One of the best professors I've had. Lectures are concise and to the point. Extremely friendly and approachable guy. Answers questions quickly and has insane office hours (from 5 'til 11:15PM!!) when MTs roll around.
He is THE best professor I've had while at UBC. He was always available for help and responded to emails at an impossible speed. He actually seemed to care whether students in his section were doing well on exams and he holds insane office hours before MT's to help his students out. Great prof! Would highly recommend to anyone taking Chem 233
Great young prof, ready to help anytime. Jay is the most baller of all chem profs i've had! A+!!! He answers email so fast he must sleep with his laptop!
Really funny, replies quickly, super approachable, wants students to do well! as the others said, holds super long office hours prior to midterms and exams. Hope he continues to teach!
Easily one of my favourite professors. You hear horror stories about Chem 233 but he makes you really enjoy the material. This was probably my favourite class. Super approachable and hilarious, he goes above and beyond to help you understand. You'll love this guy :)
I was dreading CHEM 233, but he made the course very enjoyable! Whenever I had questions, he was always very quick to respond. You can tell that he enjoys teaching and really wants his students to do well.
He is really down to earth and young so he can relate to students very well. He is extremely caring and always tries his best to help his students. He always stays to open office hrs for 3 days-a week before the exam date. He is always a very fun prof so attend his class! :P
Without a doubt one of the best profs at UBC. He uses great analogies to help you understand the course better and is always more than willing to answer questions via email, office hours, during breaks, etc. Easily one of the most dedicated profs I've had the pleasure of being taught by! :)
Someone clone this guy so he can teach other courses at UBC. Interesting and funny! Best prof ever!
Best PROF EVER!!!! just the best!!!! wish ubc had more profs like him. interesting, fun lectures, doesnt mark exams too hard. THE DREAM PROF
So funny and cool! Super helpful! He is always helping out, even during the breaks, and he holds insane amounts of office hours. Best prof I have had to date at UBC!
Jay is a very hard working professor. One time when there was an error with one of my midterm marks he worked carefully, patiently, and professionally to get it sorted out even when he had so many other students to attend to. The course is hard but he teaches it very well and works diligently to help students. Highly recommended.
Jay is awesome! The class is huge and you can tell he sometimes gets exhausted helping everyone, but he still tries really hard! He even meets students on Saturday's for office hours before exams. Highly recommend for the fall term!
Hands down best prof ever. Fair assessments. Ridiculously amazing office hours during the summer session. Easy to understand. Funny. Made the most boring parts of organic chemistry much easier to digest. There is no prof at UBC like him. Seriously consider taking this "med school weeder class" with Jay.
HANDS DOWN, BEST PROF AT UBC!!!! Funny, extended office hours, easy to understand, cares about student learning, reasonable assignments, fairly easy exams. He does everything so that students become more successful!!!! BEST PROF EVER
Honestly, the best prof I've had at UBC. Not only does he pus in way too much effort by replying to emails and tweets regularly, but he also makes one of the most hated courses at UBC enjoyable. He goes out of his way to satisfy every single student. Extended Office hours. Highly Recommended.
Best prof ever!!! Very helpful and easy to understand.
Jay was the best prof I've ever had. Always available for questions either during office hours or through email or twitter. Very clear and easy to understand even though I don't even like chemistry. I'd highly recommend him.
If you're planning on taking CHEM 233 in the future, I'd highly recommend taking it with Jay. Great at explaining concepts and tries his best to make the course more interesting. Very helpful in office hours and even held them on Saturdays before midterms! It's evident that Jay really wants his students to succeed. Excellent prof overall!
This course is insane! Jay makes it so much better though. He's a comedian and a scientist at the same time. Boring topics were actually interesting because of his enthusiasm. I had heard horror stories about this course. I survived? Thanks Jay (do profs read these things?)
I liked O Chem. That alone should be proof enough to how good Jay is at being teacher. Just one bad thing: he talks so freaking fast.
Just amazing!
He's an amazing prof. He's very tech-savvy. Uses twitter, answers everything on discussion boards, quick at replying to emails. I've never had a prof utilize powerpoints in a way he does. He makes hard concepts simple to understand by laying out what we need to know on the fill-in during class powerpoints. He even posts them up after class.
BEST PROF EVER! Very helpful. Spends a lot of time helping students out (ie. Having 3 hour Q&A sess before exams on a saturday & frequently answering questions on twitter, discussion board and even facebook)
Awesome prof, super engaging and super fun!! Tries to make class entertaining and is really good at explaining. Try to get him if you can :)
Strongly recommend for Chem 233!
He is young and funny. He is running the labs for CHEM 111, although I secretly wish he was running the course too
Generally a good leader for the lab portion. The TAs did most of the work as usual but he definitely is likeable and welcoming. Remember to memorize the previous experiments you've done before the in-class quizzes, as they are worth about 10% of your total grade. Know how to do redox.
I just finished asking him a question on Facebook messenger. That should speak for itself. He is young, funny and uses social media to help students. Best prof since Dr. Sammis in first year.
amazing ochem prof!! I took this course for the 2nd time and he was 10000x better than my first one. I have nothing but good things to say about Jay
Jay was awesome! He did his best to make ochem fun and interesting and he had the best analogies. He was always available on Facebook to answer everyone's questions and really wanted everyone to succeed. Midterms were tricky but fair, and the final wasn't too bad. I highly recommend him.
Jay was awesome! He was super helpful when answering questions on Facebook and really wanted everyone to succeed. I highly recommend him.
Jay was a great prof and is probably the best chem professor there is at UBC! Super helpful, and lectures were very interesting because he makes ochem fun, and explains difficult concepts extremely well. Assessments were fair. No bad comments at all! Take his class if you can!
He's so helpful and he genuinely cares about his students. Concepts are always well explained, and expectations are really clear. Would absolutely recommend!
Jay is awesome. I had to re-take this course and he was a thousand times better than my other ochem prof! Gives lots of quizzes for practice.
Actually managed to make Chem labs fun, he's really chilled and a bit of a joker but don't get on the wrong side of him.
Best lab director you'll get, helps when you need it and doesn't nag TA's to take marks off for small things. Enjoy him while you can because 245 with Rogers is awful
This guy is a god for ochem. Highly recommend. Funny and holds office hours after 5 pm before midterms. Course notes are cool as you fill them out as you go along with him. His exams are tough. I hope he teaches other courses in chem
Dr. WIckendon is hilarious and makes lectures fun! Definitely one of the best chem profs i've ever had
Easily the best science professor there is! Very clear and concise, and provides a lot of practice before exams! He has the best sense of humour and makes going to class extremely enjoyable. If he teaches any other courses, you'll find me there.
Jay is amazing. His sense of humour keeps you on your toes during each lecture. He also runs a Facebook group for the course, and is on there late to help answer questions. Easily the best prof I've had yet. Highly recommend!
Straight up the best professor I've ever had at UBC. The course is super tough but Jay makes it passable and bearable. Really great teacher overall. If you have to take this course, try your best to take it with him.
Jay is hands-down the best professor that I've had at UBC so far. He says that he tries to make himself the most accessible person ever, and he totally lives up to that. This course has a reputation for being tough, but Jay makes it fun and enjoyable. He also created a Facebook group to communicate with students, which is also very effective.
Best prof I've had at UBC so far! Genuinely cares about his students getting a good grade. He even created a facebook group to answer students questions in addition to holding office hours. Lectures make OChem bearable since he has a great sense of humor.
Actually the best chem prof I've ever had. Great humour, great lectures, great patience - Jason is the chem prof you've been looking for. BEST. ONE. EVER. Made my enjoy 2nd year OChem even though I loathed chem beforehand. TAKE HIM.
TAKE HIM! Jay is funny and genuinely tries to help you. Best prof I've had at UBC. He only teaches 233 in the summer term though.
Best prof I've ever had hands down. Jay is hardworking, and cares deeply about his students success. I took this course in summer school and although there was a lot of material to learn and long classes, he managed to keep the lectures engaging and the midterms and final fair. He even made a FB page for answering chem questions instead of connect.
Jay is amazing. Most of the staff in the CHEM department at UBC are so terrible; if weren't for him I would have lost hope in all decent teaching staff in UBC CHEM and thus my degree.. Quick replies, hilarious, and just a great guy in general. Thanks Jay, don't ever change!! If you have an option to take any of his classes, run, don't walk.
First, let's note that I was retaking O-Chem (in the summer no less!) because I had failed it the first time with another Prof. I'm not the best chemist alright? Lay off. Anyhoo, Wickenden is UNREAL! He is hilarious, engaging and one of the best lecturers that I have EVER had. He is the only reason that I passed O-Chem. Recommend 100%
He got me into O-Chem and I'm seriously considering it. When he was doing the tutorial section of CHEM 245 I was thrilled. He's extremely helpful and NEVER condescending in anyway. He's also super hilarious. By far one of the most compassionate, knowledgeable and kind faculty member I've met at UBC
Why doesn't UBC have this guy teaching 233 in the fall? Jay is fantastic! I'm so interested in ochem now
Jay is the best OChem prof at UBC! I was afraid of this course at first after hearing all those rumors about the fail rate I simply just wanted to pass the course with at least 50% but surprisingly I did not just pass, I also scored above the class average! I enjoyed the lectures despite my general dislike for chemistry. Wish he taught it in fall
Dr. Wickenden communicates the subject extremely well, but I personally feel that exams are marked much too strictly (losing marks for forgetting to draw lone pairs in one step). This course is best gotten over with quickly, take in summer.
He's definitely one of the better ochem profs, but not the god of ochem like some people say. His tests are fair, lecture notes are great, and tries his best to help students out
Dr. Wickenden was fantastic. Doesn't take himself too seriously and is there to help you before midterms and the final. His lectures are actually entertaining. Exams are tough though.
Let me start by saying that I had to take the course for a second time. Jay is AMAZING! You don't even realize how good he is until you take ochem with another prof. I hated the way the course was run in the fall semester. He is always there to answer questions, and holds late night office hours before exams. Fantastic!
No doubt he's a great teacher, but he also tests very hard (class average for the midterm was 60%, which is low considering the majority of the class is retaking it). It's very hard to keep up during the summer so keep that in mind! Jay's such a cutie though, incredibly funny and passionate.
amazing prof, very knowledgeable, speaks clearly, teaches well, and approachable. Although Chem 233 is tough, I managed to get an A by going to class every day, listening, and not falling behind.
Jay is a great prof who really cares about his students! He's there to help you out, but you have to make sure you ASK for it. I took this in the summer and the pace was EXTREMELY FAST, if you don't stay on top of it you will fall behind and FAIL. Chem 233 was the most difficult course I ever took, but Jay was the best prof you could ask for.
Seriously the best professor at UBC. His lectures are captivating, and he interacts with the students in the room. This course is tough though. Jay is there to help, but you need to be the one that seeks it out. I got a good mark, but was in his office during most of his office hours. He also does FB live office hours, which help.
His lectures were amazing! Extremely funny while also delivering top notch education. I hope from the bottom of my heart that he gets tenure soon, because he's the only professor at UBC that really deserves it, out of the other ones that I have had. His tests can be tricky but he is ALWAYS there to help. I really hope I can take him again. Loved it
Dr. Jay's engaging teaching style, slides and sense of humour made this challenging course a delight to learn. Huge help in his office hours and ready to devote hours before midterms and exams to remain active on piazza, social media (facebook live) to make sure that students get all the help they need. This course could not have been better.
Jay is one of the best chem profs I've had in UBC! He's awesome!
Really great prof, if you want to do well, do many many practices (I used other practices books too). practice makes perfect
Dr. Jay is a superrrrrr amazing prof! I literally do not know how I would've survived chem without him! Even though his lectures are long, they were NEVER boring because he always tries to make them very interesting. He is also very nice during office hours and he always loves answering questions! 10/10 for this guy :)
Took 233 in the summer, it was ochem which is hard but Jay made it bearable, he was really hands on with notes and examples, he made sure we knew what we needed to know going into the tests. This course is about practicing everyday in order to do well, i made cue cards and did a lot of problems that he gave us to do well
Jay was hands down the best lab instructor I have ever had. He was so kind and caring and he was essentially like an uncle. I took this course in 2016 and he left such a good impression. His fleece vests are iconic. He likes to show photos of his (guess not so new) little baby so he is very friendly with his students! EASY to approach.
Jay is super funny and answers questions really well + thoroughly. 10/10 Jay, good for you.
Jay is pretty down to earth and he includes harder exam type questions to go through in his lecture's. He pretty good about seeing you in office hours but he wont reply to emails. He wants you to use Piazza. He goes through each topic thoroughly, and if you dont like giving answers in class, sit in the middle. He picks on people at the back!
He's a great lecturer and a really funny guy. My only pet peeve with him is that sometimes he gives extra information from more advance courses in order to explain a concept better, but often I just get confused and I wish his explanations were simpler. Besides that he's a gem
Hands down the funniest prof ever. He's a very engaging lecturer, and forces you to practice examples in class. Sometimes he rushes through topics because normally teaches higher level courses, but it's nice to see that he includes some tougher examples to help you prepare better for the final. Overall a great prof, 10/10 would recommend.
You dont realize how good he is until you dont have him as a prof in a different chemistry class. I legit miss this guy in class.
Inspirational, funny guy who is well-known and respected at UBC as an instructor for a reason. He will break down organic chemistry in a way that almost anyone can understand, provided you don't miss a lecture.
Excellent Professor! Love him sooooooo much!
Great lectures, a good combo of pure information and real world examples of why we needed to know things Quite a bit of work, but he made sure we knew what was needed to pass Took over control of posting grades and the discussion board, so that we knew what was going on in terms of learning outside of class
I am sooooo happy I was in Jays section. I initially thought about switching. Did not regret staying. He has a clarity of thought which is so useful in such an abstract course. His slides were presented completely different from the other profs, and they were way more useful to study from. 100% recommend
This man is a complete legend. He saved everyone in CHEM233 and to whoever is about to take the class should try and get in his section for sure. Clear explanations to questions, amazing interactive lectures and a fantastic, lovable sense of humour. Dr. Jay you are the G. O. A. T . (Greatest Of All Time) in my heart.
Hands down he is one of the best prof I had in UBC. He teaches in a way that makes Organic Chemistry more understandable and easy. Although the content of the class is fairly hard, he has one of the best lectures. Also he is very accessible outside of class, I recommend to go to his Office Hours
Best one ever taught this course
Favourite course at UBC. ever. His lectures are so funny, and his print off notes are nice to follow along and he gives plenty of practice.
Jay was a really great professor! He explained the concepts in class really clearly, but also engaged the class. His class average was higher than most of the other profs teaching the course. Not to mention hilarious, helpful in office hours, and always prepared for class. Highly recommend!
Dr. Wickenden is one of the most hillarious profs I have met at UBC. His Chemisty 203 Labs were full of funny jokes and his jokes never got in the way of student safety. He was really helpful in explaining material from the lab and was suuuppppper nice!
Jay is arguably the best teacher at UBC. His lectures are always fun, and he makes a lot of funny jokes. His grading is fair and he makes it clear what he is expecting from you in the midterm and final. Also, his section average was 8% higher than the overall average.
HANDS DOWN THE BEST PROF AT UBC. EVER. His lectures were always extremely fun, easy to understand, and interactive. Aside from being an exceptional teacher his classes give off such upbeat and positive vibes. His class average was 80% because of how fun and understandable he made organic chem seem. He made me fall in love with organic chemistry.
Jay is great and works with you. There is a lot of work in the lab course, and the material is pretty advanced. He is a tough grader on the reports, so beware.
he is very funny and seems cool but very tough grader
If you do not need to take this class DO NOT. This course was horrible. I don't know if it was the online format or what, but Jay had very little care about the students. Could not ask questions during the lecture without being told that it was an inappropriate time, and the grading scheme made no sense. I do not recommend it.
Jay made Organic chem, a historically-feared Life Sciences requirement, the most interesting and enjoyable course. His effective instruction, comedic lectures, and care for students is really unmatched. Make the effort to be in his section and you will not regret it!
233 with jay in summer means you do chem EVERY SINGLE DAY. There were HARD weekly quizzes, 2 midterm, homework on sapling which SUCKED, and then a final. He said it was to help us out, but i think it was too much and negatively affected my grade. Notes were ok but the last 2 lectures were rlly confusing and no one knew what was going on (used YT).
Someone else is my prof but I only attend Jays classes. I was just watching a lecture and realized what an amazing prof he is. You feel so present and so close to him it kinda feels like highschool. Not a big fan of Ochem but he makes it so fun and interactive.
Jays section always has a higher average on quizzes and midterms because he teaches the material in a way that actually makes sense. he does a lot of examples in class which are super helpful and prepare you well for the exams. a note about the class though: its ALLL mechanisms, don't wait for something different to come along
Best chem prof ive ever seen. he wasnt even my prof but because lectures were online i had access to everything and watched his stuff anyways. He actually makes you not hate chem and learn to appreciate ochem. if you can take his class or sit in on his lectures do it. even if you can just get his slides from a friend, helps so much.
Best chem prof. He explains material so well and his review of chem 123 taught me more than the actual class itself. He's really funny and helps all of his students. Def take him if you take chem 233.
Dr. Wickenden is an amazing prof. His lectures are really effective and he truly wants everyone to understand all the material. Chem can be a heavy subject, but he always inserts memes and jokes into his slides which make it much more enjoyable. He also is super open to communication and very accessible. 1000/10 professor!!
Jay is amazing. You dont know how good he was until the very end of the course. His sections just do better. For online courses, this one seems to be the one I liked attending. If you need to take 233, get into his section.
He has made CHEM 233 very fun, enjoyable, and totally doable. Even though the course itself is online this year, however, Jay made it as if it felt like an in-person course. He explained the concepts veeeeeeeeerrryyy clearly. TAKE CHEM 233 WITH HIM YOU WONT REGRET IT !!!
Do whatever you can to get into Jay's class. One of the best professors I've had. Made ochem legitimately easy. He's so clear and fair and funny as well. Do whatever you can to get into his class. seriously.
This is 3 years too late, but wow what a disappointment. During lab he and the other TA barely paid mind to the students who were obviously struggling. When I did manage to catch his attention, he looked so apathetic and disinterested. This was meant to weed the weak ones out, but what a terrible way to do so. Not what teaching should be about.
Amazing, understanding prof who makes an actual (and effective) effort to make students understand the material and what is required to do well on the exams. Hands down best prof for the course. Very nice in lecture and office hours. Lectures are to the point and entertaining too. Responsive on piazza and gives thorough explanations.
Jay wasn't even my prof but I watched his recorded lectures. He was fantastic, so funny and really knows how to teach the material. He's really communicative with the students, answers everyone's questions. So entertaining I watched 4 hours of his lectures straight once before I started zoning out. He really saved me, I WISH he was my prof.
Would not have passed Ochem without this legend. That said, he should definitely teach all ochem sections as most students just watched his lectures to pass anyway.
I wasn't a part of his class but I started attending his lectures and Jay saved me. I never thought I would like chemistry let alone do well in it. After studying off his lectures my mark went up by 35%. If I heard he was teaching a course I would take it just to be in his class. Jay is a legend, just trust the process and study hard.
Jay is one of the best profs I've ever had. I hate chemistry, but he made me enjoy coming to lectures (especially significant because they were online). He is funny and entertaining, but also really caring towards his students and is great at explaining difficult concepts. His lecture slides are clear and informative. Take his class if you can!
AMAZING prof! I'm not a chemistry or life science major but Jay made me enjoy the class/organic chem in general. He holds 3 office hours/week and regularly stays until after OH if students have questions and hold even more OH before exams. His slidedecks are organized and helpful to study from. Wish he taught all chem classes!
He's amazing! I was worried about organic chemistry and about the difficulty of this class from previous CHEM 233 anecdotes regarding this class' difficulty but Jay made everything make sense. If you need to take CHEM 233, take it with Jay!
Amazing prof. I dreaded organic chemistry before this course, but he made it so easy to learn and actually enjoyable. I can always expect my question to be answered on Piazza within a couple hours, thanks to Jay and his wonderful TAs. This is something that DOES NOT happen with any other class!
Funny and helpful guy but not the most helpful on Piazza when you have questions about your lab report
Jay is a pretty great prof. He was very helpful if you had questions not regarding lab reports. He has a really great sense of humor, while maintaining boss level professionalism. Just remember to make memes.
HE is amazing, he is not even my assigned prof during COVID, but literally everyone ended up go listen to his class cuz he is that good, love him, if you want good grades, take organic chem w jay
He's a nice guy but is unprofessional at times, and his comments make me uncomfortable.
I have never had a better professor. He is clear and engaging. He gives us memory aids in class. Hes hilarious and he genuinely cares about us as a class. I have never felt like a question asked was dumb. I love the multi part midterms. Honestly I want to take come chem electives just so I can take more of his classes
I was in a different section, but listening to Jay's lectures allowed me to succeed. I can absolutely say this was the best chemistry class I took, only due to his engaging, hilarious and memorable teaching style, as well as his examples-first methodology, which allowed the information to really sink in. Cannot recommend him enough
Jay is a legend in O-chem and rightly so. I wasn't able be in his class but watched his section's recordings and honestly, they helped me so much in preparing for the midterms and finals. He is great at teaching the basics of O-chem and cracks hilarious jokes throughout his lectures.
Knowledgeable and charismatic in the labs and during office hours. However, he is ruthless in his lab grading. Complete lack of compromise and sometimes unclear grading leads to lost marks that are unfair. Often is completely useless on piazza and is infamous for it. It becomes very frustrating to be essentially ignored.
I love Jay he is the funniest and most caring prof ever. He makes CHEM 233 super fun and interesting. Jay is accessible outside of the class and responds to emails fast. The exams are fair and expectations are very clear.
Amazing professor! Jay deserves the world, he is so caring and funny and is exceptionally smart!
I LOVE JAY. Hilarious and great at teaching. You'll never want to skip his lectures. If I could, I would have him be my prof for every course.
Exceptionally kind engaging lecturer. Knows how to keep it real, tells you exactly what you need to know and what's not going to be tested. Learning objectives and tailored problem sets resemble difficulty of the exams. Textbook not needed to do well, just attend lectures + keep up with problem sets. Very active on Piazza, especially before exams
One of the best profs I've ever had. The exams that the teaching team of 2023W1 made were super fair. The content is hard but they provide so many resources, tools, and extra help to help you succeed. Jay responds to piazza questions 24/7. I have never had this amount of support in any course before.
I love Jay Wickenden he gives such cool uncle vibes. Lectures are hilarious and he's clear about expectations/grading. Jay and Glen are so OP they make me love ochem. My chem profs have been some of the best professors I've ever had, all super funny and great at teaching.
Despite my grade (lol) I think Dr. Wickenden's lectures were really great!!! He incorporated many jokes into his lectures which I appreciated and most of his teaching was clear and engaging. Sometimes it felt like mans was just saying words but it's ok.
Jay is the goat. I didn't even have him as my registered prof but I passed the course with 10% over my section average just by listening to his recorded lectures. If you get a chance to take wickeden for chem you should take it. Hes that uncle that tries his best to remain hip.
Jay is the best prof I have ever. He is extremely responsive on piazza and clearly wants students to succeed. he is also HILARIOUS and his lectures are genuinely enjoyable. Never thought I'd be good at ochem but he made me love it and with his help I was able to do extremely well. literal GOAT
Nice and engaging prof.
Very open to students asking question during lecture, and explains concepts in amazing detail and depth. Very engaging and funny lecturer which is why everyone shows up to his class. Very fair at marking and emphasizes that he wants students to succeed. It's a hard course but Jay makes it all the more bearable.
I took Chem 233 with a different professor but ended up really not liking their class, so I started watching Jays lecture recordings instead. I immediately understood things better and he made sure to keep his lectures engaging and fun. He was hilarious and seemed to really care about his students. I would definitely take his class again.
Jay is the best professor I've ever had. He has this ability to make me pay attention in class. He also has a great sense of humour.
Comedic legend and somehow he has office hours every five seconds. Can I do ochem - no. But that is not the fault of this lovely man right here.
Jay is a fantastic professor who makes his lectures genuinely enjoyable. He's super responsive on Piazza and provides great resources like Unstuck AI to help you succeed. With his guidance, I was able to do really well in the course.
oh man i LOVE jay. this man is the absolute goat & i ended up loving orgo bc of him. i literally never wanted to miss a class bc his lectures are so entertaining. he also cares so much about his students doing well and answers piazza questions all the time, even at 11pm the night before the exam. keep doing u jay !!! we love u
Genuinely the best prof ever, he's hilarious, explains things really well and puts in so much effort. The course itself is hard but Jay makes it a million times better. You must take chem 233 with Jay, attend his lectures/ watch his recordings, he actually tries so hard to make it fun. I hope he takes care of himself though
Great professor and made a class that was difficult, very interesting at 9:00 in the morning. Online quizzes while not easy were fair and so were the midterm and final. CHEM 260 is not an easy course but Jay taught it well and made organic chemistry memorable. I definitely would recommend him!
I wasn't even in his section but I watched some of his lecture recordings. He walks through many relevant examples and explains concepts in depth. It is a fast-paced class, but it is manageable to keep up with. Jay is a chemistry wizard by day and a comedian by night.
You must attend all lectures to gain clarity of ochem. Jay is an AMAZING lecturer who always preps before class. He makes it clear on what skill/content is expected of us, and never turned back on his words. Always make jokes/funny comments to make his lectures even more engaging. Always provides examples to show common mistakes. Exams are fair.
ABSOLUTE GOAT prof, deserves teaching award every year. Super clear and thorough, fair exams (they're hard though) and best prof I had at UBC. Just go to his lectures they WILL HELP even if you're in other sections, JUST GO. Ochem is scary, but Jay makes it fun + can actually teach. Quizzes, just learn the content - ChatGPT won't help - trust me
literally the goat prof of ochem - jay helped me understand ochem for the first time and actually start to enjoy it. super clear and engaging lectures - he makes a lot of jokes as well. also literally hosted office hours the night before the final on zoom for 2 hours - genuinely cares and tries to help us as much as possible. thank you jay!!!!
he wasn't even my prof but i got through the class by watching his lectures. i'm truly amazed at how well he teaches chemistry. chemistry is awful but you are an angel jay thank u
Jay is the best prof in chemistry. Maybe even all of science. I hated chemistry until this class. I still don't like it, but I hate it less because of Jay. Take his section if you can
He was such a good prof but the course is hard, I had some backgrounf in orgchem and still found it challenging. But Jay is so sweet and understanding and overall a really good prof
Dr. Wickenden is very nice. I mean, he is probably the coolest uncle you never had. Talking with him is a pleasure. However, when it comes to organization, he really isn't the best. Lab criteria are severely unclear, and he is not very informative on Piazza when it comes to lab reports. Overall though, definitely a splendid OChem lab experience!
Love him. Super understanding, replied to emails so quick, and was very willing to answer questions. Also very sassy and it made things so entertaining.
Unclear criteria for lab reports. Very unhelpful on Piazza and unorganized in general. He seems like a super chill guy though!
If every professor could teach how Jay Wickenden does society would be like 4000 years into the future. I took this course in 2023W1, and I'm graduating now. Had to give Jay his flowers because now I can safely say that he is the best professor I've had at UBC. Great lecturer, good slides, chill guy and very accomodating. Knows all the answers.
I just graduated and saw Jay walking across campus. Of all my bio classes, Jay in chem233 is the prof that I remember the most. His classes were awesome. If you can get into his section, do it. They are always full for a reason. He also responds fast on piazza, which helped so much.
Jay gives very engaging lectures, genuinely cares about students, and goes out his way to provide office hours. Makes difficult material manageable and explains concepts very clearly. I failed CHEM233 once and dreaded retaking it but did much better with Jay as an instructor. I actually felt like I understood the material. He's also very funny.
Jay made lectures very easy to understand and was accessible and helpful. I walked into chem 233 thinking I was going to go through hell but it actually turned out to be my favourite class of the whole year. The material is hard but once you get the hang of it, you will enjoy it very much. Thank you to Jay for making chemistry great again.
Jay is amazing! I had to retake 233, I previously had Glenn Sammis, who wasn't bad. Jay was much more engaged with the material and always gave tips and tricks when answering questions which really helped me. He also explained that the course was more similar to a math course, whiched hlped me study better this time around. Overall an amazing prof!

Turnt chem from my least favourite subject of all time to my favourite. He's acc the greatest prof of all time and its not close.
one of the best profs at ubc hands down.
my ochem goat fr
The best prof ever. Lectures were engaging, made expectations on the exams very clear. Nothing was ever ambiguous after interacting with him.
This man saved my degree and is the most amazing, funny and kind professor I've had so far. He's so understanding and emphasizes to us the important stuff needed as biology focused students in ochem and he's so sweet and approachable. He's always sharing tidbits about his life and it's clear he's a great father and family man and an amazing person.
Jay is the most dedicated and caring prof I've ever had. He explained concepts so well and his exams were super fair. His lectures are very engaging, and he's super approachable. If you can, you should take this course with him!
Get him the Nobel prize!
Prof. Jay is an amazing professor and really made my experience in chem more enjoyable! I'll admit that ochem is a tough course to get through but he was great at explaining difficult course concepts. I appreciate his humour during lectures too :) He was also very active on piazza which was very helpful as well.
Took CHEM 233 over the summer with Jay and it was honestly the best decision ever. Made the subject the most enjoyable subject I've taken, given that I despised chemistry ever since high-school. No other teacher could explain and teach the concepts as well as Jay did. Was very engaging and funny, making me look forward to every single lecture!
Genuinely looked forward to chem lectures this semester because Jay is such an engaging, caring, and funny professor! He is also super accessible outside of class and clearly cares a lot about students. 100/10, best prof!!
His lectures are often really funny and keep you engaged the whole time! He motivates you to work hard and actually learn the material. The exams are fair, and his encouragement made the course feel a lot less stressful for me.
Jay is genuinely the best ochem prof. I was not in his section but watched all of his recorded lectures and when I started taking this course seriously my grade went up. U CAN DO IT!! This teams exams are so so fair and after the slight trauma from first year it was much needed haha. His lectures are so engaging and his teaching style is amazing!!
Jay is just amazing!
