The professor was very nice and understanding. He was easy to get a hold of and gave you feedback on papers. Papers were easy, just took a little time to do. He does have an accent so it was a little hard to understand him at times. Just consult the book before the quiz. All open book/open notes.
He is a little difficult to understand, he has a thick French accent and English is his fifth language. He is very smart and knows what he is talking about, but his wording can be difficult to decipher. Sometimes he words things in a way that doesn't make sense on his tests and that tends to screw students up. Quizzes and tests are all in class.
You have to do weekly 2-page essays which gets boring after awhile. You also have to read the textbook and you have to listen to his lectures which are not that fascinating. Questions on his quizzes and finals are on material from both the book and the lectures. He's French so some of the wordings on his quizzes are difficult to understand.
You are expected to show up to class for the lectures to receive the homework assignments. Being able to map out the origination, criminal network, and modus operandi for the cases is must for the class. Reading the books that are assigned combined with cases will help you understand the marital for the tests.
Extremely nice guy, not a good teacher. Should get an A easy enough, but he has a think accent and is really hard to understand. I would avoid at all costs.
Prof Kapenda, always took his time to explain in details many principles of law. You need to read and stay positive. It's a university class not a kindergarden grade, so you wont be able to skip classes. Attendance is 20 percent which helps. It's an easy class but take it seriously because knowledge matters for future law enforcement officers.
He is giving good clues of what's gonna be on the tests. The easy part is using the PowerPoints. You don't have to read the book for his tests, just the PowerPoints. Cool class, awesome lectures good sense of humor. He does test reviews to emphasize important issues to remember. Glad to having had him as my professor.
Prof Kapenda is a great teacher! I learned a lot in his class. He is a really smart guy and has a lot of different experiences to draw from. He is genuinely concerned about students and wants to help them succeed . Makes himself available for extra help and is great at taking extra time to answer questions. I wish more teachers were like him.
Professor Kappenda is easy to work with. I've taken 3 of his classes and I signed up for another 2. Tests are not difficult at all. You'll use his powerpoints and that helps so you dont struggle with the book. Easy A. Just dont skip classes because participation is 20%. You can use the book for extra reading but his Powerpoints are enough to pass.
I would not take this professor again. Test are hard (essay style) and there's no review for tests, he assumes you know the material after reading the chapter. He's accent is heavy and was difficult to understand when he lectured.
If you take Professor Kapenda you will learn the material but don't expect to coast.
Professor Kapenda really cares about his students. I really enjoyed this class and I learned a lot about the different theories in criminal justice.
This class is difficult but professor Kapenda made it an enjoyable. I highly recommend taking this class from him.
Professor always take his whole time to lecture us. He does not cheated on his time of teaching. He explained everything in details, step by step. He also answered our questions professionally. He speaks a other languages but he also speak and teach our course in English. He speaks loud, clear and understandable. He had done a great job in teaching
Professor always well prepared for his lectures. He followed the guidelines of his module and syllabus. I enjoyed attending his class. He speaks clearly, and explained the courses very good to understand. I have a lot of homework that are related to our tests, exams. He also gives us test guide lines to study for that given test. I never failed any
This professor had done a very good job. He teaches according to the syllabus. He teach and explained things clearly. He answered questions and take his time to explained them clearly. He gave us tough homework so we can study, practice them for our upcoming exams. The test always comes from what we have study in our course. He done excellent job
This professor has done an outstanding job in teaching. He makes me work hard and to study to earn my grades. It was a challenged for me but I look back and I understand the level of University study is not easy. I have done a lot of homework and must do good and better in this higher standard of education. An Honest man teaching and use time.
I enjoy this course to learn and understand the constitution more than ever before. The professor has done a good job and he explained them cleared. He uses his time wisely and was honest and not let us go home early. He gave us a lot of homework which gave us more chance to learn. It was a challenged to work hard for grades that I have earned..
Absolutely fantastic professor! Very kind and respectful! I would definitely take another one of his classes!
Amazing professor, very respectful and funny! He will do anything to help to make sure you pass his class! Definitely would take another class of his.
He is a real gem! His class is pretty mediocre. As long as you show up and pay attention you will be fine! He gives plenty of extra credit but beware his is strict on deadlines.
Being present in class was 20% of our grade, we wrote a few essays that took an hour each to complete. All tests or quizzes taken in class, they're very easy to understand if you pay attention. I read 2 chapters of the book and then never again. Extra credit is offered. He met with me on his own time to help me with CJ studies/career planning.
Professor Kapenda was great! I had him for Intelligence & Nat'l Security. It is important to attend class because attendance is counted and he presents new material for every class. As long as you attend- tests, lectures, discussions will be a breeze. He is good at giving feedback and getting everyone involved, would highly recommend.
This was a fun class and a lot of the material was interesting to learn about. He mostly showed us video clips to have a class discussion about, every class we would read an article pertaining to a type of international crime, 1-2 page papers, and powerpoints for assignments. Would highly recommend!
As long as you show up to class and take decent notes you will pass with an A. Such an easy going professor who is willing to work with you. The tests take less than 15 min to take with most of the questions being multiple choice. There are a few papers, but they are all reaction papers on videos you watch. Attendance is 20% of your grade.
Professor Kapenda is one of my all-time favorite professors. His class is heavy in discussion, but the topics are all interesting and easy to follow. Attendance is crucial. All tests are written tests, and will require a little critical thinking rather than just memorizing material. There were a few papers, but he is very lenient on grading.
I took CJ 1010 from Professor Kapenda and really loved it! He's a great professor; funny, very flexible and willing to help. I learned a lot and love him as a teacher. This class is a bit boring... interesting though, and an easy A if that's what you're looking for. He does take roll, so attendance is a must.
Professor Kapenda is AMAZING! He is really interesting to listen to and has great power point slides! With the whole virus situation he was really sweet and didn't want us to stress too much! Make sure you go to class and do the readings, most of the readings are short and sweet. Enjoy!
This was a great class. The video lectures sometimes got a little lengthy, but not too much. It helped that I watched them all at 1.25 speed. There were also a few short reaction papers that I really liked. Professor Kapenda is very knowledgeable, and I enjoyed the class! Would definitely take again.
He is such a great professor. He "requires" you get the textbook, which I honestly suggest you find the cheapest one possible, and you MIGHT use it. It's a good study guide though. As long as you attend the lectures and participate you'll be golden. I really loved this class in general.
ONLINE: Great course. Very cool to learn about how the criminal justice system works. If you watch the lectures, you can pass the weekly quizzes. Write lots of small papers. Willing to work with you to help get the best grade out of the course.
Professor Kapenda is very knowledgeable in the topics he teaches and you can tell it's something he's very passionate about! There were quite a few assignments that required a lot of reading, but he is willing to help you work through them. My only complaint is that he isn't super clear when assigning class work, but other than that, great guy!
Take good notes and do the assignments, you'll do well. I read the textbooks but it was mostly repeating from the lectures.
Prof. Kapenda is one of the best professors I've had so far. He is extremely caring and does what he can to help his students. In order to receive a good grade, you need to show up for class, do the group presentation, and homework assignments (which isn't too difficult, and if you need clarification, just ask). Highly recommend!
He is a teacher that cares and likes to teach and the subject. Very professional, kind, and knowledgeable! He loves hearing from students and again very knowledgeable and understanding! His lectures have a lot of material and can be overwhelming but he does a good test review of the things to focus on which really help. Take his class!
Love Kapenda and the person that he is. Very caring man that loves teaching and loves the topic of criminal justice but tests and quizzes are not it. Most of the questions are meant to trick you. The material that is covered in the tests and quizzes are often not what we go over in class making it difficult.
Great course! I believe that this class should be one that all police officers need to take. Jean is very good and makes the class very applicable for CJ majors.
I have had several classes with Jean and I highly respect him as a person and professor. He pushes you to learn without making you stressed. Very caring and truly wants the best for his students.
Great course that helps you develop a balanced and realistic view on why crime occurs. Jean is amazing and very organized/ clear on expectations. Don't hesitate to take this course or any course with Jean.
The teacher was really nice but what we learned about in the lectures were nothing like the quizzes or tests so I often did not do very well on them. There were a couple of papers that are worth a lot of points so I would recommend doing them, it was an okay class.
Professor Kapenda is passionate and knowledgeable. He will do anything to help you succeed, there are no surprises because he wants you to learn and be successful. You will be prepared for quizzes and exams if you participate in all activities and complete all assignments and assigned reading.
Professor Kapenda was fantastic. He is exceptionally knowledgeable regarding the topics he teaches about and has a wealth of experience. He is willing to work with students and genuinely cares about your success.
Professor Kapenda was one of my favorite professors in the CJ program, which is why I took 4-5 classes from him. He has very flexible due dates, teaches a ton of interesting topics, isn't test heavy, and obviously cares a ton about his students' success. Any test he has are extremely easy if you pay attention in the lectures.
Professor Kapenda was a fantastic teacher. The class is really easy and interesting, but it becomes infinitely better if you ask questions and get engaged. One of the most inspirational things I've ever heard was in this class. Would recommend.
Overall a good class and easy to follow along. Weekly lectures that don't exceed 1 hour total, make sure to take notes! Does not require the most modern textbook either! Quizzes are all open note/lecture/book, but some of the questions are misleading and confusing. Discussion posts are very easy and the few papers we did were the same.
Jean is my academic advisor and this was my fourth class with him. He is a very neutral professor and can see both sides of every topic. Only regret was that I didn't take every possible class with him.
I have taken professor Kapenda for two different classes and I really enjoy his lectures. He gives a study guide for the exam which is really helpful to pass the exams. however, sometimes there is a heavy load of work but he is super understanding
Professor Kapenda was a great professor! Their class is very project and paper-based, you've gotta actually deep dive into the assignments to get a good grade. Having this class be about drugs and crime, it was quite interesting because most of the assignments are interesting and honestly more about your opinion, and your evaluation.
Professor is very hard with lectures but is a good professor. It is hard to understand his lectures, that is better you go back on your own and review what you lectured in that class.
Nice guy and good professor. He likes to use his class as a platform to talk about donald trump and why he should be in prison. A lot of what he teaches about he applies to Trump and what he did that is illegal. He is overall a nice guy but his lectures can get long and monotone.
Kapenda was a good teacher if you take away the fact that all he talks about is how much he thinks Trump should be in prison. He brought a lot of religion and politics into class and you weren't necessarily allowed to speak differently. I learned a lot in class but overall if I didn't have to take his class to get my degree, I wouldn't have.
Kapenda is an amazing teacher! He works hard to bring the best material possible to class, and gives in-depth lectures to broaden your understanding. I had a busy work schedule and even though I missed class often he was understanding and still did his best to accommodate me. This is the fourth class I've taken with him and highly recommend!
I had a hard time understanding what he wanted us to know/learn. I think taking him online was not the best idea. Maybe in person class is better.
Watch 3 or 4 lecture videos and take a quiz every week, plus a paper/discussion weekly. His quizzes had questions on there that weren't even applicable to criminal justice, and I didn't even learn anything in this class. His lecture videos are hard to understand and the slides aren't useful at all for the quizzes. Exams are really difficult.
Very strict on exams. Nobody in my class is getting acceptable scores on exams. Average is 63%
Heard many good things so I decided to take this class from him, but I will never take another class from him. Lots of tests, and papers. Attendance is 20% of your grade. The tests dont make sense and the whole class is doing bad. We are tested on the material once we are two weeks into the new unit. Clearly shows his political views.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. He literally does not know how to use canvas and will not work with you. On the first exam most of the class failed it which he didn't care. He also made me give him a detailed reason on why I should be able to take the second exam. This class was an absolute JOKE.
Professor Kapenda does not hide his political views. He only allows students to read and make assessments from articles that he provides, which almost exclusively come from the New York Times and CNN. He clarifies that any outside research is prohibited. If you're okay with closed mindedness and one sided issues, this class will be easy.
Majority of the class failed 2/4 exams, with the highest score being 82 percent. He doesn't go enough in depth into the topics on his lecture slides to get a full understanding of the topics on the exams. Exams are majority short answer questions that are WAY too hard for just learning about these difficult topics. He is picky and often derogatory.
Exams are very hard and the class averages on them are terrible. He is very picky when it comes to grading and if everything doesn't match his opinion then he will doc points on things. He gave me thirty less points on a discussion for adding one sentence explanations to my answers because I didn't "need to go in-depth". Good luck if you take him.
Very political heavy. If you don't mind having a one sided point of view then you might not mind this class. I prefer the neutral discussion and learning environment. I was really impressed with his background and introduction. Unfortunately I should have read the comments here about grading being tough and subjective.
Kapenda is a horrible grader! He only gives you feed back on what you've done wrong! I never got a very high score on my tests because he required so much description in your writing questions (which there is A LOT). Majority of the tests are essay questions and let me just say NO ONE got higher than an 80% on his tests. He is a very hard teacher.
SO MANY discussion boards!!!! Like all the other reviews he doesn't tell you what you've missed. The test is all fill in the blank, tough grader. You don't get to review what you missed in the test. Little bias on things. Glad to have this class over with.
His exams are proctored & very hard; they're closed book/note. The textbook wasn't used. He provided a lot of PDFs & articles. PowerPoint lectures. His feedback is not helpful at all; he makes you feel stupid. He went easy on us towards the end since a lot of people didn't do well on exams. This course gave me anxiety. Luckily, I passed! Good luck!
Exams are hard & proctored (closed note/book). Lots of papers & discussions. Doesn't give helpful feedback & feedback often made me & others feel stupid. He offers articles & there's an additional book that you need to purchase since he will assign you a chapter for the discussion board. Tough grader for sure. Luckily, I passed, phew!😅 Good luck!
one of the worst classes. heavy on discussion boards and gives little to meaningless feedback. exams are rough, doesnt let you see what you get right or wrong. wouldnt take him again
once again terrible. do not recommend! exams are veryyyy difficult
He's great but has all assignments due sunday every week, for all of his classes, and they're all reading/writing. I don't recommend taking more than 1 of his at a time unless you want multiple exams in one week on top of multi weekly discussions and papers. He also has 3+ multi part exams, most questions are large essay questions so be prepared
Man where do I start, this guy was amazing. Very easy going and chill, not to much homework and when there was it was very light. As long as you came to class and listened it was very easy and balanced throughout the semester. Would take him again.
First, I want to say I absolutely adore Kapenda. He is a very nice and respectful person who truly cares about his students. He was very accommodating towards me when I was having family emergencies, and also helped me when I was having issues with proctorio. Yes, he is a tough grader, but he just wants his students to truly know the material.
I am writing this review as I am crying over how hard I worked in this class. For an assignment that took me 5 hours all he said was "good job". You won't get much feedback on assignments. I am a solid 4.0 student this is the only class I have scored low in. I have had him for 1010 classss and he wasn't too bad but this is another level.
Four proctored exams seem somewhat excessive.
TOUGH GRADER. His exams are very long & timed. Can't use notes/textbook for exams (proctored). He doesn't give good feedback, just an "Excellent!" Very intimidating (my experience). Sadly, he is the only professor who teaches this course. He was understanding with extensions. That's the only positive thing about him. Good luck taking his courses!
He is a tough grader. 4-5 proctored exams where most of the questions you have to type 100-300 words. You can't even see which questions you got wrong. You also have a 5 page essay you have to write. Be on top of your assignments if you want to pass, otherwise you will probably get a bad grade.
Professor Kapenda is very knowledgeable and wants his students to succeed. You will have to put work into the class to achieve a good grade. I learned more in this class than any other class I have taken. Proctored tests are long and require several essay type responses. If you study and learn the material the tests are easy.
I enrolled in this class eager to learn, but the professor has been dismissive and unhelpful. He does not follow the syllabus, and when I politely asked about it, he accused me of being unprofessional and implied that I violated the code of conduct. This left me discouraged and disappointed.
If you are taking his online courses he has most of the answers to everything you need in his lecture videos, most of it was open note and his lecture videos give you almost everything you need. I'd take him again for sure.
I would not recommend taking this professor. I should have listened to the reviews, and I now regret it. Test heavy, closed book/no notes, little usage of the textbook itself. Avoid at all costs if able.
Assignments are not bad or hard but the tests are pretty hard and essay question heavy.
He's tough with grading, doesn't give great feedback, & tests are hard & long (closed book & mostly essay response). You can't see your results after, & when I asked about it he was defensive and claimed this was the case for every class. In my experience, he is not sensitive when communicating online with him, he's very stern & particular.
This class has a lot of material that you have to cover with weekly discussions, assignments, and projects that are not evenly distributed. Exams are extremely hard with the class average between 50-60% on exams. Kapenda worked with me when I was having some issues with a group project but is a hard grader.
His exams are really hard and long with mostly essay questions which he grades pretty harshly. He seems like a nice guy but just grades strict and his material is not super relevant to the exams.
This class was mandatory and that was the only reason i took it. The exams are VERY long and most question of the exam are essay question. He is a very tough grader and leaves little to no feedback. If you ever have any problems with exams, especially with proctorio, he will not help, and his communication style make you feel very irrelevant.
Grading is very strict, feedback is limited, and exams are long, closed-book, and mostly essay-based. Test results cannot be reviewed afterward. When I asked about this, the policy was explained as consistent across classes. Communication was formal and very particular. Students should expect high standards.
Honestly he was great. However, he is very tough on grading and sometimes you'll do what you think the assignment is asking for and apparently it's something completely different. I have disability needs where I read my tests out loud and apparently that's cheating.
