Professor Varner is the BEST! He is so nice and willing to help in any way he can! He's really interested in teaching us, and he's really funny too! I was kind of dreading taking GWRTC in general but he made it so fun! TAKE HIM!
Favorite professor so far! Such a funny and cool guy. He makes you want to be a better writer, and his classes are very enjoyable. No one would ever have a problem with his class, as long as you do the work.
Prof. Varner is extremely nice and helpful! He is entertaining in class, although some of his material can be dry because the whole semester you talk about music in every aspect. But it can be interesting If you actually try on his writing projects, then you will do fine. Don't blow them off or you'll get a C though!! Good teacher.
I was dreading taking this class, but it has been my favorite so far! Varner is hilarious and is so willing to help. I didn't think I was a good writer, but I ended up getting an A on all of my papers, no complaints! The class does get boring at times and you have to write a one page journal for every class but other than that, Varner is the best!
Prof. Varner is the coolest guy ever. He makes the class so interesting and fun to attend. All we really did was talk about music and how it pertains to our lives. There was a decent amount of hw to do and you cant miss more than 3 classes or you fail, but hes a great guy and loves what he does
Varner is a great GWRTC professor! He tells you exactly what he expects, and I have gotten A's on all of my papers for the class. He focuses on music for the entire semester, so if you really love music, I recommend this class. The only downside to this class is that you have to write a journal for every class, but its not too bad.
Incredible professor. My favorite to date, Varner presents interesting prompts and makes discussion of boring subject enjoyable. Outstanding job!
Awesome professor. Makes lots of jokes, and gets really involved in discussions with students. You have to write a journal before every class, but they're not that bad. Only 4 papers, and you pretty much choose what you write about. Get involved during discussions and read the grammar articles!
Awesome guy. Best professor I have had at JMU
Coolest professor. Incorporates music, which actually makes it interesting. There are 4 papers. All topics related to music. He is funny and interesting. Not a hard class. Take him!
Jay is amazing! Got As and Bs on all my papers. He is extremely helpful and the class is interesting; all about music and society. Final paper is big and time consuming, but take him his class is worth it and not boring!
so helpful and such an interesting class. all about music! got a's and b's on everything
Varner is everything good in a professor. Helpful, passionate, and interesting. He is a quirky guy, but so nice. I learned a lot and my writing really developed. The class is super easy if you come from a school with a good writing curriculum. I got an A. You just have to do you journals, write your papers, and participate in class a little.
Professor Varner is one of my favorite teachers so far here at JMU. He is an easy A. Three essays each on pop culture, final project, and discussion posts before class every week. Discussion posts are five to eight sentences about what you read for class that day. Readings for class are five pages tops. EASY A. TAKE HIM.
One of my favorite classes so far. You will definitely become a better writer after taking this class. It is a lot of work but not overwhelming. Honestly one of the coolest professors I've had so far, highly recommend taking this class with Varner!
Too much work for a gen ed!!! The class was kinda interesting. I liked that the writing revolved around music. Writing assignments due almost everyday on top of reading and writing big papers. Don't pick if you hate participating.
Professor Varner is pretty good! He definitely makes the class interesting and easy to participate in (but if you don't like to participate, steer clear of his class!). There's reading and discussion posts due everyday for the entire year and it gets to be a lot of work especially while working on his essays.
BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER.
This class is a lot of work. You're writing and reading something for every class. This is the first class where I got extremely close with everyone though. You're sharing your life with strangers who become friends. I recommend the course but be ready to work!
Jay is bae! Lots of work, but super gratifying.
Great teacher! His lectures are interesting and keep you interested. He loves when people participate and it's a big part of your grade. 3 papers and a big final project, but if you put effort and work into it you can achieve an A. In my opinion probably one of the best wrtc 103 professors. Definitely go to his office hours
Prof. Varner was my favorite professor during that semester. He's willing to help you for his class or another. You're expected to write almost before every class a discussion post of 250 words from the selected reading. He's a tough grader on essays, and if you can't write well, then you may not want to take this class. Overall, he's worth taking.
He is a cool dude and you learn from his class. Attendance is a big part of your grade and participation. Has a midterm and final but they are just on grammar and correcting stuff. Gives you plenty of time for writing assignments. If you delay and do them last minute you won't get an A. Online discussions every night were a bit annoying but easy.
He's ok. I'll admit I'm not the best writer, but he grades incredibly hard. Deducts 5 points for every grammar mistake, which is killer to your grade. Very strict on MLA. Discussion post before every class that are easy but are annoying and get old very quick. Really cool classes, though. Really focuses on pop culture and discussion was interesting
Discussion posts every night are annoying and you need to read but its not so bad. If you want a good grade PARTICIPATE, it doesn't matter what you say just give feedbackadd to the discussion in class. I don't consider myself an amazing writer, got a C on the first paper but ended up getting A's on the rest. Final project was a lot of work but fun
Such a cool teacher and class. Everything relates to things that happen in your life so it's easy to be interested in it. You will have discussion posts every night and you will have to read for them, but they aren't too bad. I asked him to check all my essays before turning them in and he helped a ton! Don't be afraid to speak up in class!
Really amazing teacher! Assigns two-page reading assignment every week, but super easy and is basically a participation grade. Although there's a ton of reading, you'll discuss it every class. He's a really laid-back professor and he is always there if you ever need to discuss anything with him. Overall one of my favorite professors I've had.
Jay is a funny guy and really opens your eyes to the world around you. Essays are really hard to get a good grade on, and there is a 2 page assignment every week which pretty easy. Attendance is absolutely required and you will fail if you don't come.
I like Varner but this is a gen ed and there are far easier professors for this course. However, if you do get him, it's not the end of the world, as he is extremely helpful and truly there for you.
His class was very challenging but I LOVED him. I actually enjoyed going to his class because we just talked with him about different issues the whole time. You must participate and talk. 3 papers (2 pg, 4 pg, 8 pg) and a midterm. A huge final project comes along w/ the 8 pg paper that is hard but he is amazing. Lots of reading and writing.
This is by far the best class I have ever taken at JMU. There were only 14 students and we all became so close! There is only 3 papers and the final is the revised 3 papers that you wrote, no tests. There is a lot of assigned reading, workshops, and exercises and you must attend class. I would highly recommend! He will make you a better writer.
Easily my favorite professor this semester. His class was so fun to attend and participate in because he makes every discussion interesting. He is a bit of a tough grader on essays, but he just wants his students to understand what they are doing wrong. Be prepared to work, but if enough effort is put in, he will give you the grade you deserve.
Varner is a great professor. He's extremely helpful and is clear with what he expects. He assigns short readings and expects that you've read them for class discussion and participation. Every week there are 2 page reading responses based on the readings and there are 3 essays (2 pg, 4 pg, & 8 pg final project). It's hard, but very rewarding. TAKE!
He is a hilarious professor! He assigns a lot of reading. There are 3 major papers and a reading response every week. Pretty difficult for a gen ed.
Jay is great & I was happy to take his class. He is good mentor and likes to engage students in challenging discussions. We read and write a lot for his class and it was stressful at times; took a lot of energy, but he pushed me to purse topics with more critical thought. The class was close knit and I felt safe to share my work. Expectations clear
Incredible professor! Be ready to read and write your heart out. The class is incredibly engaging and fun. You'll become close with other classmates which is very rewarding. Would definitely take again! Go to class - it's worth it.
Very HARD grader. One time the class average for an essay was a 43. He is an awesome guy though, and if you go to office hours he will tell you exactly what to fix. Keeps class very interesting. But be ready to read and for pop quizzes.
One of my favorite professors by far. Class is always fun to go to because Varner is hilarious. There are reading assignments every night before class with a page response due. They aren't terrible but they can be annoying. The topics you learn about are relevant to your life which makes it interesting.
Jay has easily become my favorite professor at JMU. I can honestly say this class has changed me. Be ready to read and write your heart out! Taking him again next semester. Excellent professor.
Easily one of my favorite professors. He has a great sense of humor and he really cares about each of his students. The more you participate, the more you will get out of the class. He really pushes you to write a good paper and can be really tough about it, but you'll thank him later when you actually know how to write a paper! I STRONGLY suggest.
I took wrtc 103 as a gen ed, hardest class all semester. Can be mean and not helpful, please look for other professor fro this class. Insane amount of workload, insane. Responses due beginning of every class. Not an easy A.
Jay focuses a lot on inequality and the American Dream. Makes you complete reading responses every night that relate to the book the class is reading. Expect to write three essays: 1) 2 pages 2) 4 pages 3) 8 page research paper. You will be buying about 5 books which you will read and need for the mid term and daily responses. Very sassy and blunt.
Varner is an incredibly rude. He grades really hard but barely gives feedback. If you're considering majoring in writing of some sort he will be helpful for a challenge. There is reading response questions every night and grades the essays really specifically. Going to class is pointless but if you skip more than 3 times you basically fail.
This is most definitely the hardest class I have ever taken. Jay Varner is an excellent professor who is funny and easy to talk to. But the work load is a lot. If you enjoy reading 20-30pg and writing a 250 or 500 word response every class, on top of 3 big essays and quizzes, by all means take his class. Also, class participation is a grade.
Varner is a great professor, but this is one of the harder WRTC103 classes. There are papers due every MWF most of the time and there are three big papers (2 pages, 4 pages, and 8 pages). If you're taking this for a gen ed I suggest looking for easier teachers (they're are a bunch). If you do get him, just do the work and you'll be fine.
If you enjoy reading 30-40 pages and then writing a response of 500 words every night than this is the perfect class for you. Also make sure you always read very carefully because his quizzes are very difficult. His class is very interesting and I have felt an improvement in my writing. But this class is much more difficult than GWRTC needs to be.
He is a funny professor but he is an incredibly tough grader. There is a lot of reading that is involved in this class with reading responses with every one. There a plenty other professors you can go to if you have the choice. If not, just prepare to work real hard for your A.
Every night you'll read 30-50 pages of very dry, liberal material dealing with socioeconomic inequality in America and will have to write about a page response. You'll come to class and be quizzed on the same material in great detail. None of it is on SparkNotes either. Everything else on here is accurate about Varner being funny and all that.
This class was by far the most demanding class I've taken this semester. Varner is a good professor, but does require a lot of work to do well in the class. However, everything we learned was relevant and interesting. I would not recommend him if you are not willing to put in the effort and there are professors that teach this GenEd much easier.
Professor Varner is seriously such a nice guy. I've never met another professor like him because he makes everyday so interesting. There is a lot of reading in this class, so be prepared to do homework. DO NOT take this class if you want an easy A. TAKE this class if you want to learn something valuable from him. Great guy!
You do a ton of reading responses in this class. It's really good practice though and makes you a better critical thinker. He doesn't lecture- he asks you what you think and you involve yourself in a class discussion. It was difficult, but worth it. He progressively grades harder and harder throughout the semester so don't slack off. Funny guy.
Varner was hard to warm up to at first but towards the end of the semester came off a lot nicer and more approachable. Get ready to write like 40 pages and read about 500 pages for the semester. Definitely a lot of work, but my writing improved tremendously.
There are lots of professors to choose from for WRTC 103, if you'd like this class to be easy you should find somebody else but you won't learn much. The way Varner teaches this class you will have to try hard but it will pay off through better writing skills. Always attend class, participate, and try on all the assignments and you will succeed.
Make sure you do all the homework and come to class. Participate, he loves it and also gives a grade for it. Go to him for help on your papers because they can be challenging. Do not procrastinate.
Professor Varner began the class by telling us that it would be the most demanding class we would take that semester. He was right, but boy was it rewarding. I learned so much in this class, all thanks to the amazing tutelage of Professor Varner. He can be a tough grader, but as long as you follow the rubrics he provides you should be fine.
Nice professor with great intentions. He really wants to better his students as writers an invests a lot of time in what seems like custom made curriculum. Although this is great, realistically this class is waaayyyy harder than it should be. For a writing gen ed there is way too much work that is graded way too hard. Don't take it for an easy A
Awesome teacher, really cares about his students. Very helpful teacher. Lots of reading but it makes you a much better writer. Highly recommended.
Varner made this class one of my favorite classes I have ever taken at JMU. He goes above and beyond what a typical GenEd consists of. Each class is an engaging discussion that connects the readings to real issues happening in society. More work but definitely worth it!
This class was very political, a little too much imo. Each class was basically us talking about liberal ideology and politics. Clearly most people liked that, and we definitely learned about writing too, but I just had to say it. Otherwise very nice, caring and funny, and the class got close esp. after sharing personal stories which was awesome
Nice enough guy but really shouldn't be teaching. Class is often just a liberal tirade masquerading as ideological discussion, and we rarely discuss the writing at depth any more.
This class was definitely the hardest one I took my first semester. Compared to my friends taking WRTC 103 in other classes the work load was ridiculous. Although I do think this class helped me become a better writer, I would not take it again. We had at least two chapters of reading and a reading response due EVERY class.
Loved him as a teacher! Varner really knows what he's saying and really tries to get everyone in the class involved. That being said you'll have a reading response due almost every day and a ton of reading to go along with it so be prepared to work hard for an A.
Unless you want your life to be a living hell, then don't take him. Varner is a very politically woke guy, and I liked what he had to say during class. However the workload is unbelievable for a gen ed, especially compared to other wrtc103 classes. We had to buy 6 books, reading responses due every class, harsh grader & complicated assignments
Hes very political and hes got good intentions but I signed up for a writing class NOT a political science class.
He's a great professor and his lectures were always interesting. He also gives you a lot of good content to read. He makes you work for your grade but you'll become a better writer because of it. He's very honest and cares about his students becoming better writers. I would definitely take him again!
It involves work, but it gives you a reality check and I am so glad I took this as a freshman because it really did influence what I want to do throughout my four years at college. If you don't try in this course it is a missed opportunity of enlightenment.
Varner is an amazing teacher and although he gives out homework like crazy its worth it and so far he has been one of my favorite professors at JMU. He really cares about his students and really wants you to succeed and go into the world more knowledgable then when you started
He is frustratingly left bias, so much so that every single paper you read in the class is political. If you don't agree with his opinion expect a failing grade.
Varner means well and wants his students to do well, but the class is consumed by political stand points and ideology's. He also includes nightly homework assignments that take 1.5-2 hours of work every other night. I would look to find different options for your writing class.
i would never take this class again. there are page papers due every single class at 8 am that take hours to do at night. although this class did indeed make me a better writer, the homework is soooo annoying. i spend the majority of my week doing homework for this class, a gen ed. varner is such a nice guy but everything is politics based
He makes you read a lot but the reading is about the important things in our society today. If you want an easy A do not take this class. But if you want to further expand your mind and actually learn something and you are willing to put in the work, take this class.
Varner is an overall good person and professor. He cares about students a lot, and helps to better their writing. I am definitely a better righter now. He does assign lots of books to read and with those books reading assignments that can take up to 2 hours every other night. He sometimes is a harsh grader on papers, but he typically means well.
One of the best professors I've had at JMU. His classes are very hard but so worth while. You learn and grow so much. I recommend going to his office hours and being honest with him. You might not like him if you do not engage with him.
This is by no means an easy class, but it's so worth it to take it. It's a lot of reading, responses, and essays. You definitely have to work for your grade but you become a better reader and writer. I would recommend this class to anyone who wants to be challenged and become a better critical thinker.
Jay Varner is one of the best professors at JMU if you like reading and expanding your knowledge on how awful America is and how corrupt it is. If you like writing and reading almost every class and dont mind an easy quiz every class you will be fine. I SAY AGAIN; IF YOU LIKE WRITING AND READING INTERESTING THINGS YOU WILL DO FINE IN THIS CLASS.
Varner is an amazing professor. The classes and books we read were extremely interesting. HOWEVER, if you are taking WRTC 103 to get an easy A, do not take him. With that being said, I would seriously recommend taking this class with him. It opened my eyes to so many things, and Varner is extremely smart and the discussions in class are fascinating
I spent more time doing work for this gen ed class than I did any of the classes for my major. Class time is wasted on rants about politics. This is not a good choice for a gen ed writing class.
Structure of the entire course is focused on political readings with and has little to do with actual writing. I spent more time reading for this class and analyzing the text than I did actually writing. Varner can be very rude and sometimes makes unnecessary comments. I did not sign up to take a political science class. Definitely not an "easy A."
VERY DIFFICULT GEN ED especially for writing as other professors are wayyyy easier, but I learned a ton and my writing actually improved after taking his class. Very interesting but he makes you work for it and stay on top of assignments
Got through the semester only to learn what his opinions on politics are. Take somebody else if you want a real writing class.
Seriously thought about demanding a refund. I signed up for a writing class and didnt get a writing class. Everything was about his side of politics with no consideration for others opinions. Really learned nothing other than what he believes
He gets rude when you disagree with his fairy tales of a perfectly liberal world. This class was not a writing class but more of a political science class. I spent countless hours reading books that had nothing to do with writing. I came into the class expecting to learn how to write. Complete waste of time.
Find another professor or just take an actual political science class. This class was bad.
Never got any real feedback about my writing but more feedback about my so called wrong ideas.
Terrible class and hard grader. Everything we did had nothing to do with learning how to write. Learned more in high school.
I have never worked harder for a good grade in a class before, but it was so worth it. What you put in might not end up showing up as your final grade but you will feel extremely proud of yourself. He is a very good professor and does care about his students. Extremely liberal but will make you hear both sides in what he makes us read.
Hardest class filled with political bashing. Though I agreed with him on many ideas, I still didnt get any major lessons on writing.
This class was interesting and the topics discussed were necessary and intriguing. However, the work that is required to get an A is far too much, especially for a gen ed. In my opinion, he graded way too harshly and acted like his class was our only class because of how much work he gave us. For a gen ed, this class was way to time consuming.
The class advertised was a writing class but THIS class was a political science class with too much reading and really hard grading. Find another professor while you got the chance.
Felt like my ideas had to be his ideas repeated. There was too much work involved for a gen ed class and the grading was way too harsh. Classes were barely about writing.
Difficult class but should be taken to get used to college difficulty. Only professor Ive had that makes connections with students. Sort of a high school feel. Tough grader but approachable and easy to meet with. Heavy reading.
Although we read a lot in Varner's class, he taught us a lot about writing on a collegiate level. Also through the readings I learned a lot about the real world and the government and it helped to shape a lot of the views I have now. He is also willing to help if you make the effort. He is nice and I would definitely take him again.
Theres a lot of assignments in this class you have to do in a short amount of time
Although the work load is very heavy everything you do in class relates to the real world and to each other. The class may seem like a lot but I found it extremely helpful and have seen a lot of self improvement. Varner cares a lot about his student and is always willing to help with feedback.
This is not a writing class, he makes it a political science class. Extreme amounts of reading and shows no sympathy for those that dont do it. Not to mention random annotation checks, and responses due every class with little to no instruction. Straight up rude and unprofessional. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
This class is extremely demanding, but manageable. If you are engaged in class you will do fine. He is super funny but a tough grader. Take advantage of his office hours and annotate and read everything and you will be fine. He is an amazing writing professor!
Varner made this class harder than it had to be. There was reading and writing due every class and all the writing components were consumed with political undertones. Class was too demanding for a gen ed.
Jay Varner is an amazing professor. I know it can be annoying at the amount of work, but trust me when I say if you invest yourself in this class, you will become SUCH a better writer. I had him a year ago and I STILL remember/apply things I learned in that class, not to mention it's really interesting and unique to a lot of classes at JMU.
I really liked Varner, but as the semester continued the class just became overwhelming and unmanageable. It is very demanding and very politically heavy. He is really a nice guy but it's too much work in my opinion for a gen ed class. :(
way too much work for a gen ed class :( very hard
I have nothing against him as a person but the class slowly became a platform for so called acceptable political rhetoric. Theres too much reading imo and lots of opinions are shot down when they arent in agreement with his
Too much work for a gen ed and the harsh grading makes it hard to try getting a good grade
this guy absolutely sucks please save yourself the worry and do not take this guy. he will fail you for absolutely no reason other than that he's a hard grader.
Although there was no textbooks, we had 5 books to get, all were very cheap. He is an amazing guy, really cares about you. BUT, you have to really put in work. Go to his office hours and get to know him He is very intellectual and a really good guy! Although I would not say this is an easy A, I worked really hard and ended with a 96.
Expects you to work hard for a good grade. I worked hard and didnt get a good grade. Grades hard for no reason at all.
Professor Varner is spiteful, rude, and arrogant. He believes that you should believe what he believes. He also expects way too much out of you, especially for a 1st year gen-ed. He assigns way too much and I would really not recommend taking this class, especially when there are many other teachers to chose from.
This class is very hard, no doubt. However, if you put the work in, this is an extremely rewarding and interesting class. Your writing will EXCEL, you'll learn about interesting and relevant issues in the world right now about race, politics, gender, and many more. Extremely unique experience and I highly recommend !
If you work in the summer, DO NOT take this online class. Not only I have never worked harder in a class to get a good grade before, but this literally took up all of my time in the six weeks it ran. It is very fast paced, intense, and time consuming. If you want to do well, you need to spend at least four hours a day on the assignments.
This is a difficult class, and you will definitely need to make time for it. Altogether, it was a rewarding class and learned so much from Varner about writing. I recommend taking if you want to be challenged and become an all-round better writer and reader.
used to like English class but this is the hardest thing Ive ever taken. The workload is undoable and the grading is super hard
While his class was incredibly difficult, it was also very rewarding. I learned so much from professor Varner, and he was very kind to me when I was in a dark place. So if you aren't willing to do the assignments, you won't get anything out of it, but if you do, the reward matches the effort.
Not a bad professor but be prepared for a lot of work!!! He says that he assigns about 12 hours of work a week but if you want to get a good grade you are going to be working around 13-16 hours a week depending on the week. He usually assigns four assignments a week, all ranging from 500-1000 words, each of them taking up to 4 hours to complete.
Workload is unbearable and his opinions on topics are always at the center of what you have to read and write. Too much outside class work to balance with other classes
Class is more about current events instead of writing. Too much reading that doesnt add up to much.
Class is hard and theres a lot of political talk. Too much in my opinion. Acts like the fall of western civilization will happen if you dont think and act like him.
Acts like this is the only class youre taking. The amount of work you put it is ridiculous and the grading is way harder than it should be for a gen Ed.
The thing that would make this class better would be a chance to breathe. The work required is A LOT and there are times when you just cant do anything else but stop. You will learn a little bit the work required to put in makes you forget that youre learning.
He does not care about his students. Hes rude, harsh, and blunt. He gives more homework than all of my other classes combined. His class is a full time job. He doesnt work with students so if you ever need any help, dont expect it from him. Do not take his class.
Dont take this class. Youll regret it if you do. Youll work so hard and never get anywhere. Avoid!
If you are looking to take a writing class, I would NOT recommend this class. It revolves around politics and the assignments are always about something to do with government or political views. There are various assignments due each week that are very time consuming. He is a very hard grader too; do not recommend.
This was quite possibly the worst class I have ever taken. Be prepared for lots of work (we have about four assignments per week) and they are VERY time consuming. This class will take up almost all of your time. He makes you read super liberal articles and wants you to believe exactly what he believes. I wouldn't recommend this class AT ALL!
I dont know where to begin. Everything we read and write about is very liberal. Personally, I consider myself a liberal person but the problem is that he wants you to think ALL the ideas that he thinks is right. He shows no mercy when it comes to falling behind. How can you not fall behind? He assigns so much work.
Save yourself the trouble and dont take this class. Saying that it is hard is an understatement.
He is the worst teacher ever.
Impossible. Absolutely impossible. Spent too many nights crying about this class. It isnt worth my tears.
Too much work for a Gen Ed class. Do yourself a favor and don't take this class. Please.
Do. not. take. this. class. with. him. This class was an extreme amount of work for no reason and acts like he's the only class we take. If you have to take writing please make sure it's not with him, it's not worth it. Such a tough grader for no reason.
Incredible professor. It was a ton of work, but if you're actively trying to improve your writing and REALLY want to see improvement, this class is a must. While it is a lot of work, it falls into the three credit guideline by JMU (At most 12 hrs per week). Also, compared to others, this guy is incredibly organized and has a great online format.
I was willing to give this class a try, but as time went on I felt like I was completing assignments just to make sure I was completing them. That is the reason I cant say exactly what I was supposed to be learning. Worst of all was that it seemed like you had to agree with all his opinions and your grade wouldnt be great if you didnt.
he's a really nice guy that wants you to do well, but he gives out way too many assignments for a gen ed and is a really hard grader. his deadlines are at 8am which never made sense for me and there's never a break for work, even thanksgiving there was work to be due the day classes started again.
The worst class I have ever taken. Whatever you do, do not take his class. If you've already signed up for classes, SWITCH.
If you don't want to have to read one-sided opinionated work, stay away from Jay Varner. Our class was told that the final essays that had been turned in were "really terrible. Like, I don't understand how people who've completed other assignments and read the textbook are turning in work that reeks so badly." Yes, those are his exact words.
This class was barely a writing class, it was more of a political science class/ hating Trump class. I do not care about my professors political opinions, but he made sure we all knew his thoughts about our president. His feedback was bland and directions were even more confusing. I do not recommend this class!! Go find another, better professor!
A condescending feat of negative criticism and one sided arguments. Too opinionated and expects you to fall in line with his opinions making the class seem more like a political ad instead of a writing class.
You might think a 3.X is a passable score on this website and that you will somehow manage this class and I am warning you that this way of thinking will lead to many tears and long nights. Save yourself the pain and take WRTC103 another year with a better teacher. From one student to another, choose anyone except this professor.
The most heartless professor I have ever had. I had a severe concussion, transferred into this class a week late, and he expected me to read a book in three days while the rest of the class had at least 2 weeks beforehand. He says he's open to discussion, false. Preaches unity, but is far from it. Stay away from this professor at all costs.
Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Ridiculous work load for a 3 credit, gen ed class, and he acts like you only take his class. His grading is ridiculous and he is extremely rude in his grading and comments. If you have to take this class, whatever you do, take it with a different teacher.
Its tragic that I have to give at least one star because he deserves less than that. One of the WORST professors at JMU. Period. His feedback is merely used to demean his students and is not helpful whatsoever. He treats you like youre stupid then expects you to continue taking his class seriously. Please save yourself the hassle.
This guy is the worst. He doesn't care about writing at all, you just have to write whatever agrees with his opinion. He grades so harshly and his feedback is rude and not constructive.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. The amount of work for a class that EVERYONE at JMU HAS to take is horrendous. This is a Gen Ed that feels more like a high level major course. I didn't listen to the other Rate My Professors saying that his class is terrible. LISTEN TO ME DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKES!!! Especially If you are a first semester freshman.
Jay, Jay, Jay. Where do I start. Assigns a ton of homework but if you put in effort you're gonna be fine. Assigned work on decently political articles and does not hide his opinion. If you try he will like you but about half of the kids in my class didn't and put them on blast a couple times. It was a love hate relationship, farewell Jay Varner.
Run run as fast as you can you wont like this class because hes a terrible man.
I really loved this class at JMU. Its a lot of work and theres a ton of homework but the articles we read are interesting and some of the writing assignments, especially the final essay, I found to be fun and engaging. Its a really rewarding class and I totally recommend him if you like a lot of reading and writing.
I was absolutely shocked at his harsh grading and condescending comments. I really tried my best in this class and asked for help constantly but he always wanted me to pull off the impossible. I didnt even know what the impossible was.
Almost 4 hours of homework every every night and he thinks that his class is the most important one you will take in your entire life. I fell behind on my work in all my other classes because this one took up so much time. But I did better in all the other classes than I did in this torturous class.
WATCH OUT! He will talk all these peaceful things then turn that all around with super cruel comments on your papers. I really dont know what happened to my grade in this class. He lets one minor issue shape the outcome of the entire paper.
I signed up for a writing class and all I got was tirades about his personal opinions. I learned late in the semester that to get a good grade you should agree with him on everything he says. Assignments are vague and expects you to write like Shakespeare. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!
It hasnt been a full week of classes yet and this man has already managed to make us feel like we are irresponsible and worthless. It was clear on the first day that he didnt want to be here. I cant believe what I pay in tuition goes to this mans salary. What a tragedy and a waste.
Pretty pathetic I have to write a review on the first week. This was my first college class and if it is a sample of what JMU has to offer than were all in for it!
Stay away. Stay far, far, FAR away.
Going to this class is the lowest point of my day. He stands in front of the class and states all the problems he thinks exist about superior people bringing down the masses. I may only be a freshman but I know enough to see that he behaves just as superior to as those superior people he complains about.
Its scary to believe that someone somewhere thinks this mans incessant whining is an effective teaching tool. Id rather go back to high school English
I hope I will never have to write again after this class. Cant even call it a writing class.
Class should be called introduction to complaining as that is all he ever does. Complain complain complain.
His idea of critical thinking is that you nod your head in agreement with every word that comes out of his mouth. Readings are all to the left and acts astonished when you dont see things the same way as he does.
Expects you to cry a river every time he goes off on his opinions about an unjust world. I dont care what his political affiliations are, but I do care about learning how to write. And I am not learning how to write. Save yourself the trouble and do not take this class. I really feel like it was falsely advertised. Content is politically charged.
This class is bad. Its come to a point where I feel like I have to block out everything that is said in the class. Avoid at all costs!!!!?
Will bully you if you get a bad grade. I work a full time job and go to school full time and I honestly spend more time on his assignments than all of my classes combine. His idea of constructive criticism is lol Idk how youre gonna pass this class
Worst class of the semester. If you get stuck with him dont take the class. Find another teacher, take it over the summer, or just do it next year.
Jay Varner is the epitome of "didn't get enough respect when he was young so he acts like a big shot now." I mean this guy is something. He's so political, and if you don't agree with his views, guess what? You're not gonna do well. Also, be prepared for more work in this class than any other class your taking, no matter what the level.
Nope. Thats all I can say. Dont take this class.
Despite his reviews, I really liked him as a professor. There is a bit of homework in the beginning of the course but it drops off once you get passed the half way point. He is a tough grader but the feedback he gives is actually helpful. If you are looking for an easy A, then he is not your choice but you will actually learn skills in his class.
i think he gets a bad rap on here. he's really not as bad as all these reviews are making it seem. if you do the work he'll usually give you 100. all you really have to do is put in some effect and you'll do fine. i also feel like i've become a better writer from the class. if you end up having him don't stress he's not that bad.
Honestly pretty sure the prof asked students to write the positive reviews, and the featured review sounds like it was actually written by the prof himself, which tells you something.
Glad these weeks of depression are almost over. Goodbye Jay Varner. I hope I never have to write again and I pity all your students.
Jay Varner is an amazing professor and he gives an appropriate amount of work. He's very accessible outside of class and cares about your general wellbeing. He wants to see you succeed but that means putting in the effort. You cannot BS assignments and expect to get a good grade in this class.
I did well in class because I made him believe I believed in everything that he believed. Very silly. The best part was walking out on the last day
He is an amazing teacher just a huge workload and he grades very tough. You cannot skip class or you will fail.
This will most likely be the worse college class -work load wise- you will take freshman year. You need to complete all of the homework assignments and show up to class to do well. Pop quizzes and zeroes on assignments with poor explanations are also very common. Find a nice group of people in the class and try to get through it together.
Professor Varner is a good teacher for me, he gave me a lot of opportunities to rewrite my assignments and get better grades. But there will be a lot of homework and exercises in his class. So if you choose his course, please be sure to be prepared for serious study and class. Because your attitude will directly determine his grading standard!
Not about to spend 9am with this jerk everyday. Gives JMU a bad name.
If you seriously want to improve your writing, and are willing to put in a lot of time and effort to do well in his class, then he is a good professor for you. He assigns lots of work, especially compared to to other WRTC 103 professors. He's also a hard a**, so if you're taking this for the cluster 1 credit, I'd recommend someone else.
Just don't even bother I was in this class for literally four weeks and just couldn't do it anymore he assigns way to much work and grades really harshly. Be prepared to talk about climate change all the time that's the only thing he bases readings and writing on. Probably worst professor I'll ever have waste of money.
I signed up for writing but am in a climate change class. What did I miss? Grades like a snob (he doesnt think he is one but he is) and really forces you to agree with him on all he is saying.
Very rude and will let you know you he thinks you are wrong because you have a different view than him. Has to know some important people because anyone else would get fired if they said the things he says.
Yes, this is a difficult class. But if you seriously cannot find any other WRTC class, this one is manageable. Just be on top of your assignments, due the readings and go to class. The work for this course feels like a full time job.
If you are taking this class for the credit, Varner is probably the least optimal choice. This class is very work heavy in what is suppose to be a GPA booster, a lot of papers, homework, and readings. If you truly care about improving your writing, Varner is a good option, but for the majority, strongly recommend going with another professor.
Had Professor Varner for Intro to Popular Writing. He's a good professor and definitely is passionate about what he teaches, but he can be kinda stuck up. Some comments he leaves are just kind of rude for no reason, and he expects so much from just a wrtc elective. He'll love you if you participate.
Although he cares about what he does some of his comments are harsh and hurtful. I was expecting to take this class with someone else but he became the professor.
Class felt more like propaganda for left wing political policies than a writing class. The grading was pointlessly hard when it seemed like your grade relied on how closely your ideas matched with his.
Most of the homework is just busy work, but if you actually try on the semester project assignments, you'll thank yourself later. If you aren't engaged from the beginning of the semester or you don't attend class, he won't take you seriously and it'll be difficult to recover later on. The workload eases up later in the semester so start off strong!
Talks the same nonsense over and over again. Grades pointlessly hard. Take with someone else if you really want to learn to write.
No matter what do not take this professor, for any class. He is unprofessional and inappropriate with his students and would rather talk about his political views as opposed to writing. He is a mean person and truly not worth your time.
I'm actually in his WRTC 200 class, not 103. He's alright. One semester-long project that is presented at the end and a final exam. There are also some readings and small assignments. My biggest complaint is that he takes 5 points off your participation grade every time you miss class. Overall, he's much better than some professors I've had.
It sounds like he's a difficult class for 103, but if WRTC is your major, then I highly recommend taking him for your 200 course. Little to no homework, no tests except the exam, and the only actual assignment is a semester-long project that is relatively easy. Maybe a difficult teacher for other courses, but really easy for the class I took.
I LOVED this professor! I was in his WRTC 200 class, and he clearly has a lot of passion for what he does. The class was graded by a handful of low-point assignments, a final exam, and a semester-long project that if you consistently worked on, you'd get it done. His lectures were interesting and engaging, and make sure to GO TO CLASS.
If you want to learn about writing, do not take him! We learned more about politic fews than about anything. If you do not agree with him, he will fail you for the assignment. He is very harsh with his comments and make sure you do the homework! Also make sure you read the book its not mandatory but it does help a lot
Do not Take Jay Varner for any of your classes if you can help it! He is consistently rude and condescending towards his students. If you reach out to ask a question he will undoubtedly deliver a snarky response in return! STAY AWAY
I did learn a decent amount about writing in this course, but just take someone else. He makes the entire class about climate change which is odd for a writing class. He definitely has a superiority complex and thinks he is very smart. Overall your time is better spent somewhere else. Way too much work for a general education course.
for his class you need to read and make sure you do all of the modules on time. if you don't it'll be hard to catch up. He's a very good professor that is interested in climate change and you wont have a final test you'll have a final essay. All of his tests are in person but he lets you use any resource even the internet on some questions.
He was my favorite professor this semester. He genuinely wants you to succeed. The assignments are not difficult, but they can take a lot of time. If you need help just reach out and he will give you everything he has and he reminds you of this very often. 3-page persuasive final essay instead of an exam, 1 informative 6-page essay, weekly quizzes.
Mr. Varner is a really great professor. For 200, he is super personable and wants to help you a lot on the projects and assignments. He is easy to talk to and open to all questions. For lower courses like 103, he just wants to make sure students are prepared enough hence the heavier workload.
Professor Varner is one of the best professors I have had at JMU. He cared about his students, and any conceived ill-will is just an attempt to help a student fix a mistake. H If you put in the effort on homework and participate in class, you will earn his respect. Ensure you prepare for each class and print out the required materials.
just wanted to let everyone know this is the most bs professor and course. its a gen ed writing class and he treats it and grades like we are getting published. the midterm has taken me 4 hours and I'm only a quarter of the way done, just to TRY to meet his standards. he's aggressive and simply absurd and terrible. do not take this class with him.
He really helped my writing 100%! Once you got his humor and how he graded, the class was a breeze. Its just a little time consuming at times- but overall it definitely was not as bad as people said it was going to be. He's funny, just go along with his humor and if you talk back to him you will do great in the class! You just have to skim the TB.
Professor Varner is a great guy. If you put effort into the class, you will get an A. Show up to class and pay attention to his simple grading criteria. Lots of reading, annotations, and busy work related to climate change. It all gets easier as the class progresses and you will leave the class having learned a lot. Many reviewers here sound lazy.
Takes effort like any other class. I've never been a huge fan of reading/writing, but he helped me improve. Can definitely understand where the backlash comes from, but as long as you do the work and participate as needed, he'll see that and grades do reflect. He gives extra credit on the final essay if it's early too.
Professor Varner's class is no walk in the park, but if you put in the effort, you'll walk away a better writer. The workload is heavy, but unstuck AI and the free textbook make it manageable. Engage with the material, and you'll learn a ton.
Mr. Varner is a good professor, but he treats his class as if it's the most important one that I'm taking. He makes the class entirely on climate change. The thing that bothers me most about his teaching strategy is the way he speaks to his students, he is always very condescending.
Always talks about how tired and overworked he is the poor baby. Really rude in class and talks to us like we know nothing. This is NOT a writing class but more a class about how to be a professional man baby.
Varner is such a great professor. The WRTC103 reviews for him are bad because those are filled with freshman who don't understand that college is different than high school. Varner gives the best dad vibes and cares so much about setting his students up for success. Super easy course and I learned so much from this class! Take him if you can!
This is the worst writing professor I could've gotten. He makes the class all about climate change for no reason. He heavily leans left and will not like you if you do not agree with his beliefs. He is extremely condescending and rude to his students. If you do not do well in the class, He will not like you. I would never recommend him to anyone.
Very hard class for a gen ed. Makes the entire thing about climate change and how we're all doomed. Tries to be funny but just comes across as rude/condescending. Will lock you out of the room if you're not there on the dot. Treats papers as if we're getting published. Definitely one of the worst professors I've had so far, don't recommend
Crybabyjayvarner is the worst professor I had at JMU. He tries to scare us into believing everything he says and tries to influence who we vote for. Contradicts himself all the time when cries about others more successful than him and then says the most elitist things. Crybabyjayvarner is not worth it. I am glad the semester is over.
He made everything so hard and graded it like our papers were going to be published. Tells me paper looks good then I get a horrible grade. Midterm was so hard, quizzes are so hard. Makes whole class about climate change when its a writing class. Always called me out in class and made me uncomfortable. This was a gen ed but my lowest grade.
Jay is a nice and relatable guy but he starts the semester off trying to scare you. Revolves the whole class around climate change and pretty much tells you you're a failure the first time you forget something like and annotation or the assigned reading. His scare tactics honestly worked and helped me get an A in this class. Funny guy.
Defenitly harder then it should be for a gened but if you put in the work its an easy B he gave a decent amount of extra credit. The homeworks were very long and graded stictly but if you know what hes looking for you should be fine. Im pretty sure there was 2 quizzes a midterm and 2 final papers.
I took this class for a gen ed and I wasn't expecting the amount of work that had to be done. Although, he is straight forward with the rubrics and gives/offers feedback. He did a great job at preparing students for the final assignments.
This is the only class i've taken where talking to other students doesn't feel forced or awkward. Half the course is dedicated to creating your own website, it's challenging but manageable. The only reason not to take him is he can be extremely passive aggressive, sometimes seeking to humiliate people who aren't comprehending the prompts.
Professor Varner was a pretty difficult teacher. It was not what I thought a gen ed was going to be, definitely way harder. Lots of homework and readings. Along with 2 giant papers at the end of the semester. If you do your work and get it done you should be fine. He also does cold-calling to during class.
I absolutely loved this course! The class was small so you get to create a connection with the professor and your classmates. The "textbooks" are just regular books you read. The whole year you do work on a semester project and that is your final. Idk why his rating is so love I LOVED professor Varner!!
This class wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination, but Varner rewarded hard work and was very straightforward with all expectations of students. 200 is a class that heavily emphasizes work outside of class, particularly involving research and writing. Varner helps where he can, but it's primarily on the student to get it done.
Very nice professor, always available to help and answer questions. High expectations but very clear about them. Lots of research and writing with small reading assignments. No tests, only occasional pop quizzes if people skipped. Semester you work on building a website around your own research. Keep up with the work and follow guidelines to pass.
He's honestly really chill as long as you're respectful to him. Some assignments are a bit tough, but honestly, the class was still really enjoyable.
100 percent recommend Jay Varner. I was VERY nervous to take this class since writing IS NOT my strong suit. He helped me so much. I've been to multiple office hours, and they have helped SO much (especially before quizzes). Don't be intimidated by these ratings. I was before starting this course, but it has been nothing but fun. He's amazing!
He is not a bad professor, but can be kind of rude and makes the whole class about climate change, literally all we write about.
Mean guy. Has a clear guideline at the beginning of semester on class materials and books, but completely changed his whole schedule within two weeks of the semester bc he was “overworked”. Always found some reason to kick someone out of class (late, no materials, etc.) and would make a condescending remark to them as they walked out of the room.
