Prof Baker is always there for help if you need it. Tests are very fair & if you study, you should be getting A's. She's really nice too :)
I personally didn't like this professor as she never clarified assignments her self she just got people from the Academic Learning Center to come do it for her. Her topics for this class were all so HORRIBLE and she was very unreasonable with her assignments ( having to use 10 sources for a 700 word lit. review is a little ridiculous).
Most annoying prof ive ever had! her assignments are completely stupid, her lecs are so pointless. takes one class to talk about one very specific thing and then the rest of class she just gets some other guy to teach us how to do the assignment. most useless class ever.
Great prof! I love her teaching approach and her videos - super helpful and informative. I've never seen a first year class where almost everyone attends prior to this class.
wonderful prof! very helpful and engaging. her way of teaching and lecturing made it very easy to understand the concepts. her tests were fair. I would deff recommend taking this class with her!
Great prof, helpful, interesting lectures and material. Provides videos on how to do better on tests, exams, study skills very beneficial for first year students. She is one of the prof's that cares about students succeeding and provides us with resources like tutorial test practice for the first test. Read the text, pay attention in class got A.
My favourite prof so far! Incredibly fair and straightforward. Keep up with the readings, understand the material, and you're bound to get a great grade!
She's an awesome prof, I wasn't interested in soc until I went to her classes. Now I'm majoring in crim! & She's super nice!
Favourite prof at utm. Soc of Education is generally a very easy course but her lecture slides and lectures make it even easier - very clear and exams are fair.
She is a very nice and clear teacher, but her tests are hard. SOC is a hit or miss course, either you get it or you don't. The essay is a pain to write.
Literally THE BEST prof at UTM! She is super nice and her lectures are very clear. She even posts additional youtube videos for unclear topics. Lectures are right from the book, so you don't need to worry much about reading. Go to class and enjoy her lectures!!!
Probably one of the best profs that i had during my first year. Great experience
Do attend Classes!! She is a habit which is called "ticket out the door" non-randomly. It is basically you have to prepare a Q-card, you will be asked a specific question about the lecture that she just finished. For example, you might be asked to give specific example for a theory just introduced in the lecture.
She is an amazing prof, her lectures are useful to attend, she explains topics clearly, provides plenty of opportunities to ask questions as well as a positive learning experience! I want to be a teacher one day, and I love her teaching style - this is a prof who gets it!!! Can't wait to have her again for Sociology of education in the fall!!

Love her! She's such a great prof and can't wait to take SOC of education next year with her! Her exams are fair, straightforward: multiple choice and short answers.
This class was among my favourites, the material is very interesting and Baker pulls in a lot of real-world examples to make it even more so. She is very clear with her expectations, the assignments have instructions and rubrics. However, the assignments are marked hard but she provides you with a lot of opportunities to get help for them.
Good prof, annoying as a person.
Baker is a such a sweet professor! The most clear-cut lectures and expectations too, perfect for a book-learner like me. The course itself is dry, but she puts interesting examples throughout, and I enjoyed her straightforward lecture style. The lectures and tests were very book based, so as long as you read, you'll do well.
Super freaking difficult, if you are expecting a bird course do not take this. She is passionate about it, but I feel as though I am just there because I have to be. She explains concepts that are blatantly obvious, and expects you to recall miniscule details. She answered any questions I had, and she seemed nice enough to be honest.
she is so passionate about what she does. Her lectures are long but you definitely won't be bored as she uses lots of contemporary examples to help you make connects. The assignments were marked a bit tough but she provides so many ways to prepare for them. Participation and class attendance are crucial as her tests are basically based on lectures
tests are hard, she made the mc questions complicated.
She does give slightly challenging tests but not difficult if you have studied thoroughly for it. Lenient in marking assignments if you have incorporated things well from her lectures and/ or the textbook, in your work. Attending her lectures is a Must for the tests. Be warned of some lengthy multiple choice questions in your tests and exam though!
Spoke well and was passionate about what she was teaching.
Tests are fair, straightforward and easy. Writing assignments are difficult not always clear feedback, no feedback on tests for mistakes. Gives many chances for participation marks.
Although the class material was not that interesting (SOC221) she managed to make the class more engaging and provided examples. There are quite a bit of assignments in this class (3 written and 2 tests) but all the smaller written assignments are working towards your final paper. Tutorials are only based on attendance so that's an easy 10%.
Worst Prof and it sucks because she teaches the mandatory SOCcourse. She's just another white woman who got where she is because she is white. She has the basic understanding of social issues and pretends her work on private schools is ground breaking - no one gives! She's a boring lecturer and relies heavily on textbooks. Use your on brain Baker.
Booring
THE best prof at UTM. I have been taking her classes for years. Initially, I was slightly intimidated but she is one of the most down to earth, approachable professors I have interacted with. She is extremely knowledgeable about her research and cares deeply about her students. Her lectures are NEVER boring and really interesting. Highly recommend!
The tests were easy. The essay was not, just make sure you talk to the prof to fully understand what she wants from you. Don't take her if you can't tolerate proletariat propaganda (xD RaWr Jk lol).
Prof Baker is an amazing prof. I've taken several courses with her and she is always willing to help and is very knowledgeable. The lectures are interesting and there is lots of participation and discussion. You can choose your assignments and pick the one you want to do. Overall a great prof. Doesn't hurt that she's also really cute.
10/10 would pine and take her class again
Not bad. Baker is very fluent and able to explain concepts really well. She tends to maintain a little bit of bias in what she says, but overall, a great professor. However, the tests recalled knowledge that focused on memorization rather than learning and the essay was marked unreasonably. Not bad, overall.
This course was so much fun. If you go to class, take good notes, and overall read the book you will be fine. if you use "mind tap" and do the practice quizes online with it you will pass the tests. The SOC final was really easy, it was 65 MC and two short answers that were only supposed to be up to 5 sentences. Shes a funny professor, I reccomend
Lectures are very important, her examples in the lectures are usually on the tests. Textbook is fairly on the test but not all single details.
Excellent prof that cares about her students. You have every opportunity to succeed as long as you put in the effort. If you do not study, you will do badly... but that will be on you. Her tests can be tricky, but if you read the textbook and make good notes you will do very well.
Really engaging and interesting class. You need to study to do well though, but if you go class and keep up with readings everything is fair.
If you show up and put in the effort you'll definitely do well
Take soc as a bird credit but don't take it during fall. Baker is a nice prof but her tests are very unfair. Do all your readings and read ahead for the lecture. Don't think of this course as an easy A as no courses in U of T are, you must put in work to get a 4.0.
You will use your textbook! Keep up with your readings and attend the lectures shes big on examples from lectures! Good solid prof dont slack and youre guranteed a good mark
A great professor that I'm glad to have again this year. Assigned readings are reasonable in length, with SOC100 (compared to other courses I took). Helped that she also gave good lectures as well. Even though I went through a rough period last year mentally and emotionally, I still managed to do fairly well and keep up. Very balanced and fair.
She jumps from topic to topic with no clear trajectory or thought. Grading is too hard as she does not explain course concepts well so a good grade is difficult to get. Course concepts are vague and difficult to pin-point, and she does not reference her slides so proper citation is made challenging so writing papers becomes a hit or miss.
Prof. Baker is my favourite prof! She is knowledgeable, really down to earth and engaging. She cares about her students a lot, knowing a lot of them by name and makes her assignments and tests fair. In our class, she would read your assignments and would sometimes even mention something insightful a student wrote in a paper to the whole class.
I wish every prof lectured as well as prof baker. her tests are straight forward (multiple choice/ a few short answer), along with her assignments. as long as you go to lecture you will do great.
Professor Baker is an amazing professor. Soc224 was a delight to take. She has a specific grading rubric. Follow it and you will flourish. Go see her TA's for help and office hours. See her too when she has office hours. If you work hard and do the reading you will flourish. Also she does in class "tickets" so you gotta be there for participation.
she doesn't really know what she is talking about. She brags about BS and puts random questions on some test questions. Trust me this is a bird course if you have a decent prof, something who actually spends time on quality material. If you get jayne baker don't take it. anyone else will give you a better time.
Don't bother taking her class. The lecture content is pretty interesting but her explanations of concepts are vague. She posts different slides online that don't contain a lot of information, so you have to attend the lectures. This is definitely NOT a bird course- all 3 of her tests are MC so if you don't do too well on them your GPA is screwed.
She was a great prof. the lectures are all interesting and she ives additional information during lectures that are 100% on tests and exams so its wise to show up. the only thing thats annoying is that she stop lecturing is she hears a whisper of talking which gets overdone. but overall this course is an easy A.
Professor Baker is very supportive and happy to hear and learn questions and criticism. She is a professor that is happy to work with students and excited about new theory or ways of learning.
Her lectures are very boring, she literally takes up 70% of her lecture with stuff mentioned in rge textbook. No I dont mean she discusses it, she literally reads definitions word by word and only talks about things that are very straight forward. I can't say everyone's experience will be the same as mine but this is my absolute honest opinion.
a tough test maker - won't pass if did not study for the test - no chance of guessing
Could rate her a 0 if I could.
hated the lectures
I found her lectures and the textbook readings extremely interesting. Test questions were taken from both lectures and the textbook. Reading the textbook made it a lot easier and she's always available to talk after class. I would not recommend this as a bird course and I could see how it may be difficult if you don't have an interest in sociology.
If you want to be infantilized then go ahead and take a course with Professor Baker, I mean this is kind of unsurprising since her rise to academic mediocrity was due to her studies of children. Passionate professor nonetheless but irritating at times. I suggest taking a xanax before attending her classes.
her tests will bring down ur mark big time and there are just 3 and 2 essays only
Im just going through with this course because I like the content. I dont, however like Prof. Bakers teaching style. She turned the course asynchronous and posts content based on modules instead of weekly material which I dont find effective at all, and the instructions she has posted for the essays are not effective enough to succeed and learn
I feel like her tests, at least online, are designed to make us do bad on it. She hasnt given us any actual support on how to prep for them, and the paper she expects us to write, instructions are VERY vague and markings by TAs are also confusing. Shes not teaching the content in a way that at least personally keeps me motivated to do good.
Professor Baker is an extremely qualified and thoughtful professional, and her competence is easy to spot even in an online course. I marked that attendance is not mandatory, but It was recorded lectures. If you failed to study, read the text and watch the lectures, you will not succeed. The grading is challenging, but fair.
The lectures are very easy to keep up with and they give out a lot of information. The readings are pretty long but they are usually discussed in lecture. Due to the online format, we were only allowed to see 1q at a time on tests, which was frustrating for short answer questions. She is also a bit hard to approach over email.
Dont take this class if you absolutely dont have to. very selfish and inconsiderate condescending professor.
Just no, wayyyy to much readings, tests are hard and the timing for the test are not nice, srsly 43 min to do 28 MCQ and 1 long answer question? you have like 1-2 min to do each question and it takes me 2 min to understand what the question is asking. But the things u learn are nice. Prof just needs to give less readings and extra time.
Do not take this class. Worst class ever. The profs are so bad, and test are the worst. Expect you to memorize every thing form the long chapters. The test questions take long to understand and less time is given to answer. Was going to major in sociology but after taking this class, not at all!
multiple-choice questions in the online textbook you get graded for so you need the textbook. there was no final exam so the tests were very highly important, baker didn't give a lot of time between tests and also In the test. she is hard to get a hold of as well. do not take this class if you don't have to!
Baker does selfish things in class such as timing quizzes and locking each question as you answer. at least let us move on and go back to each question if we need to or if we remember something but its like her job was to specifically make online courses hard for us.. if we were in classes, we'd be able to see all our questions & correct if needed
lectures were prerecorded and all you had to do to earn marks was do (non cumulative) tests and two rather simple homework assignments. it's very easy to get a good mark in this class as long as you do your readings on time; the content was easy to understand and you didn't need to memorize, just understand the concepts well.
Prof Baker is the BEST. I took multiple classes with her (including SOC100) and she is the reason I fell in love with Sociology. Honestly unsure why she has a lower rating. Lectures are interactive and enjoyable, readings are great and the classes are interesting. She is also very kind and approachable. 110% recommend!
Overall an interesting course on education. She is passionate about the topic. The participation component requires a lot of effort for a small percentage of the grade.
Prof Baker is very professional and literally cool..also kind of hard to describe. Her impact in SOC100 is eclipsed by Prof Innocente because she is less charismatic and extroverted. Nonetheless her lectures are interesting but kind of forgettable, precisely because of the dual-professor nature of SOC100. Don't be afraid of asking her questions!
(SOC100 Fall 2022) Professor Baker's course depended heavily on the textbook she co-wrote. You must read and answer all questions in this textbook which has very long chapters. There are no tests or essays, just this book. I didn't need to attend the lectures because EVERYTHING revolved around the textbook.
tbh, She was very rude. Test questions were ridiculous and far from the content. It's almost the end of the semester and none of the assignments were marked yet? She was not accommodating at all. Nobody from the course could receive an extension while she just takes her time to mark our assignments if you can, do not take her, there're better profs
This class is supposed to be a bird class but it is not. Requires you to do so much textbook reading that is so agonizing and long. The lectures are useless as they don't contain half the information that the textbook has and so many questions per chapter. On top of that, the software is so expensive. The amount of work for this class is too much.
The professor's lecture is reading ppt, no fun. Forcing you to buy a $70 textbook for nothing but a 10% grade on the assignment. The professor deliberately made the questions difficult, and the two sections were far from the requirements of the school. Don't take this class unless you want to waste a semester studying hard and end up with a D.
A lot of UTM students flame this course and the profs (Baker and Innocente) because it is very textbook reliant and the lectures are honestly just recaps of the chapters with some extra info (so still go). People who say the tests are confusing and poorly worded just do not take notes and complain after. Prof Baker is super kind and clear.
She give great feedbacks on any questions and is really chill during lectures.
Professor Baker was great in SOC100. She's interesting, funny, and expands on the ideas of students critically. The textbook written by her and Innocente is easy to read, just long. But once you have it down, you'll do great on the tests. Unlike her co-prof, she never made jokes in poor taste, and managed the class when people were loud or rude.
hope your good with interactive text and constant testing. they make up for having no final by having a test every two weeks. this is frustrating but (usually) executed well, sometimes material they say not to study does still appear on tests. baker specifically was just never friendly with me when i approached her, not a fan.
Professor Barker made the lectures so interesting and fun! She made me realize how much I love Sociology!! One of my favourite profs for sure
Professor Baker was the best part of SOC100
great professor , funny , passionate and caring
Its not a bird course anymore
Honestly, she's not a bad prof. For sure passionate and makes class interesting, but the course load is really heavy. It requires a lottttt of reading, and the tests are all based on the textbook. If you're thinking of taking this as a bird course or an elective, don't! The TAs are also a hit or a miss.
For those commenting that soc100 is supposed to be a bird course: it is NOT. This is coming from someone who has taken a spec in crim. Soc100 is meant to be gruelling to weed out students not meant for the program, and to teach first years the demands of university learning. Don't take a course because you want an easy way out, do the work.
She is great and so are her lectures. shes pretty clear with the content and doesnt stray off topic. If you dont do the work or study then you obviously wont like the course, do with that what you will
im scared to step foot in her vicinity again. dont. let. the. smiling. face. fool. you...
She's great, doesn't deviate from the content, and is nice during office hours.
Professor Baker is a competent lecturer, and does make an effort to be engaging with students and course content. That said, the way that this course was outlined and conducted was awful. You are not able to go back over questions on tests, and the slideshow content provided online is not the same as the ones presented in lectures. Not recommended.
