Hated this class. The only thing I give him credit for is being funny. Other than that, he doesn't explain things well at all. I was always lost. His take home exams are HARD and not graded fairly at all. It was not at all an intro level course.
Be pwepawed to learn on a lot weligion and love-making. Not the best of pwofs but if you have a good sense of humor, you will laugh a lot!
course was so boring that we took to betting on what he would wear and how many times he would mention sexual relations with his wife. I had friends in other soc 1501 classes and they loved it, and didn't learn just what was in the book that he wrote.
He's really a good teacher and a good person too. HE really cares about his students. He's one the teachers that has the best general culture. I will recommend you the classes he teaches.
Horrible, he doesn't like students that question him, he favors students that just shut up and take it all in. I would expect a lot better from a prof who has been teaching for 20+ years.
Very good prof who is willing to try new technologies in his work. Despite having taught for over 20 years, he is still excited to teach!
Verrry enthusiastic and relaxed prof- what more would you expect, he tells you to kick back and relax on the first day of class. Knows his stuff and communicates important notes efficiently. Full of life and makes every class a riot. Strongly recommend!

I am still learning stuff from what he taugh. He gave us not only awnser to question but keys for the doors of knowledge. I see people in more advence soc. likes him more. I have challenged him in class and have been intertained by him. Does not plan one class a the time, just plans his year and goes over a lot of stuff. Never learned that much!
Gets the msaage accross to you in the end. Sometimes hte pure dictation was not too fun, but at least you learnt a lot and you always knew exactly what he wanted. I could easily reccomend this prof. He even keeps you motivated through night courses
REally helpful, comprehensive with life's unexpected events. Teaching method is not like everyone else, seems useless at first but is really effective. Great teacher

Hilarious guy, very nice, but he speaks really fast, taking notes is hard. Take homes like define sociology are deceptively tough. Talks a lot about his personal life despite constantly saying he never talks about his personal life. His writings on Haiti's liberation are very interesting.

2nd worst prof at UofO. Never defines any concept, makes ****/**** comments in class (ask him what is a woman) forces you to buy a coursepack 50$ (with his articles) and his book (not available in bookstores, only in his office 25$ ?!?). Repeats 75% of his class materials (C = c + v + delta x(s)) from subject to subject. Avoid him!
People stress unnecessarily over this course. He basically teaches the same concepts in every course and adapts them to the course tile. He's hilarious and an easy marker.
He is a very good teacher, although he tends to take a lot of time in advancing with the lessons. He interacts with students, making it more interresting and is quite funny. He is very clear and gives plenty of examples to make sure students understand. Only, technology is not his biggest strenght...

Why is he teaching?
THE most useless class I have taken. Avoid is possible! Prof uses his own book as a textbook. However he is a terrible writer which makes the class very stressful... Sentences are not properly formulated and often run on endlessly. One sentence had 145 words, 5 sets of quotation marks, 18 comas, 2 dashes and 8 parentheses. Frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His dictation style method of teaching is extremely frustrating and pointless.
Used his own textbook for the class - which wasn't available from his publisher until week 9 of a 12 week semester. In the mean time, he dictated to us is unfinished manuscript. So we ended up writing ourselves a part of something we paid for anyways. Unpleasant.
If you understand what's going on in his textbook: you're golden, because his class is just a repetition of his own book. Don't ask about his wife and pretend like you know what's going on and you're set. Also: might as well cut class time down to 45 minutes because that's usually all he dedicates to actually "teaching" in any given lecture.

Possibly the worst prof at the University of Ottawa. Completly outdated with his opinions. Everyone gets a B+ regardless of understanding of sociology as well as work ethic. Has coincidently picked the worst TA's available (unsurprising). Scams you into buying his book for 40 cash which he throws in a garbage bag. Don't know how he was published?
The University of Ottawa will be improved when Samedy is fired or when he retires. He undermines the integrity of the University and everything it represents. His class is counterproductive in acquiring any knowledge and his teachings are opinion-laden. The textbook he wrote is not worth the paper it is printed on. Avoid at all costs!
Samedy will force the microphone into your face, especially if you sit at the back. Samedy's "teaching" style consists of him asking questions to himself and then answering them. You are not allowed to have your own opinion, you are wrong if you disagree. I read bad reviews of him and thought, whatever I'll take this course. Seriously, drop it.
His teaching methods aren?t what you see everyday but if you open your mind you can learn a lot from this man. He gets everyone involved which, in my opinion, is nice and also very entertaining. He gave an easy midterm & a take home/open book final exam. Anyone looking for a laugh, an easy grade or a knowledgeable teacher should look him up
Though his classes were interesting at times he tends to go off on tangents making it hard to follow. During his class I felt I learnt nothing but in retrospect his course has proved marginally useful. He calls on students and often humilitates you if you anwser the question wrong. I feel that he is a professor better suited to teaching upper years
gives notes for about half an hour and spends the rest of the time talking about totally unrelated things.. is really outdated (his book cites sources from 30 yrs ago!!!!) and old-fashioned. doesn't like to use technology. has difficulty explaining key concepts.
If you are considering taking M. Samedy's class, DON'T! He is a horrendous teacher. His lessons are useless, and you will learn nothing. When speaking, he always wanders off on pointless tangents and makes revolting sexual jokes. He is difficult to understand; as an Immersion student, he made no effort to support us and ridiculed questions. Awful!
Mr. Samedy is a terrible teacher. He is self absorbed and teaches only from his own books. He doesn't provide any help whatsoever. He makes innapropriate, rude and many sexual comments. he singles out students. His course is not designed for success. Avoid this course. as a french immersion student he was not helpful at all.
Le cours le plus inutile et mal structuré que j'ai pris. On ne fait que lire dans le manuel.Il n'y a que l'examen de mi-session et final pour nous évaluer. Le prof fait beaucoup de blagues, mais il traite aussi les élèves d'irresponsables, d'immoraux et bref, on ne se sent pas tellement apprécié.

I took 6 courses with Samedy, and you don't see me complaining! Me and my friends agree, he's the best lol. On of them took 9 courses with him ahaha. He's nice, funny, understanding but it's pretty much his way or the highway! I would definitely take a 7th course with him. "Pas de stress!!"
Had him for introduction to sociology. Pros: He's funny, tells good anecdotes... Cons: He doesn't explain what he wants for written works, gives grades with no comments whatsoever, and teaches from his textbook which is FAR too advanced for an "intro" course. Definitely would not take another class with him.

This Prof although he apparently knows what he is doing ( considering hes been teaching since the 80's and all hes done with his life is go to school) is a realllyyy bad prof. The course has no structure and is EXTREMELY unclear about what he is teaching. He claims the class is not about religion, but the cover of his book portrays the bible...

This prof is a little off his rocker. While at times entertaining, he is really tough to listen to when he's pushing his beliefs and is telling you what's "right and wrong". Isn't objectivity a key item in sociology?
He's the best teacher i've ever had in university, he explains everything clearly and he's so helpful! i recommend this class!
To be honest everyone that says that M. Samedy isin't a good teacher, they have a problem because you can never get a teacher like him that can help the students when ever they want! he's amazing to be honest! i got a B+ in his class but im sure if i went to see him i would of got higher than that.. anyways goodluck

I had to write something about the prof.WHAT A WASTE OF MY TIME!!! His class is not interesting and as many said, he forces his opinion on the students. We basically read HIS book (50$- cash?!) every single class..the only reason I went to class is because sometime he defines some of his completable symbolic words thats written in the book.WASTE!
Worst prof I've had in University. If french is your second language, you'll most likely have a hard time understanding him. He was not helpful, and even refused to see me when I had a question, because I had a class during his office hours. Avoid at all costs!!!
Dans sa classe on perd énormément de temps pour des stupidités. Il raconte des anecdotes sans liens avec le cours et est très incompréhensible. This teacher is really passionate about what he does. He may come off as cocky since he uses his own book but he always uses examples and tries to make students laugh.He takes attendance but also gives out bonus marks for right answers. Midterms are essays and reflect what you learned.Just dont challenge him. I would recommend this class!
Ok, so I took this class as an out of faculty elective and did not really care about the material. Having said that, Samedy will not teach you anything what so ever. Yes, he's funny, but he makes the class laugh at the expense of other students. He thinks he's always right and rejects the students' opinion. I got an A- with minimal effort. AVOID!!!

Hilarious prof! I enjoyed going to his class BUT I didn't understand more than half the stuff he was teaching us. His book is super confusing. He sometimes makes students read out loud from his book out loud. He uses really funny examples. If you can't read/write A LOT, don't pick this class!
While he has a sense of humour, he is hard to understand. I found he has the tendency to mumble a lot. His textbook is useless and a waste of 50 dollars. He is intolerant of French Immersion students and very stuck up. 0/10 would not reccomend.
Funny at times but such a horrible teacher, couldn't say I've learned anything the whole semester, you might maintain a good mark but mostly luck. Dont pick this class at all. Just DONT
His classes are really confusing/he dictates all his notes which is really annoying especially for a French Immersion student. Sometimes he makes jokes but usually at the expense of another student. He also loves to call out random students, so if you don't like to participate AVOID. However, His exams were pretty easy to get a good mark.

He loves pointing fingers at students and putting you on the spot. At times it felt as thought he enjoyed making fun of students. Never taking him again!

Very good prof. Un des profs les plus intelligents que jai eu. Demande beaucoup d'effort, mais est vriament intressant. Open book exams, donne des questions préparatoires et des examens-maison. Fair marker.
This is a great professor. He cracks jokes during lectures to loosen up the class. Easy grader. Would recommend this professor to anyone.
He is simply the nicest Prof ever! He is always there to help you anytime you need him. Also he is the smartest Prof I ever met in my entire life! He prepares you very well for the exams and give you questions in advance to prepare yourself (open book exam). I am going to take him again for 2 classes next semester :)
Hard to understand the prof but easy class overall.
He is incredibly boring and hard to understand. He goes off topic a lot, I really didn't learn anything about sociology, but it was an easy A. He gives his notes orally so you must show up. Also, he will make you pay cash in class for his textbook, but it is available in the library, many copies under different names and year (exact same content)
This is the best prof I have ever in UOttawa, very smart, highly knowledgeable. You learn in his class seriously. perfectly good one.
Good prof. Easy grader. I totally recommend this prof, especially for political sociology. He knows a lot, and will be able to answer all of your questions. Yes, he has his own ideas already made, but the guy is pretty much a living legend in the field.
This is an excellent Prof. and if you see any negative comments about him, it's because the student didn't take his class seriously. He is always there to help you and answer your questions, but you also need to pay attention in class and be there! If you do so you will finish with a great mark :)

He doesn't use blackboard, or ANY visual support. It is a "dictee" format where you HAVE to write down what he says out loud. Worst epistemology, and expects you to follow and think at the same time. Word for word re-wrote his book. Total waste of time and learned nothing.
If his arrogance doesn't bug you enough, his lectures will. I'm a straight A student and had no idea what was going on half the time. He based the whole class on his book and his book only. Papers and research were scary at the start but not graded too harshly. Good luck with the final.

Class is long &boring. He stands there and talks the whole time &you better take notes. Doesn't use blackboard or email. BUT Samedy truly cares for his students&wants everyone to do well and pass. Only a midterm &a final, both are essays. Will make jokes during class to "relax" us. Saved my grade &helped me pass. No textbook, but buy his book!!!!!!
Classe vraiment pas intéressante, j'écrivais des projets sans savoir si cela ferait du sens pourtant je finissais avec des A et des A-. Le prof fait écrire les notes de cours à la main, aucun PP, le livre est vraiment plate et incompréhensible.
His classes are pretty vague and your notes probably won't make any sense at the end of the day, but if you use his book as a source for your assignments you'll finish with an A. Really easy midterms and finals, just make sure you go to class. He means well but his teaching style may not be for everyone.
M Samedy is the best prof ever known at UO. very knowledgeable, smart, respect by the student, amazing lecture, to be in class is mandatory to pass. M Samedy is the most interesting teacher, stress free. Provide very good advice to student that can help for your life. I recommend him. best of the best.
Professor Samedy is a really good prof! He truly cares about his students and wants them to do well! Make sure you go to class, attendance is mandatory. His exams basically consist of writing papers, very easy to get an A if you use his textbook as a guide. Definitely use the book, he reads his notes from it directly. Awesome prof! :)
Professeur Samedy : souriant, drôle et relaxe. Le succès de ses étudiants est sa priorité #1, il va vous donner tout le matériel nécessaire pour réussir (ex: pour l'examen mi-session et final, il nous a donné un plan détaillé à suivre). Si vous ne suivez pas mot pour mot son plan, vous avez un échec. P.S : il vie et respire pour son livre !!!
Drôle, relaxe, accessible et veut sincèrement que ses étudiants réussissent. 5% de participation son accordé à tous les étudiants; examens maisons qui sont compréhensibles mais SEULEMENT axés seulement sur son livre; si vous ne suivez pas son livre mot pour mot, vous n'allez pas réussir son cours. Bonne chance, en général il est très flexible !
This teacher is very good. A lot of student literally follows him. I am trying as well, currently at my second class and hoping to finish my 3 others with him. 2 take home exams. Very low maintenance class and is straight forward in what he is looking for the take home exams. Caring and thinks of the best for his student.
This prof does not share his email and is completely unreachable outside of class hours. He is nice and caring, but unorganized in terms of assignments. 1 paper, one big group project and 1 take home final

One of the best teacher I know! He's super funny and makes you feel comfortable in his class. His teaching style is kind of old school ( No Power Points, no BrightSpace ) you have to be present in class to get notes. Really cares about his students and he's so smart. He has all the history of the world in his brain
Monsieur Samedy is funny, however 85% of the time I was lost when he explained the structure for the midterm and the final exam. The only reason why I finish with a great mark is because of the TA. I was at the TA office hours all the time, and I did not leave until I understood. Samedy lectures are ALL OVER THE PLACE! And he does not explain well

Best prof I have had at Ottawa U. Very knowledgeable, Strong lecturer and hilarious on top of that. Read his book and you will pass. Easy Power point and he prepare well the class before exam. I would take his class again I the opportunity arise. Good luck
Such a great prof, wants you to pass and is always available to talk. Makes you feel comfortable in class even if you don't understand too well. Honestly, I barely understood but I did the readings and that's all I really needed tbh + participation deffo brought my grades up. SO GRATEFUL AND TAKE HIS CLASS TO BRING YOUR GPA UP
This prof is wild. He doesn't post his powerpoint on Brightspace, he speaks so fast and with a thick accent. If you miss a class, you're screwed. Write as fast as you can, do an audio recording, and pray to god. He's really funny and likes to make the class dynamic, but it's stressful.
The worst prof I've ever had, he has no visual aid, doesn't post anything online, he wings his lecture. Doesn't repeat himself, talks way too fast and expects you to type or write everything down. It's basically a spelling bee. He's unclear with his exams. Get his book and read the whole thing if you want the slightest chance at passing.
This prof is always late. So don't worry about rushing to class. He tells you to read his book but it's not necessary at all. The notes you take in class have nothing to do with the assignments. Just show up to class and you'll be good.
He is Cool & Fresh! But sadly the content learned in class has nothing to do with the midterms and finals. Pointless class, learned absolutely nothing!
Best Prof at the university of Ottawa, every time I see he's teaching a class I take it. He never does in class exams, only take homes. Always available to answer questions, I only did the readings that needed to be done for the exams and I passed with flying colors. Highly recommend
Write everything that he says WORD FOR WORD because he wants you to regurgitate his ideas and opinions. The only reference he uses is his own book. His explanations for midterms and papers are confusing (but generally simple once you understand) and he can seem condescending at times. Take another class if possible.
This man is not clear with what he wants at all, refuses to share his PowerPoints or repeat himself. Half of the things he wants you to read are unavailable. Only took this class because it was mandatory for my program, would not recommend otherwise.
He is cool and fresh. His lectures are very long however some of the arguments that started in class are very funny. Some of the articles in his textbook are used in the exams but he will tell you which ones to use specifically so make sure you are able to adequately summerize them. He doesnt post his lecture notes however only a few are important.
This prof is unclear when he explains and speaks, he refuses to repeat himself, He has no other references except his book ( he doesn't post it online and you have to buy it) and the visuals are useless in this course (one slide per chapter) and if you take his course online, good luck because he's always late and often forgot to record the class
Terrible! Terrible! Terrible! He's the worst professor ever! His classes are him citing his book (and making you note word for word what he says) and basically forcing you to buy it (how is that legal?). He is also very mean, boring, degrading, condescending and not open to criticism. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS! Please trust me.
This teacher makes you copy word for word the notes, but doesn't put them on the screen written down. He is very hard to understand, and refuses to repeat himself. Gets very mad when someone asks him to repeat, and tells us to go watch the recording (but we still can't understand). His exams are take home, but instructions super unclear. RUN
Hard to understand what he says sometimes but with the recording of the class it shouldn't be a problem. Be ready to type he talks a lot but it's worth it.
Best prof you can have in the University all the people that are racking him lot are students that didn't attend his class be prepared to write Monsieurs always wants people to succeed he always give bonus point and he tell you exactly what he wants from you. Best prof.
The lectures are kinda boring: hes reading his book, write fast if u dont wanna miss anything. but, its an easy class and he gives a lot of bonus points if you write exactly what he wants. only three assignments, no much work outside of class

Only took me one lecture to know I needed to drop it. He goes SO FAR OFF TOPIC IN HIS LECTURES, repeats himself basically every few sentences, and only showed two slides in one lecture. His textbook is just as confusing and impossible to read. To those who read this review, I warn you: Stay. Away. From. This. Class.
The class itself isnt hard. 3 assignments, all relatively easy (although instructions were not very clear) Long lectures where the prof reads his own notes (to save time, watch the recordings instead). Also, you do not need his book. The prof is passionate but IMO his style is outdated. I would not recommend unless you have limited options.

I took SOC1504 with him and it wasn't bad. He has a very strong Haitian accent when speaking French which at first made it hard to understand, but the more you hear it, the more you get used to it. However, he doesn't have slideshows or powerpoints he reads off of. He reads solely off his book and tells you to write it down verbatim.
the lectures are really hard to follow cause there is no slides or power point to help and he goes on lots of tangents and rants that are not relevant to class subjects. The lecture were recorded which helps but i wish i could just take notes in class and actually understand what he's talking about
He was a great teacher and gave lectures that were very interesting, he would include details of his personal life in his lectures which made the projects easier to complete because he was very personable. He gave mini quizzes that were easy, but overall a great prof, dont buy the text book you wont read it!
Good teacher.
He's really nice but really not good at teaching. He has a big accent which makes it difficult to understand, not only that but he goes super fast so it's impossible to take notes and doesn't have any power points or anything on bright space. He reccords his class on zoom but says you absolutely have to be there in person or you'll loose points.
