He's a good teacher. He has a indian accent.. but you can live with it.. he also tries to be funny.. tests arent soo bad
No Comments
This man is awesome.... he is by far one of the best prof. I have ever had. He is all about helping you. From day one he had the mindframe that everyone can get an A in organic and he will do anything he can to help you. I don't think he is staying at Temple but if he is still here and you need to take the class make sure it is with him.
Dr. Gilbert is very intelligent. He is nice and fun to have as your professor. His test is easy as long you are prepared for his class. I have him for Inorganic Synthesis which is a lab course and he made the lab class such a fun experience. He is willing to help you if you have any questions. An excellant professor.
hes not easy; hard to understand if u dont read or pay attn; sleepers beware, he will point u out! haha ... he's funny though
Dr. Gilbert can be hard to understand sometimes. But if you have a question, he will never make you feel dumb. He is humorous, a fair grader, a nice guy. Knowledgable, interesting. If you have to take Chemistry, try to get him for a teacher.
Great teacher! Best chem teacher! Tests are hard but the curves are amazing!
This guy is AWESOME!! The best Chemistry teacher ever, turns what may be a dull subject into something interesting. He is funny as hell too. His tests are fair if you study the material and attend class.
He is truly the best teacher I ever had. I dont care what any other ratings say, this man is amazing. He curves all the test so that everyone have a chance to pass. His tests are super EASY. what more can you ask for? The man care about his students and want everyone to pass. I wish I could take him for all my chemistry classes.
Great teacher!! The best chem teacher I ever had. Makes no assumptions that you know your stuff. Highly recommend him.
Great teacher with lots of patients. His powerpoint slides are helpful and hes great for office hours. Pretty funny and always picked people out in class for cell phone use and sleeping. He knows the material and can present it clearly. Tests are good if you just do your work.
Gilbert is great! Definitely take his class. He makes great slide shows that tell you exactly what to know for the tests and he is a really funny guy. I had him for technically a one day a week 4 hour night class and he always gave us at least a 15min break and sometimes 5pts extra credit on exams if you stayed for the 2nd half. Seriously, take him
Great guy. Tries to be funny and most times, he succeeds. Quizzes every week and several homework assignments but relatively easy. Exams are almost straight from his lecture notes (PowerPoint slides,) which are provided to students in advance of class.
I took this course summer 2007. Prof.Gilbert is very helpful and uses funny powerpoint slides to make orgo. interesting. He gives out a lot of bonus points for attending class, and really wants his students to succeed. Best science prof. I've had.
Im in the business school, and took chem as an elective. he is so much more laidback than most professors, and is pretty cool to students who are respectful. I mostly took this class bc of the easy ratings he had on here. Class required a little more work than I thought, and was actually somewhat challenging at times, but I still managed an A.
Very helpful and very nice. Tests are straight from the powerpoints.
He's a very fun professor, very witty. He's pretty thorough in what he teachers, but during lectures, he'll skip between the powerpoint and handwritten notes pretty quickly, which can seem a bit disorganized, but so is the mind of a science person :P Anyway, the exams are okay, but he does offer review sessions and office hours- use them!
He's awesome. He has a good sense of humor. His test are easier then the rest of the chemistry classes. He does powerpoints but they are very helpful. If you study the notes and powerpoints you will do great on the midterms
A very funny teacher, sometimes the accent prevents you from understanding his lectures. But everything that you need to know for the midterms is on his powerpoints. Even though his midterms might be easy and straight from the powerpoints, does not really prepare you for the final. Overall a very nice and helpful teacher.
easy tests, very helpful, boring lectures. he kinda picks on people during class and call you out on things but other than that he's pretty nice and funny. i'd take him again
Funny teacher, but not helpful. His midterms were real easy and then the final was super hard because he doesn't prepare you. Don't email him a question because he won't get back to you.
Great guy, funny/quirky sense of humor that is greatly appreciated. Follows textbook closely, but its a good thing. Grading policy is fair, midterms pretty accurately reflect what is taught in class.
I will give you true to the honest review :-His tests are different from the practice tests. Rely heavily on Textbook to get above 84+. His grades are curve so its hard to get below C.He is a nice guy and will answer your questions, if you ask him. He is one of the best Chem professor and if you study an hour or 2 a week you will get an A.
Tests are definitely easier than price or childs study the practice test he posts on line and you will get at least a B on every test. He is also teaches well and has a good sense of humor.
this was hard, chemistry is hard but he does curve. His exams are powerpoint based so definitely study that. he is a pretty funny professor also.
Good Teacher, his lectures are straight to the point and easy to understand, though he does have an accent. I thought his test were pretty easy but the class is graded on a curve, so you are graded on how well you did prepared to others. I believe that he did a very good job of preparing us for the final and for gen chem 2. Also pretty funny.
Material comes out of textbook so just study that with the powerpoints. Only showed up on test days and office hours and got an A. Very helpful in office hours and overall a pretty cool guy. Explains things well and calls on people in class.
Chem is chem. Its gonna be a little harder for most to grasp. Gilbert is awesome! Relates material to everyday life making it a lot easier to retain and understand ... also has an awesome sense of humor!! Highly recommended.
He relates class content to real life pretty well, but he gets off topic fairly often.
Gets off topic SO OFTEN. Do not recommend if your major is chemistry dependent or if you actually want to learn in class.
Gilbert is the complete package- he is a great guy, a great professor, and his exams are totally manageable. He can move a little fast during lectures, but his powerpoints are very clear and easy to understand. He is one of my favorite professors I've had a Temple. Highly recommend.
Dr. Gilbert is a great professor who at times may seem easy, but he does a great job of teaching the material. His exams are extremely manageable and you should get at least an 84. Use his powerpoints since some of the questions come straight from the powerpoint. He is also very kind and helpful during office hours. Don't forget to use the textbook
Dr. Gilbert one of the best in chemistry teaching. He let the course go through so easily. His exams are pretty much easy to handle. Also his power-points is a good source to study from as it summarizes the textbook very well. Not as many says, he prepare you well for the final. All in all, Dr. Gilbert is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for an easy A.
I had to teach myself from the book. He gets off topic, skips power points, and here is a language barrier. Just because he is easy does not mean you will pass the class. If you're good at self teaching, take him, otherwise take a prof that offers more of a challenge.
Gilbert is a nice man & his tests are pretty easy. However,I found myself consistently teaching myself the entire course. I did well on the 4 midterms (he drops your lowest one), however I failed the final (the average was failing). It dropped my grade from an A to a B. So be weary that his class is easier than the other chem & it hinders learning.
Gilbert is a nice man, with a heavy accent. His 4 midterms aren't hard, but the final is. Attendance is not mandatory. Buying the textbook is important. There's online homework that isn't impossible, but still not easy. I would recommend taking him, it's just a difficult subject.
Good prof. but you need to work too
Attend lectures and you should do fine.
Great professor. He has a thick accent but is hilarious once you learn how to understand it. Attendance is definetely optional as he spends about half the class periods telling funny stories. As long as you get ready for each exam by doing the practice problems he posts you will do fine. Id take another class with him.
Best Chem professor at temple. One of the few good professor and a really nice guy. Not many personable people but Gilbert is 1.
Quirky and timely sense of humor, efficient lecturer and problem solver. Homework is infrequent and not difficult.
Great teacher, really funny and helpful. He understands that students have classes and lives outside of his class and is sure to cater to that. Tests are easy, final is pretty difficult but if you prepare well you'll be fine!
This man was horrible at teaching. We thought our selves the entire course basically. Tests were brutally hard, average was a 65. His final average was a 58. He tells you, he passes a 60 which is a complete lie. He doesn't care about any students and we all are cheaters unless proven otherwise. If you want to succeed in chemistry take someone else.
He's a nice guy and very funny, but very paranoid about people cheating. Chem is a tough class so you need to put in work but he has a really big curve so you should be fine.
TAKE GILBERT. Huge curve and hilarious. DO NOT CHEAT. He will call you out and rip up your exam. One student said " I swear to God I wasn't cheating" and Gilbert replied "Too bad I don't believe in God." Does not want to have you again so he will pass you with a C even if you have a 60. Gives 4 exams and your lowest is dropped. Final was hard tho
Very good at explaining concepts. The language barrier can be tough at first, but it's not a problem once you get use to it. He is very friendly and eager to help during office hours. ZERO TOLERANCE for cheating, He WILL kick you out of an exam if he catches you. Keeps lectures interesting, I would absolutely take him again.
Hr is such an amazing teacher and I would definitely take him again.
Hilarious lecture! Don't skip though, its easy to get lost in the class. Overall great at explaining things and willing to spend time during office hours to go over any questions. Tests aren't that hard he gives practice exams a few days before the actual test and its pretty similar. Overall a great professor!
He is a very good chemistry teacher and is a funny guy. I rarely went to class and did fine in this course. Don't let him catch you on your phone in class or he will roast you in front of everyone. Definitely would take him again. Didn't use the textbook at all because he posts all the notes online, but it may be helpful if you're not great at chem
Lecture was okay. Some days he put everyone to sleep, other days were really fun. He tries to make test easier by giving you formulas but the tests are still hard.
Was a tough grader, but went off topic a lot in lecture (which is a good thing) and joked around and what not. He was all around a good teacher and a good person. Very easy to talk to and helped out A LOT in office hours! Use them and you'll pass, no doubt!!
Professor Gilbert was the best! I would not say his exams are easy but if you read the textbook, do the worksheets he posts, and put in the effort, you are sure to get an A. I took this class during a rough time in my life and gilbert really made me lighten up especially with his life advice rampages in lecture. Overall, I would 100% recommend.
If you enjoy chemistry and have a good grasp on the basics before taking the class, it is very enjoyable. Sit near the front so you can hear/understand his lectures better!
Gilbert can't teach. His lectures are confusing, he doesn't follow the syllabus, his exams have many typos that need to be corrected DURING THE EXAM. I learned from his online lecture notes that he never uses. Anyway, I'd say avoid, but he's the only one that teaches chem for engineers.
Pros -easy midterms and final -no quizzes, projects or assignments -barely any homework -lecture slides uploaded on Blackboard -no book required, slides are enough Cons -his accent might seem a bit thick at first -
Great guy. Took him for Chemistry for Engineers as I think he's the only professor that teaches the course. Really funny, passionate about his subject, and very sensible grader. Don't play on your phone or computer during class, though, you will get called out!
Go to class, take notes, read the powerpoint slides in prep for tests. You will do fine. Great teacher
Even though the material may be challenging, Dr. Gilbert does a really good job of conveying it in a way that most people can understand it. He also uses a lot of examples to help you prepare. Basically, if you go to class and pay some attention, read the book, and you'll be fine.
Dr. Gilbert is one of the funniest professors that I've had at Temple. He really gets to know everyone (provided that you actually show up) and tells a lot of interesting stories. My only complaint of the class is that he glosses over a lot of topics and I personally would have enjoyed the class more if we went more in depth.
He was easily the most hilarious chem prof. His lectures were a hit or miss but if you show up the test should be easy. he would always make the class enjoyable with his whisky jokes. cool dude
No curve
Very thorough lectures, and keeps the class attentive despite the weariness of waking up at 8am. Great sense of humor too, and also open to help students in and out of class. Not necessarily from the prof, but make sure to keep up with lectures as pop quizzes (recitation) will drop your grade fast if you don't pay attention well.
There's barely any online hw, the recitation quizzes are pretty difficult but can boost your score if you do well in them, his tests are hard as well. But he's a good teacher and funny too. I suggest you take him, he also curves nicely
If you go to his office hours and speak with him about your grade he will definitely help you out. Also he curves the exams which helps everyone. Best professor for gen chem 2!
Had Dr. Gilbert for Crystallography. He was honestly really helpful and really wanted us to know the content rather than giving more difficult questions. Definitely learned a lot, and he is super approachable and just has a great personality. The course itself taught me a lot of cool stuff and I highly recommend. If he's an option, do it.
Very friendly and enjoyable lecture. He always answered questions and was not out to give anyone a hard time. My only complaint is if you like lots of practice problems you will not have many. He usually only provided one example problem Per chapter and its from the book. So you wont get much variation on harder problems to practice.
I love Dr. Gilbert. He can be a little hard to understand sometimes but it's not too bad. He makes funny comments a lot in class, he is an excellent professor, and he gives a lot of practice worksheets and practice midterms which are helpful for the exams. I got sick during the semester and he was extremely caring and accommodating.
His zoom lectures help you complete the modules. He goes over the questions on the module quizzes with different numbers. He is very funny and gets to know his students (if you show up). Would take him again, but I didn't like how CHEM 1031 was set up this online semester in general.
Very helpful as he isnt my assigned professor and took the leadership and helped me during office hours with a reply back within 5-10 minutes (as I was unsure out of the 3 professors which I was supposed to contact). Otherwise, the online chem lecture / structure was an absolute nightmare for students and this prof made it a little easier.
It's not Prof Gilbert's fault, but whoever created the set up of this online general chemistry class doesn't deserve a job. The class was set up so that you don't have to go to lectures or any zooms, you only have to complete the readings and quizzes for each module. I genuinely feel like I learned nothing in this class.
Adv Inorganic was a good class with Dr. Gilbert. You spend a lot of time on group theory but if you've taken PChem 2, it is actually quite insightful and explains a lot of things we assume. Exams are straightforward if you read the notes; there aren't any surprises. Just make sure to read. Cool class, good lecture, only problem is the 8 am start.
Great professor, easy course. he cracks a lot of jokes and makes the classroom a fun place to be. I had him in Fall of 2019.
He tells a lot of jokes, and has entertaining lectures
As someone who hates learning chemistry topics, professor Gilbert made them very entertaining and simple. Class is short and easy and the exams aren't very difficult. He's funny and down to earth which makes class enjoyable.
Lectures can be boring (it's chemistry, come on), but he makes the class less bleak. I actually find myself looking forward to his classes sometimes to wash away the dread I feel after some of my other lectures. Easy content, easy tests, easy class. Doesn't take attendance and posts exam dates so you can just study and show up for exams, easy A.
Content is slightly challenging but still very easily doable especially with his and the TA's handouts. Hilarious guy and makes an 8 am chemistry class something to look forward to.
Horrible lectures. Doesn't take his job seriously and he doesn't care about his students progress. He can be very rude and impatient. Never taking his lecture again. Worst class of my life
Very Horrible, won't take him again, does not care for his students, Does not answer your questions on time have to email him twice, Does not want his students to get succeed.
Did I learn a lot about chemistry? Not really (took AP in highschool). Did I have an absolutely blast? YES! Love this dude, absolutely hilarious. Easy quizzes and tests. If you are a ME or ECE and don't need real chem take chem for engr with this dude (DON'T take normal chem you will regret it so much). This class is a joke how easy it is.
Really nice guy. Makes lectures less boring, always has something interesting to say.
By far one of my favorite professors at Temple. His style of teaching is very clear and he makes going to class something to look forward to. I learned a great deal of information in comparison to other courses I've taken. He loves to tell random, somewhat related stories too while teaching.
Look no further. You'll actually want to go to all his lectures. He's interesting, funny, relaxed, and one hell of a scientist. You'll leave with so much practical real-world chemistry knowledge that he seamlessly bakes into his lectures that you'll want to take him again.
Funny guy but lowkey terrible at teaching this class. He goes through worksheets in class (these questions show up on exams) but doesn't explain at all what he's doing or why, he just goes through the problems as if you already know the entire topic. I spent so much time outside of class watching videos and teaching myself the content. Hes cool tho
Nice and funny dude but i did not really learn chem in the class. Since it was chem4engineers he made it a lot easier than it should be, no homework (which is good but you get no self practice). 4 midterms with lowest one dropped, and 6 quizzes with 2 dropped. I honestly only understood the formulas which was enough to get by.
Lowkey terrible teacher. I think his rating is high because everyone else that teaches Chem II at Temple is truly way worse. Best option to take, but it's hard to pass. He also has a habit of calling out and being rude to random student throughout lecture which is super uncomfortable. Glad to be out of his reach!
Out of all the Chem 1032
Really enjoyed his class, made the lectures funny and genuinely intriguing. It's clear he is very passionate about quantum chemistry, inorganics, and often describes different Nobel Prize winners to make the knowledge learned in the class applicable. Best in the chem department, hands down.
Dr. Gilbert made lectures informative and enjoyable. He came prepared each lectures. He performed multiple demos throughout the course. All the notes were posted on Canvas for review and as a study guide. Practice exams were posted for review as well. The exams were all multiples choice; they were graded and posted the same day.
Yikes. He is funny, but I HATE his teaching style. I barely learned anything, had to teach it to myself with the homework videos. Don't use phones in lecture, I hear him call out kids for that a lot. Hard to do well, but I hear all chem professors here are like this or worse. Attendance is 100 points so do it. 4 mid terms, 1 final, 10 quizzes.
Very good professor. He was funny, came to lecture prepared, and clearly explained things. All of his tests are multiple choice, but if you come to class (he does take attendance that's worth 100 points later, so I advise you do) and do the practice exams, you'll do great. Just try not to pull your phone out in front of him.
honestly such a good guy. I was not going to pass after the final exam and he gave me what I needed to pass because I had a perfect attendance score in lecture, is so understanding and truthfully one of the nicest professors ever. He really cares about your success. As for classes he has great and engaging lectures. take Dr Gilbert for any gen chem
LOVE PROF GILBERT!! I struggled in chem (just not my strong suit) but he is still an amazing teacher. Very engaging, caring, and accommodating. If you are not strong in chem or math PLEASE take his course. He is willing to give extra credit and provide help. Attendance isn't mandatory but is counted and must be above 80% to get an A for partic.
One of the best professors I've had in the science department. He truly cares about students passing and offers plenty of extra credit opportunities. Sometimes curves the grades, which really helps. His lectures can be fun and engaging. I would definitely recommend taking his class!
Professor Gilbert is great! He is on top of the work, the assignments help in learning, and quizzes and tests directly reflect what you are learning. He even adds some extra credit questions and has grading policies that benefit the students.
