I did not learn anything in this class because as Jeanny would like to say "It is all intuitive" However, he does remind me of a teddy bear.
messy writing, can't read sh*t. he appears to know his stuff however does not know how to handle puzzled undergrad students. watch out when he gets sick. did enjoy his TeX'ed notes however at the start of the course.
He is nice person. Kind and helpful. Much better than the second year EC295's french sucker.
To commenter below, my experience told me he is good professor. He corrected my misunderstanding as long as he found, even though they are from last course. He is not rude. He never walked away and shut the door without finishing conversation. That is RUDE, that's one of the 2nd prof teaching econometrics did. That's called RUDE. Remember Dude!
To be fair, he is a nice prof; he knows subject area he is teaching, although he still needs to learn how to teach students. He has potential to be a good prof. Materials in midterm are lot harder than examples he gave in classes and assignments. There is no enough example to practice.
I like him...
Things profs shouldnt do & eid did: read midterms during writing and snicker; say we'll all fail; have 30% of 3rd yr course determined by groups you dont even know!; imply that we are stupid nearly every class (uh teaching problem, not students?); have an average of 35% on midterm. Classes not structured so no good notes, textbook useless for tests
THE Worst So called TEACHER that ever walked down the halls of SBE.... this guy is wants to fail you. You can not ask him any questions because he will laugh at you, and no matter how much you study his Exams Test your ABILITY not your Knowlegde of the course
This guy is smart and knowledgable in econometrics but I do'nt think he's qualified to teach. He encourages ppl to ask questions, and when some ppl do he actually puts them down. Sometimes he lacks patience to teach, 2 weeks left of the term and he throws a 30% project at us, we have exams to prep for and other assgs due too, give it to us earlier
poor teacher-> poor students. i remember his comment once during midterm 2, something to the extent of "blind leading the blind". he is not blind in the sense that he knows the material but more in the sense that he cannot teach. please go take How-to-teach-undergrad-econometrics 101 and come back or do something better with your lofty phd.
Jean Eid is a really good teacher. He teaches in a socrates fashion and asks questions that direct you to the point he is trying to make. It keeps you listening at all times and thinking. He gets heat for making some kids look dumb in class, but if you dont take it too seriously, this makes class funny. His flaw is he doesnt realize some ppl are s
His flaw is he doesnt realize some ppl are sensitive and his comments discourage them causing them to band together and hate him. He cares for his students, but some are not yet adults, and his negatively reinforcing comments [ie tough love teaching] hurt more than help. (though if he was nice, i think ppl would find another reason to complain.)
Word on the street is Jean Eid is fired....N to the ppl sucking up to him...well the average on the test was 37.5% how well could u have possibly done. The prof is very knowledgable, i agree, however he forgets that he is not in a warzone anymore.
needs to be more organized with the course structure... needs to give a guideline of what he expects during the semester from the students. provide better quality lecture notes...
One of the most enjoyable stats classes I have taken. Challenging, but this is university. If you can handle sarcasm, this is the prof for you. If there is anything to complain about it would be his inability to explain concepts to students who are just not getting it, but that will come with experience.
He is a really smart guy and knows his econometrics but he cant teach. no real structure to the lessons, my notes are a combination of scribbles and rants he makes throughout class on the spot. It feels like you kno less afterwards for some reason. He is helpful at answering questions.
Poor quality professor, very messy writing and disorganized. the below comments sum everything up quite nice
Worst professor I've ever had. Can't teach at all, comes to class unprepared everytime, I feel so ripped off that I paid for this course. He is a smart guy I'll give him that.. the only reason I know this is b/c he takes every opportunity to make the students look dumb and himself appear smarter. FIRE THIS MAN
he such a bad prof.....his tests are messed up....don't ever study for his tests....nothing from the notes will be on there......it will be random****, that you can guess at ........
Better than people are giving him credit for...
He came to class with nothing but the textbook in hand. Drew some random scribbles on the board and got upset when nobody knew what the answers were. Hes definately smart, but he should rethink he choice of becoming a professor. Stick to research or something.
Knows his stuff, exams are very challenging, but everything works out in the end.
He's the worst prof I ever have. extremely subjective..If He thinks you are an A student you will get an A if he thinks you are a C student you will get a C no matter what..I know people who got D in EC255 introductory econometrics but ended up with As in his course, students I knew didn't deserve that much.On the other hand he screwed other student
How can you explain that students who received C in his class ended up with A in the advanced Econometrics whereas students he really liked almost failed the advanced econometrics class. He is extremly subjective which is really unfair for students who paid their tuitions to do something.I'm sure he will not last that long unless he finally adjusts
What can I say, this is my second time with this prof and he is absolutely terrible. Although he is very smart, he has no ability to teach whatsoever. He is very lazy and does not prepare for his lectures. I've had some bad teachers in my years as a student, but Jean Eid is the teacher I've had in my life as a student. He should not be teaching
very knowledgable, quite intelligent expects way too much from students, never ask a question or you will be chirped for at least 20 minutes about how you should have known this, from this because of this and this. overall challenging course, he should try and be more approachable.
AMAZING
Terrible..the worst teacher i ever had in my life. Studying is useless in his class...dont bother. his tests are impossible no matter how much you study. Averages are in the 30% range.
the worst teacher ever...tests have nothing to do with material learned in class. Hel ask you questions that are 5 levels above the level that your studying at.
Jean is great, when it comes to econometrics you won't find a better professor to teach the class. If you work hard and show interest the sky's the limit - but if you are looking for a free ride you should probably take film studies
Jean Eid is by no means an easy professor. For this class he was unfair with his final exam. However, I am currently taking another course with him and while he demands a lot of work, his tests have been fair and he appears to be trying to test the way he teaches. I have seen a significant improvement in his test fairness. Not an easy prof though.
First of all, EC355 is a extremely hard course, and he is definitely not easy on it. He is alright if we pay really really close attention to what he is saying in class because there's so much calculations and his writing is horrible. If you don't understand, ask. He is quite patient, ask again until you do if you still don't understand.
Be prepared for "So what does this mean?"
I've already done what he's teaching. So i don't find the stuff truly hard. But he's SO disorganized and so messy I have no idea what is going on. My knowledge and understanding are regressing. His notes have no headings what so ever. He also assumes we are just a bunch of morons and his attitude in class is just offensive to ALMOST all of us.
Terrible! Drives me up the wall. Makes the material WAY TOO complicated. Studying independently is much better. Contributes nothing to my understanding!
Class is challenging but that's not my real problem. He is extremely disorganized. Not thorough at all!
intelligent prof but SO messy and SO mean :(
Its funny how he can get away with what he does without being reviewed. Its not like he has any seniority. And you'll find that Professors who do are actually great instructors. Making a test difficult is fine, as long as the Instructor is clear, organized, and committed. He certainly doesn't give Laurier the greatest impression.
He's very helpful when you ask questions and encourages questions to be asked. I think he has improved because he always refers to this site as how bad he "used to be". However, he has terrible notes that don't help me study at all and the lectures are extremely hard to follow as he'll go from a simple concept to an unheard of one in seconds.
good guy
I dont get why people are complaining. Jean is one the nicest and most approachable profs at Laurier. His assignments and tests may be hard but he goes through everything in class, if you want a good grade, you need to practice! you'll only get out- what you put in, easy as that.
he is one of the best prof I ever had ! you guys are just been mean to him ! For me, he is doing a FANTASTIC Job !
Best economics prof at laurier hands down.
Great Professor
Poor communication in class. Doesn't respond to some emails.
Did not teach 2 of 8 chapters indicated on the syllabus. 20-40% of his tests draw from material that is not in the textbook, which is normally not a concern, except he offers NO resources on said topics to use as exam prep. Extremely intelligent, however it feels like this class was his last priority.
Avoid this proff, he tests material not covered. Example: a huge STATA assignement that he taught nothing about what so ever. He likes to explain things in 'common sense' terms that are hard to apply to numberical problems. His English grammar is not great so there is often ambiguity in his explanations and questions. Does not answer student e-mail
Very helpful and genuinely wants to help students
Now that it's all over I realize that he's one of the most exciting proffs Ive ever had and intertwines theory with real-life content in ways that I would have never thought possible. Really made me like statistics by the end of the course, even though it was tough. Makes you see how useful life is in every day applications.
Has good intentions, and generally wants you to learn. However he is not an effective professor. His tests do not reflect the material covered in class. Almost as if he creates the tests without remembering what he taught. He will answer your question with a question. His lectures are illegible. Avoid him as a prof if you can.
Doesn't put in a lot of effort. All of his examples have errors as well.
Great Professor, you just need to stay committed. he is the real life example of a University professor and he will shape your work ethic. YOU PUT IN THE WORK, YOU GET A GOOD GRADE. I ENTERED THE EXAM WITH A C- AND LEFT WITH AN A!
Avoid. Terrible Prof
AVOID THIS PROFF AT ALL COSTS.
If you like surprises in midterms and finals. He will make sure you receive it. He doesn't give a excriment about what he says in class and he doesn't give a rat when constructing midterms. Avoid at all cost!
Makes a difficult class even harder. Refuses to answer questions, and provides answer keys/solutions with just as many errors as correct answers.
Tells you to use the textbook to study, never uses concepts from the textbook. Also has a lot of typos and mistakes in his marking
SOOOOOOO BAD!, class average of 50's and 40's between midterms, final is probably gonna have 90% of us retaking the course cause he's leaving.
He makes it seem like everything is explained in class, then when it comes to the first midterm you will be left very confused. He has VERY unnecessary long assignments, and makes you purchase an online system that costs about 300. He never answers emails, and if he does answer your questions he is very rude and unmotivating. AVOID IF YOU CAN
He is a funny guy but it is easy to see that he does not want to be teaching, he despises coming into class and one of my favorite quotes of the year was:" Dont complain, my daughter does this and she is in grade 1". I totally forgot that they started advanced statistical proofs in grade 1, thanks for the reminder Jean.
Mean SO.B, useless, helpless. Provided racisst data for assignments. Famous Jean Quotes : Drop course, take next year.- I dont want to hear that you spent 80 hours on the assignment. You should have spent more.
You will fail the midterms. You will hate him at first. But if you read the textbook, systematically, and briefly look over his notes, you can get an A+ A A-
READ textbook, and briefly look over his notes and you will do well. You will hate him at first and the course but ask yourself why you are in Economics?
he is my Role model. he knows what he is doing.
His classes are tough, but he knows his stuff and how to teach it. With him, you get what you put in. If you care, study, and show a bit of interest, he's a good guy. He's tough, no doubt, but a MUCH better prof than he gets credit for. He treats you like a adult, and sadly a lot of students don't like that.
Amazing professor. Most people only dislike him because they don't want to put in effort. There is a reason why only 10% of the class gets 90+ because thats the only part of the class that actually doesn't resort to excuses in this class. One of the best professors I've ever had.
Very smart proff, He knows what he is doing. you have to attend classes, read the text book and do assignments . Prictice-practices and practise. I would recommend working on your " math proofs" before you take his classes.
For any ECON student planning to graduate, EC355 taken with Jean Eid will be your the most difficult class (in my opinion) The material is already confusing and his midterm and finals were all proofs which you have to understand. He's know's what he's talking about and is sometimes helpful but be prepared to suffer. He shows no mercy....
Dr. Eid lectures well, he will teach you what you need to know to perform on his exams, and will keep you laughing along the way. If you can, find a way to enjoy econometrics - if you don't it isn't Dr. Eid's fault. Go to class, work hard, read the textbook, and you will do fine.
The bad: Handwriting leaves MUCH to be desired and his online notes are good but were very delayed and contained errors. The good: Provides a lot of help if asked. Clear expectations, he tests what he teaches for the most part so do all the practice problems! Extra: Read the appendix! Review ALL properties of var and expectation b4 taking this.
He is a very intelligent person, however the speed at which he goes through topics in class makes it diffiicult to grasp concepts, especially the ones we are seeing for the first time. He will help you if you go to him a lot but the course itself is a difficult one: just too much content too fast ( BRUSH UP ON YOUR MATH/CALC. SKILLS) STUDY STUDY!!!
The midterm average was a 36 percent . For the final exam , an array of practise questions were provided and lectures were turned into a tutorial for those questions. This set us up for sucrss on the final . However the same strategy was not used for the midterm ( this is why the majority of the midterm content seemed to be too difficult).toughcour
I don't like his teaching style, he just read through ppt at each lecture. I did not learn anything from his lectures. He should do more practice questions to make students understand the material instead of reading ppts. The midterm was absolutely hard, i couldn't solve them from his teaching. But lucky he curved 20 points in the midterm.
If you do your work and come to class, you should be fine. For the midterm, he actually gave us both short answer questions previously as homework, with the solutions to them as well. Jean can seem a little heartless at times, but that's all part of his teaching style. Overall, he's a tough prof, but you can definitely do well if you try.
If you do the textbook readings and ask for help he will provide it. Teaches very fast and if you have weak math skills this class will be challenging.
Hard to understanding.
Good prof, if you do the work and attend class you will do fine.
Interesting person but lousy prof, pls don't take his courses
Awful prof. Doesn't expand on concepts or go through examples. Reads through powerpoints.
Not a very good prof. Refuses to provide students with ample resources to prepare for exams, and doesn't provide any practice questions to help prep for exams. If you have to take him for EC270 or EC370, I would recommend taking it with a different prof at all costs.
Professor can't explain numerical questions that well. Midterms usually consist of 3 small questions given extremely high weightage. So if you don't understand one question clearly get ready to lose 30% since the grading is extremely tough.
Does not know how to teach. Puts you down when asking a question. Assumes everyone understands even though no one knows what's going on
Every midterm has only two short answer questions which means you will lost most of marks if you don't know one small part of thing and that's why the grade on avg always below 50%, he is lazy and thinks we all know what he knows. Slides are very unorganized.
In the answer to the assignment questions he post in the final review, there are many answers that don't not match the questions. However, he even doesn't check and correct it. Only thing he does is just post it out. Dodge him if you can.
Does not believe in practice questions when micro is essentially a math-heavy course. Tests were poorly designed and not reflective of any of the assignments or quizzes he suggests we use to practice instead (had extension questions with many theories that undergraduates students learning the basics would not understand).
Brush up on your calculus before EC270. Prof is a really good guy and teaches the economics well, but is not good at teaching the math. If you know basic calculus you will be fine, but he expects you to already be familiar with the concepts and wont explain them most of the time
Jean Eid's EC370 is a tough course for the average student. Many students found his midterms to be brutal. Expect the final question on the exams to be a problem that you haven't seen done in lecture. There is a lot of material crammed into one semester. Shortcut to success: #1. Go to every class. #2. Ignore textbook work. #3. Study his assignments
The worst and ridiculous prof I have ever had. He is unresponsible for students and did not care students. He does not know how to teach and bad handwriting. No response for email, just SKIP him for every course he teaches
This prof doesn't know his stuff well. Class lecture contents were terrible explained. After finish his class less than 5 people understood his way of doing math. He doesn't care anything about his students and hard to reach. He cancelled two classes and gave the exact scheduled exams with same content. Most exams questions were unexpected! Avoid!!
wouldn't recommend this prof to anyone
Difficult teacher, calculus heavy and no calculus preparation for the lesson. Posted very minimal practice questions and homework to which they were also many typos within. Midterm and Final averages hovered around 50. Try your best to get another Prof!
I've never worked so hard at a class to pull off such awful marks. Midterm and exam questions came out of no where with no way to properly prepare. Quizzes are easy enough, assignments get gradually more difficult. Class has a good split up but testing really brings to class average down. Check your grades as marks on tests are often incorrect.
worst prof, avoid at all costs!!
You basically have to teach the course material to yourself but its so hard to do so because all his notes and learning materials have typos in them. I took this class thinking it couldn't be as bad as everyone says it is but IT IS THAT BAD, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!
He is pretty cool but he is so bad at teaching, he just assume everyone knows the material pretty well and does not explain much about the math. I heard last year average midterm grades was 38 or something... this year is better but still quite upsetting
my #1 piece of advice to all econ students at laurier is avoid this prof at all costs, cool and funny guy but his class is a STRUGGGGLE.
Do yourself a favour and AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. Never never never never take his class
Dont do it - not only does he act unethically by mocking students for asking questions, his information is riddled with inexcusable typos. Grades on tests are often added up incorrectly. I have noticed that he makes seemingly unclear questions and makes them worth a lot.. then he gives no part marks so you lose like 20 marks out of 100 for small
Ruined my undergrad. Only has midterms and finals that are crazily hard and questions are similar to extension questions. Laughed when we asked for practice questions and extra help for exams, and is super disorganized with no slides so you're forced to read his ugly writing for notes. (you'll laugh at how easy it is to understand with a GOOD prof)
Quizzes, notes and slides filled with many typos and errors, almost feels impossible to do well in this class, avoid this prof at all costs
Never have put in more work in a class to have the worst grade I'll receive. Type of prof that makes you want to drop out. Content is not hard to learn, but questions on midterms often include things that we haven't even seen or learned, so avoid if you can, if not GGWP
This program is not worth it just go to bba
I worked my butt off and still failed. I took it again the following semester with another professor, and I got an A. Microeconomics is very interesting and easy to understand with the right professor. Do yourself a HUGE favour, and just take it with another professor. Avoid Jean Eid. I have never received anything lower than an A- until him.
man needs to relax and teach at phd level
Worst prof I've ever had. Never stressed about a class as much as I stressed about EC270. Never cried about school until EC270. Just don't take it with him. Actual terrible prof. Couldn't care about his students whatsoever.
To future econ students, best of luck with this prof that don't care about you. Prepare for most exciting redbull, self hated fueled nights of your life as Jean prepares to slap you with the biggest fattest F or D no matter how much effort you put in. Finals was said to be cumulative, but that wasn't the case.
BAD BAD BAD. Do not take this course with this prof if you want to do well. Zero responsibility for his students. Zero information is given about the tests, final and stuff. Delayed responses to email, lack of clarity. OMG I was literally crying the whole time. I hate this prof.
not so much that he is a tough grader, as that he is unclear in his expectations. As an undergrad ,i have never had a professor refuse to provide feedback. I have also never had a prof laugh at my lack of understanding and mock me because i didn't understand something. The math in upper year econ is hard : it only feels harder if we are unsupported
Worst professor in my university career. Doesn't give clear expectations of what you need to know for tests and exams. Very unreliable , will say hes going to post practice questions but will forget. He moves fast through lectures often making mistakes in his math so all in class examples are useless. Not great at answers questions.
MBA students come from all walks of life and education, professor doesn't understand that certain students may not have knowledge of heavy math. We can learn if the concepts have been taught in class, but they are not. Final exam was going to have no review until enough students complained, final review taught new concepts 7 days before exam.
Please be easy!!!!!
Jean is an incredibly smart man and is knowledgeable about empirical applications of the concepts he practices into the real world, making him an extremely good professor on a personal level. The good parts of his character seem to dissipate during lectures and exams, where the content is unclear and the exams are quite difficult.
His weekly quizzes are straight from test banks and do not match his midterm and exams. There is a textbook but he does not follow the content of it at all. His multiple choices have over 8 options per question. The first midterm had an average of 45%. There is no mock midterm or mock exam.
Though the assignments toward the end were quite tough along with the concepts, Jean Eid did a decent job of teaching us the course material, despite the overall difficulty.
Jean loves to use derivatives and integrals to explain basic concepts like marginal revenue and cost. Exam problems were pretty math heavy and long. No one had any clue what we were learning during his lectures as slides were mostly just graphs. Very lenient marker for assignments. Overall a lot of time needs to be put in to do well in this course.
Unironically the worst professor I had in 4 years at Laurier. Didn't seem to enjoy replying to emails, offer help, or provide adequate notes for feedback. Shockingly unwilling to change course for the pandemic, which sucked even more as I took the course right when it hit. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Rude. Unhelpful. Not very nice. Very smug and full of himself. He will not help you out with anything, you need to do everything on your own. Very entitled.
Good guy. If you take EC310 (Computational Economics) its mostly assignments. There's a midterm and final but they're not weighed very much. Computational economics was pretty much learning to code economic problems in R
Very good prof, would take again
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
this guy just doesn't know how to teach. the whole class failed the midterm and the final was so much harder than he told us. i had to get tutors to do well in his class.
Worst Prof at WLU by far. Lecture material and textbook doesn't even cover the level of content he expects on the exam. His exams are out of ec370 course scope for other profs. No practice exams, no exam outline of what to expect and adds variables and question types never gone over in class. No cheat sheet despite other profs allowing one. AVOID
The worst professor in econ.
Worst prof ever in econ PLZZ DONT EVER TAKE HIM!!!!!
Tough marker, doesnt outline what he wants out of you for the few assignments he assigns. Get ready to use STATA and Markstat more than youve been taught so far. Pray you get a good TA, theyll be the most help. Exams arent too hard but doesnt seem to want to help review your grades once theyre in. Learn how to teach yourself and youll be fine.
Attending class is a must, answer questions for marks (even if wrong, as long as you try you are fine) Many of the questions done in class will be on the midterm and on the final. Assignments all have examples (with solutions) posted weeks in advance. If you are confused go to office hours, he will walk you through what you don't know.
Worst professor at wilfrid laurier university fr. Does not answer emails or help you in class. My guy lost it when no one answered questions in class and ended it early.
I was very worried about this guy from his ratemyprof rating. However, aside from the fact that he always seems upset while lecturing, he was actually pretty good at his job. He went over concepts multiple times when people were confused, and accommodated every problem I had in his office hours.
Worst Prof ever
I think I would rather get attacked by a bear than take another class with jean eid. It seems as though he thrived on the downfall of his students but had a bit of a redemption arc last minute by giving us an easy final after the average of both midterms was under 45%. Weird. If you have to push graduation in order to not take his class DO IT
