recommend him for 2B
Professor Rosenheim is the best lecturer I have had at UC Davis. He understands what he is talking about while sometimes making the lecture interactive. He is a God compared to other professors. The midterms were pretty difficult but he posts all of his past tests, which are the same format every year.
Great Lecturer and teaches important things, like don't use antibiotic hand soap if we can help it. Midterms had some unreasonable questions, but still a good class. Worst thing about the class: They didn't curve A so while C- was around 60% A was still 93%. T
Dr. Rosenheim was really detailed in his lectures and made sure every student understood the material. Bis 2B might be the easiest course in the BIS 2 series, but he made the course very interesting and gave the right information for his students to succeed in the course unlike other BIS professors I've had. 12/10 would recommend :)
Professor Rosenheim is easily the best bio professor I've ever had. He's incredibly knowledgeable and the lectures are so interesting. The lecture notes are clear and concise and he's always willing to answer questions. If you have the chance to have him as a professor 10/10 would recommend!
His tests are same format as his exams from previous years, which he provides for students to prep for exams. Midterm 2 was more difficult than midterm 1, prepare for that. Grade cutoffs (no curve) are fairly generous. Great lecturer and great professor all around.
Dr. Rosenheim is a great, great Professor ! He teaches his matter in a very interesting way, and is always ready to help at a drop of a hat. He provides study questions for each lecture, and a bunch of past exams. He really tests your understanding of the material, so tests can get tricky. Take him for BIS2B, a precious gem.
He's one of the best professors out there in the BIS2 series. I honestly enjoyed the lecture portion itself. Also, has personality when he lectures! Really knowledgable in office hours too! For labs, it's hard to tell if you can do well because some TA's are very specific about what they want but they never tell you.
Rosenheim is one of the best professors i've had at Davis. Take him if you can! His lectures are very engaging and entertaining. Lots of practice tests on canvas which are very similar to midterms and final. Don't need to read the textbook even though he mentions it. Pay attention in class and do the practice tests to study and you will do well
Profesor Rosenheim is such a good professor. Hes very passionate at what he teaches. You do need to attend lecture he doesnt post notes online but he does upload lecture audios. Hes very clear at office hours. First midterm I got 101/100. Second midterm was hard I got a 50/100. Ended up with a B in the class overall hes a great professor.
He loves insects, and a lot of case studies he talked abt in class are all about insects. His lectures are pretty interesting, and he used the old-fashioned way to teach (handwriting) without fancy ppt. He is a really nice person and not a tough grader, some of his exam questions may be in his assigned readings, and the readings are a lot.
I LOVE ROSENHEIM! Excellent teacher. Fantastic and engaging lectures. Can be fast, but he records his audio if u want to go back. Review old tests because they are pretty much always the same format. Great personality, if I ever get the chance, I would love to take more classes with him.
Professor Rosenheim is one of my favorite professors I have had the privilege of having me teach here at UC Davis. His lectures are very clear and easy to follow. He gives so much extra help though optional handouts and so many practice exams. You can just tell he genuinely cares about his students.
The best professor I've had so far! He is incredibly passionate about the material he teaches.
Dr. Rosenheim was an amazing professor for BIS2B! It is very obvious he is passionate about what he teaches and is very knowledgable about it. His lectures are very straightforward, and his study questions are amazing. Do the study questions and the practice exams from previous years to study for the tests!
The course itself is difficult as it is biology at UCD. However, Rosenheim seems very passionate for this subject and has a very fair grade scale. The midterms are on the difficult side and you should go to office hours to get help on studying and on post-lab worksheets.
I miss this professor so much. He gives fantastic lectures that are very organized and structured. He is very fair and gives some of the most interesting, passionate lectures I have heard. It was a pleasure to take his class! He's a very chill guy as well and offers very personal office hours to help with content!
Avoid at all costs. Rosenheim is an amazing lecturer but he makes this "introductory" to biology class a true weeder class, and I'm not even bio; I'm comp sci. It's so frustrating to see all the other classes get easy multiple choice exams that test their basic knowledge on the subject while his exams require mental gymnastics.
Mixed feelings with this class. I respect the professor a lot and lectures are interesting. I have always done well in biology classes and I am doing AWFUL in this class. Lectures are heavy - you really have to understand the ideas he is trying to get out of the examples. I just wish they would look at how many students are not understanding it.
Amazing professor. His class is lecture heavy and there is a lot of information, so you won't pass if you skip class, but they're very well organized and easy to understand, and the way he lectures inspires interest even in non-bio majors. Very wholesome prof. Would definitely recommend!
Really enjoyed this class! There are no slides for lectures so you have to listen attentively to understand the material. The lectures are very organized and Dr. Rosenheim explains the concepts in a clear manner. Lots of practice exams were provided, and I personally felt that it was accurate to the actual exams. Overall, a really great professor.
Attending a lecture by Professor Rosenheim felt similar to listening to music. Hint: study the practice exams he provides, they are helpful in indicating what will be on the exams and identifying weaknesses going into the tests. The exams contain many of the real-world applications he explains in lectures, so take good notes on those.
Very nice guy, obviously knowledgeable + made content understandable. Lectures are recorded, midterm + final is doable if you keep up with the material. Labs are kind of a pain but also doable. If you took AP bio you should be good to go.
The professor was very organized in teaching and explaining this very material rich course. I found the exams to be extremely fair, with many of the questions focusing on concepts that are repeatedly discussed in lecture and on practice tests. I appreciated the various modern day and historical examples that connect this course to the real world.
Dr. Rosenhiem was great!. He doesn't use lecture slides so you'll have to closely pay attention to what he says. His midterms were easy if you understand the concepts and pay attention to the examples he uses in class because they can pop up on the exams. Also, use his past exams as a study tool!
Overall the BIS 002 class was an interesting class. The professor made the content interesting and provided prior midterm and final exams for studying (which I would highly recommend using). The lab grading could be quite harsh but other than that the class was good. Be prepared for studying before the exams if you want a good grade though!
Rosenheim's lectures are super interesting, he explains concepts well and backs them up with good examples. He also encourages participation. Lecture rougly corresponds to readings, but lecture is wayy more important for the tests. Final grade is just lab + exams. If you know the lecture material well (and do the practice tests) you'll be good.
Avoid at all costs! I took bis 2b and it is supposed to be taught as an introductory course and he taught the class as if it were an upper division biology course. Tests were very difficult. The exam class average was 68% for all three exams. If you go to office hours he made you feel dumb and answered your question with a question.
A very respectable professor; his lectures are basically him talking about the topics (of which he is hugely knowledgeable in). My advice: DON'T take notes of everything he says. Only write down confusing examples, general definitions, etc. bc he is a yapper. Instead, use the MANY resources on Canvas (practice exams + lecture reviews).
Midterms and final were very similar to the previous year exams. He offers extra credit on those which is very nice. Very doable and clear of his content, but ofc the content itself can be a bit confusing. Lecture is all posted as audio on canvas, but he will occasionally have written content. The discord server helps if you miss anything.
Although Professor Rosenheim does not take attendance, it is always worth going to his lectures. He always talks about the content with great enthusiasm and intrigue. Sometimes, I compare his lectures to be on par with a narrator from Khan Academy because of his great use of diction and conciseness. He also hosts three office hours weekly.
The professor's lectures are very boring if you are not into the subject. For exams, he posts previous exams as a way to study but in my experience midterm 2 and the final were nothing like the previous exams. Rather than having lecture slides, he writes on the board and provides a podcast of each lecture. Not having access to lecture slides sucks.
Dr. Rosenheim has taught BIS2B for a while at UCD. He knows what he is lecturing on and can lecture on a whole topic with just a pen and paper. He doesn't use slides and only posts audio recordings of lectures, so attendance is recommended. The class is graded on weekly labs and the 2 midterms and final. No homework. Study hard.
Very funny lectures and office hours are helpful
Super funny and clear lectures. Lecture AUDIO is the only thing that is recorded, and he only has handwritten notes and lots of graphs, so you have to go to class. Labs were easy and fun. Exams were easy and always had a good amount of extra credit and partial credit on written answers.
Tests are posted on Canvas and are very similar to past years, his lectures are very engaging, and he clearly is passionate about the class, def would take his class again
Lectures are very engaging and interesting, he explains things very well to make sure everyone understands. Office hours are amazing and he is a caring and hilarious professor. Exams are just like the practice ones, take him if you can!
Engaging lectures with clear explanations. Avoid over-note-taking - instead, use Canvas resources like practice exams. unstuck AI can also help with study prep. Overall, a great class if you stay on top of the material.
