Small class but he helps if you dont understand something. Easy grader but his explanations are not clear at all which confuses many students. If you are a non greek(like one girl in my class) he takes it easy on you and helps you through it.
definitely would have prefered not to take this class
Is extremely knowledgeable and a dedicated professor. He has impressive credentials and is a seasoned professor. He gives excruciatingly long and tedious weekly study questions, but these will help you a great deal in serving as a comprehensive study guid
The man is psycho! he gives a ridiculous amount of work and his midterm! OMG! sooo much..dont take his class!
This guys knows everything about everything! A lot of work. You need to memorize artwork. I loves to call on random people in class, so don't sleep! Don't plan on slacking in this class.
Good teacher, he really helps you to understand the stuff. Homework sheets due every class, but they're pretty easy and they & his study sheets really help with the tests. Be prepared for a corny sense of humor though, he laughs at his own jokes.
Gives too many assignments (internet, readings, papers, tests). Somewhat ambiguous with questions (open to interpretation), however, he is always precise in his answere. Tests are too long. Extremely knowledgable and helpful.
assumes that people know things, doesn't field questions well, tests are long, likes things just so, hard to talk to
he is very weird and i don't recommend him
Tests way too long, but he knows his stuff. I would recommend him
oh my GOd don't ever take his class unless you love work its the hardest class i've every taken he's corny and that man can talk untill the cows come home 2 times was to much work. he lives for history and thinks you should to.WAY TO MUCH WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!
This man knows a lot about his field. He gives a great deal of information. When you have finished this class, you will definitely know more than when you started! Be prepared to read and discuss the material. He has an adult sense of humor.
He knows his stuff! Your grade is a direct result of how much you effort put into the class. If you don't understand something, ask! Definitely worth taking this professor.
The class was way too much work. He grades really easy on tests though, BS and you're good. His lectures are boring, and he is very corny. He has dittos due at the beginning and end of class, so make a friend to copy for you. Not fun to ask for help.
Great Prof. Worthwhile to take his class, but he gives a lot of material. This man knows tons of stuff and thinks you should too. Watch out for the corny jokes.
Hooray for Prof. Alvarez! Finally a real college course in this rinky-dink backwater dump. I am so glad we got to read The Odyssey and Ulysses with an expert, and the characters seem so real.
i took his summer class, and he gives alot of work, but if you do em, you'll be fine. hw every day and in-class assignment everyday plus supplementary work online
Have taken this professor over 3 times. Gotten frustrated many times but it all pays off. He's a great teacher and is very passionate about what he is teaching. Always great for a conversation outside of class. Gives a lot of work but it is worth it
Too much information; needs better organization.
Don't do it. Isn't there somebody else who is willing to teach Greek? He seems to want you to succeed, but is so disorganized and unprepared it hurts.
Bizarre acting and unorganized. Gives a tremendous amount of work and has intelligible handwriting. However, he is extremely knowledgeable and a fair grader. It's a riot watching him continually trip over the electrical cord for the overhead projector.
At first it was rough adjusting to him teaching style. He lectures a lot but you get used to him. Its a good class and hes a very knowledgeable teacher always willing to help.
Lectures FOR A LONG TIME and there's always an assignment due. But the class is manageable. Just do the work and you should be fine. Gives a lot of extra credit too.
Alvares is a great Ancient Greek teacher. He articulates the lessons very well and is very concerned with the interest of the students. He makes sure you learn,so its not like he lets you slack off, which you shouldnt, he wants you to learn. As long as you do the assignments and study its an easy class
Totally eccentric, but this is without a doubt the most brilliant man on the face of the Earth. I stand in awe. 'Nuff said.
GREAT CLASS!!! One of my favorites at MSU...I suggest to take Dr. Alvares' class only if you are very interested because he is not easy, but still awesome!!!
Big on lectures which can sometimes be boring, but knowledgable on subjects he's teaching. Almost always have questions due, but gives extra credit, asks you questions in class so make sure you read. 3-4 tests, mid-term, final, and paper, gives you study guides for everything, and helpful.
ok, but boring
Too much work! Stay away.
HORRIBLE teacher. He is very smart but he cant teach for his life. The whole time I was completely confused. He cannot help at all and he is just horrible. I hated going to the class. CAN NOT TEACH AT ALLL!!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Disorganized. Off in his own little world. Ok these are just bad teaching, but he is a little strange too. So please, be careful. Bring a friend to look out for you.
he tries to be funny, loves the subject matter but expects a lot. tons of reading a few papers and four tests-none are easy. cant miss a class or you'll fall behind, only take if you are seriously interested in subject and have time to do a lot of work, I got an A but I worked for it
He expects a lot from you, but I found his very knowledgeable about his subject area. He does try to be funny and sometimes it works...sometimes not. I would take him again if I had to do it all over again. If you have this class...organize study groups
okie lhe loves his subject but should realize that alot of us are there to finish a Gen-ed requirement. Not to be blunt but Coooooome On 6 hours of reading after each session. Too much work too too much. However, the work was easy and he's not a tough grader.
This guy is very passoniate about the material he teaches. He gives lots of assignments, but a majority of it is pretty easy. His tests are pretty straight forward and come from the lecture. If your not into doing work, or attending class, you won't do good in his class. Lots of work, but definately tolerable.
tough teacher, tests all the time, this class is crazy.
Troy & the Trojan war was a very boring class to take at 830am. Prof. was nice & knowlegeable about the subject. Lots to read, but most is on sparknotes & works just as well as the books. Homework is easy, and the same homework questions are used for the tests. Id reccomend it, if you need to take a GNHU.
Its hard to fail his class. Gives you a lot of homework, but its easy. Fair grader. His test comes from his lecture and homework
I honestly liked this class a lot. -Lots- of homework-, but I think it really helps you understand the subject well. He is extremely passionate about this subject and is very knowledgable. Tests arnt really hard, mostly come from homework and lectures, and he is an easy grader. I definitaly recommend this professor.
Good guy. He's really passionate about what he teaches and is really animated. There is A LOT of work though, so if you aren't up for a challenge don't take him. I learned a lot from his class, but I worked really hard. I would recommend him to people who really want to learn.
prof is very knowledgeable and helpful. gives A LOT of work... but a lot of extra credit as well. he is kind of creepy, but I dont think he means to be. overall a good good teacher. you will come out of his class with a lot of knowledge and i recommend taking his class.
very knowledgeable man kind of cooky and makes jokes that only he really finds funny but just laugh with him anyway. lots of work its all found in the book.He also calls on you alot in class so be prepared also turn ur cell phones off i've seen him go crazy in my class one day..pretty bad. If you do the work easy A.
Very intense class. Professor assigns A LOT of homework, everyday in fact. A LOT of extra credit. Most of the homework is busywork, not much of the info sticks. Very weird teacher, assumes everyone is a Classics expert like himself. Asks questions assuming students know the bible front to back. Fell asleep in class a lot, just do the homework.
weird guy. he really does try to get you interested, but this class was sooooo boring. lots and lots of homework, eight pages worth of short answer questions every week...it took me like two hours. the study guides for his tests really do nothing and the exams are hard...really tough prof
Pretty hard class. Lots of info. You really need to attend class and do the homework do get an A. Homwork every week that doesn't take to long. MIdterm, FInal and a paper.
You'll fall asleep at least 2 times in one session. *IF you procrastinate, You'll die from all the homework. Easy B HARD A. He makes you participate. Don't say anything stupid cas he'll make fun of you. All the tests and midterm were take home exams. Final=easy, just do the review packet. Take if you're interested in mythology. I loved this class.
Dr. Alvares' class material is advanced yet interesting. He's hilarious, occasionally breaking out into song - loves telling slightly stupid jokes. Homework about once a week, it's a long packet but when you have the tests you'll get an easy A. If you're looking to avoid homework, don't go to college. VERY easy grader though. 3 tests & final.
Worst proffesor ever
He's goofy, overly excited about his field, but his enthusiasm made the class more interesting for me and he's a sweet guy and tries to make class funny. Gives homework packets each week, just read the books (or read Sparknotes), do the HWs, make the BB posts, be prepared to talk in class, and study for the quizzes. Ex-credit is offered too!
Very nice and caring professor, however the workload is quite ridiculous. He took his hybrid course way to seriously and assigned atleast 3 - 40 question assignments a week. Always answers emails, and always willing to help. If this class is a requirement take his regular class and you will learn alot (avoid hybrid course) !
This is definitely a class to consider taking. I am taking the online, winter session. The video lectures are very helpful-Just be sure to take good notes, and you should be able to do well on homework and tests. Plus, each assignment offers extra credit, too!
Nice guy. Easy class. Assigns a lot of stuff, but that's cuz he wants everyone to get an A. I missed 4-5 assignments, saw him regularly, and attended class. Got an A.
Do not take this professor! He's a nice guy, with a great enthusiasm for the course, but gives the most absurd amount of work- readings, graded in-class assignments, videos, powerpoints, homework... ridiculous. For a gen ed, this class is definitely not worth it.
way too much work for a gened class, not clear on assignments and due dates, the course does not prepare you for the final paper at all.
He gives so much work it isnt even funny... i never thought it was possible for someone to assign so much work. we got around 35 homework online in a semester and each homework is 30+ questions long. i mean it wouldnt be hard if it was a couple of homework but damn i'm still trying to complete homework and semester ended today. -..........-
Too much information to digest. Style of teaching online and in class is not effective...Too much homework, could not retain most of the info. In Class he was Great, excellent explainations and teaching...
This guy is ridiculous in the amount of work he assigned in a 3 week course - the expectations and the work he gave were not realistic - people do work full time and i dont think he took that into consideration which was extremely frustrating!
Really nice guy, but the amount of work he gives online is crazy!!! but he is an easy grader, 2 test in class, overall easy, if you're good at taking quizzes online, then take this professor, and keep in mind that google won't help to answer the quizzes.
This class is kind of ridiculous. You need to attend because he takes attendance by collecting in-class assignments at the end of class, but you really don't even need to be there. WAY too many online homework quizzes and unnecessary work all throughout the semester. Too much work for gen-ed class. Nice guy, though.
this teacher is ridiculous, the amount of work given for this course is absurd. Do not take this class, trust me. it is boring, he is not helpful and nothing is fun about this class. This class will make ur whole semester so much more complicated because of the amount of useless hw he makes you do. Its really bad. Do urself a favor and avoid it
Very helpful professor who just wants to see you graduate. Plenty of work to keep you busy, online postings, readings, TONS of homeworks, a few papers and the final paper with a video to go with it. Mid term was based on the readings. He is a funny guy and is easy to talk to, like I said, he is there to help. Don't let the workload scare you.
I had Professor Alvares for an online class. Cool dude! You have to keep up with all the work but it wasn't impossible. If you fall behind you can catch up. I recommend him because he does care about you as a student even though you don't see him face to face.
This is a 100 level gened class. Taken directly from the syllabus, he expects you to study 30-40 hours a week plus homework. That is the hours of a full time job. For a freshman level gened class. Absolutely ridiculous. The course material is confusing and non intuitive as well. The only good part is the tests are lenient.
He gives so much unnecessary work. On his syllabus says 'you need 30-40 hrs to study EACH week'. That's ridiculous. He thinks you have no life or other classes but his. You get 30-35 online hw and each hw is made up of 35-45 questions. You need to read and watch videos every week also. It's way too much work for a gen ed class.
The workload is ridiculous. I cannot understand how he expects the students to complete so many assignments in so little time. The work is very extensive and elaborate. Only bright side is that he is an easy grader. Avoid this professor at all costs if you know what's good for you!
Professor Alvares, online Summer course is incredible intense, keep up with the reading, communicate with him and you will do just fine. He is a very easy grader, and accommodating, gets back to you in a reasonable time. It was my first online course and I would take another online course with him if I can. Will work with you if you have trouble.
This guy gives a ridiculous amount of work. It is really not necessary for him to assign the amount of work he does, but if you do the homework you will pass. He is a very easy grader.
Very nice guy, hilarious, but the work load is insane for a gen ed class. Easy grader but get ready to make this your heaviest work load class. Quizzes everyday, over 30 homework assignments with majority having over 40 questions. Good luck reading his course assignments in canvas. I liked him as a person though.
Work load is ABSURD. Take this class if you plan on having A LOT of free time to dedicate to this class. Easy A if you do all of the work, but it's SO MUCH HOMEWORK. Be prepared to watch video slideshows he narrates himself; he even burps in one of them. AVOID THIS CLASS!!!
Bought all txtbooks needed, bother reading them-Too much info to analyze so do yourself a favor and DROP. Its an online+lecture heavy class & after each lecture, theres a quiz. Pay attention to every word he says during lectures; theyll help answer quiz questions. Gives SO much online HW (quizzes) no due date but dont procrastinate-At least guess!
-Online/Lecture class: Each HW is like a quiz w/T-F questionstime consuming. Don't procrastinate. The HW has videos related to each one, so it'll give you answers per quiz ques. so pay attention -Canvas assignmentsDisorganized -After lecture, you get a quiz but if you listen and write everything down/ask him ques. you'll be fine -PASS DO THE HW
With online courses it's crucial for your syllabus as well as assignments to be clear, and easy to understand. His slides and syllabus are written haphazardly. His canvas website is completely disorganized, and frankly confusing to figure out what readings to do. I wouldn't recommend this professor.
This professor is incredibly passionate about the humanities and ancient civilizations, and seems to be a bit out there most of the time. Be ready for roughly 20+ homework assignments that will take you about an hour to complete due at the end of the semester. If you don't have a passion for humanities a recommend switching professors.
He knows a lot about humanities, but he gives an insane amount of work. 30 homework assignments, with 60 questions each. It takes more than an hour to do one homework assignment. He makes lots of mistakes and when the class tells him about it, he says we are wrong, even when we have proof. Save yourself the trouble and don't take this class!
This is probably the worst class I have ever taken. The modules are so unorganized and there is so structure in the class. Professor doesn't take the time to answer questions from students. Extremely demanding (minimum of 30 assignments with 30 questions each), and prof. claims this class is successful in the past with the same assignments.
Horrible, lots of work, his lectures make no sense. Do not take him if you like to have a high GPA.
Please for the love of God, unless this is your only option, please do not take this professor. He is the worst. His class structures online aren't structured... not sure how he's allowed to teach online in the first place. Assignments get posted without notice and take 5 hours to complete. Totally disorganized. AVOID
THE WORST DO NOT TAKE!!!! Extremely disorganized BUT EXPECTS you to put in a ridiculous amount of work to hold you to 'higher standards' when his own teaching abilities are anything but. I took this course so I didn't have to waste that much money on textbooks for the other GNHU courses... I wish I did not worth the trouble with him.
The worst class I've ever taken. He gives way too much work for no reason!! He's disorganized and his lectures are boring.
Nothing you do in the class matters, it's a "flipped classroom" so its mostly online based. He never makes any sense, all of his notes are unclear and have spelling and grammatical errors. When challenged he gives the whole "well i'm a professor so shut up" shtick. He's terrible and I wish I had dropped the class when I had the chance.
I like to think I'm a very good student who always does the work and tries hard. Ive never failed a class before, but I failed his class. He gives WAY too much work and does not consider the fact that students have other classes to balance.. I became so overwhelmed I accepted failing. I never write poor rates, but do not take him!
To be quite honest Ive never complained about a professor in my life but he is the worst when it comes to assignments, the work load is ridiculous and you have no way of balancing other classes. He requires to much that a lot of student are unable to meet. Its a class that setting you up for failure
He is a nice guy, is a shame I cannot give him a good review. The homework amount is overwhelming and it is based on his videos; but the problem lies on the fact that, his online content is very disorganized to say the least. You have to constantly email him, to let him know a homework link is broken or to clarify an inquiry. Do not take him.
He actually wasn't that bad! He was super kind and gave me extra days to finish my homework. I took this as an online summer course though, so everything in a semester was pushed into 4 weeks (very tedious). He gives way too many assignments, but as along as you stay on top of scheduling, you'll be fine. I learned a lot too in those 4 weeks!
incredibly disorganized and confusing. syllabus only lists textbook pages, doesn't list any required supplemental material(which there's a lot of) or assignments. Responds quickly but responses are not helpful. Homework is plentiful and tedious. Typos in everything. Unclear questions in assignments. He gets one point for lots of EC opportunities.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! He gives 30 quizzes that are "homework assignments" and each has 40-50 questions. Before you take the quizzes, you have to watch 4-5 of his 25 minute lecture videos. The entire process of doing homework takes 4-5 hours. Ridiculous amount of work. I thought it would be a relaxing online class, but NOPE.
The work load is so much. Do not take this class.
If you have a Gen-Ed you have to knock off your list, pick this guy. Nice guy who basically tells you all the homework for that section and gives you all the way until the test (usually a month) to do all of the homework. I don't watch the lectures and have a 100.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! HE WILL LITERALLY MAKE YOUR LIFE MISERABLE
PLEASE DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID AND NOT LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS. I DONT THINK I HAVE EVER DONE THIS MUCH WORK IN ALL MY YEARS OF BEING A STUDENT. SAVE YOURSELF THE STRESS INDUCED HAIR LOSS FROM THE INHUMANE AMOUNT OF WORK THIS PROFESSOR GIVES OUT. so so so glad to get this class over so I never have to go through this torture again. <333
If I could have given this course and professor a 0 I would have. The amount of work was quite literally insane for this course. It blows my mind that a professor even thinks this is even acceptable for a gen-ed. Very disorganized and ended up hurting the students. Save yourself the semester of struggle and do not take this professor's class.
The workload required for this course is unbelievable for a Gen Ed course. No due dates for homework, 13 due before midterm & 18 more due by end of semester, each homework is 25-30+ questions takes hours to do. Only good thing about the course was that you are only required to go once every three weeks. Would not recommend this course to anyone.
I thought he was an ok guy cause hes entertaining but man it was a lot of work. the homeworks arent super hard but theyre very time consuming. the good thing is he drops your lowest 14 homeworks but you still gotta do all 29 of em plus everything else. its a doable class but I wouldnt recommend it if you can avoid taking it.
To start off, this class was originally every Monday but Jean Alvares split it up into 3 groups making it once every 3 weeks. As a student who relies on in person learning this made the class very difficult. 4 Essays. Tons of homework on things that we never talked about. The final project is where you have to ZOOM Chinese students. Drop this class
If you have a social life, work, and you're a full-time student, say goodbye to all that because this class takes time! It was a rough experience, there's a plethora of homework that you basically teach yourself and after all, there will be papers asking for a lot! I took Mythology because I know of its history but after this class, whew..
I've been a student for four years now, been through nursing school, yet I've never had a class with THIS much work. A nice guy, but gives an insane amount of work and is unorganized. You will spend HOURS on one homework (there are 30), papers aren't terrible but the final was absolutely brutal. It is NOT worth it, take someone else.
This professor is not the best at technology yet relies on it for most of the class. All the homeworks are online and are very tedious. Beware of taking him as this course will be filled with tons of work and I was lucky I had the time to do all of his homework assignments. He also has you show up to class for group work and do the COIL method.
PLEASE, for the love of god, don't take this professor. He gives way too much homework and the stuff he wants you to do the assignments on doesn't even make sense. It's like you're learning about an alien language. I just hope god blesses him and put him on the right path. Please I'm telling you listen and don't take him, if you do, you'll regret.
DO NOT take this class for a gen ed, it is ridiculous. The professor doesn't even know how to work Canvas properly, makes the homework so confusing, and makes you buy 3 textbooks. Every homework is based on reading 20-30 pages of a reading or the textbook, and also watching a 30-minute video. Will NEVER take this professor again!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS TRUST ME YOU WILL REGRET IT. He assigns so much homework and is unorganized so it can get really confusing. When there is in person class, all we do is answer questions on a worksheet.. He does give you extra credit opportunities! (usually worth one homework).
so much outside work, incredibly confusing professor, do not take
This professor assigned a ridiculous amount of work. There had to at least be like 40/50 assignments, then on top of that there barely any in person classes. The workload is insane and caused me so much stress this semester. I wouldn't recommend this class to my worst enemy.
This class and professor was absolutely awful! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS or this PROFESSOR! The class makes no sense, and he spent half the class rambling about unrelated topics to what was assigned in the homework. Take a different course it will save you!
Boy oh boy.. this class was beyond stressful. He's a great guy honestly, but he assigns wayyyy too much work on top of the work that we get when we're in person. Half of the semester is in person, while the other half is online. The online half is COIL where he makes us talk to students in China. Overall I don't really recommend this class.
I do not recommend him! He assigns way too much work that can become very time-consuming. Every assignment had typos which made it hard to understand him.
Terrible professor DO NOT TAKE HIM. Gave unreasonable amount of work. Unrealistic work load. Terrible teacher only wants to take classes to get paid. Doesnt care for students.
This class has a heavy workload and can get quite confusing, but using resources like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook can help manage it. Overall, a challenging but manageable class if you stay organized.
