Ms. Butler is pretty nice and her class is a breeze. I've emailed her maybe 5 times this semester though and never received a response. Other than that, every quiz and test is on canvas. There are two group projects, both are easy. Just show up and you will pass!
The work was easy, but she assigned and expected way too much for a class that is taken by mainly non-theatre majors. All quizzes and tests were online which was nice. Overall easy, but an unnecessary amount of work so I would suggest taking someone else if you can. She also rarely lets class out early and takes attendance daily.
Had an average above 100 the whole semester. Gives SO much extra credit and everything we did (quizzes, tests, midterm, final, etc) was online. Only two tough-ish assignments which were two group projects. Definitely get the textbook because her test/quiz questions come straight from it. Overall easy class
I had never taken any theatre before, but Prof Butler was great! Attendance is mandatory, and she expects you to put in the work for group projects. All quizzes and tests online. She really wants students to succeed, so put forth some effort and you will do fine! I didn't have to read the textbook much, but it's necessary to fill in study guide.
Professor Butler loves theatre and conveys her enthusiasm through each lecture. She teaches Theatre for non-majors though, so most of the class was uninterested and did the bare minimum required. There are two major group projects, a marketing campaign and a small-play performance. Most of the grades are online quizzes, so it's not hard to succeed.
Super easy class but she stopped grading assignments two weeks into the course. She never replies to emails so dont expect any feedback and don't expect to know how well you are doing before your final
Prof. Butler truly loves theatre but her lectures are so boring. Make yourself go to class though because attendance is worth 10% of your grade. All tests and quizzes are online so just put in a little effort and this class will be a breeze.
Great class. Instructor prepares you for mid-term and final. Provides study guides. Lots of homework but doable. All homework and tests online. A or B if you put in the time.
All homework was online (Easy A). The midterm and final was online (Awesome). Downside is you have to see three different plays throughout the semester. However she makes a boring subject relatively fun and entertaining to attend.
She is very sweet! She is easy to talk to and her class is not hard at all. Just remember to take the quizzes she posts online!
So many quizzes and reflections to do online (more than any of my other classes) but pretty easy. She nice and hates it when people leave class early so just don't do that.
Prof. Butler was so great. I didnt get to know her really until the end of the year when something happened with a few of my assignments that was really going to effect my grade. she was SO understanding and helpful and realized we're all human and things happen. good class but REALLY caring professor
She is bad at grading assignments, however, everything you do is online so it is easy to use references. I think there are too many assignments for being a theatre class. You have homework like three times a week.
While Intro to Theatre wasn't my favorite class, I found it to be surprisingly tolerable under Ms. Butler. Grading is pretty slow (and a common complaint apparently) but the content of the class is quite easy. Homework is frequent but fairly quick. I also found her to be very understanding and easy to approach.
This class is very easy- ended up with a 99 in her class. There are a LOT of quizzes but they are all online. If you come to class and take notes they won't be difficult to complete. Midterm and final are online as well. She kind of takes this class more seriously than to be expected for non-theatre majors. But the A is worth it in my opinion!!!
Decent lectures. Lots of homework. Attend 2 plays, read 4 plays, write play reviews/reflections, weekly reading assignments, 2 group projects (write a play concept/outline; write and act a 5-min play), a midterm and a final. Tests are pretty easy. Good amount of extra credit. Read the book, take notes, complete all assignments and you'll get an A.
Be prepared for A LOT of homework, I honestly had more homework in this class than any other. She does take attendance every day so come to class because this can effect your grade big time. There are only two tests, a midterm and final and they are both online and she gives a study guide.
She definitely takes this class WAY too seriously and the amount of homework assigned is annoying and ridiculous. However, just try and you'll probably get an A. She also didn't grade anything until finals week so I had no idea what my grade really was until then. Somehow ended up with a 99 in the class though I think she calculated wrong. Easy A!
She calls out people for being on their phones which is a little annoying in a big lecture, and there are many assignments for the class. This class by far has the most work out of all my classes but you just have to do the assignments and youll get an A.
gave too may assignments but its so many points that you could do 75% of the work and still possibly get an A. She is a late grader but as long as you do majority of the assignments and all the hundred point assignments, you will be fine. All the lecture info comes from the book so going to class is redundant but she does take attendance.
She cares a lot about theatre. She takes attendance every class. There is a final and a midterm, both online and easy if you try. There are lots of quizzes, don't wait to do them. You have to go see 2 plays and write about them, its a big part of your grade, but easy. She's a late grader, but if you've done everything right then no need to worry
If you need a fine art credit, take Dr. Butler! She knows you want an easy A, and she gives you the perfect opportunity for one. All test were online (including the final). We were required to attend a few plays on campus, but I loved all of them. She makes a "get this out of the way" class really enjoyable, and I actually learned a lot!
super easy class as long as you show up and do the work. you show up, she lectures, then you leave and all the work is online. a lot of busy work. slow grader. midterm and final both taken online at home. there are 2 plays you are required to go see, 2 plays you are required to read, and then canvas quizzes answers always in notes/textbook.
Many say Butler takes this class too serious but that is not the case. This is a reading/study quiz heavy class but it isn't hard if you do the work. It should be an easy A if you stay on top of your assignments and turn things in on time. The group project is a major part of your grade. If done right it should be fun and an easy 100
Quizzes/midterm/final are online. The class is very boring but you can tell that she loves theatre. If youre on your phone or talking she will call you out in the middle of a big class so thats kind of annoying. Attendance is mandatory. She assigns A TON of busy work for hw & didnt put ANY of our grades in until finals week. Take notes in class.
Low key hard class. I took her for theatre to fill a fine art credit. I do not recommend. Tons of busy work.
I'm minoring in theatre and this class is completely unenjoyable. The lectures aren't interesting and there is a LOT of work. She takes it all a little too seriously and is VERY slow to grade your work. Doesn't put in grades until the last possible second. However, she gives lots of opportunities for extra credit and tests are all open note.
Gives an unnecessary amount of work for a class titled Theatre for Non-Theatre Majors. If you're big into theatre you may enjoy this class, but with it being named what it is, don't be fooled.
ok so trying to help out fellow people taking electives that are not theatre majors -- DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS . you will be loaded with work that is just so unnecessary honestly. you also have to attend 3 separate plays which is a lot for a non major class... save your time and take something else .
My work load for this class is double than that of ANY of my core classes. Given 4 assignments for one play. Assignments are tedious, ridiculous, and there's SO many of them. On top of that, she is condescending, passive aggressive, and out of our 51 assignments so far, the only graded we graded by canvas. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!!!!!! PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is a big fan of unnecessary busy work but wont grade anything until the very last week of the semester. Is not lenient on late work either. Understanding of excused absences though.
This class was intended for non theatre majors, however after taking this course you would not feel that way. This course was way too specific and in depth. It also consisted of more busy work than most of my other classes combined, in addition to the ridiculous work load the instructor doesn't even grade it until the week before finals. DONT TAKE!
She's a fine teacher, but it seems like this semester she wasn't as invested in the class. She gave tons of busy work, and some days would randomly cancel class only to assign a module to complete that day. I didn't pay attention to any of her lectures, but would not reccomend that as she assigns frequent online quizzes and they are very specific.
Dr. Butler did not begin grading assignments until the week of finals. She gives so much busy work that is extremely unnecessary with super close due dates. If you are looking for an easy fine arts credit, DO NOT TAKE HER. She cancels class on Fridays regularly and gives more work to do online than you would have to do in the class period.
Prof Butler is a little too passionate about theatre to be teaching a non-major class. TONS of busy work with seemingly random due times. I had assignments due at 10am and 1pm and 3pm and 5:30 pm among other weirdly specific times. If you miss more than 2 classes she takes off a third of a letter grade per absence. RIDICULOUS WORKLOAD!!
I took her class during a mini-mester in the summer. The mini-mester class was super easy as long as you turned your work in on time. There was a lot of busy work involved but it wasn't hard. She is very passionate about theatre, so respect it, because she gets frustrated by people who don't take it seriously.
A great and easy class for an elective. NOT a great class if you actually want to see your grade throughout the semester. It's ridiculous that she does not grade until finals week. She blames it on having so many students and assignments. DON'T ASSIGN THE WORK IF YOU CAN'T GRADE IT.
The class isn't hard overall, but she does expect A TON for it to be a nonmajor class. Also, don't buy the textbook as you don't really need it. I never did reading and would just google what I needed. Midterm and Final are also online.
This class is not for anyone who has a major in fine arts, but yet she treats it that way. She honestly has given me more of a homework load than any of my core classes. And it honestly piles on to all the other stuff I have to do. She cancels class A LOT.... but when she does you have to do a long module and do discussions. I would not recommend.
She always cancels class 30 minutes before class. Our class starts at 9:30, one day she emailed us at 9:25 to say she was going to be late, and then she cancels the class by email at 9:50. You have to do a lot of online module, you need to write A LOT of things. She gives TONS of busy work that more than my core classes. DO NOT TAKE HER!!!
TONS of busy work. You need spend A LOT of time to do the unnecessary things. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS !!!!!!!!!
Yes, all of the busy work gets old, but this class is SO easy. Dr. Butler cares a lot about theatre, but at the end of the day just turn everything and take the open note quizzes and you will be fine. You don't actually have to read the text book to do assignments and take tests.
cancelled class ALL the time, but 30 mins before it started. With Covid19, she absolutely swamped us with busy work. My to-do section in Canvas is filled with her crap to the point where I can't see my other classes. The work isn't hard, just annoying. I googled everything. Don't buy the textbook or the other required plays. Overall, an easy A.
All in all, I ended the class with an A. Tests and quizzes were online, open book, open note. We had to check in on an app that used location for attendance which was annoying. She just yells a lot and can come off rude at times. Also, its boring but an easy A if you do the work,
Professor Butler was extremely mediocre. She continually cancelled class, typically at least once a week. When COVID-19 hit, she loaded us down with hours of busy work. Luckily, all of the quizzes were online. It was an easy elective, but I would've enjoyed it much more if there were actual lectures and not just discussions and quizzes.
The class does include lots of homework.. but easy to get a grade if you do homeworks. Not too bad.
I took this class as a easy elective and turned out to be a class with so much busy work that took me more time than any of my other classes that are so much more important. I would recommend a different progessor.
The professor is very nice but the class itself terrible. DO NOT TAKE THIS IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN EASY ELECTIVE!! The material is not hard but the class is just such a heavy workload. I take just as much time doing this class as I do financial accounting. Try to take another arts elective if you can!
A lot of work, take an easier teacher for theatre if you have a choice
She was very nice and easy to work with. Only hard part in the class is the group project and that wasn't her fault - it was the people in my group. Solid choice and a fun semester.
Lots of homework but completely doable since most of the material can be found on quizlet. She's a sweet professor and was really easy on grades. Got 100's for all major assignments. Take this class online with her if you can!
I really like Professor Butler. She gives a lot of homework but it helped me make an A in her class. Her exams are a little tough but they are open-book. They were only harder for me bc I did not prepare like I should have. She responds quickly to emails and she is very nice. I would take her again if I could!
Really liked Professor Butler. She did a fantastic job of covering the subject of theatre, especially aspects and forms of theatre that have historically been ignored or disregarded. Her class is easy but also very informative and great for anyone.
Good teacher- you can tell she loves her job. Class is fun and engaging if you put effort into it. Lots of chapter reads and quizzes, do them early and get them out of the way. Extra credit opportunities! Fast replies with emails, and lots of detailed descriptions for assignments, clear grading. Assignment, attendance and participation heavy.
Prof. Butler is FANTASTIC at working with you and giving you second chances. Her class is not hard to pass, the answers to everything are in her lectures or the textbook. Quizzes on each chapter, but taken at your availability.
Overall, a lot of work for just a fine art credit. However, all of the work is pretty easy, its just quite a bit for a fine arts credit class.
She will literally never show up for class. So if you don't like to go to class this might be the teacher for you. Sounds nice but you'll be tested on things she never taught because she doesn't show up! Easy class, lazy teacher.
Butler is a passionate theatre teacher, and if you like theatre as well, all the work may be more enjoyable to you; but it's a lot! Pretty interesting stuff though. Midterm and finals are online and on Quizlets. If you do your work, this is an easy grade. Butler herself is pretty fair and understanding.
She doesn't make this class especially hard, but her lectures are boring and you have a lot of work. You have tons of quizzes but everything you do is online so you should be able to find the answers on quizlet. Everything is open book and open internet. You only get 2 unexcused absences. It's not a hard class, but it's more work than it should be.
Prof Butler is an amazing instructor overall. Very passionate about her job and covers the subject of theatre exceptionally. If you're willing to put in the work, you'll get an A. Lectures are rather long and she does assign a large number of quizzes and writing responses. Don't take if you're expecting a simple course.
SHE IS TERRIBLE! Doesnt show up to class and cancels it after class starts and you are there. You have to go watch 3 live plays. Write SUPER long reflections (9-11 pages) about them. She is terrible and crazy dont take her not worth the amount of work. Im a engineering major and this is the most time consuming besides chem. SUPER BIG WORK LOAD!!
Not worth it. For almost every class she would wait until 20 minutes before the class started to cancel. She even canceled class 5 minutes after it began once.
Her class had a lot of busy work and took up more time than some of my core classes, her quizzes and tests were all very easy however
This class is incredibly easy. You have to see live performances but they're great. She often cancels class due to health complications of her or her students. She is very accepting of late work (regardless of the reason) and absences due to illnesses. She does have participation grades but they are not difficult. Strongly recommend core FA.
Very easy. I'm going to be honest; I did not once read the assigned readings and I'm currently 14 weeks in and holding a very comfortable A. If you go to this class and have a general understanding of theater terms, this class maybe added like 30 minutes weekly outside of class. If you need Core Fine Art; take it.
I took this class for a core fine arts credit. There was homework every week, but it was never difficult; typical busy work. She was really flakey though, we constantly had class cancelled an hour before it started or suddenly moved to zoom. She once cancelled class after it started and everyone was sitting in the lecture hall. Overall easy class.
She was a very caring professor. She gave a good amount of homework, but it was always a long time before the due date. If I needed help, I could email her at any time.
Pretty easy class for a fine arts credit but it was boring. Make sure to attend class to fill out attendance padlet. Lots of quizzes and busy work but too difficult and most was open note. Professor Butler moved class to zoom or made it asynchronous a lot which was annoying especially cause she let us know kind of last minute.
Very easy class and open note /book exams. We had to do a lot of zoom because a lot of students were sick at times. Going to class is only worth the attendance credit. Very lenient and understanding about missed assignments.
Super easy for a fine arts credit. There is a lot of homework but it's usually pretty easy. She also gives out lots of extra credit and opportunities to turn in late assignments. The quizzes and tests also aren't bad at all. She is very understanding and will answer emails promptly.
Jean Bulter's class was relatively easy but for it to be a fine arts elective it could be considered a lot of work. There are 2 plays you are required to watch in person at Auburn's theater and do critical responses on. They're pretty long assignments. She also cancels class frequently or makes it asynchronous.
Butler clearly cares about what she is teaching, but she can come off incredibly condescending at times. She constantly policed headphone usage in her class and it felt like I was back in high school. Overall the course content is super easy. Just come to class and you'll be fine.
Not a very difficult professor, lecture based classes, lots of homework that is quite easy. Clearly cares about theatre, but was quite uninteresting. Comes off as frequently rude and is unhelpful. Easy class, but not a particularly effective professor.
A few things to note about Professor Butler is she cancels class multiple times a month (sometimes once a week), her lectures consist mostly of watching youtube videos, and attendance is necessary. The class itself is an easy A if you pay any attention and go to the required performances.
This class was fairly easy. Attendance is mandatory and you must also attend a certain number of plays per semester. I went to two. I actually enjoyed this class even though I am not a fine arts major. As long as you go to class, attend the plays, and do your homework then it should be an easy A.
Low effort towards non-majors.
so easy. cancels class all the time and every assignment is open book. you have to see three performances but they were not bad
Cancels class all the time, very slow grader, and workload is pretty hefty. But you can always typically find a quizlet with all the answers, so it's pretty easy. Attendance is taken online, too, so you can skip and just log onto the attendance thing and say you were there. Have to see 3 plays, but they're not bad. Easy A and easy credit.
Weekly modules with a quiz based on the lecture page, a discussion post, and an assignment. You have to see two plays and do assignments on them but both can be done online. Midterm and final have clear study guide to prepare you.
From my experince taking this class online, is that as long as you do all your work you will get an A. She's not unreasonable at all, but at times, she can assign a lot of work. I overall had a good experince.
It can be a bit of work for an intro class but the work is never hard. As long as you do the homework you'll get an A, pretty much. She cancels quite a bit but usually gives a 30-minute heads-up before class if it's a last-minute problem. If you want easy credit, I'd say take her. She grades a bit slowly but you usually just get an A on it anyway.
She is a slow grader but if you do the work your grade will be an A. Since she is a slow grader she is flexible with due dates. Must see three plays and do an assignment to go with them. These assignments can be lengthy. Attendance is required. Quizzes and tests are open notes. Cancels class a lot which is good. Overall not bad
Loved her class! I was slammed with work this semester because I was a STEM major and she was so kind and helped when needed. I have never written a review before for a professor so this should tell you just how good she is! If you are looking for a kind, understanding, and genuine professor.... she is the one!!
Easy A If you do the work but there is an annoying amount of work especially for non-majors who are taking for an easy class. All tests and quizzes are open book, just lots of assignments. Very kind woman though.
i like her. shes not as rude as she pretends to be shes actually mad friendy
takes an EXTREMELY long time to grade papers. would only recommend to major specific students. had to attend two plays in person and watch one online. after each play we were given a report that was quite in depth. attendance is taken for a grade. will cancel class a decent amount. good bit of quizzes. seems to be a very sweet lady.
The class is decent, all quizzes/exams online and open book! Your attendance matters but it is done on padlet. Its hard to not get an A, pretty good elective. You do have to go to productions but will have a lengthy writing assignment, but that is probably the most difficult thing you will have to do in this class. Asynchronous classes as well.
You have to see plays outside of class but other than that it is a pretty easy class.
This class was more work than it needed to be. Wasn't hard, just a lot of homework. She was clear about her expectations when it came to grading, some of the assignments just felt unnecessarily long. The only tests were the midterm and final and they were open note. Wouldn't take again because of the workload considering I am not a theatre major.
She is very sweet in and out of class. If she see's you walking around on campus she'll always say hi and check in on you
I didn't mind her, she was kinda weird but an easy class. Attendance is taken on a padlet every daay so you don't actually need to be in class, just sign into the padlet before she closes it. She also cancels class a lot. All tests and quizzes are online which makes it easy. I didn't study and barely went to class and still got an A.
So, I think I had her in a bad semester. She is a terrible grader and won't put anything in for months. There is a lot of homework and you have to attend two performances and write reflections on them. This is not an easy fine arts class if thats what you're taking it for. If you are a major, or genuinely interested in learning more, it's okay. :|
One of those fine art teachers who is offended that people are taking her class for an easy A, so she makes it as hard as possible to get said A
WAY to much work. It's ridiculous. Doesn't ever put in grades and waits till the very last minute so you don't know how you are doing in the class and on assignments. It is an easy A if you do the work but it is such a crazy amount of work it is not worth it. Assignments are not easy either. Take a different elective.
She's good. Very approachable and willing to answer questions to the best of her ability.
