Cool professor. Altough he's kinda strict on assignments and attendence. but its a fun class overall.
He's a cool ass guy, laid back.. do your work and go to class (on time) and you should be fine.
His class is pretty cool. But he's pretty anal on homework. He grades on how many errors you have, instead of what you put into essays and stuff. But overall, he's a great professor and his class is fun.
If Rubin were on SURVIVOR!, he'd be voted off the island right away. If he were on AMERICAN IDOL, he'd be Simon. He expects students to show up on time with their homework completed. He doesn't go for excuses, not even good ones! Still, for some strange reason, everybody loves him. Even me. :-)
he's very funny but can be brutal when grading...although i dont like doing his homework everyday, still, it feels good turning in something at the beginning of each class. Yes, he is a good man and a great professor also.
Very good instrutor. If u don't mind the work, I recommend any of his classes. Mr. Rubin's classes are very entertaining and very educational.
He is the GREATEST professor in the whole college. Eventhough he might assign plenty of homeworks, he is still a coo professor. I encourage everyone who is planning to take english courses to enroll with him because you'll learn a lot.Oh yeah, he eliminated the PAT this semester and he showed them.
Cool teacher, cocky too but its all good. A very good teacher ... just do the damn homework and do good on testes ... you'll be find, he ain't the type to pick on his students ... hahaha
Ruben's a cool cat for a teacher, wish the damn students would show up, class is down to 11 chickies; where are all the guys?! Funny as hell, grades tough but hey we should know basic English by now, right? What's up w/that girl w/the luggage? Dead body in the bag? Whole life packed away fro school?
Rubin is an excellent teacher

i really like his class he is very helpful. and class was a lot easy with him. he needs to keep it the way.
tough, organized, relentless when it comes to his format, clear directions for all assignments,a class for serious minded students great instructor and a fun class with lots of homework
His class has been one hell of a ride. The homework stresses the crap out of you and the essays are even worse. However, he enlightens his students with current affairs as well as important facts on history. He always maintains humor in his class which I personally love. I learned so much with him and even like editing papers. Highly recommended!
Not a very good teacher. Cocky. wouldn't take from him again! D-

Yes, Rubin can be cocky and his homework rules are very strict, but I leaned so much in his class that I actually look forward to writing papers in future classes. Lazy and late students will probably not like him. But I found him very helpful and clear. The worst thing about him is his wardrobe -- why that same black shirt?
yea yea Rubin bla bla never keeps his mouth shut heheh but among everything good sense of humor explains hw and so on but the ATTENDENCE GOTTA GOOOOOOOO sori rubin i think u should change it MIRO

has you on your feet non-stop. hw assigned every class meeting but the quizzes are fairly easy (open notes). he needs to be more clear on the hw assignments though..hes real strict when it comes formats when turning in papers. one simple mistake will reduce points easily (IE: putting the date using numbers instead of writing it out). overall, fair.
Mr Rubin is a wonderful teacher. He is also very enteraining. He is the best taecher I've ever had. I have learned more from him than any other teacher in my life. He also has a great sense of humor. Keep up the good work Rubin!
Mr Rubin is all right-- I wish he was more clear with homework assignments---
One of the most interesting class I have ever had. Everything is pretty easy if you LISTEN to his instructions carefully and work hard. I loved the class discussion and the way he encourages all the students to participate. I learned to learn from his class. I'd recommend anyone who's serious about their study to take his class. He's one of the bes
HE is a good teacher. I learned a lot in his class. He takes off a lot of points for little mistakes, but he gives you extra credit points when you follow his format. Follow his format, do all his work, and extra credit. Also, don't be late to class, because he won't let you come in; he takes off points for being absence.
Make sure your on time everyday, locks you out if u come late. Fairly simple class. Assigns easy hw every meeting. Must go to tutor in order to get an A
If it weren't for Rubin locking out the latecomers and kicking out the blabber mouths, it would be hard to learn anything with so many flaky students on campus. No that most of the losers are gone, my journal is filling up fast with stuff I never dreamed about learning. Rubin Rocks!
rubin is extremely cocky and strict, but i had learned ALOT from him.
This class is easy, only thing hard is he is kind of strict with heading, attendence and assignment on time. Barely need text book, you just have to have your journal with you like everyday.
This teacher is easy, funny and strict. He gives homework and stuff, but easy just follow direction. He strict with heading. He has a cool sense of humor and be clowning on some students. Attendance is part of your grade. He really do drop you if you don't show up all the time.
as problematic as he might come off. you will definetly learn in his class. very structured. pay attention to details!!! he all right ; )
this class is easy, if you FOLLOW HIS INSTRUCTIONS. Rubin is a funny teacher. he kick out lazy students that are late. he gave out extra credit for students who FOLLOW HIS INSTRUCTION perfectly. the quiz are easy, if you study hard. im taking Rubin English 1A right now, but 1A is average. if you want to learn, take his class.
A challenging teacher. Follow all his instructions, and you should get the grade you desire. Attendance is required; he drops your from the class if you miss a certain number of days. Also arrive to his class on time - he locks the door after he has taken roll. I have learned A LOT from this teacher.
he teach english 1a ok, but it is alot of work. daily homework. i think there is total of 5 essay i think. the final is ok like you need to write a essay on a topic. you learn alot of thing. 3 out of 14 students got a A and i one of them got a A. you MUST FOLLOW his instruction or you will have a lower grade. he give out extra credit :).
i really wish he teach english 5. i took 4 semester class with him and i got all A. you must follow his instruction like everyone say it here. he a strict person, dont be late! he will make you write a college essay, not a high school essay. well, it is up to you, if you want to learn and a hard worker, take this class. this class is in the morning
Rubin is one of the best teachers I've ever had. If you actually want to learn the fundementals of English, and how to succeed in college, take his class.
He is super hilarious yet he's a strict teacher! His lectures were entertaining and clear! I have learned a lot about sentence structures and the writing process. Take him if you want to improve your writing! Take him if you can keep up with your work!
I have taken Mr. Rubin for several class. I enjoyed he methods of teaching--- He have helped me quit a bit-- If you need help-- Please ask him for help- I did-- I always met him during his office hours---
It's true what they say. He gives a lot of work, and the class is pretty difficult. As long as you follow the guidelines, you'll be fine. I took his 201B and 1A class, and I received an 'A' in both classes. Also, DON'T BE LATE! He won't let you in.
The bad thing about Rubin is that he's the real deal. He made us work for our grade, yet all that work really helped me improve my writing. The good thing about him is what some say is bad: He drops the PC BS and tells it like it really is, using logic and reasoning, not pathos and platitudes. Flakes and Obamaphiles ought to stay away.
He is a qualified teacher, i give him that, but the way he demands you to write essays his way can really hurt you in the class. You will learn all right- his way. Never come late, he likes to lock the doors.
I took his class, I learned a lot, I got an A, I don't see what the problems are. We started off with a full class and ended with about half that. Those who stayed did well. The others--who knows? Take him if you want to learn to write the right way. Avoid him if you want to goof around.
I didn't like him at first, but he grew on me. I was never so happy to get a B. But what I learned in his class helped me get As in two other classes. I'd take him again. He's harsh but he's real.
he's hard but if you do what he said, you'll be ok. I got C in his class, but i learned a lot of things that it's really helpful for my 1a class..so,take him if you want to learn English.
First, Rubin is clear and precise; and he is accessible through office hours and email. Rubin is approachable and easy to contact when you need help with an assignment. I find his approach to English is interesting because it is like no other I have had. However, his course is work. If you are a lazy student, this is not the professor for you.
he's an awesome teacher and teaches very well. The people that says he sucks must be the ones that are lazy and dont follow the directions. if you miss anything then you'll be fine. If you want to learn take his class, if you just want a good grade and learn nothing find a teacher that doesn't care about you (:
He is not bad. The class is not very helpful though.
He is anal on attendance so make sure you attend his class and not to slack off. Everyone can say he gives too much work but all Engl 1A classes have a lot of work. His homework is basic enough to follow and clear. As long as you do the homework assignment everyday you will have no problem in his class.
I'm surprised that this guy has a decent rating. He doesnt respect his students. He's very comfortable making offensive comments. Yes he is clear with instructions, becasue he thinks the students dont know anything. If you're a robot this is the class for you. if you like critical thinking a discussion find another class.
Attendance is 30 points a pop. Mandatory attendance unless it's an emergency. If you like to cut class, you will be dropped. This class is tough, so do not take this in combination with other hard classes as you will require time to complete the assignments. Refer to the books and syllabus. This class is a no-joke class.
He's anal about format, following instructions, and correct punctuation. Summer courses: expect 2 essays a day. Make sure you fill in EVERY right-side page of your compbook (10% of your grade!). Ask questions; he's very helpful and clear. If you get butthurt easily, avoid the class-- he's very opinionated.
Funny guy, everyone is prone to his satire. If you're overly sensitive, you should probably drop the class. Rubin is very clear and literal in terms of what he expects. If you're lucky, he'll offer you a donut without costing you an arm.
Rubin is an awesome guy. He's funny, and he actually remembers people's name unlike any other professors. He is strict, but as long as you follow his guidelines you are fine. He shows you how to work smart, not hard. If you actually want to learn something this is you guy. Ask him about his political view, you will learn alot about politics as well
Rubin is hilarious! Time goes by fast in his class. However, he does give lots of homework. He's strict about the formatting, but he gives very clear instructions on how to do each and every hw assignment and essay. You'll do fine as long as you attend class every day, follow ALL his instructions, take notes, and do the daily journals.
A really strict teacher. Gives a lot of homework. Don't be late or he won't let you in. Sometimes he is helpful and other times he is not. His greatest downfall is that he is extremely moody. Some days it's a blast in there and other days he has his panties in a wad. I like that he cracks down on the lazy's though.
quality teacher. no bs class. attendance critical for high grade. lots of work but definitely manageable. following all written AND oral instructions is important.
If you do what he asks, you'll get the great you want.
Rubin is by far the most fantastic professor I have met. He is funny and entertaining. He's infamous around campus for being harsh and strict but if you simply follow his instructions, you will get the A you are looking for. This class is simply about following instructions. If you have trouble following instructions opt for another class.
STRICT. But you will learn a lot from his class:)
Come to class on time or get locked out. Turn in your work before class starts or he will not accept it. The work he assigns is not at all difficult; following ALL his instructions, however, is harder than it seems. He finds the tiniest flaws on your paper and deducts points, so get yo stuff didd EXACTLY the way he wants it to be done! Good luck =)
He is really persistent. And make you do homework everyday.
It's tough at the beginning; however, it gets easier once you get used to his way of teaching.
He's hard. Difficult to communicate with.. Particular about homework being turned in... And if it isn't right he'll give you an f. YOU have to be on TIME!! Or he'll lock the door in your face. Worst teacher. I HAVE EVER had. Save ur time with another teacher who actually respects his students.
He's really strict at the beginning; however, it would get easier after a month of class. He's really sarcastic but you'll learned a lot after you walked out of his class.
Jay Rubin is a character. By far the best English teacher I have came across, but be prepared for what we all are not use to. I got a B when I was hoping for an A. Rubin is pretty clear on what he wants from us, and he does not tolerate tardiness. In his class work SMART. don't be lazy. and come on time and you will get the grade you deserve.
Jay Rubin is an amazing guy. He is strict at the start of the semester, but becomes really chill later on. Super easy if you can follow basic directions; he even gives the directions out on his syllabus. Sometimes, he just gives you an assignment for the night and leaves. Really great guy to learn from.
Rubin is the best teacher I've ever had. He's tough at first, but we were all great friends by the end of the semester. His class is not for the light hearted. He's very strict, but in a good way. We often got out of class early towards the end. He treats his students like real people (after the first couple weeks). My favorite class so far.
I love learn from teacher
I took him during the summer quarter, it was rough. He was very funny, helpful and really sarcastic. We did essays every night, the only thing I couldn't get down was how he spaced things on his assignments. He had us match his spacing which he didn't know exactly what was used. You need to make your margins a perfect 1.15 inch, he will measure.
Jay Rubin is an amazing teacher, he is a tough one to be honest. He expects you to do your best, and if you don't follow his expectations he will make you fail. The best thing to do while being in Jay's class is to always print out the homework EXACTLY how he wants it. Practice practice, and practice.
I took Rubin for three semesters, and I am glad to say I did. He isn't the typical type of professor. If you are a person who looks foward to a challenge, Jay is the right guy. Best advice, keep up with daily journals, always go to class, and pay extra attention to the instructions. (He's picky with margins) but it isn't difficult to figure it out.

This class was soon hard. I'm not lazy or dumb, but very busy person. I try to juggle work and school and I almost failed!
Lot of students run away from him. My friends told me not to take him but I did it anyway. First few weeks were horrible and I wanted to drop because of the grades I was getting for the assignments. You have to pay attention to details in this class and take time. I challenged myself to stay in this class because his lectures were good.
-Bring all the required books to class every day. you never know when hes going to give points for bringing them. -GET YOUR NOTEBOOK FROM THE COLLEGE STORE! -Don't buy e-books -When he says "write between the lines" he literally means write your answer between the two lines he gives you. he has no empathy for people who don't follow directions,
If you're a stickler for perfection this class is for you. No dragging your feet with this professor. If your goal is to get into a four year college this is raw preparedness at its finest because you will be treated, tested & challenged like an upper division thinker. I got an F in his class because I missed the final, currently at SFSU. B student
If you don't follow instructions exactly as they are written, you're done for.
Rubin is an amazing professor. His instructions are clear and he is a very inspirational and thoughtful professor. He has guidelines that you have to follow but they are for your own good and self-improvement. Definitely take him for English 1A and English 5.
Jay Rubin's class was hilarious and informative class. He is a nice guy overall and has the weirdest stories to bring to class. He is sometimes a tough grader, but you learn from it. BEWARE, he is very picky with margins and formatting . You'll be fine, if you show up to class and do all the assignment.
Mr. Rubin lays out everything that is required to succeed in his class which is to follow his rules and directions in the syllabus. On a normal day, he's a hilarious teacher with an uncanny ability to tell stories on-the-spot, teach with style, and joke around with his students in a playful way. Be prepared to get wrecked by his awesomeness :)!
He is awesome sauce! One of the best English professors I've ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!
At first I was afraid of all his little directions and kept getting marked down. Once I made a point of reading directions carefully my scores went up to As and it wasn't hard at all. He turned out to be the nicest hardass I ever had for a teacher. I wish he taught Engl 5, too. Warning -- Fighting and arguing is a waste of time with him.
Had him for a hybrid creative writing class. Really great instructor. Easy to tell from his lectures that he is passionate about writing. Gives very specific directions on assignments that you must pay attention to if you want to pass. Does not give excessive "busy work" but does give assignments. Great overall and will definitely take again!
The dreaded Rub!!!!! If you want to learn how to write in the future, take the class. If you want an easy A, run. Prof Rubin breaks things down to their most simplistic form through HW assignments to prepare you for the essays. Every mistake is docked a point (Usually the intro and random body paragraphs). Have fun and learn to write!
I had a terrible experience with this professor in his online English class. His grading system is arbitrary-- based on whether you can copy his formatting. He gave no feedback m actual understanding of English grammar! I never learned anything except how to copy his formats!
Formatting is important seeing as how it can make or break your grade. All his assignments were easy and requires some books. He is quite comical and does respond back very fast to answer questions. If you take him online, be sure to check every night before bed, to see that no assignments are due because that can stop you from getting an easy A.
In order to pass, you must do your homework and get your grammars correctly, or else you will just get the worse feedback ever. Feels like he doesn't give enough time at the end of the course, watch out for the dates, he will say you have these certain days to do your work and without noticing you, he will only give you one day. GOOD LUCK.
Very strict formatting instructions. This class is not an "easy A". If you dont understand something and ask a question, he gives a sarcastic answer. He requires students to buy his book for the class, which doesn't seem ethical, but the school allows it.
He is very strict about following direction and will not take any late HW. That was always a problem for me, but this class helped me learn a lot and now I get higher grades in my other classes and this class helped. The lessons are in good order one building on the next one. The reading and writing lessons we new to me and very helpful.
I just finished taking an online English 1A class with Professor Rubin. He is amazing and his class will provide you with the knowledge required to become a good writer. As others mentioned, Professor Rubin is very specific about the instructions he provides on assignments. He requires for these instructions to be followed and will not allow for me
If you are looking for an easy A, this is not the class. I took the online class and it was a lot of homework. Be prepared to follow directions or you're grade will be marked down. It may seem petty, but its good discipline. Professor Rubin is reasonable and fair; follow directions, participate, do your homework and you will pass.
Had a terrible time with him. He gave no feedback, instruction unclear, and didn't answer my questions. He also made you buy his books.
Had a terrific time with him. He gave lots of feedback, clear instructions, and answered all my questions. One of the books was a poetry journal he had edited, and that book taught me a lot about how to improve my writing style.
Jay Rubin is a solid choice if you REALLY want to brush up on proper grammar, reading, and writing. Fair warning, there is a lot of work. I took the online course for English 1A; the material is intensive, and requires time management. On the plus side, Rubin provides clear instruction, and great material. My overall writing has improved.
Be PREPARED for the amount of work. This class requires a lot of attention to small details and always make sure to proofread everything. Although the class requires a lot of work, I do recommend taking it if you are in need if really improving your grammar. His lessons are great and the instructions for the homework are very clear.
Be ready to learn. Rubin is very specific and precise when it comes to grammar; you must check all your essays carefully before submitting. As long as your writing is grammatically and format is solid, you will do fine. Good luck!
He was a really good teacher, and clearly cares about what he does and enjoys his work, and gave me a bit more respect towards English. I feel as though if I had tried just a bit harder, I could have gotten a better grade. His class is definitely hard, and if you don't keep up you will suffer, but it is more enjoyable than other classes.
Rubin is overall a good teacher, and you will learn a lot in his class. One complaint: When he changed the due date from our usual 11:59 pm on Wednesday night, to 12:02 Tuesday morning I missed my assignment submission. It was so discouraging because I was always careful to double check submission dates. That was some unnecessary trickery man...
Took this instructor a while back. They have their own English format so be ready to learn something new! We were never allowed to use MLA/APA formatting. Not really the most helpful instructor out there, and their grading is hard. It is a lot of work and they're really tough on grading, but once you get the hang of it, it becomes easier.
Best teacher I had in CoA. The classes are interesting, time goes by faster. You learn a lot of stuff too. Very cool teacher.
I took this class online with Professor Rubin, he is very particular with the formatting and docks points for every little thing. Has smart replies when you ask a question, and in the online class at the end there was only 7 students but we started out with 30+ and wasnt very lenient with due dates. Do not recommend taking him.
If you want to become a critical thinker, this is the best choice.
This is a teacher that probably shouldn't be at a community college teaching an online class. He has no action plans or desire to work with students that have difficult work schedules and was unreasonable about accommodations. If you don't have a completely flexible schedule to meet his whims do not take his class, he will not work with you at all.
I really enjoyed this class! At first I didn't like him because I thought he was rude and overly meticulous. Initially, I disliked how strict he was about word count, but it made me a better writer. His feedback turned out to be very helpful and encouraging. I ended up with an A. This was creative writing, not sure how his literature classes are.
Overall the online class I took was pretty simple. At the beginning of the year, I made a lot of mistakes and that's why I got a B. That's all due to my negligence and lazyness. So I can't blame Mr. Rubin for that. Not only was this class easy, but Mr. Rubin gives good feedback. Just make sure you follow guidelines and you'll pass.
Professor Rubin is the MAN! If you want to improve your thinking, reading, and writing skills, do your future self a favor and take this class. WARNING: this is a college course; assignments have due dates and directions to follow. Crazy concept, right? Don't bother if you're looking for an easy A. If education is what you seek, look no further.
To be honest, the work never was "hard" just time consuming and well worth the effort. He is a stickler for details, but I admire that. Professor Rubin gives really fast feedback, it's really helpful. And the lessons he teaches are so useful and helpful. He explains a whole new way to read and write papers. I really think this was a good course.
I really enjoyed this course, I took creative writing during intercession which is not an easy feat but Rubin made this class fun and very accessible. Highly recommend to take his courses if you are a good write, bad writer, into social justice, have a sense of humor. For fun. all of the above.
He definitely has a God complex. Is very responsive to emails, but just refers you back to the lessons instead of answering questions. Has very specific grading criteria like how many lines (not sentences, LINES!) a paper should be. He teaches the basics of writing, but his criteria is so strange. You won't use what you learn in other classes.
He is very meticulous and a harsh grader. I took his class online. There are several assignments due each week. Make sure you turn everything on time because he does not accept late work. There is zero extra credit even with the start of a global pandemic! To be honest, I felt a little demoralized by the end of the semester.
Took is online class, he gives out essays every week and sometimes even two times a week. He will mark you off for the smallest simplest thing ever, but if you think sending an email and asking for help, think again because he doesn't help out. He will tell you to look back at the sheets of paper he has given for help. Be prepare to be stress.
I learned more about life from this class alone than any other class I took at Peralta. In all of my work, I habitually follow Rubin's format guidelines, and my other professors love it! I also learned that nothing in life should be taken at face value. This class really helped me become a better critical thinker.
"English 5"? More like "Following Random Instructions 5." I wrote literal gibberish that fit his formatting guidelines and actually got a better grade than when I tried a similar assignment normally. For example, he'll mark you down a whole 5% over your margins being 1" instead of the mandatory 1.13". DO NOT RECOMMEND. Arrogant and unhelpful.
I took his class in 2012. Since then I went on to get my BS/Master in Computer Science from a state school. I currently write software for a living. It truly is ashame with Peralta's current metrics for professors, they have failed to picked up what a horrible professor he is. I never have been so stressed and annoyed by his arbitrary rules.
At first, I thought he was too much of a stickler, maybe even a little snappish. He had very specific directions, such as exact word count in discussion posts. However, I really enjoyed his creative writing class and the way he structured assignments made it so I became a stronger writer, and was really able to tap into my creativity. I got an A!
Rubin is a big stickler for the rules. Everything is very strictly laid out, but follow his instructions and you'll be just fine. He slowly ramps up difficulty over the course of the semester, like a frog in a pot of water. Just proofread your work, and you'll become a much better writer.
Professor Rubin is very detailed. After this class, you will learn how to write a better essay. If you read all instructions carefully and do exactly what they tell you, you'll be fine in this class.
Rubin's ENG 1 class was a pleasure to take. I took this course online; each lecture was well written and easy to digest, and he provides a lot of wise knowledge on the reading and writing process. He's a strict but fair grader and expects students to adhere to the clear criteria he provides for each assignment. Prepare to write a lot in this class.
It was my 1st year of college so of course, there's bound to be some hardships and difficulties. But getting dropped without notice? I take my college classes seriously but this professor took the cake of being irresponsible. Sent many emails about me not understanding a thing, but what'd he do? "Syllabus" "Module". Not everything makes sense prof.
Jay Rubin is a decent professor. An A is possible if you follow all of his precisely detailed instructions. Prepare to put in lots of time and effort for this class; there are assignments, discussions, and quizzes every week that are based on the lesson. This class is quite a challenge, but you'll do fine if you can follow all of his rules.
I sent an email explaining my technical difficulties and he replied by explaining how I need to better manage my time. I wanted to drop it but decided to stick it out until he graded my first assignment 3/15 because the assignment called for 75-100 words and I put 101 words. There are other things that also fall under unprofessionalism.
This class does not even actually have to do with critical thinking and more of his ridiculous instructions that he gives. How can you have a class about critical thinking but then require lousy rules that do not make any sense what so ever. Assigns way too much work, I took this class in 2021 and I am so glad it has ended.
Gives insanely short due dates he makes you do 2 essays in one week, worst class ever, he also has zero common sense of how to give feedback, hell is a hot place Mr. Rubin
Stay AWAY from this class, professor Rubin gives very passive aggressive comments on the work you do and is super unprofessional, teachers like him make learning unbearable
Jay Rubin is the kind of rigid and egotistical instructor who can make you hate a subject you usually love. Receiving an A in his class is more about formatting than anything else. His affect is condescending and passive aggressive. If you have children, disabilities, or work two jobs, then you should choose any other instructor for this course.
Mr. Rubin gives essays every single week to complete that are due by the end of the week. He is an egotistical professor who teaches his class according to his political agenda. On the essays you cannot even use "critical thinking" if you want to since his prompts clearly are steering your answer to a certain viewpoint. Terrible professor stay away
Absolutely no critical thinking takes place in his class at all, he assigns so much work and disregards the fact that students have a life outside of class. This professor has truly made me hate English and I have no idea how he has a job. Oh, by the way, we know that you're making fake good reviews on here mr rubin. Truly sad that he is a teacher
Honestly, I saw the other reviews of Professor Rubin and took the class to challenge myself. The class is easy if you follow his instructions. Although sometimes he can come off as a smart ass (no disrespect), I felt he did have good intentions. Just listen to the feedback and do the work; it is an easy A. This class helped me stop procrastinating.
This class forces you to not procrastinate and to follow precise instructions. I'm not good at those so I found this class more difficult. Different assignments are also due multiple times a week, so be wary of due dates. Since he primarily grades your work based on how well you follow instructions, the class is fairly simple but can be stressful.
Awful class and assigns way too much homework even for a college class. You have to write 1-2 essays per WEEK, yes per week. This professor has zero regard for his students outside school lives and also fails to give any feedback on papers. He also clearly is writing false good reviews on this page since they all have the same type of writing.
I feel like this course helps you shift into more upper division class you might take at a university. It's not the easiest class but that's kind of the point. I do empathize with other students bc of the amount of work per week was a lot. However I was taking another class plus his and passes while working 2 jobs so I think it's manageable enough.
Wow thank god I dropped this class, his expectations are super unrealistic, you have to do essays that are due within 6 days and even then he fails to give any good feedback. Professor Rubin is also super passive aggressive as well and prioritizes formatting over actual critical thinking. I personally would stay away from this professor
I wasn't aware of Mr. Rubin's rating. As with any professor, he has high expectations of his students, but one thing that irks me is that he does not support students with disabilities. SAS dept told me that if I wanted to drop his class because he has a reputation for not being supportive, I replied with a "no," I am willing to stick it through.
I procrastinated a lot and my English writing is not the best in fact I had not taken an English class in 12 years and I passed. I know I could have gotten a better grade if I put more effort. I would take his class again.
The class gave a lot of work with little time given. Many rules had to be followed in any writing you did in the class, despite Mr. Rubin himself stating that some were arbitrary. If you have anything going on in your life, such as jobs or kids, this class will punish you for it.
He is very tough on formatting, but once you get that handled the class is pretty much smooth sailing. He gave good feedback on homework and highlighted mistakes, which helped me become a better writer. Weekly discussions on canvas were mandatory so it is essential to participate, or else you lose points. I'm not even an English major and I had fun
I'd say he is a tough grader and doesn't give a lot of room for error. There is no way to make up assignments and no way to submit assignments late which sucks. He does give really good feedback though which is great. I saw a few people call him passive-aggressive which is very true.
Mr. Rubins class was alright and the grade a received in his class was something that was completely my fault. I would say his class is just okay. Compared to a lot of reviews I would say he gives a decent workload thats not too stressful (High school was more work). Due dates are consistent which is a plus. Take or leave this review as you want.
Professor Rubin is a very tough grader. Even if you put an extra space on your paper you'll be docked by a lot of points. I find it quite extra that he does this, as I feel the actual content of your work should be looked at not the amount of spaces you got on your paper. If you want a tough grader and average professor, take his class.
Great class. I'm retired, dropped out of high school in the 9th grade, received a GED at approx age 35, and still passed this class. Follow the instructions LITERALLY. Analysis/literary criticisms were less important than learning proper mechanics of writing. And Professor is funny - just read some of his replies to the evaluations here.
Professor Jay Rubin was straight forward and humorous. Assignments were one to two weekly and explained thoroughly before posted. There was one or two things that remained unclear to me, but luckily he was easily accessible. Overall I enjoyed the material, and would say Jay Rubin is a great professor.
Professor Rubin was a sweetheart. Many useful extra credit opportunities, very thoughtful and methodical lectures. He doesn't miss. If I were you, I would be running to the registration desk to apply for this class. Professor Rubin taught me that there is more to life than English. Stay overtime in class and you'll know what I mean :)
First thing you need to know about Mr. Rubin is that he is an extremely tough grader. While it is true that his grading is harsh, he isn't outlandish with his expectations, and his very detailed feedback will help one to correct what it is that they messed up on. Lots of work, but with proper time management and commitment, it'll be just fine.
Professor Rubin is a direct grader. Follow directions, and best to message if needed (although his directions are super clear). Emphasizes on formatting and revising work. I see a lot of students saying he is strict, he is but I think it helps and pushes you to reach your potential. Feedback is great & responds quickly to any questions. Thank you!
Not a critical thinking class or really an english class just a shut up and do as you are told class with rules that can be as easy as monkey see monkey do or as complex as needing to do mind games with yourself to find and understand his inane instructions. You like being a suck up? Perfect. You'll fit right in.
He is pretty manageable overall 1-2 Discussions every week About 1 essay every week or two You just need to do that every week before the due date and that's 50% of the grade, that last 50% is just making sure your paper follows his instructions? Now how did I get a C if he's easy? I procrastinated a lot. :-) Kinda your fault if you fail
Professor Rubin runs a tough but rewarding class. The workload is demanding, with weekly essays and discussions, but the material is engaging. Use Unstuck AI and the free textbook to stay on top of things. With diligence, you can succeed in this challenging yet worthwhile course.
Hello. You do write, don't you? To ensure students learn, Proffessor Jay Rubin reviews basic English; then, he tries to elevate his student's writing to meet the standards of college. Language learning demands a lot of difficult work--more work than one course can provide. But by following his directions, both writing and reading become easier.
Critical thinking is essential. That being said, Jay Rubin's class is the opposite of that. He doesn't allow for critical thinking and if you miss even the smallest detail, he'll deduct points. I mean 10 to 20 pts! No matter how well you understand the material, just do exactly what he wants, his grading system and the class feels like B*
Professor, you'll find it easier to live in this world if you don't get so defensive about our feedback. Not being able to hear your students is a drop for me.
Assignments for this class are useful and reasonable. Professor Rubin is very humorous and reached out when he saw I was struggling with assignments. Do not use flower while doing his assignments (he will know).
Don't take this class. I took this guys class almost 2 years ago and it was so bad i make sure i come back and upvote all the negative reviews of him because I know that he write fake positive reviews for himself and don't want any other student to be fooled by them. Unrealistic expectations, heavy course load, and rude/sarcastic feedback
Save yourself and select a different professor. You will not benefit by taking this course with this professor. Please read the reviews below, & pay attention only to the low ratings reviews. The high rating reviews are obviously fake, & written by the professor himself, who has been continuously leaving snarky replies.
I took this class last semester and surprisingly, I really enjoyed it. There was papers every week but I felt like I learned and improved a lot throughout the semester because the lectures were extremely informative. Plus, he gives good feedback and I improved a lot because of that. I'd say it's worth it if you want to improve your writing a lot.
This professor gets the importance of scaffolding. If you read his directions VERY carefully and follow them to a T, you will do well. Summarizing, exact formatting and brevity are a big part of the class. I learned so much about the mechanics of writing and thinking. Anyone who is serious about improving their mind should take this class.
Don't take his class. He called me a slave to time when I was a full time worker/student who found errors in his grading. He is unprofessional and likes to delete comments that he finds gives other students the true impression of himself. Save yourself and do not take his class. He said I tell people to "F Off" when he got caught in his own lie.
I havent taken this professor yet but I have him for this summer yall im SCARED especially since its supposed to be accelerated. ill edit this as it goes
Critical thinking isn't encouraged in his class, you just follow directions. Mistakes are seemingly taken personally. If you're looking for a professor that helps you grow as a writer, do not consider Jay Rubin as an option. He's potentially the worst educator I've had. 20 years of him teaching is 20 years too many.
Professor Rubin is a standup guy and truly what every man should strive to be. He's patient, kind, and an absolute sweetheart who makes the classroom a genuinely enjoyable place to be. His humor is unmatched, he's so funny he could be working as a circus clown, pulling off all sorts of clever tricks to keep everyone laughing.
It's hard to critique Jay Rubin when he has so many flaws. Each day, I woke up from a dream to his nightmare of a class. Each instruction felt like a lashing from him personally. In the beginning of this class I was full of joy and excitement. Not anymore. The government should take away my rights because I misused my free will by taking his class.
Very harsh grader. Grading doesn't make sense, mystery extra points, and mystery losing points w no explanation. Unhelpful when asking questions/confusing answers. Also, one of the required texts is a book he published/edited himself, so that says a lot abt him. But I did like how he structured the modules to help build off each other.
Professor Rubin is a excellent teacher if you just follow the directions. Many people like to complain about grading but in reality, if you just follow the directions and rubric, you will get a good grade.Overall, the class is not bad at all and he is a respectable teacher. If you want an A grade and a class where you'll learn a lot, he is the best
It's hard to put into words how atrociously awful Jay Rubin is as a teacher. This guy repeatedly projects his career and personal failings onto his students. If you take this course, you are at the mercy of his arbitrary and inconsistent whims. I would highly recommend taking this class with any other randomly selected instructor.
He refuses to honor doctor's notes. His grading style is completely subjective. He forces you to read his mediocre poetry, and then explain to him why it's so good. If you give his poetry a bad review, he will give you a bad grade. He is, in my opinion, a really bad instructor.
Really bad. Condescending, and very full of himself. Inconsistent grader. He made up his own style guide instead of teaching a real one, like Chicago, APA, etc. Treat him like a god, and let AI write all your papers, and you will be fine (I wish I learned this sooner). Use any part of your brain, and you'll find yourself frustrated and stressed.
