She talks all period, and when shes done you still don't understand what she was talking about.
She is not a very understandable teacher. Jean Garret talks all period and when you ask her questions she says things like. "well you'll get into that when you get into english 1A" you have a quiz at every period. The quizzes are pretty easy if you understand her.

I understand how to organize my ideas before I write and she made doing a research paper interesting. I'm until Fall to take her for 1A.
Great professor. I learned alot from her since she asks for alot. Readings were interesting and she doesnt grade too harsh. Shes easy if you like to read and want to improve your writing. I just hated the citing.
I'm taking her for Lit 2. I used to feel clueless about stories and poetry, but now I finally get it.
Mrs. Garrett is not a good teacher. She is not mean or anything. it is just that you can't understand her. She says the word UMM like 500 times in one sentence. By the time she is done talking you have know idea what she said becuase all you can think about are the UMm's that come out of her mouth.
Didn't just give us Roman and Greek myths but Indian, Asian, S. American and C. American as well. The hero myths were the best and interestingly connected to comics and science fiction.

FOR BEING HEAD OF THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT SHE SOMETIMES DOES NOT REALLY KNOW WHAT SHE IS SAYING. SHE IS A GOOD TEACHER BUT GETS A LITTLE OFF TOPIC SOMETIMES AND SAYS UUUUHHHH AND UUUUMMMM SO SO SO MUCH...I COUNTED IT WAS OVER 25OX'S IN 1 CLASS PERIOD (HEE HEE)
She was an awful teacher. I felt so lost that I had to drop her class and take it again later.

I didn't think I'd pass Engl 67 during summer but I did. SHe makes grammar understandable, what we wrote about was interesting, and she give writing a structore that students can follow.

This is my 3rd class with her, and today was the first time in my life I have ever gotten an A on an English paper.
She is one of the worst teachers ever. Assigns a ridiculous amount of reading at once and doesn't teach. All we do is group work every class. Really strict with attendance. Is very vague about what's on exams and papers. There's no real direction when she teaches. DON'T TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES!
Most of my english teachers haven't really explained what I did wrong on my papers. If you go to her office and go over the paper with her, she explains everything and then gives you some things to try to improve for the next one.
I like the various readings from different cultures. She prepares us for the exams with group work. The creative writing assignment was better than the usual literary analysis paper.
She can say a million 'uh's" and is very unclear even when you ask for help. Her tests are really unreasonably hard that covers a lot of reading assignments. all we did was classwork and when she lectures she just reads from the book. she drove me nuts that i ended up withdrawing from her class. Whatever you do, don't take her.
I recomend u dont take her cause u have to do really good on the tests & writing in order to pass she gives alot of hwk u have a quiz everyday no xtra credit a lot of writing to do u must have your book to understand the class
It's a mystery why its so hard to understand what she says. She doesnt do it on purpose but... Her lectures erm... No... Lets just say I can't quite figure out why its so hard to understand what she says.
I think this class is hard because even if you do well on test, it won't help if you don't do well on your essay.
love the class in general, but she was very unclear, when you asked for help, she gave the runaround, TAKE THE CLASS, BUT WITH ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
essays in 3rd person point of view only!!! Replaces lowest essay if final one is higher. Difficult professor. She helps in the highering process of other professors and also in enlgish placement. Quiz almost everyday. Need to buy scantrons and essay blue books.
This professor is bad for the college. THere is testemonial that she performs less effective and is helpless. Plz note that she is making the Engl language less intresting, and that is unluck since it is the first Engl credit class.

This is the worst teacher ever, and I would like one to rethink before he gets into hardship, she gives less attention to the class and the way she presents lesson is inconsistence. She says that her high school daughter corrects the papers, WTF. Don't forget that she is also rude and and freaks out, with no patience what so ever.
THis prof. is absolutely the worst i'v ever had. She is so horrible at teaching. all she does is talk about her life and says um a LOT. LIsten, if it means taking an extra semester of college to aviode her, DO IT. the only upside to her is that she emails a lot. other than that, i sit in class hoping everydy that she falls on her fat as and leaves

This Class Was not easy. But I did learn a lot of things that have helped me out in future english classes. An overall good but difficult professor.

OK,so I guess I'm the only person who enjoyed her class. She is not that difficult,just show her you want to succeed and you will!Review the homework before you complete it and you'll do just fine!Her quizzes are VERY EASY if you do the homework,but the purest of p0n@ge if you don't.She answers her emails MORE THAN DAILY! If YOU care,SHE will care!
Tough grader/strict on attendance. The grammer and research paper workshops helped in doing the research in steps and made it easy to understand, unlike my last teacher who said its explained in the book. Liked the topics the LA times. Didn't like in-class essays at first, but she really helped me when i was stuck on what to do.
Great professor! A little tough but very helpful. If you ask for help, she will help. Essays were okay. Reasearch paper done in 7 steps makes it easier. Grammar is BIG. Make sure you can form complex, compound, and complex-compound sentences.

One of the worst teacher I've ever taken
Very strict grading, but involved in the students when they showed interest. She always helped when students asked questions. emailing her is even better for her, and some times get a more detailed answer in the emails. she uses emails constantly. She's as interested in your grade as you are, good or bad.
I HATED her. worst english teacher. did NOT help me with anything. if you hate writing, do not take. NEVER helped me. BLAH!!
Professor Garrett is a bright woman that knows what she's talking about, but I wouldn't recommend her. When proof reading essays she tends to overlook errors the first time so for the final draft has corrections that should have been caught the first time, She can also be abrasive in her opinions.

VERY GOOD teacher. have taken her twice because i liked the way she teaches. does the research paper in steps and makes it easier. but she marks down for being late, but thats all that is bad about her. shes very helpful

She is a really unfair professor. Dont take her clase. she gave feedback on every assiment but you could not understand what she trying to say. It is really hard to see her handwriting.
Everyone has their own opinion about teachers. Everyone learns in different ways... But proffesor Garrett can lecture all day through a powerpoint. (Too fast to take notes!) And the essays that she assigns are due that same day, in 2 hours. I guess she expects for everybody to know the the course.
She is very strict on her grading of papers, it seems as if she expects everyone in this course to be literature majors. The matching exams ask for minor character's actions, while the written exams ask for a full detailed synopsis of the myths. She once asked a student, "How did you get an 'A' on this exam?" She asks a lot from students.
WOW What can I say but If you want an F, Take her class and I'M not a lazy student saying this, I had a 3.5 before I took her class, I would have dropped out but I needed the units so now I'M stuck with the hardest D, I ever worked for. One Word "RIDICULES!"
LOOKOUT! If you're bad at English and have a hard time writing a complete paper, don't take her! If you're good at English and have great writing skills, then she's for you. GOOD LUCK!
DON'T EVER TAKE HER!!!!! I cannot believe she ever became a teacher. She never teaches nor helps you understand the readings. All you do is group work. When asked a question she avoids it and aswers with someting not relating to what you asked. Quizzes every week. Tons of reading. Says "umm" all day long. Makes no sense what so ever. DON'T TAKE HER
Tough teacher to impress. She's arrogant and looks down at you if you don't put in decent effort. Sends continual emails and expects you to read them in time. She's almost always serious and awkwardly quiet sometimes. I would not suggest her.
I agree with everyone this teacher is hard and i would also not suggest anyone to take her I should of also dropped when i had the chance right now im bearly surviving but i have a feeling that im not going to end up doing so good in this class. once again I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HER TO ANYONE!
I have struggled so hard to try and pass Mrs. Garrett's class, but all she cares about it is that you have to be SUPER perfect on writing a solid essays she wants to see. I kept getting help from the writing center and she graded me a D instead. Avoid her!
Go to class! All homework is online which is good and bad because the computer grades it and it has to be 100% correct. Do not try to take notes just pay attention she goes way to fast. Essays are kind of difficult passed with a C barely not recommended but can be passed
I am a A student and I got a D in her class I do not get D's. She is the worst teacher I have ever taken in my life. I was really close to getting a C, but she basically has that its my classroom my rules. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS. IT IS A WASTE OF MONEY. VERY DISAPPOINTED.
If you want to get you ass kicked, but then saved later because of her teachings, then take her class.
Taking Garrett's class made me feel like I learned nothing! She expected me to write a very solid and complete essay. But hey, I'm not perfect! I ended up dropping the class since she graded me nothing but Ds & Fs. I would totally drop her class if you're struggling. If you stay, then you're asking for more trouble.
Don't take her. She's inappropriate, has horrible teaching techniques and says UM after EVERY WORD. For someone who is "well established" and so "intelligent" you would think she could get through a sentence without saying UM. She treats you like a 1st grader... and I was in her Honors class. Never again.
I've learned so much from Prof. Garrett. I started off getting D's and F's on my essays but with her help, I ended up getting A's and B's. She assigns lots of homework online too. She does say "um" a lot but overall, i thought she was very helpful and my writing skills are so much better now.

I took her for English 68, and man was this class very tough. Luckily, I managed to pass with a C, but still, she was hardly as helpful to me.

I hated this class. She put my GPA to shame! She's super strict, expects everything to be flawless. She will even look down on you if you don't do it right. Don't waste your time.

Not easy, but, man, you'll know your stuff coming out of this class. Go to class, do your work, take advantage of her office hours, and you'll be okay. Assignments and expectations are clear. You get what you put into this class. Very helpful.
NOT FUN AT ALL, if you are not a an honors class english writer dont take her class!! HARDEST D I EVER HAD TO WORK FOR. By the end of the semester there were only 4 students left including myself. She does expect you to know how to write and will look down on you if you are not good at writing. She gives out spelling and grammar test a lot too.
She does not use the book, all she does is give out quizzes and online homework, she is VERY VERY hard to understand, does not like to meet outside of class at all

This teacher was one of the hardest teachers I've ever taken. She does not help when you need her. Her teaching method was not good for me. Her grading is very hard. She is very blunt and sometimes to opinionated! Did not like her at all!
Beware of Jean Garrett. she's beyond tough non-stop quiz and online homework. she's the reason why i got a w on my transcript
prof garrett is a phenomenal teacher. all of these mt sac students coming straight from high school expecting to put forth the same effort to receive the same grade are seriously in shock when coming across a teacher like her. if you reach out to her, you will be assisted. if you put forth adequate effort, you will learn more than you ever imagined

There is a lot of work to do in this class (daily homework, quizzes, in class essays). Everything has to be done a certain way or it is considered wrong. She may be a tough prof., but whatever she teaches you actually sticks. You do not forget the lessons she teaches. Your writing greatly improves and prepares you for ENG1A.

She is a strict professor. All you do in that class were in class essays and quizes . Her lessons were not helpful and she has students she likes more than others.She is rude and I wouldn't recommend anyone to take this class, u will REGRET IT. This is the hardest class u could ever take and its not even a high level class.
Very strict and need to be on top of things but is fair.
Pertaining to her argument papers. She provides elementary school examples when you are taught all the logical fallacies. Then she gives you an advanced essay and expects you to be able to comprehend the fallacies in the essay. She likes to confuse her students and does not provide the best feedback.
Winter section had 23 classes, she gave us 13 quizzes and 8 in classes writing, so it means she did not teach us a lot in class.

FREAKEN HARD!!!!! I mean, its understandable (since it is college) but you're not college material if you can't understand everything she's lecturing about.
I honestly think she is amazing. If you're willing to actually do the work, show up, and try you are more than likely to pass the class. However, if you don't do the homework you're screwed. She can seem intimidating but if you can get passed that she willing to help her students during her office hours I recommend her if you can work hard
She's an awesome professor who really cares about her students and wants them to do well. She was like the aunt I never had. Really take advantage of her office hours! And don't fall behind on the online homework! Always ask for help as well! She will help you with anything you have trouble with! Also don't be late to class! Attendance counts!
online quiz is fustrating
had her this winter intersession. She didn't delve into each subject as much as I think we needed her to. When learning to write essays/etc we would basically read paragraphs (with too little "info"), outline it, and write it. Didn't learn any helpful skills that I didn't already know. Attendance and online quizzes help a lot! (if you get 90%+)
Took her this past winter, her class is not difficult as long as you do all of the homework. Essays are a bit of a challenge. Not a lot of info to work with. She is very strict when it comes to outlines and essay structure but it is not impossible, most of my essay grades were A's and B's. AS long as you do EXACTLY what she says, you will do well.
She's a hard grader and the online hw sucks okay, whenever you get one question wrong she will ask you to email her to let her redo it for you again so you have to email her everytime you you want to change your answer online. It sucks and there's also a lot of reading too.
