Excellent comprehension in this class. I highly recommend~friendly and NICE
No Comments
I loved her class! she explains everything in detail!
Really fun to hang with, and a nice person who makes time for her students!
cool class! shes extremely EASY GOING!
Very straight-forward, would take anouther class from her
Not at all intimidating, and a very easy marker
lets you rewrite essays
Very nice lady. Willing to accomdate the needs of the students. Loved the class
Kind person, a little out there sometimes, overall one of the best english profs
Awesome prof! Really down to earth and clear about everything.
has approximate due dates-yay! long slow lectures, but fairly easy
good prof but takes about 2 weeks to hand back essays!
Very nice lady. Helpful, and considers the student, will take another class.
kinda quircky. interesting lectures.
rewrite every essay!
Very spinny, doesn't listen to students, only her answers are right, don't learn very much, nice time to do homework
Quite boring, but really nice and good marker, lenient with due dates, good overall
Awesome professor!! She actually wants to see her students succeed. I would HIGHLY recommend her!!!
Really good teacher!!! Very helpful and a very nice lady. I highly recommend her to everyone!
Awesome prof...I definitely recommend her to everyone..she is nice, marks pretty easy....is very helpful, looks at essays b4 you have to hand them in.
Very interesting material, very knowledgeable, very understanding, very helpful! Great Lady! Definately recommend taking Eng 110 with her!
Class material was a bit sketchy, but I guess she was okay. She definately marked easy.
Excellent! She is very helpful..willing to read your essays and give pointers before u hand them in! She marks quite easy too.
She's really good,everthing's easy in her class,nice prof.Highly recommanded
Changed one word in an essay and got a 5% mark raise... kind of arbitrary marking. If she couldn't find something wrong with an essay she'd make something up. Really scatterbrained but a nice enough person.
She was easy to understand and lets you know what she wants on essay's and assignments. The only hard part was the grammar test.
awful, only her opinion counts and you have to know what she is thinking to get a good grade. class material was sooooo boring.
Her class is really enjoyable. You always know what she expects of you and she is very open and respectful of her student's opinions. She's very approachable and understanding, when it comes to problems with assignments or with attending class.
good prof! she lets you revise your essays for a better mark, which helps alot! i dont like the course material though...but i recommend her
She is a great english prof. I am horrible at essays, but in her class the lowest mark ive gotten on one is a 75. She lets you know what she expects and helps you with things u need to work on, very approachable. Highly reccomend her.
For the comments that say she is really easy, I think she might have gotten harder this year. Alot of people find her class difficult, including myself, and ironically, I did the best on the grammar test.
Good prof. She only got her master degree though by the time she taught me. Duno about now. Grammar test is easy. Duno why some people found it hard. Don't u speak English?
Pretty easy marker but dont expect any extra advice...I emailed her 4 times asking for advice, she never replied, she even took an old essay of mine to review and never emailed me before the next one was due! She is scatter brained!
She is not the best dresser in the world, but she is super easy going. The lectures are.... boaring. You could sleep through the class and not miss anything. Fairly easy also. Very nice and has students best intrest in mind.
Well, if you are looking for a slack English class, Hillabold is the one to take it from. We do have to read 4 books... and write an essay on each book, but she does not care about due dates, and you can make changes to and re-submit your essays if you are not happy with the class. take it from her!
No due dates which is nice, but not stable on marking. Usually takes awhile to hand back assignments. 4 books to read and 4 essays to write. Cand re-subit your essay for a better mark. Longest 1h and 15min ever. Do not need to go to class to follow along.
Horrible marker. Doesn't tell you what she wants. Marks things without putting anything on it except for the mark. Highly feminist class, and she doesn't seem to mark highly for the guys from what i saw. I got 50% on the midterm and the final and i even read all the books. Horrible, Guys avoid.
I'm on the fence about her. Her marking was all over the map; not very inconsistant from one assignment to the next. She did let you resubmit essays, and that was nice. She didn't explain the quiz at all and everybody (at least around me) did poorly. The essays i received marks in the 80s,but on the final i only received a 60. how? i'll never know
Nice. flexible, depressing pieces of literature, really boring mind-numbing class. Grammar- well, forget it- impossible to comprehend her. Flexible about papers, due dates and a very nice person.
Very approachable. Although areas of improvement are sometimes sketchy (in regards to essays) the initial markings and comments usually make sense. Again, the best part is that she's very approachable...
The Announcement and how she's frequently late take up alot of class time, we all hate it!!
Easy assignments, books aren't bad... but oh god, seriously the worst lectures I have ever suffered. If you liked 6th grade English and watching a person write on the board for 20 minutes each class (not an exaggeration... invest in overhead paper, lady!) then, take this class! Meaningless and boring waste of money. Avoid unless you want a nap.

ok, listen...gender-based marking DOES happen and it's horrible...but in a feminist-lit class, i would guess that, as men, we might have to work harder...afterall, we are a big part of the perpetuation of inequality against women...i think jean is a great prof for any PERSON that really wants to grasp the intent behind the literature...
Available outside of class for help. Material to read wasn't very interesting. This class exposed how bad my writing is and it needs a lot of improvement. Now I know!
Marks quite hard on essays, but its no different than any first year english classes. The material that she teaches in class is easy. Attending this class isnt overly necessary. She loved to read random announcements at the start of every class which sometimes resulted in no lecture whatsoever. Overall I would recommend her for first year.
Very boring, not to bad marker thoguh
lets see... 15 mins late the first day... 35 minutes late the second day!!!! i am not impressed and kinda think i should get my money back because i am not paying for her to waste my time!!! I was on time and you should be too!!!!! 2006
For a English 100 class, i would recommend her, you dont really even need to go to class because it does you no good really. I went to class half the time and still managed a respectable mark. Her marking is very inconsistant but is approachable
late late late
Google her and look at her articles on the U of R website. Also check out her internet stories.Unique topics I suppose. This was an alright class, English can never be that exciting anyway.
Pretty good class overall, she's very quiet though, so I advise not sitting at the back of the class.
She was really good, one of the first english teachers I've ever liked.
All semester she let me write any/all of my tests late without loosing marks. She also let me hand in my essay late without loosing marks too!! First english teacher I have ever had that wasn't a hoe bag..SHES AWESOME!!
slllllllllack!!! take this class!!!
*SIGH* That is what I did every day I had to endure this class. She is very dull, and her course will appeal to a very limited audience. Though she may be passionate about Feminism, which is her course topic for 110, it is extremely boring and aggravating to sit through the same lectures every day, reading novels of no value. I love English, but th
She is a really nice lady. Pretty easy class, but the material is really not that interesting. All she does is talk the whole time, pretty boring but pretty slack.
She really gives you a chance to get a good mark, very helpful.
k so she's super boring! For eng 110 the way she marks essays is not fair at all. NO grading criterea! there are 4 novels and 4 essays. on the bright side u can rehand ur essays in for an extra 2-3%! avoid if u dont have to do eng 110!
This is a fairly easy class, considering that in most other 110 classes you would have to write three times the essays. I didn't read the books and still got an average of 75% on the essays. She can be interesting...but usually I had a hard time staying awake. Most of the lit is based on feminism, lesbianism and so on. Overall good PROF!
she is very feminist if you say about woman who abused ,she enjoyes. if you say women are on press and the sociaty is not fair . she give you high mark.if you have to write about her idea no your idea . her class is useless.i didnt learn anythings.i lost my self confident
She is a good prof who is easy to understand but the subject matter is quite boring. Some days we would just sit and read. She also likes to write on the board what most profs would just say out loud. Good teacher, decent marker, boring class.
slaaaack, but boring. she marks fairly easy and is very understanding about making up assignments you missed. after she corrects your essay and hands it back, you get to fix your mistakes and hand it in again for a better mark. you can also hand in essays late with no penalty. no need to go to class often. definitely take her class!
The class seemed really easy, but my mark dropped considerably after the final. She forgot to tell the class that we could use our books for the final until she handed it out to us. Overall she marks pretty easy, but repeats herself in class. Take it from her if you want an easy mark but don't want to learn anything.
Awful, mean spirited. Stay away!!!!!!!!
once you had in your essay, she marks it and hands it back and then you can re hand it in.. so on my essays i got 75 - 85.. so fairly easy.. but then you get to the final and you think you did really well and your mark drops like 7 percent?
The material was really dry and feminist. We read books about coming-of-age and lesbians... So not that fun. She was very helpful, essays could be late with no penalty and she would correct them ahead of time then let you re-submit them. But she was super-boring! Grading was easy. Take this class if you want an easy grade and no mental stimulation.
The nicest lady! Goes out of her way to help you succeed. The literature she picked was interesting (Frankenstein, Interview With The Vampire), with underlying feminist tones. Downside: Though what she says can be interesting, she is incapable of capturing interest! You don't have to attend regularly to get a good mark. Only 5 very short essays.
Awesome prof! She allows you to re-hand in your essays after you correct the mistakes she's noted for you, I got an average of around 75 on all my essays which is good (for me). all her quizzes are super easy, and you can easily get 100% on them if attend class and read the assigned stories and poems! grammer quiz is very hard though.
LOVE Hillabold. Rewrite essays, hand anything in late, she really helps you get a good mark. Grammar quiz is impossible, but it won't bring your mark down too much. Take her!
Jean is such a professional of her trade. She breaks down concepts in sentence structure and reading comprehension. Pace is class is a little trying but her opinions give perspective in the English arts. Opportunity to rewrite, assignments are fair to expectations. Jean is a good one to retake if you really want to perfect your writing fluidity.
Very great class, very easy but she, unlike other english teachers, isn't there to give you a bad mark. the 4 books we read were very good reads and here essays were max 500 words. The classes wern't stimulating since she just went over the books. tests were easy, and she is extremely flexible about due dates. highly recommend
Best english teacher ever? She doesn't expect you to be an English major, but she does expect you write better by the end of the class. She lets you redo every essay once. Always available after class in her office. Her classes usually fill up quick, so get her while its not full.
This class was quite boring. Attendance was in no way mandatory which was awesome. Her classes consisted of reviewing the book we had to read in extreme detail. If you did not read the book you could show up to class and get all of the information. On the flip side if you read the books it wasn't necessary to show up.
Being a "mature student", I found this class to be an excellent help in improving my writing skills. I found the classes to be interesting, not dull, and a challenge for one who has been out of University/school for a number of years.
I understand that this was her first time teaching Creative Writing, but was thoroughly disappointed in the class. We studied more grammar than critiquing each other's work. I would have rather had more class involvement and less teaching. On the other hand, there is no final.
I recommend this prof for English 100 if you want something easy. She is very flexible about due dates and lets you re-hand in essays for better marks. 5 essays total (1 in-class, 4 out-of-class), 1 grammar quiz, no midterm, easy final. She is also quite nice & approachable if you need help.
The class was easy if you actually read the books and go to class. she can be a little repetitive at times, but she explains the literature well.
Jean was extremely disorganized throughout this semester. She does not know how to use URCourses and is very hard to get ahold of. She taught more about grammar than about creative writing. She would assign something, but not teach us how to write that format. Very frustrating! No final, but is that worth it? Eh.
Very disorganized, was late for every class and NEVER had a plan. Also wasted most of the class hand writing everything on the board very small and no slides. She is incredibly knowledgeable but for a 100 level English class she should have been so much better organized.
Greatest prof I've had yet. You had to attend class to do well, but as long as you showed up and did the reading, it was smooth sailing. She always willing to give you extra feedback, and would help students one on one with papers. She isn't a grammar Nazi, nor a "Creative Flower", as she looks at everything logically. Best prof.
If you just want an easy English credit take her class. If you want to learn something try another professor. Her class was a waste of money and time.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME. The materials she asks you to read are interesting. ENGL100 4 essays and one grammar quiz ENGL110 3 essasy, 4 quizzes (on reading material) If you write your essays logically with proper grammar you do good. The best classes I have taken in University.
I recommend Hillabold for ESL students if you still need to take ENG100. She goes over grammar, which is a great review when getting back into writing. I found that she gave great feedback for essays, and her tests and quizzes never had surprise content.
I really love jean! She is a professor who seems to be really interested in grammar and enabling students write better. She is the only English professor that will allow you to submit your essay whenever (after due date). She seems to know people do bad in English, so she is really interested in anyway to help students get good grades! Awesome!
I loved loved loved Professor Hillabold! She's very understanding and aims at helping her students pass. She allowed us to revise our essays in hopes of a better grade and allowed late assignments. Her grammar quizzes were great, they helped me a whole lot personally. Definitely would recommend her. I'd go on and on about her honestly!!
ask for clarification, go to office hours after your first essay and let her explain exactly what shes looking for and you'll do really well on the essays.
If you want a good grade in her class, you have to work for it. Lots of grammar. Basically high school English all over again.
very hard marker, boring lectures. marks based on 4 essays, grammar quiz and final exam. I would find a different English prof.
I dont enjoy english but the material that she picked was intriguing and interesting enough. One in class essay and then 4 out of class essays along with a grammar quiz. She marks hard but shes always willing to explain how to write better essays. Very flexible with due dates. Attend class so you know what the essay topics are.
Jean is very kind and respectful toward her students. She wants to see you succeed. At some points, the lectures were not what the syllabus said we were supposed to be discussing, but stay on top of your readings and youll do fine. She also gives great feedback on essays and the grammar review in class was very helpful as well.
AVOID HER She does not follow the syllabus and her marking is really weird. I went to tutors, they said my essays were good but I got 65%... my final essay I added a part about sex and I got an 80%. She gives no clear criteria, due dates or reasons for your mark. Doesn't have office hours and is never at her office when she says she will be. AVOID!
She is good at what she does and knows what she's talking about. Gives great feedback on essays. Grammar quiz is difficult even though you get 3 tries and she's a little hard to reach outside of class. Be prepared to read a novel and write 4 essays. Easy class if you don't procrastinate and rush through everything. She is a fair marker!
She is a nice teacher who is willing to help you succeed in your studies. Although her grammar quizzes are impossible, she marks fairly on her essays and provides valuable feedback. She will also accept late assignments and sometimes she will ask you to hand in an assignment again because she occasionally loses them. Just work hard and you'll pass
She was interesting to listen to, though I did not feel like she really taught anything
Jean is a decent prof. She doesn't know how to use technology very well and is very hard to communicate with outside of class because of this. She takes a long time to return graded assignments and often loses them and asks you to re-send them. She is very knowledgeable and improves your writing skills though!
Jean is lovely person, but as a professor I would recommend. The grammar quizzes are impossible. She marks essays very hard and gives poor feedback to actually do better again. I would avoid, although she does do everything she can to make you pass.
Lots of essays and very boring lectures. She means will but you can pass without attending.
Loved Jean's class, she explains herself clearly in class and is a fair marker. If you hand in your essays in as paper copies I found she got them back to you relatively fast. I took her class at 8:30 in the morning and didn't attend every lecture and it didn't affect my overall grade.
Jean is a very nice person but she is a horrible prof. I did not take notes because there was nothing to write down. She goes on these tangents that have no relevance to course content and always end up with her talking about her past writings and publications. The good news? You literally never need to go to class. Bad news? Lots of assignments.
Jean is an OK Prof. however she does not seem to know what the rules and regulations of the English Department. She is not a big stickler on due dates which helps. However, she can be very indecisive and tends to confuse students. But if you follow along you should be OK.
Lots of work to do- Grading curve low
In my opinion, Ms. Hillabold is one of the worst teachers you will have. She is extremely indecisive which will make students confused, she shows up to her own class late and keeps students late, will not properly give you the information of the assignment due and will do this numerous times, and finally constantly blocks the blackboard.
Jean does not know how to be a prof. She literally won't explain the assignment's criteria until two days before it's due. She is absolutely unreachable outside of class. Don't email your assignments to her! She has lost two of my assignments now. She goes on 20 tangents within a lecture. However, she is very chill about due dates and attendance.
The most boring lectures, doesn't explain assignments-marks them harshly and takes forever to return. She also doesn't teach you how to improve in your writing skills but instead discusses things that are irrelevant to almost everyone's degrees. I actually learnt nothing in this course except that her grammar quizzes are hard and I don't like her.
Jean is okay. She is nearly impossible to reach outside of class and almost never responds to emails. The grammar quizes (given 3 attemps) are really difficult but do-able if you study a lot on your own time. Some classmates had a tough time recieving marks above 60% for essays. However, she is super relaxed when it comes to late assignments.
Her speaking volume is always so down. Her lecture is pretty hard to understand. Not reachable outside of classes. Good side is assignments doesn't have any deadline. So you can submit them by the end of semester.
Professor Hillabold is a very respectful instructor but lots of the material learned is on your own. We were assigned novels to read and write essays on. If you enjoy reading, she is a great prof to have
Most unorganized prof I have ever had. She is nice but shes just honestly not all there I dont think- doesnt teach you anything other than grammar, you learn based on your feedback AFTER handing in an assignment, not before you do it. Easy marker, flexible due dates. Didnt have a real syllabus though and terrible to reach outside of class. Srry
Jean is THE choice for English 100. I had to drop out of my last class... and Jean made my favorite subject FUN again. She isn't a hardcore, jaded, impossible to score over 60 marker. Her poem selection was interesting, and I loved the Starlight novel we read. The assignments and grading were clear and fair, and I ENJOYED my favorite subject.
Jean is a wonderful prof. She is very sweet and considerate when it comes to late papers. She isn't the greatest with technology so sometimes she takes her time, but overall she was a solid prof.
She will not respond to emails. She will not respond to phone calls. Good luck catching her after class because she'll run away. Most inaccessible professor I've ever had. No submission portals on UR services, so there is no telling whether she got your emailed assignment or not. Her teaching isn't related to the assignments. ALSO, HAS NO RUBRICS?!
A lot of emphasis on syntax and tenses, tough grader on essays, but she's a nice woman and I always felt like falling asleep in her class, but it may just be english classes in general lol. Conversation engager.
do not take. jean is a hot mess that needs to retire already. lectures are mainly sexual fantasies and do not relate to the out of class essays assigned which are not talked about until after the due date, if talked about at all. these essays also aren't marked for 3 weeks. grammar quizzes are absolutely impossible and studying does not help.
I think Jean is a nice prof, she is willing to discuss ideas and do workshopping to improve your work. She struggles with URCourses and is not very organized. Do not take her class if you are a procrastinator, as she does not have set due dates. Her syntax tests are extremely difficult. Despite these I think she's a lovely lady.
While Jean is a nice person she is a terrible professor. ENGL 251 has the potential to be a good class but Jean does not teach it well. She does not outline assignments, gives poor feedback, and has unclear expectations. Also, she gives out useless grammar tests designed for ENGL 100. I would never take a class from her again. Avoid at all costs!!
Nice older lady who constantly talks about literature heavily involving sex. Almost every lecture you will be talking about sex in some way or form. Not really my thing but the essays, quizzes, and final were all extremely easy.
Pretty easy english class but hard marker especially on the final
No set due dates for essays so take this if you love procrastinating, hard to get a hold of outside of class and attendance is pretty optional since it isn't taken nor do you learn much more in-person. Textbook is required since you need it for the final and to read stories inside. Stickler for grammar and grammar quizzes (you get 3 chances though)
Love her! taking her class again for coming winter
Professor Hillabold can be hit or miss. Her lectures often veer into unconventional topics, but the workload is manageable. Using resources like Unstuck AI, ChatGPT, and the free textbook can help navigate the course effectively.
She was often taken off track and spoke of uncomfortable personal matters or opinions. She had a strong opinion and shared experiences of those who do not speak English as a first language struggling in the class and advised those not fluent in English to drop the class and come back later on the first day of classes.
She was nice and the class is easy if you actually attend. She gave us multiple dates for the final so there were options to better fit your schedule. Tried her best even though she is not super great with technology. I thought she was nice and respectable, overall a good class, no complaints.
I do not recommend you take one of her classes. She takes forever to respond and does not stay of topic whatsoever. Grammar quizzes are difficult and confusing. I spent the semester teaching myself the material even though I went to class. I will never take another one of her classes.
Jean is a really nice lady and grades papers in fairness. Although there were lots of papers to write in this class, it was fun because we got to write about whatever we wanted. I was surprised to see that she has bad ratings, and maybe she is not so great in ENGL 100, but for me she was a sweetheart. :)
