Prof G is the best! We had two midterms worth (40%) & final (60%). Mostly multiple choice, fill in the blank, & some short answer. Tests-lecture based, aren't easy but VERY reasonable. He is so helpful! He signed on to WebCT at Midnight to check if anyone had q's before an exam. What prof does that!? A dedicated one. STRONGLY recommend=A+ for Dr.G
The worst professor in UCSD. He is new with 7 PHD's but whats the point if you can not teach. you are basically on your own to learn the material since he is horrible at explaining it. his exams have nothing to do with his lectures and are hard and long. he might sound nice and easy in the begining but he is no help through out the quarter.
Doesn't curve; prevents regrades by "adding" points to EVERYBODY's score-which doesnt help at all. smart, nice guy but tests were hard & long. office hours/sxn helped a lil but too much detailed material. did show a concern for student-learning. there arent any other good teachers for mobio; youre out of luck. indian accent, but speaks good english
he doesn't curve. he made a class where you are supposed to get a good grade because you put in the work, difficult to get a good grade. cares about students up until the end when he basically doesn't care anymore. the tas weren't that great either

This professor may seem misleading because he is very clear in lecture but when it comes to the exams, he screws you over. What kind of professor raises the average so that more of his students can fail?? Those 3 extra points he gives you does NOTHING!!!! Take this professor if you are planning to work your butt off.
Seem like a new prof, but had to hear. He speaks fast and often eat his words. Also, he mumble too. His powerpoint are helpful for you to study from, but I only wish I could hear what he is saying 100% of the time. Maybe if he could speak a little bit slower and clearer. Otherwise, ok prof. You still have to study hard though.
Not a very solid lecturer, tends to mumble and talks pretty fast and has a really soft voice. Midterm was easy, final was pretty hard. Nice guy though, makes himself very accessible for questions and to help students.
Dr. G is the best biology professor that I have taken at UCSD. He is helpful, he cares about the students, and his midterms/finals are 100% fair. Dr. G is amazing and explains things very thoroughly. My only complaint is that some of the questions on the midterms/final are poorly phrased.

Very cool professor... the material is hard on its own so don't expect an easy class. But he's funny and explains things very well. READ TH TEXTBOOK if u dont understand the stuff from lectures. Overall it shouldn't be too hard.
He was an awesome professor! He was very clear in lecture and always on the webct discussion to help. His tests were TOTALLY fair, and you were well prepared if you went to section. Make sure you understand the examples he gives in lecture, they're a big help on the tests.
Pof good but do not understand we want grade. We can learn in graduette school or med school. Now we want grade at UCSD. Expects us to know everything but otherwise alright.
Jumps from topic to topic during lecture, his powerpoints are not helpful, expects you to know everything, boring lecturer, and his tests are not very representable of the material he teaches. Don't take him.
Genetics could be like hell if you don't have the right professor and have to digest everything on your own, and this professor is somebody could make you hate one of your most favorite subjects. Take him if you have no interest in the subject but smart enough to be in the top 1% of population because there's no curve.
He can be a bit funny, but he talks so fast, can't understand anything he says, and the book isn't any good. It contradicts everything he says but you miss most of what he says because can't talk. doesn't curve so make the midterm fair NOT easy, and the final is impossible. AVOID at all cost!
On one hand, he says he wants to help, and on the other hand he does things that seem to counter what he says. There're no curves on tests. He added "extra credit" points to everyone and told us it should be generous enough that no one should need regrades, and then he hides our MT key and practice MT before the finals. That's help?
Just to let you know a simple statistics: 36.5% of the students in our class got Ds and Fs, but not because Genetics is impossible to learn, but because you have to learn it with a useless professor and an unfair grading system. He always says that "if several people (which could be like 5 out of 300) could get A+, then you should be able to do it
No Comments
What a total jerk. He gave nearly half the class failing grades! No curves on tests, EXTREMELY hard tests..then he says "since some of you got A's, all of you should be able to do it". You can study your heart out and still not get an A. Don't take him...he should be fired!

I think he is definitely an ok professor.Try taking genetics with Nesbitt and you will know what I mean. As long as you read the chapters and do the problems at the end of the chapter atleast two times it is possible to get an A. Midterm was difficult but easy final, right out of the textbook.
WOW! DO NOT TAKE HIM IF YOU DON"T WANT TO FAIL. THERE IS NO CURVE IN THE CLASS. THERE'S A BIGGER PERCENTAGE OF THE PEOPLE GETTING Fs THAN As. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR FOR GENETICS AND YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
24% F's and 19% D's, enough said.
If you value your GPA at all, avoid him at all costs. When 41% of the class doesn't pass, that truly says something about the teaching, and grading. He is rude to students and even suggested during class that some people are incapable of learning bio. You will learn more from any MoBio book than you will from him. AVOID AT ALL COSTS
DONT EVER THINK ABOUT TAKING ANY CLASS WITH HIM!!! 43% of class got D's or F's. Not willing to curve the class. Exams are written poorly & super unfair grading. He expects you to write like an essay just to get the 10pts. Just because a few people can make the A's, he expects everyone can do it.
don't know what everyone else is talking about. easiest upper division bio class i've ever taken. rarely read book, never attended section. just go to lectures. midterm was a repeat of bild1 + 20% new material on statistical analysis. final was based on textbook. grading system still allows for a slight curve, but the easiest professor ever
He was not clear in his lectures. Jumps between chapters and subjects which makes it hard to follow. there was a lot of material poured onto us. His final was fair half of it you design your own exp and half was merely memorization, yet still hard. one midterm one final, so you either do well from the start or screwed there is not much of a curve.
This class is easy. Exam was STRAIGHT out of text with all the answers provided. If you are complaining you are probably an idiot. Go to another school.
This class seemed easy until I got my grade in it (he gave 1 MT and one cumulative final)...in my opinion, the final "curve" was pointless, 37% of the class got D's and F's (15% of the class did get A's though, but I have no idea how) Don't get me wrong, he's a really nice guy and the lectures were interesting, but watch out for his tests...
Lectures were somewhat clear. Much of the learning was done through TA and textbook. Although exam questions were fair, several were poorly written causing confusion and unfair loss of points (asking TA during exam did not help). Also tested on a topic vaguely covered in class. There was no curve and nearly half the class got D's and F's.
This prof has boring lectures that are difficult to follow because all of his slides contain figures from the books. His test consist of tricky T/F, tricky M.C. and short answer. He doesn't curve and he claims that adding like two extra credit points will help your score but it doesn't. Nearly half of the class received a D/F. 'Nuff said.
I went to all lectures, attended sections every week, read the book, studied ahead for the final and midterm and somehow I got a C+. I'm not stupid either. He is a good lecturer but he explains BASIC concepts and expects you to think conceptually=a lot of points. I think if you get an A in his class you're a biology god who knows what he wants.
Dude, my first C in college was his class last quarter. His tests were ridiculous, so many people got C's and I don't know how 15% got A's, did he falsify those statistics, lol. He was very confusing end of story, avoid him there are plenty of other professors.
Interesting class but the tests are ridiculously hard! The midterm and final focused on one small portion of what we learned during the whole quarter, so you waste your time studying for most of the general material. Don't count on the curve to save you either, it didn't help me one bit.
He is the worst professor at UCSD. His class will ruin your GPA. Do NOT take him ever!
Wow, what a bunch of idiots... you just have to rely on curve, don't you? Grow up, you're in college now. Dr. Ghiara is an awesome professor; he is really concerned with students' learning. He checks and answers questions on WebCT almost daily. Not a recommended class (and the rest of UD classes) if you are not willing to spend time on it.
He's not as bad as everyone on here is making him out to be.
this guy isn't bad. seriously. he tests on extremely general concepts (i.e. what's the probability of a woman giving birth to 3 girls in a row?). reading the book is a waste of time, especially for the midterm. go to EVERY lecture & take notes. i GUARANTEE it helps. people who did poorly probably never went to lecture or slept. just pay attention!
Ghiara rules!! He totally cares about his teaching. Go to his office hours and he will tell you everything you need to know. Read the book, go to sections. Do the work and it's not hard to get an A!
Dr. Ghiara is an amazing professor. His class was one of the most interesting I've taken at UCSD. It didn't even feel like I was going to class. He was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. My only regret is that I couldn't go to office hours because it conflicted with mys schedule.
This is an excellent class! One of the best classes I've taken at UCSD. This is his first time teaching this particular course at UCSD so I guess he was kinda of lenient on the tests. Grade based on midterm and final only. Doesn't curve, but if you attend all his lectures and take good notes you can easily get an A.
Ghiara is an excellent professor for human reprod, hands down! He is very knowledgeable about the subject, and his lectures are clear and helpful. The class was very enjoyable. Tests are lecture-based, and they are not very hard. Small class size makes the class feel comfortable. And yeah, he's hilarious during lectures, too!
Tests were difficult. 60% of the class got a C, D, or F. Only 40% got above a C!! Crazy hard. Wait to take an easier prof. and save your GPA.
When a professor says things like "If some of you can get A's, then everyone should be able to do it", you know it's bad news. A lot of people here say he isn't hard, seemingly coming to the rescue after all the bad ratings, but can 43% of the class really be lazy/dumb/a slacker? Are there other bio classes resembling his grades? None whatsoever.
He was a great professor! If you go to lecture and pay attention, you will be fine. I went to every lecture and took good notes, went to every section (VERY HELPFUL) and sort of did the reading and I got a semi easy A. His tests were straight from the lectures and I didn't think they were unfair at all.
He was a good prof. midterms were deceivingly easy, because the final was very hard. The material itself was interesting compare to other bio class, but he emphasizes more on the molecular aspects and not so much on the math stuff. I never went to section cuz my TA sucked. The problems he puts on webct helped a lot. Great prof overall, recommended.
probably the best bio class i've ever taken at ucsd..or class in general. dr. G is awesome. He knows the material, actually cares about it and wants you to understand it too. The class is a lot of material, but it's actually relevant and interesting if you get past the details and organize everything. mult. choice midterms with some free response.
Over 40% of 2007 BIMM100 failed. Stopped going to lecture b/c it was pointless. Some friends went to every lecture & failed. Pointlessness proven. He was good about answering Qs on WebCT though. Wish he would've bumped up my grade since did way better on final than on midterm. Less than 1% away from B+. Bitter still. Heard he got better though.
Dr. G is an amazing professor, I don't know how so many people on here can be so upset with him. He is very concerned with students succeeding in his class, and everyone I've talked to in my class this quarter is doing extremely well. He's a good guy, and good teacher.
Dr Ghiara is a great proffesor.who complain about him is totally just don't want to study and still want to get a good grade. Test is exactly what he is cover in class which reduce alot of cumbersome details in text book . take note, do the problem at the end of chapter and you will be fine
He's probably not that hardest, but his tests are tricky because the problems do not come from the book- Not sure where the problems come from. If you want an A you need to read the book because his lectures only cover the very basics. A lot of learning is on your own. Overall a good prof, but not an easy A because.
Excellent professor, Lectures are interesting, tests are straight forward, and he's just an all around nice guy.
He's a wonderful professor. Very clear during lecture. He changed his syllabus this quarter by making your grade dependent on 3 exams, none of which were cumulative, AND the final was just a simple "quiz." EXCELLENT! Take him.
Dr. G is an awesome professor. he is really helpful. his 3 tests are straight-foward and super super easy as long as you read the book. one bad thing is that he tends to spend too much time on one thing during lecture.
Great teacher for BILD1... exams were not bad at all... and the best part... NO FINAL! Super nice guy, and very very intelligent. Would be grateful to take a course with him in the future.
dr g is the man. his clases arent hard at all when he could expect you to know every little detail (but he doesnt.) take his class
He is truly a great profesor..made Genetics fun and easy. His focus is more on what you learn and he doesn't trick you on exams.
LIKE THE REST OF THE COMMENTS YOU'VE SEEN...this guy is MAGNIFICENT!! The material may be a little challenging for people with little or no bio background, but this man explains all, answers all, teaches all....ENOUGH SAID. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GUY.
He is amazing
I find his lectures extremely boring. He goes really really slow and honestly I would expect more of a challenge from an upper div biology class. In my opinion this class is too easy and makes me wonder what I really should be learning about.
This guy definitely changed. He used to have horrible classes where everyone failed, but now, he changed his test style. This class was way too easy for an upper division course. His lectures, nonetheless, are very detailed and helpful, and he's a nice guy as well. Recommended for an easy A.
AMAZING! He has changed his style and is now a great prof! Class was not a total cake walk but as close as your going to get. Highly recommended!
this guy is a g. he's extremely intelligent and explains things in lecture very well. test average is usually 90%, making curves pointless. easy class AND you learn stuff too! ghiara is also really nice. he even posted an encouragement message on webct the night before an exam. what more can you ask?
He's awesome! For the final quiz, he realized the TAs made a mistake, so he decided to just award everyone in the class the remaining 5% of the grade for free. He also a really nice person, very approachable during office hours.
Engaging lecturer with a genuine interest in teaching. Presents material clearly, encourages questions in class, and makes the occasional joke to keep us going every lecture. However, exams and material were unworthy of upper division status, and more along the lines of ninth grade biology.
Dr. G is a professor who is truly passionate about his students and the subjects he teach... He has made genetics and BILD 1 a great experience... hopefully BIMM 100 will be the same.... take him if you can
People bashing on this professor are stupid. They obviously took him because of his ratings on this website. So it is quite ironic that they bash him for his epic teaching. Dr. G is exactly what his name says. G.
This guy is an amazing lecturer. He likes to crack jokes which is really refreshing, it keeps the class interesting. The class is easier than I was expecting but I definitely learned a lot from him. He's really knowledgeable and makes the class interesting. Definitely take him if you can. One of the best.
Hes funny but lectures are pretty boring. Pretty easy class but every point counts cause each one you lose is a precentage off your grade.
The Giant Bee named Ghiara is an amazing doc! This professor really cares about his students. I mean, how many professors do you know that encourage students every 2AM before an exam to get some good night sleep and breakfast? He makes lectures clear and interesting with a touch of his human reproduction expertise. Highly recommended!
Probably the easiest bio class ever. Also probably the most useless. I didn't learn a single thing about repro that I didn't know from high school (and my HS was lame). Spends way to much time doing "reflection" and Q&A on 7th grade questions. Goes on 40min tangents on opinionated and pointless things. Overall very disappointed, but got an easy A.
Dr. G is seriously the best and funniest biology lecturer. His way of teaching is interaction and is always available during office hours. I never put anything up on ratemyprofessor, but Dr. G is the man. Some effort and you'll do fine! Enjoy this class! It's really fun!
Everyone says that he is a really easy professor, but I dont tink so, I took him and though it would be like everyone said but he actually got more difficult over time because he didnt want people to get easy A's any longer. His questions are much trickier than what people said. Before I would say to take him, but for now try another professor
He is quite possibly the best professor in the bio dept! Really smart, terrific lectures, cares deeply about students and great to talk to during office hours.
Found him to be an okay lecturer, goes on tangent alot since people asks random questions. Likeable guy, salsas really well. Interesting topic. Easy class. Study TA handouts and you're golden. Has to be one of the NO brainer classes at UCSD.
It comes down as simple as this: If you want a easy, no-brainer, fluffy A, take Ghiara. If you want to learn anything beyond middle school stuff, take someone else.
Ppl who can?t get at least a B+ in this class are generally those who don?t study well, but signed up for Ghiara b/c they heard that he was easy. Ghiara isn?t easy; it?s just that he tests what he teaches so learning effort is still needed. C'mon ppl, there?s no such thing as an easy A at UCSD. Otherwise, your degree wouldn?t worth a damn thing.
Easy easy easy genetics class. All exams are basic multiple choice questions, class average was really high so no curve really. Everything on his tests are from his lectures.
Amazing professor who actually wants his students to learn. One of few useful UCSD biology classes- information learned is retained-learning is the priority and not exams. There should be many more classes like this. It's under-appreciated because students too often strive for grades not knowledge. You will learn important information in this course
Very slow class, he over explains everything so its very hard to pay attention. I did not like the professor at all- boring and uninteresting. Tests are easy but they are only out of 45 so anything you get wrong drops your grade a lot- be careful. He uses THE WRONG BOOK which is SO annoying! all of his lectures are from the book we aren't using.
He didn't want to use the book that all the other genetics teachers voted to use, so as a result all of his lectures are from a different text and all over the place. u have to go copy the answers to problem sets before tests in the library. The books don't use the same terminology and aren't organized the same making it hard to study. It's stupid
NOT an easy A. Okay professor I guess, but not as good as they say he is, well for Genetics at least.
Good teacher overall. He is NOT as easy as everyone says though. His first midterm's free response was so awkwardly worded and nothing he showed us in class. Lectures are interesting and hes a good teacher but his tests aren't really a good coverage of what he taught in class. I studied what he said that would be on but he focused only on a portion
It seems from previous comments that his teaching is pretty inconsistent. When I took prof. Ghiara, I was very disappointed by his teaching. I took BILD 2 w/ berg the next quarter and realized that we covered most of what Ghiara covered in one lecture w/ berg. His lectures are slow, dull and useless. Exams were too easy.
fun class!
Awesome, passionate teacher who cares a lot about his students and obviously loves his job and teaching. Tests ok, just make sure to read every question carefully. Get there quick, because his office hours are packed!
Everyone says he is an easy/good professor...I found him to be the opposite. One Midterm that is long and tricky(even though he says he doesn't trick you on exams)...he wouldnt admit his mistake on an exam. Final is way to short on time. We spend about 3 hours on pointless presentations on genetics. We should have had that time for the Final!!!!!!!
His exams were consistent with what he taught in the lecture. Loved the way he explained things. Study and you will see good results.
He was pretty clear as to what he wanted you to know, and he wants you to understand the idea of processes rather than just minute details.
good amount of information, but nothing really hard. felt like he rushed in a lot of stuff right before tests, but if you study you will be fine. curve based on class performance. my problem was that his lecturing is very hard to understand. only writes random words you dont need to know on chalkboard. section is mandatory but it really helps.
Ok professor, but he screwed us over on the midterm last quarter!!! My TA didn't even expect him to give such a tricky exam. I studied so much and attended TAs office hours since he didn't have reasonable times (one hr a week after class seems a bit harsh!) I ended up dropping because I know I could've done better had he prepared us! No textbook!
Ghiara is a nice guy, but its NOT an easy class you need to attend every lecture so you don't miss his notes. Exams were not easy, needed to read outside of his lectures. One thing that bothered me is that he didn't use a textbook which made it difficult to know what to study. If you take this class know it is a commitment. Avg on exam was low 70s
He is one great professor. he is very clear and as long as you understand his lectures you will be fine. He is one of those amazing lecturers. to top it off he deeply cares about his students. if you get to know him durring office hours he'll take good care of you!!!
Best professor at UCSD. You need to take him before you graduate! He cares so much about his students and is VERY clear on what he wants you to know. Tests are fair and class is so interesting.
Ghiara is the best lower div bio prof at UCSD. He is a genius in the field, and is also blessed with humor and incredible teaching ability. Take as many classes with him as possible!!
Dr. G is an amazing lecturer and truly cares about his students. If you are a bio major, definitely try to take his human reproduction class before you graduate. He is very clear about what he expects on exams, and if you pay attention to lecture, text book reading is minimal.
Incredibly easy A makes the fact that Ghiara is a "meeeeeh" teacher somewhat more palatable. The lectures aren't confusing simply because the material itself is very straight forward. He didn't seem to care much about his students, but he demonstrates a lot of passion for his subject and teaching itself if that makes any sense.
Excellent professor! very passionate and made the class very enjoyable. You couldn't fall asleep in his classes if you wanted to. It was a bit dumbed down, and the tests were very very easy. He really cares about inspiring the next generation of scientists.
I was taught by Dr Ghiara last year. He was an incredibly passionate lecturer, committed to helping his students succeed! Definitely take his class as you can as he is very straightforward as to what he expects in exams. Great class and professor!!!
