Amazing teacher
Great teacher, seems like a great person too. Feminism all the way.
i've never learned so much in my life!
Fantastic Teacher!! Very intelligent. Great role model for young women. Awesome!

If you are a middle class white male LOOK OUT!! Her rhetoric gets a little tiresome. Anything you thought was sacred as a child ie; Walt Disney gets thrown out the window. Have fun.
fantastic role model for young women. Very articulate. Great ability to relay information. Should be more prof's like her.
More like Socialismiology. But in all fairness, a good prof. Doesn't put up with student babble, banishes political correctness in favour of truth and understanding. She's biased but doesn't hide it. Keep that in mind and you'll learn a lot.

Leave your innocence at home and be prepared for a barrage of straight up, real world, ideas. Very helpful and passionate about her work. Her tests can be kinda sketchy but very good teacher.
!?
Unbelievably interesting! Very fair and inspiring
Jean is an excellent teacher and extremely is knowledgeable. Her passion for sociology and its theories is forthcoming and refreshing. She has quite a strong personality and is somewhat strict in her classroom etiquette. She will teach you about yoursel
Waay too much rhetoric detracts from learning. Not open to being challenged. Can be rude and dismissive, particularly with women. Exams are poorly worded. Needs to tone down the ball-breaking feminism. It detracts from her depth of knowledge.
Girl Power!
Overall, great prof! She knows her stuff and explains things well. Her marking is fair. Offers additional help if asked. She's really one of the few good professors left out there. Taking her class was inspiring!
AWESOME TEACHER!! very clear...very strong willed...quite enjoyed this class.
I think the only people who wouldn't enjoy this class would be men who can't handle feminism. Girl power is right! This lady is powerful and amazing as a teacher. You'll want to go to her classes, promise! Fun fun fun!

She's a great prof. Get's a lot of flak for her hard approach to students, but she's very knowledgable, interesting and conscientious. very smart woman.
Awesome prof...stayed true to herself and made intro to sociology fun...definitely will take more sociology courses in the future and would recommend anyone for her class
Very enjoyable lectures...this prof is pure jokesssss...comes off as a hardass but is very fair and gives everyone a chance...was my favourite class...if you attend lectures the exams don't seem that hard, in addition to reading the material which she selects well, it was related to what we were learning and was not too heavy...SWITCH TO HER CLASS
Cool Prof. Strict but Nice and Fair. Very interesting class.
I ran screaming from the course. I was in my last semester and thought about not graduating in June and taking a course in the summer because most other classes were full and I absolutely did not want to be in her class. She is rude, ignorant, disrespectful and the list goes on. Made this known to upper teaching staff.
She's a good teacher and really knows her stuff....true feminist. She makes the class interesting, her tests can be tricky so make sure you do the readings. Overall I enjoyed her class.
Honestly i love Jean. I came into this course not taking any sociology classes and now this class has truly become my favourite class thus far. She makes it really interesting. Definately an EYE OPENER class. Her tests are easy if you just read the reader and her notes from class (which summarizes everything from the reader).
My favourite professor. I never missed her class even if I was super sick because I loved it so much. If she ever decides to leave teaching she should go into stand up comedy. She had me in stiches.
Great teacher! Makes the material very interesting. Exams apply to everything learned in the class/textbook. Go to class because a) its enjoyable b) you learn alot and Jean Golden is a really great prof!! :)
The class isn't that bad. I don't really enjoy her as a prof though. At first I thought she was okay, but she just doesn't sit well with me.
Knows her stuff really, really well... but assigns too many readings- it's just plain unrealistic.
i love this woman. i had her last year for soc, and ppl in my program are still talking about what an amazing prof she is. leaves an impact on her students
she definitely tells it like it is! she is fair and blunt and definitely jokes. she might come across as mean and offensive but she's nice underneath it all. sometimes she's hard to follow but its all in the text book anyway so if you ever do go to this class its def a good time :)
I absolutely loved Jean Golden. I'm not in her class anymore and miss her. She tells it like it is, her in class demonstrations are fun and although the first bit of it may seem boring at first the second bit is a lot of fun because of the topics we address. If i could take another course with her I would not hesitate. I approve of her!!!(Y)
I found that she definitely assigned too many readings and didn't explain questions on them very well. The presentation was extremely difficult, every couple of minutes she will interject with her own ideas or simply tell you you are wrong. I am not a fan of her personally, but she wasn't a bad prof.
Excellent
I love Jean! Had her last year all year and then took a summer class with her. She is stick but fair. If you do the readings and attend her lectures you will do great. I went to her classes and never wanted to miss any of them because they were so interesting. She bought our entire class pizza last year when she won an award!!!! Best professor I ha
Had her last year all year and then took a summer class with her. She is stick but fair. If you do the readings and attend her lectures you will do great. I went to her classes and never wanted to miss any of them because they were so interesting. She bought our entire class pizza last year when she won an award! Best professor I have ever had!!!!!
One of Jean's main strengths is provision of information. As a social work student, I found that the lens through which she 'taught' the UN was very Western-centric. However, she is great at providing nuts and bolts information. SW students: beware. She loves control, and works from the white "west is best" feminist paradigm we often critique.
she is a great prof. The course makes you learn so much new things. She is a easy marker. There is one group presentation, choose your members wisely!
She made the theory very interesting with her use of videos. The in class assignments were free marks. I will definitely take another course with her!
Jean is an AMAZING prof. She makes her lectures so interesting, and she isn't afraid to speak her mind. I would love to have her as a professor again!
Very strict, but fair. Her lectures are interesting, she is a very good teacher. Definitely keeps you engaged. My favourite class, for sure.
Strict, but she knows her stuff, though I don't agree with her opinions. But she's clear, concise and the exams are straightforward. Very good!
just amazing. strict but I love this class, very clear, very effective
An exceptional prof who takes a lot of time out of her schedule to help. She is strict but with a class of 200 mostly bored first years, I believe she has to be. Loved the class and look forward to taking more with her.
At first I didn't know what to make of her but now I believe she is a force of nature. She uses all kinds of multimedia, identifies exactly what she's going to test on, and gives many smaller assignments to boost your mark if you need it. She is meticulous about posting grades so you always know where you stand. Will take more courses with her!
Professor Jean is great at what she does. At first I found her a bit intimidating and still kinda do but her lectures are good. Always interesting. She keeps you engaged with interesting information and facts about the topics we study to the point that even if you haven't studied that much for a test you would still be able to put something down.
she's an amazing prof. definitely recommend taking one of her classes if the opportunity arises.
Not very friendly
Initially, I was quite intimidated of her . However, I learned alot from her class. As long as you go to class and do the readings you'll succeed. She repeats alot of the material which is very helpful for the exams. I finished the class with a 90 in the end :)
Amazing prof. Powerpoints are extremely helpful, and she interacts with students, she wants us to succeed! barely used the textbooks, just went to class and did really well! she seems intimidating at first, but when you go see her she is awesome to talk to! definitely taking more classes with her!
Awesome Professor! Really wants her students to do well. Always willing to talk to students outside of class and very helpful. Responds promptly to emails. Cares about sociology and the world. Very Inspirational.
Limited grasp of historical events and sensationalizes to a great extent. Nice person as long as you are not a white male. Does not respond to dissent or disagreement well. Easier to just keep your views to yourself.
One of the best professors at Ryerson University.
One of the best profs EVER!! REally interesting, fun yet valuable lectures!
LOVED HER! ONE OF THE BEST PROFS I"VE EVER HAD! She's intimidating at first, but once you get to know her you'll love her! She knows her stuff and loves sociology! She'll try to her best to work around your schedule and help to the best of her abilities! Don't drop her class because she intimidates you! Her classes are fun and intriguing .
Very inconsiderate to students whether in the access centre or just in general. Very rigid personality; not tech savvy which runs in to problems. Doesn't use turnip in but loses assignments and gives zeros. Inconsistent with marking as she uses graders. Strict on academic integrity and ethics but doesn't follow them herself.
The hardest part of this class is sitting through really offensive and triggering lectures. She will single people out individually and disprove their alternatives to her material. However, you really don't need any textbook past the first few classes; the rest is just straight from lecture. Handouts are ideal to bring. Specific & easy assignments.
She may seem scary and intimidating, and she is, but she may be one of the best and nicest prof you may come across. If you ever have her for one of your classes, you're lucky! Take advantages of her office hours because she helps, A LOT with assignments.
Prof Golden is not very personable, but she is a good (albeit disorganized) teacher. She seems to be in a persistent bad mood and is extremely resistant to questions, use of office hours, and emails. However, if you attend lecture you will not only learn but truly understand all required information. Lecture notes are sufficient over readings.
Not very friendly at all. Assignments are easy. Has an obsession with being concise; don't write more than a sentence. XD Every assignment sheet she hands out are filled with typos and she's terrible with technology. Reads off slides for most lectures. Would not recommend taking her class unless you have to.
Hands down, best prof in all my uni career. She lectures so well and clear. Assignments are fun and easy. And they were a major help when it came to studying for midterm- which again was easy. She wants all her students to do well and was willing to work with them. Sadly, she will not be teaching anymore as she said last day of class. Great loss!
She is very helpful. She is very knowledgable about what she teaches and will not just use the text book to give examples.Classroom attendance is not high but i highly suggest it for maximum success. She gives relatively easy assignments, although they may be time consuming. I recommend the class because of how much i learned and how much i learned
Jean Golden is extremely intelligent, interesting and kind; an amazing woman. If people find her intimidating, I think it says more about them than it does about her.
Jean Golden is an amazing professor. Clearly went out of her way to make the lectures interesting and returns assignments in a reasonable manner of time. She can be a little intimidating but I find that helped spike my interest in the course. Overall I loved this course and Jean as a professor, would recommend.
She is amazing. Do the work exactly as she says and you will get an A. I got an A+ and even some 100% by just following her instructions. No reason to get a bad mark when she says exactly what she expects. Can be strict about talking. She makes lectures really interesting.
Loved this class
At first I didn't really like her, but once the course went on, I realized what a great professor she really is. Very inspirational and helpful. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS! Great help and massive brownie points
My favourite professor. I agree, she wasn't the most friendly per se but so knowledgeable and inspirational. She really makes you open your eyes to the world around you. Do EXACTLY what she says for assignments and you'll be fine.
Upon first impression Jean will seem really opinionated and mean. She gets so much better, she is EXTREMELY precise on what she wants so it's unlikely you can do badly in her course. She's basically just a really sassy feminist so you'll most likely leave this course enlightened.
So many laughs in this class. Knows how to keep students engaged. GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS FOR HELP, she is extremely kind and you will do so much better if you go! Dont get intimidated by her. her personality is one of a kind and she is just an amazing person over all. TAKE THIS COURSE!!! 10/10
She has a lot of biases. Her assignments are easy but VERY UNCLEAR and very vague so you would lose marks for stupid things because she never told you. Never really understood her powerpoint structure (filling in the blanks) and missing slides.. i really don't get why she couldn't post full slides so students don't focusing on filling in the blank
3 hour lecture of her just reading the slides aloud. Her slide structure is overwhelmed with info and very confusing. She's quite gruff and seemed genuinely annoyed when I went in for office hours. Assignments are INSANELY easy but the guidelines are scattered and unclear. If you can get past this, it will be the easiest A+ of your life guaranteed
Amazing Professor. Possesses years of experience. Always returns students' mail in couple of hours. Discusses and incorporates current world issues in her lectures. Fair grader. You will learn many things about human rights. I liked all her assignments. Highly recommended.
Loved all her lectures! She can be sometines intimidating and unreasonable to students though. Other than that, great prof and great lecture. Make sure you print her slides and write down all her examples!!! She is helpful during office hours!
Assignments are super easy. You may not even have a midterm (depending obv). It's "women and human rights" but no focus on feminism. Monotone voice that kinda makes you not want to be there. I had to buy 3 books. Recommend as an easy elective.
Jean is a good professor, it is extremely easy to do well in her class as she gives many easy assignments. Nevertheless, she's very specific with what she wants, so make sure you go to her office hours to go through your assignment with her, she gives great feedback!! She comes off a bit rude but it's nothing you can't handle. Fun class, but long.
This professor is amazing. She is a little intimidating, but is alway there to help. She makes lectures very interesting and her assignments are fairly easy. The mid-term and the final are all MC, but are doable. She gives a lot of easy assignments based on movies which can boost up your mark.
Jean is super intimidating but means well and is there for students. Assignments are easy if you pay attention to what's being asked. If you're unclear, she'll practically give you the answers if you come for her office hours. Her lectures are engaging and she uses multimedia. Readings are only mildly necessary. Her notes are fill-in-the-blanks.
Jean really does use her knowledge to help students while theyre in class and after. She does come across as a little scary and she knows that but deep down she really is a kind hearted teacher. Do exactly what she asks for even if it seems like its too little. Two sentences means two sentences. Attend class and youll be fine
Jean Golden is an amazing professor. Never missed a class, and it was an 8AM class. Honestly loved going to this class. My favourite class of the semester. Jean always kept me engaged in class. She gave great examples to help you understand her lectures and slides better. I would definitely want to take another class taught by her.
Jean is funny, but kind of rude. Respect her and she will respect you. Classes are interesting!
Disregard the below two reviews, as they are about a man, clearly not Jean Golden. Jean is very upfront, there is no BS allowed in her class. She has a wealth of knowledge in the field of sociology, and facilitates interesting class discussions. Her classes are not too difficult, and she is very clear with what she expects. I would recommend!
She may be unapproachable but she certainly knows her stuff. This class can be crazy depressing so only take it if you're prepared to see how screwed up society really is. As for text books, don't bother with Naiman, any material you miss from there will be covered in class, but be sure to get the course reader, you will fail without it.
The prof is unapproachable, and pretty rude. But the course itself is very easy and straight-forward. Grading is fair, and the exams are really clear. As long as you do the readings, you'll be good.
Jean is a really great prof, she can teach this class with her eyes shut. Was a bit intimidated at first, but that passes by after a few classes. Her lectures are great, gives great exam reviews, and midterm & exam were fair IF you study. There's an easy 10% if you complete 4 movie assignments and gave the class a 1% bonus assignment. Ended with A-
Good lectures, fill in the blank PP handouts. A lot of videos played. Sometimes hard to follow along the handouts. Midterm and Exam are all mc and truefalse. There were 2 textbooks used (easy readings). No laptops nor electronics allowed in classroom, she makes that clear before first lecture. Learned a lot about how messed up society really is.
A handful of years ago I took 2 summer courses with Jean. At first, she didn't seem to be a fan (I am a guy) and seemed standoffish but I was able to win her over through respect. Her teaching materials are interesting and informative. Some of the most memorable classes taken at Ryerson and from time and time I think about her classes. Cool lady.
Up to date class, with lots of visuals and great information
Jean is such an inspiring prof. Never really understood why people didnt like her that much. Yeah, she's straight forward as hell but I liked that about her! Her lectures are very interesting. Exams and assignments are very easy and straightforward. I really enjoyed her class first year. Take her class if you get the chance
My all time favorite professor at Ryerson, took 3 courses taught by her. She is very inspirational!
Really love this professor, her lectures are always very interesting, engaging and inspirational!
Excellent professor!
Her assignments were basic and easy, and her lectures were amazingly informative. She doesn't allow laptops or phones, but posts blank slides for you online to print and fill out instead, although sometimes there could be gaps that made it confusing. She definitely knows what she's talking about but can be a little scary and unapproachable.
go to her office hours and you will get an easy A
Jean is an amazing prof, she can come off intimidating but she's very inspirational and passionate about sociology ! Ask questions and try your best on all your assignments and you'll do good. Make sure to watch the movies she assigns and don't worry so much on textbook readings.
I loved having Jean Golden as a professor! Her note slides she provides us with can sometimes get confusing and mixed up when she lectures but other than that she is very straight to the point and tells you exactly what will be on the exam! She is also very inspirational and definitely knows her stuff. Wouldn't mind having her again!
She was definitely my favourite prof this semester! Though she may come off as intimidating, you will learn that she cares a lot about the course as well as the students. Her slides are concise and have a lot of visuals, which help a lot! Though it is encouraged to read the textbooks, it was not necessary! Her office hours were also really helpful!
Jean Golden is so nice, her lectures are great and she is extremely helpful during office hours. I recommend this class because she makes it fun. I would take this class again if I could.
The course was required and gave a good introduction to sociology. Expect lots of little grades. 2 assignments, a mid-term, 4 film assignments, final exam and a bonus assignment. If you go to every class and pay attention you should do fine. Assignments can be tricky so be sure to ask lots of questions to find out what she expects.
A lot of assignments that are fairly simple if you read carefully and ask questions. Jean is a straightforward person, which made her class even more enjoyable. She definitely knows her stuff and is a very inspirational person. Both the mid-term and exams were MC and T/F. She provides a detailed review of both tests. SOC 111 was overall great!
Textbook is not really needed. Great Prof. A little intimidating. Posts slides before class. No laptops allowed for notes. Assignment heavy (but they're all easy). Easy A if you do all your assignments. A lot of bonus grades given. Tests are kinda a little tough. All M/C & T/F and are written trickily. She is passionate about sociology.
Covers everything in exam, lots of homework for smaller precentages, speaks well at lectures, strict, but willing to go over assignments with you.
Jean was a great professor. She can be intimidating but is nice & caring. Visit her office hours and you'll get great feedback on your assignments. The exam was all multiple choice & true/false but it was written very sneakily (made you second-guess a lot). Assignments are pretty straight forward & somewhat easy. Overall, she was a good professor.
Jean was my favourite professor of the term. Her blunt and honest personality made her a very enjoyable prof although it seems disliked by many students. Assignments are weighted heavily but are very easy. Very intriguing lectures that are up to date and touch on current events. Debates are handled in a respectful manner.
Jean is very passionate about sociology. She is super blunt and likes to argue her point in class. It's her way or the highway so to speak. There was a multiple choice exam which was super tough and about 6 or 7 assignments, four of which are movie assignments. You should definitely show up to each lecture. Be ready to get told what to think.
If you are confused by her assignments GO TO OFFICE HOURS. She will be SO helpful if she sees you put time in trying to figure it out. Exam was tricky and based a lot on the readings.. Make sure to know dates, and random small detaills. General concept wont be enough. She is standoffish but dont take it personally, she means well.
She's an interesting character, kind of aggressive if you decided to challenge her or even just ask a question. Very opinionated. Lectures are enjoyable though with opportunity for sharing and participation. Study a bit and its easy to do well.
This was a unique course based in the Bahamas in which we volunteered at a school for people with disabilities. Jean was incredible at organizing all the logistics and caring for our group of students. The work was reflective, collaborative, and incredibly rewarding. Definitely take the chance to get to know Jean at her office hours
At the beginning, Jean did seem to be a little intimidating, but as the semester progressed, she became less intimidating. She was such a great prof and had such great stories to tell and share. She is an easy marker and gives easy assignments. There was an in-class exam, that was T/F + MC, that was a little difficult (based on readings and videos)
Jean is an inspirational woman who puts her heart into what she teaches. She hosts a strong and fierce personality for a woman and this shouldn't be anything to feel intimidated by. She's incredibly knowledgable and wants her students to succeed. A lot of easy assignments, moderately difficult exam and interesting lecture content. 10/10 class.
Jean Golden was one of the best professors I've had at Ryerson. Although she may seem intimidating at best, she truly does care about her students. She is extremely wise and knowledgable on a number of diverse topics. Her final was difficult, however, her lectures and personal charm make it all worthwhile. I sincerely am grateful to have had her.
Jean is awesome!!!! At first I wasn't a fan, but that's because she is very straight forwards. She might come off as rude or intense, however after a few weeks with her you'll realize that she's just super experienced and doesn't have time to waste. I honestly love this prof and would take the course again.
Don't bother doing the first few readings, as only the last couple are on the exam. The two assignments were VERY easy and if you go to office hours you will get an A. The exam was quite challenging, so just study the review very well and focus on the textbook. Don't buy the 1% book, it's a waste of money!! Jean is a good prof.
Jean was intimidating at first but quickly became one of my favourite profs. She's willing to assist during office hours and provides good feedback. It's easy to do well on her movie assignments bc of their simplicity. Final was harder than expected, lots of long readings and you could get by without the 1% book she recommends. Interesting class!
Jean can be intimidating at first, but she's a very caring professor and an amazing lecturer. Her assignments were very easy, however the exam was a bit tricky. If you do your best on the written assignments, show up for the extra participation marks later on in the course (she tells you when), it'll be easy to get an A despite the exam.
She was the best prof I had. She looks strict and hard but she is actually very caring. Her assignments were very easy. I wish I could take all my classes from her.
Loved professor Golden. She was very engaging in lectures and the content was fairly straightforward. Didn't have to do all the readings and still got a good grade as the slides had important info for exam. There was a midterm, participation marks but mostly short assignments where you watched vids or read articles and answered short questions.
Very interesting profs. Gets you to engage with discussions in class. Overall, a wonderful professor.
Dr Golden is very kind especially accommodating student's concern. She's always there for office hour and teaches you how to improve on your assignments.
Professor Golden is one of my favorite professors I have had in my first year so far. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She cares a lot about her students well-being and mental health. She gives extensions as needed and truly cares about her work. I really enjoyed being in her class!
She's very reasonable and all of a kind in the Sociology department. She always try her best to help students during her office hour arrangements.
Jean is a hidden gem and gives us amazing sociology lectures weekly.
Professor Golden is a great prof for Sociology. She goes at a reasonable pace during Zoom meetings and always engaging. She is very caring also highly recommended!
Very sweet and understanding prof. Always there for you if you reach out, she even offers extensions under certain circumstances (but don't use that as an excuse smh). She is a very tough cookie, and has good knowledge of the world. She really opens your eyes to things!
Professor Golden is the most caring prof I ever had at Ryerson. She would always ask if the class if we understand the material during the weekly Zoom meetings. In any case, she puts student as top priority and thus, her assignments are reasonable and informative. I truly learned a lot from Professor Golden and wish to take a course with her again!
Super understanding prof that always cooperates with students in regards to deadlines. Assignments are very interesting and relate to real life. She is a very knowledgeable and kind prof. A true gem!
Seems intimidating at first, but is just very determined and passionate, not mean. Is very accommodating and considers what students like best. Posts lectures online. Assignments are so straight forward and relevant. She makes it very clear what she is asking. Assignments do not test on nit-picky details, just overarching concepts in the lectures.
The material isn't hard, but the professor is. For an introductory sociology course, she needs to chill out. I don't know why she has good reviews.
Jean is the worst professor I ever met in Toronto Metropolitan University. She keeps conflict with herself.... and the she is a tough grader at the assignment..........
She's so opinionated and paranoid. She acts like you're challenging her and her authority even if you ask a question. Weird, good luck
Jean is one of the worst professors I've had at this university, but the material isn't hard.
The content is interesting and easy, but she is a very strong character that is not open to criticism and questions. Office hours are not always available, if she believes the assignment is easy she will not provide them. Very paranoid about people recording her and passive agressive comments, feedback and communicarion. Would never reccomend. RUN.
The course content is very interesting and she does an excellent job teaching the materials. She is very knowledgable and is open to share her personal experiences, which makes the class more engaging and fun. She is also empathetic and supportive, and is always encouraging her students to reach their full potential.
When you ask her a question, she asks as if you are challenging her. Quite picky/specific on what she wants on assignments. I held back on sending emails because of the attitude. The overall reviews are great, but it seems she was different for the online times. DO not take her because you will never have the clarification you need.
Professor Golden wants students to do well. She seemed invested in helping by offering meetings outside of class to go over assignments & exams. She was easy in regards to being relaxed about attendance due to illness and personal life circumstances. She graded fairly and gave lots of optional bonus assignments to bring up grades. She is a legend!
Weird. Does give some "bonus" assignments. Difficult teacher, will think you are testing her with anything you say. Has a weird obsession with technology its like she's scared of it. Anyway, you'll pass, but end up so annoyed with the class. Good luck!
Good luck.
lenient on deadlines and pretty easy course material and testing.
Yes, she can seem intimidating but she really wants all students to do well. I took every opportunity to meet via zoom for assignment help/feedback and she literally guided me through every assignment. Not much profs would do that at all. You can do really well in her class, you just have to be willing to do extra work!
Was so glad to be done with this class. Course material isn't hard, but the teacher is really challenging. Don't care too much about her useless "feedback" and comments, and you'll be fine. Good luck!
Only good thing about the class was that there was a good distribution of percentages for multiple assignments. That being said, Jean makes it very hard to want to go to her class...
Literally drop or swap if she's teaching you.
Prof seems to have a very big ego. Course material is easy, but she'll probably try and twist your words or contradict herself- so honestly grading is super unpredictable.
